Book Description
* With sixty countries now in the GM race, the rising Gene Revolution in agriculture is overtaking the Green Revolution of the 1960s and â70s
* The first assessment of both the GM reality in China, India, Brazil, South Africa, Argentina, the US and the EU and the consequences of GM crops for billions of people as the monetary and technological divide between rich and poor widens
The high-yield selective breeding of the Green Revolution of the 1960s and â70s is now being overtaken by the Gene Revolution--the development and spread of GM crops across the world.
With over ninety million hectares already under cultivation and sixty countries conducting research, GM is reviled by some as a vast Pandoraâs Box and corporate sell-out, while hailed by others as the necessary technological solution to stagnating agricultural output, ballooning populations, climate change and drought. Sandwiched in between are developing and transitional countries where the need to feed vast populations and to compete against the US in international markets are compelling reasons to get on the GM bandwagon.
This is the first book to bridge the gap between the naysayers and cheerleaders, and to provide a penetrating examination of the realities, complexities, benefits and pitfalls of GM adoption in developing countries that are desperately fighting poverty while trying to stay afloat in the hyper-competitive global economy.

Book Description
This book is an up-to-date discussion of the culture of striped bass and other
Morone spp. The subject matter is broken down into functional components of the spawning, husbandry, and economics of the industry, and is written by some of the leading scientists in each of the respective areas of discussion. The chapters on reproduction, nutrition, environmental requirements, transportation, economics and fish processing are not found anywhere else in the striped bass literature. The chapter on water quality takes a very non-traditional approach to considering the impact water quality has on the production success of
Morone and offers some very thought-provoking ideas on water management.
Primarily written as a reference work, this book is intended to complement existing technique manuals.

Book Description
The history of channel catfish farming in the United States serves as a model for the development of pond-based aquaculture industries worldwide. Channel catfish farming is the largest and economically most important aquaculture industry in the United States. In 2003, over 300,000 metric tons (662 million pounds) of channel catfish were processed, representing about half the total United States aquaculture production. Demand for farm-raised catfish is strong, with record processing years in 2002 and 2003. In 22 chapters written by active scientists in the field,
Biology and Culture of Channel Catfish comprehensively synthesizes over 30 years of research on this American icon. Throughout the book, fundamental biological aspects of channel catfish are linked to practical culture techniques.
Topics include:
• Latest information on reproductive physiology, genetics, and breeding
• Comprehensive treatment of catfish nutrition, feeds, and feeding practices
• Water quality management and pond dynamics
• In-depth review of immunology in channel catfish
• Practical information on diseases and health management
• Techniques for commercial culture, including innovative techniques such as raceways, recirculating systems, and partitioned aquaculture systems
• Catfish economics and marketing
• Exploration of environmental concerns, including recommended Best Management Practices
Customer Reviews:
Biology and Culture of Channel Catfish.......2005-02-11
This is an excellent reference for researchers and industry
professionals. It gives a great amount of detailed information
on how channel catfish are grown commercially in the Southeastern U.S.
Book Description
Human dependence on marine and coastal resources is increasing. Today, small-scale fisheries employ fifty of the world's fifty one million fishers, practically all of whom are from developing countries. And together, they produce more than half of the world's annual marine fish catch of ninety eight million tonnes, supplying most of the fish consumed in the developing world. At the same time, increased fishery overexploitation and habitat degradation are threatening the Earth's coastal and marine resources.
Most small-scale fisheries have not been well managed, if they have been managed at all. Existing approaches have failed to constrain fishing capacity or to manage conflict. They have not kept pace with technology or with the driving forces of economics, population growth, demand for food, and poverty. Worldwide, the management and governance of small-scale fisheries is in urgent need of reform.
"Managing Small-scale Fisheries" looks beyond the scope of conventional fishery management to alternative concepts, tools, methods, and conservation strategies. There is, for example, broader emphasis on ecosystem management and participatory decision-making. Interested readers will include fishery managers, both governmental and nongovernmental; instructors and students in
fishery management; development organizations and practitioners working on small-scale fisheries; and fishers and fishing communities that wish to take responsibility for managing their
own resources.

Book Description
As salmonids have been reared for more than a century in many countries, one might expect that principles are well established and provide a solid foundation for salmonid aquaculture. Indeed, some of the methods used today in salmonid rearing are nearly identical to those employed one hundred years ago. Areas of salmonid research today include nutrition, smolt and stress physiology, genetics and biotechnology.
The purpose of this book is to provide a useful synthesis of the biology and culture of salmonid fishes. The important practices in salmonid culture as well as the theory behind them is described. This volume will be of interest to students, researchers, fisheries biologists and managers as well as practising aquaculturists.

Handbook on Ingredients for Aquaculture Feeds
ASIN: 044489585X |
Book Description
The demand for high quality aquacultured products and an increasing concern for resource conservation has led individuals and large corporations to invest time and money in commercial scale recirculating production systems. However, there are relatively few reports of profitable recirculating production systems in operation. There is little doubt that most fish reared in ponds, floating net pens, or raceways can be produced in commercial scale recirculating systems.
The objective of this book is to provide basic information and analytical skills for the reader so that they may make the proper design or investment decisions concerning water reuse and recycle systems. The chapters of this book are sequenced to provide continuity to a basic approach that would be used in designing a water reuse or recycle system. The chapter authors contributing to this book have written extensively in the literature already on the particular subject being addressed in their chapter.
Considerable background information on the basic processes being presented is also given in each chapter to supplement the basic design information being provided. These chapters should provide the reader with essentially all the information required in order to design and manage a water reuse system.
The book is written for engineers and biologists working in the area of intensive fish culture. The text should also prove useful as a design manual for practising aquaculturists and as a resource of current "state-of-the-art" methodologies associated with water reuse systems.

Book Description
This book provides, in one place, basic information and considerations necessary to plan, build and operate seawater systems for culturing purposes. It provides design, construction and operations guidance for seawater (salinities from freshwater to brine) systems with flow rates of 10-1,000 gallons (40-4,000 liters) per minute.
While the book concentrates on general circumstances, situations and concepts, comprehensive referencing of text and annotated bibliographies are provided in critical technical areas to allow readers to pursue specialized areas of interest. This upgraded and expanded Second Edition contains a considerably increased number of numerical examples relative to the first edition to demonstrate practical applications of the concepts and presented data.

Book Description
The first edition of this book on diagnosis and control of diseases in North American marine aquaculture was published in 1977, with the promise that the material would be updated frequently, in view of the rapid expansion of marine aquaculture and the importance of disease control to successful production. Now, ten years later, the promised update has finally been prepared, incorporating new information that has been published in the intervening time.
The concept and format of the book remain the same - to present information on disease diagnosis and control in a concise standard format, emphasising those diseases which affect survival of cultured populations. Because of the amount of new material, many new sections have been added, and some of the previous sections have been rewritten entirely or almost so. This is particularly true of the section on penaeid shrimp, which now contains current descriptions of 28 diseases.
As with the original edition, many disease specialists have contributed individually authored sections in their areas of expertise. The editors have authored some of the major sections and have added introductory material, but the work represents a genuine group effort.
The volume will be essential reading for all those involved in the diagnosis and control of disease in aquacultured species throughout the world, and indeed for aquaculturists in general.
