5 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for All Women.......2007-09-20

Women at every stage of life should read "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause", "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Pre-Menopause" and "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer". No one is too young or too old to read them. The late Dr. Lee had nothing to sell except the important information in the books. Of course everyone is an individual; naturally every statement won't apply to one and all, and that is OK. The books obviously are not a substitute for competent medical care; however, you make the best decisions when you have the most information. Incidentally, you may meet some people who have misinterpreted Dr. Lee's books and will say they advise women never use estrogen in any form. He strongly advised against the combination tablets that are made of Premarin with artificial progesterone. These are not bio-identical and have been proven dangerous in highly publicized studies, as Dr. Lee had said beforehand. Dr. Lee's outstanding contribution was in helping us understand the uses and benefits of natural progesterone cream, offering information you may not hear from your doctor ... this natural cream happens to be available over-the-counter. Unlike the synthetic prescribed forms, this cream has the same chemistry as that made by the body. It is derived from plants and is used transdermally for most effective results. It is a wonderful supplement for many women with many benefits but the key is that it stands alone in working to rebuild bone. Bone is automatically lost during the menopausal years and the progesterone was well-proven by Dr. Lee to work by his carefully documented studies over many years. Also excellent are the book "Menopause Without Medicine" by Linda Ojeda and the book "Smart Medicine for Menopause" and any other book by Sandra Cabot, M.D. Here's to good health and competent advice!

5 out of 5 stars a must-have book!.......2007-09-16

I read the precursor to this book a few (OK, more) years ago - What Your Doctor May not Tell You About Premenopause - and it was absolutely wonderful. So I bought this book, and was not disappointed! The information and timely advice has changed the way I feel. Following it has given me new energy and brought my body (and life) back into balance. If you (or someone you love) is at, or preparing for, this stage of life, it's a must-read!

5 out of 5 stars I learned a lot........2007-07-23

Fabulous book that I told my nurse practictioner about. Made sense to me. This book really explained the hormonal changes besides estrogen and causes of many of my symptoms. Worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars Read if you are female (any age) or know someone who is........2007-04-19

As a man who cares deeply about his woman, I have an eye for other men who genuinely care for the well-being of women. That trait is evident in the author of this great book, and is my best reason for recommending it.

1 out of 5 stars Please Be Careful - I Learned The Hard Way.......2007-02-03

Bio-identical hormones are not all they are cracked up to be. They have serious, dangerous impacts on the human body. Please, if you are going to try these, do your homework first. A growing number of women are experiencing lethal side effects. Some don't make it out the other side. I am one of the lucky ones - I survived the blood clots in my legs and two near-fatal, year-long illnesses connected with use of "natural" progesterone. Since that time, I have been contacted by scores of women who have suffered due to use of these hormones. I hope this information will be helpful to someone else, too. Please, safeguard your health - no one else is going to do it for you.

Women considering hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for menopause symptoms and health benefits should read this controversial, provocative book first. "Advertising and research dollars are spent trying to convince women that estrogen will cure everything from heart disease to Alzheimer's," writes John R. Lee, M.D., "but there is scant evidence for any of these claims and reams of evidence that synthetic estrogens are highly toxic and carcinogenic." Lee has studied the research and concludes that estrogen is not the magic bullet for protection against heart disease and osteoporosis, nor does it retard aging. Natural progesterone, instead, puts postmenopausal women's hormones in balance, says Lee. He cites study after study that indicates that natural progesterone, obtained in cream form, delivers what the usual HRT only promises.

