5 out of 5 stars Fantastically Healthy Recipes..........2007-06-27

Great cookbook...wonderful for those who are looking for ways to cook Mediterranean or for the experts who want to add this book to their collection. I love it !!!! :)

3 out of 5 stars Work up front.......2007-05-12

I haven't tried any of the recipes yet because most of them require the prior preparation of a stock or sauce (recipes are also provided for these)in order to prepare the main recipe. The recipes sound good and flavorful, but I need to make the time to prepare the sauces/stocks and put them in the freezer so I can make these recipes on a moments notice. So if you're looking for a cookbook that you can just pick up and instantly make the recipe, this is not the one for you.

1 out of 5 stars My Least Favorite Cookbook.......2007-02-06

Nothing to talk about. Just a very plain average cookbook with little or no originality. Very disappointing

1 out of 5 stars The Everything Mediterranean Cookbook.......2006-02-17

This book (in general)contains a basically half dozen base recipies, such as stock, to which various ingredients are added.

3 out of 5 stars Not authentic, but good.......2006-01-11

I like mediterranean food but this cookbook seems tailored for Americans. It's not authentic. But don't let me spoil your appetite.

5 out of 5 stars Touring the Whole of the Mediterranean: The Countries, the History, the Foods.......2005-12-21

'Mediterranean the Beautiful Cookbook: Authentic Recipes from the Mediterranean Lands' is one of those special books written by Joyce Goldstein that is so extensive in its survey of the various countries and the qualities that make them unique that it serves as a fine travelogue as well as offering some of the most tempting samplings of cuisines from this region ever assembled: and remember this 'region includes Italian, Provencal France and coastal Spain, Turkey, the Middle East and northern Africa, Greece and the Balkans!

As each country is visited there are extensive notes about the countries, their relationship and influences, and the flora and fauna that inform the cuisines from food scholar Ayla Aygar. The photography is as superb, both of the landscapes and cities and the people AND of course the foods.

The recipes offered here are unique in that they are geared toward healthy eating - something not all cookbooks from other countries include! Here are recipes easily carried out in the standard American kitchen with information on how to find ingredients locally. The writing is casually refined and the recipes are easy to follow.

For a book that will encourage the reader to extend that trip to one country to enjoy the kaleidoscopic magnificence of the entire Mediterranean this richly illustrated volume is on the top of the list. Buy it before it slips out of print! Highly recommended. Grady Harp, December 05

5 out of 5 stars Healthy, Tasty Food from the Mediterranean region........2005-10-22

My neighbors Tom and Julia who know my passion for the Mediterranean region gave me this book yesterday as a surprise gift. I have traveled the world, tasted many different cuisines and I came to a conclusion that when it comes to La Dolce Vita, Joie de Vivre and Good Food, nothing compares to tasty, healthy Mediterranean diet and life style. I am telling you folks, it's the best in the world. This book is a good representation of the cuisines from the region and has many delicious recipes from Turkey to Italy, from Israel to Tunisia. Especially those mouthwatering Turkish recipes in this book are easy to make. The book also has wonderful colored photos of the region accompanied by articles on each country in the area.

The Turkish cuisine which has long been rated by European experts as one of the best in the world together with French and Chinese, is not all that known in this country. This is partly due to the small size of the Turkish American society and partly the lack of publicity on Turkish resort towns in North America. However with this book, you do not have to wait until you visit Istanbul to try those dishes. This is one book you'll use over and over again, even if you immigrate to Europe, because the recipes in this book contain measurements both in English and metric.

This is the third cookbook we have in our collection by Joyce Goldstein and I can tell you that, this experienced cookbook author together with co-author Ayla Algar have outdone themselves in this book.

I have never received this book because you cancelled my order. Although, I really would like the book, it is impossible for me to order again. Your computer tells me that I have odered it already and will not exept any additional orders for this item. I gave the 1 star rating because otherwise the computer will not send this message.
If you have this book again, please send me one; I am still interested.

