Book Description

This is Sheck Exley's exciting story of the discovery and mapping of the beloved Peacock Springs Cave System - at that time thought to be the world's longest underwater cave.

His manuscript was incomplete when he met his untimely death in 1994 on a dive in Mexico. It has now been completed and expanded with the many new sections he had planned:

1. History of Peacock Slough including a social history plus the creation of a state park to preserve the cave and its surroundings as Exley had hoped.

2. Florida geology and biology.

3. Cave diving eqipment.

4. Peacock Re-Survey, a five year project that updated Exley's original map.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A true classic.......2007-05-14

The Slough was unfinished and it is not as good as the Caves Measureless to Man as a result of this. However it is considered a classic as a standard textbook for underwater cave exploration techniques.

5 out of 5 stars Peacock Springs.......2006-08-14

It is what it is - a detailed book about Peacock Springs and some of the other U/W caves of north Florida. It is detailed, well researched book on a specific cave system, from a scuba divers point of view. If you want to learn about this area - might be the ONLY book you can get - hence it is invaluable. Has sections on the biology of caves, geology, maps of caves, past explorers, etc.
I wish they'd spend more time on specifics of all the divers who died in these caves - just to keep the many amateur divers out of them and alive!

Book Description

Caligula would have understood the depraved decadence and desperate frenzy of spring break - American teens' annual pilgrimage to shimmering shores, where sex on the beach is as much an afternoon activity as it is a fruity cocktail. A festival of sun and sin, of tanned flesh and binge drinking, spring break attracts thousands of high school and college students, who wash up on Florida's shores like schools of breeding salmon, ready to indulge their insatiable apetites and hedonistic desires with total strangers. A native Floridian, photographer Nathaniel Welch has been documenting these rites of passage for four years - and has captured scenes of agony and ecstasy in Spring Broke, his first monograph. Whether it's partying at a kegger on the beach or engaging in group sex in the shower, entering a wet T-Shirt contest or passing out on the bathroom floor, these teens' uninhibited impulses are as absurd as they are disturbing. Yet Welch accepts, and even embraces, these raunchy rituals of extreme adolescence, alloing a strange sense of sadness to pervade. The morning after, broken spirits are left to reflect on their senseless acts, pack their bags, and head home.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars whistful and disturbing.......2005-03-11

Despite its title, this is not a "girls gone wild" in hardcover, but rather a series of thoughtful portraits about the desperate and sad reality behind the drunken revelry of spring break. Welch's photos are stark and honest without being lurid or judgmental. The book really captures the whole profane youth culture that is informed more by beer ads and porn films than anything else. Welch is a top-flight photographer and this book highlights his talents to a great degree.

1 out of 5 stars "Higher" Education.......2004-11-15

Might be a usefull book if you are a parent trying to get your kid into re-hab, othewise... don't bother. Not worth the trouble, and a rather sad commentary on "higher" education.

5 out of 5 stars Larry Clark + Where the Boys Are.......2004-08-07

What's happening to the youth of today? Well, number one, they're having a hell of a lot of fun and you can see the results in Nathaniel Welch's book SPRING BROKE.

One girl has a T shirt that says, "I'm not an alcoholic, I'm a drunk. Alcoholics go to meetings." She looks a bit like the very young Cybill Shepherd, with Shepherd's cockeyed superiority, as though she were in on the joke, even if the joke was on her. Welch is a fine photographer and one wonders how he got releases from some of his subjects, especially the two boys and three girls he photographs making out in the shower. The girls are wearing thongs, I guess to preserve decency, but the one boy's just wearing a backwards baseball cap. When they're US Senators will they be trying to suppress these photos? Who can tell, in another twenty years spring break may be happening all year round and maybe even in the senate chamber.

The funniest photo may be the one of the tiny hotel refrigerator completely filled with alcohol, beer and mixers. You couldn't even fit in a radish if you wanted to.

Potentially an incendiary book, SPRING BROKE plays it cool and doesn't take sides. You have the feeling that Welch, who must be nearly forty by now, has a true love for these kids akin to Larry Clark's. Good work all around.

1 out of 5 stars A Very Lame Book.......2004-06-02

This is a book of pictures of jocks and women who dig them, getting hammered.

"Yet Welch accepts, and even embraces, these raunchy rituals of extreme adolescence, alloing [sic] a strange sense of sadness to pervade. The morning after, broken spirits are left to reflect on their senseless acts, pack their bags, and head home.

...yeah, right. So why on earth would anyone want a book full of this? "Strange sense of sadness..." sounds like a fancy term for pathetic.

Don't waste your money on this book.

    Book Description

Drawing from a rich and influential heritage that spans the 20th century, design in Palm Springs runs the gamut from Spanish hacienda-style architecture and interiors to classic mid-century constructions and contemporary experimentations. Its recent rediscovery by trend-setters like Tom Ford, Jonathan Adler, and Bruce Weber has made Palm Springs superhot again–as a destination and for design inspiration. This desert laboratory of avant-garde architecture, interior decorating, and freewheeling experimentation is now a focus for design and fashion fanatics around the world. Palm Springs Living showcases the inspiring, diverse range of exteriors and interiors in Palm Springs. Included are intimate peeks into the private homes of celebrity residents and brand-new photography of the legendary Modernist houses by Richard Neutra, Albert Frey, and many others. There is also the dramatic setting of Palm Springs and Palm Desert: swimming pools and private terraces set in rocky hillsides, desert evenings with the hills turning pink, and the dramatic mountain backdrop. Ultimately, Palm Springs remains a livable fantasy–the sun always shines and the architecture and interiors, unbound from winter’s cold blasts and the workaday world, offer a vision of the stylish life.

