This game guide is fantastic. It is well set out, easy to follow and full of very useful tips and strategies. I would highly recommend this guide to anyone to get the most out of the game.
Its Absolutely the Ultimate Players Guide, for young & old Nintendo minds........2007-09-22
I purchased this guide as a bithday gift for my son, who is extremely into playing Nintendo DS games.
He had already purchased Nintendo's DS Animal Crossing game and had played it numerous times, and one night I curiously decided to try it out.
Well, anyway's after spending a few hours of trying to figure out the game. I decided an Official Nintendo Animal Crossing Player's Guide would make an awesome Birthday gift......for him".
Worth getting.......2007-07-10
Now I don't usually buy guides for games, in fact, this one is the only guide I have for games anyway, not to mention, animal crossing WW is a very hard game to master, It includes 11 pages of cool designs ideas and details of how to draw them, a complete item list (with pictures of the items) a furniture series list that has a list of all the furniture series (like lovely, kiddie, modern ect...) with a pictures of all the items and what the room looks like when the series is completed, a special character list of all the special characters and when to find them, a neighbor list of all the neighbors that could move into your town, and each profile has there personality, picture of them, and their tag phrase. a HRA (happy room academy) guide that shows how to score big with the HRA, a bug list, show when and where to find all the bugs, a fish guide, showing when and where to find all the fish, a fossil guide, showing all the fossils that can be found, a clothing list, showing all the shirts/hats/glasses/helmets that can be found and where to find them, and again, a item list showing all the items and where to get them.
a Gyriod list, showing pictures and names of every single gyriod.
a "Quick bell guide" of easy ways of getting big bells, and showing all the house upgrades and how to find them. a "friendship guide" of how to get neighbors to like you, that might even result in the neighbor giving you a picture of them that you can put in your house!
and a "Starter guide" for people who just got the game and the guide basically walks you through you beggining of the game, so you don't get frustrated
Overall,
The guide has a little one for everyone, rather your in the start or middle or even think you know everything, it is helpfull to have,
in layout it gets a: 9/10
in information it gets a: 10/10
and in durabillty of the actually book, it gets a: 8 and a half/10
P.S.
This is a great guide to get with the game!
The perfect guide for a perfect game.......2007-06-08
I bought this guide for my girlfriend, and she has used it intensively for over a month now. Some game-items has been hard to find or get, and this guide has helped her a lot and made her very happy. To be honest, it's more like an encyclopedia than a guide, but overall it has a nice design and pages full of every little detail you've ever wanted to know about the strange, quirky and funny Animal Crossing world. If you like to visit Animal Crossing every day, this guide will make your Wild World experience so much better.
Nintendo Power Animal Crossing Guide.......2007-05-15
I was very pleased with the condition in which i recieved my player's guide. The condition was good, the packaging was brilliant and the product was very helpful. 10/10 i say!!!!
Book Description
Nick Brandt depicts the animals of East Africa with an intimacy and artistry unmatched by other photographers who choose wildlife as their subject. He creates these majestic sepia and blue-tone photos contrasting moments of quintessential stillness with bursts of dramatic action by engaging with these creatures on an exceptionally intimate level, without the customary use of a telephoto lens. Evocative of classical art, from dignified portraits to sweeping natural tableaux, Brandt's images artfully and simply capture animals in their natural states of being. With a foreword by Alice Sebold and an introduction by Jane Goodall, On This Earth is a gorgeous portfolio of some of the last wild animals and a heartfelt elegy to a vanishing world.

Beautiful photography.......2007-09-27
I bought this book as a gift for someone who had just visited East and South Africa. They were thrilled with the absolutely beautiful photography and the memories it evoked of their trip.
Just Stunning.......2007-08-31
I own many, many photography/art books and this one without a doubt is my favorite.
The photography is simply stunning. Brant shoots his work on medium format infrared film and that is a great combination to use.
Don't even think about not getting this book, just do it.
Africa, my love.......2007-06-27
Having travelled extensively in Africa and being a keen photographer myself, I was happy to find this title in one of the Dutch photography magazines. The book is apparently not for sale in Holland, so I bought it at Amazon's.
My collection of photography books consists mainly of black and white photography. I am sure buyers will love the images in this book as much as I do, allbeit some pictures are a bit over the top, due to the infrared film used. Nevertheless the photos are just overwhelming; it feels like standing there yourself!
