According to authors Connie Zweig and Steve Wolf, each of us has shadows that hold forbidden feelings such as shame, jealousy, greed, lust, and rage. Left to their own devices these shadows will become destructive saboteurs--causing us to betray our loved ones as well as ourselves. It is not within our power to choose whether or not to have these shadows; however, Zweig and Wolf believe that it is within our power to take responsibility for our shadows and put them to productive use. Chapter by chapter Zweig and Wolf reveal the shadow side of love, parenthood, siblings, friendships, midlife, and work. Rather than deny or destroy these shadows, the authors show readers how to confront and "romance" them in order to access the energy, vitality, and creativity that usually lie dormant within our dark sides.
Book Description
Beneath the social mask we wear every day, we have a hidden shadow side: an impulsive, wounded, sad, or isolated part that we generally try to ignore, but which can erupt in hurtful ways. As therapists Connie Zweig and Steve Wolf show in this landmark book, the shadow can actually be a source of emotional richness and vitality, and acknowledging it can be a pathway to healing and an authentic life. "Romancing the shadow"--meeting your dark side, beginning to understand its unconscious messages, and learning to use its powerful energies in productive ways--is the challenging and exciting soul work that Zweig and Wolf offer in this practical, rewarding guide.
Drawing on the timeless teachings of Carl Jung and compelling stories from their clinical practices, Zweig and Wolf reveal how the shadow guides your choices in love, sex, marriage, friendship, work, and family life. With their innovative method, you can uncover the unique patterns and purpose of your shadow and learn to defuse negative emotions; reclaim forbidden or lost feelings; achieve greater self-acceptance; heal betrayal; reimagine and re-create relationships; cultivate compassion for others; renew creative expressions; and find purpose in your suffering.
The shadow knows why good people sometimes do bad things. Romancing the shadow and learning to read the messages it encodes in daily life can deepen your consciousness, imagination, and soul.

Romancing the Shadow.......2005-09-30
It is a wonderful book. It has helped me when many things. Thank you so much.
Interesting topic, ineffective writing.......2003-04-27
Having just started to read about Jungian psychology, and taken an interest in the concept of the shadow, I approached this book in anticipation after reading Robert A Johnson's 'Owning your shadow'.While Johnson's book was concise and to the point, and very enjoyable to read, this book has been a boring read after the first couple of chapters. The ideas presented are sometimes repetitive and at other times just do not gel. You feel that you've read a profusion of sentences with a sprinkling of punctuations in between but with very little new information or insight as you go from page to page. I don't think I've learnt much, in theory or in practice. Will go to Debbie Ford's "The Dark side of the Light Chasers" now and hopefully find a more satisfying read.
Not usually into psychology/self-help.......2002-06-21
I went through a phase of that when I was teen and never really recovered, but this book is different. I don't know if the term depth psychology applies, but it certainly brings the concept to mind. The author works in Jungian concepts of archetype and shadow and seems to assume familiarity with them. Like many books it has a number of examples, but I found them more detailed and better related to one another. By reading this book one spends some time with the concept that a relationship, with oneself, or a significant other, is continuously evolving and never fixed, but that it can be stable. Zweig gives us the idea of a the third person in a relationship who can be a threatening other or the unity created by the couple, but usually both. This combines with the artistic, rather than scientific, analysis of the Shadow, to create a useful tool which encourages the reader to pinpoint what it is they really want from a relationship, as opposed to what they think they want. It's very easy to be confused on that subject, especially in our society where there's no such thing as an emotional education. You have to do your own work though.
Useful for midlife reflection.......2000-06-09
Imagine yourself at a crowded conference table in a dark room. There are many present, but no role call. Each person is known only when he or she speaks, but you cannot speak. In fact, you sometimes cannot even hear. On the rare occassion that a light briefly shines, your eyes are usually closed. Every decision, reaction, thought and feeling in your life is determined by the voices at this conference. Usually the loudest and shrillest voice dominates. To the authors, this is a picture of your inner life.
The authors attempt to enlighten the reader so that he begins to bring the shadow people into the light. In essence the book is a call for conscious, intentional life. Instead of a mute observer and victim, the authors hope to strengthen the innermost Self so that the voices can be heard, not denied; heeded without dominating.
