Customer Reviews:
A Great, Down-to-Earth Look at Spirituality.......2005-08-13
In the last few years I've been researching the topic of spirituality & what it really means to be a spiritual person. Of all the books I've read to date, this is probably the most down-to-earth & easy to read/understand.
The author provides many great examples of both spiritual and not so spiritual living - outlining what it takes to step up to the plate and live from a higher perspective.
Much of this book deals with the importance of our intentions, and the need for a more holistic way of thinking/being. The harm that the current seperatist philosophy has caused is also discussed - The idea being that we need to realize that we are all connected in some way, and what we do & say really does have an impact on the world at large.
Overall, I would highly recommend this book for anyone on a spiritual journey, as well as those who are wondering what being "spiritual" is all about.
Puts the ýlightý back in Enlightenment........2003-06-10
Refreshing, no matter what your spiritual background. Gottberg's straight-forward style shows us that the path to true spiritual wisdom does not necessary have to come through thick, lofty academic tomes or decades of rigorous religious practice. The language of the spirit is revealed in the everyday - the struggles and gains we make through the issues of family, friends, money and self-worth. The objective comes in recognizing the spiritual lessons and applying that wisdom in the next situation - all without attachment to external results.
It's Both Practical and Spiritual.......2003-05-17
Kathy Gottberg's book, The Findhorn Book of Practical Spirituality gives a multitude of practical suggestions that help us develop spiritually, connected to It, God, the Universe, Mind, and Spirit. Personally, as a rosarian, I loved her practical analogies to gardening, reminding us that everything has a season, needs nourishment and we always need to ward off negative predators and weeds. As a licensed psychotherapist, I was pleased to see her simple relationship suggestions like people don't "satisfy our every need and want..." but "are walking with us as we learn who we are." At last, there is a practical book I can have in my office for patients who want to improve themselves spiritually as well as emotionally.
Practical Spirituality, Short & Sweet.......2003-05-13
Practical Spirituality is "short and sweet". It is "short" because it does not take hundreds of pages to say that to live a more spiritual life, that is, to actually practice spirituality, like you might practice a life of industriousness or a life of devotion to a person or a cause, that you have only to be aware that "this moment" is the only moment you have control of, that your perspective and your reaction to the current situation are the only things under your control, and that if any of us are divine, then all of us are divine, regardless of how we are acting out our mortal lives here on this planet, which is certainly divine. It is "sweet" for the same reason, that is, to understand the last sentence is to be aware, responsible and accountable for what we think, how we view, how we react to whatever happens each moment of our waking life. Very practical, indeed. I liked it and I "practice" because I believe that "practice makes perfect", and that practicing spirituality tends to make one practically perfect, as a mortal, but divine, being...
Puts the Spirit Back in Spirituality.......2003-04-29
Kathy Gottberg's spirited little book delivers just what it claims it will--a down-to-earth guide to a happier, more spiritual life. Readers may encounter ideas from the New Thought movement, eastern religions, and metaphysics for the first time here or find welcome reminders during a journey begun long ago. Either way, "Practical Spirituality" provides support for almost all aspects life from finances to relationships. It's a quick easy read and comes with a practical price-tag too. For less than the cost of a movie and popcorn, you can spend an enjoyable evening and enrich your life as well.

Product Description
Bringing Heaven Down to Earth II follows in the traditon of its bestselling predecessor in that it delivers the Lubavitcher Rebbes thoughts in tight little packages and it presents both the pragmatic and the profound. It goes a step further in some ways. Although it is still a very practical book, you may find it has somewhat more cerebral flavor.
Chapter begins with a short essay providing the background to the thoughts that ensue. Each thought is then presented in as few words as possible, finely crafted and polished to allow the wisdom they contain to shine clearly through.
This book is not meant as a one-time read, but as a companion to guide and teach as life goes by. For every situation of life and every challenge, there is a jewel of wisdom that will help the reader discover what it is he or she must learn from this moment of life and how he or she must grow.

