Now it's up to Harriet to save her foolish friend from Mr. Johnson's fricassee potand there are chases galore, hairsbreadth escapes, clever disguises, and lots more tomfoolery before she does. Good for a giggle........2003-09-22
This book entertains, points out the importance of reading, and makes you laugh out loud.
What a great push for reading!.......2000-06-23
An excellent book for teaching the importance of reading and gaining an awareness of simlarities in plot. Poor Winnie learns that she may the next 'stuffed chicken for dinner' as a result of not wanting to read a famous tale. The story takes the reader on a rollercoaster of 'what-ifs' and creates wonderful moments for predicting text. I will be using this story for numerous lessons in my classroom, from developing a sense of story to partner predictions. Excellent illustrations, too!

Book Description
While on vacation, George and the man with the yellow hat stop to see Mt. Rushmore. There's no time to take a helicopter ride for a close-up view - the hot air balloon races are about to start! Whisked up and away at the races, a surprised George gets a close-up view of the presidents after all. The adventures of Curious George continue in an all-new series beginning in fall 1998 with eight new stories. Written and illustrated in the style of Margret and H. A. Rey, the books will appear in paperback (8 x 8") and hardcover editions and will feature the art of Vipah Interactive, the animators of HMI's Curious George CD-ROMs.
Customer Reviews:
One of Katy's favorites.......2002-03-24
My 3 year old daughter Katy loves the Curious George books. She particularly like this one and wants to read it almost every night. As an aside, the book has taught Katy about the presidents on Mt. Rushmore and she wants to go to South Dakota to see them!
Curious George Strikes Again.......2000-06-23
Curious George and the Hot Air Balloon is another charming example of the magic Margret and H.A. Rey weave. Children will find this book enchanting. They will identify with George's curiousity, which causes trouble, and cheer when he saves the day. I enjoyed the delightful pictures. I also appreciated the simple, straighforward language and easy-to-follow story development. Fans of Curious George will love this story; those unfamiliar with his books will become fans.

A Baboona, a balloon-a, a Loon-a and a jazzy Raccoon-a.......2007-02-19
This is a marvelous, silly read-aloud about a baboon-a named Altoona who gets bored on her dune-a and goes for a hot air balloon-a ride. It was one of the first books that our daughter started asking for over and over (and over) again (the very first book she did that with was Chris Raschka's Charlie Parker Played Bee Bop). The text is brief and the rhyme is accomplished mostly by adding "-a" to the end of various words, but the pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations are lovely and since babies and toddlers love rhyme, it really works for little ones. We have a special place in our hearts for the "jazzy Racoon-a" (who plays a saxophone like Charlie Parker and thus allows us to at least alternate between two books the eighth or tenth time she hands Altoona Baboona to us). The sequel, Altoona Up North, is somewhat longer and has a more traditional rhyme scheme, but is not as popular at our house. That may change as our 16-month-old gets older.
We love Altoona!.......2006-12-29
Altoona is the best! We first took Altoona out from the library and our son loved it so much we had to buy one! The rhymes are easy and cute, and the story is very sweet.
*~*~Altoona will make you swoon-a*~*~.......2003-02-27
Lovable Altoona has been a favorite in our home for years. Now my first grader loves that she can finally read Altoona to herself. She was hooked a long time ago by the first sentence.."Altoona Baboona flicks peas with a spoon-a."
Altoona Baboona is a bored baboon with wanderlust in her heart. She takes off on a high-flying adventure in a hot air balloon and discovers friendship along the way. The art is colorful, engaging and a world of fun - just like the story itself.
There are MUCH better books out there.......2003-02-17
The book was just awful! The reviews made me think it would be a definite hit, but I found it insipid, and my 2-year-old was completely uninterested. If you're going to make up words, you'd better be Dr. Seuss, and this author doesn't come anywhere near. The pictures are nice, though.
Some other books he really enjoys instead: "How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight", "Owl Moon", "Come on Rain", "What Mmms Can't Do", "Make Way for Ducklings", "Where the Wild Things Are".
Altoona Baloona.......2001-08-10
This is a light and fun book that I enjoy reading as much as our three year old enjoys hearing it. As he says....Altoona Baboona sticks in our head long after we read it.

