The original printing of Testing Computer Software set the standard for the emerging field of test engineering with a full tour of the state of the art in managing the testing process. The reissued text makes this classic out-of-print text available once again. Though it relies heavily on older examples (including MS-DOS) and has not been updated, this text is still a worthwhile resource for practical-minded advice on the realities of testing.
The best thing about Testing Computer Software is its practical point-by-point guide to everyday software testing, from creating a test plan, to writing effective bug reports, to working with programming staff and management to fix bugs.
That said, this book's early frame of reference shows how far we've come. (The book relies heavily on MS-DOS examples and features some truly embarrassing anachronisms, including the mention of testing dot-matrix printers and even EGA/VGA video modes.) The bibliography stops at sources from 1992 and features many references from the 1980s. Nowadays, automated software testing tools are the staple of any testing strategy. This book even advocates a wait-and-see approach to the "new" Microsoft Test.
These limitations aside, there is still a good deal to mine here. Much of the approach to testing is still very valid for any aspiring or working test engineer. Clearly, readers of the first edition will have little reason to upgrade to this second edition, but for anyone who appreciates a "classic" (and indeed a pioneering) text in the field of software testing, it's good to have Testing Computer Software in print again. --Richard Dragan

I think that Cem Kaner's book was perfect 20 years ago. Right now it's very funny in most chapters. For example we have a whole chapter for printer testing. I don't think that more than 1% of programmers are working now directly with hardware. Also, we have many examples for computers with 640Kb or RAM. Many examples and test types are expired. I was confused why editors didn't remove them or change. Anyway, I recommend to read it as an overview. Moreover, this book is more like reference, not a book for reading. So, buy it and have in your library.

I'm new to software testing, but I've taken a few classes and read a few books already, and this is the by far best resource I've found.
Each chapter starts with an overview of what it covers, why it's important, and key messages.
Chapter 3 - Test Types And Their Place In The Software Development Process is itself worth the price of the whole book. Clear, readable, understandable discussion of a variety of topics.
Chapters 12 and 13 tie all the ideas together. Together with chapter 3, these three chapters are the core of the book and where I got the most benefit.
The "example" chapters that discuss testing a printer are okay, but I just skimmed over them and didn't get much value.
Overall the writing style is very readable and understandable. The breadth and depth of coverage of the topic is idea for a new software tester.

I highly recommend this book to testers of all levels! Covers it all, positive, negative, boundary, stress etc.
I love the first chapters easy program breakdown. The authors came up with some fantastic sample tests both inside and outside the box.

although i agree that the kaplan q bank and usmle-world are invaluable resources for step one, i personally hate hate HATE to study on the computer. this book was a good solution. i found it true to the exam, and suited me and my need to have something physically in front of me to scribble on. solidly reviewing the questions in this book -- 2 or 3 times -- would be a good basis for taking step 1.

This is a great resource for boards prep. It breaks down questions by organ system, has a large "practice test", and has some basic science sections too. Its nice because you can review a specific organ system or area and then quiz yourself with questions directed toward that specific area too.

Until First Aid Q&A came out, there were not many sources with 1000+ questions and that covered multiple subjects. I've never written a review of a book before, but I felt myself compelled to write one on this book. I am currently looking for another review book and I can't find one that compares to this Q&A book. The book is actually broken down into sections like the boards. It's not broken down into sections on different systems (resp, cardiovascular, etc.) like most books. Whats the point in studying or practicing questions that are broken down into systems when that is not what the real boards are like? Also the book gives good rational and test taking strategies like eliminate 2&4 because they are similar. Basically this is the best book I've found ... Buy it!!!

The author did not take the time to include an index. The table of contents is just as bad, with everything lumped together into only a few categories. For those with specific questions, forget it. For those interested in a general NCLEX review who have already finished nursing school, it might but good to buy if you have already bought the ten other books that are better.
Great questions and explanations to prepare for NCLEX-RN.......2007-08-22
I bought several books to prepare for NCLEX, but I liked this book the best. I used other books and my notes from school to review contents, and used this book to practice questions. It does not cover each system one by one like nursing textbooks, but rather the chapters are organized in the NCLEX way (e.g. client needs, safe and effective care environment, health promotion, psychosocial integrity, etc.). I did not use CD as much as I planned at the time of purchase because the characters were small and made my eyes tired. (The characters on real NCLEX were bigger and clearer on the screen than this software.) I did not have any problem with this CD like the other reviewers. The book alone has 1810Qs, and they were more than enough for me. Although this book is thick (about 1 1/2 inches) and heavy, I liked the fact that I could take it to anywhere to study. I recognized several NECLEX questions similar to what I practiced in this book, and I passed in 75Qs!