Next to 'The Great Migration' by Carlo Mari (which has a different approach) and 'Pink Africa' (also by Carlo Mari, and obviously in color) this book is among my favorite books on wildlife in Africa!
Images of untold beauty and magnificence........2007-05-31
Nick Brandt is one of the most talented and sensitive photographers of the 21st century.
His vision and technique is unmatched.
The patience involved in capturing these sometimes rare creatures is incredible let alone to produce such aweinspiring images.
Moments of recognition!.......2007-02-18
Great photo's of, for us, familiar parts of Africa. Shows the game in a different light.
Every new page is an inspiration! Not only for photografers but for travellers also.

Customer Reviews:
Challenging.......2007-10-01
There are some prerequisites to use this book effectively:
1. Get a metronome and use it.
2. Be patient. I thought I could rip through these exercises one after another but I find that I'm spending several sessions on each exercise to reach the speed and accuracy I want. You really need to memorize the exercises so you can practice them frequently.
3. Set aside the time to concentrate on this book. An hour a day is probably enough to move forward through the lessons. It gets harder as you turn the pages.
4. Resolve. This is a challenging program that Petrucci has put together. It would be easy to put it aside and do something that is more fun.
However, my playing has IMPROVED! I go back to songs I had attempted in the past and find I can rip through passages I stumbled on before.
The book works.
A Must for aspiring guitarists and Dream Theater enthusiasts.......2007-07-17
I think this is much more beneficial than the Rock Discipline video. John explains his exercises clearly and they are very constructive. I've been playing guitar for some 13 years before I picked this up, and even though I've only spent a couple weeks with this book (and a metronome I just as recently bought), I have noticed some improvement in my playing.
Very good book.......2007-07-11
This book is exactly what I was looking for . I have been playing guitar from last 6 years but know quite a bit of theory but I could not apply that much. What this book did was to show me a way forward , to correct some of my notions and to reinforce my concept. John is a great guitarist and amazing musician. The way he deconstructs solos makes you think why cant anyone do it . But as per John's sagely advice, it took him months and months of hard work and practice to be able to belt out such magnificent riffs. I would recommend this book for people who are into advancing stage of guitaring and are in rut so that they can understand and comprehend art of music better . Wonderful book.
Worthwhile.......2007-07-09
I've bought multitudes of instructional materials for guitar over the years and would have to rate this as well as his earlier publication, Rock Discipline at the top of the heap. Exercises definitely improve independent finger coordination, timing, picking technique, and stretching. I would recommend these two titles.
Not For the Novice.......2007-05-16
If you're a novice and unfamiliar with scalar and modal guitar playing, get familiar with these before you try this. Good examples of tweaking scales and licks with non-diatonic and chromatic flavors. Tons of great exercises that really will improve your playing if you work at it. If you don't know a dominant seventh from a sus four, start with the basics.

Customer Reviews:
Great basic historical book on lucha libre.......2007-06-01
Picked up the boook after realizing Madigan's name as someone who once wrote TV for WWE a few years ago. The first thing that hits you when reading the book is the personal attachment from the author as he talks about his personal love for lucha libre. The book is a great historical tool in terms of discussing the beginnings of the sport in Mexico, the necessary figures in the sport and influence of it in American and Japan. Something that's also a fun tidbit is small insert stories about various backgrounds. One of which is the negativity of WWF and McMahon towards lucha libre and mocking overtones until the late 1990s when they had to and even then it was jsut a one time deal (1997). The details of Paul Heyman (Madigan is a big proponent of Heyman, who's called the savior of lucha libre in the U.S.) and his role in bringing guys like Mysterio, Konan, Psichosis, etc. to the States and eventually, them jumping to WCW is a necessary tale. Two things took away from the boook though. First, at some points certain parts drag on and he does come off as a bit repetitive. Another thing, one of which I thought would have really made the book amazing, was if Madigan went into detail about certain specific angles during the years involving El Santo, Blue Demon, Mil Mascaras, etc. I guess he didn't because as he wrote early on about lucha libre, most of the stories are told in the ring, with the wrestling, and not in the same way we're use to it in the U.S. One minor thing that bugged me was the lack of a mention for Mistico (current CMLL wrestler) who is one of the top draws in the world. I figure the book was finished years ago (since Madigan wrote about Juventud, Super Crazy and Psichosis as being a group on WWE TV), so I attribute that to that. Overall, a good book and the pictures (some of which I gather are rare) are fun to go through. If nothing else, a definite much needed book on a topic that isn't well known about currently in the States.
