Book Description

It's time to revolutionize the way you think about dieting!

Bestselling author Brenda Watson shares the remarkable secret that helped her take charge of her health and change her life forever. Now you can do the same!

The Fiber35 Diet will show you how to lose weight and improve your health by taking advantage of the extraordinary health benefits of fiber.

In recent decades, a change has taken place in America. In contrast to the fiber-rich fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains once prevalent in our diet, we now consume an overwhelming number and amount of processed foods filled with refined sugars and harmful trans fats. As a result, we have almost completely stripped our diet of what is quite possibly the most beneficial nutrient on the planet.

In addition to helping prevent many of the major diseases of our time -- including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer -- fiber helps to increase satiety, reduce hunger, and actually decrease caloric intake.

The Fiber35 Diet will show you how getting 35 grams of fiber every day is the key to losing weight and staying healthy for life. Unlike many of the low-carbohydrate, high-protein diets that currently saturate the market, the Fiber35 Diet is based on scientifically verified techniques clinically proven to help you lose weight. Most important, this diet corrects one of the most dangerous falsehoods of our time: that carbohydrates are bad. The Fiber 35 Diet teaches you a lifetime eating system that helps you shed pounds safely and effectively.

This book includes:

Twenty years ago, author Brenda Watson was overweight, chronically tired, and battling constant health problems. Today she inspires hundreds of thousands of people just like you with her story of personal transformation. By starting the Fiber35 Diet, you are taking the first step on your own journey.

5 out of 5 stars It's worth it.......2007-10-15

I saw Brendas' PBS special and was very interested in the way she broke things down. I have had GI issues for many years, and I decided to give it a try. The book is simple to read, breaks all of the how's and why's down. Now, I like shakes as meal replacements because I don't have a lot of time to mess with anything and I found that giving myself too much decision making room with my meals is how I gained weight in the first place. I did look around for a high fiber shake that was not associated with this book and could not find anything on the market. So I ended up trying the FitSmart shake afterall. It was good and though a little expensive, it works well for me. Since I have started this plan, I have noticed that I feel better. I would recommend this book, especially if you like a more structured plan that's easy to follow.

5 out of 5 stars I LOST 20 LBS AND & COUNTING.......2007-10-09

I saw the PBS special and was facinated by the concept. I think fiber is such a neglected subject in the diet industry but probably because it's not profitable. Once you learn the concept and shoot for:

~10 grams of fiber for breakfast
~10 grams of fiber for lunch
~10 grams of fiber for dinner
+snacks

You are well on your way to weight loss. Before starting the plan I was diagnosed as pre-hypertension and pre-diabetic. Now, all my numbers are better with just being on the program for 4 months. I'm never hungry and I always feel satisfied.

I haven't been doing any strenuous exercising, only walking the dog, minor strength training and playing my video games DDR and Nintendo Wii Sports (especially boxing). Also, even though Brenda's products are probably great, I have customized the diet to my likes and dislikes such as wheat tortillas, refried beans (in olive oil) and spanish brown rice. I have enjoyed reading food labels more and trying all the Kashi products such as their cereals, breakfast bars and pizza, but for me, a balance of soluble and insoluble fiber in it's most natural forms are best for intake/results.

I also try to eliminate all trans fats and corn syrup from my diet. I'm down three pants sizes now and losing 1-2 pounds a week. The Fiber 35 program is so easy to follow. Ultrametabolism is another favorite of mine (another PBS lecture special). Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to Digest.......2007-09-08

I'm always interested in looking into the latest and greatest diet plan and this one caught my eye. I found Fiber35 to be a bit unique among the other books on the diet shelf.

The gist of Fiber35? Simple. You can lose weight and improve your health by taking advantage of all the health benefits of fiber. And, the book feels that fiber is possibly the most benficial nutrient on the planet. This is because fiber can prevent major diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer- as well as increase satiety and decrease hunger. The main plan? Well, as the book goes on the say, getting 35 grams of fiber every day is the key to losing weight and staying healthy for life.

The book has a three phase weight loss plan- an accelerated weight loss phase, a moderate weight loss phase, and a lifetime weight maintenance phase. Also included is a strength and cardio training program. The strength training program consists of a resistance band workout, and the cardio program is simply walking. Other goodies in the book include recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks, as well as a personalized weight loss formula which is based on how many pounds you want to lose.

All in all, its a pretty neat book, and to me, the program seems pretty complete and laid out in an easy to follow manner. I say give it a try if the thought of eating more fiber sits well with you. Also recommend The Sixty-Second Motivator for readers trying to lose weight as diets can't help you unless you're motivated to stick with them. Good luck.

