Excellent Book on Waste Management...Don't Be Scared By The Book's Size!.......2006-05-17
This is a really good book that I had to purchase for my graduate level Haz. and Waste Management class. Each chapter provides detailed info, covering everything from solidification and stabilization to proper waste management protocols and corrective action procedures for disposing of waste. You'll also find info about biological and chemical reactions, as well as land disposal and recycling. In other words, it covers the gamut.
Initially, I thought that the book would be boring, but I really learned a great deal from it. We had to do select homework problems from each chapter (some of which our teacher required a lot of detailed answers for), which weren't that bad. The only problem that I had was a lack of any kind of hint for the questions at the end of the chapter. Most of the answers you can find by reading certain chapters, but if you are unsure of where to find that info, you're out of luck if your teacher doesn't correct your papers. Overall, this book comes highly recommended for learning the finer details of waste management!
designer's reference.......2003-07-23
Although this book is geared towards upper level engineering students, I found it extremely beneficial in my research as a graduate student in architecture. Architects and landscape architects interested in reclaiming the post-industrial landscape will find it to be a clear and concise guide to contaminants and remediation technologies.
A plug for ERM - pure and simple!.......2002-05-17
The titlle of the book implies that it has much to do with hazardous waste management, although in reality, it is more about remediation or site cleanup. Classic hazardous waste management deals with the MANAGEMENT of hazardous wastes within an industrial setting and how NOT to let it get into the media in the first place. In this regard, while the authors had the right intention, they fell short. For example, the chapter on environmental auditing was very weak and not given much attention, which is really at the heart of hazardous waste management. In addition, a troubling issue that took away from the book was the blatent self-promotion of ERM in the book, beginning with the foreward by Paul Woodruf, ERM's CEO, and the profuse listing of ERM self credits from editing to graphics. Who really authored the book, the authors listed, or ERM?

Book Description
Designed as an introduction to general economics for non-majors, Sharp/Register/Grimes’ text presents economic concepts as useful tools to analyze contemporary social issues. The book may also be used to supplement principles courses. The Economics of Social Issues has garnered a loyal user following for its timely and impartial handling of current social issues which dominate newspapers and television news. While the issues are contemporary and the supporting information updated, the authors remain objective.
Customer Reviews:
Good introduction to applied economics.......2006-12-04
This is an introductory policy economics book. The principal weakness of this book is that it does not give a solid explanation of economic theory, and it will probably be a bit basic for anyone who has taken even separate introductory courses in microeconomic and macroeconomic theory. The book appears to be designed to stand alone as introductory economics textbook for non-economics majors. What little (very little) economic theory is needed to understand this book is explained within, but it is not enough to meet even the needs of introductory class economics class for business or economics majors. Political science majors might find this book useful for giving them an introduction to the economic issues at hand in education, unemployment, free trade, government spending, social security, and other areas (such as the business of big sports). Importantly, the authors seem to come out with new editions often, so they are hopefully keeping up to date on the issues.
This book will give someone as solid a foundation as can be achieved wihtout really learning economic theory, which makes me think that it would be best for people studying a political or policy-related field. It could perhaps be used in a serious economics class, provided sources of more in depth information are also used.
Wrong Edition.......2005-07-06
I am supposed to get 16th edition, instead I received 15th edition. The book was completely changed from the previuos edition
outstanding introduction to economics.......1999-03-18
this is an outstanding book for those who want to know more, but not too much more, about economic thinking. modern examples and applications make the book easy to read, for a university text.

Electrical Operation Of Electrostatic Precipitators (Iee Power and Energy)
ASIN: 0751402664 |
Book Description
Many industrial, power generation and chemical processes produce unwanted fine particulate material as a consequence of their operation. Electrostatic precipitation is a highly efficient method of removing entrained particulate contaminants from exhaust gases and is extensively used in these industries to limit particulate emissions. New legislation aimed at improving the environment by further limiting these discharges has resulted in the technique undergoing considerable development over the past decade, to the point where it has become the method of choice, over a wide range of applications, for limiting particulate discharges. In this new book, the editor has brought together an international team of contributors, mainly industrialists and consultants, to produce an authorative and practical guide to electrostatic precipitation. This book is of interest to all those in process industries or power generation and to academics concerned with gas cleaning and environmental issues.

