Book Description

Since the foundation of the Au Lac kingdom three centuries ago - famous for their bronze drums and their magnificent artilleries - until the works of the painters from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts of Indochina, created in Hanoi in 1925, the arts of Vietnam have been marked by its profoundly original cultures and the fusion between Asia and the Occident. The modern Vietnamese civilization has therefore inherited a very rich and multifaceted history.

Long forgotten during the civil unrest of the late 20th century, the Vietnamese arts have remained largely unrecognized. Recent years however have seen art culture begin to blossom again and new discoveries are being made. In this book, the authors have chosen to present these findings in a historical perspective, situating them in the heart of a twice-millennial tradition.

A particular work has been realized on the iconography, associating views of some remarkable landscapes - many in the country that shelters the Ha Long Bay - the negatives of a Vietnamese photographer, scenes of the life in the countryside, and pictures of civilian and religious monuments. The art objects have been chosen among the ones preserved not only in the Vietnamese museums but also in the European museums and private collections.

5 out of 5 stars A Reminder of Beauty Past, A Notice of Beauty Present.......2005-08-23

ART OF VIETNAM may not be the definitive survey of this country's rich artistic heritage one might find in the archives of Eastern or Asian Art in Museums or Universities, but it is one of the most keenly written brief overviews of the hundreds of years of important creations from all the varied areas within Vietnam. It also happens to make excellent references to the many 'occupations' of the country and the influences of those cultures (Western and Eastern) on the art that is Vietnamese.

Art historian and author Catherine Noppe and specialist in Asian arts Jean-François Hubert have compiled an easily digestible summary of Vietnam's history, linking that history with the changes in credos and styles that blanket Vietnam's artistic past. From religious relics to examples of two-dimensional and three-dimensional art, each work illustrated (in fine chronological order) is well chosen and presented in color-true fashion. Even works of art currently being made by contemporary artists are included - some superb, some merely interesting.

For those whose curiosity about Vietnam only increases with time since our flattening of that country some years back, this is a solid introduction to the rich cultural heritage that is Vietnam's. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, August 05

The book covers most of the landscaping issues with easy to understand planting guides. A very good book for planning all or a part of your yard.

5 out of 5 stars Great Idea Book and Reference for Southeast Landscaping.......2002-02-15

I found this book in the library and after renewing it 3 times figured I'd better just buy it. I've checked out many garden plan books, but this one had the info I needed to plan for different seasons, how the plans would look in a few years, and what I needed to maintain the plants. It's specific to the Southeast so I don't waste time on plants that won't work for me. It's a great idea source and reference.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! Clear instructions with great diagrams........1999-03-23

This book is an excellent guide for the new or veteran homeowner. It's filled with lots of ideas and a variety of plants including trees, shrubs, perennials, groundcovers and a few annuals. It offers a samples of typical planting scenarios for the home landscaper. Identifying each design as good for sun or shade and showing the variations is one of the best features. Seasonal variations are also helpful. But the best feature is that it clearly diagrams the placement of each plant including distance from the structure and distance from each other. Drawings and actual photographs of plants are also helpful. I highly recommend this book for the new or renovating landscaper.

5 out of 5 stars Love this book!!.......2007-09-11

I have so many landscaping books that I never opened again after the first week I bought them. This is not one of those books. It's by far so much better than most of the other ones out there. It's well organized for info, and the plans are numerous and easy to follow. Not just for beginners. a really great book!

It's great the way these books are customized for each individual climate area here in the U.S. Saves a lot of wasted planning with the wrong plants and materials.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2006-05-19

I recently became interested in gardening (now that I have a yard in which I can plant). This is one of my favorite books on gardening and landscaping. Great resource for those of us living in the northeast. Full of wonderful photos, explanations and illustrations. It gives many ideas for addressing certain areas of your yard (i.e. front entryway, patio, rock wall). Explanations are excellent; I learned a great deal from this book. Very well written. Highly recommended.

A neighbor showed me her copy and I had to get one for myself. Great layouts, great plant selections, this book offers great ideas and variations and is FULL of information! I showed another neighbor the garden I am planning and now I'm buying her a copy as well. We are going to have a GREAT looking street!!

Do I prune my hydrangea in the fall or do I wait until early spring?
When is it safe to put out tomatoes?
Can I divide iris now?