    4 out of 5 stars Springs.......2005-08-07

A great book if you would like to take a "spring" vacation. The history is excellent but the location and description of each spring is worth the price.

    1 out of 5 stars weak.......2005-03-15

I'm sure Mr. Stamm is a wonderful individual. I feel this needs to be said because it seems that many people take any criticism on an author's work as a personal attack on said author. So, with that out of the way: this book was not for me. I've had it one night and already wish I wouldn't have bought it. It is outdated, poorly put together and incomplete. Stamm includes no additional info on many of the springs he maps. Overall, this book is very frustrating. If you're simply looking for an introduction in to the mere existence of Florida springs, then perhaps this book will be useful. Even then, you can read the book in a single evening and be ready for more by the next morning. Check this book out at the library if you must. However, if you're looking for a detailed guide to the many springs of Florida as a reference with which to plan outings and explorations, keep looking. This book doesn't cut it.

    5 out of 5 stars Great book...........2003-12-04

Ever since I was a kid, the springs of Florida have fascinated me. I knew I wanted to get my scuba certification so I could dive them. I have dove many of these springs listed in this book, and I must say, the information is right on the money. If you are looking for a comprehensive dive guide, you are not going to find it in this book. What you will find is beautiful photographs of the native flora and fana of a spring, like plants, fish, reptiles, mammals (like the manatee)etc.... All in all, Mr. Stamm has given us a great book about the glorious, beautiful, and magical elude of Florids's fresh water springs. I highly recommend it....

    5 out of 5 stars I'm the author.......2003-05-22

This book was photographed and written for the diver and spring side visitor who wants to know more about the springs environment. It is not a dive location guide, but a guide to the inhabitants and forces that make the springs of Florida a unique ecosystem in our world. They are beautiful places and inhabited by a variety of creatures. This book was made for divers and visitors who want to know more about what they see.

4 out of 5 stars Great spring training gudie book.......2007-02-12

I am a Florida resident, who absolutely loves spring training. Every spring I load up the car on the weekends and heads all over the state to different parks. I have recently gotten into the autograph act, so now when I go to the games I am seeking autographs as well. The book is very informative and from what I can tell quite accurate in its description of the parks, food, and autograph opportunities. If you are thinking of heading to spring training for the 1st, 2nd or even if you are a seasoned spring training vet, this book is definitely worth the price. It even includes some sample week long itineraries.

5 out of 5 stars I can't make a move in my yard without this book!.......2005-07-12

Ok! I've been in Florida since I was 4 years old... 34 years. My Mom started me loving plants & gardening. I have never read a book on Florida gardening like this book & I've been around a lot of plant books. Everything wonderful that I want to grow in Florida is featured in this book & the pictures are the best. Each plant is featured on its own page & at the bottom of the page the author gives his opinion on his personal favorite selection. I can't believe how many new plants I have been turned on to by reading this book, like the Kaffir Lily (Clivia), which I now own 3! Absolutely beautiful plant! The book also has several references to Florida native plants & plants that are in keeping with a the old Florida look, which I'm especially fond of. Not every book on Florida plants is going to have every little thing, but if you're looking for the best of everything, an interesting yet easy read, stop right here... You just found it!

5 out of 5 stars BEST FLORIDA GARDEN BOOK, EVER!.......2003-07-10

I am a new homeowner, and I have bought several books on the ins and outs of gardening. This book is the best. If offers simple to read pages on different types of plants to be used in Florida. I consider this my "garden bible." I realize that it is not in-depth, but it certainly highlights the basic information on what type of plant, where to plant, and what to feed it. I have purchased most of my plants for my landscape based on recommendations from this book. I have been more than pleased with the results.

If there is a book you need to help you design your home landscape, this is definately the place to start!

4 out of 5 stars I wish there were more.......2003-03-17

The first thing I have to say about this book is that I wish it were more comprehensive. I moved to Florida from the north, and find the book an excellent reference. The pictures are wonderful, and only a few plants do not have them. I especially find the sections on "companion planting and design" and "regional advice and care" helpful. The book is well-organized into sections on trees, perennials, tropical plants, vines, etc. The drawback is that the book refers to plants that are not included, which leaves me searching for another reference to find out the appearance and habitat of that plant. Overall, an excellent place to start. Sam's Club has it at a great price.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book ever...........2001-12-28

This is absolutely the best book ever for getting plant identifications. If you garden in Florida, this is a 'must have' book for reference.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars teaches without "preaches"...absorbing & fun.......2006-11-14

