Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-07-16

WE took this to the beach with us this year and my kids used it every day. WE had so much fun with it. The pictures in the book are great for identifying shells, fish, etc. at the SC and NC Coast. We found a lot of the things pictured in the book. Easy to understand descriptions! I recommend this book to anyone ... especially homeschooling families!!!

4 out of 5 stars Serviceable and Entertaining.......2004-05-20

My goal in purchasing this book, which pulls together information about birds, shells, dune plants, and fish was to be able to pack one slim volume instead of the bag of field guides I usually took to the Outer Banks. After two trips to North Carolina in the last year, I have found that I still need to carry a couple of other references because this is not comprehensive in any one of its categories--and how could it be at 148 pages? However, Meyer's guide does manage to cover many of the specimens commonly found along the Carolina coast. Furthermore, it is written in a graceful voice that keeps you reading long after you've put a name to the beastie you found on the beach. It is not childish or simple at all, but it can be used by the entire family. It stirs wonder.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting guide..........2003-03-07

Being a transplant from Michigan, I had little knowledge of coastal animals and plants. I purchased this book to satisfy my curiosity. I'm not knowledgeable enough as the other reviewer who found the inaccuracies in the book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book. The information is presented in a very interesting way and all the photographs are in color. I can't wait to spend more time on the coast and see some of the creatures myself. I'll definitely have this guide on hand. I also enjoyed the respect the author has for nature.

2 out of 5 stars Some SERIOUS problems in the plates, otherwise ok.......2002-08-07

Overall an ok book for a beginner. If you come into this as a naturalist you will likely be disapointed. There are some other serious problems that I was able to spot straight out.

Plate 40. "Auger Shells" One of the 'augers' is not only NOT an auger and it's not even from the Carolinas at all. It's the Common Vertagus (a certh) from the Indo-Pacific (likely from the Philippines).

Plate 54. "Oyster Drills". Contains several Murexes in addition to the drills.

Plate 59. Sundials. The figured Sundial is not The American Sundial (Architectonica nobilis) but rather the Clear Sundial (Architectonica perspectiva) also from the Indo-Pacific.

The substitution of shells from the other side of the world really shows sloppy work in this guide. The other major problem I have with the book is that it just isn't complete enough; it only shows a small fraction of the plants and animals that one finds on Carolina coasts. The naturalist who trys to depend on this book will likely be frustrated and will find that they need other guides. As an introduction for a beginner it is ok, short the above noted plate problems.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly accurate with astonishing photos.......1999-01-04

For the past four years I have had a place at the beach. Dr. Meyer's book has become our bible. Using it, shells, shorebirds and seaside flora are easily identified by my family, friends and renters. Being an amateur photographer, I am in total awe of the skill of the other physician who took the pictures.

Don't look here for hotel or restaurant info. This is a beach book, so check in here by county to see the well-known beaches and those that will surprise you. The author selected Hammocks Beach State Park as the best of the lesser known beaches. He suggests the best beaches for first time visitors, the best for sports oriented vacations, and the best for visiting in the off-season.
The information is detailed, giving the things you need to know for your vacation. Want a boat ramp, or to see a lighthouse? This books tells you where to go. (The Associated Press reviewed this book favorably.)

Book Description

The Secret Lives of Fishermen is Jim Dean's second book of essays celebrating wild places, rural traditions, and the pleasures and often humorous frustrations of fishing, hunting, hiking, and camping—or, as Dean might put it, "messing around" outdoors. It combines essays originally published in his monthly "Our Natural Heritage" column in Wildlife in North Carolina with longer pieces that appeared in other magazines. These forty-six engaging essays are arranged in a loose chronicle of the sporting year, but they seldom follow predictable routes. From a whimsical story about discovering live wood ducks in a cabin stove to a poignant memoir of summers spent in a remote riverside shack, all of the pieces are bound by a conviction that our resources and time are limited and our finest memories are shared.

