Customer Reviews:
A bit disappointed.......2007-05-13
"The little soul and the sun" was better. I guess I expected to see more experience of the Little Soul in the second book.
Amazing.......2007-05-13
I have read this to my children many times and I encourage you to do the same.
So inspirational.......2007-04-07
This book is great for children and adults alike. It provides comfort in reflecting the truth of our being and purpose here on this Earth. I highly reccommend it to anyone who is interested in the enlightened approach to spirituality.
I'd give it 10 STARS!.......2007-03-23
This book is an absolute MUST if you have children or grandchildren.
I have been exposed to Mr. Walsch's work over on over, and love it. However this book is trully written in an amazing way, that if I'd have to explain to my 3 year old where she comes from and what happend etc...I'd be lost for words! Its a MUST book together with the "Little soul and the Sun"
Teach your Children Well.......2007-02-19
I only regret one thing, that I did not have this treasure book when I rreaised my oldest children. It is a critically required perspective that all children should have to live an abundant and happy life.

Customer Reviews:
Ridiculous .......2007-09-13
I stopped at the library to look at this book before I purchased it. I'm glad I did. I randomly glanced at the experiments. Almost all of them required hard to find materials, some things I never heard off. For example one experiment wanted you to have an old turn table. Another one parts from a taken apart VCR. There is an experiment that requires cut copper pipes. A few needed PVC (PCV?) pipe holders. This is supposed to be for preschoolers. If you have a garage full of old parts great, but if you are looking for a book that you can have fun with your child using things from around the house this is not for you. You'll spend more time looking for materials in thrift stores and hardware stores then doing the actual experiments.
A surprise of a book!.......2006-01-08
I checked this book out from the library and now I want my own copy! The experiments are very unstructured and feel like playtime to my little engineer. Easy to set up and I don't have to deliver a lecture about what it is we're studying; he simply gets to play and I get to watch him (it's fun and amazing).

Book Description
The Earth is now desperately vulnerable; so are we. This gift-priced-and-sized book contains original, stimulating mini-essays about what is going wrong with our planet and about the greatest challenge of our century: how to save the Earth for us all. It is pithy, yet intellectually credible well-referenced, wry, yet deadly serious. An all-new U.S. edition-the U.K. edition has sold over 40,000 copies!
Researched and written by an eminent British architect, James Bruges, The Little Earth Book is a clarion call to action, a mind-boggling collection of mini-essays on today's most important environmental concerns, from global warming and poisoned food to economic growth, Third World debt, genes and "superbugs." Undogmatic but sure-footed, the style is light, explaining complex issues with easy language, illustrations and cartoons. Ideas are developed chapter by chapter, yet each one stands alone. It is an easy browse-equally at home bedside, in the bathroom or in a briefcase.
The Little Earth Book provides hope, with new ideas and examples of people swimming against the current, of bold ideas that work in practice. Did you know:
If everyone adopted the Western lifestyle, we would need five earths to support us.
In 50 years the U.S. has-with intensive pesticide use, doubled the amount of crops lost to pests.
Environmental disasters have created more than 80 million refugees.
Packed with easy-to-digest information, James Bruges spells out, clearly, concisely and with alarming documentation just what we're up against and what must be done.
Presented in the same trim size as 50 Things You're Not Supposed To Know, this book continues Disinformation's line of value-priced, impulse purchase books.
We will be working with environmental groups to launch The Little Earth Book on Earth Day 2004 (April 22nd) with a wave of publicity and advertising.
Customer Reviews:
Take it with a grain of salt........2005-06-12
While issues like GM crops and global warming are hot topics, the research on some of these things is still accumulating- so results are inconclusive. However, as with any issue, the alarmist perspective is very seductive- the problem is, it leads people to make too many assumptions. I'll toss out an example or two of my favorite issues:
"Our earth is heating up from pollution and greenhouse gasses and..."
The earth's climate has been fluctuating forever. We just recently (past 50 years) started looking for possible human causes of climate change. Science takes time to pin things down accurately- I wouldn't be so quick to jump to conclusions. Besides, alarmists say that the world's oil is going to be gone in about 50 years anyway. One of the first things i learned in science is that a correlation does not necessarily lead to a connection. Just because the earth's temperature and sea levels are rising now, does not mean that stopping all pollution will curb that trend. I'm sure burning fossil fuels doesn't help, but don't be tempted to point to cars and factories as the sole cause
of it all.
"Recycling helps save trees and resources, etc"
Recycling is a waste of resources in general- it takes more fuel and money to reprocess paper and plastic than using virgin materials (fuel for the trucks, factories, etc). In most communities, the only thing worth recycling economically is aluminum. Paper is a renewable resource- we grow trees specifically to make paper; we don't need to produce chemical waste from recycling it needlessly (waste from acid residue can be found in a lot of paper today). In the end, conservation isn't always a bad thing- but it's an overall wasteful process right now, so I'd rather it not be a subsidized instisution getting money from my paycheck.
"Recycling may be the most wasteful activity in modern America: a waste of time and money, a waste of human and natural resources."
-John Tierny, New York Times
Heh, couldn't resist throwing in some spin.
I'm not against reading this book at all- its good to look at global/environmental issues. Just make sure you look at both sides.
You Need to Read This. Period........2004-04-04
Already a third of the planet's "natural wealth" has been lost.
If everyone lived as we do in the US, it would take four earths to support us.
In the last 50 years - with the intensive use of pesticides - the US has doubled the amount of crops lost to pests.
Three-fourths of all plant species have become extinct since 1900.
Environmental disasters have left 80 million people as refugees.
The number of people living on $2 a day in the world has risen by 50% in the last 20 years.
Genetically modified crops have farmers using more herbicides and pesticides, not less.
90% of the Earth's dwindling fresh water supply is consumed by industry alone.
The top 1% of US households possesses more wealth than the entire bottom 95%.
Commercial banks, not the central government, create the build of America's currency.
The arms trade is America's most heavily subsidized industry.
Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera...
Concise, well-documented, and full of great references and links, discussions in this book range from nanotechnology to natural farming; from biomimicry to the patenting of life; from the future of oil and the hydrogen economy; from ecological footprints to global equity accounting schemes; from the arms trade to peace tools; from religion to sustainability; from eugenics to intuition and creativity; from antibiotics to genetic experimentation; from Christianity to Islam; from increasing economic inequality to universal basic income grants; from plutonium to persistent organic pollutants; and draws from a wide variety of sources, from Bill Clinton to Hildegard of Bingen. Were the book printed on acid-free, 100% post-consumer recycled paper, I would dare say it foot the recognition-of-global-ecocrisis-and-response bill perfectly. Oh, wait, it was.
Another Disinformation Mindbomb!

