Book Description
This beautiful book focuses on Laurelton Hall, Louis Comfort Tiffany’s extraordinary country estate in Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York. Beginning in 1902, Tiffany (1848–1933) designed every aspect of the immense home, which had eighty-four rooms and eight levels, and extensive grounds into which the house was carefully integrated. Tiffany’s residential masterpiece was also a quasi-museum, for he filled it with his own works—windows, glassware, pottery, enamels, lamps, oil paintings, and watercolors—as well as with objects from his collections of Islamic, Asian, and Native American art.
Laurelton Hall burned down in 1957, but about ten years earlier most of its contents had been removed and sold. Every aspect of the estate is examined and re-created in this volume: its terraced gardens with fountains and pools; the many outbuildings; and Tiffany’s life there. The interior decoration of Laurelton Hall, a particular focus of the book, is represented by both numerous period photographs and newly commissioned color photography of surviving artworks and salvaged architectural components from the estate. For all who admire Tiffany and his work, this book presents a unique portrait of his remarkable home.

This is an excellent and scholarly book filled with incredible photos and descriptions of LCT's home, Laurelton Hall. The author has written a series of fine chapters that look at all aspects of this magnificent residence. What the fire at Laurelton destroyed, this book restores with words and photos. For all of you who love Tiffany's artistry, this book is not to be missed!

Overall, a Great Collection..........2006-01-30
The Complete Country Blues Guitar Book has tabs for a wide variety of blues styles, including Delta, Rag, Texas, and bottleneck. The one point that keeps me from rating it 5 stars is the CDs, one of which was defective. I contacted Mel Bay Publishing by e-mail, advised them of the problem, and they promptly sent me a replacement along with a nice apology. That issue aside, I am very pleased with the overall collection. Get this if blues is your thang...
Excellent.......2003-09-04
I haven't played guitar for about ten years, and got this book to get myself back into it. It's great, I can't put it down, and I'm actually learning the pieces!
Defintely recommended, but not for a complete beginner.
A Treasury of Country Blues Guitar Styles.......2003-07-29
Stefan Grossman has been the world authority on fingerstyle blues guitar for decades now, and this book is the biggest compendium of his work as an educator. He tabs out fifty-seven (fifty-seven!) songs in a variety of styles and tunings, enough to keep any student busy for a year or more.
This isn't so much a method book--though I taught myself to play country blues from it--as a large tab compendium with helpful tips about each song. Each song has at least one fully-transcribed verse. Many have intros and outros, and some are complete arrangements. Most of the book covers the alternating bass and ragtime traditions of the Memphis and Piedmont blues, but there are seven Delta tunes, and excellent seven-song chapter on Texas blues, and even a good number of bottleneck tunes. Most of the songs are old standards ("Crow Jane","Vestapol","Hard Time Killin' Floor") taken from the original recordings by artists like Reverend Gary Davis, Mance Liscomb, and Blind Blake.
The "handwritten" tab is large and easy to read--you'll never be able to go back to that tiny Hal Leonard/Guitar Player tab after this. There are lots of photos of old bluesmen as well as atmospheric old-South pictures from the Library of Congress collection. It's so attractive I keep it on my coffee table. The CDs feature Grossman playing the tabbed arrangements (and then some) as well as original Blind Lemon Jefferson tracks. They're listenable in their own right, even if you aren't learning the guitar!
If you're interested in pre-war blues guitar, and you already known how to play five or six chords (remember, this book teaches country blues, not guitar), this is easily the best bang for your music buying buck.

