If Christian men are going to change from a pitiful, wimpy bunch of "really nice guys" to men who are made in the image of God, they must reexamine their preconceptions about who God is and recover their true "wild" hearts, writes bestselling author John Eldredge in Wild at Heart: Discovering a Life of Passion, Freedom, and Adventure. Eldredge throws down the gauntlet--men are bored; they fear risk, they refuse to pay attention to their deepest desires. He challenges Christian men to return to authentic masculinity without resorting to a "macho man" mentality. Men often seek validation in venues such as work, or in the conquest of women, Eldredge observes. He urges men to take time out and come to grips with the "secret longings" of their hearts. Although the book succeeds best in its slant toward a male audience, it also strives to help women understand the implications of authentic masculinity in their relationships with men. Eldredge frames the book around his outdoor experiences and appealing anecdotes about his family, sprinkling the text with touches of humor and overlying everything with heartfelt passion. Even as he mixes eclectic ideas about masculinity from popular movies such as Braveheart with classic words from Oswald Chambers, and lyrics from the Dixie Chicks with stories from the Bible, he points to only one answer for men searching for their true wildness of heart. Writes Eldredge, "The only way to live in this adventure ... with all its danger and unpredictability and immensely high stakes ... is in an ongoing, intimate relationship with God." --Cindy Crosby

Book Description

God designed men to be dangerous, says John Eldredge. Simply look at the dreams and desires written in the heart of every boy: To be a hero, to be a warrior, to live a life of adventure and risk. Sadly, most men abandon those dreams and desires-aided by a Christianity that feels like nothing more than pressure to be a "nice guy." It is no wonder that many men avoid church, and those who go are often passive and bored to death. In this provocative book, Eldredge gives women a look inside the true heart of a man and gives men permission to be what God designed them to be-dangerous, passionate, alive, and free.

Has some good open insights, but misses the mark as the author wants us to return to the patriarchal ways of thinking that actually hurts true masculinity.Men-The Gods of Love

5 out of 5 stars Wild at Heart Rocks.......2007-09-27

Wild at Heart rocks! Perfect view of God and men - No. A great motivator for men to develop a deep and very personal relationship with God - Yes. Having read the book a couple of times, and now having read other John Eldredge books, I can tell you that my spiritual walk with God has been completely changed in a very meaningful way. In fact 'changed' is probably a word that does not completely convey the real impact of the message on my life -- 'Warped Across the Universe' would be more descriptive.

As a few reviewers have highlighted, the book is not perfect. Nor is it the answer to every man's questions about his masculinity and how we are all formed in God's image. It simply provides a strong framework to think differently about what it means to be a man but yet a Christian.

As mentioned again by several reviewers, although the book has a little bravado here and there, it is not license to mistreat other people, especially not the women in our life's. The message is very clear. Although the God is a Warrior, He is also a compelling force who loves mankind deeply.

Bottom-line about this book is that message, can at least for some men, revolutionize their thinking about God, Church, their families and their relationships with other people. It has changed me in a personal a deep manner that this review cannot even begin to express.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Spiritual and Invigorating - Not Just For Men!.......2007-09-25

I cannot speak highly enough of this book! I learned so much from reading it--about myself, about my husband, about life! In fact, I think I'll read it AGAIN!

5 out of 5 stars Truly Transformational!!.......2007-09-18

Treasures of the Kingdom, Vol. 1

I've seen the message from this book transform not only my own life, but the lives of many, many others as well.

The Eldredges have such a wonderful way of awakening the heart to its natural hunger and thirst for God. They throw us head long into a journey of pursuing God with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength.

The pursuit results in total transformation. Mediocre religion doesn't cut it anymore. We have to have God and we have to see Him powerfully and fully integrated in our every day lives. Walking with God, hearing His voice, knowing His guidance and leading in our lives changes everything.

For true stories of lives transformed because of the power of this message as presented by the Eldredges, see the real life accounts in the Amazon book, Treasures of the Kingdom.

5 out of 5 stars Timing is everything.......2007-09-13

I actually read this book about 4 years ago and remember thinking it was pretty good, BUT for some reason I picked it up a few weeks ago and re-read it. POWERFUL insight. Then just as I was finishing the book, my Dad died. There are no coincidences. This book answered a lot of deep questions I didn't even know I had. It was a real life shaper. TO those of you who are fathers to boys,.. its a MUST READ. The authors insight is right-on and much different than what you would expect from a "Christian author". BTW, I could see why some women might have a problem understanding and accepting some of his insights. I'd say they just need to listen, observe and keep an open mind. This book can save relationships.

Book Description

Abandoning the format of workbooks-as-you-know-them, the Wild at Heart Field Manual takes men on a journey through which John Eldredge encourages them to be dangerous. 5 out of 5 stars Wild at Heart Field Manual.......2007-08-25

I purchased 4 of these books for my sons, on the recommendation of I man I work with. My oldest son said he usually doesn't like self help books, but after reading the first chapter "very intersting.....it hit home". I have promises from my other sons they will now read it. I am happy with my purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2007-01-28

This is the field manual for the book Wild At Heart. Mine is very worn from having been worked through 4 times. This is a great resource if you are working through Wild At Heart, either by yourself or in a group. It will help you really examine and work through the book.