5 out of 5 stars Attractive.......2001-10-20

This large format softcover book has beautiful pictures of various locations in the Mediterranean, as well as great pictures of almost every dish for which there is a recipe. The recipes are easy to follow, measurements in English and metric, with a helpful notation about the recipe at the start of each one. More importantly, they are useful dishes that you can acutally cook, not one of those books with 20 different ways to cook octopus. Where a particular local indgrediant is probably not available stateside, a creditable alternative is given. The book looks tasty to the eye, and the recipes are tasty as well. I am particularly fond of Turkish food and this cuisine is well represented, just as the other Mediterranean countires are.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, interesting, healthy food !!!.......1999-04-10

I loved this book, but it was one of many that was damaged in the floods of 1998. Many of the dishes were very easy to make too. I've been waiting for a reprint since !

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic reference guide!.......2007-10-09

Fantastic reference book for action poses. Has great pictures at varied angles and perspectives. Very comprehensive. Comes with a disc that has even more images and features. Nice little addition of industry talent giving their approach to figure drawing/cartooning. A good book for artist's of all
skill levels.

5 out of 5 stars A great reference companion for comic book artists.......2007-10-05

As a beginning professional comic book artist, I've had a lot of trouble nailing certain poses that have to deal with obscure angles and foreshortening. This book has made things a lot easier, as there are a ton of very helpful photos and tutorials in it. The bonus CD is also a great addition.

A good comic book artist should always be prepared to know how to draw anything at any given time. One should also always draw what's right for the story and not take too many shortcuts. While this is hard to do, it it will help you grow as an artist and stand out in the competitive world of comics. And for the difficult aspects of human anatomy and poses, this book should serve as a great reference guide to artists of any level.

4 out of 5 stars Very good for basic references.......2007-09-19

Really good if you are looking for fight scenes and positions to draw. Overall, its a good resource. The lighting is very good, and sometimes leans a little toward the dramatic side. If you use this along with, for example, a reference book on facial expressions, there are a lot of different images that you can create from these reference points. The disc is wonderful, especially since I do most of my work digitally and therefore like to work with my reference images in the computer.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource for any artist.......2007-09-16

The first time I saw this on the shelve in my local bookstore I just skimmed over the pages and thought nothing much of it. I recently decided to put together a game prototype that will feature many characters in dynamic poses in many situations. Problem was I had no real reference other than the internet, and after becoming increasingly frustrated with lack of good quality reference I remembered this book. Frantically trying to recall the name from months back, I was more than happy to purchase a copy, and I'm grateful I did. It's an immense resource that every artist should have as part as their library. Having models in many different situations and poses is a huge help when it comes to consistency amongst many other things.

I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great for preteen and teens artists, not just professionals!.......2007-08-17

I teach junior high students. This book would be perfect for all the kids in my school who love to draw. The poses show models doing things you would see in comics (flying, running, fighting, swords, capes, etc.). The models wear formfitting clothes but they are all clothed enough to be "decent." There is a page of photos showing a woman smoking, but since this is something a comic artist might need to draw, I don't see it as a problem. (Hopefully someday all kids will NEED a photo to know what smoking looks like!) There are several excellent step-by-step art lessons that teach real art concepts and could be used in the classroom. There's also a CD packaged with the book that has many more pictures on it. Students would enjoy browsing the CD or using Photoshop to combine multiple photos into something new that they could then draw from. Five stars and a recommendation to my school's librarian!

5 out of 5 stars Cashing In on a Second Home in Mexico: How to Buy, Rent and Profit from Property South of the Border.......2007-08-28

Book in great condition. Easy reading, and many good pointers on moving to Mexico. Great information on email address for help on subject of renting or owning property. Think it will be very usefull.

5 out of 5 stars Useful information.......2007-07-19

I found this book very informative. It covered all aspects of buying property in Mexcio and information on specific areas of the country. Even though he promotes Stewart Title Insurance I see how this is an important area to consider when purchasing in Mexico. I learned a lot and will keep this book for future reference.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-07-05

I "bought" a home in Puerto Pensaco two years ago. I am still trying to get my Fideicomiso. While everything looks like it will turn out ok, I sure wish i had read this book first. If nothing else I would have understood the process better and would have know what questions to ask and what documents to look for.

A very informative book and I highly recommend it to anyone thinking about buying in Mexico. It will increase you comfort level trmendously.