Environmental science combined with computer technology. One click on a mouse and information flows into your PC from up to 10,000 miles away. When you receive this information you can ferret through the data and use it in any number of computer programs. The result: solutions to plant design problems that affect the health and well being of people around the globe. What does that mean to you, the environmental professional, scientist, or engineer? Computer Simulated Plant Design for Waste Minimization/Pollution Prevention builds on the concepts introduced in Stan Bumble's Computer Generated Physical Properties, the first volume of the Computer Modeling for Environmental Management series. Bumble discusses using computer simulation programs to solve problems in plant design before they occur. He covers design issues for stationary and non-stationary sources of pollution, global warming, troposcopic ozone, and stratospheric ozone. With Computer Simulated Plant Design for Waste Minimization/Pollution Prevention you will understand how to use computer technology to design plants that generate little or no pollution. Even better, you can use the information generated by computer simulation for technical data in proposals, presentations and as the basis for making policy decisions.

Sensible Advice.......2007-02-23
"Healing the planet is dependent on each and every one of us first healing our personal living spaces. This book offers a detailed roadmap." --Organic Consumers Association
I worry that the products in my home may be detrimental to my health. I worry that the waste our consumer society generates is degrading the environment. So I was glad to see a guide like Essentual Environments which points out simple changes we can make to have healthier homes. For instance, stop using scented candles and drinking sodas. Replace your laundry detergent with a biodegradable, non-toxic, laundry detergent. Get a filter for your shower since chemicals in the water get absorbed through your skin.
There are more involved recommendations as well for those willing to invest in improving the health of their living spaces. We owe it to ourselves and to the earth to cut down on clutter, chemicals and waste.
I feel like a whole new person.......2005-03-04
This book is absolutely amazing, and the title could not be more appropriate. This book is filled with practical and useful advice on how to bring your life into balance, and avoid those things that we all think we need, but really make us worse off. You might think that using these strategies your life would be more complicated or difficult, in exchange for living healthier, but instead, you are likely to enjoy your life more while living longer! This book is simply amazing.

Process Integration, Volume 7 (Process Systems Engineering) (Process Systems Engineering Series)
ASIN: 0122368452 |
Book Description
The environmental impact of industrial waste is one of the most serious challenges facing the chemical process industries. From a focus on end-of-pipe treatment in the 1970s, chemical manufacturers have increasinglyimplemented pollution prevention policies in which pollutants are mitigated at the source or separated and recovered and then reused or sold.
This book is the first to present systematic techniques for cost-effective pollution prevention, altering what has been an art that depends on experience and subjective opinion into a science rooted in fundamental engineering principles and process integration. Step-by-step procedures are presented that are widely applicable to the chemical, petrochemical, petroleum, pharmaceutical, food, and metals industries.
Various levels of sophistication ranging from graphical methods to algebraic procedures and mathematical optimization, numerous applications and case studies, and integrated software for optimizing waste recovery systems make
Pollution Prevention through Process Integration: Systematic Design Tools a must read for a wide spectrum of practicing engineers, environmental scientists, plant managers, advanced undergraduate and graduate students, and researchers in the areas of pollution prevention andprocess integration.

This is a nicely written book. It strikes the right
balance between fundamentals and applications.
The book also describes a "big-picture" approach
to optimising the flow of mass and energy in the process.
I highly recommend it for process engineers.