If you have ever asked yourself questions like these, Month-by-Month Gardening in Georgia is for you. Gardening is a journey, not a destination. The day-by-day gardening experiences - planting a few onion sets in the first warm afternoon of spring… the surprises - a purple crocus before the snow has even gone … the satisfaction - fresh green beans on the dinner table, or tomatoes, bright and red, safely in quart jars … these are the things that keep the gardener coming back year after year.

Month-by-Month Gardening in Georgia is packed with information that explains what needs to be done and when it needs to be done in the Georgia garden. Topics include:

Whatever your gardening interests or the time of year, you can take the guesswork and mystery out of gardening. You will become a more satisfied gardener … and your garden will show it!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Pretty informative garden book........2007-05-15

I wouldn't buy a garden book again with out color pictures. Altho I've been a gardner for many years, I would
still consider myself just above a beginner, and I need the color photos! Makes for a much more exciting book too. Information was good and an interesting way of presenting: ie catagorized by type of plant material, ground covers, trees, flowering bushes, etc.; and then by month/season.... this was very informative! Also included important information on dangerous insects, etc. that one should watch for!

1 out of 5 stars Confusing.......2007-03-13

We got this book as a gift. The first fatal flaw is the lack of real or even illistrated color pictures. A few pages in one finds a table listing annuals that grow in most parts of Georgia. Wait a minute. How do we know if we live in in one of these parts where they grow. The month by month layout appears to be just a gimmic that made it east to write the book.

Your local nursery is a better resource.

4 out of 5 stars Great Reminder.......2007-01-03

This book contains excellent basic information about when to take care of the various plants in the yard. A great book for reminders about lawn care, when to prune what and other general tips for your Southern yard.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2004-12-15

Fantastic book, particularly for new gardeners or home owners. It breaks down plants into categories (annuals, bulbs, trees, houseplants, etc) then gives you monthly direction on caring for the plants. The back contains some appendixes which recommend varieties and pesticides.

If you're interested in vegetable gardening, combine this book with Georgia Fruit and Vegetable Book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference.......2003-03-24

This book was loaned to me by a long-time gardener at church who said it was the best out there and now I have my own copy becuase I kept going to her house to look up something. I love the way it seperates chores by month and area of garden.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Useful information, useless organization!.......2006-03-18

Honestly, I'd love to give this book more than 2 stars, because it so clearly covers material needed by gardeners in our area (especially beginning to intermediate gardeners like me). Having lived on the West Coast, where the Sunset Western Garden Book is the definitive gardener's bible, I looked high and low for an analog here in the South.

This is not it.

Don't get me wrong: this book has some good information and what's there is written in a highly readable, friendly voice.

But it is not a reference book, and it will not answer every gardening question you may have. And it may even leave you with some new questions after you try to make sense of some of the overly simple descriptions. And maybe that's OK, because it's not billed as that kind of a reference guide.

What is IS billed as, though, is a month-by-month guide to working in the garden. And it's here that it actually fails the most.

Organized into sections by different types of plants (bulbs, shrubs, trees, etc), this book is then further organized within each of those sections by month... ALPHABETICALLY! If that's not the craziest thing you've ever heard, just try to imagine actually using this book to try to understand what you need to do this weekend. You would need to flip through each section for each type of plant in your garden, and then flip around the counterintuitive listing (since when does April come before February, which comes before January?) to find the appropriate month. Lather, rinse, and repeat for each type of plant in your garden.

Why the author and publisher of this book didn't realize it would have made immeasurably more sense to group all the information together for each month and sort those months in CALENDAR order, I have no idea. But I'm here to tell you, it ain't worth it. Stick with the Southern Living Garden Book and you'll be a lot less frustrated.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2006-02-18

Excellent advice for all times of the year, even in the winter months, when you might be wondering how to make yourself useful. There are chapters in all the areas involved: trees, shrubs, lawns, bulbs, etc. And of course it is specific to our area.

5 out of 5 stars Month by Month Winner Book.......2005-09-25

This book lives up to its title. I have been gardening for years and learned quite a few new tricks. The book has editions for all parts of the country so buy the right book.
TennesseeGardener.....