3 out of 5 stars Giving it a 3 because it did contain some useful information.......2007-06-15

It deserves 3 stars because it did contain some useful information which was unknown to me, however it wasn't that great of a read. There are not a whole lot of books on buying a home in Mexico so this one will have to do for now.

2 out of 5 stars Very Poorly Written.......2007-05-07

I found this book very poorly written, incredibly boring, and repetitive to the point that the eyes glaze over after a while. I think one of the writers must be a lawyer whose intention is to make things obscure rather than clear. It needs a thorough editing, but I think the person would be "mad as a hatter" before s/he finished the task. As another reviewer observed, the book should be greatly reduced in size, and Stewart Title Company should pay for advertisement -- if it had not already done so. Appendix B "Getting Into Mexico" is totally out of date.

Every organization needs good leadership in order to win against the competition. Through his own personal story and those of nine other Rangers, Barber illuminates fundamental lessons about what it really takes to win. These first-person accounts of trial and triumph highlight the importance and the inherent truth of the Army’s most fundamental leadership principles: seeking and taking responsibility for your actions, and knowing yourself and seeking self-improvement. Leadership skills that create exceptional personal and professional success-from the military's toughest school

From the Dieppe Raid and the D-Day invasion to Iraq and Afghanistan, the U.S. Army Rangers have earned their reputation for bravery, leadership, and sacrifice in combat. In any military conflict, Rangers are among the first troops on the ground. They willingly accept the most dangerous missions in war, and their volunteer members risk all they have to get the job done. They are tough, they are fearless, and they are leaders.

Ranger School teaches its graduates how to excel under extreme conditions, how to persevere despite seemingly impossible odds, and how to develop the mental strength to succeed at any cost. In No Excuse Leadership, former Ranger Brace Barber shares the leadership lessons all Ranger School alumni learn. Those lessons not only helped him excel as an officer, but also gave him the skills to succeed as a businessman in the private sector. Currently the cofounder and president of two companies, Barber explains what it's like to make it through the toughest and best leadership school in the U.S. military and-through the personal stories of nine other Rangers-illuminates fundamental Ranger School lessons about what makes great leadership and great leaders. For business leaders who want to challenge themselves and their organizations, for good leaders who want to be great leaders, for leaders who want to prove to themselves and to their organizations that no challenge is impossible, No Excuse Leadership offers an inside look at the ultimate leadership training ground-Ranger School.

Brace E. Barber (Colorado Springs, CO) is a graduate of West Point and the U.S. Army's Airborne and Ranger Schools. He has served in the military around the world, including near the Korean demilitarized zone. Using the organization and leadership skills he learned in the military, he cofounded, and currently serves

5 out of 5 stars Good things to know before you enter the Army........2007-05-30

I bought this book for my son who is going in to the Army in a few months. He read the book and found a lot of useful information in it. He's glad that he read it and has gone back through it a 2nd time.

5 out of 5 stars Great .......2007-02-11

I am a graduate of Ranger School Class 2-99 and I thought this was an excellent book on how individuals that read this book can apply their leadership skills to civilian and military occupations. For the longest time, it has been difficult for me to explain to friends, family, and fellow Army officers what Ranger School was about, other than it being totally miserable for 62 days.

The individuals that shared their stories in this book are authentic because I remember the days they described. Brace Barber made this book interesting because he used other Soldier's points of view on Ranger School and how they perceived the lessons they learned about leadership. The Army claims Ranger School is the ultimate leadership school and I have to agree 100% with them. I plan to make it a requirement for my platoon leaders to read this book when I take command. RLTW!

5 out of 5 stars Non- stop motovation!.......2006-08-15

I have never read a book that has inspired me more.
I was in the Army for 8yrs and was a paratrooper, this book has inspired me too the point that i have re-entered the Army at 33
in hopes of becoming a special forces soldier. I enjoyed reading about the passion, drive, and comradery that the elite rangers and ranger battalion's share.

5 out of 5 stars Leadership is not Management.......2006-06-24

Apart from Jack Schropp's book: Unbeatable: Lessons from a Navy Seal ... this is pretty good. The best leaders often emerge when it is literally do or die. What more obvious scenario than being in a combat zone. There is some wisdom that in life there are no excuses, only results, and a healthy warrior spirit is a strong quality in a leader. Perhaps that is why Alexander the Great conquered the entire known world by 26.