This workbook is well laid out with lots of room for answers, and a number of little sections to help you on your journey as you work through it. Some of these supplemental sections are:
· A Break in the Clouds
· From the Map
· Warning!
· Dispatch
· Getting Your Bearings

Each chapter which parallels the book, begins with a 'Gut Reaction' - what is your first take on that chapter in the book? This helps set the bearings for where you will go in that chapter. As you work through it you will be drawn deeper and deeper into the masculine journey.

Eldredge begins each chapter with quotes that span church history and denominations. He must be one of the most widely read men I have encountered. He draws from that breadth of knowledge to show a variety of views on topics and tries to help you see where God is wanting to work in your life.

The one drawback, if you use it in conjunction with the DVD curriculum, is that the DVD does not follow the book exactly, and with 12 chapters in the book and field manual that follow each other exactly, and 8 in the DVD, it doesn't seem weighted evenly.

The Field Manual is indispensable if you are going to work through the DVDs and is a great supplement to the original book. For you, or other men in your life, this book will be a great tool on your journey to authentic Christian manhood.

5 out of 5 stars Wild at Heart.......2006-03-11

it was a great support of the book, Wild at Heart. It took the book into a deeper level.

5 out of 5 stars A whole new perspective.......2006-01-31

This book answered many questions I have had for years: about myself, about the church; about Christianity. It launched me on a search for these things that has been very enlightening. I highly recommend getting the Field Guide to Wild at Heart which will help make the things in the book a very personal experience.
Pure theolgists and members of churchs that think they have the only way will probably be very upset by this book. For those who want to open their minds and hearts, it is an unforgetable journey.

5 out of 5 stars wild at heart.......2005-10-07

I have not finished this book as I am writing this. I can say the first 40 pages are worth the purchase price. Eldredge really seems to know how a man is to relate to Jesus. Its fairly obvious he enjoys a healthy relationship with our risen savior Jesus--and shows that we all can. Read it......if you dare.

5 out of 5 stars BOOK(S) WITH A WONDERFUL PURPOSE........2007-04-13

THis work, Volume II, is like the others. A wonderful history of how it was. In this day and age of having most needs meet and something for everyone on the Wal-mart shelf, we tend to forget just what it was like in our not too distant past. These books, the Foxfire books, brings to light skills, attitudes and a way of life that is all but forgotten. This is a good thing. When a people lose their history, they lose part of their soul. As the title of this work states, Ghost Stories, Wild Plant Foods, Spinning, Weaving, Midwifing, Corn Shucking, and there is so much more. The editors have done a wonderful job. They have made a very honest effort to replicate the dialect of those places and times and I feel that this is a big part of the charm of these books. I am old enough to have known many of the kinds of folks featured in these books, being only one generation past them, and have a great appreciation for what and how they did all the little things we take so for granted now. I might also suggest that you actually try some of the things mentioned in these volumes. It will give you even more of an appreciation for what they did, and hey, who knows, the skill you develope just might come in handy one of these days! Recommend this and the other Foxfire books highly.

5 out of 5 stars Survival Guide for Hardy Individuals.......2007-03-28

Have enjoyed all the Foxfire Books for years. They are a wonderful peek into the lives of hardy people who survived without a single benefit from the U.S.Government.........and were proud of it.

1 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2006-03-15

I bought this book for my husband and he loves it! There are so many interesting facts in these books. I would suggest this book to anyone who is interested in how things were back in the "old" days. Everyone, no matter how young or old, will learn something from reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Foxfire books are excellent.......2003-07-29

Years ago we owned all the Foxfire books, and then we donated them to the library so others could glean the wisdom they had, and we have slowly begun to but copies for our home library and this is one that I wanted first. Simply because it had information on burial customs and I make plain pine burial boxes. And because it has excellent information on wild plants that are edible in the spring and we love to forage for wild plants for food like stinging nettle, fiddle fern and dandelion. The section on bee keeping is also informative. Then there is the wonderful section on midwives which is of personal interest to me, as well as the wonderful section on how to wash clothes in an iron pot, because being vagbond-homestead-mountain mode people we like good clean clothes washed in an environmentally sound manner using the least amount of soap possible.

The Foxfire series is one that comes up on various simple living, homestead, frugal websites and web boards. So I know that millions of people have over the years found the series of books to be invaluable.

5 out of 5 stars I love the series of these books.......1999-09-13

The series of Foxfire books takes you back in time when life was hard physically but simplier mentally. While reading these books I fell like I am in a time capsule being transported back in time ninety or so years. I enjoy past history and anything to do with mountain country around the Smokies. These peope lived off the land and took the time to enjoy life and their families. These books provide tips for things that are still done the same way, such as tanning hides. Norma Doyle, Florida

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This book helped me enjoy my travelling years.......2007-02-01

After College I went travelling for a few years. I'm glad I read Natalie's book, because it gave me a very simple, grounded way of writing about my experiences. I wasn't interested in mimicking 'great authors' or using high-brow literary style - but rather capturing the flavor of the moment.

She taught me about relishing and really living the small details of my life - appreciating the people and things around me. E.g. the 'what I see' exercise when I described the cafe I was sitting in, helped me get grounded and really take a good second look around me. This is so much more satisfying for a traveller than just whizzing around and superficially seeing (but not really seeing) lots of scenery.