Book Description
The year is 1783. On a cozy French farm, there lives a sheep with an impossible dream: She wants to fly. Mouton's friend Canard the duck is sympathetic, but Cocorico the rooster insists that, without wings, Mouton will never take off. Still, Mouton is full of hope and determination—perhaps just enough to make her impossible dream come true.• Based on the true story of the world's first "passengered" hot-air balloon flight • Features an inventive heroine and a variety of fun-loving farm animals • Embraces the universal theme of following one's dreams and triumphing against all odds
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful fusion of fantacy, science and historical fact.......2003-11-19
This is a delightful book having warm illustrations and a story line merging fantasy (talking animals with soaring dreams)with an actual historical account. I hope this books helps to inspire my little girl to follow her dreams and an appreciation of science and history. To round out the experience and add some hands on fun, I suggest purchase of the 5 foot flying replica of the Montgolfier brothers balloon from the Exploratorium store on line.
Exceptional Children's Book !!!.......2002-01-17
"Mouton's Impossible Dream" is delightful, well-written, beautifully illustrated children's book. The spectacular water color pictures in this book bring the imaginative characters to life in this charming, heart warming story. Not only does it tell this historical story acurately, but it gives it a life of it's own that leaves children asking for it over and over. My 3 children adore this book, and have requested we give it as gifts to several of their friends. Anik McGrory is a refreshing artist that we will look for again and again. Fantastic!!!
Adorable !.......2000-04-21
A truly imaginative work on a real event in history. The animals as drawn by Ms. McGrory are adorable and full of hopes and dreams....much as the rest of us! The little expressions on the faces of the animals are precious!
This has become a real favorite with our family!
Mouton's Impossible Dream by Anik McGrory.......2000-04-13
It seems impossible that "Mouton's Impossible Dream" is Anik McGrory's first children's book! It's wonderful! I love her story, based on an actual event in history, with French words and phrases accenting the action. The very idea that sheep - also - might aspire to fly caught my attention immediately (because we all want to fly)! Ms. McGrory's animal characters may be partially imagined but their imaginations parallel those of all people who continue to reach beyond the known. All children need to be encouraged to dream and do.
The artwork is just so delightful! It is fanciful but at the same time real. The flowing lines and vivid colors enhance the notion of flying and reach upwards, pulling the reader into the sky along with Mouton, Canard and Cocorico.
Were I growing up today, Mouton would replace my old childhood favorite, "The Little Engine That Could."
Altogether a huge success! Congratulations! I cannot wait for a sequel!
Mouton's Impossible Dream.......2000-04-08
Anik McGrory has extraordinary talent. Her first book is an amazing and touching story about dreams, hopes, reality, and life. Her illustrations brought a smile to my face with each turn of the page. Ms. McGrory is sure to have a long and wonderful career writing children's books. Give us more, soon, Anik!