2 out of 5 stars Not impressed.......2007-08-21

This oh-so-simple formula gets complicated quite quickly.

There are shakes and bars to buy. There are formulas to work out. Oh, and you should really try for 45 g of fiber, instead of 35. And, you should purchase any number of supplements for maximum effect. And, you should drink 1/2 your body weight in oz of water each day but no, you won't spend all day running to the restroom (?)

This book restates the same information over & over and essentially rehashes the information already covered in her H.O.P.E. program on PBS. The only thing that seems to be new is the launch of Fiber 35-related products available for purchase. I tried some of the bars before I even purchased the book just because they were convenient and had healthy ingredients. They're not bad but I shudder at the thought of living primarily on prefab fiber shakes and bars for a month (not to mention what this might do to someone with a sensitive GI tract).

For those who are unfamiliar with fiber, Omega-3 oils, and general colon health, then this book might have some valuable information. For those who have read a wide variety of diet and nutrition programs, this sounds like the same song, second verse...restrict calories, increase fiber, increase water, increase exercise and make healthy food choices.

The Fiber35Diet book is well written in plain english and quite readable. The background information in support of the actual diet regimen is superior and again easily understood and readable.

5 out of 5 stars Cisco Optical Instructor.......2004-02-08

GREAT BOOK! Used a lot of the principles in my lectures.

4 out of 5 stars A good book for starters.......2002-06-13

A very good starting point. Allows you space to build on what you read.

5 out of 5 stars A good book for learning the Fiber Optics........2001-08-30

The fourth edition of this book is a product of many years of practical experience and trials of previous editions. I always wondered if more information than just reader's level as beginner, intermediate and advanced should be printed on the technical books. What you are looking for in a book and level of satisfaction depends on your involvement in that area of expertise. Please stay with me while I try my thinking on this book. If you are already an expert working in Optical Engineering field this book is not a research paper. Probably you need Warren J. Smith's book Modern Optical Engineering. If you are a student learning about Fiber Optics this book has enough information and practice questions to be qualified as a good text book, but may not be enough for your Graduate School research thesis. If you are like me, a practicing Network Engineer or technician, this book provides everything you need to know and more than enough information. It is written in an easy to understand style, and chapters are in a perfect sequence and length. That's why I am rating it 5 Stars.

1 out of 5 stars Is C.H.L really Jeff Hecht?.......2001-07-03

C.H.L.'s attempt to justify Hecht's misinformation is a bit weak

1. The G.711 recommendation is probably 30+ years old and the US telephone companies have adhered to it since ratification. In fact, G.711 simply confirmed what the US and European companies were already doing so the US telephone companies were using 64Kbps for voice even before G.711.

2. Packet switching has nothing (or very little) to do with voice. Voice is carried via circuit switched channels.

3. When voice is carried via a digital channel in the US (at 64Kbps, I might add), one form of signaling "steals" the low order bit of an 8 bit voice sample of each sixth sample of the 24 channels on a DS-1 (AKA T-1) circuit. Because of this, a data channel carried over one of these 64Kbps channels is only able to provide 56Kbps. Maybe this is where Hecht went wrong.

But don't buy or not buy Hecht's book based on this one error (in the big scheme of things it's fairly small). The real problem with the book is that it just doesn't do a jood job of explaining optical communications. A better defense of Hecht's book might be that Hecht was attempting to write about all of the uses of optical fiber and not just communications.

4 out of 5 stars Possible explaination for the previous review(Dec. 26, 2000).......2001-05-17

I personally don't have a rating to this book, however the system is asking me to rate this book with stars or I couldn't post, so I put a 4-star to cope with the current general rating.

As for the possible mistake mentioned in the previous review (December 26, 2000), I think I might have an explaination for the misunderstanding.

Jeff Hecht says that voice is coded in the telephone network with 7 bit samples to give a 56 kbps data stream. The fact is that this is what happens in the US because when the Bell system first installed those packet switching nodes for the packet switched networks around the US. They adopted 56 Kbps clear channels for interconnections, prior to the standard protocol being set up by the international standards bodies.

When the international standard called SS7 was finally completed, AT&T adopted it; however, the legacy of 56 Kbps clear channels remains in the US.

So this is what happened in the US, while the rest of the world is using 64 Kbps clear channels.

FYI.

