Customer Reviews:
Nothing particularly new from previous books.......2007-10-14
A friend loaned me Loren Pope's previous two books. I read them and decided I would like to see what Pope has to say in 2007. Well, nothing particularly different from the other two books. I didn't need to purchase this book. The one thing this book does do differently is give a more thorough description of the 40 recommended schools. Loren Pope's books are an excellent resource when beginning the college search. i wish i had read her books before sending my oldest daughter to college.
Fiske is better.......2007-09-14
I ordered this one with the Fiske and Ivy League titles. This one ranks at the bottom. Information contained inside not as detailed and left us with with college admission questions. Check it out for yourself at a bookstore before you make your purchase here.
This WILL change the way you think about colleges........2007-08-04
This book is a must for anyone looking at colleges. After reading another Pope book "Looking Beyond the Ivy League...," I was already leaning away from any large colleges. I then read "The Gatekeepers" which was fascinating, but leaves one with the feeling that they should be grateful if a college accepts them.
Colleges That Change Lives reminds us that WE are the customer. WE are choosing the school and we should do it by keeping in mind that our children's education is more important than being able to say our child went to Harvard, Yale, etc. There are schools that welcome our children. Why should we put our children through the stress of applying somewhere they are not likely to get in, where they are not likely to get the close attention most of us need to learn better?
The one thing that stands out in my mind about the highly-selective, well-known schools after reading this book is that we assume the colleges are good (and best for our child) based on the kind of students they accept.
The results are another thing. We, as consumers, assume that if the "best" students get in to those schools, they automatically do well and are assured a successful future. What do we base that on? Assumptions aren't enough.
Read this book.
Go ahead - get off the prestige merry-go-round.......2007-06-23
This is a great book. Forget about all you think you know about colleges - it's 99% myth anyway. Learn about some excellent schools (many of which will give you great financial aid) that you might not have thought about.
My son attends one of these schools (Denison U) and it has been fabulous. In addition to very personal attention, accessible profs, small classes, friendly kids, and a really beautiful campus, they gave him an extraordinary scholarship and he was able to do a paid research internship his second year. In spite of having been accepted at much better known (and higher "ranked") schools, he has never looked back.
Broaden your search and start here.
Be sure to check financial solvency of schools!!.......2007-06-22
The book was very interesting and a great guide, we thought. My son chose to attend Antioch College based on the wonderful reviews and his own feelings after visiting the school. The Board of Trustees voted just last week to CLOSE the school July, 2008. Hence, he is looking for another school as I write. I am a more than a little concerned about using this guide again!

This book is a winner.......2007-09-11
This book gives the administrator and anyone who supports the teachers in a school some great things to think about and ways to help the teachers on a day to day basis.
An Educator's Review.......2007-05-06
I had the honor to see Ms. Connors speak at a teacher conference this past week. I was feeling a bit jaded over the profession of teaching after completing my second year of teaching and after completing a research study proposal on the sad state of teacher retention due to low administrative support. I was at an oh-too-typical low point...
Ms. Connors' words (both in spoken and written form--I flew through her book after listening to her speech) really hit home. This is a book that every teacher and every administrator should read. It gives simple solutions that could and would make a big impact upon the current state of education today. I encourage every person involved in teaching students to read this book and think about the roles they currently play and the role they could play. THANK-YOU MS. CONNORS for humorously yet seriously pointing out both the problem and the necessary solutions.
thanks for a wonderful job.......2006-03-13

SUPER-DOOPER!!!!.......2005-11-12
I was flabbergasted when Neila Connors and my principal casually walked into my classroom today (11/11/2005). Her personality is as charming as her book. As a veteran, "rogue" teacher for the past three decades, I completely understand what she means by: "If You Don't Feed the Teachers, They Eat the Students." Not only do I believe that literally administrators must "break bread" with teachers, but also, they must give them the positive psychological strokes. Neila Connors has all the necessary "how-to's" in her book. It is a MUST read book!!!

