Customer Reviews:
a must for every little boy's library.......2007-10-17
This darling story should be in every little boy's room! It's cute when read to a girl, but the main character is a little "he". Cute artistry makes it great for early childhood reading and story line keeps it fun for older kids. There is a real universiality in this one!!
Delightful Story.......2007-09-24
I recently organized my sister's baby shower and the theme was Peas in the Pod. Since we had a few kids coming to the shower we had both adult and kids souveniers. Each child got this wonderful book as a souvenier and all the adults were so happy and impressed. The story is very refreshing and the kids loved it. If your child does not like to eat vegetables then you should get this book.
The Best book of 2007.......2007-07-12
This book is adorable, My three and one and half yr old love it!! What a simple story that can be applied to everyday eating frusterations.
If you don't have it, buy it! I got it from the libary had to have a copy for ourselves, we read it every night!!!
Pure Fun.......2007-06-25
This book is pure fun. I buy it for every child I know because I just can't get enough of it. The illustrations are adorable, the story is cute and even educational.

Great for a Little House fan.......2007-09-20
As a big fan of the Little House books I was really excited to get this cook book. It is full of great info and is good for learning about how they cooked (and what they cooked) in the past. I wouldn't plan on using it as a day to day cook book, but for something fun or to understand the Little House books better, it's a great buy.
The Little House Cookbook.......2007-08-11
Fantastic! I am a docent at an 1800's prairie settlement and I use some of the recipes in the summer kitchen. The lemonade was recently a big hit!
Lot's of fun.......2007-01-11
This book is a lot of fun for the people who love food, the little house on the prairie, and the readings of Laura Ingalls Wilder.
With this it also has the extra of being a cook book with some great finger licking old fashion food.
The Little House Cookbook.......2006-11-04
Interesting and informative as to how people in Laura Ingalls time ate. The struggles of providing in those times involved far more than just running to the corner market. Nothing was wasted, everything had a use and the whole family became involved with the work. To eat in those days was work intensive. The book opens up a new appreciation for what we have now.
I love LH books but..........2005-11-08
I love LH books and read them before there was a TV show- I remember how at age 10 I enjoyed reading about Laura and Mary in the Big woods and how facinating it was to read about playing in the attic among all the food and goods the family had in storage. Laura Ingalls Wilder was so decriptive about the foods and acitivities of her childhood that it made you hungry for what they were about to eat and you felt a part of what was going on.
I am an avid reader and a history major and found the "Frontier Foods" book boring.
I was looking forward to using the kitchen to help get my children interested in history.I was disappointed with this book - Since it is called a cook book I was expecting a more recipes, of foods from the past. What I received was a book about a settler's life but much less interesting than the LH books. Also, the book has a good number of Garth Williams wonderful illustrations but it could have used more, since it is supposed to be a cook book for children.
Book Description
When five curious young gefilte fish have the chutzpah to sneak out of their jar and set off to explore the world, they are followed by a loud OY VEY!ÂMama Gefilte isnÂ't too happy to see her little ones leaving the nest. But sheÂ's taught them well, and at the end of their adventures, each one proves himself a menschÂmaking Mama one proud gefilte indeed.
Dave HorowitzÂ's playful rhyming tale, its illustrations packed with comic asides, will have readers giggling out loud and looking for opportunities to practice their YiddishÂwith help from the handy glossary at the end of the book.
Customer Reviews:
Five Little Gefiltes.......2007-08-06
Five little smiling Gefilte fish balls wearing top hats (one is always whistling) greet us on the cover of this amusing parody of the "Five Little Ducks" song. They go out daily from their jar to experience city life, bouncing down the wrought iron fire escape, "taking in a play", swimming in the bay "crashing the deli buffet", an getting "shlepped away" in a yellow taxi. Unfortunately for Mama Gefilte, one less gefilte returns each day, causing her to cry out "OY VEY" in consternation, until they all return happily to where the babushka-wearing Mama fish ball sits on her park bench. She stops kvetching, and now kvells with happiness. The funny asides on signage and within the illustrations are clever inside Yiddish jokes for the older crowd, but the book stands on its own as a delightful frolic through New York's Jewish scene. This book needs to be sung--the zanier the better! Share with some kids ASAP--just avoid serving Gefilte fish to those who won't appreciate it!
My two year old shouts "Oy Vey" with gusto!.......2007-06-02
I overheard an amused mom reading this aloud to her daughter and then, after they put it down, I grabbed it and bought it. We love reading it aloud and my kids shout "oy vey" which cracks me up! I also love having them try out some of the yiddish words that are funny flourishes throughout the book.
Amusing!.......2007-03-13
Dave Horowitz, Five Little Gefiltes (Putnam, 2007)
It probably says something about my upbringing that until I read the PW and SLJ reviews of Five Little Gefiltes, I'd never heard of Five Little Ducklings. So consider this as the review of what seems to be the only person on the planet who's never read Five Little Ducklings and act accordingly.
I thought it was great. Not so much because of the story, which is basic kids'-book fare, but because of the illustrations. Horowitz is a sight-gag guy, and he fills each panel here with great puns, some background Yiddish (there's a glossary in the back for those of us who've never heard some of the words before), and incidental characters who have just as much visual appeal (and distinction) as his little gefiltes. Who are pretty funny guys for being fish-flavored matzo balls in hats. I'm not sure whether this book will help you convince your kids to eat gefilte fish-- hell, I'm not sold on trying the things myself-- but it's a fun ride all the same. ***

