Book Description

Understand the current concept of wetland and methods for identifying, describing, classifying, and delineating wetlands in the United States with Wetland Indicators - capturing the current state of science's role in wetland recognition and mapping. Environmental scientists and others involved with wetland regulations can strengthen their knowledge about wetlands, and the use of various indicators, to support their decisions on difficult wetland determinations. Professor Tiner primarily focuses on plants, soils, and other signs of wetland hydrology in the soil, or on the surface of wetlands in his discussion of Wetland Indicators. Practicing - and aspiring - wetland delineators alike will appreciate Wetland Indicators' critical insight into the development and significance of hydrophytic vegetation, hydric soils, and other factors. Features · Shows 55 color plates, documenting wetland indicators throughout the nation - with more than 34 soil plates and aerial photos · Illustrates other wetland properties with more than 50 figures · Provides over 60 tables, including extensive tables of U.S. wetland plant communities and examples for determining hydrophytic vegetation Contents Wetland Definitions Wetland Concepts for Identification and Delineation Plant Indicators of Wetlands and Their Characteristics Vegetation Sampling and Analysis for Wetlands Soil Indicators of Wetlands Wetland Identification and Boundary Delineation Methods Problem Wetlands and Field Situations for Delineation Wetland Classification Wetlands of the United States: An Introduction, With Emphasis on Their Plant Communities Wetland Mapping and Photointerpretation

I did not find this book very helpful when it came to identification. It did help with classification and mapping.

This book is very well put together and provides a wealth of information on Wetland Indicators. If you are just learning about wetlands, what is in them, and how to identify different ones, then this book will be GREAT for you!

This is the 3rd book in the "Audubon Society Nature Guides" series that I've purchased, and they continue to be a pleasure to read and use. For anyone who lives near, will be travelling to, or has a general interest in Wetlands, this book is an essential. Not only is it beautifully illustrated and easy to use, but it's also a great general guide to Wetlands in the US. I am in the Chicagoland region, and almost all of the book applies to our area. Highly reccomeded for anyone from the novice to Wetland professional.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very useful manual for coastal wetland plants:.......1997-12-02

    Sections include:
-Coastal Wetland Ecology: A General Overview (different tidal wetland habitats, their description and characteristics, & typical species of each)
-Identification of Coastal Wetland Plants (keyed system, easy to use diagnostic keys)
-WETLAND PLANT DESCRIPTIONS and ILLUSTRATIONS (this is over half the book, organized by environment: Each entry with name, common and scientific names, family, full description, habitat, range, similar species, and very accurate diagram drawings by Abigail Rorer. Over 150 species covered).
-Places to Observe Coastal Wetlands, with maps
-Sources of Other Information, References, Glossary, and Index.

Should the author ever desire to revise or write another edition, I hope he doesn't change much, as it is good, but he might consider adding a few key upland plants which grow in extreme proximity to coastal wetland plants; these might be American Beach Grass (Ammophila brevigulata), Beachpeas (Lathyrus maritimus), Seaside Rose (Rosa), Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica), Bayberry (Myrica pensylvanica), Sea Celery (Ligusticum scoticum), Common Sow Thistle or Beach Lettuce (Sondus oleraceae) - but these are easily learned on their own.

This is an excellent, very well written reference manual, useful to environmental consultants, wetland delineators, and botanists. Get a plastic book cover to protect it, and use it in the field (or salt-marsh, as the case may be). This may be the best text on this particular subject. -DMM

5 out of 5 stars All-around best ecology book for general readers.......2007-04-11

Let me get right to the point--this is a great book for learning about aquatic ecology. It's all the things many conventional textbooks are not--readable, concise, interesting and useful in the field. I highly recommend this book for kids in grade 8 and up, for adults who need a concise and thorough introduction to ecology and environmental issues, and for anyone with a naturalist bent. If I were going to teach a high school or community college course in ecology, this is the book I would use.

Great ecology guide to aquatic life. It takes you from the chemistry of water through a section on glaciers and into life in a pond, stream, and a wetland. Great guide for elementary/middle school teachers and would make a great text for a high school course.

        Book Description

Over 400 species of water and wetland plants found across Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and the northern United States are included in this handy field guide designed for use by both amateur and professional botanists.

The book includes over 300 colour photographs; over 300 line drawings; scientific names, including synonyms and origins; common names; detailed plant descriptions; habitats and distributions; special features, including traditional uses as food or medicine, and unique or harmful characteristics; comparisons to and descriptions of related species.

An important subject in an easy to read book that combines art and learning. Good book. Who said learning can't be fun?

        1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed.......2007-05-25

If you are looking for a book that will be truly informative on wetlands, this is not it. To start with the positive, we have purchased books by this author/illustrator in the past, and have been happy with them - America's Prairies and Grasslands, for example. However, these books seem to be laid out in the same way - by geographic area. That is not necessarily a bad idea; with grasslands, the different types are largely dispersed geographically. But not so much with wetlands. There are marshes all over the U.S.! This kind of book would be much more usable if arranged by type of wetland.

Furthermore, some types of major wetlands are omitted entirely - salt marshes, for example. If you want to know what grows/lives there, you won't find it in this book.

Lastly, a big problem I have with this book is that areas that are not wetlands at all, such as pond or lakes, are heavily included. The author states that she has included them because "many wetland species live alongside or nearby these areas," but they were simply out of place and could be confusing to a child learning about wetlands.

Better choices are Wetlands by Darlene Stille, unfortunately textbookish, but does have some good general information, and Leapfrogging Through Wetlands by Nancy Field (Our daughter really liked this one; I thought it was okay, and it did have an interesting format).

5 out of 5 stars Lively, fun, interesting.......2005-04-29

For a youngster this is the perfect introduction to an ecosystem found almost everywhere in the country. (Actually, I'm no youngster and I found the level was just right for me too.)

The illustrations are a delight--and accurate; the text quirky with sound science and bits of fun entertaining trivia.

If you're one of the few who doesn't have a wetland nearby, then you'll find some other books in this series that might cover your area (Prairies, Mountains, Deserts too)

5 out of 5 stars An excellently titled book.......2004-02-24

This is a great introduction to wetlands ecosystems! This book begins with an introduction to what a wetland ecosystem is and how it works, giving examples of wetlands in various parts of the US. Each type of wetland ecosystem is presented with a list of plants and fungi found there described in moderate detail, including their niche in the ecosystem. Plants and fungi that may have special interest to the reader are examined in more detail at the end of this section. This book also covers the year-round changes in this ecosystem, tips on observation, specimen collection, and on keeping a nature journal. A section at the end of the book offers various activities and investigations that the reader may find interesting and helpful in understanding more about this threatened ecosystem.

This book would be a great read for anyone who is interested in nature, wetlands, or being a naturalist. It is not so detailed that beginners would be overwhelmed and not so simplistic that a moderately experienced naturalist would find it too light. I checked it out of the library but immediately ordered my own copy! I especially recommend this title to anyone who is interested in nature journals or just plain learning more about the world around them.