"Menopause as a disease has been largely fabricated by physicians and the pharmaceutical industry," says this leader of a "quiet but powerful revolution" regarding HRT. What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause covers the benefits of natural progesterone, the history and politics of the medical and drug establishment, the biochemistry and dynamics of hormones and how they get out of balance, and how to prevent hormone imbalance and stay healthy. Lee empowers you to ask hard questions of your doctor. Highly recommended. --Joan Price

5 out of 5 stars Very Important Reading for Women.......2007-09-18

There is not a woman who should miss reading "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause" and the companion books: "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Pre-Menopause" and "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer". As others have commented here, such books will give you very important, and unique, health information to assist you to make the best decisions for your midlife health. Don't overlook the books written by Sandra Cabot and Linda Ojeda which are excellent also. Each brings something different to the table. I have read about every book on the market on this subject and these five are the best. You may not find every statement made in these books to be necessarily true for yourself, and that is OK. Also, some people have misinterpreted Dr. Lee's books, reading them to advise never taking estrogen in any form and this is not so. I was fortunate enough to be able to speak with him when he gave a lecture in my city a few years ago. He certainly advised against the combination hormone replacement pills so routinely prescribed which contain Premarin and synthetic progesterone. These have now been proven dangerous in highly publicized studies, as Dr. Lee said all along. Using a bioidentical estrogen skin cream and balancing it with natural progesterone cream in specific measured amounts is not the same thing, and may benefit some women. As Dr. Lee explains, the route of administration, the chemical makeup, the amount, and other factors make a difference. Rather than take the opinions of other people as to what Dr. Lee said as truth, read Dr. Lee's books for yourself. He has illuminated the subject of natural progesterone cream and offers information you may not hear from your doctor. This cream has the same chemical composition as that made by your own body but is not subject to patent, does not require a prescription, and is available in health food stores. A key benefit of the progesterone cream is that it stands alone in working to rebuild bone that is rapidly lost during the menopausal years. Dr. Lee explains the full details and his well-documented research on this. Become well-informed and you will make the best decisions for yourself regarding your health.

2 out of 5 stars Hesitant to recommend.......2007-01-23

I have worked in the health food and the medical fields. I have seen the "miracle cure alls" come and go. This book seems to say that using Progesterone is a super cure to all womanly woes. Having had womanly woes, I tried using progesterone for my endometriosis. It was not a cure-all. I'm sure that it helps some women, but be wary of putting all your faith in it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent work - you must read carefully.......2006-01-05

As a professional health specialist I have read extensively about natural progesterone cream and hormones since my diagnosis of breast cancer in 2001 and have been using it since that time instead of the drugs and radiotherapy recommended by my doctors. Dr Lee's work is remarkable but you must read carefully otherwise you will be under misapprehensions like some of these other reviewers who are still making mistakes about the difference between natural progesterone and synthetic progestins! They are molecularly different and natural progesterone does not carry the same side effects or risks that the synthetic ones do! I am the Hormone Health Expert for the CMA and Bio Vitality Limited where we also advocate hormone testing so that you do not supplement if you do not need it! It's really what the doctors should be doing before they give out hormones of any description.

3 out of 5 stars Good advice - but remember everyone is different.......2005-09-21

I was diagnosed with uterine fibroids seven years ago, and through browsing the internet I found out about Dr. Lee and this book. I took his advice, and I must have indeed been progesterone deficient because using the natural progesterone did clear up the fibroids and repair some other problems I was having. Dr. Lee also has other good pieces of advice that most physicians will not talk about in the realm of nutrition and environmental toxins. Especially eye-opening was his discussion of how non-organic meats and milk are full of estrogen due to modern farming methods. In retrospect, he apparently was also right about Premarin, as in the past three years medical trials showed this drug to be so harmful that the test was in fact halted due to its initial findings. Prior to that it was being passed out like candy by physicians to practically all menopausal women. However, I do have an aunt who has been on it for over twenty years, closely monitored, and her quality of life is probably higher because of it. This is because for her, specifically, the drug works without side effects. As for me, as I passed through menopause and continued to take progesterone, it began to cause problems for me. My blood pressure went up, I was constantly hyper, I had palpatations, and my blood sugar went up and down like a roller coaster. I took a saliva test for my hormones, and my progesterone was off the charts. The nutritionist I was working with said to stop the progesterone immediately. She also told me that although natural progesterone is a godsend to many women, there are some, like me, that are very sensitive to the cortisol related to progesterone and have the woes I described. Within three months of quitting the progesterone, everything returned to normal with the exception of my thyroid, which still requires supplementation to this day, three years later. I guess the moral to this story is that there is always something out there - whether it be a pharmaceutical or a natural product- that helps some people. Progesterone is one of those natural products, but please monitor yourself with regular hormonal saliva tests to insure that you personally are in balance. It's just too bad that proponents of natural cures and traditional physicians have to look at each other as enemies and not realize that both have something to add to the quality of life.

