Customer Reviews:
Good organization, poor mathematics.......1999-08-02
This book is better organized than most other texts in this field. The selection of topics is generally good. Coverage of many topics is quite satisfactory. Ion exchange and membrane processes, however, are not explained well.
While descriptive subjects (e.g.microbiology, diseases, etc) and those subjects that do not require advanced mathematics are well explained, there are some serious blunders in the coverage of more mathematical topics.
For example, the author employs mathematical language and notation in trying to "prove" or "derive" certain equations in Chapter 10 (pp. 255 to 261). The mathematics used, however, is sloppy and therefore the presentation is more confusing than convincing. The analysis covering Equations 10.37 to 10.40 shows that the author does not have an understanding of the substantial (material) derivative of fluid mechanics and transport phenomona.
There are some serious mistakes in the treatment of fixed bed adsorber systems (pp.490-498). For example, equations 15.51 and 15.65 are incorrect. There is also a mistake in Equation 15.57. There are other more fundamental mistakes. The author seems confused here. I advise readers to consult Weber or Benefield et al. to study this subject.
Despite the above criticism, this book's treatment of many topics is more comprehensive and satisfactory than that of many a textbook in this field. It is a valuable and wellcome addition to the textbook literature. In preparing the second edition, however, the author should have the chapter on mass balances and reaction kinetics completely rewritten (possibly by someone from the chemical engineering faculty).

Very practical book of reference and good basic theory.......1998-08-17
A very easy to consult reference book. In most cases in water and wastewater engineering, the book will help you to give you the right direction in solving an engineering problem. As a basic book very good in use.
Easy to understand without neglecting theory.......1998-04-09
Droste provides a very good overview with good description of the theoretical background. I find this book most helpful for more unusual problems in (water and) wastewater treatment. Very good value: covers almost everything you need to know in one book.