This is a great book to practice nclex questions with. This book breaks it up into the categories that the acual nclex tests on like client needs, and safety. It's questions are also in a random order just like the nclex, however it doesn't break it up into body systems so it would not be a good book to use with your class material. (it you are looking for one of those I would suggest lipincott.) It also has a great column format that gives you the question, rational, and answer on the same page so there is no flipping between pages to get your answer. (This is a great time saver!) The only thing I wish this book had more of is the alternate format questions since those make up a lot of the questions on boards.
Just Passed Boards Using Saunders.......2007-07-07
This book has a wealth of practice questions. Using the Q&A book along with Saunder's Comprehensive Review book, I was able to pass the boards. These were the only books I used. Would have liked more multiple/alternate answer questions, but it still did the job! I would definitely recommend Saunders.

This handbook is a great asset for any college student that requires a great reference on all types of writing formats in an English course. The Handbook does clearify alot of misconceptions with writing formats such as MLA, APA, Chicago Manual, and many others. It also provides you examples on how the papers using such writing formats should appear on a paper.
I was able to even use for my research papers in History class even though i got it originally for my English course ENC1102.

I have found this to be the BEST writers' handbook of all the ones I've studied. I am a private tutor in Mountain View, California and I use it for my high school & college students.
It contains several great sections on how to develop ideas for writing essays, the best I've found anywhere. Plenty of examples for multiple disciplines: Social studies, Literature, Art, Business, and research papers. Well organized - each chapter contains references to other related sections.

I just finished a masters program in public policy, and though this book was not used in any of my classes, it was recommended reading. I have to say that it provides a great introduction to bureaucracies and why they are the way they are. (Spoiler: it's not, as many believe, because bureacrats are idiots) Coming from a background of small, private-sector organizations, this was especially useful for me.
I appreciate Wilson's taxonomies of various organizations. Every political scientist has to have a 2x2 matrix to divide the world, but one of Wilson's, that divides organizations into "production," "coping," "craft," and "procedural" is particularly useful. If you are planning a career in public service, you'd do well to take some time to match your personality to the type of organization you're thinking of joining.
This book is NOT a sociological examination of bureaucracy .......2007-03-10
Though the author does name drop Max Weber twice, this book is far from a concise sociological understanding of the concept bureaucracy. So reading it from this standpoint, the material would appear a bit long winded and inconcise. I would not recommend this book if you are interested in understanding bureaucracy from a sociological perspective. The focus is strictly government bureaucracy (mostly if not entirely a United States bureacracy analysis). "Search inside this book" and you can see how the author breaks up this focus. ( Don't be fooled by reading the paged provided to you by Amazon, the rest of the book isn't at all like those few beginning pages. The book gets more uninteresting as you read the following chapters.) In my opinion the book is overloaded with example that, as reader, you kind of lose focus as to what the points of those examples are. And it's almost as though these "examples" that the author provides are really suppose to be stand alone "stories of interest" The book was written in 1989 so all the examples are dated in that respect so if you purchase this book now in 2007, these examples may not be of any interest in and of themselves like I believe the author intended them to be. For 25 plus dollars I would say that this book really isn't worth a purchase but if money is not an issue or if you can get this book for less then whatever you know. It not even a very good book on government bureaucracy either in my opinion because the author really isn't very insightful in his analysis. Just read the review by Tansu Demir found in the review section and save your money.

Overall good book offering the student of Bureaucratic Behavior a unique insight into the wide variety of personality traits that are commonly found in today's bureacracies as well as an in-depth vew of how the US form of Governemnt operates in a sometimes difficult arena of these personalities. I do believe chapter summaries could have been better developed and in some cases there was too much in the examples and in some there was too little. Overall a good book on the subject.

Wilson, as usual, writes amazingly well in this comprehensive book covering bureaucracies, how they operate, and why bureaucrats act the way they do.
He discusses the different organizational features that persist across all bureaucracies, and why it is that once a bureaucracy is created it's almost impossible to get rid of. This may pique your interest if you've been following the recent attempts to solve our intelligence problems by adding more layers of bureaucrats, as if that will somehow solve the problem.
Highly recommended to all students of American politics.