Book Description

There are redwoods in California that were ancient by the time Columbus first landed, and pines still alive that germinated around the time humans invented writing. There are Douglas firs as tall as skyscrapers, and a banyan tree in Calcutta as big as a football field.

From the tallest to the smallest, trees inspire wonder in all of us, and in The Tree, Colin Tudge travels around the world—throughout the United States, the Costa Rican rain forest, Panama and Brazil, India, New Zealand, China, and most of Europe—bringing to life stories and facts about the trees around us: how they grow old, how they eat and reproduce, how they talk to one another (and they do), and why they came to exist in the first place. He considers the pitfalls of being tall; the things that trees produce, from nuts and rubber to wood; and even the complicated debt that we as humans owe them.

Tudge takes us to the Amazon in flood, when the water is deep enough to submerge the forest entirely and fish feed on fruit while river dolphins race through the canopy. He explains the “memory” of a tree: how those that have been shaken by wind grow thicker and sturdier, while those attacked by pests grow smaller leaves the following year; and reveals how it is that the same trees found in the United States are also native to China (but not Europe).

From tiny saplings to centuries-old redwoods and desert palms, from the backyards of the American heartland to the rain forests of the Amazon and the bamboo forests, Colin Tudge takes the reader on a journey through history and illuminates our ever-present but often ignored companions. A blend of history, science, philosophy, and environmentalism, The Tree is an engaging and elegant look at the life of the tree and what modern research tells us about their future.

1 out of 5 stars Difficult to Read.......2007-08-09

As a layperson, interested in learning about the biology of the life forms around me, I bought this book with high hopes only to find it essentialy useless and unreadable.I didn't expect a tree ID guide, but this book doesn't tell the story of trees well. It's not a smooth narrative. It's 400 pages full of technical sounding Latin names and totally lacking pictures. In short, it's just not a good basic intro to trees or a good read.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating read.......2007-05-31

I've been sort of collecting books on trees the last few months. Though still an amateur on the subject, this book is a winner from where I sit. An I-can't-put-it-down book that makes me happy I'm only half way through right now.

If you are interested in understanding the flora around you and you aren't already degreed in botany but kinda would like to be, this book is for you!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-05-13

Mr. Tudge is obviously very well educated on trees, but he gets a bit dry and lost in the details from time to time.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you wanted to know about Trees .......2006-10-15

One of the most beloved and memorable of all popular poems is Joyce Kilmer's 'Trees' " I think that I shall never see/ a poem as lovely as a tree'/ A tree whose hungry mouth is prest/ against the earth's sweet flowing breast/.
The sheer wonder, delight, and inspiration 'Trees' give to our poetic nature is only one side of what they are.
In this learned and detailed study of Trees,Colin Tudge tells us more about them than we might ever have wanted to know. He describes the different species, provides a survival guide to the way Trees manage in often challenging environments, considers the special qualities of different kinds of trees, helps us understand how Trees are a benefit not only to the 'natural world' but to human civilization and society.
He does this as he also points out the new dangers facing various species from global- warming. And he has specific recommendations on how we can better create an environment more beneficial to the natural world as a whole.
The book is disappointingly poor in one element most of its readers will certainly want to have, good illustrations of Trees. But it nonetheless is an overall encyclopediac treasure for those for whom one of the natural world's great stars are an ongoing source of interest and attraction.

5 out of 5 stars Arboreal trilogy.......2006-05-11

"I never met a Tudge I didn't like" is a fitting adage for this wide-ranging author. Having written an "unauthorised biography" of life, the impact of agriculture on human development and other works, Tudge has created a masterpiece of science writing. No longer can we claim that we can't "see the woods for the trees" since he has detailed the mechanics of both in exquisite detail. At) least so far as we know now. If nothing else is clear from this book, what we don't know about the mechanisms of trees far exceeds what we've learned. Trees, so ubiquitous in their presence and so meaningful in our lives, remain a great mystery to be solved. In three almost independent segments, he spells out what is known and what needs to be revealed.