Book Description
Five years ago Dr. J. Matthew Sleeth and his family lived in a big house, had two luxury cars, loads of money, and lots of stuff. As chief of the medical staff at a large hospital, Sleeth was living the American dream--until he realized that something was terribly wrong. As he saw patient after patient suffering from cancer, asthma, and other chronic diseases, he began to understand that the Earth and its inhabitants were in trouble. Feeling helpless, he turned to his faith for guidance. He discovered how the timeless lessons of personal responsibility, simplicity, and stewardship taught in the Bible could be applied to modern life. The Sleeths have since sold their big home and given away more than half of what they once owned. In Serve God, Save the Planet, Sleeth shares the joy of adopting a less materialistic lifestyle, and reveals what was easy and what was hard about the changes his family has made. Drawing on science and religion, Sleeth builds a bridge between environmentalists and mainstream Christians. He and his family are harbingers of the creation care movement, which calls on all those who love God to love our planet. Sleeth shares how material downscaling led his family to healthier lifestyles, stronger relationships, and richer spiritual lives. Serve God, Save the Planet is more than a book: it is a prescription for taking personal responsibility for global survival.
Customer Reviews:
Great stories and great ideas.......2007-09-10
I bought this book after hearing Sleeth speak (via the web) at Mars Hill Bible Church in Michigan. I just finished the book and I really enjoyed it. Many of the topics that Sleeth covers have been on my mind lately but he definitely gave me some new ones to consider (ie. pets--yikes!). My plan is to go through his suggested action items (back of the book) and highlight the ones we've accomplished and make a list of new ones to tackle. I am sold on this concept; however, my family isn't quite there yet.
I have recently begun volunteering at a Christian agency that helps the underresourced. In doing so, I have become acutely aware of American (and my own) consumerism. So many things have only been used once or not at all and then they come to us. One day the fire marshall almost shut us down because we had mountains of donations. It is great that people are generous but wouldn't it would be better if they'd not bought so much stuff in the first place, only to donate it and buy new and different stuff?
I'm sure I will loan this book to tons of people in an effort to do my part to "Save the Planet." I'm fairly sure that it'll be around for me, I'm just worried about my kids and grandkids!
amazing.......2007-09-03
I'd recommend this book to everyone. We live in a world that has become so focused on consumption and production that we forget that we really don't need all this stuff. This book is written by a former doctor who has transformed his life (as well as his family's) into one that is very simple, yet incredibly peaceful, and wonderfully dedicated to God's glory.
We often associate environmentalism and "nature-loving" with hippies... but why not associate it with God? After all, He created it.
An Amish life for me?.......2007-08-16
I enjoyed Mr. Mathew Sleeth's book immensely and there was much I took issue with. It is indeed disappointing to see such an earnest effort fall short. He speaks with authority on many subjects but has credibility with but a few. Mostly I do not find fault with his interpretation of scripture. It is in other areas that his knowledge is thin, non-existent or worse yet takes, as authority, information from others that is unsubstantiated. A significant percentage of the "facts" presented are implied to be common knowledge when in actuality they are, unfortunately, little more than a recitation of the pandering that comes from mass media. Mr. Sleeth skates past the documented benefits of the industrial revolution with an ease that is disturbing. Where Mr. Sleeth encourages us to live _personally_ greener lives is where his arguments are strongest. I for one am not interested in de-evolving to an "Amish" lifestyle. Surely he cannot believe that our God wants us to life a life that is restricted to the technology of the 17th century. I suspect that the world's _current_ population could not be fed if much of the western world's population adopted it anyway. I must ask the question, "Do you suppose God would bless the act of feeding starving children in Africa any less, IF the vegetables were grown organically versus the most current high production methods?" Read this book with a jaundiced / discerning eye. This is truly a case where the wheat must be sorted from the chaff. Not only did God give me two hands, he also gave me a brain. Now if you'll excuse me, I see that there are three more ripe tomatoes in the garden and we're having beans for dinner.
Great Christian stewardship outline.......2007-07-20
This book succinctly highlights our duty as children of God to care for each other and His creation. By making both small and large sacrifices, we can impove our contentment while saving the planet for the enjoyment of future generations. Thank you, Dr. Sleeth for providing a quickly readable, yet thought provoking call to action which should be used in church discussion groups nationwide.
Strays from his area of expertise.......2007-07-18
After three chapters, I said to my wife -- this is GREAT. Indeed, the first five chapters are a well-structured synopsis of the environmental concerns we are facing, and a wake-up call to Christians to participate in restorative work. From there, the book degenerates quickly.
The rest of the book is simply filler to make a profitable book -- a discussion of issues on the fringe of environmental concern. Consumerism is a relevant issue, for example, but unnecessary is an at-length comparison of Jesus and Santa Claus. Sleeth ventures far from his area of expertise, including some extremely shaky exegesis at times. There is an analysis of Revelation that is especially unfounded. Also disappointing is his lack of practical advice -- this is relegated to a few redundant references (lightbulbs, clotheslines, etc) and a few sparse appendices at the back of the book.
Sleeth could have published this book as a much smaller edition, including his first five chapters and an extended discussion on practical approaches to helping the environment. Seems like a lot of wasted paper and energy for a book that does not seem to contribute much, if anything, new to the environmental movement. Overall, I was very disappointed and honestly, more frustrated when finished than any book I've read for quite some time.
Book Description
Introducing a revolutionary new approach to detail design in landscape architecture
In this groundbreaking book, Niall Kirkwood of the Harvard Graduate School of Design takes a fresh, holistic approach to the theories, approaches, and practices of landscape detail. With the support of a wealth of graphic and written material taken from historic and contemporary landscape designwork, he clearly demonstrates the role that landscape detail plays in the design process. Going beyond theoretical considerations, Professor Kirkwood outlines landscape detail as a primary design activity, both pragmatic and poetic, using a range of built landscape design examples.
A valuable resource for professionals and students in landscape architecture, architecture, urban design, and environmental design, The Art of Landscape Detail:
* Provides a practical introduction to the aesthetic concerns, form, language, and expression of landscape detail
* Explores a wide range of detail issues-including materials, climate, durability, implementation, and failure-and their influence on the overall detail design process
* Examines detail design processes and research approaches that designers can apply in the analysis and development of their own work
* Contains in-depth case studies of eight award-winning landscape architecture design projects, including provocative discussions with the designers on the establishment and evolution of their detail design philosophy
* Features more than 150 images illustrating forms and site detail from national and international built landscapes

Beautiful and inspiring........2005-08-30
With this book, David Suzuki takes us on a journey around the world and shares with us the intimate knowledge that idigenous tribes still have about the natural world they live in. Most of us live in cities and have all but lost our 'link' to the earth; this book makes me want to fight to get it back.
beautifully written and inspiring.......2000-05-25
A beautiful synthesis of native ecological knowledge and western scientific insights. Suzuki and Knudtson call for a new way of relating to nature by combining the "ways of knowing" of the indiginous and western mind. It is not only beautiful to read but incredibly important to our time. Highly recommended.
An OK book but largely a rehash of existing material.......1999-02-19
David is a sincere man and his TV series The Nature of Things broke ground in many areas. This book is well written but is mainly a collection a material from other sources pointing out that native peoples have had much more experience dealing with nature than science has. Many good points but does not draw strong philophical directions for those seeking to apply the illustrations to daily life.