Book Description
"Bonnie Davisâs book illustrates the cultural competencies that educators need to understand when trying to reduce the achievement gap."
-Charles Rankin, Director
Midwest Equity Assistance Center
"The examples in the book are wonderful. I obtained a lot of ideas that I can share with preservice and inservice teachers as well as administrators. Reading this book will give educators the opportunity to gather information, reflect, and see ways to change their classrooms to reach all learners."
-Rosalind Pijeaux Hale, Professor
Division of Education, Xavier University of Louisiana
Todayâs teacher faces the challenge of reaching culturally and ethnically diverse students.
The children in Americaâs classrooms are changing in complexion and complexity, making teaching students with diverse backgrounds one of the greatest challenges youâll face. Administrators are also under pressure to "close the achievement gap" between White and Asian students and their racial and ethnically diverse counterparts.
So how do you make sure all of your students learn, when nearly 40% of U.S. citizens are racial or ethnic minorities, who may "see" the world through a completely different cultural "lens" than you do? This reflective workbook for reaching and teaching students of varied backgrounds offers successful strategies for all subjects and grade levels.
Using this practical handbook, you will learn:
- How to first recognize oneâs own culture to understand needs of diverse learners
- How to examine racism and its impact
- Strategies for establishing a school climate for teaching diverse learners
- Research-based instructional strategies to implement across the disciplines
Using her expertise and success in training hundreds of teachers, Bonnie Davis created this interactive workbook to help new and experienced teachers find better ways of teaching their students.

Practical Strategies for the Multicultural Classroom.......2006-04-25
Like so many good how-to books, _How to Teach Students Who Don't Look Like You: Culturally Relevant Teaching Strategies_ delivers more than it promises. While it does indeed include many strategies for teaching students whose background and culture differ from the teacher's, many of the strategies -- such as building relationships with students and creating an environment where students interact positively with each other -- are beneficial in *any* classroom.
Author Bonnie M. Davis has given us something all too rare: a book that is thoroughly researched (with a bibliography of 8 1/2 pages) yet easily readable. No doubt this follows naturally from Davis's own experience: Her Ph.D. in English is complemented by thirty-seven years teaching in a variety of classrooms.
_How to Teach Students Who Don't Look Like You_ is a valuable resource for any teacher. It provides opportunities for readers to reflect and respond, to examine their own thoughts and feelings, to set goals. The book can be used by one person, by a school group for professional development, or by a class of preservice teachers. In the Facilitator's Guide at the end of the book Davis suggests particular chapters that would be appropriate for 60- or 90-minute workshops with various groups. Using the book with a group (even a group of two) including people from different cultures adds a new dimension to the study.
Davis gently leads her audience, first inviting readers to examine themselves and their own culture. Once we recognize that we look at the world through a "unique lens," we are more likely to recognize that others do, too. The better we understand people's culture, the better we can understand and relate to (and teach) them.
Davis includes many practical, concrete suggestions for valuing other cultures. She challenges educators to consider how far into their school students must walk before they find someone who "looks like them" or find other evidence of their culture. If a student is not validated by his or her academic environment, is it realistic to expect that student to succeed academically?
About one third of _How to Teach Students Who Don't Look Like You_ includes specific teaching strategies, indicating appropriate levels and subjects for each. Davis devotes several chapters to the development of literacy skills, collaborative projects, and multidisciplinary experiences.
_How to Teach Students Who Don't Look Like You_ is likely to encourage and inspire teachers who are frustrated or overwhelmed. Its practical, concrete approach provides educators with suggestions they can implement immediately so that they begin to see a difference in their students.
A singularly valuable resource especially for teachers struggling to close "achievement gaps" in the classroom.......2006-03-06
Written by a professional who has successfully trained hundreds of teachers, Bonnie Davis' How To Teach Students Who Don't Look Like You: Culturally Relevant Teaching Strategies is a straightforward guide especially for schoolteachers instructing classes with students whose ethnic and cultural background may predispose them to see the world in an entirely different way. Chapters cover how improve one's background knowledge about different cultures and learning styles, how to create an environment that supports diverse learners, researched-based teaching strategies including how to inspire a love of reading and writing in diverse learners, and much more. Written in plain terms, often concentrating its key ideas into easy-to-follow bullet points, How to Teach Students Who Don't Look Like You is a singularly valuable resource especially for teachers struggling to close "achievement gaps" in the classroom.
