Book Description
Between the weather, geology, geographic location, entomology, native plant life, and fisheries management policies have combined to create daunting obstacles for the Great Smoky Mountain fly-angler. In this book, Ian Rutter unlocks the secrets of this gorgeous region, including: trout streams, game fish, fishing methods, fishing seasons, catching larger trout, trout flies, and more. Some of the streams are closed to fishing for the study and preservation of brook trout populations, but those that are open to fishing are described individually, including fish species, productive flies and techniques, stream features, access, easy-to-read icons, and more. If you are fortunate enough to fish this beautiful, historical area of America, this handbook will be your perfect guide.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource for the GSMNP.......2007-03-11
Ian did a great job of presenting the information on the park and identifying great placed to fish for trout. A highly recommended reading.
The Bible for GSMNP Anglers..........2006-03-16
A tribute to concise writing, Ian's book imparts exactly the amount of information needed to plan and fish the Smokies. I'm a dedicated fly fisher from Northern California who travels to Tennessee each Spring, and while there are other guide books describing the park, Ian's is the best at capturing the flavor of each stream and river.
What shines through all the information is Rutter's obvious love for these streams, rivers, and typically smallish trout. Indeed, he's widely regarded as a leading expert on the Brook Trout of the park, and even helps the scientific teams gather data about the range and recovery of the native Brook trout.
Adding a love of fly fishing to that level of knowledge - and wrapping it up in a direct, friendly writing style - and you've got a winner. Thumbs up.
A great guide book by a really nice guy.......2003-10-26
Up front I have to say that I have had the author guide me on three separate occasions. On one of those trips, he taught my wife how to fly fish in the Smokies and she caught some nice trout on dry flies. So he doesn't just write about fishing - he really fishes. If you are looking for a guide book that will tell you precisely where to fish and gives away all the prime spots; this isn't it. The author tells you where the streams are and how to get to them. He tells the equipment you need and some techniques. If you already know a little bit about trout fishing this is a perfect guide book. It has enough information but it isn't a kiss-and-tell book. Having read the other available books on the GSMNP, I can say this is the best of it's kind. If you want to really get the inside scoop hire Ian as a guide for a few days. He is a great guy and this is a great book!

More than the trail.......2000-10-29
You don't have to just hike the Appalacian trail if you visit the Smokey Mountain National Park....and this book proves it. Packed with information about the parks and it's trails and non-trail hiking, it's a good book to pack for that vacation you are taking to the area. For day hikes, overnight hikes, or thru hikes of the area, this is a good resource.

Good ole Davey.......2006-08-03
This was a chapter book for my [...] grandson. We read a chapter each night and it kept him interested and curious about davey's life for weeks... It was a fun book and really sparked his imagination.