Like much written from a Jungian perspective, I found this book both frustrating and helpful. References to Greek myths multiply at an alarming rate, but I found that prior knowledge of the pregnant meaning of each myth name was not essential to benefit from this book.
The authors explore family of origin shadows, relationship shadows, shadows in the workplace and the midlife experience of shadow. Four primary defenses against self-awareness of the shadow occur as running themes: money, power, sex and addiction.
It is interesting that there is little or no reference to mortality, aging and legacy shadow issues. Perhaps the ages of the authors (at most 51 years?) has resulted in a less comprehensive view of shadow work. If so, I hope they will update this work in 20 years.
I recommend this work to others, like myself, who are consciously working through midlife questions. This book may open new vistas for these seekers. For those looking for a "how to" prspective, this book will be a disappointment, only nine pages provide practical advice.
A Waist of time!.......2000-01-30
I totally agree with the reviewer Timothy F. Mulligan who said that this book is disappointing.. When I read the title of the book, then the first few pages I was so excited.. I thought this is exactly what I was looking for..
Even while I was reading, I kept saying: "Ok I didn't understand my shadow yet but I'm sure I will do if I'll just be patient enough and read till the end (because it was also starting to get boring" But I was disappointed cause here! I finished the book and it really didn't help! It didn't help me read or see my shadow, talk about romancing it! Later on I read some other books that weren't really talking about this; neither were talking psychology, but helped more in understanding it..
Maybe I didn't read it slow enough! I will try reading again!
Book Description
In The Spiritual Universe, Fred Alan Wolf brings the most modern perspective of quantum physics to the most ancient questions of religion and philosophy. Taking the reader on a fascinating tour of both Western and Eastern thought, Wolf explains the differing view of the soul in the works of Plato, Aristotle, and St. Thomas--the ancient Egyptian's belief in the nine forms of the soul, the Qabalistic idea of the soul acting in secret to bring spiritual order to a chaotic universe of matter and energy, and the Buddhist vision of a "nonsoul." Wolf also mounts a defense of the soul against its modern critics who see it as nothing more than the physical body.

Please be cautious..........2007-07-12
If you are curious about quantum physics, read books by Werner Heisenberg or Max Born or David Bohm. I you are curious about relativity, read books by Albert Einstein or Max Born or Hans Reichenbach or Wolfgang Pauli. Read books by Richard Feynman. A great source for these is the Dover books catalog.
Learn about these topics from the masters. These "pop-physics" books have a certain appeal, but be careful about speculations and the combination of science with spirituality. It can be entertaining to read these books, but keep a healthy skepticism.
Hopefully this Remains only One Physicist's Vision.......2007-06-19
I'm glad to see this book has people thinking about the concepts Fred presents. However, the book has more than one fatal flaw. Read this, but also read Frank Tipler's The Physics of Christianity.
Now, I'm not implying Tipler's book is flawless. It isn't. But both books help the reader to grasp a clearer picture of what physics actually IS saying.
My advice... whenever you read a claim that seems new to you, look for a reference in the endnotes. If the reference seems reputable, fine, if questionable, question the assertion. In either case, keep reading as new books are published. The definitive book hasn't yet been written on this subject.
Is this book fatally flawed?.......2007-02-14
After reading Cynthia Larsen's review, I was very intruiged and went and gave this book a good look. What intruiged me about Cynthia's review was her report that the book has the notion that the individual soul is an illusion, that there really is only one universal soul we all participate in. I've felt this way for decades, which drew me to looking more closely into the book.
But about chapter 4, Fred Wolf reveals a fatal flaw in his fundamental premise, which is that the universe expands for billions of billions of years and then begins to contract. Fred claims that his entire argument is based on this assumption. Well, when he made it, it had as good a chance as the the opposite idea that the universe would go on expanding forever. In a footnote to the second edition, he mentions that this fundamental premise has been questioned by recent theories but that the jury was still out. Unfortunately, it no longer is. The most recent and very compelling evidence is that the universe some billions of years ago passed into a phase of ever increasing accelerated expansion. Those are the observed facts. The theory behind it is wrapped up in the idea of dark energy, a (probably) constant anti-gravitational force that has existed since the big bang and will continue forever, gradually causing the entire universe to evaporate into nothingness.