He opens with one of the most understated definitions in science writing: "a tree is a big plant with a stick up the middle". From this simplistic opening, he then develops an image of how complex that "stick" and "plant" combination is in the final product. This complexity didn't appear from nowhere - the author explains how evolution built it from simple beginnings. Most readers will be familiar with the fact that 46 chromosome are needed to make a human. Trees, through various mechanisms, may develop hundreds of chromosomes depending on conditions. The structure of a single tree almost pales against the variety of trees growing around our planet. Tall trees, spreading ones, trees that we often call "shrubs" - which are merely superbly adapted to their local environment - all reflect the immense diversity trees have developed over the ages. Although generally divided into but two forms, conifers and "flowering" trees, they comprise thousands of species, many probably still unknown.

Tudge dedicates the second part of his book to descriptions of those variations. It is a catalogue of wonders as he depicts the oaks, beeches and other "common" types along with palms, celery pines and fruit trees. He begins with the ancient conifers, trees with a lineage stretching back nearly three hundred million years. That heritage shows in the varieties the conifers incorporate. From stately pines to humble ground-huggers, the conifers even include a parasitic member among their ranks. Angiosperms, the "flowering" trees, have surpassed the conifers in species number. The author lists each Order, with a list of the families and species. He explains why the numbers of species are in flux as new information about relationships comes to light. Tree habitats are also described with indications of where to find typical specimens.

In last third of the book: "How Trees Live", Tudge demonstrates why he's one of today's leading science writers. He has accumlated a vast repetoire of information, and presents it with almost passionate style. Seemingly static from our viewpoint, trees have much to do in the course of their lives. They must keep the sun in view, and many forests are competitive arenas to lift leaves into the light. There are seasons to keep track of, predators to discourage and to entice and employ helpers in the process of reproduction. Lacking brains, or other "intelligent" means, trees cannot manufacture devices for these needs. All must be accomplished with chemistry. Much of "the secret life of trees" is hidden here. With but five hormones and a handful of pigments to achieve their tasks, they have built up forms and methods to accomplish it all with an astounding degree of success.

Tudge's adulation of trees goes beyond being simply informative. In his conclusion, he both endorses our need to increase our knowledge of trees and warns of the effects of our failure to do so. We may view trees as aesthetically pleasing or as a source of lumber or paper. Either way, we must deal with them properly. Hewing down vast forests does far more than leave a barren landscape. Trees are the source of the oxygen we breathe. They take up the carbon dioxide our society produces in such imposing quantities. Their capacity for that role has likely been exceeded at this point. Trees matter, he argues, and we need to know why and how. This book is an excellent starting point to find the answers to that learning quest. [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]

Book Description

The ultimate inside story: how bureaucracy, politics, and a disregard of science combined to cripple—perhaps forever—a great American city

As deputy director of the Louisiana State University Hurricane Center, Ivor van Heerden had for years been warning state and local officials about New OrleansÂ's vulnerability to flooding. But like CassandraÂ's, his predictions were ignored—until Hurricane Katrina hit on August 29, 2005. Suddenly, van Heerden found himself at the center of a media maelstrom. Stepping forward to challenge the official version of events, he revealed the truth about the cityÂ's shoddy levee construction.

Now, in The Storm, van Heerden shares up-to-the-minute reporting from his investigations and connects the dots among the Army Corps of Engineers, the bureaucrats, the politicians, and the chain of events—both natural and human—that culminated in catastrophe. An epic of cutting- edge science and systemic bureaucratic failure, The Storm is the first book from a major player in the Katrina disaster and a riveting narrative that brings expertise, passion, and a human viewpoint to AmericaÂ's greatest natural disaster.

3 out of 5 stars The Storm.......2007-05-14

Good description of what happened during Katrina and the causes of it. However, it is a first person narrative with a bit of self-congratulation embedded throughout (which is kind of annoying).

