5 out of 5 stars Best Sleep I've had in years.......2006-06-13

I have had difficulty sleeping for about two years. I have used this CD for 10 days now and I have had wonderful sleep for each one of them. I listened to it for three nights straight. I didn't need it the fourth night. One night I did wake up and I used it to go back to sleep. I wish I had tried hypnosis sooner.

I do understand that some people might be distracted by his voice and the echo sound effects of his voice. It did not bother me. If you need help sleeping it is really worth a try. I do use headphones (earbud type) and tell myself as he is starting that I will take them out of my ears the first time I roll over. That suggestion had worked for me. Good luck.

3 out of 5 stars It could have had 5 stars.......2005-09-30

There are two kinds of insomnia. The first is the one everyone knows about, which is trouble falling sleep. The second kind of insomnia is trouble staying asleep. This means waking in the night or waking up early.

If you have chronic insomnia you should look into treating the causes of it instead of just covering it up with medication or hypnosis. The book "Say Goodnight To Insomnia" which is also available on amazon.com was written by a Harvard psychologist, is backed up by the most established scientific research, is very effective and it is holistic. In addition to getting you to sleep it will also make you healthier and happier.

This CD deals very well with the first type of insomnia. It will put you to sleep. However, it is very weak on the second type of insomnia.

I used it several times after having a two week period where I could only sleep about 2 hours a night. The CD would get me into a deep sleep, but then I would awaken with a jolt of tension a few hours later.

I recently tried it again after several weeks of sleeping close to normal ( thanks to the afforemention book ) and slept through the night.

Glen Harrold is a very talented hypnotist. I could hear his suggestions in my mind even after not listening to his CD for several days.

Based on the powerful effects I felt from this CD I would try his other CDs.

Be warned, this tape has a second tract that deals with productive dreaming, that will automatically play if you keep your CD player running.

5 out of 5 stars I didn't think it was possible!!.......2005-08-29

I read reviews but don't ever write them BUT I just had to write one on this cd to give hope to people who have insomnia.

My therapist recommend this cd because some of her other clients raved about it.
I didn't have much hope as I tried other sleep cds and they didn't help my constant lack of sleepiness due to extreme stress and worrying. I bought this cd and not expecting anything but to waste my money (hey after all it's a cd, what can a cd do?) And I tell you this thing is a miracle and I can't stop talking about it. I feel more relaxed and am able to have a comfortable, relaxing, deep sleep. I used to wake up with headaches EVERY SINGLE MORING FOR YEARS and with the help of this cd I am having restful nights and no longer suffering form the headaches that used to plague me from lack of sleep.

I love his voice/accent and I am definitely going to try some of his other cds!!

5 out of 5 stars well worth a try.......2005-08-03

I have not gotten to the second part of the cd yet - I fall asleep too soon!!

Outstanding recording quality. Effective, clear, energetic voice. Helped clear the day's chaos and nervous energy from my mind.

An audio hypnosis sleep cd. seems like a frivolous use of money ... It goes against common sense.

But it is way worth it. In fact, if it works as well for you as it did for me, it is a cheap long term investment!

Personally, I am all about trying *any* alternative to pharmacological intervention to stress-related conditions like insomnia. This CD offers a good supplement.

I am not a doctor, but I am a patient. Recordings like this help turn self-destructive mental patterns around. If you suffer from anxiety and stress that keep you up at night, this is a great help. If you sleep better, consequently daily struggles seem a whole lot more managable.

I hope it works for you.

5 out of 5 stars Very effective.......2004-05-29

I have a small collection of relaxation/sleep tapes and CDs and this one is probably my favorite. I agree with one reviewer about the speaker's English accent, but one very quickly habituates to the accent and actually, it becomes very pleasant and part of the whole relaxing experience. This CD helps me get to deep very readily, as promised. Very good!

3 out of 5 stars "Face of an angel, heart of a demon".......2007-07-27

I'd had vague recognition of the name Chet Baker until a trip to Amsterdam a year ago. Across from our hotel--now owned by a major chain--stood a plaque noting that Baker had died on that spot in 1988. I soon learned that in 1988, that area was among the worst of Europe's Skid Rows and that Baker had fallen from the window above to his death.

This book, if you can get through it all without being completely disgusted, is not at all flattering to the man. He recorded hundreds of records, very few any good due to his drug addictions and abhorrent version of a work ethic. But boy, when he was good, he was awesome. Often dismissed as a pale white version of Miles Davis, he attracted admirers of both sexes with his boyish looks and sad songs that, at his best, seemed to flow effortlessly from his trumpet.

