Customer Reviews:
Not the best book on this subject.......2007-02-24
After reading that perfect book "Common Sense Construction Law" by Smith, Currrie and Hancock LLP, I wanted to learn more about construction claims and bought this book. However I am very disappointed. I can definitely say that this is not the best book on this subject.

Book Description
This text examines a broad range of topics in environmental and natural resource economics. It presents in-depth treatment of important issues at the cutting edge of environmental policy debates. The focus is on equipping readers with the tools necessary to analyze current environmental issues as an economist would.
Customer Reviews:
Highly Recommended for Understanding Environmental Issues.......2004-05-19
How much pollution is too much? What role should government play in regulating the environment? Will "clean technology" lay the foundation for a sustainable future? These are the questions students of environment issues are posed with.
To help readers understand the far-reaching implications of environmental and resource economics, this text examines a broad range of topics in environmental economics. It presents "standard analysis," as well as in-depth treatment of important issues at the cutting edge of environmental policy debates.
The focus is on equipping readers with the tools necessary to analyze current environmental issues as an economist would.
In keeping with the philosophy of incorporating examples directly in the text, this book begins with a detailed case study of a "big issue" with which many students are familiar-global warming.
Other issues covered in a rigorous and comprehensive manner include the property-rights basis of environmental problems, benefit estimation techniques and benefit-cost analysis, incentive-based regulation, and sustainable resource use.
The Second Edition retains the three interrelated advantages of its predecessor-(1) broad content, (2) pedagogical clarity, and (3) timely, well-integrated examples-while incorporating major reorganizations, additions and updates aimed at enhancing learning and reflecting the most up-to-date information available.
Following the Introduction, this text centres around four focussed questions:
Part I: How Much Pollution is Enough? Part II: Is Government Up to the Job? Part III: How Can We Do Better? Part IV: Can We Resolve Global Issues?
Using these questions as guidelines, author Eban S. Goodstein develops the economic tools students need to explore solutions to environmental problems. In the process, the book covers a wealth of current examples, from global warming, to population growth, to urban air pollution and energy policy, to chemical regulation and landfill siting.
Part V covers four advanced topics: The Importance of Being Convex, Imperfect Regulation in an Uncertain World, Input-Output Models and Life-Cycle Analysis and Incentive-Compatible Regulation.
As this text addresses important questions raised in contemporary (and future) society and introduces readers to the economist's view of some solutions, it is highly recommended for students taking courses in environment management, environmental and resource economics, and environmental studies. Ideally, students would have undertaken a course in microeconomics or intermediate microeconomics as a prerequisite.