5 out of 5 stars Read This, and worry about your town..........2007-01-09

I am a New Orleanian. I was there, I know the details, and I know this writer has a lot to teach about disasters and personal responsibility to the community. He's a good guy who a lot of politicians tried to gag.
The book does a lot of CYA- people who knew what they were doing during Katrina have taken a lot of bludgeoning from fools. Mostly fools in politics and the Corps of Engineers- who caused the whole damn New Orleans disaster through sheer idiocy.
Rad this book and weep, for us, for yourselves. Where ever you live, there's the same incompetance waiting to fail you.

5 out of 5 stars Worth The Time.......2006-11-15

Let me first start by explaining that Ivor Van Heerden is my step father, and Mike Bryan is my good friend. During the months in which this book was written, my family was not only dealing with the aftermath of Katrina, but the effects of someone with such huge ideas and opinions trying to fit them into a few hundred pages. The amount of time and dedication that went into this book alone was enough to encourage me to read it, but once i did i realized that it's positively genius. The detailes he goes into just to make sure the readers can understand what he is about to discuss definitly sets him apart from other katrina authors. And Mike Bryan's years of writing experience really bring eveything together in this book. All in all I have to say that this book is definitly worth your time, if you want to understand the big picture behind katrina, as well as the things not many people knew at the time.

3 out of 5 stars Eye-Opening .......2006-08-04

Get your dictionary out for acronyms... very confusing at times. Great storytelling in the first half of the book, but much finger pointing at the end. Van Heerden is very passionate about his work and point of view. Story matches reality I guess in relation to this catastrophic, horrible event. Very eye-opening, as our government continues down the same road, levee's ...FEMA... wars..... cover-up after cover-up.... Etc...

5 out of 5 stars The Sad Truth.......2006-07-14

As a former emergency management planner, I found this book to be an excellent analysis of what really went wrong in New Orleans. It is a treatise for government officials to learn what not to do and an outline of what we as citizens should demand from our government leaders. It presents very technical information and scientific analysis in a manner that even an elected official can understand. But, beyond presenting the scientific basis of why New Orleans flooded, it presents an outline of solutions that should and must be considered. It is an great testament to the fact that some issues should be above everyday politics and that some important decisions that a government may be asked to make should be based upon science and not political considerations. This is a must read for every citizen and should be a mandatory read for every elected official.

Book Description

In Horses Don’t Lie, Chris Irwin, one of the most successful horse whisperers in North America, shows us that horses have much to teach us about ourselves when we strive to understand their behavior. Based on more than twenty years of working with, training, and observing horses, Irwin explains why trust and honesty are essential elements in building relationships with horses, and why the sensitivity and awareness that characterize a horse’s perception of the world are qualities we can use to enrich our own lives. “A horse knows what you know,” Irwin reminds us, and in Horses Don’t Lie his message is clear: Horses have a great deal to teach us about how to communicate with empathy and patience—not only with them, but also with each other.

5 out of 5 stars Good Insight.......2007-05-29

This book presented good insight into the horse/human bond and the understanding that can occur between the two. It was helpful especially in the presentation of the point of view of the horse as a prey animal. The author is particularly aware of this viewpoint as he deals with horses and is able to make it clear to the reader. He is amazed, as we are when we read his accounts, of the unusual trust that the horse has in humans, since we are predators. I found that this point of view stuck with me as I worked with my horses after I read the book. I found myself more aware and grateful to my horses for their trust.

4 out of 5 stars Learning More!.......2007-04-26

A friend and fellow horse lover loaned me this book. I found that as I read it I learned more about my equine partners. Being a trainer, horsemanship instructor for people and certified in equine assisted psychotherapy, I am always trying to learn more about horses, people and the interactions between them. I found this book helpful especially in understanding some of the confidence and fear issues that my clients have when it comes to working with their horses. It is not always easy to empathize with them when you have never experienced these same issues. This book gave me a deeper perspective and awareness when it comes to working with both horses and their owners.

I think every new horse owner should read this book before they buy a horse, because there is a lot more to horse ownership than getting the horse to do things physically so that you can ride them. There are plenty of books about the physical and mechanical aspects of training, however many leave out the mental and emotional stablility of the horse and rider. This book is a nice bridge to fill that gap, because it helps us understand how the horse thinks, and why he does what he does.