"Brain and Behavior for and by dummies".......2007-08-25
Within the first two chapters, there are a number of misleading claims and outright falsehoods which make me question the intelligence and qualifications of its authors. They claim, for instance, that the brain's purpose is to create what the authors call a "sensory reality" (I can only assume they mean consciousness). Well, the fact is, a lot of good neurology and philosophy dealing with the subject matter is simply not clear on this matter--consciousness is likely to be an epiphenomenon not related too much to function. In fact, there are some studies that point to this possibility--being able to tell when a person will move their finger before they even realize it.
Another example of shoddy scholarship is found in the first and second chapters, respectively: Ironically, the authors discredit cartesian dualism in the first chapter rather offhandedly only to bring it back in the second. To quote the book, "Each function requires specific neural systems to create the sensory world, to produce movement (behavior) and to integrate the two." If they are separate, we seem to be back at some form of dualism--I'm not sure what the authors were thinking and I'm not sure they do either.
Consistent flaws coupled with a writing style that is downright insulting to the reader's intelligence make this a book to skip (if possible) when first learning about the brain and behavior.
Brain Fanatics.......2006-12-27
This textbook provides a thorough introduction to the brain, starting from the nerves to actual sensory systems (motor, auditory, visual etc.,). Even though I spent some time reading this book, I was disappointed the professor only referred to it once or twice and relied primarily on lectures to create tests. Besides providing the mechanism behind the flow of information in the brain, its discussion of how injuries to the brain result in certain conditions (visual agnosia, neglect syndrome, amnesia, aphasia etc.,) also helped my understanding of the material a lot. The biggest hurdle is understanding how nerves function, after that everything is more or less memorization.

It is simply an outline of all the important terms from the book. It might be helpful if you don't want to highlight your book, and want all important terms in one place, but it is not a substitute for the book.

This is an excellent resource that will help you understand and review several concepts in the PMBOK Guide. The only problem is that the answers provide quotes from the PMBOK Guide and no explanations. The questions are simplistic: may be good for the CAPM exam, but not for the PMP exam.
To prepare for the PMP Exam, I used the PMP Exam Quicklet by Paul Sanghera, which contains very realistic questions.

I will be taking my exam the first weekend in April and I feel that this book is an excellent tool to help you prepare. One of my co-workers who just took her exam said she saw 2 questions from the book on her actual exam. She passed and I am confident that I will pass also.
Not for PMP.......2007-02-22
Be warned that it doesn't contain the same type of situational questions that you will find in the PMP test. While these simple questions about concepts in the PMBOK might help you to practice for the CAPM test, the author doesn't even claim that the book will help you prepare for any test.
I bought this little book because I wanted to practice a little more, and because it was on sale. I finished it in less than two hours and never touched it again. A 100% success rate with these easy questions doesn't mean that you are prepared to pass the PMP test.
Nothing Better Than The Source!.......2007-01-09
I started off taking the classes to get my 23 credits to qualify for the CAPM exam. After I finished the schooling and started taking practice test I found I wasn't getting enough of the answers right. The second thing I did was order the Aileen exam prep guide and some flashcards but I ran into the same problem as before lol.
I always heard that the PMBOK is so hard to understand etc. When I actually took the time to read it for myself I found it informative. It's not something you read in a sitting but it's not impassible. I was reading a little each day and as of this writing on the last the chapter of the book.
Buying test prep materials is tricky because some authors give you their watered down version of the PMBOK but when the test comes they are testing on the words phases and process from the PMBOK not someone else's rendition of the book.
It's worth the investment. You can finish it in a month there are only 12 chapters. I recommend you do nothing but read the book first. Second take the classes/training. Third order a test prep book and flash cards.

Good book - I use this series to make my outlines, as they are usually more compreshensive with black-letter law than the texts. This one in particular is so much better than the actual text book we used. Buy this if you want to get a good crim law grade.
Lacking in Some Key Areas.......2007-05-01
This is not a bad book for what it purports to be: a companion volume to a criminal law course. If you're consulting it for quick explanations of things you've covered elsewhere and just need some clarification on, it does the job (though, to be fair, this is true of any of dozens of similar books, all available on Amazon).
That said, Crim. isn't the most complicated subject you'll face in law school (it's probably one of the easiest during the first year). If you're seeking out study aids, you're probably making up for a shoddy professor or cramming for an exam. This book isn't much good in either instance.
This book is unlike other volumes from the E&E series that I've used (and found very helpful) in that it really fails to stand on its own. Explanations are very often weak (and too many require you to go searching through chapters a hundred pages back). Tables that attempt to provide handy comparisons of MPC and common law provisions are slapped together and hard to follow (when you've done the studying and know what they're trying to convey, it's particularly striking how badly they fail at it. It's like borrowing notes from a classmate and trying to make sense of their personal shorthand). While the book does a nice job of referencing case law (which may or may not be in your particular casebook) it's less consistent on MPC sections-- explanations are to be accepted without a point of reference, leaving exam takers vulnerable to professors who will (as law professors ALWAYS do) twist the facts beyond the obvious application of the rule.

