Good repair book.......2007-07-22
Good book for the first time home buyer or anyone that is interested in doing some basic fix-it-up or simple repairs. There are good illustrations and explanations. Some of the book is outdated, but there is plenty here to recommend it.
Outdated manual.......2007-04-12
I was somewhat disappointed in this book. I was expecting some good how-to pointers on fixing things around the house. I received a book that is very outdated. It gave instructions on fixing cassette decks and turntables. And who fixes broken toasters? I did find a few good pointers, but not like I expected.
Out-of-date.......2007-03-23
The book is definitely out-of-date, having been published in 1996. I bought this one, looked at it a bit and returned it. Ended up buying the Black and Decker book instead (published 2004).
Good reference to have........2007-03-05
I have ahd this book for several years and I have found it to be a handy book to have. It covers a large variety of items with pretty clear instructions. Take care!

Dinosaurs are great!.......2007-09-28
This has fast become my son's favorite book! He asks for it all the time and is also learning good manners too!
My grandkids.......2007-08-23
I bought this book for my grandson, (2), but my grand-daughter, (4), also loves it. The book is in a series and since my grandson loves it so much I am buying more of the series. I like it because he can't rip it up and the pictures are so clear that we can use it for educational purposes and they don't even know it.
Fun book but badly translated.......2007-07-12
I bought this book so my father who is Peruvian would have a Spanish book to share with my son. Unfortunately, he says that the translation is terrible. So, being a good Papa, he just makes up the story according to the pictures. My son doesn't mind because he so loves the dinos and their mischievous behavior.
I'm disappointed because I thought I'd be able to read it to him and work on my own Spanish which I won't be doing since it's not a good translation.
I got a second opinion from a Spanish-speaking friend and she agrees that the translation is not very good.
A DINO HIT.......2007-02-15
My three yr old grandson loves this book and he is currently very
fascinated by Dinosaurs. It gets the message across about a clean
room and at the same time it is laugh out loud funny. The clever
illustrations are a winner too. You won't go wrong with this fun
book! Thanks Amazon.

great book!.......2007-01-04
my 3 year old loves this book and it helps motivate him to clean up his "dinosaur" room
Book Description
The international bestseller How Clean Is Your House? is a new kind of cleaning bookÂfull-color, hilarious, and fun. Packed with trade secrets and inventive cleaning solutions, it goes through the house room by room, offering doÂ's and donÂ'ts, step-by- steps, and before-and-after Âgrime scene photographs.
Kim Woodburn and Aggie MacKenzie are known as Âthe queens of clean from Lifetime Television and The Oprah Winfrey Show. Tips include:
Use a banana peel to dust plants; the dust clings to the skin and the juice nourishes the leaves
Leave laundry detergent to soak in your bathtub overnightÂthe tub will gleam in the morning (no scrubbing required)
To loosen dirt and grease inside the microwave, put a few slices of lemon in an uncovered bowl of water and cook on high for 3 minutes.

Good Book.......2007-10-14
I love the show and was disappointed that Lifetime no longer shows it but BBC still doesn
The book is great. I have learned a few things that I have never seen on the show.
Just makes you want to get up and clean something! .......2007-10-02
Kim Woodburn and Aggie MacKenzie tackle some of the messiest houses on two continents, and they do it with humor and style. Just because you're elbow deep in muck is no reason not to look elegant! (I especially like their glamorously trimmed rubber gloves.)
This terrific companion book to the TV series, "How Clean Is Your House," isn't a comprehensive guide on how to clean anything and everything. It's just a fun little book with hundreds of tips from Kim and Aggie. It's hard to keep reading though - you keep wanting to get up and dust something!
The chapter called "Getting Started" includes both ladies' preferences for putting together an essential cleaning kit. Kim and Aggie prefer simple, easily available things like white vinegar, salt, baking soda, lemons, laundry soap - even denture cleaning tablets. It's amazing how common items and a little elbow grease work miracles if you know when and where to use them.
Other chapters offer advice on Kitchens, Living Rooms, Bathrooms, Bedrooms, Pets and Allergies.