Still, the book goes on too long, hence the three stars. We learn, with increasing incredulity, what a despicable person Baker was--absentee father, abusive husband and lover (often at the same time), thief, burglar, arsonist, rapist, forger, drug smuggler, literal pusher (he injected at least one person with heroin against her will). And those were with his friends! About the only thing he didn't do was murder (although he did secretly dispose of a shooting buddy who OD'd on him, dumping it in an alley). And, of course, there were the drugs; taking more than 200 crushed-up pills a day, the only place he didn't inject himself was his eyeball. To add to this incredible list of sordid behaviors, he vehemently refused over and over again to get tested for AIDS, despite his penchant for needle-sharing in the most unseemly of communities.

By the time of Baker's death in 1988, he is so pathetic one ALMOST feels sorry for him. Toothless, gaunt and ever cruel to everyone who ever reached out to him, even his fans looked for foul play as the reason behind the death of the otherwise indestructible Chet Baker. Only a concrete post crushing his head seemed to finish the job he'd started so many years before. (The contrast between Baker on the front and back cover photographs illustrates the toll on his physical appearance, never mind the rest of him.)

I have since borrowed a copy of In Paris: Barclay Sessions 1955-1956, which is a lovely album from sessions recorded in a relatively sober period in the mid-1950s. Still, the ugliness of the artist precludes full enjoyment of the album. In the end, it's just sad.

4 out of 5 stars Valentine.......2007-07-07

Having just finished "Deep in a Dream" I want to mention a few thoughts.
As a read, it has a tension throughout. Odd for a biography when the ending is known at the outset. I believe it's created by the high level of research and the writer's editing choices of that level of detail.
I chose the book because of my having seen Chet Baker. Once.
It was 1966. There is a picture in the book from that appearance.
Having seen perhaps many hundred's of performances by many different jazz artists that one was the real deal. As a musical-human performance. The reputation of jazz is that it is all about improvising. That is seldom the case in my listening life. Only a small percentage have it and use it. Chet Baker is one of those rare ones.
The song has haunted me ever since. As " My Funny Valentine " has stayed with so many other folk. The conflict's in the book are tough to read.
The seeming lack of redemption for Chet's life...........It's rough but a worthwhile read. I do think Mr. Gavin must of been glad to be done with the project. I hope he worked on something a bit lighter afterward.

3 out of 5 stars Be prepared to be radically disillusioned........2005-08-15

Just a glance at the front and back covers tells you quite a bit about Chet Baker. On the front he's an almost singularly good-looking young man, the equal of Hollywood actors of the day. On the back he looks like a corpse that's neglected to lie down and stop moving. Jazz, travel, pain, and heroin. That's Chet Baker's biography. He was a right bastard and if someone did push him they probably had a pretty good reason, played one hell of a gorgeous trumpet though.

1 out of 5 stars Hatred........2005-05-31

I'm curious why someone who apparently thinks Chet Baker is a no-talent hack, would go to all the trouble of writing a biography of him?

After stating early on that Baker's horn playing was just a pale imitation of others, his voice was weak, etc. Mr. Gavin contradicts himself based on other peoples reviews of later performances.

It's really got nothing to do with Chet's music here anyways, it's just a book demonizing him as a person pretty much.

While it's interesting to see the life Chet led, the book over all just seems like an attack on a man who isn't even around to defend himself.

If the idea was just to make a buck off a dead celebrity, James Gavin would have done well to choose a celebrity that more people are interested in.

If there's a reason for Mr. Gavin's apparent vendetta against Chet Baker, that story might make for more interesting reading.

Synopisis: Chet Baker was a junkie and he hurt a lot of people.
That's about all you're going to learn here, and I said it in a sentence. Mr. Gavin tells us over and over and needs 448 pages to do so.

The companion CD 'Deep in a Dream' pretty well disproves James Gavin's critiques of Baker's talent, and gives a far more important picture of Chet Baker as a truly gifted and important artist.

Skip the book, get the CD.

Book Description

The twelve billion dollar cruise-ship industry caters to 10 million Americans annually on six- hundred million dollar floating cities.

In this terrifically entertaining history, Kristoffer A. Garin chronicles the cruise-ship industry, from its rise in the early sixties, to its explosion in the seventies with the hit show The Love Boat, to the current vicious consolidation wars and brazen tax dodges. Entrepreneurial genius and bare-knuckle capitalism mate with cultural kitsch as the cruise lines dodge U.S. tax, labor, and environmental laws to make unimaginable profits while bringing the world a new form of leisure.

