Book Description

Nothing is more evocative of the Texas outdoors than the whistled call of the bobwhite. While the familiar two-note greeting is now just a memory for most of us who live in the state's growing urban sprawl, this bird is an economic commodity on par with crops and livestock in some regions of Texas.

Three other native species of quail also inhabit Texas. Like the northern bobwhite, the scaled quail is significant as a game bird. The other two species, Gambel's quail and Montezuma quail, are found in limited areas of southwestern Texas and represent an important indicator of forest, rangeland, and habitat conditions.

Texas Quails presents the first complete assessment of the four species of quail found in this vast state. Experts describe each of them and examine all geographic regions of the state for historical and current population trends, habitat status, and research needs. These experts also discuss management practices, hunting issues, economics, and diseases.

With the recent creation of the Texas Quail Conservation Initiative, this volume provides a timely and comprehensive view of quail science and stewardship.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Texas quails: Ecology and Management .......2007-09-13

This is an excellent book on all Texas quails (bobwhites, scaled quail, Gambel's quail and the little-known Montezuma/Mearn's/harlequin quail). The ecoregional approach is detailed and informative. Species accounts are also detailed, referring not just to the Texas aspects but also other regional studies where relevant. The endemic Mearn's quail is especially interesting since this species is little studied. I rate this book as necessary to any quail enthusiast.

5 out of 5 stars WOW! .......2007-04-13

This encyclopedic, thoroughly referenced, well-organized, well-written compendium is the best single resource for quail hunters, wildlife and range managers, with appeal and utility for those beyond Texas who care about these fascinating species. Incredibly low-cost to boot. Highly recommended.

        Book Description

Evidence of rising temperatures, melting ice, rising sea levels, and damage to flora and fauna on land and in the oceans has been accumulating for several decades. Scientific bodies around the world have traced this trend to increasing levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, most of it attributable to the consumption of fossil fuels. Despite the evidence, political debate still rages over the existence of global warming. Global Warming in the 21st Century provides a detailed review of the accumulating evidence of global warming, from the Arctic and Antarctic to the tropics, focusing special attention on a number of processes that will accelerate warming as the century passes. Extensive warming also could endanger sea life through the devastation of phytoplankton populations at the base of the oceanic food chain. Bruce Johansen presents scientific theories on the subject that conflict with popular assumptions and explains that global warming is a slow-motion crisis in which the effects of greenhouse gas emissions are not evident in the atmosphere until roughly a half-century after they occur. Extensive reports from scientific literature explain how ozone depletion in the stratosphere and warming near the surface of the Earth are related. This three-volume work also proposes detailed solutions to global warming, including a worldwide overhaul in energy systems that will go beyond the initial diplomatic efforts of the Kyoto Protocol. The set ends with one of the most extensive bibliographies in the field and includes more than 80 color and black and white illustrations.

          Book Description

There may still be disagreement about the threat to human survival posed by society's environmental impacts, but no one can doubt that individual eco-systems and the global biosphere are both increasingly shaped by human production and consumption. This book shows that Marx's treatment of natural conditions possesses an inner logic, coherence, and analytical power which has not been previously recognized. The power of Marx's approach stems from his consistent treatment of human production in terms of the mutual constitution of its social form and material content. While recognizing that production is structured by historically developed relations among producers, Marx also insists that production as a social and material process is shaped and constrained by natural conditions, including the natural condition of human bodily existence. Paul Burkett shows that it is Marx's overriding concern with human emancipation that impels him to approach nature from the standpoint of materialist history, sociology, and critical political economy.

              Book Description

Miami University in Oxford, Ohio offers a course entitled "Sustainability Perspectives," based on this text. The course was awarded "The Instructional Innovation Award" at the 1996 annual meeting of the Decision Sciences Institute, an association of Decision Science professionals headquartered at Georgia State University in Atlanta. The 1990's have seen the development of important new approaches to sustaining corporate development and protecting the environment. Corporations are beginning to realize their responsibilities for a healthy environment. Sustainable development is viewed as an integrated, ecological, economic, and social system in which both economic growth and quality-of-life improvements can occur in a unified system complementary to the maintenance of natural capital. Sustainability Perspectives for Resources and Businesses shows the reader that a sound understanding of the concepts involved in sustainable development is beneficial to businesses, natural resources, and the population in general. This textbook was written to help students and professionals involved in business, science, or engineering to understand the changes occurring in the workplace. It serves as a step toward understanding how business and science, as professional communities, are adapting to new information about risks to the environment. Various chapters are devoted to resources, values, and valuation systems. Each section develops principles such as resilience and integrity in the economy and the environment.

                Book Description

This volume highlights the need for enhancing the effectiveness of land stewardship and management of the world's natural resources to meet the need of the growing global population for conservation, sustainable development, and the use of land, water, and other natural resources. Ecosystem-based, multiple-use land stewardship is necessary when considering the present and future uses of land, water, and other natural resources on an operationally efficient scale. The chapters focus on global watershed management perspectives, problems, and programs; a retrospective survey of watershed management, lessons learned, emerging tools and technologies, and locally-led initiatives; the issues confronted when implementing a watershed management approach to land stewardship; the anticipated future contributions of watershed management to land stewardship; and the protocols necessary to realize the contributions of watershed management to land stewardship in practices, projects, and programs.

                  Book Description

In this book Robert Brulle draws on a broad range of empirical and theoretical research to investigate the effectiveness of U.S. environmental groups. Brulle shows how Critical Theory--in particular the work of Jürgen Habermas--can expand our understanding of the social causes of environmental degradation and the political actions necessary to deal with it. He then develops both a pragmatic and a moral argument for broad-based democratization of society as a prerequisite to the achievement of ecological sustainability.

From the perspectives of frame analysis, resource mobilization, and historical sociology, using data on more than one hundred environmental groups, Brulle examines the core beliefs, structures, funding, and political practices of a wide variety of environmental organizations. He identifies the social processes that foster the development of a democratic environmental movement and those that hinder it. He concludes with suggestions for how environmental groups can make their organizational practices more democratic and politically effective.

                  Book Description

"We hope that range managers reading this book will realize that they are also wildlife managers, and that wildlife managers reading this book will realize that they are also habitat managers; in the region this book covers, rangeland and habitat are synonyms."-from the Preface

For most of the last century, range management meant managing land for livestock. The best measure of success was how well a landowner grew the grass that cattle ate. In this century, landowners look to hunting and wildlife viewing for income; rangeland is now also wildlife habitat, and landowners are managing their land not just for cattle but also for wildlife, most notably deer and quail.

Unlike other books on white-tailed deer in places where rainfall is relatively high and the environment stable, this book takes an ecological approach to deer management in the semiarid lands of Oklahoma, Texas, and northern Mexico. These are the least productive of white-tail habitats, where periodic drought punctuates long-term weather patterns. The book's focus on this landscape across political borders is one of its original and lasting contributions. Another is its contention that good management is based on ecological principles that guide the manager's thinking about:

                  Habitat Requirements of White-Tailed Deer

                  White-Tailed Deer Nutrition

                  Carrying Capacity

                  Habitat Manipulation

                  Predators

                  Hunting

The co-authors of this book are very dedicated to the preservation of wildlife. I am proud to consider them both friends of mine. Thank you for the good work.