3 out of 5 stars free your mind and your pen.......2006-03-23

I recommend this book to help get the creative juices going for writers and writers-to-be. Although the writing in the book itself is sometimes a little bit dorky or awkward, this is more than compensated by the overall rush of good suggestions and liberating writing exercises, all presented in a way that is unpretentious, confident, entertaining, and sound.

1 out of 5 stars Once again the same old same old..........2006-02-22

All you have to do is turn off your mind, relax and float downstream and you too can be a wealthy writer and go jetsetting with all your glamorous friends. Any actual writers reading this advice are probably expiring of laughter.

Being able to construct a simple sentence with proper spelling and grammar does not, in itself, make you a writer. It would seem to be a prerequisite of becoming one, but the lady who wrote this book apparently feels that it is preferable to lose control and write gibberish -- perhaps she's trying to encourage students to write the kind of garble that passes for "intelligent literature" nowadays.

Unfortunately, being told that you have the ability to write does not mean that you have the ability to write well in terms of plot, story structure, word choice and all the other elements necessary to high-quality, memorable writing (marketable or otherwise). Skip the autobiographical content; get what you can out of the guidelines.

4 out of 5 stars Authentic Strong Style.......2005-10-17

Natalie Goldberg has once again combined her very authentic writing style into a great read and helpful book. Humorous, serious, and constructive tools and tips are offered in this book. Wild Mind most certainly is on my writing's group favorite list and helpful resources. The book is divided into small chapters with mini writing practices at the end of each sections. It keeps me motivated to keep reading and writing.

The simplistic title Think Thin Be Thin doesn't really encompass the ideas laid out in this encouraging book. Rather than designing a diet and exercise plan that promises results, authors Doris Wild Helmering and Dianne Hales focus instead on the psychology behind eating, and offer 101 short suggestions for getting healthy that can accompany any plan out there.

The tips are drawn from a variety of disciplines, including Gestalt therapy, transactional awareness, compliance theory and cognitive-behavior therapy: all these sources these translate to "there's something for everyone". Old standards like keeping a food diary and finding simple ways to burn calories (like gardening or taking the stairs at work) are mixed with creative ideas like becoming your own advice columnist for a day and watching specific comedy movies that also offer encouragement for change (think Groundhog's Day). Whether you sit down and plow through the book in one sitting or pick and choose a few tips to follow for short time periods, you'll find the positive tone both relaxing and inspiring.

While the emotional and mental aspects of weight loss are the focal point, you'll also find a few tips aimed at the more practical side, like tracking your BMI (a charted is included as an appendix) and how many calories are burned by an assortment of activities. Whether it servers as a companion to a new gym membership or a refresher course in positive thinking, this book has plenty of helpful tips to keep you on track. --Jill Lightner

Book Description

If you’ve been struggling with your weight, you know how hard it can be to lose those extra pounds and keep them off. In the groundbreaking Think Thin, Be Thin, nationally prominent psychotherapist Doris Wild Helmering and award-winning health writer Dianne Hales assert that the true key to a healthy body weight is a healthy attitude toward food and exercise. Their logic is simple: Your brain ultimately controls what you eat and whether you work out. If you change the way you think, you can change the way you behave. And you can lose weight.

Using proven psychological strategies and scientifically based exercises, you will learn how to harness your thoughts to transform your behavior, body, and life. With practical advice on such troublesome issues as curbing emotional eating, motivating yourself to exercise, and overcoming diet plateaus, this book is the ideal complement to any diet and weight-loss program.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Think thin, be thin. . ........2007-05-12

The authors come across as friends more than instructors. Some information is a no-brainer, (eat less, move more) but there are some psychological "tricks" that have been very useful. There is one particular passage titled "No More Negatives" that I found very useful in the beginning. I checked this book out of the library a couple of times and decided that it would be a positive book to go back to during my weight-loss journey.

3 out of 5 stars Lots Of Techniques.......2006-06-26

The book is a quick read, has short chapters, a single principle covered in each. It's not a mental taxation, but an expanded list of items to try as psychological reminders.

This book addresses all of those aspects surrounding food outside of calories alone, beyond controlling your food. The book addresses how food (and all aspects of food) intervenes - psychologically - into the rest of your life. Therefore it addresses how your lifestyle is affected, or changing your lifestyle will change your weight. If you are not ready for change, you will not be ready for what the book presents.

The book offers a large range of "technique" for becoming less food-centric in your life. It does not, however, elaborate on moving those techniques into permanent behavior change. (It felt more like I was reading a laundry list of options rather than recipes for change.) The techniques are provided in the short chapters (and it does cover an exceptionally wide range of techniques - from the simplest pause between bites to aroma therapy) but I did feel it missed the point on elaboration. Breaking out of the short chapter mold and providing a couple of at length discussion chapters might have proven a useful idea.

The book is decidedly geared toward women (i.e. only women's body fat charts are provided, etc...).

I didn't find it life shattering, but rather a "survey" of technique - and you get to choose which of those techniques might work for you.

One EXCEPTIONAL idea that was presented was "Know Your Weights" these are your Dream, Happy, Acceptable, Disappointed, and Never-Again weights. This consciousness can help you watch yourself - stay aware of creeping instead of waiting until you get to an OH NO point again.