So much for Tipler's notion of the eventual contraction of the universe "squeezing" it back into infinitely rich life in the distant future. Wolf seems to depend a lot on Tipler's ideas along this line.
However, if we taken an even larger view that encompasses our particular universe, there is now the notion that the universe is only one of an infinite number of others that always have existed and always will exit. Within that context, the notion of their being only one soul of which each of us is but a dim reflection still has life. Perhaps Wolf will come out with a new book and salvage his original insight of the "one soul" that will not depend on a scientific theory that has been falsified.
And indeed the notion that there is only one soul is more of an insight than a belief or speculation. The challenge of explaining this insight is twofold. First, explaining what it means. This first part is very important and would thoroughly explain the difference between an insight and a speculation and why this is the former and not the latter. Second, rationalizing it in terms of the latest scientific theory, to show that it is not contradicted by the facts that we know about the way the universe actually is. This of course is what Wolf tried to do. The problem is he based it on a scientific theory which has now been falsified. Time to go back to the drawing board.
Something is missing in this quantum, spiritual universe.......2005-05-04
I had previously read Fred Allen Wolf's "Parallel Universes" and was intrigued to read about his quantum understanding of the soul. "The Spiritual Universe" begins with a detailed review of the opinions of Plato, Aristotle, and Buddha, among others, concerning the nature of the soul. Apparently Wolf hasn't heard of a fellow named Jesus Christ who did not make the cut for any historical quotes on the nature of the soul. Then again, maybe he had some graduate students doing the heavy lifting work on the book and we all know that physics majors generally aren't known for being well-rounded in the academic sense. Honestly, I found this introduction incredibly tedious rather than enlightening. At the time it seemed like Wolf had arrived at his final conclusions about the nature of the soul while drinking a decaf caramel Macchiato at Starbucks one day and merely required some filler material, much like a typical, well padded undergraduate thesis.
Plodding through this book requires two talents: the tenacity of a polar icebreaker coupled with the gin guzzling gusto of the former captain of the Exxon Valdez. Laboriously cutting through the book like a Toro like a lawnmower with a dull blade, it seemed like I was on a scavenger hunt seeking something resembling substance. To be fair-minded, Wolf does say in his first sentence that this is not an easy book for a scientist to write. He sure delivered on that statement.
Several credible topics were entirely lacking in his tapioca-thick tome. First, it would seem incredibly intuitive that the average person might equate spirit, or soul, with the concept of ghost. Spirits have been the cornerstone of human mythology, tradition and folklore throughout history. I was mildly interested if Prof. Wolf had any insights from the study of quantum physics that might shed some light on why peoples from all cultures have reported seeing spirit or ghost manifestations. This topic was never addressed. Equally disappointing was the fact that Wolf completely ignored any discussion of out-of-body experiences (OBEs), near death experiences (NDEs), or after death communications (ADCs) as evidence of a spiritual or soul state. There is an amazing amount of fascinating literature on these subjects. On a purely personal level, it is difficult to not find at least one person at a cocktail party that has not had some kind of unusual or deeply spiritual experience being reunited with a recently deceased loved one, most frequently during the dream state. I would have been greatly interested in learning what light quantum theory might shed on the viability of ADCs. Could heaven be a parallel universe created from the void by conscious thought? One of the great centers for scientific study for evidence of the continuance of consciousness, the life of the soul after the death of the body, is at Human Energy Systems Laboratory at the University of Arizona. Wolf mentions that he spoke at a conference there yet never discusses any aspect of the academic work on the viability of consciousness after death of the body by scientists like Dr. Gary Schwartz or others. It begs the question, how does one write a scientific examination of the soul without addressing the current research being conducted on the subject? Wolf saves his best for last with his discourse on Bass's Proof and the story about something called Robotina. To be fair, Wolf does warn the reader that he had simplified the material in chapters 7-12 to make it a bit easier to digest.
