This did the trick.......2002-05-21
I got a 55 on the exam. However, I received the book 3 days before the test. I crammed and got through it. However, there were lots of questions on the test not covered in the book. The book itself was just a bunch of tests, not tangible study material. In summary, it was a good investment.
Great preparation for the Environment & Humanity Exam!.......2001-07-12
I used this book along with a library book on environmental science to score a 58 on the exam (enough to give me credit with an A!). In many cases, the example questions were much harder than the actual exam qestions. I spent quite a bit of time reviewing the practice questions in this book, and the glossary of environmental terms came in very handy when I would come across a question that I wasn't familiar with. This book can not be your only study resource if you know very little about the topic. However, when used in conjuction with a well-written book on environmental science and current issues, it helps you to find your weakest areas and improve upon them. It also helped me to get a feel for the layout of the exam and gave good basic information about all the DANTES exams offered, including contact information for the Chauncey Group, the organization that oversees the program.
This book does what is is meant to do: give you a glimpse at the exam before you take it, make your weakest areas clear to you and tell you how to find out more. It is NOT like one of the CLEP guides, which includes a small "textbook" as the first half for those who know little or nothing about the subject.
These books by Jack Rudman are the best of the limited resources available to those who wish to take DANTES exams.

A must read for every believer.......2007-08-12
Most working people spend majority of their time at work. Unfortunately, for some the environment can be hostile.
Like most believers, I work in a hostile work environment, and this book gave me insightful points on how to respond to the environment.
Thank Goodness for a book like this!.......2007-02-27
This book has helped me to focus my attention on me instead of the issues at work which are beyond my control. If you're in a job that seems stressful and you need some encouragement, this book is for you. You can choose to be happy at work or you can choose to be miserable. This book clearly let's you see which choice is in your best interest! You can be peaceful at work regardless to your work circumstance if you choose to. This book was worth reading and sharing with other people that I work with.
Great Book.......2007-01-05
This book was very helpful and practical in dealing with uncomfortable work environments in a Christian manner. It gave specific examples of ways to deal with difficult situations, using scriptural principles based on the life of King David.
It's a great book.......2006-03-20
I had a friend who was going thru some very difficult times at work with a few co-workers. I saw the book and purchased it for myself but once I read it I knew that my friend could benefit from reading it so I gave it to her because her situation was more complex than mine. She thanked me for the book because she knew that it would help her to better understand how to survive in a hostile work environment.
Book Description
With its confining cubicles, incompetent leaders, bureaucratic inertia, and corporate doublespeak, the workplace can sometimes seem cartoonishly sinister--right down to the pointy-haired bosses and malevolent canines!
It's time to snap back into flesh-and-blood reality and tune in to ESCAPE FROM CLUELESSNESS. This refreshing book offers an antidote to the creeping cynicism and feelings of helplessness that ensnare millions of employees--each struggling to make sense of the strange and puzzling world of work.
There are no sugarcoated management mantras here. Instead, the book uses a punchy text and biting wit to survey the same grim territory so brilliantly satirized by "Dilbert." But, unlike the cartoon, ESCAPE FROM CLUELESSNESS takes the strong, positive stand that something CAN be done to improve things.
And the book supplies a detailed road map for making it happen, leading readers on a journey away from cluelessness and toward a better, more rewarding work life. Along the way, they'll: * Plunge into the murky underworld of office politics--and learn how to play the game (without getting eaten) * Enter the hothouse of interpersonal relationships--and learn to understand themselves and the people around them * Tour the feudal landscape of corporate monarchs, lords, and serfs--and learn to work around the bureaucratic barriers that hierarchy creates * Crack the hidden cultural codes, create pizzazz in a sterile workplace, navigate the endless--and endlessly bumbled--change efforts, and much more.

A Politically Incorrect Situation.......2000-05-04
This book was written for those who are experiencing serious problems in the workplace. In the Introduction, the authors provide a self-audit consisting of a series of direct questions. For example:
"Have you ever wondered why so many people in high positions seem to be selfish, power-crazed boneheads?"
"Do you detest office politics?"
"Do relationships at work remind you of a dysfunctional family?"
The balance of the book focuses on strategies and tactics to help resolve (or at least alleviate) the problems suggested by the various questions. The book is divided into several different parts which focus on the nature of cluelessness, organizational politics, improving relationships on the job, "mapping the pecking order", "cracking the cultural code", understanding change, and "choosing [an appropriate] life path." The book makes tons of sense. The authors obviously care sincerely about the victims of cluelessless. They offer what they call "both an atlas and a guide" for coping with system dynamics, "the murky world of politics", "the emotional world of people at work", "the red tape of bureaucracy", "the depths of tribal life at work", and sudden/traumatic change. Finally, they examine "a deeper question that's a silent companion at work: What life path do you really want to follow?"
Who should read this book? I highly recommend it to those who feel that they are clueless and/or victims of those who are. The authors offer excellent advice as to what to do (and what not to do), how to do it, and when. I also recommend it highly to anyone in a senior management position who has direct responsibility for developing others to their full potential. Chances are that many (of not most) of those "others" are clueless, not only in the workplace but also to the fact that this book is available.
Huge Disappointment.......2000-05-03
Take just a little bit of useful information, add a little bit more of relevant information, put in a whole lot of useless junk and fluff, and tack on a catchy title: That's what this one is folks. I usually give away books that I end up not wanting to keep. In the case of this book, I wouldn't do that to anyone. I bought this one yesterday and it is destined for the trash barrel today. It's interesting that trash like this even gets published.

