Product Description
Harmonious Environment: Beautify, Detoxify & Energize Your Life, Your Home & Your Planet, by Norma Lehmeier Hartie, is an indispensable reference book for anyone who cares about their health and well being and for the future of the planet. Hartie concisely covers a wide range of subjects and includes a comprehensive listing of advisory organizations, product and service resources. Part I of the book, Banish the Ugly from Your Life, is a blueprint for green, sustainable living. Discover how to replace toxic and unsustainable products from household cleaners to food (including recipes) to furniture to personal care products with safe, eco-friendly ones. Hartie is the tough but motivational Life Coach in her approach to cleaning, removing clutter and on organizing the home or office. Part II, Bring in the Beautiful to Create a Harmonious Environment and Self, includes a chapter on Earth-based spirituality and a fascinating look at the Four Elements (Earth, Fire, Air and Water) and the Medicine Wheel. The core of Hartie s philosophy blossoms in Chapter Seven, Applying Harmonious AdjustmentsTM: Using Feng Shui and Other Techniques for Powerful Results. Unlike other Feng Shui authors, Hartie has experience as a designer and her skills are apparent in this chapter and the following two. She has combined principles of Feng Shui, the Four Elements, color, energy, Vastu, and good design principles that create a unique and eclectic approach to home decorating. Finally, Hartie provides guidance on how to manifest personal or professional desires. In Part III, Putting the Pieces Together, Hartie skillfully integrates the many subjects of the book into a unified and cohesive whole. At its cover price of $19.95, Harmonious Environment is a value alone for the comprehensive green living product suppliers in the Resources section. What makes this book so truly ambitious, however, is what lies beneath the surface. In a sense, this book is only marginal

Transform Your Home into a Peaceful Sanctuary.......2007-04-10
"The energy from flowers is so bright and strong that they can be put anywhere in the home and they will enhance your life." ~ pg. 217
Norma Lehmeier Hartie is a design consultant and Harmonious Adjustment practitioner who enjoys gardening and cooking. She created the practice of Harmonious Adjustments to give her clients the chance to reconnect with nature and to manifest their personal and professional dreams. Through her book she introduces ideas for detoxing and decluttering your home environment.
If you want a happier, healthier lifestyle that is more in harmony with nature, then Norma Lehmeier Hartie's book has a world of information to make this possible. She can help you:
Remove toxic products from your home and garage
Clean and organize your home
Buy environmentally friendly cleaning products
Organize your home for more peace and harmony
Find healthy personal care products
Grow plants that help to control pollution - A list of the Fifty Best Houseplants
Find the best choices in flooring
Figure out how to recycle larger items like a refrigerator
Cook more safely and use kitchen scraps for your garden
Formulate a plan to keep your house clean
Organize every room in the house
Decorate with Confidence
Reading through the list of harmful products gives you an idea of the ingredients to avoid in cleaners and how they can affect your health. For an antibacterial spray, the author suggests water and essential oils and for cleaning silver she also suggests more natural solutions like baking soda and vinegar. Using Borax and water is less dangerous than chlorine bleach fumes and you may want to try this in your shower. You may enjoy products by Seventh Generation.
Chapter three felt a little out of my personal range of expertise, although we know that thoughts can affect our environment and life and can move our life in a positive or negative direction. This chapter deals more with spiritual practices. Chapter 6 also delves into a deeper connection with nature, personality types and elemental powers. The list of Yin and Yang is helpful to create a balance of the two in your home. An entire chapter is also dedicated to plants, gemstones and crystals.
"If you are the average American woman, you expose yourself to over two hundred synthetic chemicals that are found in the products you use as you prepare yourself for the day. These products do not simply sit on your skin; approximately sixty percent of these ingredients get absorbed into your bloodstream." ~ pg. 91
Chapter four is especially informative and essential if you are trying to be healthier and want to find organic alternatives to products filled with synthetic chemicals. Why should you avoid petroleum and talc? Why is there lead in hair dye?