Thank you Chris for sharing your experiences and insight about the psychology of horses and how they can make us more aware of our own issues. I have quoted from this book in the equine psychology classes that I teach my students.

4 out of 5 stars This an interesting read.......2005-01-31

I recieved this book as a gift and I didn't know what to expect. When I finally got around to reading it, I found it very interesting. I think it's important to know that it's not really a hands-on or practical book.

5 out of 5 stars Easy read, interesting.......2004-09-24

While I'll agree that the book is not full of technical issues, it is an excellent book well worth your time in reading. I read both this one and "Horses never lie" and have found both to be excellent. Not only does it offer a heartwarming viewpoint, it also offers ideas and causes you to look a little deeper into your relationship with your horse. Great read!

Fans of Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle's Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? and Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? will be delighted to see another title in this lilting call and response series. Much like their earlier picture books, Panda Bear features a string of fine feathered (and furry and scaly) friends watching over each other. In this book, however, all the animals are endangered, from a swinging spider monkey to a strutting macaroni penguin (kids will get a kick out of that name!) to a splashing sea lion. Carle's trademark tissue paper collages will be as familiar--and welcome--as the text ("Whooping Crane, Whooping Crane, what do you see?" "I see a black panther strolling by me."); young readers will quickly get the hang of the rhythm and join right in. The book concludes on a hopeful note, with a dreaming child seeing the ten f! eatured animals "all wild and free--/ that's what I see!" Martin includes a note on endangered species that may spark concern and interest in older readers--our hope for these disappearing creatures. (Ages 3 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

Thirty-five years after their first groundbreaking collaboration, the creators of Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? and Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? reunite to address the important topic of animal conservation. A Bald Eagle soars, a Spider Monkey swings, a Macaroni Penguin struts, and a Red Wolf sneaks through Bill Martin Jr's rhythmic text and Eric Carle's vibrant images, and all are watched over by our best hope for the future-a dreaming child.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting new spin on Brown Bear, Brown Bear.......2007-10-03

This book follows the same pattern as the classic Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? but with an exciting new spin -- exotic, endangered animals. It also has a delightful surprise ending that makes it perfect for a bedtime story.

-Sherry North, author, Because You Are My Baby

3 out of 5 stars Sorta Weird.......2007-09-11

My 2-year old twins like this book because they like to see the animals, but I think they'd get more out of it if more mainstream animals were used. I think they're a little thrown by animals like "macaroni penguin" - sounds like food to them. The dreaming child part is weird looking too.

I think it's great to use endangered animals, although my kids aren't exactly as concerned about animal endangerment as I am. It's not a bad book or anything, but honestly, if I had read it in a bookstore, I wouldn't have bought it.

5 out of 5 stars There is hope!.......2007-08-19

My son loves Eric Carle books, and this is our most recent addition to his collection. I just caught on to the fact that all of the animals are endangered, but I think it's so cool that one of them isn't anymore! The bald eagle was recently taken off the endangered species list. I think that gives us (and especially kids) hope that more of those animals can come off that list, and maybe even in their lifetime.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone should have this book.......2007-06-16

In a world of highways, malls, highrises, greed and land excavation, it's good to find a book that dares to dream of thick forests, lush jungles and untouched oceans where wonderful creatures can thrive. This is my favorite of all the "bear" books. It's statement is strong and I can't wait until my 16 month old daughter can recognize it.

2 out of 5 stars I should like this one, but..........2007-03-07

I oughta like it, I want to like it, but it just left me flat. More to the point, it left my kids flat. The two stars I gave this were for the illustrations -- they are really cool, as you'd expect with Eric Carle. Normally, you can't go wrong with Bill Martin, but I guess everybody has their bad days. The language doesn't flow as well as the other bear books, and that makes it a little awkward for reading aloud. We have Brown Bear, Brown Bear and Polar Bear, Polar Bear, and both are big favorites with the under-3 set around our house. Panda Bear just doesn't make the grade.