Letters from Students.......2000-06-01
Date: Thu, 26 Aug 1999 15:55:19 -0500 From: C.N.Gomersall
To: eban@lclark.edu Subject: student evaluations of your text Eban, I'm the fellow who asked you about the double dividend issue last spring, when I was using your text in my class on environmental economics. As we both gear up for next semester, I thought I'd send you the results of my request, during that course last spring, for (anonymous) evaluation of the text on the part of my students. (I survey most of my classes this way, though never with this kind of result; on the contrary, students are often rather cutting.) I'm including every word from every student. (1) I like this book. I think it has good chapter layouts and is great with examples. The examples also make the text more interesting to read. (2) I like the text. I think it is very straightforward and clear. It does a very good job of organizing what is important and what is needed to understand some of the issues. (3) Goodstein's text, in my opinion, is valuable. It moves away from the strict "Friedman approach." It shows different sides of the arguments presented and is fairly detailed. (4) Goodstein's book is excellent, one of the best textbooks I used in college. Its best attribute is the many examples given, they also help in the learning process. (5) Excellent book. Well written and uses great examples. He ties in human with the well descriptive topics. [This sentence was hard to read.]
(6) Goodstein's text has been very well written and easy to use. (7) Goodstein does a good job of writing this text. Sometimes it is a bit dry and the chapters take a long time to read. Overall, though, this is a good text for this class and a good learning tool. (8) I think the Goodstein text does a pretty good job of writing at a level that we can interpret. I also like his summaries of the chapters, and pointing out of important topics in each section. (9) Good book. Interesting to read. (10) Goodstein is good at getting his point across. It seems to me that much in his book is repetitive, though. It is difficult though to talk about this subject without being repetitive. Overall Goodstein does [a] good job, especially with examples. (11) Goodstein as such has been a good selection for the text. He explains a lot of new material in a manner geared towards his primary audience, the students. I think he has done a good job. (12) The Goodstein book is excellent, in my opinion. It seems very unbiased, especially considering the possibilities of either being slanted toward the environment or the other way [sic]. It presents a lot of information without being too technical and overwhelming those of us who haven't had much economics with graphs and other "economic tools." And yes, I liked it too. Customer Reviews:
Business and Its Environment (5th Edition).......2006-07-19
This book is an easy read. It has tons of useful information. I would recommend this book.
New Edition is Better.......2005-12-05
There is a new edition (the fifth) for this book, and it is better than the edition shown here. While avoiding a polemical view, Baron illustrates business ethical priciples with very poignant examples and stories. The case studies are very up to date and fun to read. More than that, though, the case studies can form a basis for classroom debate and discussion which not only brings the material to life but also promotes critical thinking and articulation among students.
I liked it very much, and recommend it highly.
The book for dilettante readers.......2002-01-21
The author provided some good examples demonstrating a picture of business and its environment. People who have exposed to Industrial Organization (or at least some levels of application of game theory) will get bored of all arguments without mentioning anything about its quantitative aspect.
The book for dilettante readers.......2002-01-21
The author provided some good examples to demonstrate some business's environments. The book is very readable. You will get bored if you have exposed to industrial organization or some applications of game theory.
Pretty Easy Reading.......1999-05-30
I've read a good chunk of this book during a B-school elective on non-market strategies, and found it imparted some valuable information. It's not very prescriptive if that's what you're looking for. But it made me feel like I got something out of the class despite an unstellar professor.

The Book for students studying law easy and nice to follow.......2000-01-29
Dear Readers, I am taking an intro class in the subject of law and I am finding that this book is an excellent read for my class and for understanding the basis of law two-fold. Furthermore, I would like to give added and much-deserveded praise to the author for writing what I consider a well-understood text - out of all the previous readers I have had into a fascination of mine - the law, this has far been the best. Thus, I conclude that this is the BOOK for students studying law easy and easy to follow. --:)
Excellent and Precise and so easy to understand........1999-05-27
I am a legal studies student and have taken Business Law I and II (online) using the Cheeseman book. The examples are clearly defined while every important phrase or word is outlined in the book. The cases in the chapters clearly demonstrate what the legal ramifications are and how it is applied. I have taken several law courses and I have found this book extremely helpful. Easy to read and never boring this book I would recommend .

astonishing.......2002-07-31
I go to Harvard law school and I have found this book to be helpful in my field of study. Although i also study criminal justice law I have now become interested in environmental and this book has been impressive. This book is a life saver. It was classy and sophisticated. Please go buy this and I hope to see some new challenging faces at Harvard. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
This is an outstanding book........2001-08-26
I've used this book in two seated classes and one online course on environmental law. If you want a glorified HAZMAT course or have decided that the way our legal system actually operates doesn't matter, then look elsewhere. This is not a science book (nor should it be). If you want a text that students find easy to read and that provides comprehensive coverage of environmental law and our legal system, this is your book.
An Outstanding Book!.......2001-08-25
I've used "Environmental Law" by Nancy K Kubasek and Gary S. Silverman in two seated classes and one online course. It is an outstanding text for describing the parameters of our legal system to students. Those to want a glorified HAZMAT approach to environmental law (or want to ignore the legal system) might not like the book. I love it.
Limited value.......2000-11-02
The author of this books is an attorney who does a fairly good job with the big picture but not very well with the science. If you're only looking for a quick study of the structure of environmental law in the U.S., which is about one-third of this book, it's readable and informative. It also uses language and structure that's accessible for advanced high school and lower division college students in giving and overview of the U.S. legal and regulatory system for the environment. The author creates a good historical context for these discussions. However, the book begins to lose its polish when the author ventures into discussions of the science behind the law. I noted several points where the presentation of the science was clearly poorly informed (ozone and global warming, nuclear and alternative engery). If you're only looking for an general introduction to environmenal law, this book will get you started. But, if you want to get a good idea of the science that drives environmental law, keep looking.