Viva la Mondo Lucha!.......2007-05-14
Great Book! Lottsa history and current stuff such as Lucha Vavoom. Only in this book will you find a historical and enchanting journey into this very special and unique culture!
Lucha Muy Bueno.......2007-05-05
This book is excellent. It goes beyond talking about the Big three Luchadors Mils Mascaras, El Santo, and Blue Demon. It talks about El Muricelago, The Guerreros, La Parka, White Angel, Dr. Wagner and others. It gives you insight on the culture of Mexico and Lucha Libre as well. Beautiful photos are in the book some are very rare. This is a must for any wrestling fan. BUY IT!!!!!!
More than just a wrestling book..........2007-04-27
A lot of people might pick up this book with tongue planted firmly in cheek -- chuckling at the silly, pop culture nonsense of Mexican wrestling. But this book is not a joke and it's not about wrestling. It's about culture, history, society, entertainment, myth, etc. It's about the genuine love fans have for wrestling and what it means to them.
It's throughly researched and written with genuine enthusiasm - which is an amazing achievement when you consider its author is legally illiterate and often unable to wash himself properly.
Buy it and you'll see that this book and all of Mexican wrestling is no joke.
Viva El Santo!.......2007-04-27
This book is about Mexican professional wrestling, obviously. It gives a general overview of the history of the sport, with special emphasis on some of the biggest stars. Some of these wrestlers became so popular that they became big movie stars in Mexico (while wearing masks, no less). Mexican wrestling has a very colorful history, and it's well covered here, with plenty of colorful pictures.

Jump into the debate about which town has the largest ball of string, the biggest tree stump, or America's true weather-forecasting groundhog. The locations of giant statues of the Jolly Green Giant, an "African village" in South Carolina claiming to be an independent kingdom, and the mysterious "Thing" of the Sonoran Desert are all found here. Buy it and drive west, young trendies.
Customer Reviews:
Not very practical.......2006-08-24
This books gives you a lot of sites to see on your Road Trip but doesn't give you very practical advice how to get to them or their exact locations. There are a lot better books out there.
Make your trip eccentric and different!.......2006-01-01
A great source of ideas, oddball locations, and "home of the largest" collections, this book is nearly perfect for a long trip that needs some spice.
While it would have been nice to see a state-by-state organizational method (and some contact information) besides the index, the facts and details are nonetheless perfect for anyone wanting to make a trip different. The largest ball of twine, the Jack Daniel's museum and distillery, Punxsutawney Phil, Superman's hometown, and a plethora of pyramids; it's all there. (By the way, the aforementioned attractions are just a few of the ones I have seen personally - but not all the pyramids of course.)
With that said, the authors provide an interesting take on the idea of eccentric traveling. They organize based upon the type of trip a traveler might like. If you want an all religion tour or a "boring" tour, they provide the itinerary.
Along with a highlighter, this book goes along with me on every trip. I want to make sure I don't miss anything. It's great and I'm crossing them off as I see them.
Sardonic putdowns ruin the content of this book........2005-12-30
I bought this book thinking it would guide me to fun and funky places to visit that were off the beaten track. Instead, it seemed to be more of an excuse to mock the very places it purported to be interested in. The topper was when Roadside America described the Aviation Museum in Ohio as if it were a joke, when in fact it is a memorable and inspiring museum. Overall, I didn't enjoy the tone of the book, which to me, seemed to be one of derisive put-downs. I think many of the places described in this book would be fun to visit, but it's hard to pick out the good from the bad, with the way this book is written.
A great guide to take on a road trip.......2005-09-21
Even though it lacks a bit of organization, the places are true Americana -- the essence of a real road trip. This book is a great accompaniment to Live Your Road Trip Dream - Travel for a year for the cost of staying home -- the ultimate road trip planner.
Be sure to check out some of these great places on your next long distance road trip.
New Roadside America .......2005-08-16
I thought I was buying a new book. When I received, I found a golf score card from The Woodlands At Hawks Prairie completed with the names of Dino and Brad filled out on Fathers Day '05.
The book was in excellent condition even with the score card.
Also, the John Dillinger Museum is no longer in Nashville, IN (hasn't been for some time). The museum is now located in Hammond, Indiana.