Amazingly helpful resource for educators!.......2006-02-17
This collection of things to do to promote cultural understanding within oneself and inclusion in the classroom is essential for every teacher's library, teacher education classes, and for all educators interested in preparing our children for a diverse universe. Filled with practical suggestions, intrasprective honesty and sensivity to a wealth of differences, this could be a text for methods classes dealing with ways to create safe classroom environments, as well as culturally proficient students living in our multicultural world.

Students' Guide to Colleges: The Definitive Guide to America's Top 100 SchoolsWritten by the Real Experts--the Students Who Attend Them
ASIN: 0140296166
Release Date: 2000-08-08 |
Book Description
In this revised and expanded guide, College Placement Bureau Director Loren Pope profiles forty colleges that excel at developing potential, values, initiative, and risk--taking in a wide range of students. This new edition includes a revised group of colleges and for the first time addresses the issues of home schooling, learning disabilities, and single--sex education. Pope encourages students to be hard--nosed consumers when visiting colleges, and shows how the college experience can enrich every young person's life, whether they are "A," "B," or "C" students.
Included in the profiles are:
Evaluations of each school's program and "personality"
Interviews with undergraduates, professors, and deans
Information on what happens to the graduates and what they think of their college experience.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful antidote for those pre-college jitters.......2007-07-19
It is so difficult not to get trapped into the "name-dropping" college game. This book not only introduces you to 40 colleges you may not have heard of, it helps you realize that looking at any college with fresh eyes is the key to the application process. By discussing the salient points that make each listed college noteworthy, Pope helps to outline experiences we may have never considered that would make a college great.
Each student has a unique learning style and personality. Pope futher delves into why these mostly smaller colleges can tap into what each student needs, to help them achieve their best during the college experience. With college costs escalating rapidly, choosing a college that will help each student flourish becomes even more critical. This book will help parents and students more effectively outline what they need to find in a college.
Further, I was impressed that his list included many different types of colleges - from one whose courses consist only of classic books, to those that cater to the outdoor student - which helped me to see that any college bound student should be able to find a college that fits.
I would highly recommend this book to any high school student and their parents.
Good, BUT...............2007-05-04
Why are there no entries for the West? Could the author seriously not find any California or Arizona institution that meets the criteria? Besides that, this revised edition like others have stated seems repetative. Let's have a new version, hmmm? This one is 7 years old now, I think it's time.
On the positive side, it is great to know the truth about highly regarded institutions such as Harvard. Our children all aspire to Universities such as these because it's such a long standing myth that you will be among the best and be taught by the best and that a degree from such a place virtually guarantees your success. I would never have imagined my daughter might be taught by a teacher's assistant who barely speaks English or lectured to until she falls into a boredom induced coma. I hope we can find her a school with community spirit that will inspire her!
colleges that change lives.......2007-02-20
if you know someone making a decision on where to go to college, please buy them this book. it's a critical decision and there's not a book on the market that will help more with that big decision. the focus is on liberal arts colleges around the country that do great work turning above average students into excellent, independent learners, citizens, contributors. if you are looking for a "name" college, something your identity can attach itself too, then this book may be a disappointment. but then again, it may change your life by having you think more carefully about what is really important about your development those 4-5 years after high school.
Colleges That Change Lives: 40 Schools You Should Know About Even If You're Not a Straight-A Student.......2007-01-29
I am a High School Counselor and I have used this book several times. It is good to have a book that is not for the Straight-A Student
Transformational College Experiences.......2006-09-04
Loren's book is a fantastic review of what lies beyond the Ivy League. As a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Business School, I utilized my education to author The Interview Survival Kit and I have nothing but praise for what my undergrad and graduate experiences provided me. However, college applicants should know that finding the right college is about much more than finding the right "name" - many schools will provide students with powerful, transformational experiences that encourage personal, academic and professional growth. A fantastic book.