This new whodunit by M.D. Abrams, like its predecessor environmental parable, is impossible to put down once you read the Prologue. It immediately grabs you by the scruff of the neck and drags you happily through its several hundred pages of intrigue and sheer delight. The plot is ingeniously unique, the main character (Lorelei Crane, an actress) interesting and well delineated, the conclusion surprising. The author clearly knows and loves the lakes, springs, and wetlands of North Florida, and understands the perennial threat from human encroachment on natural habitats.
The book's plot, which revolves around the desire of several locals to develop some pristine land for profit, parallels the plot of Henrik Ibsen's play An Enemy of the People, in which Lorelei has a starring role. In Ibsen's work a scientist insists that scientific truth must be told even if it hurts his family and the perceived interests of his community. In the book's "real" life, a scientist who likewise insists on disclosing the threat to Wakulla Springs from proposed development ends up dead. Thus, the book, depicting as it does the eternal struggle between abstract truth (like survival of the environment) and short-term people needs (or greed) is really a morality play of sorts. It is subliminally educational while at the same time a fast-moving entertaining read.

Great details about the spring training parks and towns. Packed with photos and info for visiting tourists.

    From the publisher's web site.
    SYNOPSIS
Though it has changed some in recent years, spring training continues to be a time of renewal for baseball. Teams and fans, many from the snowy climes of the North, descend on Florida and Arizona to begin preparing for what they are sure will be a trip to the World Series. With the pace of the game a little slower, fans close to the action, and players more accessible, the sport seems to return to its roots for a brief, idyllic time.
Based on the author's visits to each of the 26 current spring training ballparks-17 in Florida and 9 in Arizona-this reference work first provides a detailed description of the ballpark as it currently exists, plus information on its history. Next comes the spring training history of the resident major league team (or teams, for the four parks that are shared), along with information about noteworthy spring training sites that were, or still are, located near the existing ballpark. Information on the area surrounding the ballpark completes the entry, focusing on other baseball and sports-related attractions in the area. An appendix provides a full listing of every major league team's spring training sites since 1914. Heavily illustrated.

    5 out of 5 stars I've Got Spring Fever!.......2004-12-17

I bought this book as a Christmas present for my son and it has turned out to be an early Christmas present for me. I've spent the last few nights reading about the diverse and fascinating ballparks of baseball's spring training season. I'm not sure if we'll finally make it to Florida or Arizona this March (I swear we're going to one of these years) but I almost feel as if I've already been there after reading some of these chapters. I've learned so much about the origins of the spring game and about how it has evolved. I now know that the Grapefruit League got its name, for example, when Casey Stengel tried to catch a grapefruit dropped from an airplane in Daytona Beach one year and it splattered all over him. I've also learned about the parks present and past that have made baseball in Arizona and Florida unique. I can't wait to visit some of these parks and to make use of the tips the authors offers for spring travelors. How many days until pitchers and catchers report?

If you're looking for a book about the rich history of the Grapefruit League, keep moving. This book is a straightforward how-to of gameday. I've been to six of the parks in Florida already and the book's information was very accurate. This makes me feel better about this upcoming spring when I get to visit some different parks. If you want to maximze your gameday experience, this is the book for you. Info on seating, parking, directions, traffic, food, programs, and the ever-important autograph tips make for a great book. Also includes 5 one week vacation itineraries to help you plan a vacation. If you want to make the most of your time at a Grapefruit game, this is the guide for you!

4 out of 5 stars Essential and practical advice.......2005-04-12

This book is a total success in fulfilling its remit, that as a practical guide to touring the various venues of the Grapefruit League in Florida. The advice is uncomplicated, the observations are sharp and the recommendations are worthwhile.

If you are looking for a book that provides a broader perspective on the traditions or history of Spring Training, then perhaps you should look elsewhere. Alan Byrd does not really attempt to cover this here but should not necessarily be faulted for this.

From personal experience of visiting five different venues during Spring Training 2005, this book was a tremendous help and eliminated a lot of mistakes that would otherwise have been made when visiting ballparks for the first time.

5 out of 5 stars Great Guide for Spring Training in FL!.......2005-03-31

We've been going to Florida for spring training for most of the past 25 years. We bought Byrd's guide at the first 2005 spring training game we went to. The reviews of the spring training sites, shade/sun available, autograph opportunities, and food served at the games are right on! We have several other guides, but this one is the best! We used this one for the entire week we were in Florida.

3 out of 5 stars Basic Information Provided.......2005-02-13

As a regular spring travelor, I found this book helpful in some regards, but somewhat limited. The author has consolidated a lot of travel-info into one volume. For example, there is a lot of info regarding the ticket prices and concession items at each of the 17 spring parks in Florida. What the book lacks however, is a historical context that allows readers insight into the history of each ballpark and town. I found "Spring Training Handbook," which provides travel and historical information about the Grapefruit AND Cactus Leagues, much more fulfilling in this regard.

      Happy traveling.

      5 out of 5 stars GREAT STUFF!.......2004-01-30

Finally someone wrote a book on the Spring Training experience for fans. So much info is written on players and teams, it leaves fans somewhat in the dark as to how to experience spring training throughout the various cities in Florida. This book gives you facts and information that is useful in experiencing spring training statewide. Thanks Byrd.