A LIFE CHANGING READ.......2007-05-29
Growing up in Northern Virginia I always had a vague sense of the crab's popularity, both for dining and as a sort of a local mascot for people who live near the Bay. However, I had only eaten them at my aunt's house in Benedict, MD. and thought them to be strange and hard to eat. They made me feel inferior some how not knowing the technique and how exactly my aunt was able to come up with these bushels during the warm summer months. I dedicated last summer to learning all about the Bay and the blue crab and the wonderful people who make a living off them. I was transformed with the knowledge from the book that explains so many details about the life of the crab, the watermen and their families. The author is so creative with the insights he reveals. After reading this book, I am equipped to speak intelligently about the geographical areas, crab industry and most importantly-how to get and eat these beautiful swimmers!
Attention to Detail.......2006-06-03
Whereas I found this book to be quite informative, the author's attention to detail about every aspect and apparatus of a waterman's life on the Cheasapeake Bay to be a bit much. I found it difficult to find interest in how many eel baits were used on a trotline and how close together they were spaced. Not being well versed on the parts of various fishing vessels, I found myself lost as to what the author was writing about not to mention the numerous detailed descriptions of every piece of fishing apparatus employed by watermen.
Beautiful Swimmers.......2005-08-18
Beautiful Swimmers was given to me by a relative mixed in with a number of Bay-related books(including Tom Horton's Island Out of Time and several others).
Often, environmental writers stand the risk of in a way reducing the Bay to merely some sort of ecological experiment. Some I have read do not take into account that every little change in the Bay, whether the fault of Mother Nature or ourselves, drastically affects the people whose entire livelihood is fished out of these waters. Fortunately, the author(s) of Beautiful Swimmers does not fall into that trap.
The Watermen have a unique love affair with the Blue Crab. As evidenced by my own home town's "Hard Crab Derby" celebration ever year. This book, I think, gives a very fair and honest portrayal of these seemingly simple people with seemingly simple lives. Its handling of carcinological matters is anything but boring, including an in-detail description of how the crabs make love.
I would highly suggest this work not only for its informative value but for its treatment of the inherant poetry and beauty of the Bay. Even at the time of its publishing, the downward trend in the Bay's health was growing more evident. Today the situation is even more precarious, and requires a very delicate balance between the health of the Bay that supports so many and the people themselves, whose lives have been spent gleaning from these once bountiful waters an income, and who keep alive the traditions of Watermen from over four centuries ago.
Let us protect the Bay, this precious resource of ours, but we must not forget about the people.
Once again, an exceptional book, and one that I recommend for anyone interested in the Conservation of the Chesapeake Bay and the people that depend upon it.
Entertaining and Educational.......2005-01-03
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I spent summers as a kid catching crabs and seeing commercial crabbers outside my grandparents' home but there was a lot about the industry and the bay that I didn't know. I felt like an eavesdropper on an unfamiliar yet familiar world as I read this book, and found my curiousity awakened. The writers clear appreciation for his subject shines through, and it is a delight to discover even many years after it was written.
It Takes You There...........2004-11-16
Beautiful Swimmers will make you feel like you are a part of growing up in the Chesapeake Bay region. If you already did so, it will bring you back home.
Beautiful Swimmers serves as excellent literature for a multitude of readers: naturalists, historians, travellers, and folks who enjoy reading a good novel. It also provides a good blend of natural and cultural resource history.
I moved to the Chesapeake Bay area (Deale, MD) several years ago and was referred to Beautiful Swimmers by several members of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Prior to reading Beautiful Swimmers, I grew extremely fond of living on the bay. Since reading the book, I have that much more appreciation for the culture of the bay.

There may be an error in the product description - but this is still a GREAT book!.......2007-05-30
There may be an error in the product description - I don't think Larry McCabe was involved in this book. That aside, THIS IS A GREAT BOOK! Authors John McClellan and Deyan Bratic have crafted an amazing resource, featuring transcriptions ranging from Chet's earliest arrangements to his (in our opinion) best work in his final 2-CD set Chet Atkins - Solo Sessions
Beautiful, informative, and well put together........2007-03-15
If you are a Chet fan these transcriptions are a must have. Thorough and concise transcriptions of many of his lesser known pieces are included, as well as insight from the people with whom he collaborated throughout his long and versatile career. I highly reccommend Vol. 1 of this pairing as well. Buy them both, you won't be disappointed!