Although the idea was not presented I do feel that eventually you probably want to move away from scale-centered measurement, and instead rely on a mirror to tell you how you feel about the shape or your body. This is true particularly if you are increasing muscle mass. The mirror approach allows you to feel comfortable with your body type, areas you want to accentuate - something that weight charts cannot do. Scales can still serve to supplement your self-review, but eventually lose their primacy as a clear means of feedback (again particularly if your muscle mass is changing).

Overall the book has good ideas, may include some very helpful techniques for you, but is probably not a seminal source for those moving toward mental health in this area. Your arsenal would probably include other material, more discussion oriented, and likely higher on motivational inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect companion to any diet and weight-loss program.......2005-09-08

A collaborative work by psychotherapist Doris Wild Helmering and author Dianne Hales, Think Thin, Be Thin: 101 Psychological Ways To Lose Weight is the perfect companion to any diet and weight-loss program. Each of the 101 tips addresses a key aspect of human behavior - the necessity of applying one's mind to a goal to make it reality. From "No More Negatives", which warns the reader away from negative self-talk and focusing on what one can't do, to "How Were You Scripted?" which encourages the reader to think about the eating habits he or she ingrained when growing up, to "Six Ways To Keep Off Weight" which include joining a "tribe", or group of exercise and health-conscious people, finding new emotionally satisfying foods that are low in calories, and the importance of looking for joy and meaning beyond one's food life. While not a complete weight-loss program, Think Thin, Be Thin is a vital supplement for recasting one's mental focus on a thinner, healthier, and happier self.

5 out of 5 stars It Really IS All In Your Mind.......2005-07-14

I've lost more than 25 pounds in seven months using the knowledge I've gained from this book. I had just about surrendered to being fat when I passed 60 and arthritis cramped my walking regimen, but Helmering got me focused on what I needed to know about food consumption for this new phase of life. I plan to lose ten more pounds to return to my ideal weight. I feel armed with information and techniques and confident of the future thanks to "Think Thin, Be Thin".

5 out of 5 stars IT WORKS!.......2005-04-14

I've become an expert at diets, healthy and unhealthy. I've learned how to diet in a healthy manner. I know how to count calories; I don't really have to look to know how much fat, protein, or carbs are in a given product. I've been burning at least 3500 calories per week for years and gaining fat. What I did not have was willpower. I could not walk past a donut, cookie, birthday cake, ice cream or any of that. Now I can because of this book. I read a chapter every day and internalize the lessons...not 100% but as they fit me. I've lost 5 pounds. I left a supper birthday party and took in less than 500 calories of relatively healthy food. I passed up ice cream and cake. I've learned it's all in your head. The book has helped me train my subconscious mind to eat properly. I really believe that I'm going to reach my goals because of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding adventure / hunting book.......2007-10-17

Absolutely first-rate--hard to put down once I started it. Very well written, thoroughly entertaining. Rocky brings out the excitement of each hunt--each experience in a riveting fashion. Simply one of the best books I've read on experiencing the wilds of Alaska. Highly recommended!!!

1 out of 5 stars poorly written book about some amazing adventures.......2007-10-13

My father gave me this book for my birthday. He absolutely loved it. I found it to be a weakly written account of some pretty amazing adventures. There is no doubt that Rocky Mcelveen has lived incredible stories and has had some very authentic faith experiences. His "rough-around-the-edges" approach seems to appeal to many but its not my favorite writing style. I found that he reinforces the stereotype of an exploitive, narrow-minded, bragging Christian male.

I was bothered by his comments on women and his sense of their place in the world. I disliked his perspectives on the animals he hunts and encounters on his trips. He very much sees them as trophies (or nusances that frustrate his hunting and fishing) and something that is meant to be hung on a wall and measured for the Boone and Crocket record book . I got the sense that he does not respect them as living, breathing creatures whose lives he and his clients end when they pull the trigger. As a trained Fish and Wildlife Technician, I felt that his facts about wildlife could have done with more in-depth research prior to publishing. Many of them are exaggerated or simply false.

Worst of all, his perspectives on faith (re: comments about tithing; calling God names like "the Big Pilot"; comments about some people having an "in" with God; etc) reinforced for me the worst aspects of North American Christian faith. I am a follower of Christ but, most of his comments do not represent my own thoughts on what it means to be "Christian." Overall, his attitude and world-view could use more thoughtful reflection.

As for writing style, one of the things that frustrated me were the many times Rocky writes jokes as incidents that he has experienced. While it adds some humor I began wondering at the beginning of a new story if it were true or just another joke. It doesn't quite work as well in a book as it does with body language and the inevitable laughs when told in person.

Despite all the things that urked me, Rocky does come up with some good insights on life. I think if I had read his book 20 years ago I would have enjoyed it. I was really into sport hunting and fishing then. Today, however, I have become more connected to nature, more astonished by it and more aware of different ways of thinking about it. Rocky generally seems to see his experiences in the wilds as conquests. I'd say that my current nature experiences are more about harmony, respect and enjoying its mystery. This book simply doesn't connect with where I'm at.

My recommendation is that you put your money towards Dangerous River by R.M. Patterson or any of Sigurd Olson's books. These two authors, for me, bring a more thoughtful approach to the topics of spirituality and outdoor living. They tell the stories of adventures just as amazing as Rocky's without the annoying parts.