5 out of 5 stars Great text.......2007-07-03

This was an easy textbook to follow when I took my textiles class. It is very informative and interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent insight for Seamstress.......2004-07-09

I had been searching through all of the sewing books I could find to learn more about the nature of fabric and fibers...and everything I could possibly want to know was here, and more. Absolutely fascinating. It is a textbook, but was written clearly enough that anyone with an interest in the area can easily understand it. I've been teaching classes to costumers and members of the local American Sewing Guild, who are equally impressed with the knowledge we got from this book.

5 out of 5 stars Connecting Textiles and Science.......2001-05-21

I use this book as the text for teaching a basic textiles course for sophmores. This text provides a sound foundation for students understanding the textiles and the science foundations that are the base for predicting textile performance. Every line is packed with information; there is no fluff in this book. If you want to understand WHY textiles and textile products perform in specific ways, this is the book to buy.

Book Description

In The Natural Knitter, Barbara Albright takes readers on a rich journey through the joys of all-natural fibers–materials that can make an incredible difference, both in your knitting and in the health of our planet. From the animals and plants that produce the fibers to the artisans who work with them, The Natural Knitter presents the first-ever all-encompassing look at the world of natural knitting.

Tempted by the versatile and beautiful yarns produced from the fibers of llamas, sheep, cashmere-producing goats, and angora bunnies–as well as from cotton, hemp, linen, and silk–some of the
most renowned designers in the textile industry have contributed patterns to this collection. There are more than twenty wonderful projects in all, and each highlights the softness, drape, and quality of the fiber used–from Norah Gaughan’s “Architectural Rib Pullover” in cashmere and wool yarn and Vicki Square’s “Uma Sweater” in silk yarn, to clever designs like Debbie New’s “Cast-Off Clothing” in hemp yarn and Barbara Albright’s “Lilliana’s Organic Cotton Poncho and Drawstring Pouch” design for organic cotton yarn. Meet the entrepreneurs who are creating beautiful products that are also non-toxic and earth-friendly, using plant-dyed fibers and unique processes. For the adventurous, step-by-step instructions are included for dyeing yarn naturally at home.

Lavishly illustrated and thoughtfully detailed, The Natural Knitter offers a thorough and engaging picture of the natural fiber industry–and a beautiful palette of designs for readers to knit, savor, and enjoy.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Real tears and laughter.......2007-10-04

The Natural Knitter is a book for all lovers of natural fibres. I purchased it on the strength of a quick look at my regular knitting group's meeting, and also because it has a wonderful Norah Gaughan pattern in it. On closer perusal it is so much more - not only does the author's love of fibre, colour and the natural world come through, but it is a wonderful testament to a person whom the world could ill afford to be without. This book not only contains a variety of patterns suitable for all members of a family, but a warm and humane account of the author's love of fibre, whether it be alpaca or sheep, llama or qiviut, spinning, natural dyes and organic fleeces. It is NOT a book to exclude those of us whose love of fibre is confined to commercially produced yarns, the text alone will win many friends. This is a book to truly savour and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars The Natural Knitter.......2007-06-08

As a long time knitter this book is great and amaxon did a find job in processing and shipping.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Inspiring.......2007-05-31

This book is an inspiration in this day and age. I'm always skeptical when I hear of a knitting book focusing on "natural". It usually means the patterns are dowdy, oversized, shapeless and photographed in only neutral colors. Not so with Albright's book. The book is beautifully written, photographed and styled. The patterns are classic and lovely with modern shaping that's enhanced even more by the luxurious fibers. Breathtaking and timeless.

Each of the chapters deals with a different natural fiber and is incredibly informative and interesting to read. Gaining understanding of these fibers enables a knitter to choose intelligently between quivit and cashmere before spending a lot of money.

With the influx of so many new knitting books on the market, this one is original, and lovely - "the real deal" - and a must-have for any serious knitter's library.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-05-04

Everything about this book is rich, lush and beautiful. The author did a beautiful job of exploring natural fibers. For me, many of the patterns are challenging with my current "patience to skill" ratio (I consider myself a newly-intermediate-knitter) - but I am inspired to eventually try several patterns. Albright discussed how to define "organic" fibers - there are, I believe, 5 distinctions of organic fibers. Qualities of fibers are thoroughly reviewed. Though I am not a spinner, spinning is discussed in terms that make sense to a knitter. I liked Albrights' general approch, it's very nuturing and informative to knitters and fiber artists of all levels.

