Book Description
This book offers a general, interdisciplinary discussion of global environmental change oriented toward the non-specialist in science. The unifying theme of the book is consideration of aspects of both natural and human-induced global environmental change. The two part organization according to this distinction allows for easy reading on specific topics. This book is useful for anyone interested in learning more about Earth's systems.

Mislead by index.......2007-03-22
I purchased this book after looking at several on the web. Of course all you get to see is the index. The index for this book looked great so I ordered it. It is filled cover to cover with general philosophy and no real application or even a difinitive solution to a problem. Even trying to edeucate yourself on a pinpoint subject matter requires going through several chapters to get the whole scoop. I'd gladly sell mine back at a loss, but I like bon fires.
Book Description
The Updated Second Edition contains materials about recent world events triggered by the September 11th attacks on New York City and Washington D.C.
KEY FEATURES:This book covers numerous topics, including Cultural Geography, The Geography of Languages and Religions, A World of States, and an examination of world affairs after the events of September 11. For those in the field of geography.
Customer Reviews:
Exellent text for introducing college students to Geography.......2000-05-20
I have used this text for approximately a year and found that the students are able to comprehend geography better with a systematic approach than a regional one. One of the things that sold me on this text was the auxillary material, particularly the webpage. The book is very easy to read and has excellent illustrations and photos. Needless to say, I highly recommend this text.

Book Description
The third edition of this successful textbook looks again at the influence of natural selection on behavior - an animal's struggle to survive by exploiting resources, avoiding predators, and maximizing reproductive success. However, in this edition, new examples are introduced throughout, many illustrated with full colour photographs. In addition, important new topics are added including the latest techniques of comparative analysis; the theory and application of DNA fingerprinting techniques; extensive new discussion on brood parasite / host coevolution; the latest ideas on sexual selection in relation to disease resistance; and a new section on the intentionality of communication. Written in the lucid style for which these two authors are renowned, the text is aided by boxed sections illustrating important concepts and new marginal notes which guide the reader through the text. This book will be essential reading for students taking courses in behavioural ecology.

A stimulating insight in animal (and human) behaviour.......2000-08-18
A well balanced, unique mix of ethology and sociobiology, with strong emphasis on the biologic and evolutionary sides of behaviour. It is concise but is easy reading. A must have, for those seriously interested in the field.
Book Description
This is the first text to thoroughly cover nongenetic strategies of human adaptation to a variety of ecosystems. Designed to help students understand the multiple levels at which human populations respond to their surroundings, it is the most complete discussion of environmental, physiological, behavioral, and cultural adaptive strategies available. Among the unique features that make Human Adaptability outstanding as both a textbook and a reference are a complete discussion of the development of ecological anthropology and of relevant research methods; the use of an ecosystem approach with emphasis on arctic, high altitude, arid land, grassland, and tropical rain forest environments; the most extensive bibliography on ecological anthropology published to date, with over 700 references both classic and recent; and a comprehensive glossary of technical terms. In this updated edition, the author also addresses the impact of political economy, global environment change, demography, and health in the study of human ecology.
Customer Reviews:
Great integration of Modern Ecological Anthropology.......2007-05-09
I would say quite hastily that this book is probably the best introduction to Ecological Anthropology, written by a massive authority on the subject. What I love about the book is its ability to present the pertinent aspects of the subject matter in a way that forces you to understand why it is important. My only caveat about the book is that it does assume a certain degree of knowledge about environmental science that I found most students of anthropology (including myself when I read it) do not have. Keeping this in mind, if you do have supplementary texts available on the natural science aspects of this subject, than you will definately be able to appreciate the depths of human adaptability that Moran describes. This cannot necessarily be considered a weakness of the book, since the natural science has been discussed elsewhere. On the other hand, the material in this book is a great compilation of cultural, physiological, and genetic adaptations around the world. Since it is this that Moran stresses, it is of no detriment to the book that the natural science is not as detailed as it must be.
Below is a list of supplementary texts that should be read alongside this book, the most important one being the soil science textbook.
1) The Nature and Properties of Soils - by Nyle Brady & Ray Weil
2) Ecology: Theories and Applications - by Peter Stiling
3) A book on Human Biology and Human Physiology (I have not found one to my liking which is why I don't recommend a specific one here).