5 out of 5 stars A further education.......2007-01-11

About six months ago I was told that I had osteopenia and almost went into a panic. This book educated me on the possible ways that this condition could be reversed before more bone loss could occur. The book was clear and concise in discussing natural approaches, nutrition and scientific studies and how to apply them in everyday life to obtain possitive results.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful book.......2006-11-13

Even though this book was published in 1994 and thus doesn't include some of the latest research on osteoporosis, I found it incredibly helpful in understanding this disease as well as other health issues I face. Because it addresses other health issues, it helped me to understand how one problem may impact bone health, though it may not necessarily be the direct cause of osteoporosis. I was particularly impressed with the section on food allergies and want to try to implement his elimination diet in some way. I have long suspected that I have some other food allergies and wonder if they might be a contributing factor to the osteoporosis? Since I am also hypothyroid I appreciated his discussion of this issue, also the constant references to absorption and resorption.

It is one of the few health books I have read from cover to cover in the last few months. There is a lot of information in the book. I did occasionally find some of the explanations a bit technical for me, but it showed me that the writer has a good understanding of the topics he discusses, and I am sure they are helpful to other readers. I certainly would not let that stop me from highly recommending this book. I also appreciated his discussion of the medical profession's resistance to alternative healing.

1 out of 5 stars Out of Date and Not Evidence Based.......2006-10-17

This book was published in 1995 (so of course was written in about 1993-94) so its information is very out of date. Since that time technology has introduced the BMD bone density scan, and the pharmaceutical industry has developed and promoted the use of bisphosphonates such as Fosamax and Evista. These two developments alone have rendered this book totally out of date and therefore not useful, in my opinion. Also, the information is not evidence-based, most of his recommendations are based on anecdotal and observed results, rather than on scientific studies. What he has to say is interesting, sometimes even fascinating, but is it accurate? For example, his recommendations on caffeine are based on the result of an "experiment" of giving three cups of coffee to five women. I don't consider that evidence-based medical protocol.

A vastly better source of information is The Myth of Osteoporosis, by Gillian Sanson, published in 2003. Her book is exhaustively researched, she cites medical and research studies involving hundreds and thousands of subjects, she covers the newest technologies and medications. The only thing missing from her book (because it was published a few years ago) is the very latest information about the potential dangers of Fosamax and the class-action lawsuits about the death of bone in the jaw that has caused people to have their jaws removed. She provides excellent suggestions for improving bone health, including exercise, dietary changes, supplements, and other ways to beat osteoporosis. She doesn't say that osteoporosis is a myth, she just debunks some of the myths surrounding this condition. I highly recommend this book over the Gaby book.

5 out of 5 stars A treasure.......2005-09-04

This book is excellent and has surpassed my expectations of information, not only on osteoporosis, but many other aspects of health care. In fact, I am so pleased with it that I have bought a total of 4 copies, 3 being for my children. Two of them are in health care, and the third will also benefit immensely from the knowledge this book provides. Thank you, Dr. Gaby, for writing this book and sharing your knowledge and research with those of us with osteoporosis, and those who can head off its devastating effects.

3 out of 5 stars old copyright but good basics.......2005-09-03

This was copyrighted in the early 1990s and there has been a lot of new information about bone density/HRT since that time. It does have thorough, clearly written information about a nutritional approach to preserving bone density.

One of the better "Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 1" series. Although I hate to recommend a book that doesn't really show you what's inside when it advertises "Search Inside."

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for elementary science teachers.......2007-04-05

This book is excellent at explaining and illustrating what is alive. It uses simple language and examples to let young children understand what things are living or non living. The information is age appropriate for elementary school children, but can be modified for younger children.

5 out of 5 stars A primary teacher's "must have" book.......2006-11-10

I am an elementary school librarian and this book addresses one of the basic questions asked by Kinders and First Graders. I bought two for the library and our primary teachers are now ordering their own. Can't lose on this one.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful.......2006-09-24

Living things eat, drink, sleep and grow - a simple explanation with examples that will appeal to most small children (e.g. cats, dogs, birds). Living things also die, and this is touched upon very briefly. I am always looking for books to assist me in homeschooling my 5 yr old son, and it's difficult to find educational books that don't bore or beat a topic into the ground. This was a satisfying choice.