5 out of 5 stars What every man (and wife) needs to know about themselves.......2007-09-02

This book does not just provide great stories of adventure in Alaska's outdoors, it provides insight into every man's life - especially married men. Wives should read this book to get a peek into the "animal" they are married to.

5 out of 5 stars "Into the Wild with McElveen".......2007-08-01

This book is an adrenaline filled adventure that almost everybody would enjoy reading. The author has a gift of inserting the reader into the story as it is told; I felt that I vicariously hunted through McElveen. A real life adventure as described in the book, can cost in the ten thousands & up, therefore the story is the closest I'll ever be to Alaska with my budget. McElveen has exceeded expectations of our former President, George Bush, Sr, in the wild as I would suspect meet yours. Enjoy the Wild Outdoors!

5 out of 5 stars Almost exactly what i was looking for.......2007-03-30

A great book about adventures in the Alaska wild. I live in Alaska and found this book to be right on the money. The only thing that i didnt like about it was Rocky's (the author) constant reference to God. Every page he talked about him at least 2 or 3 times. Now whether you are religous or not, most people who purchase an adventure book want an adventure book, not a book that is half adventure and the other half feels like you are reading a bible. I am Catholic and even I found it sad that this guy gave God all the credit for his amzazing accomplishments when really most of it was because of his own extremely hard work and dedication that allowed him to become very successful. But all in all it was a great book, it decribed alaska better than any other book out there, thats why i gave it 5 stars.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Best Wolf Photography Book.......2007-03-21

As a huge wolf freak and artist, I always found it difficult to draw the beautiful bodies of wolves from tiny little pictures shoved in the corners of other books. Although the info was great, I always felt a tad sad to see such a lovely picture shrunk down. In this book, the photos are huge, and beautifuly detailed. I treasure this book and reccemend the Wolves at our Door book by Jim and Jamie Dutcher as well as their two documentaries: Living with wolves and Wolves at our Door

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-01-10

I have always loved wolves and had watched the Sawtooth pack since they were first formed. Now the originals are all gone. The pictures in the book are magnificent and tells their story.

5 out of 5 stars Kids Can Read This Book, too!.......2006-09-25

(My mommy is typing this for me but she wrote down everything I wanted to say on a piece of paper first.)

Hello. My name is Jordan Elizabeth and I am 8 years old. I really, really love wolves and I have read about 20 books for kids about wolves. Wolves are very special creatures but a lot of people don't know that. A lot of people think wolves are mean and want to hurt people but actually they don't.

Of all the books I have about wolves, "Living With Wolves" is my favorite even though it's more like an adult book. While searching for more wolf books with my mommy on her computer, I saw "Living With Wolves" on this website and wanted to say what I also think about this book because not many people wrote their thoughts here yet.

I got this book in New York City where my family flew and we went to a museum to see and meet the Dutchers. This was the greatest time of my whole life! I've never actually met a movie star before until I met Jim & Jamie. I've seen their dvds about a hundred times and I think it's so cool that they actually lived with wolves! After they were done speaking we bought this book.

The next day we got on a plane to fly home and my mom and dad let me take out the book. They didn't want me to wreck it because it is the nicest wolf book and it is very heavy with amazing pictures. On the plane I started to read the book. My mom helped me with some of the bigger words but not a lot. The pictures are really beautiful in the book and there are some of the wolf pups that are so adorable, too! In the beginning I couldn't wait to read what the Dutchers had to say and I just started reading the book all by myself. Usually I love to find all the pictures first but this time I didn't.

I think this book is great for everyone and I am writing this because the Dutchers write a good book that even kids will like and teaching us about them. My parents weren't really interested in wolves before they got me the Dutcher's dvds and now they love them, too. The book even came with a CD stuck inside that has just wolves howling and I love listening to their sounds!

So that's what I think. I hope the Dutchers can live with the wolves again sometime so I can learn more because they are kind and caring and really great teachers.

Bye.

5 out of 5 stars Living With Wolves.......2006-02-23

Absolutely awesome photography and story!
Some of the best wolf photography I have seen.
This book is very well done with the photography and the story; the vocalization CD certainly completes it. One can listen to the howls, look at the pictures, and feel like a part of this wolf family.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT book for wolf lovers.......2005-09-01

This is the best book of its type about wolves. Jim and Jamie Dutcher's photography catches the full range of experiences and emotions. The photography alone is worth 5 stars in my opinion.

I was also glad to see that half the book was NOT taken up by pictures of dead wolves and wolf pelts. The slaughter of wolves at the hands of humans NEEDS to be stopped, yet I look for books which celebrate the beauty of the LIVING wolf instead of showing page after page of dead animals. This book is a "must buy" for all wolf lovers.

Book Description

Divided into three sections, Hope, Human and Wild profiles the efforts of three caring communities to preserve wilderness and reverse environmental devastation. They include the reforestation of McKibben’s home territory, New York’s Adirondack Mountains; solving traffic and pollution problems in the densely populated Curitiba, Brazil; and how the citizens of Kerala, India have demonstrated that quality of life doesn’t depend on overconsumption of resources. This edition features a new introduction that revisits these places and explores how they’ve changed over the years.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This book changed my life.......2007-09-29

In it, there are stories about how entire communities have been positively transformed by the action of a few determined individuals. This book will have you contemplating how you can affect change in your own community, and will give you the courage to enact it.