The upside of this E&E book is the writing. The authors of this book have quite a wicked sense of humor and it definitely shows in the practice example questions. The explanations, on the other hand, were limited in scope since the distinctions between common law jurisdictions and the MPC were not layed out completely. Probably the least helpful of the E&E series.

This book was very good. Dressler's classic "Understanding Criminal Law" has a more thorough (and probably better) explanation of the law. However, the Examples in this book are very helpful and as a result this book rivals Dressler's.
Almost Useless.......2006-04-19
Unlike most other Examples & Explanations Series, this one is one of the worst I have read. Authors waste too much time on history of criminal law and MPC, and very little time explaining the law. Common law and MPC are not distinguished and characterized well, and no clear conclusions of law are given. The example are very plane, without exploring the variety and complexity of real-life problems. Unbelievably, only 35 pages are spent on homicide, the most common and complex problem in criminal law, and the examples and explanations for homicide are terrible.

For several years I have considered John Feinstein to be one of my favorite authors and have read most of his books. His prior golf books were all excellent. He should have stopped, though, with A Good Walk Spoiled trying to characterize Q-school. He did a great job then and a poor job now. I'm beginning to think he's on an annual deadline with his publisher as his last few books have lacked the quality of his earlier ones in an effort to ht a deadline. It was all I could do to finish the book and did only because one of the first stage qualifiers of Q-school will soon be held at our local country club and wanted to get a feel of the pressure from someone who I thought could best articulate it. I should have reread A Good Walk Spoiled. And what's with all the name dropping in the credits. Geez, there must be a lot of famous people that get off seeing their name (again) in print. I'm beginning to enjoy Feinstein more as a radio commentator on NPR than an author.
A Rare Book Worth 5 Stars.......2007-09-10
I am no avid golfer but have been attracted to the Nationwide tour and Q school because even I knew there is so much more at stake there than worrying about who falls out of the PGA's top 10. This book has honest drama on every page. I didn't realize how many phases Q school had and that it is even more of a gauntlet than I had imagined. As you watch old pros who have tasted glory and money fall out and young guns move up or move out you really get into the tense mood that never lets up for the players trying for the magic PGA card. The author is a great writer and has done another exceptional job. Even if your not a golfer you'll enjoy the human stories and competition.

For golf fans, this book is a quadruple bogey...like a good hole, the concept was a good one but very poorly executed. Feinstein repeats himself constantly - where was the editor? The stories that he builds up to be so entertaining are flat out boring. Send this one back to writing school.
Feinstein Fatigue.......2007-08-03
I've read many of Feinstein's previous works and enjoyed some of them immensely. A Season on the Brink and A Good Walk Spoiled were outstanding. His last two books, however, have been disappointing.
Perhaps his style is such that over time it begins to wear and grate on you. I could swear that he wrote a similar book on Q school some years ago. Much of the story seems very familiar, though with different names. The old 40 something year old pro trying for one last shot. The former major winner relegated to Q school. The hot young junior golfer suddenly struggling to make the show. I've heard it before and to make matters worse, Feinstein seems to repeat himself throughout the book. He tells a story in the foreward and then repeats it in the body of the book, perhaps to beef up a work that can easily be read in one sitting.
If you watch the television special on Q school each year, you get the same story with video. Hold out for the TV special.
Must for any level golfer.......2007-08-02
I could'nt put this on down. Having read A Good Walk Spoiled some time ago I had forgotten how well John covers the topics he writes on. The Q school has got to be one of the hardest hustles there is and John as usual makes you feel as if you are there too if only as a spectator. Which for me would be plenty. I play alot of golf and keeping your mind in it helps an awful lot. I actually played better. I look foward to re-reading Good Walk and buying Open and Caddie for Life. Thank You.