These ladies really know how to motivate people and make cleaning fun!

Love These Ladies!.......2007-09-19
Excellent book, makes me want to clean my house! I like that they use so many common household supplies (lemons, baking soda, vinegar, etc.) instead of commercial chemicals.
Hip, Funny and Helpful.......2007-08-18
Gotta love these two old British biddies with their "Oh my gawds" style of speaking. Their show is grand and the book is not bad. One of my peeves is on the show they use the term "biological powder" but never tell you what that is. A friend says it's "Fab" but that's just detergent, right? The girls don't mention what biological powder is in their book nor own their website. This is frustrating. Other than that, it's a good romp about how to clean your house - start in the bedroom first! - and move to the front (or bottom) of the house. Super advice. Good writing. Nice presentation. Lots of colorful photos.
How much happier a clean house makes you........2007-08-10
Kim and Aggie change lives- If you have never seen the TV show, these women go into homes that should rightfully be condemned, clean them from top to bottom, and return them to the owners with stern warnings to "keep it clean". The book is an extension of this fantastic show that literally transforms people's lives. One can easily underestimate how much cleanliness and order contributes to a happy life. This book is a great guide to achieving and maintaining such order. The cleaning tips and methods are smart and easy and the cleaning solutions they use made from borax, salt, vinegar, baking soda, lemon to name a few are "cheap and cheerful". Cleaning made fun.

Customer Reviews:
Good reference..........2007-01-12
Not really the type you sit down to enjoy, but very good as a reference for cleaning. Handy.
I also like that the author tries to use natural cleaning products, although it's not always practical to make your own concoctions.
She's the Queen, But..........2006-08-11
I love Linda Cobb's cheery, enthusiastic attitude towards cleaning. But this book seems like it was written in a hurry, with inconsistent advice, very few explanations of procedures, and incomplete indexing. At one point, she says that vacuuming twice a week is essential, in another place, she says once a week is fine. Rarely is there an explanation as to why something works, or why something should be done in a certain way. And yikes! How to find alll the references to perspiration stains? Not in the index. You've got to sweat it out through the whole book to find all the suggestions. I truly hope the Queen writes a second edition with all the details I know she would like to impart.
Great Idea -- Poor Execution.......2005-12-09
I bought Queen of Clean thinking that it would be a great resource guide. One would think the "Queen" of clean, could provide this bachelor with some organization and structure throughout the year.
After my New Year's resolution to maintain a neater household, I quickly paged through the book thinking it was a perfect fit. Her ideas and the information she shares are quite helpful.
My problem -- did the editors ever think that an index might be necessary? On several occassion when I've needed an instant suggestion (i.e. the romoval of a wine stain or cleaning my showerhead), I have been unable to locate the solution, though I know it is in there somewhere. After fifteen minutes (the stain is already setting in) of fumbling through the spiral binder which feels like any page could tear with an easy turn, [...]. My solutions popped up instantly.
My suggestion is: save yourself the $20 and get high speed internet.
How the Queen Cleans Everything.......2005-09-12
This is a very useful and well-written guide to cleaning everything.
Not what I thought.......2004-09-27
I was anxiously awaiting this book arrival when I ordered it and was somewhat dissapointed at the result. This book has a lot of useful information, but a lot of the info is not new and can be found in any old Home cleaning or organizing book. I was looking for unique, brand new, undiscovered solutions to commom cleaning dilemmas and was let down when I came across the same old stuff( some that work and some don't)!!

A must read for "collectors".......2006-07-14
I LOVE this book. So much I read it twice and am currently reading another of his books. So far this one is my favorite. Some of it is "fluff" but he makes you see that it is a joke keeping all the stuff you probably should throw out. It makes you laugh and say yep I do that! Since reading this book, I haven't been able to totally dejunk my home; however, before purchasing anything - I really think about the item and where I would put it in our home.