A good start in the career selection process.......2005-12-06
Starting a career the day after you graduate from college is one thing. Selecting a career track before you start college is another. This book, The Complete Guide to Environmental Careers in the 21st Century, is a helpful step in crystalizing your thinking.
With the explosive growth of the worldwide web, there are many, many resources available to help in this major selection process. However, this book focuses on the natural resource careers, and is fairly unique in that regard. I read the chapters dealing with my area of expertise (wildlife), and I thought the coverage was adequate, but a bit too generic. Picky, picky. I still found myself agreeing with what I was reading. I also liked the introductory chapters, and appreciated the focus on getting experience through internships and volunteering. I'd like students to do some exploring in their selection of courses, and "cross-train," or become multidisiplinary. Most students change their major at least once in their college careers, and many change their major several times. Be well grounded, and flexible in the courses you take.
Don't forget, however, that experitse is critical for success. It is not the degree that will propel you along your career track. It is what you know, how well you know it, and how you apply this information that will shape your success.
Most importantly, if you DON'T like the careers discussed in this book, switch majors now!
Outdated but still good.......2004-06-17
I suppose this is what you get when you order online. Every once in a while you don't get what you expect and I think it has a lot to do with not having the book right there in your hands before purchase. I just got this book in the mail yesterday and although I haven't got through a lot of it (50 pages or so) I can easily tell it was before Lil' Bush Jr. stepped into office and started rewriting environmental law in favor of big business favor. The book also talks (obviously) about predictions and trends in the field that may or may not still be true. I find myself reading saying "oh thats interesting, i wonder if its still true.
I know much of it has to do with me not noticing the pub. date but when you have a book with 21st century in the title I guess I kind of took it for granted.
A clearly written comprehensive guide that anyone can use.......2000-07-16
This is THE book to buy on careers in the environment. It details almost any profession you can think of, from science to social work. There are clear decsriptions off all the various careers, case studies (ie" a day in the life of John Doe, Botanist")and tons of contact foe everyone from the high school student to a PHD. I bought three books on the subject, and this one coveres all the information that was in the other two, plus it gives hints on how to go about preparing for and engaging in the job search. I am now well on my way to finding a job, and I have a clear sense of direction thanks to this book. BUY THIS BOOK AND READ IT- YOU DON'T NEED ANY OTHERS!
Excellent guide to environmental career paths.......1999-01-29
This book is a superb guide to what is often a confusing jumble of environmental career paths. From forestry to hazardous waste management to environmental education, the authors at the Environmental Careers Organization give detailed information about 11 major fields of work. In each field, they discuss major trends, career niches, salary ranges, appropriate educational background, and mini case studies. Introductory chapters have excellent advice on the job search. The annotated listings of professional assocations and other resources at the end of each chapter are by themselves worth the price of the book. Anyone considering a career in environment should have this book.