The section on an Eco-Friendly Kitchen is interesting and the chapter on natural and organic foods also gives ideas on how to save time in the kitchen. A few recipes are included:
Vegetarian Pasta Primavera
Fajitas
Risotto with Scallops or Shrimp
Lemon Rice
Grilled Vegetables
An extensive list of resources and a very handy index complete this well-researched and extremely helpful book. If you enjoy Feng Shui or decorating and organizing your home, there is a lot to enjoy and you may find the information in this book can also help with fatigue, anxiety and sleeping problems.

Detox Your Life.......2007-04-04
No matter what your goals are, this book has the starting point for you. Learn how to make your life less toxic and get a better relationship with Mother Earth.
Declutter, paint and detoxify.......2007-04-02
Using the principles of Feng Shui, you can create a harmonious home environment with this book as a guide.
Author Lehmeier-Hartie has you choose colors, elements and design based on your birthday. If you suffer from problems feeling disorganized or headachey at home, it could be your home is not organized properly or the flow of energy is impeded.
The author extends this tranquility to finding the right job and the right mate. Whether or not it is the alignment of elements in the home, focusing on clearing clutter in your life can only have positive effects. A very pretty book.
Life-changing ideas.......2007-02-02
Worried about what your family is being exposed to? Are you hoping to increase your wealth or find love this year? Trying to decide on the best color to paint your walls? If you answered "yes!" to any of these questions, then Harmonious Environment is a must read.
The goal of this book is to create positive energy both in your home and your life and to be kinder to the earth. Hertie is a design consultant, chef, gardener, and healer. She shares her professional and personal experiences with the readers, i.e., homemade earth-friendly cleaning products, tasty recipes for carnivores and vegetarians, etc. She recommends that after reading this book, you apply the process in the following order:
1. Remove toxic products from your home and garage
2. Clean, declutter, clear and organize your home
3. Buy/use environmentally friendly products
4. Learn how to use place objects (furniture, mirrors, etc.) to manifest change in your life
The relationship between people and the Earth is an important part of Harmonious Environments. To remind ourselves of this interconnection, Hertie recommends bringing the natural world into your home. Some ways to do this include displaying rocks and minerals and using houseplants as pollution busters.
Hertie uses Harmonious Adjustments (TM) that combines "the best principles of Feng Shui, the application of the Four Elements based on your birth date, color, Vastu, energy work and good design." I've read a few Feng Shui books in the past, but the author's clear instructions and enthusiasm has given me the confidence to actually try this at home.
I liked how the author reminded me to use this book as a guideline but to also trust my intuition. Do what looks and feels right for you. I also liked how the Resource section listed all the suppliers, organizations and further readings mentioned throughout the book.
Even if you aren't interested in Feng Shui, this book has valuable information about becoming an informed consumer and living a more eco-friendly life.
Armchair Interviews says read Harmonious Environment and get ready to change your life!
Fantastic book with tons of information.......2007-01-18
I got this wonderful book as we are moving our place of business, and wanted to make smart choices. From the first page, Ms. Lehmeier-Hartie shares her expertise in an organized, thoughtful way. The day after I got the book, I negotiated a much more logical and healthier ventilation system, and the section on colors was far and away the most organized and logical explanation I have ever seen.
Some aspects of our project are beyond our control, but I became a much more active participant. We anxiously await our new space, and know that the suggestions made here will add to the beauty and functionality of our space. I wish I could have rated this 10 stars!
Book Description
Transfer starts by acquainting crafters with the tools of the trade, such common household items as an iron and a color printer, and then suggests all sorts of surfaces for decoration -- linens, canvas, ceramics, wooden mats, glass, and cork. Design and application concepts in hand, crafters can choose from the wide variety of heat transfer projects -- personalizing cloth napkins, a canvas bag, sofa cushions, curtains and drapes; customizing dishes, ceramic tiles, wooden placemats, biscuit tins, glass jugs, and vases.