Book Description
Most people consider happiness the most important pursuit in life, yet few seem to find it. Women, in particular, face a constant internal battle between finding their own happiness and ensuring the happiness of others. Debbie Gissoni, aka The Goddess of Happiness, shows that happiness is a choice that anyone can make, anytime and anywhere. In 44 dynamic entries the author shares her stories, insights, humor, and simple suggestions to bring out the radiant Goddess in every woman. Each entry includes meditations and journaling ideas to help readers transform the pursuit of happiness into a tangible, everyday practice. Gissoni teaches that all women are goddesses — they just need to tap their innate power and reacquaint themselves with their own magic; and that life is meant to be enjoyable — not to be taken so seriously or made too complicated. Each of these chapters ends with five simple ways to have an easier and happier life.
Customer Reviews:
The Goddess of Happiness.......2007-03-26
THE GODDESS OF HAPPINESS is a treasure...easy to read, inspirational and it constantly reminds me...that I am a Goddess with all my happiness right inside of me ready to share with those around me. This book is every bit as delightful as its author. Last fall, I had the pleasure of meeting Debbie! THE GODDESS OF HAPPINESS exudes her warm, charming and optimistic outlook on life. I bought this book for my two daughters and hope to gift it to all of my dear friends on their birthdays.
2 brain cells or less required.......2007-01-05
This book is trite, full of cliches, and has nothing new to offer an intelligent reader. If you seek inspiration in your daily life, check out "Living a Beautiful Life" by Alexandra Stoddard.
Awaken Your Spirit.......2005-11-03
Reading the Goddess of Happiness is like sipping chocolate in the morning. The texture of Debbie Gisonni's stories (you can almost see her writing with a smile) bring out the spirit of indulgence we feel and often submerge due to the pressures of the day. She'll show you how to enjoy chocolate without the guilt, how to get moving without a big exercise commitment, and how to count your blessings even when you face stumbling blocks. A quick read, a fast way to smile.
Even a cynic like me loves it.......2005-08-16
I'm a pretty cynical (but content) person in general and tend to pooh-pooh the "how to be happy" genre of books probably because of my gritty, punk rock past, but, darned if The Goddess of Happiness didn't help me get through a really heart-wrenching breakup. I'm forever grateful. Now, whenever I need a little lift, I simply open the book to any page and read a little bit. I haven't lost my edginess, but my heart's a little softer. Go figure.
Very Inspirational! Rediscover and be the goddess that YOU are!.......2005-08-04
The Goddess of Happiness: A Down-to-Earth Guide for Heavenly Balance and Bliss is a compilation of 44 short and easy-to-read essays about practical lessons that all of us Goddesses probably already know but hardly ever follow. It reminds us that each Goddess is entitled to her happiness. Debbie Gisonni uses quotes and personal stories that are easy to relate. Overall, it is a very inspirational book and has put me on track to rediscover and be the Happy Goddess I know I am.

Book Description
Here's a book of daily meditations that's not afraid to say it like it is. What you'll find here are meditations written for today's women - those women that are more likely to find themselves on their knees scrubbing the bathroom floor than in prayer at a retreat house. But just because they're scrambling through busy days doesn't mean women can't have an intimate relationship with God. Rather, mundane experiences can be the perfect opportunity for recognizing God. Author Karen Stroup writes openly and honestly as she shares her reflections from an ordinary life. From toaster ovens to tabloids, book clubs to bracelets, she draws inspiration from the silly to the serious and offers spiritual tidbits for every day of the year. Readers will delight in Stroup's fresh, inviting, and spunky style. And they'll never see the ordinary as "just ordinary" again.
Customer Reviews:
Simply garbage - no gift wrap wasted here.......2007-01-02
If you are looking for a thought-provoking book of meditations to inspire greater spiritual awareness or deepen your understanding and consciousness about faith in a "Higher Power" you will not find it here.
This book is a disappointment, waste of time and money.
What kind of ordained minister writes, "One Christian is no Christian" (page 544). How can she judge another as a "godless Yankee" and determine she was "not a church-goer" because the woman resented the invasion of her personal spiritual choices (pages 235-236)?
Much of the text was nothing but inane prattle and stream-of-consciousness musings with spiritual ideas included as an afterthought.
Most tiresome were her writings for Christmas. Pregnancy tests? Baby showers? Maternity clothes? Morning sickness? The author's attempts at analogy seem particularly pathetic in light of her repeated declarations of sadness and regret over her own childlessness.
A Daily Reminder of What is Important and What is Not........2003-03-23
In "Don't Gift Wrap the Garbage", Karen Stroup gives us daily reminders of what is important and what is not. So buy the book. Read It Slowly. Let the thoughts ignite some memories and fuel some fantaties for the future. Deal with the challenges the thoughts offer. Then learn how to live with the memories and challenges in creative and challenging way. How we begin the day sets the tone for the day. These meditations set the tone for the day. They are readly friendly, emotionally engaging, and theologically insightful.
Don't Gift-Wrap the Garbage.......2003-03-09
I believe this book will remind readers that God is with us in all our activities regardless if they are routine or special events. The author presents us with a reminder each day that all the things we do and the people we touch are part of Gods plan. She adds humor with an insight that will help readers see God more clearly in their daily lives and this too will lift the spirit.
DON'T GIFT-WRAP GARBAGE-DOWN TO EARTH DAILY MEDITATIONS.......2003-03-05
We received this book for Christmas as a gift from our daughter. Karen Stroup is an ordained minister that has written a delightful journal of daily reflections that makes the daily walk with God a delight. This easy to read book of reflections often bring a chuckle or grimace to your daily life challenges of grocery shopping, boring meetings and laundry. Karen tries to see a Christ reflection in all the daily challenges of a woman to lead meaningful life in this somewhat chaotic world. Karen writes with insight, humor and truth. Karen's book would be a wonderful gift for friend or family to be enjoyed every day of the year.
Humorous and fun meditations.......2003-03-03
Whoever said meditations had to be formal and serious hasn't had the pleasure of enjoying these fun and meaningful meditations. The author takes the time to bring up small, everyday occurances, and brings a deeper insight and wisdom to those events so common to our lives. Her use of humor and her ability to take those examples and make them something to bring us pause and reflection give us a wonderful way to address each day. This book is a rare find - meditations that are pleasurable and fun to read - in addition to being reflective, insightful and thought-provoking gems.