Well, if you can get through the story of Robotina without drinking the bong water and inserting flaming bamboo slivers under your fingernails you've got my admiration. Sadly, this book is a feckless stinker that will render insensible even the most ardent readers. In the words of Clara Peller, "Where's the beef?" I only recommend the book if you are suffering from acute insomnia and need something innocuous to help kick in the effects of a Nyquil Rusty Nail cocktail to promote a restful nights sleep.
mind opening..........2003-12-28
This is a great book combining metaphysics and quantum physics! This book would deserve five stars but Dr. Wolf did not provide sufficient examples to explain difficult concepts. I do not mind re-read sentances or even pages to have a deeper understanding of the concepts and this book opened my eyes to the spiritual universe.

New Age Jive Turkey Fails to Prove the Existence of the Soul.......2003-12-20
This book was recommended to me by a long-time Alcoholics Anonymous member who is very interested in spirituality. I was therefore very disappointed when, after an interesting exposition of Aristotle and Plato's views on the soul, the author went off on a rampage through ancient Egyptian beliefs, the Qabala, Frank Tipler and "The Physics of Immortality", the Big Bang and the Big Crunch, the Self vs. the Soul, the Buddha and his teachings, Hermes the trickster, ch'i and yin and yang, Kepler, Jung, and Pauli. Somewhere early on in this mess he casually states that he has proven that individual souls don't exist and there is only one cosmic soul which is mysteriously linked with the vacuum of space (which in quantum physics is an active place). His assertions about quantum physics seem to agree with other material I have read but his explanations of how they connect to or illustrate the existence of the Soul are not persuasive. This book suffers from Cosmic Allness. Spare yourself a New Age mindache and take a pass.
Interesting view but not very convincing.......2001-05-26
I hoped this book will give me more solid response to questions I had about the soul, mind etc but I think it is more like anthromorphism. There are assumptions that seem to be taken as definite such as closed end cosmolgy, separation of body and soul or mind which is controversial. The idea of soul is mainly built upon collapse of wave function or rather conciousness. I was intrigued that when a robot tests something it could be registering of both results ie, the wave function does not collapse if it is a robot doing the measurement. there is proof of uniqness of the soul in the creation, that is difficult to comprehend i read it many times but the result is interesting, there goes judea-Christian belief and comes Buddha. It is a book that you should read back and forth many times and contemplate, it is worthed and also read Descrates Error.
Aleph... Isness, just is........2001-02-05
If this book is accepted, it could be revolutionary. A masterpiece--talk about uniting Science and Religion!!! By the time you read just the first chapter your mouth will water for more as you wonder, "By the time I finish this will I finally have an answer to the eternal burning questions?" Well, you will have Fred Alan Wolf's answer, to God, the soul, existence, and so on. He had some difficulty and struggle to write a SCIENTIFIC account of the soul. Science is supposed to only deal with things that can be sensed and directly observed, isn't it? So what place does it have on the soul other than maybe denying its existence? Well, we've never found the soul because we've been asking the wrong questions. We have the wrong idea about the "ghost in the machine." We have the wrong conceptions about many things, Soul, Matter, Self, Conciousness, all different, though related, phenomena. He gives a tour through all past contemplations on the nature of the soul's physics. It starts off with a juxtaposition of Thomas Aquinas' and Aristotles' soulish ideas. Then it goes from Plato, to ancient Egypt, to the Qabala. (Providing us with a modern quantum physics interpretation of the Eden story) Fred not only turns to modern science theories, but also Buddhist teachings. The two fields of knowledge on agree on much more than you would ever think. Even the Dalai Lama has said that it could be possible for a soul to incarnate a computer!! Now, I'm not exactly scientifically inclined... and alot of the chapters were deep material for me to comprehend. I never studied quantum mechanics or anything, but this all depends on your own scientific understandings. Some of it may be over your head, but maybe not then again I was up late pretty tired while reading it, Hehe. But he doesn't obfuscate anything, it will nevertheless will be very interesting. (all kinds of stuff, Zero point energy, the Dirac Sea, antimatter) Once it delves more into the Zen Buddhism which he extols, there is alot of soul philosophy. Seeing that everyone is in the illusory cycle of suffering, and that we lose contact with our souls through material addictions...to the point where we don't differentiate the self and the soul. (Which are more like reflections of one another) Such is the nature of Maya. He shows us that there is no plurality to consciousness. There is really only one soul and consciousness, the mind of God, from which we all arise.