A colorful and compelling behind-the-scenes narrative, Devils on the Deep Blue Sea is a definitive look at the industry and its robber barons who created floating empires.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Perspective on the Cruise Business.......2007-09-17

I found this book to be a very enjoyable read. It takes you beyond the marketing collateral of the cruise lines to the full story behind the industry's birth and development. The book is a wonderful narrative of the industry's short and eventful life. The author is fairly even handed in his treatment but there are times when you can sense when he likes or dislikes his subjects.

The author's assessment of the cruise line labor policies, environmental record and negotiation with Caribbean Governments was slanted. His view comes off as wanting the cruise lines to be vehicles of social change rather than commercial enterprises. I think he fairly criticizes the cruise lines for not living up to their environmental rhetoric but if the labor conditions are so bad onboard the ships, why are the positions so prized? If the Caribbean Governments are being abused so badly in their deals with the cruise lines, why do they continue to build larger piers to accomodate more ships?

The best parts of this book deal with the business deals that created the cruise industry and the characters that were involved. I have cruised for years and reading this book gave me a better perspective on the strategies and coincidences that shaped the industry. A good read!

4 out of 5 stars Great fun!.......2007-05-27

Travel agents and veteran cruisers alike will get a big kick out of this book.

It's a behind the scenes look that pulls no punches but manages to remain affectionate. Garin simply proves that you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs. I certainly hope it doesn't discourage any non-cruisers from taking the plunge.

My favorite bit: Carnival's Meshulam Zonis' line, "A passenger is like a wet towel," which he illustrated by hand motions that wordlessly said, "First we squeeze them this way, then we squeeze them that way."

5 out of 5 stars War ships/tankers to cruise ships....Oh My!!!.......2007-04-25

In the first chapter, Garin writes of the last day on a cruise ship which any cruiser knows is every man, woman and child for themselves....no longer are passengers royalty but more like refugees! He captures the irony of the debarking day that has always made my family chuckle as we tell stories of things we see on that last day! E.g. one poor passenger's luggage broke open outside an elevator...not one steward or other crew member offered assistance....they walked right over his strewn belongings. Anyway, Garin knows cruises and gives a wonderful history of the makings/history of the cruise industry from its humble beginnings to the big business it is today (and the two major cruise lines left). I was particularly fascinated with the evolution of the ships themselves! This was an easy read (and if a portion got dry....I skimmed!). I am cruising in 17 days...will do so with even more appreciation for the experience!

5 out of 5 stars If your cruise reservation is non-refundable...don't read this book.......2007-02-06

I picked this up after enjoying his Harper's article "On the great Ukrainian bride hunt". His writing style and my interest in critical looks at the evolution and externalities of specific industries (a la Fast Food Nation) made this an amusing & informative read. And the long odds that I'd ever go on a cruise got even longer.

4 out of 5 stars An even treatment with a fascinating storyline..........2006-09-03

Being a vacationer who has been on numerous cruises, this book recommendation looked like a certain fit... Devils On The Deep Blue Sea by Kristoffer A. Garin. He does a very good job in revealing how the cruise industry works, and the forces that have shaped it along the way.

The story starts in the late 1950's, when the cruise industry was really nothing more than a way to transport passengers from one location to another. The rich often had a lavish experience, while the "steerage" passengers were cramped and confined to the lower decks with restrictions on where they could go and what they could do. But in both cases, it was still a case of traveling from point A to point B. The airline industry quickly made cruise ships obsolete for rapid travel, and the shipping lines were becoming a footnote in history. But a few people thought that cruising could become a destination in itself, a way to vacation, see other lands, and then return to where you started. But the appeal had to be broad, and the luxuries of first class had to extend to all the passengers. Thru visionaries, financial risks, and mergers, what we have today is a $13 billion dollar industry that is truly global in numerous aspects. But behind the glitter and glamour, there are some less appealing items of interest...

Garin talks about how the cruise industry is largely staffed by impoverished workers from third-world nations who sign on for low base wages and whatever tips come from passengers. To many of us, these base wages wouldn't even support poverty, but they are considerable in the countries where the workers come from. The hours and rules aboard ship are harsh, with 12 to 16 hour days with little time off the norm. The industry also pays little in the way of taxes due to their ship registration being out of country to take advantage of international treaties preventing retaliatory fees. The laws and rights of the United States are not always in play either, as the ship is actually foreign territory. And if that's not enough, many of the tourist destinations are unable to get additional fees from the industry to support their infrastructure, as the industry will threaten to pull out of the port and destroy their tourism. It can be capitalism at its worst...