5 out of 5 stars At Last I Get It.......2006-02-01

This book is an exploration into what's right and what's wrong with the planet and our relationship with it. It was written as a sequel to an earlier book by McKibben, "The End of Nature." In this book, McKibben starts by identifying some areas where there is hope for improvement in the environment in the future. The book is arranged in four parts. In the first part, McKibben considers examples of environmental recovery in his own region. He then turns to two parts of the world with very different local solutions to global problems. The first of these is Curataiba, Brazil, a city made famously livable by some very forward-thinking city planners. He then turns to Kerala, India, noting that a relatively high quality of life can be achieved with extremely limited resources, provided one addresses the key structural problems of society first. In the last section of the book, he reflects on his observations from the three regions.

McKibben hardly needed to look any further than his own backyard for proof that the environment can indeed bounce back to some extent from extreme abuse. His backyard in the Adirondacks is now full of trees, a condition that is now common throughout the Eastern United States. Much more common, in fact, than it was just fifty years ago. A little over a hundred years ago, most landscapes in the Northeast were treeless. The trees had been cut down to clear fields, to use for ship building and house construction, and most notably, to use for fuel. With the invention of a plow that could at last turn the thick prairie soil, many of the New England farmers pushed westward, glad to leave their cold, stony fields to grow up into forest again. But changes in fuel usage played an even larger role in the recovery of the trees. A hundred years ago, we got 90% of our energy from wood, necessitating the cutting down of millions of acres of forest per year just to keep the economy going. With the switch to petroleum-based fuels, we now rely on wood for just 10% of our energy, and as a result, the forests in the East are now thicker than they have been for over four hundred years. In tandem with the return of the trees, the wildlife are also coming back, and wild turkeys and bear sightings are now more common in this region than they have ever been since the arrival of Europeans on the continent. As petroleum fuels become more difficult and expensive to come by, we can only hope that we will stumble on a new fuel to replace oil, just as oil replaced wood.

McKibben's discussion of Curataiba is quite stimulating. He describes how ingenious local leaders made the city into a model of a livable, workable metropolis. They did this not by copying technology of developed countries, but by creating original solutions based on locally available materials and culture. Kerala also was faced with seemingly insurmountable problems of poverty, race, and class. Individual leaders in Kerala were successful in getting the community to rally around local solutions to these problems. Thus, McKibben's theme seems to be, in a world of ever-increasing globalization, where all problems are global, the solutions need to be local.

I've been wrestling with trying to understand globalization ever since the protests in Seattle. Despite reading heavily on the topic and talking to others, I just couldn't understand why the protesters made such a fuss. I even completed a discussion course on globalization offered by the Northwest Institute, and I still didn't get it. But as I read this book, the problems of an economy controlled by transnational corporations finally began to sink in. McKibben describes the shocking extent of deforestation in Maine. It just so happens that a South African company is now one of the largest owners of timber rights in the state. With a home office some 10,000 miles distant, they don't have a personal stake in what happens to the Maine environment. So millions of acres of forest in the state are being clear cut, but visitors and locals don't notice the missing trees because the companies leave 50 yard wide swathes of undisturbed forest along the roads, trails, and waterways. Along with the clear cuts comes erosion, silting of streams, and massive loss of habitat for the wildlife. After reading about Maine, I thought about a plot of land up the road that is currently being logged. Fortunately, the land up the road is owned not by a transnational corporation, but by a neighbor, who has a vital interest in seeing that the forest remains healthy throughout his logging operations; indeed, he is truly managing the forest, rather than simply cutting down trees. I now see calls for supporting the local economy rather than going with the flow of globalization in a new light-in purchasing items made in a global economy, we may unwittingly be contributing to environmental destruction on a massive scale, destruction that is magnified by the fact that the decision makers in the production process have no personal interest in the environment that they are damaging. And the ones who do have a personal interest in that environment are powerless to fight the big companies. If, on the other hand, we support local producers and local economies, we can directly influence how the producers treat the land. At the same time, the local producers have a very personal interest in not causing damage to their own homes and livelihood. Indeed, there is plenty of food for thought in this book.

4 out of 5 stars Up from poverty.......2005-04-17

Bill McKibben offers a more hopeful set of scenarios in this book, pointing to cities like Curitiba and regions like Kerala as examples of how communities can achieve sustainability and raise standards of living without big money projects. Closer to home, McKibben shows how forests are being regenerated in the Northeast allowing wolves, moose and other wild species to reinhabit this region. But, something seemed to be missing in this volume. It lacked the focus of The End of Nature and didn't seem to go very far beyond surface observations. Nonetheless, I am thankful to McKibben for drawing attention to Curitiba and Kerala, showing that in many ways the so-called Third World has achieved greater sustainability than many parts of the so-called First World, leading him to make the salient observation that maybe we should re-examine our priorities here in the United States.