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful guide.......2004-05-05

I am enjoying using this book. Since I previously lived in another state with a different climate, I'm not always sure of the right time to do things in the yard -- plant tomoatoes, prune roses, pinch back perennials. This book puts that information at my fingertips. I also like the extensive general information about each type of plant -- from shrubs, trees and vegetables to bulbs and houseplants -- and what really matters with their care. I've learned a lot reading this guide and like the same author's Tennessee Gardener's Guide, too.

3 out of 5 stars month my month gardening.......2004-04-14

Book seems confusing and busy because it is broken down into too many sections. The book has 11 plant categories broken down into 12 monthly sections which total 132 sections. I would prefer to just identify the month and find all the plant categories covered in that month's section. The book requires too much flipping back and forth. It would also be great to have a section on disease detection and control for each month of the year.

CJKV Information Processing covers all major writing systems for Vietnamese (including Quôc ngu, chu Nôm and chu Han), Japanese (kana and kanji), Korean (hangul and hanja), and Chinese (hanzi), plus the various means of integrating multiple character sets and systems for transliterating these languages into the Latin alphabet. Author Ken Lunde explains what's involved in taking input in the various languages and goes into great detail about output, including some detailed coverage of professional-quality computer typesetting with Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese (CJKV) characters.

But CJKV Information Processing doesn't restrict itself to input and output issues. There's extensive coverage of the special issues that arise when you attempt to work with multibyte characters inside programs--especially Java programs, since that language is especially adroit at internationalization tasks. You'll find ready-to-use algorithms for detecting and converting characters among the various sets.

Almost half of the book is consumed by exhaustive character tables listing every CJKV character set ever defined by a standards body, software vendor, or other organization. Comprehensive is the operative word here--Lunde even gives space to 145 hanzi characters defined by Hong Kong's Department of the Judiciary. You'll find a full suite of keyboard mapping tables, too. With the same thoroughness and clarity that made his Understanding Japanese Information Processing such a hit among members of the Pacific Rim crowd, Ken Lunde provides an unparalleled guide to computing with the CJKV character sets. --David Wall

Book Description

CJKV Information Processing is the definitive guide for tackling the difficult issues faced when dealing with complex Asian languages -- Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese -- in the context of computing or Internet services. Unlike the English alphabet with a mere 26 letters, these complex writing systems use multiple alphabets comprising thousands of characters. Handling such an unwieldy amount of data is formidable and complex. Until now, working with these writing systems was an unattainable task to most, but this book clarifies the issues, even to those who don't understand East Asian languages. This new book contains revised information from Ken Lunde's first book, Understanding Japanese Information Processing, and supplements each chapter with meticulous details about how the Chinese (hanzi), Japanese (kana and kanji), Korean (hangul and hanja), and Vietnamese (Quoc ngu, chu Nom, and chu Han) writing systems have been implemented on contemporary computer systems. This book is unique in that it does not simply rattle off information that can be found in other sources, but rather it provides the reader with hitherto unexplained insights into how these complex writing systems have been adapted for use on computers, and provides the user and developer alike with useful and time-saving tips and techniques. Information on today's hot topics, such as how these writing systems impact contemporary Internet resources like the Web, HTML, XML, Java, and Adobe Acrobat, is also provided. This book is of incalculable value for the developer, programmer, user, and researcher -- anyone who comes into contact with these characters in the context of computers or the Internet needs this book. Topics covered in this book include: This volume also contains a host of valuable appendixes, such as code conversion tables, character set tables, character set indexes, mapping tables, Perl code examples, a glossary, and a detailed bibliography.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Buy this if you write international software - it's that simple.......2005-06-30

From this book I learnt (about 3 years ago) to add support for Japanese, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional) and Korean to a number of top-selling PC Games (plus support utils). The tables within it *are* useful, despite what other reviews have said, as a way of testing your onscreen output. I also found the author to be very helpful when I emailed him with the odd query , and he was encouraging when I shared my findings on Thai (not covered by this book, but principles learnt from it enabled me to work it out) with him. One of the best reference books I've got.

3 out of 5 stars Chinese edition of this book.......2004-06-06

Why amazon.com do not provide order for the Chinese version of "CJKV Information Processing"? I think it's more useful for Pan-Chinese customers.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic but too big.......2002-08-01

I agree with all the postive comments posted here. Working in Japan, this book has saved me repeatedly.

But I have a serious concern about the size, of 1000 pages there are 400 pages of tables, huge lists of Chinese characters which are of very little value and makes the book difficult to use.