This book provided a great deal of information and ideas to draw from. I enjoyed that I could read it quickly. I was able to apply some of the ideas or variations of them at work !
Changing the way you look at work.......2001-12-29
Barbara Glantz has written a life altering book--at least a life at the workplace altering book. It is easy to read and filled with hundreds of big and little things that can change the way you spend 40 hours a week. Very positive, super ideas.
There are better books on the topic..........2001-01-07
This book is just okay. There are a lot of examples of how to improve morale at work, but the writing isn't that great, and the book isn't very well organized. There are much better books on the topic...try Managing to Have Fun by Matt Weinstein or 1001 Ways to Energize Employees by Bob Nelson.

Fans of Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle's Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? and Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? will be delighted to see another title in this lilting call and response series. Much like their earlier picture books, Panda Bear features a string of fine feathered (and furry and scaly) friends watching over each other. In this book, however, all the animals are endangered, from a swinging spider monkey to a strutting macaroni penguin (kids will get a kick out of that name!) to a splashing sea lion. Carle's trademark tissue paper collages will be as familiar--and welcome--as the text ("Whooping Crane, Whooping Crane, what do you see?" "I see a black panther strolling by me."); young readers will quickly get the hang of the rhythm and join right in. The book concludes on a hopeful note, with a dreaming child seeing the ten f! eatured animals "all wild and free--/ that's what I see!" Martin includes a note on endangered species that may spark concern and interest in older readers--our hope for these disappearing creatures. (Ages 3 to 8) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
Thirty-five years after their first groundbreaking collaboration, the creators of Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? and Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? reunite to address the important topic of animal conservation. A Bald Eagle soars, a Spider Monkey swings, a Macaroni Penguin struts, and a Red Wolf sneaks through Bill Martin Jr's rhythmic text and Eric Carle's vibrant images, and all are watched over by our best hope for the future-a dreaming child.
Customer Reviews:
Exciting new spin on Brown Bear, Brown Bear.......2007-10-03
This book follows the same pattern as the classic Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? but with an exciting new spin -- exotic, endangered animals. It also has a delightful surprise ending that makes it perfect for a bedtime story.
-Sherry North, author, Because You Are My Baby
Sorta Weird.......2007-09-11
My 2-year old twins like this book because they like to see the animals, but I think they'd get more out of it if more mainstream animals were used. I think they're a little thrown by animals like "macaroni penguin" - sounds like food to them. The dreaming child part is weird looking too.
I think it's great to use endangered animals, although my kids aren't exactly as concerned about animal endangerment as I am. It's not a bad book or anything, but honestly, if I had read it in a bookstore, I wouldn't have bought it.
There is hope!.......2007-08-19
My son loves Eric Carle books, and this is our most recent addition to his collection. I just caught on to the fact that all of the animals are endangered, but I think it's so cool that one of them isn't anymore! The bald eagle was recently taken off the endangered species list. I think that gives us (and especially kids) hope that more of those animals can come off that list, and maybe even in their lifetime.
Everyone should have this book.......2007-06-16
In a world of highways, malls, highrises, greed and land excavation, it's good to find a book that dares to dream of thick forests, lush jungles and untouched oceans where wonderful creatures can thrive. This is my favorite of all the "bear" books. It's statement is strong and I can't wait until my 16 month old daughter can recognize it.
I should like this one, but..........2007-03-07
I oughta like it, I want to like it, but it just left me flat. More to the point, it left my kids flat. The two stars I gave this were for the illustrations -- they are really cool, as you'd expect with Eric Carle. Normally, you can't go wrong with Bill Martin, but I guess everybody has their bad days. The language doesn't flow as well as the other bear books, and that makes it a little awkward for reading aloud. We have Brown Bear, Brown Bear and Polar Bear, Polar Bear, and both are big favorites with the under-3 set around our house. Panda Bear just doesn't make the grade.