Fascinating Facts and Fotos!.......2007-01-12
Even though it is a smaller book, it is packed with fascinating facts about snowflakes and beautiful, detailed photos. I purchased both the book and notecards. The notecards were special for this year because the U.S. Postal Service published stamps of the author's snowflakes. It is fun to send a snowflake note and use the snowflake stamp on the envelope.
interesting book as an interesting gift.......2007-01-10
I gave this book and note card collection as a gift. Almost everyone can use note cards, and this set was a perfect unique Christmas gift.
Wonderful pictures of real snowflakes adorn the gift cards and the pages of the included little book.
A really charming gift I was proud to give. I've always believed in giving gifts to others that I myself would like to receive , and I would (and probably will!) willingly buy this set!

Book Description
In this lay reader's introduction to the most spectacular and devastating of all geological events, Rolf Schick describes how earthquakes and volcanoes are related, and how they are an integral part of Earth's structure. Tracing the latest findings and theories in plate tectonics, he helps readers ask and answer the basic questions: What was it during the formation of Earth that led to these phenomena? Why do they occur in certain areas and not in others? How can we, within reason, protect ourselves from their devastation? And how far have we come, and how far can we go, in predicting when they will strike? For the reader who wants a concise and accessible guide to what makes the ground shake and explode, this is the perfect introduction.

Too many mistakes.......2005-01-04
There are far too many mistakes in this book. From misplaced dots to missing numbers, this book was a frustration at times for my child. Having been originally published in 1994, you'd think Dover Publications would have had plenty of time to correct the mistakes in this book. Such poor quality control has led me to never want to buy another dot-to-dot product from Dover. I have had better luck with other Dover products though.

An Adventurous and Suspenseful Book .......2005-03-02
This was a very interesting book. It taught me about all the ruff times the Native Americans went through when the Englishmen moved to North America. The book also showed how badly the Englishmen treated the Native Americans. The Englishmen would give the Indians free supplies just for living on a reservoir. The free supplies they got though were either rotten food or torn disgusting blankets. Many of the Native Americans would rather die fighting than to die on the reservoirs. This led to many battles between the Native Americans and the Englishmen.
About Only Earth and Sky Last Forever.......2002-03-05
In the story, the main character lived in an Indian settlement. He saw a beautiful girl named Lashuka there, and decided that he wanted to marry her. He asked Lashuka's mother if they could be wed, but she saw no reason to let him marry her. She said that he didn't have anything to offer, so he went to join with the warriors and prove himself. He attacked a small number of white men with them, but something horrible happened. Agency warriors, Indian warriors that lived on the Bluecoats' land, attacked them and saved the white men. The thought of Sioux fighting Sioux disturbed him so much, he set out in hopes of ending it and proving himself to Lashuka's mother.
I enjoyed this book because it was really descriptive and its set a picture in my mind. It was interesting and I thought that it was a good topic for a book. It was exciting to see the plot unfold. I really enjoyed it, and I think that anyone who enjoys a good, adventurous book would really enjoy it, too. The beginning was good at preparing you for the rest of the book, and the middle and end was really exciting. It showed me what Native Americans went through, and I thought it was really interesting. Overall, it surprised me at how adventurous it was.
A good book, but the ending feels rushed and incomplete........1999-10-20
In search of novels about Native Americans for my seventh grade classes, I recently read this work. The story of Dark Elk's struggle to make sense of his world in the critical historical period leading up to the battle of Little Bighorn is filled with a realistic mixture of hope, sorrow, strength, and futility. Benchley had my attention right up until the ending. After the big battle scene, however, I felt that Benchley must have run out of ideas. He summarizes the rest of his character's life in two short, un-enlightening paragraphs. Whether this listless conclusion symbolizes the emptiness of Dark Elk's remaining years or not, I found it to be unsatisfactory.
A good book.......1999-04-19
this was an excellent book because it tells the life of the native americans who lived here before us. I recommend it to any age reader.
Well-written, first look into Native American culture.......1998-12-14
I must admit that I read this book about 28 years ago, but it touched something in me that I have not forgotten since. This book gives young people a glimpse into Native American culture in a way that can make them see the goodness of these people and their connection with the earth and all things in it.
I recently gave it to my 9 year-old son and he enjoyed it immensely. I can only hope that it showed him ways to treat (and not treat) others.
I highly recommend this book for parents who are trying to show their children some of the philosophy and culture of the people who were here before us and only wished to continue their way of life as they had for centuries.