"Everything you get takes looking after.".......2006-05-30
Don Aslett has done more than anyone else I know of to help us clear up the clutter. I read his book, Clutter's Last Stand" many years ago.I dig it out every once in a while and thumb through it to help me "Get Back on the Wagon".You'll find a review on it amongst my reviews dated December 29,2005. By the way ,a good decluttering principle is followed here;Amazon keeps and stores these reviews---not me!
This book is pretty much like his others in principles;but I never tire of reading the reasons for and the suggestions given for de-junking.
Even if you are not a junk ammasser;you'll really love this book, because it will show you that you have been right all along--by natural instinct.
Then there are the rest of us who are junk collectors by instinct reinforced by yeard of dedication ,practice and our own finely honed instincts.
Even if you have the will power to ignore all of Don's reasons, suggestions ,insinuations, you'll still enjoy the book for the excuses for keeping junk;as he'll have some even you have never heard or used. Keeping junk is a fine art and you can utilize all the help you can get. From Don,you'll be learning from the master himself,as he has devoted his life to this subject. You've probably seen numerous little newspaper and magazine articles over the years on this subject;but none can hold a candle to what you will find in this gem of a book. This book of 214 pages is loaded with humor,a zillion illustrations and every excuse imaginable and will give you hours of side-splitting laughter. If you really want to drive someone nuts;put a 'brown wrapper' on it and let the belly-laughs roll.On second thought ,try a cover from a True Crime Stories.
I really enjoyed Chapter 16,"Dear but Not Departed"
Don gives us great lines like;
"Your junk and clutter will survive you, count on it."
"She was so young. She had so much (stuff) to live for."
"The funeral is over;many mourners paid tribute and now will
pay dearly for what you left behind."
"Suddenly your death isn't a sweet sorrow,it's a sorry mess."
"You wanted your good stuff to carry on in life,to live on,and
now it's being carried off."
"If you're the kind of person who says."Big deal,it won't be
my worry," you're not only a packrat.you're a dirty rat."
As to shopping sales, bargains ,free offers, etc. "Don't go to
the Devil's workshop,if you don't want to do business with
him."
So how do you get rid of all your junk? Simple;get rid of everything that hasn't moved in the last 6 months and read a
chapter of this book every month.
Have I been successful? well hardly.I just got rid of 10 books.Problem is;I've over 700 to go. However; I've got the best of intentions.
Good Luck!!
Amusing fluff.......2001-06-20
I bought this book before moving to another house. It *IS* a funny, easy-to read diatribe about how to bring yourself to throw things away. It *IS NOT* a comprehensive method about how to organize your space and house. If you want to get organized, have a practical, functional and nice-to-live-in home, buy Julie Morgenstern's "Organizing from the Inside Out". However, if you want to have a laugh and gain confidence about dumping the dusty junk in your cellar or attic, this is the book for you.
Excellent book!.......2000-10-13
I was so inspired to declutter my house, I couldn't even wait till I had finished reading the whole book, I started right in on some overflowing drawers. I like his writing style; it's very down-to-earth and funny, especially when he mentions some of the things he himself had accumulated before he "saw the light." I laughed out loud several times while reading it. He really gets into the nitty-gritty details of decluttering too, like how to identify clutter, why you've saved it, excuses and reasons for cluttering/saving, how to get rid of it, and even how to spot potential clutter before you even acquire it. There was no aspect of clutter that he didn't cover. I loved the cartoons too; they really hit home and lightened up the whole prospect of the task ahead. I highly recommend this book. After decluttering my own areas, my husband (who said he didn't have any clutter) starting reading the book and amazingly found some things he could part with too. Yippee! I plan on re-reading parts of it whenever I start backsliding. (Yes, he covers that too.)
Life changing advice!.......2000-08-08
I highly recommend this book for anyone swimming in junk and wanting to make their life less "cluttered". My husband and I are both long-time pack-rats and this book has helped us get started on sifting through the mounds of stuff. When I get stuck I pick up and read the book just for inspiration on how to get started again. Mr. Aslett recognizes that pack-rats are emotionally involved with their stuff and counsels you through how to overcome that problem. We have managed to get rid of huge amounts of things that we really didn't need to keep and I don't know if we would have gotten this far without his advice and "counseling". I'd recommend this book to anyone wanting to simplify their life with less "stuff".