Neat but can be better.......2006-03-21
I bought this book based on the great reviews here, and have not been disappointed. That said, there are a few deficiencies that drove me back to the web for more information and hence this review.
There is very little information about contemporary brands and their products that can be used to treat fish diseases. Using the book, one can easily diagnose pop-eye (which I was combating in my prize altum angels). But the suggestions are not terribly helpful in finding the right product to treat this affliction. For example, there are 3 or more different drugs under the Mardel brand that all claim to treat pop-eye. Some target gram-positive bacteria, some target gram-negative bacteria, and some are broad-spectrum antibiotics. At the same time, some can be simultaneouly administered with other treatments, some cannot. And so on. It would have been helpful if the book had helped me sort these details out (which I eventually did) and if it had suggested possible courses of action. Even something that lists all common antibiotics and adds a classification chart to go with them will address this concern.
And as one reviewer pointed out, some of the suggestions are beyond the scope of the hobbyist. But let this not detract you from purchasing a guide that will save you time and help you narrow your diagnosis.
If you have fish this book is a MUST HAVE.......2006-02-08
I have Aquarium books coming out of my ears. In my quest for knowledge on how to care and treat my freshwater fish, I have purchased books, but most left a lot of my questions unanswered, or were vague on discriptions of fish diseases and/or how to treat. This is by far the best all around book for the Aquarium Hobby enthusiast. It has everything you need to know about aquarium fish, their environment, disease and prevention. The pictures of diseased fish help you pin point the proper ailment, bacteria, and cure. I give this book 5+ stars and highly recommend it to anyone who has aquarium fish.
a MUST have for any budding or old hat Aquarist.......2004-10-25
This book is amazing! I absolutly recomend it to everyone I've talked to. Not only does it use casual scientific terms but it does also explain them for anyone that doesn't have a BSc. Great information not only on fish disease, but on maintaining a properly balanced aquarium & preventing diseases from occuring in the first place.
Personally I think it should be a manditory buy with ever first-fish purchase.
For those who keep fish as pets.......2004-06-28
The fish hobby is made up of two different types of people. Some hobbyists do not really bother to understand their fish, they simply buy replacements when the current ones die. The second type of fish-keeper wants to know as much information as he or she can on the types of fishes they keep. This book would be of most value to the second type.
Sometimes, we mistakenly assume that fish are fragile and that there is simply no way to maintain them at optimum health. But that is not the case. Most fish are quite hardy. They can easily be maintained in the home aquarium if attention is given to their particular needs. Even so, from time to time, our fishes do get sick despite of our care. This book will help you diagnose some of the more common diseases that afflict fishes, as well as some possible remedies.
Some of the procedures in the textbook are simply not feasible for the average aquarists. Most of us do not have access to a laboratory. However, there is enough solutions in the book that are easy enough to follow. I highly recommend this book.
All aspects of health care for all types of fishes.......2004-04-03
Dr. Chris Andrews, et.al.'s Manual Of Fish Health is a basic guide to providing a healthy aquarium environment and should be a part of any fish owner's home collection. It covers all aspects of health care for all types of fishes, both freshwater and marine, and cover pond as well as aquarium environments. Add plenty of charts and color photos and you have a truly comprehensive reference.

Sure, many of us in this modern world are cynical. The most cynical may even suspect that the news is manipulated and massaged by sponsors, that corporations act in their best interests, that political campaigns are determined not by votes, but by bucks, and that we don't get "all the news that's fit to print" but instead, "all the news that gets the ink". But even the most media-savvy amongst you will be awed by the behind-the-scenes descriptions of the Public Relations industry in action so masterfully described in this book. If you want your eyes to be opened, open them upon the pages of this book. (But remember: there are some very important people counting on you, and they really would prefer that you didn't ever hear about this book, much less buy it.)