This book is DEFINITELY worth your time. And if you don't gain anything else, one thing will atleast be the most unique theory you've every heard, in the chapter titled "Resurrection Physics."1
Lucid book to investigate into the origin of everything..........1998-11-07
Gives good insight into the Grand Truth of the origin of everything - the Universe(s), Life, Soul, Spirit, God.. from 2 perspectives - Quantum Physics & Budhism. How "Everything" is created from "Nothing" by mere reflection of "Opposites" which is the fundamental Truth held in Budhism. This is done in a pretty good convincing way. The culmination of science (observation & logic) and religion (mysticism) is going to be SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT INVESTIGATION INTO THE ULTIMATE TRUTH FOR EVER..THE GRAND UNIFICATION THEORY for Science which is indeed the MOST IMPORTANT INVESTIGATION for Science is only a stepping stone to understand the Grander and much wider ULTIMATE TRUTH about everything.. This is one of the many, many books being made available in this greatest area of research and it is a pretty good one.

Not useful.......2005-10-19
I'm not actually 13, I just don't remember my password. Wolf Marshall has done a fabulous job in recreating the music of Albert King - just about every note is dead on. However, he transcribes all of Albert's licks in the 3rd pentatonic position (instead of the home position), and he does seem to have good reasoning for it: 1) King used a wound g-string, so this position better duplicates that sound on a normal guitar (with and unwound g-string). 2) King tuned down 1 and a half steps (3 frets), so he could quite easily bend and pre-bend the high e string up to 2 full steps (4 frets). On a normal guitar, it is extremely difficult to do this and usually you won't even get the full bend before you break your e string. These are good reasons, but the licks transcribed in this position are almost useless for playing anything outside of Albert's style. You cannot play fast with the transcribed positions (which Marshall backs up by saying that Albert doesn't play extremely fast anyways). Other than the 2-step bends, these licks are best played in the home position. So if you want to learn Albert King's licks and not be able to apply them to any other blues playing, I would recommend this book. Also, if you don't mind re-transcribing the licks to the pentatonic home position, this book may also be a worthwile purchase (considering that the notes themselves are correct). This is what I am doing now. What I have started to do with these licks is: when I need to do the huge bends, I just go back up to the 3rd position; otherwise, I stay in first. If this is not a hassle to you, buy this book. Otherwise, stay away.
Pentatonic Box 1 or 2 ????.......2005-07-26
The recoring is great...all the four note bends sound good and pre note bends too. Wolf Marshall probably the best guitar signature transcriber around, nails each note perfectly.
The problem I have with this is that the notes are played higher up the fretboard than Albert played them.
I know he was left handed - playing a right handed guitar upside down (like Hendrix) but did not restring the instrument. He also tuned down one & half tones (3 frets).
This makes four note bends impossible on the top string in standard tuning, (YOU WILL PROBABLY BREAK HIGH E STRINGS)which is the way Wolf Marshall recorded it for this package.
If you try the DVD from the same company (Hal Leonard) 'Albert King signature licks' by Andy Aledort, you will see them played in the correct positions.
Anyway I bought both at the same time & was not sure who to believe. This means that this package is not much use afterall.

Great!!.......2004-09-03
A great choice of songs including "Personal Manager" my personal favorite Albert King solo. But the clincher for me is "Blues Power". This song itself is worth the price of the book and CD! It's not the song so much as there is so much of it. It can be looked at as a key to Albert's style. There are so many licks you can learn to "jam" Albert just by learning this song alone. Try breaking this song up anyway you want and jamming with any slow blues track you have and you'll see what I mean. This book/CD was a must for me and I highly recommend it! Wolf did a fantastic job with it! It's worth twice the price!