5 out of 5 stars The bible for coding Asian languages.......2001-12-29

Lunde's book is essential to anyone in the software localization or internationalization business. It simply covers everything. Want to know how to do regular expressions in Japanese? Page 445. The actual definition of "Mincho" (as in the Mincho font)? Check the Glossary. Postscript clones that handle Chinese? page 391.

The book is intended primarily for software engineers, but the subject matter is treated so comprehensively that it is an essential desk reference for translators, information developers, project managers, production managers, and marketing executives.

Just get it, Ok?

2 out of 5 stars Code page tables poorly organized.......2001-11-28

I recognize that this book is really definitive on this topic. So I cannot help but assume that if I had the patience to figure out how to use it properly it would be worthwhile. BUT...

Being somebody already reasonably familiar with using eastern languages on a computer, I have no desire to read the text in the book from the beginning. The majority of the book is code-page tables, which is an important reference. (They are actually of limited utility, since they are only indexed one way: code to character, with no reverse indexing. Understandable, since that would be very difficult, but still limiting.)

But worst of all, the code page tables are laid out in a way that I do not understand. And I could not find an explanation of how these tables corresponded to byte-values in a data stream.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Must for NC gardeners.......2001-10-29

For anyone who is interested in gardning in NC, this book is a must. Most gardinging books would only concentrate on how good the plant is. BUt this book also tells us some of the "problems" one might have with the plants and what kind of pests/diseases a plant might be susceptible to. I should have given 5-Stars for this book. The reason I did not give is the indexing is a bit confusing -- the botanical and common names are used in mixed mode. This is not a big problem though, once you get used to the book.

Again, this book is a must for all gardeners in NC -- experience as well as novices.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for North Carolina gardeners.......1997-11-12

This book has been very helpful for me in choosing, planting and understanding how to take care of annuals, perennials, groundcovers, shrubs, trees, bulbs, vines and herbs that will grow well in North Carolina. The choices at a gardening center can be overwhelming, but Tony Bost's advice can help you focus on plantings that have a good chance to succeed in a N.C. garden. I especially like the great detail that goes into the exact way to plant your selection, and the maintenance of the plant, so that you know how often and with what to fertilize the plant, and how to water and prune it. Tony Bost has also included up to date information on new cultivars that are being developed and relies a lot on excellent research that is currently being done at the Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh.

Book Description

Besides serving as host to PBS program Victory Garden, Jim Wilson has been honored with several prestigious awards.  They include election to the Garden Writers' Association of America's Hall of Fame, Garden Communicator of the Year by the American Nursery Association, and Life Member of the National Council of State Garden Clubs in 1996.  Jim features 175 of the plants that are best suited for the state's hot, humid climate, including annuals, bulbs, corms, tubers, rhizomes, groundcovers, hardy perennials, vines, roses, shrubs, trees, turfgrass, and wildflowers.  The South Carolina Gardener's Guide shares with readers a survey of South Carolina gardening from the fist European plant explorers to the blooming botanical gardens following World War II, to today's very sophisticated and multi-variety organic gardens.  Gardeners of the Palmetto State will appreciate information about plant habits, design uses in the landscape, planting instructions, and maintenance advice.

4 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to South Carolina Gardening.......2000-07-05

During the landscaping of our new home, I used this book continually to get a concise review of the plants I was finding at the nursery and that our landscape designer recommended. However, I found that for long-term care we needed a more detailed reference.

Book Description

Readers have the opportunity to enter the world of college football and follow one player through his experiences on the gridiron of the Southeastern Conference for the Auburn Tigers. A Tiger's Walk observes him as he battles the highs and lows of championship and losing seasons, coaching hirings and firings, and personal success and tragedy. Born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, the self-proclaimed "football capital of the South," Rob Pate grew up well aware of the significance of college football in his home state. At the age of five he embarked on a journey in football that carried him from a proud youth league ballpark in small-town Alabama to the splendor of SEC football, as well as to the National Football League. Readers can gain an understanding of daily life in college football and what today's game is genuinely like, not from the perspective of someone who never touched the gridiron a day in his life, but rather from someone who recently stepped off the field for the very last time. Pate talk about facing some of the issues that have been buried for too long by college football's big business bureaucracies. This is one Tiger's walk in the world of today's student athlete, helping fans watch from the sidelines and become one of the team.