Book Description
International travel is growing in popularity but sometimes exacts a price. Activities we take for granted - eating, bathing, and going to the bathroom - can range from challenging to risky in unfamiliar territory. Dr. Jane Wilson-Howarth knows plenty about the third of these quandaries, having spent six months in the Himalayas fending off parasites and leeches while doing research. In Shitting Pretty, she takes a humorous, sympathetic approach to one of the most basic of human activities, interweaving anecdotes from fellow travelers with sensible tips and techniques for how to avoid diarrhea, parasites, malaria, and scarier diseases such as encephalitis and pulmonary edema. She covers the basics of how to eat and drink safely, explains symptoms and cures, and also tells why gastrointestinal diseases - the traveler's most common complaint - occur. More than just a how-to (though it is that), the book aims to inspire the traveler to be adventurous and not embarrassed in dealing with foreign toilets, and to pay heed to the fascinating cultural lessons to be learned from the simple act of going to the bathroom.
Customer Reviews:
Shitting Pretty: How to Stay Clean and Healthy While Traveling (Travelers' Tales Guides.).......2007-03-09
This is a well written, thoughtful, informative book that provides real life examples on taking care of your natural functions in strange places. It also provides significant data on how to stay healthy in these strange places.
Worthy companion to Bugs Bites & Bowels.......2004-04-15
Even if you never venture forth to "go" into the wild, this is a great read. Dr. Wilson-Howarth's style is very, very entertaining.
The trouble is, you'll have all these fascinating titbits of conversation starters, but when to use them?
Don't let the crude title of the book fool you!.......2003-11-21
The title of the book may sound somewhat crude, however, if you are a traveler, I am sure you have at one time or another being a victim of "Montezuma's revenge" or "Tourista."
No doubt most of us are aware that these are common terms used for an awful attack of traveler's diarrhea. Dr. Jane Wilson-Howarth, a fellow of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, in her book entitled, Shitting Pretty, How to Stay Clean And Healthy While Traveling, was daring enough to write freely about a topic we find revolting to discuss.
Nevertheless, we must be realistic, and if we plan to travel anywhere in the world we must be aware of the various risks involved pertaining to the food we eat and the water we drink. As the author mentions in the introduction, "this little book will-I trust- allow you to enjoy your adventures with the minimum of forced gastrointestinal stops." The principal objectives of the book are to provide the reader with strategies to avoid illness and ensure a healthy trip.
One warning I have is that some of the author's descriptions as well as the various sidebar antidotes provided by fellow travelers can at times be humorous but at the same time somewhat obnoxious. In fact, the reactions I received from my wife and friends upon reading the book were, "Oh My God!"
Nonetheless, Dr.Wilson-Howarth uses everyday language devoid of medical jargon in order that we can easily comprehend what she is attempting to explain to us.
The topics expanded upon in this medical advisory guidebook include the various kinds of diarrhea, their causes and how to avoid it. We are also apprised about toilet facilities in various countries, particularly in third world countries, and how to cope with them. Other issues such as, how safe is the water, weird foods, how to cope when on a long voyage and bathing are likewise expounded upon in order that we have a general knowledge of the risks inherent in traveling to various countries. The ending of each chapter highlights in summary form the principal topic of the section.
The author also enlightens us about certain subjects, such as the history of toilet paper. I bet you did not know that toilet paper is a recent invention. According to the author, the first Gayety's Medicated Paper was produced in England in 1857 and came in flat packs. It was a product for the rich, and one that people were embarrassed to purchase: it was kept out of sight under the counter and euphemistically called curl paper. It was only in 1928 that toilet paper appeared. This certainly can prove to be an interesting bit of information when you are trying to make conversation at a cocktail party!...
"go" in peace!.......2003-06-27
Dr. Wilson-Howarth, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, has a finely tuned sense of humor & courtesy of our Victorian ancestors, our language is thick with euphemisms for this most basic of deeds.