Customer Reviews:
Easy to use, but limited scope and Francocentric.......2007-08-13
What I like about this book is that it's very user-friendly, especially for the City itself. The reader can quickly glance through a neighborhood, and readily find the restaurants' basic price category, food category, "fanciness" (or "category" as they put it), phone number, fax, website, hours/days open, and location on a map. For those of us used to the European guides, this guide goes into far more detail than the European ones--whole paragraphs describe each restaurant and hotel.
The long descriptions, however, seem to hide the fact that this guide is very limited in scope. I feel it's a bit much to say that this is a "Bay Area" guide when only 16 pages (each describing only one or two restaurants) are devoted to the entire East Bay, for example. There are a million people living in Contra Costa County, and 1 1/2 million living in Alameda County, yet only two cities in that entire region are discussed: Oakland and Berkeley. There are also only two hotels listed in this area: the Claremont and the Washington Inn in Oakland. For areas south of San Francisco, only three hotels are mentioned, all in San Jose, and only two in Marin county: Casa Madrona and the Inn Above the Tide, both in Sausalito.
My other major beef with this guide is its Franco-centric opinions. I went to the Bistro Jeanty in Yountville based on its receiving a Michelin Star. Having lived in France for over 4 years, the food there certainly did remind me of a meal one might find in a country restaurant in the south of France. The recipes there were quite standard, however, and the quality of the ingredients nothing to write home about. No way did I find the food there as good as that of Domaine Chandon in the same town. Not only are the menu items at D.C. more unique and obviously carefully tested by trained chefs, but the quality of the ingredients at Domaine Chandon is also superior. I do not even consider the food quality of those two places to be in the same class. Other unstarred restaurants in the area which I considered to be substantially better than Bistro Jeanty include Brix, Mustards Grill, and Tra Vigne. Just because they serve California or Italian cuisine rather than French does not make them inferior.
I should also mention the guide's most famous controversy: giving Chez Pannise (California cuisine) only one star. This restaurant is widely regarded by multiple food critics as one of the best restaurants in the country. The only restaurant deemed worthy of three stars is called... hmm... French Laundry.
I hope subsequent editions broaden the scope of coverage, and also broaden the idea of what constitutes quality cuisine, since I do like the format of the guide. Good quality isn't measured by how closely the food resembles French cooking. And there are two and a half million of us living on the other side of the Bay with lots of good restaurants. "Bay Area" refers to more than the City and wine country...
Zagat is better.......2007-07-16
Always good to get another view on Bay Area restaurants, but one could argue with a lot of their ratings. And the descriptions don't help, restaurants with one star have identical descriptors to restaurants with none. What is unique that drove the ratings???
Useful dining guide.......2007-01-14
Easy to use and evaluate but there must be a limit to how many possible candidate restaurants and hotels could be visited by inspectors and hence few "discoveries" could be made. The area covered is just right for both residents and visitors to the Bay Area. South to include Paso Robles should be considered.
A Good Debut.......2007-01-11
This is a successful launch of Michelin's coverage of the San Francisco Bay Area. As can be expected from any Michelin Guide this has very useful information, including colored street maps, a comprehensive listing and commentary of major hotels and restos. I recommend this guide to visitors to the Bay Area. I would hope, though, that future editions would have more depth and insights to the region's real jewel, its high quality neighborhood restos.
Culinary traveler.......2007-01-09
There are many excellant restaurants in the Bay area. The Red Guide is the most respected guide to plan your trip. It has everything that the experienced culinary traveler expects to know.
I hope Michelin will expand these guides to the rest of the USA just like France.
Book Description
This guide has it all: Italy's most desirable vacation destination is the subject of one of Cadogan's bestsellers on both sides of the Atlantic. Along with color photographs and maps, this new edition contains the most up-to-the-minute practical information and listings. Cadogan explores the home of pizza, seeking out the pleasures of chic Positano and the Amalfi Coast, where Mount Vesuvius towers over the fantasy garden frescoes of Pompeii; the ravishing landscape of Capri; and vibrant Naples, with its world-famous restaurants and nightlife. Aside from the bright lights of the islands and the coast, the guide covers the inland regions of Southern Italy casual tourists rarely see: the mountain plateaux of rugged Calabria, Puglia, with its flavors of Greece and Africa, and remote Basilicata, the province of Matera, made a World Heritage Site for its astonishing neighborhoods of cave homes.

hidden treasures.......2007-02-01
Though Naples and the Amalfi Coast are better treated, the rest of southern Italy typically receives short shrift from the writers of travel guides, probably because this lovely region is less geared toward tourism. This Cadogan guide goes a long way toward ameliorating the problem. While covering the more obvious highlights, the authors also dig and delve into the details that bring interest and a sense of intrigue to almost any given site. Wit and humor further enliven the text, which reads more like story than guide. Where else would the traveller encounter the tale of the ancient witches' sabbath on the banks of the River Sabato, or discover the most beautiful rose window in Italy, at Troia? If you are a serious traveller, don't go to southern Italy without this gem of a resource.

Why half a crab .......2005-09-07
Its a Nice book to round out a collection about the subject .
On the down side while the crab illustrations are really nice they are only half done .Crabs have different crusher and pincer claws ,while only showing one gives you the spirit of the animal it is still not showing the other aspect .
A great guide, but not what many expect.......2000-09-19
This book, "A Field Guide to the Atlantic Seashore" is a great field guide. It presents an excellent overview of the life one commonly finds along the Atlantic coast of the USA. The book is arranged taxonomically, and each entry contains a description of characters useful in determining what you are looking at. As a professional biologist, I find this book to be superior in many ways to the Audubon Guides. For example, this Peterson guide includes both common AND scientific names by each entry, the book is arranged taxonomically rather than by other less important characters like color, etc.
This book is not, however, what many casual naturalists are looking for in a field guide. They often look for a book filled by page after page of photographs or illustrations. This book is filled by page after page of information more useful to the more advanced amateur or to the professional. There are several illustrations, many are simple line drawings that show details of important characteristics used to tell one kind of organism from another.
All in all a great field guide for the advanced amateur and professional. This is not, however, a book that is as likely to be embraced by the casual observer.
5 stars for the more professional audience, but 4 stars for the casual observer.
You might be happiest doing what another reviewer suggested... to use this book along with a photo field guide such as an Audubon Field guide to the region.
Happy splashing!

