Rescuing Science from Politics: Regulation and the Distortion of Scientific Research
Wendy, Ed. Wagner Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0521540097 |
Book Description
Rescuing Science from Politics debuts chapters by the nation's leading academics in law, science, and philosophy who explore ways that the law can be abused by special interests to intrude on the way scientists conduct research. The high stakes and adversarial features of regulation create the worst possible climate for the honest production and use of science especially by those who will ultimately bear the cost of the resulting regulatory standards. Yet an in-depth exploration of the ways in which dominant interest groups distort the available science to support their positions has received little attention in the academic or popular literature. The book begins by establishing non-controversial principles of good scientific practice. These principles then serve as the benchmark against which each chapter author compares how science is misused in a specific regulatory setting and assist in isolating problems in the integration of science by the regulatory process.Customer Reviews:

Above Ground Storage Tanks, by Philip E. Myers.......2007-01-20
Superb Book..... Well worth the time and Money.......2001-05-04
Meyers has a well organized, informative text with an easy to find index. The book is particularly useful where the pros and cons of design alternatives are compared. I have seen heated discussions resoved based on Meyer's recommendations.
As anyone who has delt with tank design over the past several years can tell you, design practices, recollections and anecdotes, combined with the occasional company guideline were the only references available. Now Meyers comes forth with an authoritative text that fills a long standing need.
Purchase this book along with the Aboveground Steel Storage Tank Handbook by Brian Digrado and you have (virtually) everything important that has been written about aboveground storage tanks.

Regulation and Compliance in the Atlantic Fisheries: State/Society Relations in the Management of Natural Resources
Stig S. Gezelius Manufacturer: Kluwer Academic Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402015283 |
Book Description
Why and under what conditions are the state's regulations complied with, and when are they violated? Resource scarcity and strict regulation of the Atlantic fisheries have generated a demand for in-depth knowledge of this issue. This comparative study is based on qualitative data from Norway and Newfoundland. It shows that informal social control is a major factor inhibiting violations of formal management regulations among fishermen, and it analyses the relevant moral norms and how they influence compliance. It addresses the relationship between collective morality and self-interest, and describes combinations of normative and strategic action. The comparison of the cases ends with a general theory on the morality of compliance in economies based on harvesting of natural resources for households as well as the market. People concerned with management of fisheries and other natural resources, and social scientists concerned with the questions of compliance and legitimate law will most likely be the primary audiences of the book.