On a lovely plain far away sit five statues, each with a squat red fiend who lives inside. The fiends marvel at the world outside their stony encasements: the beautiful sky, the land, the sea, the sun, and the moon. So one day they decide to squirrel away their favorite pieces of the universe inside their statues. Sure, it is fun at first, but they soon realize that their prizes, once isolated, just aren't the same--the sun can't stay up without the sky, the sky is invisible without the land, the sea can't flow without the pull of the moon... In the end, they put their fiendy heads together and decide to put everything back. Sarah Dyer's simple story about appreciating the universe and its harmonious web was first published in England and awarded the Bronze Medal in the 2001 Smarties Book Prize. Youngsters will love the idea of these Maurice Sendak-style monsters living inside the rocks, and Dyer's gorgeous cross-section glimpses are perfectly enchanting. Her depictions of a fiend rolling up the sky like a piece of paper or catching the moon in a big butterfly net are wonderfully clever and sure to charm both children and adults alike. A future classic, perhaps? (Ages 2 to 5) --Karin Snelson
Book Description
Five little fiends each live in a statue and come out each day to enjoy the world around them. Then, one day, they decide that they want to keep their favorite parts of the world to themselves. So one takes the sun, one the moon, one the land, one the sea, and one the sky. But when the fiends discover that the sun can not stay up without the sky, the sea can not flow without the pull of the moon and so on, they decide to return each element so that the world might be in balance once again. This is a book for any child (or adult) and one of the few that is truly universal.

BRILLIANT BOOK!.......2006-05-03
We (me, Husband Guy, 29-month-old Booger Eater, and the two Tuna Breaths) just got this book, and it's fantastic! The good-stuff messages of sharing, cooperation, and appreciation of nature are presented without the usual lecture, the flow of the book as a whole is perfect and satisfying, the artwork is superb, and the pictures of the fiends themselves are thoroughly charming. (Amusing to us all--the fiends have NIPPLES! Not often found in children's books, and far too lacking--we all got 'em! Kudos for the nipple inclusion!) Moreover, the Tuna Breaths find the hardcover edition quite pleasing to chin-rub on. An immediate, unanimous favorite! Ms. Dyer, more like this, please!
A Clever Children's Book.......2005-06-26
As a mother, I like this book very much. It illustrated the importance of sharing and appreciation of the grestest wonders around us. In additional to the interdependence of each wonder, how do they harmonize in reality.
I applied it to our family when reading to my son who is under 3. He could easily understand how our different roles in the family. I wish him to learn sharing and appreciatation not only the wonders but also everything surrounded us.
Made my daughters eyes GLOW.......2004-02-19
My FIEND got my 3 year old daughter this book from Lebanon, when we read her this book she was fascinated, she asked us to read it over and over... the best thing about this book is that it's out of the ordinary topics, it takes about 5 little weird creatures who you will learn to like despite their ugly appearance, it talks about the importance of sharing and how even the greatest wonders of the world wont be as wonderful if we don't share them... it will make your kids appreciate nature and all it's wonders, and how the sun the moon the ground the sea and the sky all blend together to give as this beautiful complete picture...truly it's a good read! Thank you Maiso Bsaso
The Wonders of the World............2002-07-23
"On a faraway plain stood five lonely statues. Inside each statue lived a little fiend. Every day they would come outside to marvel at their surroundings..." One day, they decided to take that part of the world each liked best, to keep inside their statue and enjoy as their own. One little fiend took the sun, another the sky, the third took the land, the fourth, the sea, and the last little fiend took the moon he so admired. But they soon came to realize that the sun need the sky to stay up, and the sky needed the land. The land died without the water from the sea, the sea needed the moon to flow, and the moon couldn't glow without the light from the sun. So they unselfishly put each part back where it belonged, "...and once again marvel at their surroundings." Sarah Dyer's simple, spare, and poetic text, with its gentle message of sharing and appreciation for the world around us, is complemented by her expressive, bold and colorful illustrations. Together word and art offer a gentle and evocative lesson about interdependence, harmony, and balance that won't be lost on young children. Perfect for youngsters 4-8, Five Little Fiends is a clever and engaging story that is sure to become a family favorite at your house.