Gold Fever!: Tales from the California Gold Rush
ASIN: 0961735740 |
Book Description
Based on the true story of a teenage boy who, in 1893, was accidentally launched in California's first hot-air balloon. It paints a vivid portrait of everyday life in San Francisco five years after the discovery of gold.
Customer Reviews:
Up, up & away!.......2005-08-29
Rebeccasreads highly recommends THE BALLOON BOY OF SAN FRANCISCO as a lively recreation of the life & times of the golden years of pioneers, as seen through the eyes of a young newspaper boy in search of fame & fortune.
Along the way he meets all sorts of movers & shakers, con artists & real artists, yet nothing tops his death-defying trip aloft which coined him the name of "balloon boy".
Upbeat and Delightful.......2005-04-03
I found this book to be delightful. It is the story of a newsboy named Ready Gates who lived in the year 1853 in the city of San Francisco. Based on a true story, we journey with Ready and his family during the time of the gold rush in California.
Times were hard for most families in San Francisco and so it was for this one as well, but they had a plan. Ready and his father were going to go pan for gold. Ready dreamed of having a life of luxury after they made the big find, but his dream was shattered after his father had an accident and was bedridden. However, Ready had yet another adventure in store for him.
Heartbroken over the loss of his dream, Ready throws himself into trying to sell more papers and become a newspaper writer. He meets some very colorful and entertaining characters that you will enjoy; and opens his heart to a young girl who is desperately seeking her brother, and whom Ready will help her find.
One day, Ready sees an add that the first balloon ascension was about to take place in San Francisco; he had to make sure he was there. As fate would have it, Ready ends up taking the balloon ride and having the adventure of his life.
This is a great book, a short read that is entertaining and insightful. I believe you will enjoy sharing the adventures and life of Ready Gates and his amazing balloon ride.
Very enjoyable read.
A Wonderful Adventure for Readers of All Ages.......2005-03-08
The Balloon Boy of San Francisco is a delightful true story that readers of all ages will enjoy. Ready Gates, a newsboy, and his family moved from Philadelphia to San Francisco to find their fortune in gold during the 1850s.
Ready, a 14 year old red-haired adventurous boy, will take us on many journeys throughout the story. The reader is given a glimpse into history of the California Gold Rush and everyday life in San Francisco in 1853 as in the sinking of the Steamship Independence with 125 people onboard, the characters of the gold rushers and a fortune teller, close call on the steamer, and the Rassette House fire.
Ready decides to go watch the first hot-air balloon ascension in San Francisco. In doing so, his life makes an unexpected turn. Read on to find out how it all ends for The Balloon Boy of San Francisco.
Dorothy Kupcha Leland's research and superb writing has created a beautifully detailed, colorful historical book that is a joy to read. She has also written SALLIE FOX: THE STORY OF A PIONEER GIRL.
The Balloon Boy of San Francisco .......... Molly's Reviews........2005-02-07
Entertaining Read ........ Recommended 4 stars
The Review
The discovery of gold served to prompt San Francisco into becoming a thriving city overflowing with activity and people in addition to the city serving as an important hub with numerous ties to the rest of the nation. Set five years after the discovery of gold The Balloon Boy of San Francisco depicts a vivid peek into every day life in this busy, exhilarative city on the bay. Writer Leland has done her research well to provide details necessary to bring to life the colorful gold rush era in this appealing narrative telling of red haired Ready, Joseph, Gates and the eye-popping, unexpected journey he made as is recorded in early California and other of the nation's newspapers.
As a native Californian who was myself born in the bay area, I particularly enjoyed this fascinating, well-written tale. The Balloon Boy of San Francisco is an excellent choice for pleasure reading, classroom `California' unit work, the homeschool curriculum as well as home and school libraries.
Enjoyed the read, happy to recommend.

What a fun way to learn about San Francisco during gold rush times! With appeal for both children and adults, Balloon Boy would be a great tool for middle school history teachers. This would also be a great gift for boys who need a little extra motivation to read.

Escape to West Berlin
ASIN: 1550378090 |
Book Description
Based on true events from the time of the Berlin Wall.
When King Frack and King Frick divide their kingdom with a tall wall, Tamala and her brother send balloon messages over the wall to their beloved grandmother.
Then Tamala decides her family can reach their grandmother the same way: in a hot-air balloon! The family gathers all the materials they will need: cloth for the balloon, straw for the basket. But where to find a gas burner? With spies everywhere, their work is extremely perilous.
Nevertheless, Mother sews the material, Father weaves the basket, and Tamala and Abalon discover an old gas burner in a junkyard. After many nights of labor, their craft is ready and rises into the air. Guards on the wall spot them and fire their weapons, but the balloon sails safely over.
Happily, they successfully reach their destination, just as two families from East Berlin did in 1979! An endnote ties this story to the dramatic true event.
Key features:
Based on a true escape over the Berlin Wall in 1979
A captivating, page-turning suspense story
Stunning, evocative illustrations
Customer Reviews:
Not so fantastical!.......2004-06-20
This story seemed utterly fantastical to me-then I read that it was based on a true incident! (I know, I know -"Truth is often stranger than fiction.")
King Frick and King Frack have each inherited half the kingdom. They build a great stone wall that slices it in two. No one may cross the wall. Unfortunately it divides families from their relatives-in this story, little Tamala and Abalon and parents from Grandma and cousin Peter. The family sews together a huge balloon, attaching it to a basket outfitted with a gas burner.
One night they take off in their hot-air balloon, and sail over the wall, even while soldiers below attempt to shoot them down. They are reunited with their relatives.
The story is based on the wall constructed in 1961 to divide Berlin in two. In 1979, two East German families sewed a balloon four stories tall and sailed over the wall. (In 1989, the wall came down.)
"The Balloon Sailors" illustrates the bizarre circumstances that ideology and politics can visit upon citizens, and how some use great imagination and perseverance to overcome the barriers imposed upon them.
The heart-felt illustrations evoke folktales of old, depicting simple village folk and stereotypical kings.