5 out of 5 stars *** Buyer Beware ****.......2007-03-30

If you're expecting the same caliber of book as 'Peter and the StarCatchers' or 'Peter and the Shadow Thieves' both by Dave Barry, this book is only a 2-3 hour read and not the continuation of those two books. From the cover you get the impression that it's another FULL NOVEL, but it's not. It's just a short read. The story is nice, but nothing like the EXCELLENT two books listed above.

4 out of 5 stars "Peter and the Starcatchers" for the younger set.......2007-02-16

As a librarian I am always happy to see shorter and/or easier fantasy chapter books. So many children want to read fantasy but struggle with the enormous tomes, which can be daunting. So, this latest entry by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson - at only 134 pages - was a welcome edition before I had even read page 1. And the story did not disappoint, especially not when listening to an audiobook with the acclaimed Jim Dale performing. The story involves an extended family of mollusks, headed by Giant Prawn; the youngest member of the family, Little Scallop wants to participate more in family adventures, but is restricted to the tidal pools of home. Of course, Little Scallop disobeys and swims off with two mermaids, Surf and Aqua, right into tremendous trouble with pirates and all sorts of other bad guys. Peter and the Lost Boys make an appearance to save the day and all's well. This title will appeal to boys and girls alike; in fact it's a particularly good choice for girly-girls who will enjoy the mermaid aspect. The audio book is excellent - not unexpected with Jim Dale performing; and the print book would also make a good read-aloud for 1st - 3rd graders

As usual, Jean Sasson opened my eyes to a harsh culture where survival is your minute by minute goal. She has provided women with a voice and others of us a reason to be thankful to be Americans.

4 out of 5 stars Engaging.......2007-05-12

I love all of Jean Sasson's books. Like all the others, this is written to keep you interested in the story and wondering what could possibly happen next to this poor young woman, her husband and all Kurds, even though you eventually know about the general outcome. The fact that the story is true, makes it hair raising. The only unfavorable thing I could say about the book, is that in telling the story, Jean Sasson looses herself a bit by going into too many details of places, people, every day occurrances, and the constant back and forth conversations between the protagonists. Sometimes it is best to leave details to your imagination. Other than that, I enjoyed it thoroughly and can't wait for the next!

Stephen E. Ambrose combines history and journalism to describe how American GIs battled their way to the Rhineland. He focuses on the combat experiences of ordinary soldiers, as opposed to the generals who led them, and offers a series of compelling vignettes that read like an enterprising reporter's dispatches from the front lines. The book presents just enough contextual material to help readers understand the big picture, and includes memorable accounts of the Battle of the Bulge and other events as seen through the weary eyes of the men who fought in the foxholes. Highly recommended for fans of Ambrose, as well as all readers interested in understanding the life of a 1940s army grunt. A sort of sequel to Ambrose's bestselling 1994 book D-Day, Citizen Soldiers is more than capable of standing on its own.

Book Description

In this riveting account, historian Stephen Ambrose continues where he left off in his #1 bestseller D-Day. Ambrose again follows the individual characters of this noble, brutal, and tragic war, from the high command down to the ordinary soldier, drawing on hundreds of interviews to re-create the war experience with startling clarity and immediacy. From the hedgerows of Normandy to the overrunning of Germany, Ambrose tells the real story of World War II from the perspective of the men and women who fought it.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Oral History of the GI in Europe.......2007-10-16

Ambrose's book takes up where his prequel left off - the battle of Normandy. He continues their saga as they battle their way into the heartland of Germany. Especially riveting are the conditions under which the GIs fought during the battle of the Bulge. Also, what makes this a riveting read is that he uses oral histories of the GIs, both American and German. Secondly, Ambrose does not belittle the German effort as he did in his June 6, 1944 book. In Citizen Soldiers, he gives the Germans their rightly due as fighting soldiers and indicates they had it just as rough in the field as the Americans.