Book Description
Leadership Skills for Managers is an in-depth exploration of the abilities and qualities of a leader (as opposed to just a manager). Leadership attributes such as problem-solving, team-building, and communication are analyzed. Tools, techniques, and real-life examples help the reader develop a plan of action for transforming a vision of leadership into an implementable reality.
Customer Reviews:
Leadership Wisdom.......2006-06-25
This is a good introductory book into the principles and practice of leadership. It teaches about the leadership skills that are critical in today's highly dynamic operating environment where change is the only constant. In this case, it is essential to have leaders (rather than managers) who can provide the vision for the organization, show the direction and motivate people towards the realization of the vision.
The author clearly explains the critical attributes of a leader which include team building, good communication skills, decision making ability, and the ability to motivate and coach others for the effective accomplishment of goals.
The book is a good investment for those who in leadership positions, particularly those who are at the beginning of their careers in this field without much experience or previous training. The author gives useful tips which are excellent guide readers. The checklist at the end of each chapter is a useful tool to reinforce what the reader would have studied in the text.
Common Sense Stuff.......2005-10-24
I found this book only provides common sense stuff, not very insightful. There are numerous grammatical errors throughout this book.
Insightful!.......2005-04-04
If this book were an entrée, it would mostly consist of meat and potatoes. Author Marlene Caroselli accompanies her valuable handbook on the basics of leadership with insightful quotations and anecdotes. "Basic" is the operative word here. The book makes no pretense, for example, of delving into the theoretical side of leadership development. Nor does it prepare managers for specific business tasks that they're more likely to encounter as leaders, such as budgeting and strategic planning. Rather, this book is specifically tailored for current managers who have leadership ambitions, and for newly minted leaders who need a little expertise to seize control of their new roles. We recommend it as a solid menu option with lots of good advice for that eager-to-lead audience. The book is thoroughly crafted to achieve its purpose, though more experienced readers may find themselves asking, "Where's the gravy?"
High on the "must read" list.......2001-02-06
Leadership Skills for Managers(published by McGraw-Hill) provides some unusual slants on the topic of leadership. For example, the assertion that "leaders form strategic alliances" was something I hadn't considered before. The Prism of Partnerships showed exactly how to form such alliances. Thank you for some new slants on an old subject.
Real Asset.......2001-02-06
This book is a real asset to any business manager - a must read- easy to follow - great tips for sound management.

"An interesting tool for working with gender differences."
--John Gray
Author of Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus
Men at work do it all the time: They brag, cover up their mistakes, pretend to know what they don't, start fights. And they still get ahead! Why? As psychologist Adrienne Mendell learned when she interviewed one-hundred male executives, the traits that women spend their entire lives erasing from their personalities are actually the qualities that men value in the world of work. And since men are still in the power positions, if you don't play it their way, you don't play at all.
Based on Mendell's interviews and her experience of counseling hundreds of frustrated career women, How Men Think identifies the seven rules that men learned by playing sports as children--games that excluded girls. These rules may seem simple on the surface, but understanding them as men do is anything but easy. You may have fallen into many of these traps yourself:
* You're mad because you want your male boss to let you control your projects. But you've got to take control--that's the only way you'll get it.
* You're steamed because a male colleague consistently takes credit for your work. Do you make a point of touting your accomplishments?
* When you make a mistake you apologize. But the man you apologize to doesn't think you're polite--he thinks you're admitting incompetence.
* A fight with a male colleague leaves you shaken. But the men in your office shout at each other for an hour and then go out for a beer.
These are the times that try women's souls! The strategies, insights, and eye-opening advice in How Men Think will help you get along better with the boys and propel you to the top where you belong.
"The more women have opportunities to play sports the more proficient they will become in competing in this men's world of 'unwritten rules.' To bridge the gap, Mendell's book, How Men Think, is a necessary guide for women working with men."