Customer Reviews:
Great instructions for Lazertran papers.......2007-04-15
I like the book and the projects give you a nice jumping off point. The instructions are clear and seem pretty easy to do. However, I was looking for something with more transfer techniques then just the use of lazertran papers. Of the 16 projects in the book only 2 were methods other then lazertran transfers.
I'm not unhappy with the book, but I think if I had looked at it in the bookstore I would have passed it up.
Great Intro To Transfer.......2005-08-26
Makes transferring unintimidating. I don't understand why one reviewer thought this was not a "how-to" book, as directions make it very easy to follow and succeed. Tells you what you need to start, how to set up and how to do it on various surfaces. Book is laid out with list of materials needed, set up and how-to for each surface. Neat ideas to spur your imagination. Very helpful book for those wanting to transfer on fabric, less helpful for those wanting to transfer on ceramic, however, it still has value for teaching the process and leading you down new roads.
Gets to the point with good photos!.......2002-06-28
While I would agree with the other review that called this book a fun ideas book, I appreciate a book that gets down to it right away. I primarily like this book because it's features many projects with Lazertran transfer paper, as well as 6 or so other methods. A great book if you're looking for an introduction to tranfer techniques.
Major Disappointment!.......2002-05-19
This book is not the "how-to" I expected so much as a very pretty but generalized "fun ideas" book. Good tag sale item (for selling),
Book Description
The deceptively simple supermarket choice echoed in the title symbolizes the dilemma of a society on a collision course with the planet's life-support systems. Do we clearcut forests, process pulp, and bleach it with chlorine to make paper bags? Or do we make a pact with demon hydrocarbon, refining ancient sunlight into handy plastics? About half the total volume of America's municipal solid waste is packaging--at least 300 pounds per person each year--and the "upstream" costs in energy and resources used to make packaging are even more alarming.
In this fascinating look at the world of packaging, writer Daniel Imhoff and photographer/designer Roberto Carra give consumers, product designers, and policymakers the information we need to take steps toward a more sustainable future. They delve into the histories and life cycles of packaging materials and look at the countless ways that packaged goods shape our culture. Using case studies, they explore the positive trends that are changing packaging, including producer responsibility and "take-back" laws being enacted in Europe; the eco-design movement; plant-based plastics; labeling to disclose the ecological and social impacts of products; and producing and consuming locally and in bulk versus the wasteful global exchange of single-serving containers. Carra's remarkable color photographs illustrate both the important functions of packaging and its many unintended consequences around the globe.
Despite recent advances, the packaging problem keeps growing, Imhoff warns. Real solutions must incorporate new (or rediscovered) ways of producing, distributing, packaging, consuming, reusing, and reprocessing products and materials. As consumers, there's much we can do, and Paper or Plastic offers a checklist for consumer action, along with resources for information on products, programs, and policy options. It's one book that is truly worth the recycled paper it's printed on.
Customer Reviews:
Book review of Paper or Plastic by Scott Carlson.......2007-06-25
There are environmental causes that stir the emotions--the plight of whales and baby seals, the fate of redwoods, or the metastasis of suburbia. But Daniel Imhoff would point out that the most pervasive and fastest-growing environmental problem is so commonplace it's invisible: packaging. Styrofoam containers from a fast-food meal, the anti-theft blister packaging that encapsulates retail electronics, or the common aluminum can and plastic bottle are all part of a waste stream that composes some 300 pounds of garbage per person per year, headed straight from the shelf to the landfill.
Apparently mindful of the fact you can read only so much about polystyrene peanuts and polyethylene bottles, Imhoff has organized his book into punchy little essays, short case studies, and colorful charts that survey the extent of the packaging problem, along with a range of solutions that some companies are trying.
