    Book Description

As human threats to the Earth's biota span unprecedented temporal and spatial scales, it has become urgent to integrate currently disparate areas of conservation biology into a unified framework. Combining conservation genetics, demography, and ecology, this book presents an integrative approach to managing species as well as ecological and evolutionary processes. The contributions are intended for students, professionals, and researchers in conservation biology, ecology, genetics, and evolution.

    Book Description

This important book provides a thorough understanding of the genetic basis of biological problems in conservation. Conservation and the Genetics of Populations gives a comprehensive overview of the essential background, concepts, and tools needed to understand how genetic information can be used to develop conservation plans for species threatened with extinction.Loss of biodiversity is among the greatest problems facing the world today, but thanks to new molecular technologies, statistical methods, and computer programs, genetic theories and methods are becoming increasingly useful in the conservation of biological diversity. Using a balance of data and theory, and basic and applied research, Conservation and the Genetics of Populations examines genetic and phenotypic variation in natural populations, the principles and mechanisms of evolutionary change, the interpretation of genetic data from natural populations, and how this may be applied to conservation. The book includes examples from both plants and animals, as well as from natural and captive populations.Written in an accessible style, each chapter includes discussion questions and problems to aid understanding, and also features a Guest Box authored by leading people in the field. An associated website (www.blackwellpublishing.com/allendorf) contains solutions to questions, example data sets, and software programs to illustrate population genetic processes and methods of data analysis. This book is essential reading for advanced undergraduate and graduate students of conservation genetics, natural resource management, and conservation biology, as well as professional conservation biologists working for wildlife and habitat management agencies.

The biological diversity of our planet is being depleted due to the direct and indirect consequences of human activity. As the size of animal and plant populations decrease, loss of genetic diversity reduces their ability to adapt to changes in the environment, with inbreeding depression an inevitable consequence for many species. This textbook provides a clear and comprehensive introduction to the importance of genetic studies in conservation. Book Description

This first volume in the series provides a detailed treatment in ecotoxicology and stresses why genetics is important in understanding if and how chemical contaminants affect populations. Written by an array of international contributors from various fields covering mammals, invertebrates, fish, plants, as well as molecular ecotoxicology, this book considers both ecological/evolutionary consequences and practical implications of the interplay between chemical toxicants and the genetic population. In broadening the understanding of ecological response, this resource ranges from molecular to classical genetics, from plant to animal, from asexual to sexual, touching on some fundamental issues of evolutionary biology. In addition, gaps in our present understanding of genetic and ecotoxicological processes and future research directions have been identified.

            Book Description

Plants have long been genetically modified through crossbreeding and other basic agricultural techniques to make crops more resilient, nutritious, and profitable. In recent decades, however, advances in genetic engineering--including the ability to blend genetic material from animals with that of plants--have allowed farmers to grow crops that resist insect pests, weeds, viruses, and drought; provide increased iron or beta carotene; deliver vaccines and antibodies; reduce common allergens and pollutants; and augment marketable qualities such as delayed ripening. The complicated scientific, environmental, legal, cultural, and ethical issues surrounding these crops are being hotly debated all over the world. In Seeds for the Future, an internationally respected molecular geneticist and food researcher, Jennifer A. Thomson, describes how these crops are developed, distributed, and regulated.

            Book Description

Conservation of Wildlife Populations provides an accessible introduction to the most relevant concepts and principles for solving real-world management problems in wildlife and conservation biology. Bringing together insights from traditionally disparate disciplines, the book shows how population biology addresses important questions involving the harvest, monitoring, and conservation of wildlife populations. The most up-to-date approaches for assessing factors that affect both population growth and interactions with other species are covered in detail, including predation, genetic changes, harvest, introduced species, viability analysis, and habitat loss and fragmentation.

Conservation of Wildlife Populations is an essential guide for undergraduates and postgraduate students of wildlife biology, conservation biology, ecology, and environmental studies; and will be invaluable for practising managers requiring an up-to-date assessment of how population biology can be applied to wildlife conservation and management.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the practicing or developing wildlife/conservation biologist.......2007-08-15

As a practicing wildlife biologist for 40 years, I found this new text to be an excellent review of the key elements of population biology that are pertinent to wildlife management and conservation. Mills cogently discusses numerous new issues in population biology that have developed since I completed my academic studies (such as climate change) and updates long-known issues (like predator-prey relationships) with new studies and thinking. The boxes describing real-world examples of the issues described in the text are very helpful. This books fills a needed gap between traditionally-oriented texts and practical applications. It would be an excellent text for intermediate-level wildlife biology or conservation biology courses and would be an important addition to the shelves of any biologist working to resolve conservation problems in the real world where wildlife and people interact.

                  Book Description

The unique treatise of Yuri P. Altukhov is based on several decades of research on natural communities, modelling them in experiments and with computer analysis. Essential features of species population structure, such as genetic population subdivision, hierarchical systemic organization, unrandom structure of gene migration, as well as factors and conditions of genetic stability of populations are revealed. Elucidating principles of stabilization of gene pools of agricultural animals and plants, the author discusses a strategy of conservation and sustainable management of natural gene pool resources. He considers the specificity of genetic processes in modern human populations and presents a new view on genetic mechanisms of speciation. New evidence is given for the adaptive value of molecular polymorphism in populations. The hypothesis of optimal genetic diversity of populations as the most important condition of their stable reproduction in generations and the principles of rational interaction of human with nature are treated in detail.