Great companion guide to Albert King.......2004-09-02
Every book by wolf Marshall is superb, the tracks are so close to his style you cannot tell its Wolf playing but rather that Albert King is teaching us his licks, the notes are perfect and the backing tracks are great to jam with and improvise, highly recommended book to have, thanks wolf !

Wolves too have souls........2001-07-02
THE SOUL OF THE WOLF : A Meditation on Wolves and Man. By Michael W. Fox. 131 pp. New York : Lyons & Burford, 1992 (1980). ISBN 1-55821-150-0 (pbk.)
A few years ago I read a whole shelf of books on animals - Animal Rights, Animal Theology, Animal Experimentation, Ranching and the Meat-Packing Industry, and books on individual animals such as elephants, whales, gorillas, chimpanzees, pigs, sea otters, hamsters, and so on. Although all of the books were extremely informative, and left me with a considerably heightened respect for the many wonderful qualities and powers of our animal kin, one book seemed somehow different and more inspiring than the others : Michael W. Fox's 'The Soul of the Wolf.'
Although all of the books are still sitting on my shelves, I never open them anymore. I don't even like to be reminded of them. They're just too depressing. For what all of them have in common is that they bring home forcefully the enormity of the crime that we daily and unconsciously perpetrate against animals all across the globe. Tens of millions of animals are daily tortured to death in laboratories dedicated to the worship of Mammon. Tens of millions of others are cruelly slaughtered to provide some of the unhealthiest food that humans have ever eaten.
In contrast to the average unthinking selfish denizen of the modern world, who tacitly agrees to the prevailing evil, and who seemingly couldn't care less about the sufferings of animals, Michael W. Fox comes over not merely as a concerned and compassionate figure, but as a truly saintly person.
He has lived with wolves. He has seen very deeply into their nature. He respects them as fellow creatures with whom we have many things in common, but who at the same time are vastly superior to us in many respects. And he has understood, of course, that they too have a soul.
His book is at one and the same time both inspiring and profoundly saddening. We are inspired by the marvel that is the wolf; we are sickened at modern man's treatment of this fellow creature.
In the Buddhist Prajnaparamita literature there is a wonderful verse:
"For all creatures, O Lord, desire happiness; all creatures desire happiness and are averse to suffering...."
Most of us, presumably, are aware of this, but if you read Fox you will also become aware that wolves too are every bit as deserving of happiness, if not moreso, as the humans who are involved in a cosmic crime, not only against wolves, but against the whole of nature, for wolves too have souls.
Just wonderful..........2000-03-21
Michael Fox has an amazing and refreshing understanding of wolves and their world. Not your typical coldly scientific wolf biology book. I highly recommend this to anyone who has even a bit of an interest in wolves or canines in general.

Book Description

This is a brilliant book, easy to comprend, digest and use. Amazing exercises that actually work, especially the 'Unified Chakra invocation', which is very powerful. Well done Tony! I am now a big fan. :-)
An Ascension Handbook.......2000-11-16
I have read a number of books on ascension and I would place this one on a recommended to read list for this subject. This book also "chose me". The exercises and insights are presented in a very easy-to-read format. I have actually used some of the information to help friends and the feedback from them has been positive. It proves the old saying that the proof of the pudding is in the tasting.
It possesses a clarity that is in keeping with the subject!.......1999-07-13
This concept of ascension is the penultimate expression of our sojourn on this planet, I believe. It, to me, is like finding the "Green Door" of the mystical story I read in my childhood. It creates the feeling experienced when evoking the expression, "going home." A very pragmatic spiritual experience. In a word of the venacular, delightful. It truly allows our spirit to have a wonderful human experience. Thanx!!!!!
Excellent.......1999-04-21
I was looking for another book when I briefly started to scan through Tony's book and decided to buy it. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made. The book is delightful to read, intuitive and the exercises work! Regardless of your opinion on ascension, if you are looking for spiritual development...check out this book.
It created a yearning of heart to seek and know truth........1999-01-13
In a store of personnal awareness, this book had chosen me. I wasn't looking for anything in particular, but I found a gold mine so to say... This book, was written in such a way as to build my curiosity and amused my senses, not to mention challenged everything I thought I believed in, but deep inside I already knew...This book was something I felt as I read, not just a visualization...