Book Description
Patagonia is a wild and windswept land located near the tip of South America that includes portions of Chile and Argentina. It features spectacular granite towers, some of the biggest glaciers in the southern hemisphere, and grassy steppes where colorful gauchos herd cattle and sheep across limitless prairies. It's a place that has always appealed to a special kind of traveler, lured by lofty summits and stupendous scenery. It's the kind of land where you can wander at will and find yourself lost in the most interesting ways.
Patagonia exudes a magnetic emptiness that calls forth a commensurate feeling for a newer, fresher, more hopeful world. Photographer Tim Hauf captures the spirit of this remarkable place in over 130 photographs that run the gamut from stunning vistas to intimate details. Conger Beasley provides an illuminating text that describes the fascinating history of this remote world, as well as its remarkable flora and fauna.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful photographs of a far away place.......2006-07-25
I bought this book because we are planning a trip to Patagonia. This book with its magnificent photographs has been a huge help in planning the trip. Not because it gives any travel tips, but the photographs speak for themselves. This is not a travel advice book. There is no information regarding where to stay or eat. However, the photographs tell me what not-to-miss sites to include in my tour. The photographs are so gorgeous that I cannot hardly wait to get there. This book plus a good South American travel agent have allowed me to establish a travel plan to the most scenic locations. The photographer must have spent a long time traveling the area. His views of glaciers, lakes, dramatic clouds and wildlife show his talent. Many outstanding panoramas are included. These must have been taken with a high quality panorama camera. This is a very nice photo book, to be looked at over and over again.
Patagonia a beautiful read!.......2004-07-21
I recommend this book highly. Tim Hauf?s remarkable photography captures the many regions of Patagonia - the diversity of landscapes, the various moods and raw beauty, a stark grandeur. The uncivilized immensity of mountains and water, sometimes filled with icebergs other times with whitecaps, some misty above the power of falls, leaves the viewer in awe. We are surprised and delighted by the variety of images, from the smallest of flowering bushes to the romping of guanacos, but overall we are speechless before the vastness of empty space. Fortunately, Conger Beasley?s text brings the photography into a semblance of understandable. By introducing us to the history of the region alongside tales of the personal journey that he shared with Hauf, Beasley brings the reader into the wild and foreign land as a fellow traveller. We are less intimidated by the endless wild.
Enhanced with an informative text.......2004-05-03
Tim Hauf is one of those photographers who raises to the level of visual art with his spectacular, full-color photography. Patagonia: Wild Land At The End Of The Earth continues to document his ability to capture truly memorable and impressive imagery -- this time to that wild and desolate region near the bottom-most tip of South American known as Patagonia. This latest showcase of Tim Hauf's photography is enhanced with an informative text by Conger Beasley as we tour through the history of this obscure but fascinating country which is sparsely populated, yet offers visions of granite towers, glaciers, wildlife, farmlands, and breathtaking landscapes of incredible beauty. Patagonia: Wild Land At The End Of The Earth is a welcome and highly recommended addition to personal, professional, and academic landscape photography collections.
Book Description
“Nature deficit disorder” has become an increasingly challenging problem in our hyper modern world. In Awake in the Wild, Mark Coleman shows seekers how to remedy this widespread malady by reconnecting with nature through Buddhism. Each short (two to three pages) chapter includes a concrete nature meditation relating to such topics as Attuning to the Natural World, Reflecting the Rhythms of Nature, Walking with Compassion, Releasing the Inner Noise, Freeing the Animal Within, Coming into the Peace of Wild Things, Weathering the Storms of Life, and more. Incorporating anecdotes from the author’s many nature retreats, Buddhist wisdom and teachings, important nature writings by others, and nature itself, the book invites readers to participate in, not just observe, nature; develop a loving connection with the earth as a form of environmental activism; decrease urban alienation through experiencing nature; embody nature’s peaceful presence; and connect with ancient spiritual wisdom through nature meditations.
Customer Reviews:
Awake in the Wild.......2007-02-04
Mark Coleman's book "Awake in the Wild" provides a delightful and accessible means to explore meditation in the nature world. The exercises and stories provide simple and profound ways for the reader to experience a greater sense of attention and connection to the web of life, and an awareness of the divine. "Awake in the Wild" has become a faithful companion for me on hikes -- there is always something new to discover. I highly recommend this book for both aspiring and cultured meditators! Enjoy.