Personally, this book was better than I expected. I thought it was going to be a muck-raking, "boycott cruises" diatribe, and one that I wouldn't necessarily agree with. But the balance between the story of the cruise lines and the less-savory parts of the industry was just about right. And even the "expose" part wasn't hypercritical. I came away understanding the abuses, but (in many cases) understanding both sides of the issues. And really, it's not much different than what most other industries would do in the same circumstances...

Yes, I'm still going to go on cruises, and I'll still enjoy them. But I'll be even more considerate of the staff that makes it all work, and more in awe of what it takes to pull off the experience, week after week after week...

Book Description

With a strong emphasis on personal transformation as essential to therapy, Deep Journeys explores how experiential therapy can supplement analytic and interpretative therapies. Kenneth Kelzer shows how therapists, using a trance induction process, can work with clients' dreams and personal archetypes to help them understand and heal the causes of their emotional symptoms.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Taking the Journey via the book works just great.......2002-11-04

I totally enjoyed the book, learned a lot from it and was looking forward to taking Mr. Kelzer's class. I'd stick with the book in the future -- the books explains the process of combining dreams, trance and affirmation into a workable process for really any kind of therapeutic issue -- not just deep trauma, crisis or repression. While in the book Mr. Kelzer states it is doable with either groups or individuals in the class he states 'oh no, it MUST be in a group' and, of course, he offers training in how to do the process in a group. The book explains it just fine. While in person Mr. Kelzer says to "go with the client" I noticed in the class that if something did not fit with his own personal paradigm he changed the issue to his and did not "go with the client." Additionally even after being told "I have your number I will call you if I wish anything further" he still called again.

The method seems clearly usable by both mainstream and "new age" type therapists -- by "new age" I mean people who are willing to look at what exists beyond our 3 dimensional world and non-traditional religion. There are a growing number of people dealing with spiritual crisis that I can see the method being used very well with -- and the book does a great job explaining this. HOWEVER, the therapist needs to be open to dealing with those spiritual issues where the client really is and not from within their own little box.

5 out of 5 stars Asleep in minutes.......2007-08-05

This has worked wonderfully for me, even if I only listen for a few minutes (I can't fall asleep with earphones in) I find I have no problems getting to sleep quickly. Very highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars No Deep Sleeping Here.......2007-03-29

I was really hopeful that listening to this CD (through my MP3 player) would help me fall asleep, stay asleep, and have deep, restful sleep. I actually feel a bit more "keyed up" after listening to it. I've tried it on about four different occasions and am hesitant to give any more energy to it. I've gone back to an old CD of just plain ocean sounds--no music overlays. It works better for me.

4 out of 5 stars A fascinating tale of adventure, culture and suspense!.......2004-01-30

Harry Winsdor is a 15 year old boy living with his uncle in Kuching (a seaport on the Sarawak River). His uncle takes him on an expedition into the rain forest, that's when the adventure begins: an ambush, a mysterious guide, dangerous wild animals and a kidnapping plague Harry and his party along this epic expedition. Then at the climax, cultures clash when Harry meets Bayang and Duckfoot, two natives of an Iban tribe on a dream quest to make Bayang the leader of the tribe.
I liked this book because it helped me get an insight into the culture of a Southeast Asian tribe while still providing a significant source of excitement. I recommend this book for any reader who relishes an adventure that makes you think.

5 out of 5 stars Very good.......1999-09-20

This book was great! It was so descriptive and realistic-I learned a lot about the rainforest just from reading it. I'd definitely recommend it to everyone who wants to read an incredible book.

        Book Description

This is a story about brothers dreaming about starting a hunting club, working together to build it, and watching their dream become a reality. It is about an old Army barracks being transformed into a beautiful cabin in the scenic mountains of Western Maryland near Deep Creek Lake. And it is about some of the people who were involved in the construction of this cabin and some who were not fortunate enough to see it completed. This is also a story about the friendships that have been forged through the years, hunting and working and laughing together in the cabin that we share. Our friendships can be motivational, and our stories will make you laugh and cry. We believe in our dreams and ourselves. We believe that dreams become reality when you work hard enough. And we believe that those dreams become a legacy for future generations. We hope our children and grandchildren will continue the traditions.