Field guides are designed to help us identify and better appreciate the natural world around us--whether it be spotting the Baltimore oriole or recognizing the Rocky Mountain juniper tree. James Thornton, a naturalist and renowned defender of the earth (a former attorney at the Natural Resources Defense Council), has compiled a field guide for helping readers identify and appreciate the wonders of the soul, as if it, too, were an natural terrain filled with beautiful mysteries. Although Thornton draws upon Buddhism, Christianity, and Jungian psychology, he is at his best when relying on metaphors and lessons from nature to illustrate the deeper work of spiritual development, such as facing the "Beasts in the Forest of Our Hearts" or finding courage from meandering, aging rivers, or learning truly to listen by hearing the songs as well as the breath of the titmice and chickadees. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
After a career as one of the nation's top environmental lawyers, James Thornton spent several years on retreat, culminating in a meeting with the Dalai Lama, who asked him to teach a path of integration and wholeness.
In
A Field Guide to the Soul, Thornton leads us through a series of contemplative exercises designed to clarify the body, mind, and heart, and make a deep connection with the wisdom encoded in the natural world. His nature writing is joyously lyrical; the book as a whole is immensely practical, drawing on Jungian psychology, and Buddhist, Hindu, and Christian teachings, to give us the tools to work for the benefit of all living beings.
At a time when people are desperate to make some sense of their lives, Thornton shows us how to embark on our own hero's journey. Only by taking full responsibility for our thoughts, feelings, and actions can we bring about the revolution in consciousness that is so vital today. In order to discover how to care for the Earth and all its inhabitants, we must first learn how to care for ourselves. Here is a practical manual that shows us the way.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent New Age book--A critical review.......2001-08-02
I read this book because I strongly believe in reading opinions I disagree with. And in the end, I do disagree with some of Thornton's conclusions. However, I have to admit that this is one of the most insightful New Age texts I have ever read. It was very challenging on a personal level, and I learned a lot about myself while reading it. Thornton is certainly thought-provoking, intelligent, and a capable writer. If you enjoy New Age books, you should definitely read this one. If you do not, you should give this one a try. Few books about spirituality get better than this.
DOES GOD KNOW MY NAME?.......2000-02-01
Not long ago, after having read many books on Buddism and meditation, I began to think that maybe the whole idea of a personal, loving God or Father was a myth of my own making... Our making... A fabrication we needed to survive... An opium of the masses. Although I gained much from reading on Buddism and meditation, I found I just didn't want to let go of the idea of a personal, loving Father with a plan for my life. If this is your hope too, read this book. His encounter with God is honest, unpretentious, and truly mystical. I no longer have any doubt.
Whole Spiritual Guidance.......1999-04-07
This is an unsentimental book that takes you into James Thornton's sacred world and allows one to form or deepen one's one world. He does this with short, easy-to-digest chapters, and in fact I love reading one or two before bedtime. The depth and breadth of wisdom is unique and joyous. He writes, "There is always the terror of stepping out of our old protective skin. But a new one will reliably extrude itself . . . Our heart is broken open, again and again, until it is big enough to hold the world." So, you see, beautiful writing and beautiful wisdom. If you are a person who hesitates to buy books about the soul, fearing new-age trends (I am one of those people who does not go in for cliched new-age topics), please be assurred that this book is not trendy or maudlin. It is a profoundly joyful book, and Thornton's natural vignettes are thought-provoking and calming and illuminating.
amazing and uplfting .I can get there from here.......1999-03-02
I`ve already turned to this book for wise counsel in stressful times and it has really helped. I have friends who want to borrow it but I seem to refer to it every few days so I plan on making birthday gifts to those who really need the natural and positive messages. We really need this book these days!
The Bible of the new millennium.......1999-02-21
There is nothing else out there like this book. It is the Bible for the new millennium. It brings together the deep truths from the world's religions, makes them up to date, adds the only Genesis story that I've ever heard that makes sense to me, and leaves me feeling very very positive. This is a truly important book.