4 out of 5 stars back to nature-the real material.......2007-04-10

a fantastic book. So many beautifull designs, yarns I had never heard before. Very motivating to start up right away. As I am a fan of all kind of natural yarns it is the book I have missed so far.
But what I miss in the book are designers contact addresses in case you would like to ask something
Also I tried to order from one of the yarn suppliers addresses given in the book but I got no answer.
How for example can I get in touch with the books author.
Maybe I get help from someone. It would be a pity if this marvelous book cannot be more than a wonderfull colletion of wonderfull ideas.

3 out of 5 stars F-Factor Diet.......2007-10-01

Although I haven't finished the book yet, I have found what I've read so far to be very informative.

5 out of 5 stars Love this book.......2007-08-28

I absolutely love this book and am having very good success with it. I think we've all gotten away from eating the way we should, and this book brings us back to the way we all should eat. It's easy to understand, it's interesting, and it works! I found the book because I'm having gallbladder issues and needed to find a lowfat, high fiber diet and this one is wonderful.

2 out of 5 stars Poor Product Availibilty.......2007-07-28

The book itself was interesting and informative. But, we know that if we follow any diet to the letter, we will loose weight in the 4-6 lbs range for the two week period. What was my major disappointment was the fact that Whole Foods doesn't carry the cracker anymore nor can you find the Dannon Fit and Crave Yogurt anymore. I contacted both companies and Dannon completely discontinued the product. I guess we can add the Fibersure that she is the spokesperson for to another yogurt, but that defeats the purpose.

5 out of 5 stars Best Informative Book.......2007-07-18

This is a great book and very easy to follow. I've been with weight watchers for awhile now and needed a little extra push to get the remaining weight off. This book was wonderful and I highly recommend it! You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Diet book for all your needs.......2007-07-12

After reading 60 diet books and losing 60 pounds myself I want to say this book is one of the best on the market. This book covers everything you need to know, balancing your macro nutrients of protein, carbohydrate, and fat. Using lean meats, high fiber and high water content carbs, and healthy omega-3, polyunsaturated, and monounsaturated fats. At the same time the author understands reality and explains how to use this program when eating every type of restaurant and fast food place. In addition after you have met your goal she makes considerations for special events and holidays and makes allowance for 36 days a year you are not on the program 100% so you can enjoy birthday cake and Thanksgiving dinner with out the guilt. The diet consists of three phases where you start out limiting you carb intake to strictly high fiber items and then slowly you add back in healthy carbs over the next two phases. I promise this diet will not leave you hungry. I lost my weight on the zone diet and one of the reasons I was successful is that I discovered how filling it was to eat high fiber carbs, I am glad a book has come out that really adds this important element to a weight loss plan. She also covers the importance of increased activity in her last chapter and finishes with plenty of healthy recipes. If you are interested in the science of why this diet works I would recommend also reading "The Zone" by Dr. Barry Sears if you just want to lose the weight buy this book and follow the plan.

Fantastic book! One that is extremely useful and one that I take everywhere with me. Perfect for new designers acquiring fabric sense. I know several firms where this book is a staple reference guide. A+++++

3 out of 5 stars Good Text, But No Color.......2000-06-28

I was a little disappointed that all of the pictures were blackand white. In order for this book to be useful to me, I would have topay [approx. $20.] plus shipping and handling to get the actual swatches used in this reference book.

The text seemed to be very thorough and all fabric types are covered. For the price, I would have expected color photos of the swatches since it is difficult to judge texture from black and white. If you don't mind investing [more money] for the swatches, you'll be happy with this book.

Book Description

The face is the most important feature of a doll -- it is also the most challenging. So it is surprising that there is so little instruction available on creating doll faces. This book fills that void.

Author Patti Medaris Culea began her career in art as a portrait painter and she puts that experience to work when creating her doll faces. In this book, she shows readers a simple technique for easily creating faces using her step-by-step approach. She gives her tips for how to divide the face into quadrants, graft features together, and much more.

Every aspect of doll making is covered -- from the basics to detailed techniques for making the various faces to instructions for putting a pattern together. Readers will learn how to use watercolor pencils, acrylics, and fabric paints to color a face, how to create a face using collage techniques as well as stamping and beading, and tips for working with stretchy fabrics to create indented eyes, separate eyelids, and sculpted lips.

    5 out of 5 stars A great two-volume set.......2000-04-26

This is the second book in a two-volume set. Volume IIIA (608 pages) deals primarily with system-related issues. The second volume, IIIB (515 pages) delves into greater detail regarding the design and performance of critical components used in optical fiber telecommunications.