It was also interesting to read how the Germans believed they should have been fighting with the Americans instead of against them - and that they should have focused together on the Russians. Ambrose made clear, which I had never really thought about, was that the Germans should have been placing all their men on the Eastern front and should have reduced their efforts in the West.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed this book as much as his other books. I believe you can read this one and his June 6 book in any order. A must for any library.

5 out of 5 stars My Dad's War.......2007-08-21

This was my dad's war. He was drafted. I was too young for Vietnam. The stopped drafting the year before I was eligible.

My dad doesn't talk about it much. I have a 7 year old, my dad was 80 when he was born. When a war movie comes on, I tell my son, "your granddad was a brave soldier". Once when we were at his house, my son said to my dad, "granddad, you were a brave soldier". My dad turned to me and said, "I was scared to death the whole time I was over there". I replied, "yeah, dad, but you did it. You were in those battles and fought as scared as you may have been".

This is their story. They weren't the enlisted men like today. These kids were drafted. I can't imagine to be so young and to see so much death.

This is a very good book that tells the story of the scared, but brave men who put their lives on the line because they had to. They did it and they won.

God bless all our soldiers!

5 out of 5 stars I had no idea..........2007-06-13

...that the winter of 1944-1945 was so horrific for the average G.I. on the front. A truly excellent read. The fact that Ambrose really admired and respected the "Greatest Generation" is clear from this book - and highlights why we must respect and admire them as well.

I especially appreciated his defense of the 1950's "Man in the Gray Flannel Suit" towards the end of the book. The so-called conformity of the 1950's wasn't a weakness or fault. It was a societal strength. I have always suspected this, but didn't know why. Ambrose explains it.

God Bless the World War II vets - among whom was my own father.

5 out of 5 stars An entertaining and highly informative read.......2007-05-13

This illuminating book covers the WWII European Theatre from the top down, from FDR, Churchill, Stalin & Hitler to Ike, Monty, Patton & the German High Command to the grunts in the foxholes on both sides of the line. Very interesting & well written with both facts and anecdodtal stories.

5 out of 5 stars Ambrose: Right on The Money Again.......2007-04-07

Once again, Ambrose captures our attention on the subject of World War II. For this particular book, Ambrose doesn't focus on one unit, like Band Of Brothers, instead he focuses on all members of the United States Armed Forces that participated in the European Theater of Operations. Aptly titled, Citizen Soldiers. This book gives a very full insight to the behavior and feelings of the various people in various units as the the Allied forces pushed their way from Normandy to Germany. Vivid details of random battles, and a lot of information about the regular every day soldier who carries out orders, not the generals that give them. Nice change of pace. I recommend this book to anybody seeking more information on World War II, or any military history buff. Because of language, I would only recommend this to a mature 13-16 year old.

I am reading Mary Pope Osborne's Odyssey series with my 10 year old son. He is enjoying the stories and I think it's a great introduction to Greek mythology.

5 out of 5 stars all of this series.......2007-03-25

These books are excellent. My second grade class is obsessed with them. Some of them are even writing a play based on The Land of the Dead. They hang on every word, and discuss Odysseus' flaws on the play ground. It's so cool.

5 out of 5 stars tbreading@warsaw.k12.in.us.......2005-10-21

I use this book for an ESL English class. It's much more comprehensible than reading the poetic version. The kids seem to enjoy it, where I think they would be lost with the poetic translation in our textbook. All of the students in this class are low level English speakers, so this gives them something interesting to read without a huge comprehension challenge. They find it interesting to read about going to the land of the dead and then coming back. Most are Catholic, so it is alittle difficult for them to understand Hades and Persephone. There is no good comparison to what they already know.

Book Description

Ilan Pappe's book is the story of Palestine, a land inhabited by two peoples, and two national identities. It begins with the Ottomans in the early 1800s, the reign of Muhammad Ali, and traces a path through the arrival of the early Zionists at the end of that century, through the British mandate at the beginning of the twentieth century, the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948, and the subsequent wars and conflicts which culminated in the intifadas of 1987 and 2000. While these events provide the background to the narrative and explain the construction of Zionist and Palestinian nationalism, at center stage are those who lived through these times, men and women, children, peasants, workers, town-dwellers, Jews and Arabs. It is a story of coexistence and cooperation, as well as oppression, occupation, and exile. Ilan Pappe is well known as a revisionist historian of Palestine and a political commentator on the Israel-Palestine conflict. His book is a unique contribution to the history of this troubled land which all those concerned with developments is the Middle East will be compelled to read. Ilan Pappe teaches politics at Haifa University in Israel. He has written extensively on the politics of the Middle East, and is well known for his revisionist interpretation of Israel's past and as a critic of Israel's policies towards the Palestinians. His books include The Making of the Arab-Israeli Conflict, 1947-1951 (Taurlls, 1992) and The Israeli-Palestine Question (Routledge, 1999).