A must book for any enthusiasts on amphibians captive care.......2007-08-01
A must book for any enthusiasts or veterinarian. It is the first serious book on amphibians medicine. It also covers some interesting chapters on captive care and rearing.
Medical degree needed!.......2007-05-27
I bought this book when I had a sick newt on my hands and wanted to get some deeper insights as to what may be wrong. Even the vets I took my pet to were mostly unable to help much, so I tried to take matters into my own hands, at least this way when I went to the vet, I'd be able to bring some ideas and understandings to the table. Let me add that I am a science teacher, so I am no dummy with respect to scientific understanding, but my background is NOT in biology, which is what's essential in the understanding of this book. Also, the book is not meant for "lay people", such as myself, but rather veterinary or medical students. Now I see why. The book was very expensive, which I didn't mind if it had helped, and very difficult to underdstand. The book had very little information with respect to newts in general and rather focused on other amphibians such as frogs. There were very few pictures or chapters/paragraphs even devoted to newts. I wish there had been a copy of the book in a library for me to check out beforehand, as I would not have purchased the book if I did. I'm sure for a vet student the book is probably wonderful, but for someone with no biology background trying to search for some specific answers, it fell way short.
An invaluable title for veterinarians.......2001-12-13
Kevin Wright and Brent Whitaker's Amphibian Medicine And Captive Husbandry is a comprehensive, in-depth, scholarly reference manual designed to introduce and assist veterinary practitioners in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in captive amphibians. However, it also serves as an invaluable, core addition to the library of any herpetologist, breeder or pet owner of an amphibian, for it extensively covers numerous details of the care, feeding, and reproduction of captive amphibians, as well as disease diagnosis, basic clinical techniques for treatment. The many diseases discussed include sicknesses that are infectious, metabolic, nutritional, neoplastic, and idiopathic. 243 color pictures, 317 black and white pictures, and 54 tables greatly enhance the meticulous and highly precise text of this exhaustively complete reference. An invaluable title for veterinarians and/or owners of amphibians.
Comments from co-editor Dr. Kevin Wright.......2001-10-17
Hello, I am Dr. Kevin Wright, co-editor of Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry. Given the global decline of amphibian populations noted at the end of the 20th century, Dr. Whitaker and I designed Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry to introduce the diagnosis and treatment of disease in amphibians to a wide range of audiences. Although our primary intent was to provide a practical but thorough text for the veterinary clinician, we believe this book will be an essential part of any biologist's library; the topics covered range from amphibian captive husbandry and propagation to the diagnosis of disease in amphibians by the application of basic clinicopathologic techniques. Topics are arranged by etiology. The pathology section is highly detailed and provides the only overview of amphibian pathology published.
Recognizing that the understanding of veterinary medicine is facilitated by illustrations, Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry includes 243 color pictures, 317 black and white figures, and 54 tables.
We highly recommend this book to any individual, institution or organization that works with captive or wild amphibians: veterinary clinicians, comparative pathologists, veterinary students, herpetologists, herpetoculturists, zoos, aquariums, biomedical research facilities, and libraries.

Customer Reviews:
the BEST.......2007-06-11
Dr. Noga is the leading authority on fish diseases that those of us in the aquarium industry deal with on a daily basis. This book is full of knowledge and wonderful pictures as well that make diagnosis easier and treatment quicker. We use this book so often that this is the third copy that I have purchased. Definately a must have for any fish geek's book collection and/or reference shelf.
Systemic Approach.......2003-07-14
This book has been very helpful as I begin my hobby in aquarium science. Fish will get sick and I like the systemic approach that this book takes. Many books on fish disease barely cover the surface and don't discuss anything but the most common ailments. Well done, well referenced.
Well done....the best book I've ever seen on fish health!.......1998-12-17
This is an excellent book for fish health professionals and students alike. It contains methods for diagnosing fish diseases as well as detailed biology, life history, and the current most effective treatment regimen for each organism. The book covers environmental problems, as well as bacteriology, virology, parasitology, and nutritional deficiencies. It is well written and organized making it a good resource book for the laboratory.