Remember The Alamo
Davy Crockett Aileen Wells Parks
The book Davy Crockett is about one of the most famous men in the history of America. It tells about how he became a great hunter with Daniel Boone. One of my favorite parts is where he defended the Alamoe for his country. The book is great if I had a choice from 1to 10 I wold give it a flat 10 all because of its description and its pictures. This is the kind of book that I would conceders to people that love to learn about history.
The author is Aileen Wells Parks. If you ask me I think she writes good books for all ages. I think she should write more and more books for men, women, and children. I encourage her to write more.
The date this book was published was 1986.
A brief discription is when he goes to hunt for his first time he dosen't bring anything home. But the next week when he goes to hunt he finds a new friend named Danile Boone.
"Bar" Hunter to Hero!.......2000-10-10
As a kid, Davy wanted to be just like Daniel Boone. He hunted the wilderness, protected people from indians, and even joined the government. Soon, he fought in the Alamo, and became a Texan HERO!
Book Description
The Fly-Fishing guide to the Great Smoky Mountains does more than any other book in print to bring success to a fishing trip. This landmark volume is an essential guide for anyone planning to fish the rivers, streams, and lakes in the Smokies - these fisheries are some of the greatest in the nation. For successful fly-fishing, this guide is as important as the right tackle. The fist half of this guide offers advice and history. The second half examines each of the thirteen watersheds found within the park. Don Kirk provides information about trail access, fishing pressure and quality, species, fly hatch information, and campsite availability.
Customer Reviews:
Nothing but raves.......2002-12-15
An earlier review stated that this book was too old. I did not find that to be the case. Mr. Kirk's understanding of the lay of the land still applies and helped me immensely. As many people know who fish regularly and often, streams and rivers change and rechange. The book tells about enough places that any fisherman could find fun, enjoyment and plenty of fish. The book was enjoyable to read, not stale or boring. His style is easy going and he gives you the confidence to take off on an adventure to the Smokeys or to any place a fisherman would enjoy fly fishing. I recommend it for the novice or expert fly fisherman!! I have read it and I have bought copies for my sons. Enjoy!!
Book is out of Date.......2001-06-13
Much of the information in the book is out-of-date. Especially info about the rivers in the Great Smokies National Park. According to 2 different flyshops in the Cherokee NC area, those rivers have not been stocked for 20 years since the federal hatchery on Bradley Fork was closed.
From a sports cartoonist in Mississippi.......2000-02-19
Don Kirk is a master outdoors writer. He has covered the Smokey Mountains better than anyone alive. This is probably the best guide on fishing this area. On the previous comment about "not paying contributors." Don contracted me to cartoon and illustrate for BowMasters...I was ALWAYS paid promptly!
Reply to Reader in Kentucky.......1999-03-08
Don Kirk has not been the editor for Bowmasters magazine for almost 2 years now, if you want to make derogatory statements you might wish to learn all the facts before you speak. Anyway the Book is outstanding as with anything Don Kirk writes and cant wait till the next revision of this Book which I and many others consider the bible for Trout Fishing in the Smokey Mountains
My encounter with Don Kirk.......1999-02-10
Just a word of advice to anyone thinking of submitting an article to Bowmaster's magazine, where Don Kirk serves as editor...Don't!
Don will do anything he can to keep from paying his contributors. Do yourself a favor and send your articles elsewhere.

Book Description
The ecosystems within Great Smoky Mountain National Park--from old growth forests to balds--support a wide variety of birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, mammals, and plants. This new addition to the "Visitor's Companion" series describes and illustrates in full color dozens of these plant and animal species. It also explores the park's geology, climate, and history--at once a traveler's guide, field guide, and natural history of one of America's most popular national parks.
Customer Reviews:
Weak illustrations cast doubt on book.......2003-07-07
I'm a biologist who has spent a fair amount of time in western NC. I know something of wildlife and the Smokies, and I buy books like this to learn more. I also judge the usefulness of guidebooks by how closely they fit with what already know. I only recently bought the Visitor's Companion, and it looked quite worthwhile. However, as I was doing an initial skimming of the volume, I noticed the illustrations were not at fine as I first thought. Many of the animals looked a little chunky, and the trees were a bit squat and artificial. The Box Turtle's plastron just didn't look right. But when I reached the deer. . . I know deer, and no whitetail has a rack like the one pictured on p. 198. It looked like a touch of mule deer, elk and possibly some Asian species all fused together. What it reminds me of is an illustration from a 16th century beastiary or on a heraldic emblem -- drawn with heavy artistic license. I guess I expected the photo-realistic quality of a Peterson guide rather than a drawn-from-memory sketch. Had I noticed this earlier, the book would have hit the shelf instead of the counter. As it is, I am looking over the drawings of salamanders and songbirds with a more critical eye, and will be more likely to doublecheck the facts in the text.

Dog-eared to the max.......2002-12-18
Simply the most enjoyable hiking book on Middle Tennessee one can buy. It is informative, with plenty of maps and photos, and the text is conversational, something you'll want to read again and again as you plan your trips or reminisce on trails already covered. I've done about 100 miles of the trails in this book and have yet to be disappointed. Virgin Falls, South Cumberland, Radnor Lake, Cedars Of Lebanon, Cardwell Mountain...other books cover more concentrated natural areas of Tennessee with more depth, but not as much charm. If you live in Middle Tennessee or are planning a visit, this book is the perfect starting point. Thanks, Mr. Brandt!
"Must Have" trail guide for hiking in Middle Tennessee.......1998-04-14
Robert Brandt's book is a "Must Have" for anyone who enjoys hiking the trails in Middle Tennessee. In addition to an accurate, vivid description of the trails and the hiking conditions, Mr. Brandt also includes a very informative history lesson of the area as well as discussing it's geology, botany and wildlife. "Middle Tennessee On Foot" now accompanies my wife & I when we lace on the boots and strike out on a new hiking adventure. Thank you, Mr. Brandt.