Customer Reviews:
Pleased.......2006-12-02
I ordered this book based on other good reviews. Although this book is a little difficult to use (measurements, strange ingredients, lack of specific guidelines for daily feeding portions), it is quite charming. The writing style and the little pictures are worth the price of the book. Once I figure out exactly how much to feed my 95lb. GSD and my 40lb. special breed...and what the heck "offal" is...I will use some of the recipes. Overall, I am quite pleased to add this cool little book to my collection of books for dogs and cooks.
Food for Puppy Thoughts!.......2000-02-06
I found this book to be one of the best for doggie recipes. I take in strays and they ALL love the recipes. Not being much of a cook myself I found these easy to follow and also very quick to the feeding bowl. Now guys......where is my kittie dining book for all my meow meows. At this very moment they smell puppy food and want some. Great book! Now, where's my kittie one to match?
Simple, down-to-earth feeding solutions that work........1999-11-03
I bought this book because my 3 year old, spayed Chihuahua was overweight, licked continually and lacked her old level of energy. Within two days of providing recipe #4, along with a Linolenic supplement, her licking stopped. (She had been on anti-itch drugs for months and they didn't work). Also within two days she adapted to the 5 PM feeding schedule I set forth and does not typically beg for a treat (unless I am having something she really loves). Until her weight is normalized, I will give no snacks. Even healthy ones. Some of the ingredients mentioned are not always found in North American homes, but determining an adequate substitute is not difficult. Missy has been on homemade food now for three weeks. Her hair is growing back, now that the licking has stopped, and is shiny and soft. She has dropped a little weight and has much more energy. This book is great as a basic guide to canine nutrition. The ingredient ratios are important to follow and are not complex to figure out. Creating your own recipes after reading this book is a snap. Cooking the food is fun and easy. Missy loves the warm meal every day and eats it all, every time. I weigh every meal to assure she is not overfed or shortchanged. I will never go back to commercial dog food.
There is missing documentation from this book........1999-02-17
While this book is absolutely full of common sense and seeming authenticity about doggie nutrition and habits, we need to know about the pedigree of the writer! Is he a vet? How does he know such detailed information? For example, daily feeding of 4.4 g protein, 1.3 g fat and 10.1 g carbohydrates per 1kg doggie weight is recommended. I'm usually willing to go along with such advice when I know it's source of authority. Another very significant omission - I would like a list of artists and titles for the wonderful prints included in the book, some are familiar, some not, but all are quite interesting. Isn't such credit to sources mandatory?
In summary, the recipes were good, this reader wants more information!
A great book for the true dog lover.......1997-10-12
As many of you may know, I now have close to 500 different cookbooks. This week, however, I am reviewing on of the more unusual in my collection. This cookbook was originally published in 1992 in Czech. In 1996 it was re-published in Spanish and now in 1997 in English.
Jaroslav Weigel has written a book that is a must for the true dog lover. A Little Recipe Book For Dogs is a book that advertises being sound and nutrition and good home cooking for your pet. Published by Ballantine Books, this cookbook is a unique way to feed your dog for the best in nutrition.
The recipes are provided with both ounces and pound as well as grams and kilos, and each recipe also provides for difference sized dogs. With only about 35 recipes the book is small, yet who many recipes do you really need for your pooch.
Recipes include Boiled Beef, Rice, Vegetables, and Egg; Beef, Pasta, Vegetables; Pig's or Ox Heart, Pasta, Dry Dog Food; Beef, Pig's liver, Oatmeal, Rice, Processed Cheese; Steamed Mackerel, Pasta, Root Vegetable; Baked Ground Beef, Pasta, Cheese, Egg, Raw Carrot; Cottage Cheese, Whole-grain Bread, Hard Cheese; Oatmeal, Apple, Hard Cheese; and Yogurt with Dog Biscuits.
A Little Recipe Book for Dogs also offers some nutritional information that is important for the care and well being of your best friend.
If you are looking for a unique way to feed your dog the healthiest foods possible, Jaroslav Weigel's A little Recipe Book for Dogs is certainly a book t have. Makes a great gift