The title notwithstanding, not all of the essays in The Secret Lives of Fishermen are about fishing, nor are readers likely to discover any shocking secrets—unless they are surprised to learn that fishermen and hunters have myriad interests and seldom measure success by the number of fish caught or game bagged.

Book Description

Chip Clewt, whom people have named the “weirdo,” is determined to protect the Powhatan swamp from the local hunters. “An eloquent debate pitting human and animal rights against each other is both informative and moving as this murder mystery/love story/environmental thriller weaves its uncommon spell. Deftly drawn characterizations, from the admirable to the loathsome, and an engrossing journalistic format are two of the many strong points that make this timely and compelling novel a winner.”--Publishers Weekly

5 out of 5 stars A Great Read!.......2007-09-30

T. Taylor's, The Weirdo is a great novel that has everything from science to suspence. It is a great educational read for 8th & 9th graders. It is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat from page one. It's a great read for all ages!

4 out of 5 stars "The Weirdo" is cool!!.......2006-12-05

I really liked this book. It started with the adventures right away. Also the author explained the book really well so you can understand it.
This book had a bit of violence and creepy parts. It also had a bit of bad language. I would not recommend this book as a bed-time story. I also think it would be a good idea to read this book with your parents if you are younger than ten.

1 out of 5 stars The Werido.......2005-12-07

I must say that I was not forced to read The Weirdo. I also must say that I will never pick it up again. The book is about these two teenagers, Sam and Chip, who are defending themsleves for the bears. The beginning was ok, but then in the middle the book kept switching off from Chip to Sam and it got really boring. The one good thing is that Chip learns to stand up for himself about his image, and Sam stands up for herself against her father. Unless you like boring books about bears and someone murdering someone else and then these two idiot teenagers falling in love, then this isn't the book for you. I thought this book was going to be good... I thought wrong. I just hope I get a good grade on the test.
Question for anyone who has read the book: where does it take place? like I know its the Powhatan River and in the 1990's, but what state???

2 out of 5 stars Theodore Taylor could have done better.......2005-05-11

The Weirdo was not one of my favorite books I have ever read. I dont think that Theodore Taylor did an outstanding job on this book, but dont get me wrong because Theodore Taylor has alot of great books and I am a big fan of his. Theodore Taylor did alot of jumping around in time on this book and I got a little confused while I was reading. I would not recomend this book. This is totally my opinion, but someone else that reads this book may like it.

The Weirdo
By: Theodore Taylor
Have you ever met someone who is so weird that you actually gave him the nickname, "The Weirdo"? There is a teenager, Chip Clewt, who lives near the swamp and doesn't come out in public. He has terrible scars on his face from a plane crash when he was young. For these reasons, the people of the town call him "The Weirdo." Samantha, a girl in the town, finds a body in swamp near her home and is positive "The Weirdo" must have killed him. Sam gets lost in the swamp chasing after a dog, and ends up at the Clewt's house. She meets Chip, "The Weirdo", and realizes that he couldn't have killed the man she found in the swamp. If not Chip, then who? Together, they set out to find the killer.
I was enticed from the first scene; I loved it. Theodore Taylor made me feel I was on the hunt with them. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves suspense.

In The Animals Of Grandfather Mountain, wildlife biologist and animal habitat manager Laurie Jakobsen showcases a wonderfully illustrated collection of engaging and informative stories about the boisterous bear cubs, inquisitive deer, secretive cougars, playful otters, chattering eagles, and others who live in the Grandfather Mountain wildlife habitats of North Carolina. The Animals Of Grandfather Mountain is wonderful reading for children of all ages and an enthusiastically recommended addition to school and community library wildlife reference collections and reading lists.

This is a wonderful book for the young and the young at heart who are interested in animals and love to laugh and learn.