1 out of 5 stars Cambridge University Press' Shameful Pandering to Terrorists.......2006-02-19

Pappé is the odd man out among the so-called New Historians. Unlike his colleagues, who pretend to base their anti-Israel writings on recently declassified documents from the British Mandate period and the first years of Israeli independence, Pappé is an unabashed "relativist" for whom historical research is a backward-looking projection of political attitudes and agendas regardless of actual facts. Aside from his doctoral dissertation, subsequently published as Britain and the Arab-Israeli Conflict, 1948-51,[1] Pappé's books are not based on archival documentation, preferring secondary (and deeply prejudiced) sources that aim at vindicating the Palestinian "narrative" of the conflict. He himself explains this in the introduction to A History of Modern Palestine:

My bias is apparent despite the desire of my peers that I stick to facts and the "truth" when reconstructing past realities. I view any such construction as vain and presumptuous. This book is written by one who admits compassion for the colonized not the colonizer; who sympathizes with the occupied not the occupiers.

This unabashed acknowledgment of personal bias and open political partisanship comes from a diehard ideologue who views Zionist and Israeli history as "more than a century of colonization, occupation, and dispossession of Palestinians." The equation of Zionism with colonialism, the cornerstone of Pappé's historical narrative, has been a staple of Arab propaganda since the early 1920s. Almost as predictable is the portrayal of Arabs and Palestinians as the hapless victims of this alleged foreign invasion.

Publication of A History of Modern Palestine by a prestigious academic press is a sad testament to the pervasive politicization of Middle Eastern studies where the dividing line between academic scholarship and unadulterated propaganda has been blurred, if not erased.

Even by the skewed standards of this field of studies, Pappé's latest book ranks in a class of its own. Not only does it add no new facts or ideas to the anti-Israel literature, but the sloppiness of its research astounds. It contains countless factual errors and inaccuracies. Yasir Arafat's birthplace is Cairo and not Jerusalem. The U.N. Special Commission on Palestine (UNSCOP) presented its report on August 31, 1947, not on November 29. Deir Yasin is a village near Jerusalem, and not in Haifa. Lawrence of Arabia had nothing to do with the Anglo-Hashemite correspondence that led to the "Great Arab Revolt" of World War I. Further, this correspondence was initiated by the Hashemites not by the British. Pappé even misspells the official English transliteration of President Weizmann's first name (Chaim, not Haim).

More serious is the book's consistent resort to factual misrepresentation, distortion, and outright falsehood. Readers are told of events that never happened, such as the nonexistent May 1948 Tantura "massacre" or the expulsion of Arabs within twelve days of the partition resolution. They learn of political decisions that were never made, such as the Anglo-French 1912 plan for the occupation of Palestine or the contriving of "a master plan to rid the future Jewish state of as many Palestinians as possible." And they are misinformed about military and political developments, such as the rationale for the Balfour declaration:

Without Russia, there was very little hope of successfully surrounding Germany with a ring of enemy states, a strategy it was hoped would cause Germany to surrender. The British government expected that Russian Jews would become the agents of pro-British propaganda that would persuade the tsarist government to come out clearly in support of the Allies' effort to subjugate Germany.

But Russia was a member of the Triple Entente coalition with Britain and France from the time of the outbreak of hostilities in 1914 and so needed no encouragement to join the war three years later, least of all by its despised and persecuted Jewish minority. In fact, it was hoped that the Zionist movement, by virtue of its perceived connections to the Bolshevik movement, would help keep communist Russia in the war.