Like volume IIIA, volume IIIB consists of chapters written by different authors. Although many of the chapter authors come from Lucent and/or Bell Labs, they do a good job of keeping the book at an academic level that is largely devoid of excess or offensive commercialism. This is a first-rate book that needs to be read and understood by anyone seriously engaged in engineering activities related to optical fiber telecommunications.

Each chapter is written in what is an essentially self-contained manner (though many chapters make reference from time to time to other chapters in either of the two volumes - a welcome thing as it brings continuity to the two-volume set). After a nice overview by Kaminow, volume IIIB dives right into what is arguably the single most important optical component to be developed for telecommunications in the 90's: the erbium-doped fiber amplifier. As with most chapters, chapter 2 does not overwhelm the reader with long mathematical derivations. Instead, it places at the engineer's disposal the relevant mathematical equations necessary for important analysis, as well as a wealth of references at the end of the chapter that facilitate further reading and the most quantitative analysis. This chapter covers all the important features of amplifier design, from gain to saturation, noise figure, coupling loss, polarization effects, pumping schemes, components, and various ways in which the amplifier may be used (in-line amplifier, power amplifier, etc.).

Chapter three covers transmitter and receiver design for amplified lightwave systems. The material in this chapter is high level. Topics include things like extinction ratio, rise/fall time, chirp, mode partitioning, and polarization mode dispersion. The emphasis is on how specific attributes of the transmitter and receiver interact with other components in the transmission system to affect overall system performance. Thus, the chapter not only discusses what laser chirp is, what causes it, and how to reduce it, it also delves into the system implications of chirp and describes why it is bad, and how to determine how much you can tolerate.

Chapters four, five, and six are something of a trilogy. Chapter four introduces the idea of laser sources in general for amplified and WDM lightwave systems. Chapter 5 continues the subject by describing advances in semiconductor laser growth and fabrication technology. Chapter 6 goes into more specific detail regarding vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers. Of these three chapters, chapter four is the most generic, and (at least for me) by far the easiest to follow. Chapter four covers subjects like direct modulation of DFB lasers, external modulation, integration of modulator and laser, making DFB lasers with discrete and stable wavelengths for WDM systems, fiber-based lasers using fiber-Bragg gratings (FBGs), tunable lasers, and a smattering on waveguide gratings and DFB array WDM sources.

While chapter 4 was easy for me to follow, I found chapters 5 and 6 rather difficult. Both these chapters are very well written, and the authors are clearly quite expert in their fields. The material, however, is sufficiently specific to the details of design that I found myself lacking much of the prerequisite information and knowledge expected by the authors. I think that chapters 5 and 6 will be of most use to people who actually work in or very closely with semiconductor laser growth technology and/or vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers. I did come away knowing lots more about these technologies than I did going into the chapters (things like how and why lattice strain is used in the design of semiconductor lasers, for example) but a more basic introduction would have helpful to me.

Chapter 7 put me back into more familiar territory with discussions about optical fiber components and devices. Topics include fiber dispersion compensators, fiber gratings, gratings in planar waveguides, and high-power fiber lasers and amplifiers. This chapter tends to be at a high level, with little specific information or mathematical equations.

Chapter 8 is really quite interesting. The title is "Silicon Optical Bench Waveguide Technology." Like chapters 5 and 6, chapter 8 gets into more detail about specific design and manufacturability issues. Since I have more background in this area, though, I found the chapter at about the right level for me (it did not leave me feeling as lost as chapters 5 and 6 did). One of the most interesting developments in this chapter (for me, at least) was the section on Fourier filter multiplexers. The chapter also has a relatively good quantitative description (you will need to fill in some of the derivations yourself) of couplers as well as star couplers and waveguide grating routers.

Chapter 9 is a good discussion on lithium niobate integrated optics, covering issues of design as well as performance and specification. It also highlights their applications as switches, modulators, and polarization scramblers/controllers as well as wavelength filters. Chapter 10, the last chapter, reviews photonic switching technologies. There is some useful information about switching fabrics, along with generic information about important specifications.

Both volumes have a good index and extensive chapter references, making this one of the best general-purpose desk reference volumes I've found for engineers involved in lightwave communications systems.

5 out of 5 stars Useful and timely.......2000-03-03

Chapter 12 is worth the price alone: The authors have done a remarkable job of getting to the heart of solitions.