Book Description
Common Courage's number one seller blows the lid off of today's multi-billion-dollar propaganda-for-hire PR industry, revealing how public relations wizards concoct and spin the news, organize phony "grassroots" front groups, spy on citizens and conspire with lobbyists and politicians.

Lies, damn lies, and PR.......2006-11-25
It's hard to be an idealist in an age of corporate spin, where everything bad is now good for you. Fortunately for the public at large, John Stauber and Sheldon Rampton have written a meticulously researched, hard-hitting, cynical look at the PR (public relations) industry and how its influence sometimes works against the public good. I found myself particularly surprised at the duplicity utilized by The Body Shop (a store I used to frequent), as well as other notable American corporations. I also highly recommend their other book, "Trust Us, We're Experts!"
Beware of Experts -- Follow the Money .......2005-07-02
Once again, John Stauber has written a book that tells it like it is, and this one ought to be a bestseller. Readers who can accept these truths may also want to read a couple highly detailed yet fascinating exposes of toxic sludge that is supposed to be good for us. First, "Fluoride Deception" by Christopher Bryson. Yup, that fluoride in your water and toothpaste is a poisonous wasteproduct turned to profit through shrewd public relations strategies. Secondly, read "The Whole Soy Story" by Kaayla Daniel. This is even more of a shocker. It's on how we've all been sold on the idea that soy is good for us. Did you know that soy protein and lecithin are waste products -- toxic and sludgy leftovers from vegetable oil and margarine making that the soy industry decided to make profitable? Because no one other than a few vegetarians and hippies wanted to eat that toxic sludge, we all had to be manipulated into believing that they are good for us. And now soy's in so many foods that it's hard to escape it. Thanks to John Stauber's books including "Trust Us, We're Experts,"I'm wary of experts and now know enough to follow the money.
This book is phenomenal.........2004-10-03
In addition to the fact that this book reads like a thriller, the content and specific examples that are used in this book are so eye opening that it might make you depressed or even nauseated.
Americans are flooded with a propaganda campaign so efficiant that it would make the NAZIs jealous. This book expalins in vivid detail the actual manipulation tactics that are used by the energy, pharmacuetical and tobbaco industries (among others) to blind us into submission and hypnotize us into believing their products are not only safe but are intimately tied to your youth and vitality.
An earlier post for this book made the comment that the authors shouldn't explain the actual manipulation strategies, but the dangerous PR firms allready know how to use them. The rest of us should know these strategies so we can recognize their tactics when we are confronted with them.
Highly recomended book.
These Guys Are Good, and Fighting the Good Fight!.......2004-06-09
Where oh where do I begin? Toxic Sludge... takes a jaded look at the public relations industry, and exposes more than a few objectionable practices perpetrated on behalf of (mostly) corporate America's pursuit of the Almighty Buck.
I say 'mostly' because, however distressing it may be to informed and intelligent citizenship, even the United States Government and more than a few foreign regimes solicit the services of these most nefarious snake oil salesmen. Let's face it, you really do not consume the services of PR firms in order to foster good relations with your customers, you go to them when you have done something bad, and you want it covered up, or at least 'spinned' in the 'right' direction. You solicit the help of PR flacks and keep them on juicy retainers in order to look good, and not to be good. When the doo-doo hits the fan, whose a corporate ne'er do well gonna call? The PR company, that's who.
Toxic Sludge... contains twelve chapters of absorbing reading. From countermeasures directed at censoring information thoroughly in the public domain, keeping books off the bookshelves and dissenting voices from being heard, to infiltrating shoe-string activist organizations, fomenting criminal insurgency and subverting (and ultimately perverting) any and all attempts to relay the facts, the authors provide example after example of very well-financed government and corporate interests actively frustrating (and quite often foiling) intelligent and inormed democratic participation in the political and economic process. As Mark Dowie, the author of the introduction says, in an environment rife with PR, facts can not survive, nor can the truth prevail.