Don't dismiss her timely & important information just because she's funny, she has a lot to teach us. You will learn how to:
-- avoid minor & major intestinal disruptions & diseases, as well as symptoms & cures.
-- eat, drink & be safe in a foreign place.
-- tame your bodily functions on those long rides.
-- travel with children & keep them well.
-- make environmentally & hygienically sound deposits
-- cope without toilet paper.
-- identify the critters who thrive in dark & moist areas.
Then set about discovering the amazing variety of foreign toilets...& so much more!
A seriously informative & amusing book with a host of helpful hints from well-traveled world trekkers.
Excellent.......2001-03-13
I just wish someone had given me this book before my last trip to India where I caught jardia. I like to think that this book may have helped. I had to bribe a bus driver to stop the bus in open country near Jaipur, but couldn't perform under the bemused gaze of about 50 Indian travellers. When I got back on the bus my bowels exploded when the bus hit the next pot-hole in the road and I soiled myself. If that was not enough, half an hour later I vomitted on an elderly woman sitting next to me who had until that point been polite enough not to mention the horrendous smell. I'll remember to pack this book next time I travel in the hope of avoiding a repeat of this ghastly experience.

The book exceeded all my expectations offering advice on all facets of window cleaning.
Take the frustrations out of window cleaning........2006-01-14
I work as a porter in the houskeeping department of a hospital. Recent cutbacks have resulted in more burdens placed on the remaining staff. And so,I found myself covering other areas. One of which, required the cleaning of the lobby windows.
Given a good flip-back squeegee but no training and twenty-five minutes to clean two dozen 7'x3'windows,I became overwhelmed and stressed out. The only advice from my supervisor was to go back and wipe the streaks.
When I recieved John Baxter's"How to Clean Windows Like the Pro's",I couln't put the book down until I read it from cover to cover. The touble shooting section and the ten window cleaning commandments addressed all of the frustrations and problems that tormented me on my first attempts to clean those large windows. After several rereads I couldn't wait until the next time I got that assignment. Last week I recieved complements from a hospital director for the job I was doing on those windows.
My only criticism is that suppliers aren't listed in the appendix: no big deal these days with internet browsers.
This book and a professional quality squeegee(see page 10)will make you want to clean your neighbor's windows after you have finished all of yours!

Customer Reviews:
Pretty well wuthless..........2007-07-23
I didn't know much about cleaning - and I still don't after browsing this book. Full of generalized & fairly obvious observations about cleaning that anybody whose ever picked up a broom or mop could tell you.
I have had a few specific issues I had hoped this book would provide guidance on, such as smoke stains. Forget it, there's nothing, nada, zippo on this common problem. I can't remember the other ones, but I know I've learned more just by browsing the instructions on the containers in the cleaning products section at K-mart.
Ironic, this book is put out by Consumer Reports, the people who are supposed to PREVENT rip offs...
Easy to Use Book.......2007-01-05
This book is a great book to have when it comes to cleaning household objects. I've been able to access the information quickly to clean odd household items. Most of their suggestions work well.
A great reference book.......2006-09-06
This book is compact and contains extremely useful information about cleaning some very commonplace things that you're never really sure how to clean.
Keeping Your House in Tip Top Condition.......2006-01-09
Consumer Reports is a division of Consumers Union, a non- profit organization that was established in 1936. This group is known primarily for its magazine publication and for its testing and rating of consumer products. But it also tests other consumer- related services and how to best maintain the appearance of consumer goods. That's how this book was created. It's the accumulation of years and years of experience and testing, conducted by the Consumer Reports Technical Division.