4 out of 5 stars The End of Nature's Sequel.......2004-10-25

Hope, Human and Wild is a kind of sequel to The End of Nature in which Bill McKibben highlights some positive, hopeful examples of sustainable human activity. He quotes Al Gore as saying, essentially, that our environmental problems now exceed our political ability to solve them. This is a deeply disturbing statement, so McKibben profiles a pair of cities in Brazil and India where sustainability and quality of life movements have taken hold and are actually succeeding. The implications are obvious: if two Third World cities can pull this off despite long odds, both political and environmental, then why can't we?

McKibben's studies of Curitiba, Brazil, and Kerala, India are both informative and uplifting, containing concrete examples of what creative thinking and political courage can achieve. We long, then, for a chapter or so in which these examples are applied to American urban centers; we long for a roadmap of possibilities applied to our culture of greed and consumerism. We long for an idea-or even the hint of an idea-we can use to break our cycle of destructive consumption. Instead, McKibben returns to his beloved Adirondacks and editorializes about the need for community, local economies, and so on. He demonstrates (I believe correctly) that sustainable agrarian communities beget sustainable wild lands and open space as well as a healthier human psyche. Trouble is, though, succeeding on this small scale will not make a dent in the larger problem.

McKibben does not use this book to explore a more global vision. The seeds are there, but once the harvest begins he falls back upon his mountains and the good, community life one is often able to achieve when living on an urban income in a rural area. He begins to proselytize and sound more like a politician: we need to do this, and we should do that-these are obvious goals, but how do we get there? McKibben's Jeffersonian ideals are just that, ideals, and the idealistic will make them work. What we need now is a program of ideas that can build toward a sustainable world while countering the effects of the tragedy of the commons.

Despite this, McKibben's work is vitally important and should be read. His body of work will one day define our era.

5 out of 5 stars Another Thoughtful Book By Bill McKibben.......2002-10-01

In a time when many people finally accept the fact of global warming and of continuing human assault on the environment, Bill McKibben has launched this wonderfully written, inspiring, and informative book, another in his continuing series of important essays on the complex relationship between humankind and the planet we inhabit. McKibben, a former writer for The Atlantic Monthly magazine, transplanted himself and his small family in the Adirondack region of upstate New York in the late 1980s, from whence he has come once more to deliver a healthy dollop of insight, whimsy, and wisdom concerning the way we continue to walk not so lightly on the earth.

Like most environmentalists, McKibben is deeply concerned about the continuing onslaught on the skin of the planet, and about our continuing disregard for the welfare of everything within the natural environment we most depend upon to have a continuing quality of life. Yet he is also propelled by aspects of his own experience with the ecology of his local area to set off on what he terms to be an exploration of hope, in the sense that he was searching for examples of recovery and progress in the natural landscape. One wonderful example he uses is that of the recovery of the amount of land reforested since the signal journey of one Timothy White, who in traveling in the early 1800s found very little land not cut and turned to the plow. Yet some two hundred years later, much of the Northeast forest is once again covering the landscape, and all of this in spite of the vastly increased population over the landmass in question.

Of course, as McKibben admits, must of the reforesting took place based on the gradual abandonment of the lands of the Northeast in the so-called western migration as we fulfilled our "Manifest Destiny", and this migration also spelled further deforestation efforts in those area under active migration. Once again, part of the genius of the natural environmental processes can be viewed in such a way, requiring not so much in the way of human intervention as in a kind of purposeful benign neglect (my own hackneyed term, not McKibben's). Left alone long enough, natural processes are underway that are restoring the Northeast forests to their primordial glory. And, like McKibben, I wonder at the good fortune some of us have to live in relatively sparsely developed and populated areas, where we can enjoy nature on amore personal level, where deer and bear and moose and all sorts of birds are free to live and roam. I sit in wonder with my friends the Labradors and watch, enraptured as the geese soar noisily above me this time every year.....

Moreover, one must share his frustration and sadness at the prospect of such massive forces denuding and despoiling the ecosystems even as we read and write. While he offers some reasons for hope, the truth may be that things will have to become much worse for human beings to begin to act more responsibly in following his advice to find many more ways to walk more lightly on the earth. It is imperative for those of us who understand the magnitude of the dangers confronting us act to continue to try to inform others, while also preparing to gradually break our own bonds to this culture of waste and wanton destruction. This book is more fuel for our own sustenance as we begin the long journey back to what Joni Mitchell once called "the garden'. See you there! Enjoy!

Book Description

Our perception of God makes a difference in every crevice of our character, from our inner anxieties to our public conversations. It determines whether we're trusting or suspicious, whether we're happy or discontent - and whether or not we can rely on God matters mightily on the day of our death. Mark Buchanan's third book continues his penetrating exploration of the God we worship. Bravely and honestly, he poses the direst question of human existence: Can God be trusted?

It's life drunk deeply, lived to the hilt—where we walk with the God who is surprising, dangerous, and mysterious. It's the terrain where God doesn't make sense out of our disasters and our boredom, but keeps meeting us in the thick of them.

But unless we trust in His character, we'll never venture in. We will sit at the stream all day, dying of thirst, but not daring to drink. To follow God is to drink and drink from the stream, even if it means—especially if it means—getting swallowed up.

Let Mark Buchanan show you the entrance to the Holy Wild, where you can live face-to-face with the beautiful, dangerous God of creation.