How Men Think.......2007-01-10
Perfect insight for women in the business world. This book helps level the playing field. A must read for any woman trying to climb the corporate ladder.
True and Helpful Today.......2005-05-27
We could debate about the degree to which Ms. Mendell writes about is relevant today, 10 years after the book's publication. I found everything she said was true. Nothing she wrote was ridiculous or exaggerated. She gives plenty of real examples to make her points, plus the examples of situations and suggested responses are from both Men and Women. My own life experience in the Technology field confirms the reality of what she has to say. I can give examples from my own life that parallel the samples in the book. And I'm still in the 1st half of my work career.
I liked that the suggested behavior changes for Women don't include turning themselves into some weird version of men. Instead Ms. Mendell suggests using humor as much as possible to keep your poise. The point is more to put the person on notice that you are on to their attempts to "put you in your place" and you will act accordingly. To dismiss the book as being "out of date" or "true 20-25 years ago" is to your disadvantage.
Generally useful but slightly out of date.......2003-11-02
Psychologist Mendell does a credible job in emphasizing the differences between how men interact with each other and how women interact. Her basic premise is that men view everything as a game, with set rules, with winners and losers, but do not take things personally. Women, on the other hand, are more interested in relationship building and concerned about other people's feelings rather than the scorecard. Since business is usually run by men, in order to succeed you must play by men's rules. Based on my observations over 25 years, I'd say that her theory was definitely true 20-25 years ago, when men were mostly in charge in the workplace, and the women were mostly secretaries and clerks. Back then, men did not even fill out their own timecards, but had their secretaries do it. Secretaries answered phone calls from the men's wives, and filled out grocery lists for them. The workplace was definitely more military like, with a lot of retired military men up the ranks. Women were definitely outside the norm, and a smart woman engineer was looked on with much suspicion and ridicule. However as technology advanced, voice mail and word processing systems took over the roles of secretaries, and men had to actually learn to type (gasp), and women became more confident and moved up the ranks, the business culture has changed to be more collaborative, emphasizing teamwork, interpersonal relationships, 360 degree assessments, and cross-functional horizontal teaming relationships. Suddenly, relationships mattered, whether between supplier and customer, employee and manager, engineering and marketing. Even the executives want to seem approachable, friendly and caring. So I don't see as much the harrassment of women, putdowns, feminizing, scare tactics and hostility as I did 20 years ago. Are the rules still tilted towards men's style? Yes, but not as much as Mendell suggests. Today, a lot of the collaborative behavior attributed to women is valued in the organization. While it is true that men still hold most of the top positions, and take most of the credit, the types of men that excel are not the old-line militaristic linebacker types, but ones that have figured out how to be diplomatic, concerned, and effective without resorting to caveman techniques.
Become Fluent in "Guy".......2000-11-05
Unless you already are more successful than you ever wanted or dreamed of being, this is a MUST book for any woman, whether rookie or veteran, whose business life involves regular interaction with men. As a woman who believes herself to be relatively fluent in "guy", I found this book to be extremely helpful in confirming many of my hunches about the "appropriate" behavior in particular work situations and explaining other reactions and actions of my male colleagues and opponents that I sometimes found puzzling before. Once you understand the WHY behind what men do, responding to it and mirroring it become much easier which in turn uncomplicates my life. After reading this book and implementing what I learned in the next relevant work decision (which meant acting somewhat different than I would have previously), I was able to finally take control rather quietly over a relationship with a male colleague that had been a source of friction and general unpleasantness for some time and direct it into a more productive path for both of us.
learning to be competive is the key...........2000-05-05
Throughout my life,I have noticed how women hold back when the vibes of competition are in the air, they have been taught to believe they cannot withstand the emotional and physical requirements needed for this expression of assertiveness..take heart,,this book can help you, especially if you have thought you had to be a 'female impersonator" all your life, you don't,use the masculine energy within to achieve goals and don't be afraid that someone may be thinking your too strong,,because you're never too strong.
Women have been taught that they lack assertiveness but this is not true,it has been merely taught and can be untaught.
It does give you room to be yourself, some women as myself, find that the male way of thinking comes naturally and also fierce singlemindedness, others may want to be more feminine in their approach but it depends on the individual.
Some women DO get away with very male behavior such as ranting and raving at an employee, some don't,hard to explain yet I've seen it.Some will be respected for it and some will br called a #itch for some myterious reason..but being strong is definetly worth a try even if you shock some people a bit.Sometimes people HAVE to be shocked in order to change societal sterotypes, sometimes it takes alot of shock for change, there fore,if a woman shows that demominate edge... so be it.

Must Read for Anyone with a Job.......2007-08-16
This book came into my life at just the right moment. As my company thrashes through a period of reinvention, understanding what to do to take best advantage of change has been a key part of helping manage the stress of the situation. I have recommended it to every colleague who will listen and handed my copy to my division President the day after I finished reading it.
The workplace is such a fluid environment, and in the world of mergers, downsizing, reorganization and change, it is important to remember for whom you work. It is for yourself and your family first, your colleagues second, your clients third, and fourth it is for the company at the top of your embossed business card. So you had better have a plan, not just for the day when you return from lunch and there is a HR lackey standing at your desk with a pink slip and a bankers' box, but a plan for the arc of your professional career.
Companies are not people, they are run and managed by people. Understanding your position and power in your company's community is critical to being able to make the right decisions about your job. "I Didn't See It Coming" will help you to sense change before it happens and to prepare to take best advantage as the ground moves and the color of the sky goes from blue to red.
Read this book in times of quite, and re-read it when things are up in the air. I hope that the three high powered women who wrote this book are already at work on the sequel.

Incredibly helpful!.......2002-01-24
I was never one to put much stock in so called "self-help" books, but after picking this one up and flipping through it, I realized that I have much to learn! I couldn't put this book down. I found Miss Tracy's ideas to be powerful tools for reshaping my view of work and my role within it. The examples given are useful. The "focus" questions helped me to determine the sources of my problems at work. I credit this book with helping me to completely reverse my view of a previous job. Instead of continuing to bemoan the events and be angry, I was able to see what went wrong (with the job and myself) and finally make peace. I have no doubt that I will refer to this book again and again. I do recommend "Take This Job and Love It!", but warn any persons who tend to proofread that they will have a fine time noticing the scanner errors!

This book has already changed my life. I saw it on a shelf the other day and after browsing a few pages, found some good stuff. Little did i know that the next day my whole job would be changed around on me, putting me in a total furious crisis. I went back to that book after work at the end of the day, and this morning I now have a lot of new options and creative approaches which may not only save my sanity, but also help me not to back myself into a corner at this typical frustrating kind of job that many have. I'm a very choosy reader, and this book is highly recommended.