Some of the strategies and tactics PR firms used with giddy abandon on often unsuspecting targets truly shocked me, for many tools and tricks from the PR Playbook share an eerie resemblance to CIA methods and operations. In fact, more than a few PR players and heavy hitters get their inspiration from millitary strategists such as von Clauswitz, and cross-fertilization between PR firms and the upper levels of government and corporate America impart a uniquely acidic aggressivity and practiced slickness to their campaigns against their opponents. Some of their more colorful operations reminded me of the FBI's use, via its infamous COINTELPRO initiative, of agent provocateurs against student groups, anti-Vietnam war protestors and civil rights activists during the late sixties and early-mid-seventies. This unholy alliance between government, corporations and PR firms, combined with their incestuous linkages to the ad industry, make for one formidable and thorougly intimidating opponent.
The book contains a veritable smorgasbord of eminently quotable quotes and delightful (and very distressing) anecdotes. In this vein, my personal favorite is the story of how PT Barnum, of circus fame, got his start. He put on display an old, black slavewoman, and billed her as 'George Washington's childhood nursemaid', and get this- he claimed that she was one hundred and sixty years old. Barnum made certain that he got the woman in the news as often as he could, and it did not matter what the papers said, as long as his name was spelled right. Of course, Barnum made a killing, the woman died, an autopsy was performed for the benefit of more than a few skeptics, and gee whiz, it turned out that she could not have been more than eighty.
Barnum, of course, handled the situation like the PR pro he was. When the truth was finally revealed, he went public, and said he was shocked, truly shocked, at the way the woman had deceived him!
And that anecdote, in essence, describes the modus operandi of the PR professional. PR pros turn the truth inside out. While they greatly prefer subtlety, they will stoop to other, more brutish tactics in service of their cause. PR groups can obtain favorable coverage of their worldview, much like Barnum did, and can readily obtain the willing cooperation of government agencies, as well as current and former high ranking government officials and politicians to do their questionable bidding.
The PR firm has proven itself to be at times a sinister, vicious octopus with many tentacles in some of the most unlikely places. As such, it behooves any concerned citizen to read this book and take notice of this beast as he or she participates in the marketplace of ideas.
I have three words: beautiful, researched, moving........2004-01-15
See, long ago (how long? More than one hundred years...) advertising, and not circulation (that small fee you pay when you buy a magazine or daily newspaper) was already the number one source of income for most newspapers. Is it too difficult to predict that advertisers can exert power over publishers?
And when you learn from this book that 10 out of the top 15 Public Relations firms (already back in 1994) are owned by advertising firms, and you do the math, I believe you'll then find easy to understand why some unpleasant news don't find their way through the "free" press...
This book is extremely well researched; it pushes you to think twice at problems; it is a good handbook on how to spot deceit; it is a source of hope.
It is also somewhat scary and somewhat difficult as well (many quotations save the authors from lawsuits but slow the reading speed; there are topics on international politics; there's some reasoning about chemistry...) so I don't recommend it to the average reader (choose "Trust us, we're experts" by the same authors and "Influence" by Robert Cialdini first, then come back and dig this one).
Quotations follow:
"The radioactive waste from nuclear power plants contains the deadliest substances known. It consists mostly of spent fuel which, although it is no longer suitable for generating power, will remain radioactive and lethal for over 100,000 years."
"The business class dominates government through its ability to fund political campaigns, purchase high priced lobbysts and reward former officials with lucrative jobs."
"When an issue is actually coming up for a vote, [this direct-marketer] turns to his phone banks: 'Phones are for speed. Another advantage of phones is that it's really flexible. You test mail, get results in three weeks, and make adjustments. With phones you're on the phones today, you analyze your results, you change your script and try a new thing tomorrow. In a three-day program you can make four or five different changes, find out what's really working, what messages really motivate people, and improve your response rates'. "
Everybody hates junk mail and junk phone calls. Problem is, this stuff works...