Book Description
James W. Huston takes the hottest issue of our time -- the War on Terrorism -- and explores it with a compelling, stay-up-late thriller filled with high-stakes courtroom drama, white-knuckle in-the-cockpit flying, and the shadowy world of American Special Forces operations.
Lieutenant Kent "Rat" Rathman is back. In the middle of the desert, in the dead of night, Lieutenant Rathman parachutes with his Special Forces team into Sudan, where an arms merchant is selling weapons to Wahamed Duar, the world's most wanted man in the ongoing War on Terrorism. Duar escapes, but a key member of his organization is captured. Determined to find Duar, Rat uses questionable means of persuasion to uncover his whereabouts and the information leads to his capture. But the man he brutally interrogated later dies as a result on a U.S. Navy ship.
Washington is thrilled with Duar's capture, but a slick European lawyer with the International Criminal Court asserts that Rat violated international law and fundamental human rights. The Secretary of Defense sees an opportunity to gain political ground against his rival in the National Security Agency by taking her friend Rat down a notch; he decides to throw Rat to the wolves. Rat is arrested and put on trial for torturing a prisoner and violating the Geneva Convention. As he goes on trial for war crimes, Wahamed Duar begins his own trial, the first major tribunal conducted by the military to take place aboard the USS Belleau Wood. Duar may be a prisoner, but he still has big plans. According to the National Security Agency, his network appears to be involved in an attempt to gather radioactive cores from abandoned Russian nuclear generators for use in a dirty bomb.
As the parallel trials begin to boil, Duar's men prepare to strike. But is it Duar who is actually on trial? And who is gathering abandoned nuclear cores in the Georgian Republic? Only Rat can put the pieces together, but can he protect the United States from the impending attack while defending himself in a secret courtroom on the top floor of the Department of Justice?
Download Description
Lieutenant Kent "Rat" Rathman has one mission: to find Wahamed Duar, the world's most wanted terrorist. But when his capture-tactics are questioned, Rat's put on trial for war crimes. Meanwhile, Duar may be a prisoner, but he still has big plans. Can Rat protect the United States while defending himself?
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful, fast paced read.......2006-05-30
As a Tom Clancy, David Baldacci fan, I thought this book was a great read...fast paced, never bogged down in facts, but always giving all the information. You'll be pulling for Rat all the way...
A big Rah-Rah for America!.......2005-10-19
If you are sick and tired of watching the news media portraying our armed forces as a failure, then this book is a welcome tidbit of entertainment! How refreshing to see the excellence of our special forces portrayed as honorable and victorious! It's a real page turner, and not only do the terrorists take it on the chin, so do the liberal morons who defend them under the premise of 'human rights'. This is the best espionage thriller I've read in a while. I loved every last page!
I'm not sure how Huston does it.............2005-08-12
But he keeps me hooked once I've started reading one of his books. I can't explain it. Some of his writing seems amatuerish, but he keeps a brisk pace and does well at showing all sides of legal issues. This book is no exception.
Ever heard of 18 USC 2340A, Huston?.......2005-04-09
It's been said that Tom Clancy's books would give future readers a view of what the world was like during the Cold War; this one will too, and those future readers will say "What were these people smoking back then!?"
This is just every single fever-induced OxyContin-fueled delusion that the right wing has dreamed up in the past three years wrapped up in one single book. The country finally gets around to sending an enemy combatant before those vaunted military tribunals we were promised back in 2002, and the first thing the "good guys" in here wail about is "Criminals get to break the law all the time; why can't we?" It never occurs to anyone that torture is impractical (even the CIA learned during Vietnam that it never got any good information because the subject will say what you want to hear and not what you want to know--including telling plausible-sounding lies--just to make the pain stop) but also illegal; you'd think a lawyer like Huston would've read United States Code at some point. And what's the big threat weapon the evildoers have concocted? Why, the dirty bomb, the so-called "poor man's nuke" which even Fox News has said is about as viable as a STAR TREK photon torpedo.
Whomever said that Huston is better than Clancy is hallucinating.
Great Read!!!!.......2004-08-24
James W. Huston broke onto the scene with a pair of spectacular books: BALANCE OF POWER and THE PRICE OF POWER. Mr. Huston deftly combined weighty legal issues with exciting action.
SECRET JUSTICE proves that he still has the touch. Special Forces Soldeir Kent "Rat" Rathman gets the job done in capturing an OBL like terrorist. The messy business of fighting terrorism comes down to killing people and this is never clean or as simple as it looks on TV.
Rathman brings home his man, but a second terrorist dies and the attending doctor decides the man was tortured. He files a brief with the world court, turning the tables on Rathman where the hero becomes the goat.
This nightmare scenario is all too possible in the politically correct/internationalist foreign policy promulgated by short sighted politicians.
No spoilers in this excellent and important book.

Book Description
Britain’s supremacy in the nineteenth century depended in large part on its vast deposits of coal. This coal not only powered steam engines in factories, ships, and railway locomotives but also warmed homes and cooked food. As coal consumption skyrocketed, the air in Britain’s cities and towns became filled with ever-greater and denser clouds of smoke. In this far-reaching study, Peter Thorsheim explains that, for much of the nineteenth century, few people in Britain even considered coal smoke to be pollution. To them, pollution meant miasma: invisible gases generated by decomposing plant and animal matter. Far from viewing coal smoke as pollution, most people considered smoke to be a valuable disinfectant, for its carbon and sulfur were thought capable of rendering miasma harmless. Inventing Pollution examines the radically new understanding of pollution that emerged in the late nineteenth century, one that centered not on organic decay but on coal combustion. This change, as Peter Thorsheim argues, gave birth to the smoke-abatement movement and to new ways of thinking about the relationships among humanity, technology, and the environment.