Awake in the wildness.......2007-01-10
I have enjoyed reading this book as it reminds me that just being aware can bring peace. I like all of the specific meditation suggestions at the end of the chapters as it really helps to use and experience what Mark is suggesting.
loved it..........2006-11-23
This book is soothing to the soul, and is an inspiration to connect with this beatiful planet we live on. Mark Coleman, really captures the essence of what it is like to tune in to the natural world. This book is an encouraging reminder to look at all of the life happening around us, and to stop and smell the roses. Its an easy, sweet, and soothing read.
a breath of fresh air.......2006-11-15
This book is a must read. Mark Coleman reminds us of the importance of getting off our computers and into the wild, a place many of us are no longer familiar with. This book helps bring you back and many of the meditations are great for beginners. When you're feeling unbalanced, disconnected, and simply overwhelmed by the world, take this book to the ocean, into the woods, or your favorite park and find yourself again.

Book Description
In the great wide wilderness, a little girl and her dog live alone in a cave high up on the mountainside. They are happy surviving on their own, until one day in the bitter cold of winter, they see bear tracks in the snow that lead right up to their cave ...
Charming illustrations bring life to this sweet story of courage and compassion, written and illustrated by award-winning author and illustrator Chris Wormell.
Customer Reviews:
Bear necessities.......2006-12-12
Chris Wormell books aren't flashy and extravagant. They don't bop you over the head with shiny foil or cartoonish glee or wild dance sequences. As a children's librarian it was with great relief that I discovered that there are as many different kinds of picture books out there as there are works of adult fiction. There is undoubtedly a picture book out there for every kind of child. And let us say that you have a kid that likes the idea of seeing other kids surviving on their own. Maybe they want a Man v. Nature book, but intended for the preschooler set. Robinson Crusoe for toddlers. Pint-sized future "Hatchet" lovers. For such children, Wormell hands us a remarkably satisfying tale of a girl and her dog living in an age that may or may not have yet discovered iron.
Perhaps the book takes place in the past. Perhaps in the far future. Whatever the case, this is the tale of a girl who lives all by herself with her dog. The girl doesn't go to school or wear shoes or have anyone living nearby. And though she and her pup catch fish and pick berries, roots, and bugs for their meals, she's lonely. One day in the snowy winter, the girl and her dog are out collecting firewood when they see tracks that work their way towards their cave. The animal isn't there when they arrive but they arm themselves in case it returns. Return it does. The enormous bear fills the cave entrance but leaves the child and canine almost immediately. It's then that the two realize that they are still not alone. From their little nest at the back of the cave emerges a baby bear cub. Frantically the girl attempts to relocate the mama bear, but must turn for home when she cannot locate her. Fortunately, who should be standing in the cave's entrance than the mother bear. "That winter, the cave high up on the mountainside was the snuggest, warmest place in all the wide wilderness," says the book as all three sleep contentedly together. "But by the spring, they all had fleas."
There's no denying that kids daydream of living in a world without grownups. The girl in this book almost fulfils a kind of ultimate fantasy. She gets to run around all day with her dog doing cool stuff like hunting and making fires. Of course, at the same time she's lonely, and the final image of her tucked snugly within the mama bear's fur (her hair almost one with the animal's thick brown pelt) is a deeply reassuring one. It seems to suggest that the girl has found a mother substitute. Of course, mother bears aren't so acquiescent as to leave their young anywhere near small girls and dogs without a fight. This is hardly a book about real world situations, but the reason why the bear leaves the cave with "strange, sad eyes" in the first place is never adequately explained.
Fortunately, at no point in this book is the art ever static or dull. Though Wormell limits his palette to browns, blue-purples, and the softest cream-colored pages, the images are always moving or filling up their pages with aplomb. When showing the girl going through her normal routine, the action breaks up into small vignettes. And when the girl looks across the valley for any sign of human life, we see sweeping vistas of purple-tipped mountains. Wormell can evoke snug and scary within a series of several frames. The watercolors are delicate and reflect the odd sweet little story perfectly.
It's always fun to try and guess what book might pair the best with a given title. The book I kept coming back to as I read "The Wild Girl" would have to be "Weslandia" by Kevin Hawkes. In both books a child creates their own singular society without parental interference/existence. Of course, this particular book has an appeal entirely of its own. Best read to the child that dreams of freedom and comfort in a single package.