"Every day 20 million Americans tune in and turn on to the Limbaugh talk radio show, which is aired on 650 stations across the United States. However, few people realize the degree of technologically sophisticated orchestration behind Limbaugh's power. [Someone] explained how his coalition used paid ads on the Limbaugh show to generate thousands of citizen phone calls urging legislators to kill health reform. First, Rush would hip us his 'dittohead' fans with a calculated rant against the Clinton health plan. Then during a commercial break listeners would hear a anti-health care ad and an 800 number to call for more information. Calling the number would connect them to a telemarketer, who would talk to them briefly and then 'patch them through' directly to their congressperson's office. The congressional staffers fielding the calls typically had no idea that the constituents had been primed, loaded, aimed and fired at them by radio ads on the Limbaugh show, paid by the insurance industry, with the goal of orchestrating grassroots opposition to health reform".
One wonders (might I add?) how naive and unfit for the job American congresspersons are! They just don't know a trick played on some 20 million fellow citizens!?
Do you know SLAPP lawsuits? They are Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation, their goal is to force the defendant to run up huge bills: and shut up, of course. And what happens if lawsuits fail?
"And if lawsuits fail, some anti-environmentalists urge even stronger tactics. Former Interior Secretary James Watt (who in 1996 pleaded guilty to trying to influence a Federal grand jury) told a gathering of cattlemen in June 1990, 'If the troubles from environmentalists cannot be solved in the jury box or at the ballot box, perhaps the cartridge box should be used.' ".
There are tens of quotable lines in this book, I just think those above are enough to give you some clue about its relevance.
I tried to imagine how to describe a country where less than half the citizens bother to vote, politicians get massive amounts of money from corporations (why? and what's the compensation?), consumers lemmingly follow what the media tell them. I have three words: apathy, greed, gullibility. This book is a very effective antidote.

Must Read for Anyone with a Job.......2007-08-16
This book came into my life at just the right moment. As my company thrashes through a period of reinvention, understanding what to do to take best advantage of change has been a key part of helping manage the stress of the situation. I have recommended it to every colleague who will listen and handed my copy to my division President the day after I finished reading it.
The workplace is such a fluid environment, and in the world of mergers, downsizing, reorganization and change, it is important to remember for whom you work. It is for yourself and your family first, your colleagues second, your clients third, and fourth it is for the company at the top of your embossed business card. So you had better have a plan, not just for the day when you return from lunch and there is a HR lackey standing at your desk with a pink slip and a bankers' box, but a plan for the arc of your professional career.
Companies are not people, they are run and managed by people. Understanding your position and power in your company's community is critical to being able to make the right decisions about your job. "I Didn't See It Coming" will help you to sense change before it happens and to prepare to take best advantage as the ground moves and the color of the sky goes from blue to red.
Read this book in times of quite, and re-read it when things are up in the air. I hope that the three high powered women who wrote this book are already at work on the sequel.

Love the Work You're With: Find the Job You Always Wanted Without Leaving the One You Have

Customer Reviews:
Incredibly helpful!.......2002-01-24
I was never one to put much stock in so called "self-help" books, but after picking this one up and flipping through it, I realized that I have much to learn! I couldn't put this book down. I found Miss Tracy's ideas to be powerful tools for reshaping my view of work and my role within it. The examples given are useful. The "focus" questions helped me to determine the sources of my problems at work. I credit this book with helping me to completely reverse my view of a previous job. Instead of continuing to bemoan the events and be angry, I was able to see what went wrong (with the job and myself) and finally make peace. I have no doubt that I will refer to this book again and again. I do recommend "Take This Job and Love It!", but warn any persons who tend to proofread that they will have a fine time noticing the scanner errors!
Excellent.......2001-11-06
This book has already changed my life. I saw it on a shelf the other day and after browsing a few pages, found some good stuff. Little did i know that the next day my whole job would be changed around on me, putting me in a total furious crisis. I went back to that book after work at the end of the day, and this morning I now have a lot of new options and creative approaches which may not only save my sanity, but also help me not to back myself into a corner at this typical frustrating kind of job that many have. I'm a very choosy reader, and this book is highly recommended.