Book Description
Most books on spirituality focus on disciplines like prayer and Bible study. But this can mislead us into thinking that God can only be experienced when we are doing something "spiritual." Apart from private devotional times or church on Sundays, God may seem distant and even irrelevant to our daily lives.R. Paul Stevens has a radically different view of Christian spirituality. True spirituality, he says, is down-to-earth--we encounter God in the ordinary, common stuff of everyday life. Taking his cue from the biblical story of Jacob, Stevens explores the Genesis narrative and uncovers how ordinary moments are made extraordinary, transformed by the presence of God in the midst of the mundane.Dreamer, schemer, worker and entrepreneur, Jacob embodies a multifaceted life of earthy passion and gritty spirituality. Jacob encounters the sacred not only through visions of ladders to heaven and mysterious wrestling matches with angles. Jacob also meets God at home and at work, at meals and in sleep, in solitude and in relationships. From birth to death, through every passage of life, Jacob sees God in the routine details of his everyday experience."Everyday life is the spiritual discipline in which God continuously and graciously meets us," Stevens writes. And in this book, Stevens helps us see that what appears commonplace on the surface actually has great spiritual significance. When we least expect it, God surprises us by re-enchanting our daily experience and making every moment an opportunity to experience his blessing.

Product Description
If you believe that spirituality is available to all who want it in their hearts, you will love reading Bringing Spirituality Down To Earth by Michael Manning.
Mr. Manning states that Our minds, emotions, and physical bodies can be wonderful tools with which to explore life, but the greatest asset that we have is our spiritual ability to directly perceive reality. When seeming complexities are stripped away from a subject, what remains is simple truth. Truth is like a soft, warm rain that falls on everyone. When we set aside our umbrellas--our fossilized notions of reality--all the waters of heaven will be ours for the asking.
Some have called Mr. Mannings book a modern day version of The Prophet. It addresses over eighty major topics of human concern from a spiritual point of view.
This is not a book about religion. The author is careful to distinguish between religion and spirituality. He states, The fact that life is spiritual has nothing whatsoever to do with the rituals, dogma or traditions that we associate with religion. Every moment of our lives is filled with the pulsating love and beauty of spiritual truth.
The spiritual exercises he recommends are a distillation of the most effective techniques he has discovered. The practice of these simple exercises will help the reader to discover greater spiritual truth through direct experience.

Down to Earth But Looking Up: Stories to Lift the Spirit is an invitation to stop and listen to what's happening on Earth. We all have questions: Why am I here, with these people, at this time? What have I figured out so far? What do I need to wonder about a lot more? The book offers the hope that we will see the persons, places, and things on our Earth, in our garden, in our desert, in a new way.

Down to Earth but Looking Up.......2000-07-13
It is amazing how such a seemingly easy-to-read book, gently walks the reader deeper and deeper into a path of self-discovery. By sharing his own experiences, the author, makes you get in touch with your own spiritual self. This book truly makes you think. A gem of modern story telling.
5 STAR BOOK.......2000-06-02
THIS IS A REALLY GOOD BOOK (SORRY, KINDA SLOW 2-DAY, CAN'T THINK OF A BETTER WORD THAN JUST "GOOD"!) ANYWAY THIS A EXCELLENT BOOK AND A GREAT GIFT THAT REALLY OPENS YOUR MIND, ESPECIALLY TO THE CATHOLIC RELIGION. IF YOUR NOT CATHOLIC, IS STILL TALKS ABOUT LIVING AS CHRISTIANS IN GENERAL TOO. I AM PRIVELEGED ENOUGH TO LISTEN TO THE AUTHOR DELIVER A SERMON NEARLY EVERY SUNDAY. HE ALWAYS HAS A STRONG AND POWERFUL MESSAGE. I HOPE HE WRITES MANY MORE BOOKS LIKE THIS.
Reality Check.......1999-11-30
In a time when "gimicky religion" is all too easy to come by this book is a reality check of the first order. If the specific events which are the catalysts for the musings which follow are not ones with which you can identify, you have not been long on planet Earth. This is a book that reminds us all that after "we've found Jesus we still have to brush our teeth and take out the garbage." Hooray for an author who reminds us that all life is holy!
Homespun wisdom for everyday life!.......1999-10-24
In a market glutted with "how-to" manuals, this is a gem of a book for helping us maintain that elusive connection between our busy personal life and the depth of spirituality we are all capable of having. Very readable.
A great thought provoking book........1999-08-17
I picked it up -- got lost in space - then picked it up again. A wonderful book to take to prayer in the workplace, lake, beach on anyplace on the earth. The Author's sister -- Sr.St. Monica Costello