Silent Spring
ASIN: 1566700949 |
Book Description
Introduction to Chemical Exposure and Risk Assessment focuses on the principles involved in assessing the risks from chemical exposure. These principles include the perception of risk, an understanding of how numbers are handled, and how chemicals affect health. The book briefly describes the major sinks, such as water and air, where chemicals are introduced. This is followed by a discussion on how concentrations are estimated and risk assessments are made. A discussion of risk benefit analysis and a presentation of several case studies using the principles for assessing risks are also included.
Book Description
Our consumption patterns are threatening to outstrip Earth's ability to support humanity and other species. A sustainable future will require sweeping changes in public behavior.
While conventional marketing can help create public awareness, social marketing identifies and overcomes barriers to long-lasting behavior change. This ground-breaking book is the primary resource for the emerging new field of community-based social marketing, and an invaluable guide for anyone involved in designing public education programs with the goal of promoting sustainable behavior, from recycling and energy efficiency, to alternative transportation.

The Community-Based Social Marketing Primer.......2005-10-10
I don't know if McKenzie-Mohr coined the buzz-terms used in Community-based Social Marketing, but he covers them (at the introductory level) completely in this book. Case studies and personal experiences offer practical examples to the lingo commonly used in CBSM, plus plenty of articles are referenced for further reading. If you've heard about "Prompts" and "Norms" associated with CBSM and need to know what everyone's talking about, this is a great place to start.

Book Description
The environmental sciences are undergoing a revolution in the use of models and data. Facing ecological data sets of unprecedented size and complexity, environmental scientists are struggling to understand and exploit powerful new statistical tools for making sense of ecological processes.
In Models for Ecological Data, James Clark introduces ecologists to these modern methods in modeling and computation. Assuming only basic courses in calculus and statistics, the text introduces readers to basic maximum likelihood and then works up to more advanced topics in Bayesian modeling and computation. Clark covers both classical statistical approaches and powerful new computational tools and describes how complexity can motivate a shift from classical to Bayesian methods. Through an available lab manual, the book introduces readers to the practical work of data modeling and computation in the language R. Based on a successful course at Duke University and National Science Foundation-funded institutes on hierarchical modeling, Models for Ecological Data will enable ecologists and other environmental scientists to develop useful models that make sense of ecological data.
- Consistent treatment from classical to modern Bayes
- Underlying distribution theory to algorithm development
- Many examples and applications
- Does not assume statistical background
- Extensive supporting appendixes
- Accompanying lab manual in R
Book Description
Modeling the Environment is the first introductory textbook for a technique of rapidly growing importance. It requires little or no mathematical background, and is appropriate for undergraduate environmental students as well as professionals new to modelling. Developed from the author's own introductory course, it is classroom-tested and represents an important contribution to the field of system dynamics.
Modeling techniques that allow managers and researchers to see in advance the consequences of actions and policies are becoming increasingly important to environmental management. The models produced are vital analytical tools that aid the policy-setting and implementation process, and help us to understand how environmental systems respond to management interventions.
Modeling the Environment is a basic introduction to one of the most widely known and used modeling techniques, system dynamics. The book is designed to build the skills of students as they progress from learning fundamental ideas to constructing models of increasing complexity. Written in a clear and comprehensible style, the book:
- presents basic concepts of modeling using system dynamics
- illustrates the mechanics of model construction through a range of working models
- offers a rich array of exercises for students to use in applying the principles and techniques described in the text
- walks students through the design and application of models of specific types of environmental systems
.
In addition, the book contains more than 300 figures and model illustrations, and provides a guide to an interactive website where students can use the text to "navigate" management flight simulators ? models of both real and hypothetical systems developed by the author. The book also contains appendixes that help students review the necessary math, and which provide additional concepts and exercises for further study.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book for Anyone.......2006-12-12
This is a great book for anyone who wants to gain a thorough understanding of Stella software. The book is easy to read, and the examples and case studies are well chosen.
Great interdisciplinary book on environmental modeling.......2000-05-24
A highly readable introduction to environmental modeling. What distinguishes the book from other environmental science and environmental modeling works is its interdisciplinary treatment. In particular, the models integrate the physical world and the world of human behavior. Far too many environmental models fail to close the feedbacks between human behavior and the state of the environment, instead taking waste inputs or resource use as exogenous. This book helps students learn to model human behavior (social and economic) as an integral part of the ecological system. The models and software mean the book encourages active learning, and enable students to explore important issues on their own if they choose.
Modeling the Environment.......2000-04-24
This book is easy to read and contains clear examples of how to use stella software to model the environment. The marvel here is the software, not the book. For the software timid, it might suppliment the software users guide.