For all lovers of the Atlantic coast.......2000-06-06
saboettger@yahoo.com. The Peterson field identification guide to the Atlantic Seashore by Kenneth L. Gosner is a useful tool in fieldwork. Seaweeds and animals are arranged taxonomically and described in detail regarding their distinguishing characteristics. All weeds and animals are called by both their scientific and common name and are described in an easily understood manner. The plates with drawings of creatures found along the Atlantic seashore are helpful to establish visual identification of seaweeds and animals. It is useful that the book explains different marine habitats that you may encounter as well as going into detail on important physical marine features such as water currents, salinity, tides etc. The details on how to maintain and preserve animals are an additional plus of this book. The Peterson field guide is a good tool for the use in class as well as for you personal exploration of the seashore. I would recommend its use in combination with the Audubon Guide to Shore Animals of North America. These books would complement each other since the Audubon Guide displays a similar identification system but enhances it with pictures of animals rather than drawings. The combined use of these books would increase the accuracy of your identification.

Book Description
Those who know and love the Chesapeake will find the bay they treasure on the pages of Water's Way: Life along the Chesapeake. The story of one of North America's most fascinating regions unfolds through the sensitive photographs and prose of two men who have studied the Chesapeake all their lives. Photographer David W. Harp and writer Tom Horton vividly portray how, as Horton writes, "the edges where land and water meet charm us all, from watermen to watercolorists and beachcombers to duck hunters."
Water's Way will guide you to "those rare, hidden nooks of the bay country where nature still appears as glorious and untrammeled as it did a thousand years ago." It will also take you to less hidden, but equally intriguing sites within the Chesapeake's reach as Harp and Horton depict the worlds of both nature and humans.
An intimate knowledge of and an unwavering reverence for the bay pervade Water's Way. Harp and Horton are as attuned to the romance that still clings to the Chesapeake as they are to the realities that inspire and threaten it. In a time when the region faces tremendous changes and challenges, Water's Way is neither strident nor sentimental. Rather, it is suffused with the fundamental respect for the bay which Harp and Horton see as key to its survival.
"Dave Harp's photography and Tom Horton's text are nothing short of inspirational. Through the combination of each man's art, Water's Way communicates the beauty and essence of the Chesapeake like no other book. It conveys the very reasons why I have dedicated my life's work to saving the bay."--William Baker, President, Chesapeake Bay Foundation
"Three forces have been hard at work in the making of this exquisite piece: the gentle and informed eye of Dave's camera, Tom's inspirited love affair with our language, and the mystery they conspire in, creating a vivid picture and genuine portrait of a life that is greater than ourselves."--Tom Wisner, author of Chesapeake Born
"Harp's photographs, gorgeously reproduced here... have, I think, finally surpassed the late Aubrey Bodine's famously romantic shots of the Chesapeake."--John Goodspeed, Easton Star-Democrat
"Tom Horton has a poet's touch and a realist's frankness as he writes of the delicate ecology of this great aquatic system in chapters whose subjects range from the role of marshes to the life of the watermen to the growing pressures of urban development... This book is a singing tribute to the bay."--Islands Magazine

Review of Water's Way.......2000-08-12
Water's Way is a stunningly photographed, and exquisitely written glimpse of life in the Chesapeake region. The book celebrates beauty, both in the natural and human worlds. Author Tom Horton's essays are insightful, humorous, and well-crafted. His words flow like the many creeks and rivers that he describes on the Delmarva peninsula. Dave Harp's photography defines the people, animals, and landscape in such concert with Horton's words that the book should be considered the National Geographic of the Eastern Shore. This a worthy addition to anyone's coffee table.

Best country guitar book out there!!.......2007-06-27
Despite its slim 100 pages this little book packs more instruction and song tablature than any other country book I've come across. Most country books focus too much on modern Nashville style playing. Sokolow goes back to the roots, giving an in-depth guide to Carter picking, bluegrass lead and rhythm, Doc Watson style playing etc. The song selection and arrangements are brilliant, including many well-known tunes and popular classics ranging in level from beginner to country-wizard. The only word of caution I would utter is that Sokolow chooses to sing over quite a lot of tracks over the CD and he is certainly no Whitney Houston. On the other hand the singing lets you get a good feel for the melody of the song and can be turned off through the fader on your player anyway.
nice book!.......2007-03-10
This book works its way through a number of C/W guitar styles. It starts rather slowly, with rhythm patterns for strumming, then on to carter-style country rhythm style ... once you've got these two down, you can strum along to almost any trad country tune out there. Then it moves on to bluegrass backup (fun!!), acoustic flatpicking leads, fingerpicking, rockabilly, and ends with electric lead styles like you often hear on Merle Haggard or Waylon Jennings records.
Certainly worth picking up if you want to beef up your country playing skills. Starts off slow enough to not scare you right out of the gate, but enough beef to keep even an advanced player interested.