A Fabulous Tale of Compassion.......2006-10-27
This is a really sweet tale of a young girl in the wilds of the world. With her little dog in tow, she comes upon a creature of the unknown and mistakenly bases her actions on fear and prejudice. Compassion wins the day and our small warrior comes to a greater understanding of the world and herself. This tale also touches on the values of individuality and the need for interdependence.

Book Description
These extraordinary photographs by two brothers, Anup and Manoj Shah, take the reader on a spectacular journey into the heart of the African savannah, concentrating on the Serengeti-Maasai Mara and Ngorongoro Crater regions in Kenya and Tanzania. The Shah brothers' breathtaking images chronicle life and death in one of the most fascinating and complex eco-systems in the world, a place left largely untouched by man. Here lions, giraffes, elephants, zebras, cheetahs, hippos, hyenas, baboons, wildebeests, and thousands of other species give birth, play, hunt, feed, groom, sleep, mate, migrate, and die in the dramatic scenes played out on these pages.
Anup Shah's text complements the images, starting with the most basic elements necessary for life on the savannah and gradually building up to the intricate, dynamic interactions between the plants and animals in the food chain and their environment. Every aspect of daily life is touched on: evolution and natural selection, sex and mating rituals, birth and motherhood, staying alive and getting along, predators and prey, herds and social groups. In the final chapters the reader discovers that in death all living things return to the soil, where it all began, thus completing the circle of life.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing photos of African wildlife: 5+ stars.......2006-11-22
These are simply amazing wildlife photos, all from East Africa, where the Shah brothers live. This large-format book is beautifully printed, and these photos are about as good as wildlife photography gets. Lots of everyone's favorite (mine anyway), baby animal photos! Now, almost anyone (even me) can take a cute photo of baby cheetahs in their furpunk soft-Mohawk glory. But the Shahs can photograph a baby *hippo* and make it look cuddly (p. 146)....
The Shahs have the unfair advantage of living in Kenya, so their photos represent literally years of fieldwork in their own backyard (big backyard!). Which wouldn't matter except that they may well be the finest photographers of East African wildlife so far. Astonishing work, absolutely not to be missed. I know, I'm stuck in superlative mode here, but these guys are really, really good, and Harry Abrams has done them up proud.
You've almost certainly seen some of the Shah's photographs, likely in National Geographic -- though if you're as oblivious as me, you may not have noticed their names. I've uploaded a couple of images to jog your memory. Most highly recommended for anyone who's interested in African wildlife. And yes, you should save up for a trip to East Africa someday....

Beautiful & Massive Documentation of Life on the Savannah........2004-07-09
Anup and Manoj Shah have distinguished themselves in the populous field of wildlife photography by producing expressive and beautiful portraits of wild animals that document the individuals' lives while achieving impressive aesthetic grace. Many of the brothers' photographs are simply unforgettable works of art that I never tire of looking at. "The Circle of Life" is a massive book that contains 235 photographs of wildlife on the African Savannah. About 40 species of mammal are represented, as well as some birds and reptiles. In the most comprehensive photographic essay of wildlife that I have ever seen, the Shah brothers document the lives of the many animals who live and die in this vast African ecosystem that spans much of Kenya and Tanzania. The authors have organized this photographic odyssey by dividing the book into 20 chapters, each showcasing one aspect of life on the Savannah. The early chapters show us the basic elements that create and sustain life. Some example chapters are: "Driven by Wet and Dry", "Light and Energy", and "Shaped by Fire and Elephants". The book then moves on to the subjects of birth and growing up on the Savannah. "Natural Selection", "Adaptation and Diversity", "Peaceful Coexistence", and "Mother and Offspring", for example. Then we see the lives of adult animals. Some examples are: "Herds and Social Groups", "Grazers and Browsers", and "The Hunters". And finally these animals die, returning to the earth, and the "circle of life" begins again: "Scavengers and Decomposers", "Land and Life". Each chapter begins with an essay written by Anup Shah that explains what that particular facet of life on the Savannah entails and how it fits into the greater life cycle.
The photographs in "The Circle of Life" are mostly one-to-a-page, but there are also 2-page spreads and pages containing two photographs. The reproduction quality is good. All photographs have detailed captions. An index in the back of the book allows the reader to locate text and photographs by species or topic. The index is most helpful considering the size of this volume. If you're familiar with the work of Anup and Manoj Shah through "Nature's Best" magazine, most, but not all, of their "Nature's Best" photographs are included in this book. "The Circle of Life" is a record of wildlife on the African Savannah that is impressive in its size, scope, and beauty. Only photographers who spend an extraordinary amount of time in this environment could have captured so much of the lives of so many species. It's a pleasure to see the results of Anup and Manoj Shah's experience and persistence in one volume. "The Circle of Life" is a fantastic coffee table book for nature photography fans, as well as a great visual resource for anyone studying this ecosystem.