cool and quirky board book.......2007-05-07
My one year old son loves this board book! We actually have the entire series. It's fun and creative, and I don't have to worry about him ripping the pages. We are hooked!
So much fun..........2007-01-18
This is a fun book to read and the pictures are interesting as well! It has become a family favorite. The back cover describes the dishes in detail so if you don't know what a chitlin is, don't worry!
Yummy!.......2005-12-13
I purchased this book for my nephew's first New Year's Day gift last year. The subject matter was perfect. In our family (ex-southerners) we always serve up a BIG, traditional Southern meal on New Year's Day. All of the foods depicted in this book are familiar to us. From okra and hush puppies to cornbread and 'nana pudding. What a great idea for a toddler book, and the paper collage/fiber art is pretty good too. A great way to introduce your little one to Southern cuisine and culture.
great addition to the series.......2004-04-05
After being a little disappointed with Yum Yum Dim Sum, I was so happy to read through A Little Bit of Soul Food. My kids love it too. We just moved to the South from California....the sushi and Mexican food depicted in Sanger's earlier books were familiar to us and we enjoyed reading about our favorite foods. Now we have another book of familiar yummy foods to read about!
The backgrounds are inspired by Gee's Bend quilts, a treat for the fiber-art lovers out there.

A comforting feast for the eyes and stomach!.......2006-09-21
The book has wonderful recipes we all remember eating. The recipes include ingredients one can get anywhere. The artwork is also special. I didn't see a single "weird" recipe and felt "comfort" even looking at the pictures. If you want "cutting edge", don't buy this book. If you want to make simple food you can cook without a cooking class and make food everyone will actually love, you found the right book. I may have some of these recipes in other books, but not within one book so beautifully illustrated.

Little Miss Spider
ASIN: 0439260922 |
Amazon.com
From the creator of Miss Spider (Little Miss Spider, Miss Spider's New Car, Miss Spider's Tea Party, etc.) comes a new series featuring a sweet little bird. On the verge of independence, little bird, Biddle bird takes the plunge out of the nest and into the world to find a snack. But what's good to eat? Something squashy and salty like a slug? Something crunchy and sweet like a pea pod? "Is a flower a good meal? Will a bug be a treat? Don't gobble up tidbits you find in the street!"
From a protective distance, the proud mommy bird watches as her baby begins to pull a meal together for the first time. Readers get the feeling she will be there in a flash if her little bird ventures into the danger zone--for example, when he remembers never to choose meals "that are bigger than you!" But meanwhile, she's content to observe her "dear little big Biddle bird." Young readers will vicariously feel little bird's sense of accomplishment, especially as they begin exploring their own new horizons. David Kirk's shiny, in-your-face illustrations burst off the page, familiar to fans of Miss Spider, but almost too overwhelming for those who prefer kinder, gentler images. (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
Little Bird is hungry! Mommy always feeds him, but now the time has arrived for Little Bird to venture from the nest and find a tasty bite to eat on his own. As Little Bird finds his way around Biddle Wood, he wisely remembers the lessons his mother—who is watching from afar—has taught him. Never choose meals that are bigger than you! How proud she is of her biddle bird when he finally finds a snack. Young children and their parents will delight in this sweet, reassuring story about exploring one’s own independence.

Parents beware! It's almost too good!.......2006-08-07
We picked this book up at a tag sale when my [...] was about 5 months old. It's her all time favorite book and she wants to read it constantly, over and over again. Between my husband, [...] daughter, and me, we each read it to her 3-5 times a day unless we hide it! It's falling apart, we don't need to look at the text anymore when we read it. Of all the books that she loves like this it's one of our favorites, too. It's a sweet simple story about those first steps children take towards independence, even when mama is close by. The illustrations are beautiful with vivid colors.
AWESOME.......2002-09-10
A friend from Washington sent me this book for my daughters 1st year birthday, she also sent me the stuffed animal bird. My daughter adores this book and so do I. It is poetic and follows a rythm that makes it fun to read and fun for the child to hear. I have found my 6 year old and 7 year old slowly sliding onto the couch to listen to me read it too.
Will be a classic.......2002-07-10
My son has enjoyed this book since he was one and is now 2 1/2. It is the first book he requests at night. It's message of independence, but security, should be an inspiration to other children's authors. It also has a bit of humour and the shiny, colorful pages are made of a material hard to tear - every aspect very well thought out. It will be hard for the rest of the series to live up to this one.
Great for VERY young "readers".......2001-11-27
This is the first book I bought for my son, who is now 5 months old. He and I both love it, and I read it to him almost every day. My 12 year-old daughter pretends to hate it, but I've caught her reading it to him, too. It's just a great little book. I will keep it forever.