    5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive review.......1999-10-08

Optical Fiber Telecommunications III is designed for anyone engaged in engineering work related to the fiber-optics telecommunications industry. There seems to be little doubt about the revolutionary path leading to full deployment of fiber in the telecommunications backbone network, or the trends moving fiber closer to and closer to end users. Yet, while this continual deepening of fiber into the national network progresses steadily, a new revolution has overtaken photonics in the backbone: dense wavelength-division multiplexing, or DWDM. DWDM, perhaps more than any other technology, is the reason that the third edition of this seminal work is needed today. It's not too surprising, then, that most of the third edition is directly or indirectly related to design concerns related to DWDM.

This text is best described as an engineer's desk reference. The scope is large, necessitating breaking the book into two volumes. Volume III A deals mostly with system issues and concerns, delving into more esoteric component issues primarily to illustrate the wider network implications. Volume III B deals more with specific component design issues, such as sources, detectors, and erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs).

As a desk reference, there are few derivations of equations from first principles. Perhaps the closest derivation is that of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation in chapter 12 on soliton transmission. Even here, however, the derivation is sketchy at best. For the most part the book simply places the equations at the reader's disposal. I found most of the equations are explained well, and most of the chapter authors included numeric examples, charts, and graphs. This helps immensely in understanding the implications of the many equations presented throughout the text. For those interested in derivations, each chapter comes with extensive endnotes so that anyone interested in reviewing the original work can easily do so.

One problem with the text revolves around definitions of mathematical variables and constants. Though they are all defined as introduced to the reader, there is no glossary of these terms. I constantly found myself writing in the books margins little notes like "alpha is the total loss coefficient, first used in equation x on page y." Since different authors write each chapter in the book, it may not be practical to have a glossary of terms for the entire volume - usage will probably overlap. Still, it would be nice had the editors suggested that each chapter have a glossary of mathematical variables. It would make the book far more practical and useful as a desk reference. On a more positive note, however, the book does contain a detailed and useful index.

Even without derivations, the book contains a plethora of equations and charts to satisfy the needs of most quantitatively oriented engineers. It's a good introductory book for those with a modest background in optical telecommunications technology. It's also a useful book for those more familiar with the technology, but needing a handy reference source with most of the pertinent information conveniently bound between two covers. Volume A contains 15 chapters in roughly 600 pages. Volume B is slightly smaller, having 10 chapters in roughly 500 pages.

For me, the two most interesting and useful sections of the book were chapter 8, "Fiber nonlinearities and their impact on transmission systems," and chapter 12, "Solitons in high bit-rate, long-distance transmissions." Chapter 12 is probably one of the best written. Although the subject matter is among the most difficult covered in the book, L. F. Mollenauer, J.P. Gordon, and P. V. Mamyshev have done a remarkable job of explaining solitions in a quantitative, accurate, yet clear and concise manner.

The first chapter in the book, a brief overview by Ivan P. Kaminow, provides some interesting historical insights and background, but has relatively little pertinent information for the design engineer. The second chapter deals at a high level with SONET and ATM technologies, explaining the requirements that led to the development of these standards and some of their topologies such as chains and self-healing rings. Chapter 3 deals with coding and error correction in optical fiber. This chapter was interesting in its use of fundamental physics (such as quantum noise) to examine the need for coding.

The next chapters move from coding and protocol to issues in the physical layer. Chapter 6 deals with polarization effects, the origin of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and how to measure PMD. On a similar theme, chapter 7 deals with the subject of chromatic dispersion and, perhaps more importantly, the subject of dispersion compensation. One of the interesting facts about DWDM is that elimination of dispersion is no longer a design goal, as it is with single-wavelength transmission systems. In DWDM systems the designer wants just the right amount of dispersion - not too much, and not too little. There are even situations in which the dispersion map matters - in other words, you cannot always count on being able to place large bulk amounts of compensating dispersion just in front of the optical receiver. Sometimes you need to distribute it along the fiber's length.

Two chapters, 9 and 10, deal with the specific design concerns of terrestrial and undersea lightwave systems, while chapter 14 deals with the substantial concerns of analog video transmission over optical fibers. Chapter 11 deals with advances in high bit-rate transmission systems (this chapter tends to be somewhat dated, and the situation will only get worse with passing time). Chapter 13 surveys the types of fiber architectures in current and possibly future networks. Finally, Ivan P. Kaminow finishes the book with a chapter on advanced multi-access lightwave networks, which is primarily the switched DWDM network (another chapter subject to dating).

This is an extremely valuable book for anyone involved in Photonics in the telecommunications network. I highly recommend it. Whether you read it cover to cover, or simply keep it handy as a desk reference, I'm sure you will find it well worth the cover price.