Pappé claims that Theodor Herzl "attempted to enlist British help in installing a temporary Jewish state (i.e., one that would eventually be moved to Palestine) in British Uganda, an offer which was seriously considered by some in Whitehall," only to have his plan foiled by Weizmann. In fact, it was British Colonial Secretary Joseph Chamberlain, not Herzl, who conceived of the East Africa idea. Nor was the "Uganda plan" foiled by Herzl's opponents, least of all Weizmann. Herzl narrowly got the plan passed by his last Zionist Congress in 1903, overriding the opposition of such Zionist leaders as Menahem Ussishkin and Yehiel Chlenov; it was only after Herzl's death in July 1904 that the idea was unceremoniously buried.

A final example of Pappé's distortion concerns the tidal wave of Arab violence that immediately followed the U.N. partition vote in November 1947. On the day after the vote, a spate of Arab attacks left seven Jews dead and scores more wounded. Shooting, stoning, and rioting continued apace in the following days. The consulates of Poland and Sweden, both of whose governments had voted for partition, were attacked. Bombs were thrown into cafes, Molotov cocktails were hurled at shops, a synagogue was set on fire. On December 3, at the instigation of the Palestinian leadership, a large mob ransacked the new Jewish commercial center in Jerusalem, looting and burning shops and stabbing and stoning whomever they happened upon. The next day, some 120-150 armed Arabs attacked Kibbutz Efal, on the outskirts of Tel Aviv, in the first large-scale attempt to storm a Jewish village.

Ignoring this heavily documented historical record, Pappé whitewashes this violence as intra-communal clashes "activated by hotheaded youth on both sides." He even makes the mind-boggling claim that this violence had been triggered by the Haganah. Like so much else in A History of Modern Palestine, this is a falsehood.

Does Pappé count on the ignorance of the general reader to accept it? Does he expect his peers to give him a pass? That Cambridge University Press purveys this disgraceful work suggests that they just might. It also symbolizes the crisis in Middle East studies.

1 out of 5 stars Ilan Pappe rewrites History to fit his own agenda.......2005-10-13

Ilan Pappe, has taken the history of israel and changed it to fit his revisionist dialogue and prpomte an anti Israel agenda. He uses information that cannot be documented, has decided on a one state solution and essentially calls for the elimination of the state of Israel, while he lives on a goverment salary, and is protected by the very soliders that he demonizes. He should be filed un "fiction" in the libraries.

1 out of 5 stars Revisionist history at its worst.......2005-04-27

This is a work that pretends at objectivity, but is written with a clear agenda in mind. Pappe totally identifies with the Palestian Arab cause, and places the major onus for the conflict on the Jews of Israel. Thus he slants the major historical and political realities, in which the Jews have five times agreed to a peace plan based on partition while the Arabs have insistently refused to accept the Jews right to a state of their own. Pappe underplays the persistent and systematic Arab violence and terror which have been at the heart of the conflict from its beginning. He mistells the story of the 1947-1948 war minimizing the Arab agression, the calls of the leaders of Arab states for Palestinians to temporarily abandon their homes , so that invading Arab armies would be able to kill Jews more freely. He underplays the countless initiatives made by Israelis from all walks of life to live in peaceful relations with the Arabs. And does not really put the conflict into the context of the pan- Arabic, Islamic fundamentalist, and Arab nationalist processes which perpetuate the conflict even today.
This is Revisionist History at its worst, a distorting and ignoring of the factual and objective reality in order to promote a ' cause' . That cause is disguised and misrepresented in the work.
For Pappe as anyone who reads carefully will see is calling for a Jewish state which ceases to be Jewish in any meaningful way, and eventually becomes an Arab dominated one , in which its Arab minority will eventually become its majority. Pappe's analysis is one which aims to help bring about the destruction of Israel.
Is it surprising then that most Israelis consider him to be both a hypocrite and a traitor?

1 out of 5 stars Historical fiction.......2004-08-23

This simply isn't history. In real life, people do things for reasons. Historians explain what happened and (to some extent) why. That is how they are able to infer as yet unknown details and even predict future attitudes and acts. Pappe gets plenty of facts wrong, but his biggest failing is to ascribe incorrect or even impossible motives to many of the people of the region.

This book is propaganda masquerading as history.