Some of the advice in this book is pretty good, while other advice seems a little silly, almost insulting to one's intelligence. I found the most helpful parts of the book to be chapter 2 and chapter 4. With chapter 2, you can look through the alphabetized listing and find the item that needs to be cleaned, along with a description of how best to approach the task (the appropriate cleaning agent and the equipment to do the job). Many of these descriptions are brief, however, and they don't always cover the specifics. For example, if you lookup advice on cleaning lighting fixtures, you will be presented with a generalized way to clean. You will not see any advice that relates to specific types of stains. The only area of the book that gets specific is chapter 4, and it covers only the major cleaning tasks (furniture, carpeting, clothing, and floors). But it does present some good advice on cleaning. For example, if you have a cigarette burn mark on a non- wood floor, Consumer Reports guide tells you exactly how to best remove it, using a mixture of lemon juice and water.
Other parts of this book get a little silly. If you lookup advice on washing dishes, for instance, it tells you to "start by filling the sink with hot water and add a squirt of dishwashing liquid, then use a sponge or dishcloth". (Great! Now I know why my dishwashing methods weren't working- I forgot to use water!). Other subjects are equally obvious and will insult your intelligence.
I don't know if some of the cleaning suggestions are completely safe, and I don't know if I would trust some of these ideas on valuable items. Take gold jewelry. This guide recommends using a mixture of ammonia and water and immersing the jewelry for about one minute before wiping clean with a cloth. I can't speak for everyone, but I really don't know if I would feel safe dropping an expensive piece of gold jewelry into a mixture with ammonia. I know that Consumer Reports has a solid reputation for giving advice, but I would be wary of using cleaning materials like this on something valuable.
Overall, this is a pretty good book. Some of the advice is obvious, and some of it is useful. I have only tried a few of the suggestions here (like cleaning out a coffeemaker) and the ones I have tried have worked well. But that doesn't mean that everything contained in this book will work for any situation. Many specific types of cleaning problems are not covered, and there are unique situations that would probably require the help of a professional.
I give this book a marginal recommendation. While it is very brief, it can help you with your household cleaning chores by explaining exactly how to tackle certain stains on carpet, flooring, and all around the house.
so-so.......2005-10-08
I learned a few things from this book. The thing I did find helpful in it is the directory of how to clean virtually avery surface. The basic cleaning tips taught though are very minimal and are things that most people already know.
Book Description
There’s no way, and probably no good reason, to be subtle about it — diarrhea, parasites, and other gastrointestinal unpleasantries can be part of the price travelers pay for trying to see the world. Fortunately, this frank, witty guide lets world-explorers fight back against their invisible assailants. A noted traveler and writer, Dr. Wilson-Howarth explores such issues as sanitizing unhealthy water, safely consuming exotic foods, avoiding dehydration, keeping good hygiene on the road, and immunization. A special section details the dreaded creatures — spiders, leeches, worms — that can put any tour into a tailspin. With special tips for children and elderly travelers, as well as ways to dodge ailments such as malaria, typhoid, and hepatitis, How to Shit Around the World is the perfect, if not the most polite, traveling companion.
Customer Reviews:
Solid and steamy stuff!.......2006-12-08
If you've ever had any gastro issues then you'll enjoy this book, especially if you travel abroad. Of course there are areas of the U.S. that are like third world countries. Good entertainment value, but solid and useful info too. I'd recommend it.
Good advice for staying healthy on the road.......2006-09-05
Looking for a book on squat toilets, getting the runs, and getting the runs while using a rough squat toilet? Not the best mealtime read, but good preparation for what the road throws at you. There's a wealth of info on eating right, drinking right, the risks of seafood, and keeping the little ones healthy. The differentiating factor for this book though is it doesn't stop there. Where else can you get a whole chapter on toilet paper and the lack thereof, bathing in a stream, or what to do when it's that time of the month and you're on a mountain ascent?
Throughout the book there are short snippets from doctors, from aid workers, and from others with life experience combating nasty bugs and diseases. If you're a parent wanting to make sure your about-to-leave child knows how to keep healthy, or you're the type who likes to be ready for anything, this is a valuable book. Anyone about to go off on a long-term volunteer assignment in a rural environment should make room for it in the pack.
Amusing and very, very informative.......2006-02-05
This is a very interesting book written by a physician. The advice is sound and many of the anecdotes are laugh out loud. My favorite was the one about the ziggurat of colonic filth