4 out of 5 stars Trusting in a Wild God?.......2007-10-17

I read and loved Mark's first book. So naturally I decided to read The Holy Wild. Mark's ability to connect spiritual truth about God's character in way that is identifiable to the heart of men is equal to that of John Eldridge. Anything Mark writes is worth the time!

5 out of 5 stars One Of My Favorites!.......2007-02-26

I love "The Holy Wild." It's a beautiful look in the character of God. Buchannan has such a wonderful way with words. He is a master of the English language. You'll be touch over and over again at God's love for you as you read this book. From stories of snakes to stories of tragedy, the book speaks volumes. Pick it up. Read it. You'll be glad that you did.

4 out of 5 stars Buchanan gets is mostly right.......2006-09-01

The beginning section is brilliant. The last section is powerful. In between it drags a bit. But the great insights into the Wild side of God are more than worth the price of the book. I find Mark Buchanan's work both challenging and enjoyable and I think you will too.

Very good work!

4 out of 5 stars Mark is a good and faithful servant.......2005-07-25

You cannot write or appreciate what Mark as written unless you have lived it. Pharisees read and don't comprehend the mercy of God and His goodness because they live in the theologian's world of the Institutional Church. Mark touches on the word 'theology' several times and it hit a cord, although I found Mark to be a little too polite. I forgive you Mark for your Canadian politeness.

I recommend this book very highy to all who are broken and contrite in spirit and are looking for a cup of water. I have been refreshed.

Thank you Lord for Mark's faithfulness and transparency.

5 out of 5 stars Inspired Writing...........2005-05-31

If you are in a difficult place and not sure if God is listening or even there - then this is the book for you. I found the author's meditations on various aspects of God's character enlightening, encouraging and comforting. It was a thoroughly delightful read that challenged and enabled me to trust Him more as well. His writing is inspired and I was in awe of his range of knowledge and subjects. His curiosity, transparency and child-like awe of God's awesomeness AND tenderness towards us is infectious and refreshing. The Holy Wild is one of the best reads I have had in quite a while!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2005-03-08

For a combination of photos, natural history, and care notes on so many species of snakes, this book cannot be beat. I just bought my second copy, so that i can have one in mint.

Even though this book was published several years ago, the care info in it is solid. If you are halfway interested in snakes, this is a definate book for you.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent, basic guide to a large number of species........2001-03-17

The book is intended to provide a basic overview of 400+ species of snake. Therefore, no time is wasted on introductions. The book is divided first into 3 categories: primitave snakes, Colubrids, and venomous snakes. These groups are further divided into family groups/regional groups. The author provides usually one (often more) color photograph to accompany the description of each individual species. Information is provided on habitat, geographic range, natural history, size, care, and reproduction for each species. With a few exceptions, the phototography is excellent. The overviews are brief, but the author provides information & photos of more species that I have found in any single book. The book is excellent for readers interested in venomous snakes. Over 1/3 of the book is dedicated to hard-to-find information/photos on sea snakes, elapids, viperids, and crotalids. The book contains a brief section on snake venom. The biggest weakness of the book is probably it's age (1987), but it is still well worth the investment. While the information on each snake is brief, I have not found a book containing species-specific information on as many species as the Mehertens book. I have had this book for a while now and still refer to it when I have questions about food and habitat for certain species. I am still for a book that talks about all species of snakes whether they are common in captivity or almost(in some cases thought to be) extinct. The book covered the material it was designed for and was all in all a very good book.

4 out of 5 stars A useful overview, though not comprehensive........1998-02-08

This book attempts to provide expansive coverage of snakes commonly seen by the public in zoos, private collections, and the pet trade. Ultimately, I was a bit disappointed by the book.

This book provides minimal, and I do mean minimal, coverage of "164 genera, 413 species, and 454 subspecies" according to the dust jacket. Of necessity, the amount of coverage devoted to each snake is limited. Still there's enough text to provide an overview of the species. Unfortunately, the book fails to mention many of the species that are currently available as reptile pets. More than half of the book is devoted to poisonous snakes, most of which the average reader is unlikely ever to encounter. I would have traded, say, the 15 pages of coverage on poisonous sea snakes for more discussion of snakes I'd be likely to see in my backyard or neighborhood pet store. Additionally, because the book is now over 10 years old, its taxonomy for a number of species is not longer correct or complete.

One of the big distinctions of this book is that it provides color photographs of all the species it describes. In most cases, the photographs range from good to excellent. This makes the blurry and out-of-focus pictures (e.g. Dumeril's boa on pp. 23 and blood python on pp. 59) stick out like a sore thumb. Some of these problems may be related to the printing of my copy, but in a number of cases the problems are a result of poor photographic technique. Especially frustrating when the species being photographed is commonly available! Still, these flaws are forgivable when compared against the general quality of the book.

"Living Snakes of the World in Color" succeeds at providing a pictorial introduction to hundreds of species of snake. Those uninterested in poisonous snakes, or those looking for comprehensive coverage of snakes available as "pets" might be better off with another book (although I have yet to find a reasonably priced book that fits the bill).

5 out of 5 stars A milestone in it's area........1997-01-28

Excellent color pictures mixed with a well-written and professional text. All to all a balanced book. Novice or expert, you will enjoy many hours of good reading. (an extra plus for the "care" section of each animal, useful and often hard to come by.)