In 1898 John H. Patterson arrived in East Africa with a mission to build a railway bridge over the Tsavo River. What started out as a simple engineering problem, however, soon took on almost mythical proportions as Patterson and his mostly Indian workforce were systematically hunted by two man-eating lions over the course of several weeks. During that time, 100 workers were killed, and the entire bridge-building project ground to a halt. As if the lions weren't enough, Patterson had to guard his back against his own increasingly hostile and mutinous workers as he set out to track and kill the man-eaters. This larger-than-life tale forms the basis of the entertaining film The Ghost and the Darkness, but for readers who want to know the whole--and true--story, The Man-Eaters of Tsavo comes straight from the great white-hunter's mouth.
Patterson's account of the lions' reign of terror and his own subsequent attempts to kill them is the stuff of great adventure, and his unmistakably Victorian manner of telling it only adds to the thrill. Consider this description of the aftermath of an attack by the lions: "...we at once set out to follow the brutes, Mr. Dalgairns feeling confident that he had wounded one of them, as there was a trail on the sand like that of the toes of a broken limb.... we saw in the gloom what we at first took to be a lion cub; closer inspection, however, showed it to be the remains of the unfortunate coolie, which the man-eaters had evidently abandoned at our approach. The legs, one arm and half the body had been eaten, and it was the stiff fingers of the other arm trailing along the sand which had left the marks we had taken to be the trail of a wounded lion...." This classic tale of death, courage, and terror in the African bush is still a page-turner, even after all these years.
Book Description
St. Martin's is proud to present a new series of the greatest classics in the literature of hunting and adventure, chosen from the personal library of writer and big game hunter Peter Hathaway Capstick. These showcase volumes will once again make available the true masterpieces of Africana to collectors, armchair hunters, sportsmen, and readers at large.
Considered one of the greatest man-eating sagas of all time, The Man-Eaters of Tsavo is the firsthand account of the infamous Tsavo lions. These lions-- who for nearly a year terrorized East Africa-- succeeded in bringing the construction of a railway line to a complete halt, and have been credited with the deaths of some one hundred people. Written by the legendary officer who shot these lions and risked death several times in the attempt, The Man-Eaters of Tsavo is not only the story of this breathtaking hunt, but of Lieutenant-Colonel Patterson's other adventures in the African bush.
"I think that the incident of the Uganda man-eating lions...is the most remarkable account of which we have any record."--Theodore Roosevelt

It is with feelings of the greatest diffidence that I place the following pages before the public; but those of my friends who happen to have heard of my rather unique experiences in the wilds have so often urged me to write an account of my adventures, that after much hesitation I at last determined to do so.

Classic Tail of Adventure.......2007-09-04
If you liked the Ghost and the Darkness you will like this book. The first half of the book Patterson recounts the trails and tribulation of hunting the to man eating lions. Patterson does this in a very British and Victorian why, yet it remains easily readable and hold your attention quite well. The second half of the book Patterson recount several other exciting hunting adventures he had while in Africa. All of them quite interesting and worth reading. Patterson's tails are grab your attention and hold you throughout the book.

Victorian adventure literature at its finest.......2007-01-23
If you like Victorian writing, if you like tales of adventure, and if you don't mind self-aggrandizing and possibly exaggerated reading, then this is the book for you. Colonel John Patterson's enormous imperial endeavour - building a bridge for the "lunatic line" across Africa - brings him into contact with a pair of man-eating lions. The story never lacks imaginative story-telling, and neither does it lack that Victorian-esque spirit of conquest (in all things) and patriarchal service to the 'noble savage.' Yet it is a wonderful story, perhaps popularised by the movie, and it will certainly stir nostalgic imaginations for years to come.
Wonderful First-Hand Account of Life in Africa.......2006-11-11
I was prompted to buy this book after seeing Jeff Corwin reading it on "The Corwin Experience." I thoroughly enjoyed it although toward the end I was getting a little tired of hearing about Patterson's hunting expeditions.
It's a window into a different time and place. And then there are the lions!