Imhoff points out that packaging is increasingly the product itself--a method corporations use to market feelings of familiarity, uniformity, or purity. To illustrate, he would have you consider evolution of the egg: It is nature's perfect packaged food source, with its container, the shell, being durable yet entirely biodegradable. For years, eggs came in molded paper pulp. Now the most expensive of them frequently come in molded plastic trays, derived from petroleum products. (Nature's Promise, which markets eco-friendly eggs, requests on its tray that you recycle the plastic packaging, even though few municipalities take such containers.) And lately eggs come as pre-scrambled "pasteurized real egg product," in capped cartons at premium prices--far removed from the simple egg. The packaging will be with us decades, maybe eons, after the egg has been cracked, scrambled, and eaten.
As its title implies, packaging choices for environmentalists are dilemmas, with few simple solutions: Would you rather bag your groceries in the products of clear-cut forests or petroleum? He holds up companies such as Aveda, the Minneapolis-based cosmetics company, as pioneers. Aveda worked to eliminate toxic or less-recyclable plastics from its packaging line, and strove for 100 percent recycled plastics in its containers, risking profit margins in the process. Other companies are experimenting with novel products, such as biodegradable plastics.
But even these are merely "less bad" solutions in a world full of packaging waste. Imhoff concedes that packaging offers a good deal of convenience and that making upright choices involves giving up some of that convenience. He recommends carrying a mug and a reusable water bottle, eating in instead of getting takeout, buying in bulk (which reduces packaging waste), buying from local farmers and farmers' markets, and toting around cloth bags. When the cashier asks the question in the book's title, Imhoff suggests, hand over a cloth bag and say, "Neither."
I would recommend this book........2007-01-11
This book is excellent and a very easy read. It does a great job of breaking down the different products and their impact on the environment. There are great examples of companies that are doing their part to help reduce the negative impact on the environment.
Well-organized and informative.......2006-07-06
If every person in America understood the energy, chemicals, natural resources and money that went into creating packages, it's likely our consumption habits would dramatically change. Imhoff does a great job of detailing the hazards and challenges of packaging, without being preachy - he lets the statistics and facts tell the story. This book informs, amazes, and startles the reader.
Overwhelming statistics that will shock you into action.......2006-04-10
I really liked this book for telling me about things that I haden't thought of before, although I thought myself to be an evironmentally aware person. Some of the statistics are breathtaking. Facts are supported by visuals and an attractive layout. As a general reader with no specific education in the environmental science field, it was a bit dry for me at times, but well worth the read. I made lasting changes in my every day life due to the book, and can't get the statistics about plastic bottles and only small amounts of the actually recyclables making it to a "next life" beyond the garbage dump out of my head. Quite life changing.

Every Media, Every Skill Level.......2000-06-02
This book offers a great variety of options for 3D projects with all the information to get your started, over what ever fear you might have and into the creative fun that can be had! The author starts with essentials, paper mache, styrofoam and brown paper that anyone can use and shows some wonderful projects for beginners. They include excellent masks, wonderful creapy creatures. Some of the urethane foam work is completely unexpected and not such a common starting point for most people. The author includes wire framing, puppets - just an incredible assortment. I purchased this book for myself and love it, but it would have been great to have when I had children around looking for things to do. Truly a book for all ages
Customer Reviews:
surprise.......2004-04-21
the price on the cover is rated 29.95 us dollars!!!!!!!!!1
how come you offer it for 199.95 dollars????????????????
The Best in My Library.......2002-06-02
I have a number of books on paper mache, and have worked with the medium for several years. This book is far and away the best of the bunch in terms of ideas, techniques, and instructions.
The Contemporary Craft of Paper Mache.......2000-05-12
Paper Mache is not just for children anymore! I love this book. The book has easy to follow instructions. The projects are great. This is a must for all paper macher's and want-to-be paper macher's.
Sophisticated, contemporary artistry from paper........1998-05-06
This book is for the sculptor in you. The authors describe all of the materials used in the craft and present the pros and cons of each. Bravo! There is a good deal of information in its chapters, but the writing is so clear, it is quite easy to undersand. The photos of finished objects d'art present the projects literally in their best light. The photos are also accompanied by illustrations in 3-D. It's a beautiful book presenting the indigenous, the contemporary, and the commonplace in forms that the papier mache crafter can do. I found the the "how to" sections to be outstanding.

