    Book Description

In the new millennium, as environmental alarm has escalated, so has interest and concern about the role of religion in nature. Much of the thinking has involved a hope for a 'greening' of religion - i.e. that religion might promote environmentally protective action. Many believe that this 'greening' of religion is a prerequisite for solving the world's social and environmental problems. Curiosity regarding the relationships between human culture, religion and the wider natural world, however, goes beyond such curiosity. The ERN represents an intensive effort to broaden the inquiry and asks the fundamental question: What are the relationships between Homo sapiens, their diverse religions, and the earth's living systems--The answers are difficult and complex, intertwined with and complicated by a host of social, environmental, and religious variables. The goal of the ERN is to explore this question in a way that illuminates these relationships without engaging in wishful thinking, irrational pessimism, or the tendency to oversimplify the dynamic, sometimes rapidly evolving relations between humans, their religions, and the natural world. Encyclopedia of Religion and Nature shows convincingly that religion has a great deal to do with nature, nature a great deal to do with religion, and both have everything to do with the planetary future.

    5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Exploration.......2005-05-19

If you've ever wondered whether religion promotes or hinders environmental concern and action, or whether environments shape religion, or why in recent decades there has been such a fuss about such questions, you'll have difficulty putting down this remarkable encyclopedia. This work is global in scope, both geographically and chronologically, with 1000 entries, covering nearly every imaginable subject. It is a must-have resource for all College and University Libraries, and many environmental studies programs, and departments and scholars that attend to religion, culture, and the environment will want to have a copy of their own. But it written accessibly and would be a valuable resource for community and high school libraries, churches, synagogues, and other religious institutions, as well. But don't take my word for it. The introduction, sample entries, and entry and contributor lists, are provided at www.religionandnature.com, will make it easy to judge for yourself the value of this monumental work.

      Book Description

If you ever thought there must be better ways of organizing society, or capturing the innate creativity of citizens, then this is the book for you! An encyclopedia like no other, The World's Greatest Ideas is the most exciting collection of schemes, plans and proposals you'll ever come across. Huge global ideas to reverse the planet's crisis. Small ideas to make life simple. And wild ideas sometimes just for their own sake.

The ideas come from world experts, inspired amateurs, and from the world's press. Practical, brilliant, quirky, and inspired, they are social innovations - new and imaginative ways of tackling social problems or improving the quality of life - collected by the Institute for Social Inventions. The Institute has acted as an International Suggestions Box, a people's think tank, gathering ideas from ordinary people around the world since 1985 through its network of correspondents and members, and through its Global Ideas Bank on the web which gets over three million hits a year.

Here you'll find ideas for the future - today. Ammunition for dinner party conversations. For example:

A tribute to the fertility of human imagination, this book will interest anyone with an inventive flair - from students in all the fields from life to death that the book covers, to armchair readers who like to be titillated by the new, the unusual, and even the occasionally weird.

I just knew someone had beat me to the punch in reviewing this book.

Check this out. Are you interested in taking over the world one block at a time? Are you interested in thinking out of the box in doing so (no pablum like "we need to start our own businesses" or "we need to elect people we really really trust")?

Pick this book up. Trust me. I'm willing to bet that there is at least ONE social invention in this book that would change your life if you just tried it with a few friends.

My kids (age 8 and 10) are really interested in the environment and I see them reading this book a lot. They go back again and again to explore new topics. The photos are really great and seem to help the book keep their interest for a long time.

I purchased this book for my daughter, and have ended up reading it just as much myself! The pictures are great, and the information is clear and well-presented. My daughter doesn't only use it for her school projects, but often just picks it up to read for entertainment. I give this book my highest recommendation both to adults as well as kids.

A stellar example of children's reference material -- my students use this book constantly as part of their research projects and assignments.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Essentials of the Environment.......2005-07-29

I was asked by a friend to review this book from a layman's point of view. My educational background is that of a 50+ late-bloomer and my work background as a data secretary in a middle school. I have no political, scientific, or environmental agenda.

This book is a must-have for anyone interested in life and how to maintain life-processes. The authors have the same ideas, and have provided the means to maintain our life-processes. They have no hidden agendas other than to present all the topics by which Mother Earth can and should be treated. Mankind needs to bury any personal agendas to maintain life as we know it. The environment needs to be protected and we need to put in place the many ideas and facts presented to stop the current damage.

The book is arranged by all topics in alphabetical order. It is written with a minimum of technical language and can be understood by any and all age-groups and by any and all educational levels. It is a modern up-to-date book where additional information can be found starting at the web sites listed.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference.......2005-05-20

With nearly 200 entries about all aspects of the environment - from biology to climatology to geography to demographics to current issues - this is an excellent reference for all aspects of learning about the environment. It'll be a standard on my bookshelf and should be in the home of everyone interested in the world around them.

5 out of 5 stars English as a Second Language.......2007-01-04

I purchased this book as a gift for a young boy in Germany who is studying English. He wrote me a thank-you note (in English) saying tne book is "brilliant." Even the adults around him had great fun looking at this lively book. I was attracted to the interactive format of the book. It can be used with the internet.

        5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!.......2006-02-23

This is a beautiful book that encourages children to learn about their world. Information is provided in bits, making it easy for children to digest. In addition, the internet links provide unlimited learning on the topics in the book. As far as the person who complained that they showed a photo of NYC without the World Trade Centers, I think you need to be aware that the book was published in 2002 and the WTC no longer was there, nor will ever be there in the future. Don't we need to depict the here and now truth in our books for children?

1 out of 5 stars Colorful book - bias presentation.......2005-09-22

While the book is well made and quite educational, I can not avoid but see the bias of the publisher in presenting the "world." I almost wonder what world are they presenting? P. 52-53 the "City" depicting NYC without WTC, and the picture of a Mosque in the middle of their "city" (no other religious buildings there i.e. no church or synagogue near by). Living in post 9/11 America I find this offensive. This is certainly not the "world" I would want my child to live in.

4 out of 5 stars The Usborne First Encyclopedia of Our World.......2005-09-11

This is a colorful and interesting science text for a first to third grader and definitely worth the price. It has a neat internet link feature which I know my child will enjoy.