Excellent Book on Waste Management...Don't Be Scared By The Book's Size!.......2006-05-17
This is a really good book that I had to purchase for my graduate level Haz. and Waste Management class. Each chapter provides detailed info, covering everything from solidification and stabilization to proper waste management protocols and corrective action procedures for disposing of waste. You'll also find info about biological and chemical reactions, as well as land disposal and recycling. In other words, it covers the gamut.
Initially, I thought that the book would be boring, but I really learned a great deal from it. We had to do select homework problems from each chapter (some of which our teacher required a lot of detailed answers for), which weren't that bad. The only problem that I had was a lack of any kind of hint for the questions at the end of the chapter. Most of the answers you can find by reading certain chapters, but if you are unsure of where to find that info, you're out of luck if your teacher doesn't correct your papers. Overall, this book comes highly recommended for learning the finer details of waste management!
designer's reference.......2003-07-23
Although this book is geared towards upper level engineering students, I found it extremely beneficial in my research as a graduate student in architecture. Architects and landscape architects interested in reclaiming the post-industrial landscape will find it to be a clear and concise guide to contaminants and remediation technologies.
A plug for ERM - pure and simple!.......2002-05-17
The titlle of the book implies that it has much to do with hazardous waste management, although in reality, it is more about remediation or site cleanup. Classic hazardous waste management deals with the MANAGEMENT of hazardous wastes within an industrial setting and how NOT to let it get into the media in the first place. In this regard, while the authors had the right intention, they fell short. For example, the chapter on environmental auditing was very weak and not given much attention, which is really at the heart of hazardous waste management. In addition, a troubling issue that took away from the book was the blatent self-promotion of ERM in the book, beginning with the foreward by Paul Woodruf, ERM's CEO, and the profuse listing of ERM self credits from editing to graphics. Who really authored the book, the authors listed, or ERM?

Awakening Spirits By Tom Brown.......2007-01-05
As one reads this book they must seek the Grandfather's and Tom Brown's wisdom as an innocent uncarved block. This first half of the book tells the reader of how Grandfather acquired his sense of spiritual purity that flows through all belief systems. The second half teaches the reader of the meditation techniques that Brown teaches at his school. Anyone that is a spiritual person should read this book. Thanks Tom
Worth the Flaws.......2006-03-24
Tom Brown is, quite frankly, a terrible writer. Had I not heard him speak live, I would have thrown this book away and written Tom off as a half-educated moron who thinks he has something intelligent to say about touchy-feely, self-centered, pseudo-spiritual mumbo-jumbo. Fortunately, personal interaction with the man tells me that he is far more intelligent than his grasp of grammatical and large structural elements of writing would indicate. His famed charisma and passion for what he teaches is sincere. His understanding of the human condition, the material and spiritual deficiencies of this culture, and the importance of re-education (as opposed to political movements, fads, etc.) are what make his message so powerful to so many people.
Awakening Spirits is, as I said, not the most well-written book I've read in the last several years by far. There are only cliché attempts and eloquent language, this style and structure is repetative, and there are nearly constant instances of places where another word or phrase would have been better used. Nevertheless, if the reader is willing to overlook these annoyances, as well as do some of the extra work required to understand what Tom is valiantly attempting to communicate, this book has the potential to reveal profound truths and offer a new approach to the world that is sorely needed in our day and age. The exercises are effective, and the philosophic principals can be applied to everyday life.
It's unfortunate that this book doesn't have the same power as Tom Brown in the flesh. The reader misses out of the convincing charisma Tom can give to his live students, and is required to take much more on faith. It's a lot to ask, but what's given is so great that I can't imagine anyone who takes this book as seriously as it deserves would ever regret investing in it.

FROM THE CRITICS
Library Journal
A tracker, outdoorsman, and survival school founder, Brown shares some of the insights he gained from his Native American teacher named Grandfather. The book explains how Grandfather gained his wisdom, how Brown learned these intuitive skills of spirit, and how the reader can translate them into everyday life through a meditative process called Sacred Silence. It requires basic relaxation and comfort of body, freedom from distraction, and concentration of mind and spirit. Readers interested in shamanistic teaching, Native American traditions, spiritual healing, development of intuition, and sensitivity to external nature may find this book absorbing and useful as a guide. Recommended for public libraries.
Okay, but not the greatest..........2004-04-17
Overall, the book has been pretty interesting, but I recognized a lot of stuff from other books I'd read that predated this one. I will say, though, that this book presents much of what is written in "How to Meditate" in a much simpler fashion.