Book Description
This book is one of the only books ever written that explains the business of buying and investing in car paper, i.e., debt instruments created from auto sales. Car paper, when managed tightly, can be a highly profitable business. This brief, but informative book will provide you a step-by-step guide for getting involved.
Topics covered: The many benefits of car paper, yields, interest, risks, collections, repossessions, bonus section on highly lucrative furniture paper--wow! Also included are helpful forms to guide you.
You can buy cars, appliances, and furniture wholesale and resell them and carry the note for mega yields! Some folks even do this from their own home!
Get this book while you can. Others have sold seminars charging hundreds of dollars. I only have a limited supply of these books remaining. When their gone--They're Gone! Over the years this "mini-course" has been a cult classic among paper investors. Note: some resource phone numbers have changed and the book does NOT reflect change--but product is valuable for content not phone numbers.
Reader is welcome to send SASE for updates.

Old and slight.......2007-04-11
This pamphlet is out of date and of very little use to a potential investor in discounted car notes. This is a very complex business with a need for experience, training, extensive business planning and a good repo and resale process.

Customer Reviews:
Good ideas for reuse, but..........2004-03-11
While the book is full of useful tips and suggestions it doesn't have much in the way of reducing getting all these bags in the first place. Would have been nice to educate people on this aspect too. E.g. encouraging people to use resuable shopping bags.
The Courier-Post of South Jersey says. . ........2000-10-07

Book Description
In 1999, fiber artist Jeanne Williamson decided to expand her creative horizons by making one small quilt a week. She placed no limits on what materials she could useÑin fact, she created her quilts almost exclusively from found objects, incorporating everything from newspaper and cupcake wrappers to fall leaves and funky yarns into her mixed-media art quilts. The goal was simply to create.
Seven years later, Williamson now has 365 varied and intriguing quilts full of personal stories, experiences, and observations. She also discovered that she had succeeded in expanding her creative horizonsÑand her artwork has flourished as a result.
Now, in The Uncommon Quilter, Williamson provides quilters, sewers, paper crafters, and mixed-media mavens with 52 projects for creating unique small quilts. The book is divided by the type of medium or technique used in each projectÑPlastic, Paper, Surface Design, and FiberÑand each contains innovative ideas for using everyday materials and found objects. Projects take anywhere from twenty minutes to a few days to make, ensuring that artists can fit creative time into their busy lives.
With charming anecdotes and clear, step-by-step instructions, The Uncommon Quilter is an inspiring, insightful guide to creating unique small quilts for self-expression, creativity, and personal and artistic growth.
Customer Reviews:
Great resource for ideas.......2007-10-18
This book is a product of a great experiment: how to use quilting and fiber craft to create a multimedia journal of your everyday life. The author created a small quilt a week for seven years, and the book contains many beautiful examples. Rather than just being an artist's retrospective, however, the book shows you how to work in a similar fashion. I doubt that many people will actually follow the step-by-step instructions to recreate the specific quilts shown here, but the book is a gold mine of ideas about how to use fun, "found" objects (e.g., dryer lint, onion bags, plastic sushi grass, shredded paper) in creating quilts and small works of art. My one quibble with the book is that it would have been better with a spiral binding (so it would lie flat and make it easier to consult while you are working). But all in all, it's a brilliant and very user friendly guide showing you how to incorporate elements of your everyday life in your art.
A creative license for quilt makers.......2007-10-17
Very inspiring. The book details the thinking behind and instructions for each of the 52 small quilts in the book.
I found a line in the book that sums it up best:
"whether certain quilts were good or bad is not the point; the point is that I made the time to try new things, that I took risks, and that I learned a lot. It was one of the best things I ever did for myself, both artistically and personally."
The book is a creative license of sorts to think small, experiment, and not worry if a piece is a success or not.