5 out of 5 stars Book Brings Wild Animals to Life.......2001-12-01

Reading "The Animals of Grandfather Mountain" was great fun from start to finish. I laughed out loud at some of Jakobsen's stories about day to day life running a wild animal habitat. Everyone, young and old, enjoys watching our furry friends while strolling through zoos. But this book shows you the behind-the-scenes work that makes such experiences possible. But perhaps the biggest treat the books gives readers is insight into the great personalities these animals have. The photographs make the book even more fun. I recommend this book to children and anyone who loves animals, whether they have visited Grandfather Mountain or not.

The Okefenokee Swamp is probably best known, outside of the Deep South, as that place with a funny name where Pogo Possum and his cartoon cohorts lived. Local wildlife aficionados, however, will tell you that 438,000 acres of the swamp are protected as a federal wildlife refuge, within which alligators, bobcats, black bears, and snapping turtles thrive. The Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge is one of more than three dozen such reserves in the southeastern United States (a region that, for the purposes of this book, includes the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico), most of them open to the public. Author Doris Gove, a zoologist and naturalist, provides useful information on each of them in this guidebook, which suggests driving and hiking tours, points out characteristic flora and fauna, and tells of the history of these often pristine habitats. --Gregory McNamee

The Blue Ridge Mountains run 500 miles from Pennsylvania to Georgia and take in some of the eastern United States' wildest country, including seven national parks and many state parks and wilderness areas. The mountain chain also embraces, environmental journalist Steve Nash writes, 29 species of snakes, 70 species of mammals, more than 200 species of birds, 70 species of fish, 1400 species of flowering plants, and more than 130 species of trees--almost as many as can be found in all of Europe. The richness is astonishing, but also, Nash writes, seemingly unappreciated, for the Blue Ridge is now under threat from industrial, commercial, and residential development, with acid rain and other hazards affecting its many ecosystems. Guiding his readers through many scenarios on how these environmental problems might best be lessened, Nash points out that conflicting scientific data lends an "illusion of precision" to the idea, on one hand, that nature will automatically right itself or, on the other hand, that catastrophic change is irreversible. Neither case, he suggests, is strictly true, and he invites his readers to participate in the business of developing a vision for the Blue Ridge's sustainable future. Residents of the region and students of regional planning alike will find Nash's book to be of much interest. --Gregory McNamee

        Book Description

The mountain chain known as the Blue Ridge traces a 550-mile arc through Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Georgia. Along the way, it encompasses Shenandoah National Park, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway, seven national forests, numerous federal wilderness areas and state parks, and parts of the Appalachian Trail. It is the largest concentration of public lands east of the Mississippi and home to an astonishing diversity of plant and animal life. But as the most extensive natural area in the increasingly populous Southeast, the Blue Ridge ecosystem faces unique challenges in the next decades.

Drawing on scientific research in a variety of disciplines, journalist Steve Nash provides a clear and evenhanded introduction to some of the most hotly disputed environmental issues facing the Blue Ridge, including the invasion of exotic plants and insects, the explosive growth of suburban-style communities in natural areas, worsening air and water pollution, and the erratic management of national forests. Informative and highly readable, Blue Ridge 2020 takes a hard look at what is at risk in these mountains and what we—as the "owners" of the public lands—must do if we intend to preserve their future.

        5 out of 5 stars A most important owner's manual.......2000-11-14

Just the title provides food for thought: Blue Ridge 2020, An Owner's Manual, reminds us that the public has a responsibility for effective stewardship of the public lands in the Blue Ridge. I also like the play on words of 2020--hindsight is 20/20, and if we don't take a hard, clear look at what is happening to the ecology of the Blue Ridge and work hard to improve it, we will have deep regrets by the year 2020. The human scale of twenty years is very effective. I'm 31--what kind of Blue Ridge will I experience at 51? As a local environmental activist in the Page Valley, I find this book is a tremendously useful and motivating resource. In one book, Steve Nash provides an overview of specific problems and practical solutions. His writing style is clear and accessible. If you care about the health about the Blue Ridge or want up to date information about the quality of air and water in the mountains, this is a book you need to read. This is one of the best "state of the ecology" books I've read, and it is particularly useful for its regional approach.
