Book Description
Like the first edition, the second edition of the
Encyclopedia of Stress covers nearly every conceivable aspect and ramification of stress including a wide range of related topics such as neuroimmune interactions, cytokines, enzymatic disorders, effects on the cardiovascular system, immunity and inflammation, and physical illnesses. Over the last decade, scientists have presented convincing research showing that psychological stress increases vulnerability to disease. They now understand more clearly that stress may be the thread tying together illnesses that were previously believed to be unrelated. Bone loss, increased abdominal fat, and damaged memory cells in the hippocampus have been linked to elevated cortisol levels.
Building on the success of the first edition, this completely revised work surveys the vast amount of research generated in the past five years, resulting in a substantial revision with over 30% new material and over 100 new entries. Expanded sections include Animal Studies, Anxiety and Depression, Drugs, Depression, Disasters, and Psychological and Other Therapies.
Also available online via ScienceDirect (2007) featuring extensive browsing, searching, and internal cross-referencing between articles in the work, plus dynamic linking to journal articles and abstract databases, making navigation flexible and easy. For more information, pricing options and availability visit www.info.sciencedirect.com.
* Timely update on the topic of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder taking into account events such as terrorism and middle east wars
* Includes expanded coverage on anxiety and depression
* Incorporates entries on the advances in our knowledge of immunology, cytokines and cell mediated immunity involved in stress responses and autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and Type I diabetes

Book Description
From Argentina to Zimbabwe, the industrialized world's encroachment on native lands has brought disastrous environmental harm to indigenous peoples. More than 170 native peoples around the world are facing life-and-death struggles to maintain environments threatened by oil spills, explosions, toxic chemicals, global warming, and other pollutants. This unique resource surveys those indigenous peoples and the environmental hazards that threaten their existence, providing a wealth of information not readily available elsewhere. Arranged geographically, each entry focuses on the peoples of a particular country and the environmental issues they face, from the global warming and toxic chemicals threatening the Arctic Inuits, to the logging that is devastating indigenous habitats in Borneo. General entries overview such topics as climate change, dam sites, and Native American Concepts of Ecology. The 'Guide to Related Topics' and index provide access to recurring themes such as deforestation, hydroelectric power, mining, and land tenure.

A Great Homeschool Science Supplement!.......2007-08-13
"We" use this in our homeschool classroom to coincide with topics being taught in our regular science textbooks. It is great for breaking up the monotony and going to the computer to "see" some visualizations of concepts like photosynthesis, etc.
There are some really neat "links" that liven up the learning.
The book is colorful, well laid out, brief. If you want more detail this book is not for you. But, it's great for introductions to concepts like meiosis, mitosis and diffusion, etc.
Heck, I could have used some of these links when I was taking biology in college! LOL
Wonderful website links! And, it's under $20. WOW!
Not for younger kids.......2006-04-28
I had purchased for my 9 year old (who is a very advanced reader and gifted student) the Usborne World History book. She LOVED that book, and has read it cover to cover several times. I figured that the Usborne Science Encyclopedia would be similarly interesting to her. Wrong. She has barely touched the Science Encyclopedia. The problem with the Science Encyclopedia is that it is very complex and written at a very high level. I wouldn't recommend it for a child less than 14 or 15 and maybe even beyond that.
However, as I have skimmed the book, it seems very good, good illustrations, good content. Just not for younger kids.
Science Encyclopedia a wealth of information at low cost........2006-02-24
My wife and I have enjoyed the Science Encyclopedia very much. The interweaving of the internet web sites make this a great information resource.
A Must for All Homeschoolers!.......2005-10-21
We are classically educating our children at home, and I was a little nervous about teaching chemistry to a 3rd grader. But this book allows you to study your topic in as much depth as you wish. In addition to the helpful websites (some are more helpful than others, admittedly), there are mini experiments and "see for yourself" projects that are fun, safe and educational. Theories are presented as theories, not facts. However, creation or "intelligent design" are not presented at all, which makes this encyclopedia incomplete. Other Christian homeschoolers may have a problem with the "800 million years ago..." jargon, but that's why we homeschool- to weed out the nonsense in our children's education. HOMESCHOOLERS: READ MY OTHER REVIEWS!
The binding is almost gone!.......2005-09-30
I bought this book for my kids 5 years ago, they are now 9 & 11 yrs old. They have used it so much the binding is almost worn off. The best thing about this book is how it lets the kids get as in-depth with a subject as they want. They can just glance over it without being overwhelemed or delve into a subject for weeks without running out of information. Great buy! It is one of 2 books I bought at the time that the kids still use, the other one was Usborne's Internet-linked Encyclopedia of World History.

The World Is Flat [Updated and Expanded]: A Brief History of the Twenty-first Century
ASIN: 1843711389 |
Book Description
In the new millennium, as environmental alarm has escalated, so has interest and concern about the role of religion in nature. Much of the thinking has involved a hope for a 'greening' of religion - i.e. that religion might promote environmentally protective action. Many believe that this 'greening' of religion is a prerequisite for solving the world's social and environmental problems. Curiosity regarding the relationships between human culture, religion and the wider natural world, however, goes beyond such curiosity. The ERN represents an intensive effort to broaden the inquiry and asks the fundamental question: What are the relationships between Homo sapiens, their diverse religions, and the earth's living systems--The answers are difficult and complex, intertwined with and complicated by a host of social, environmental, and religious variables. The goal of the ERN is to explore this question in a way that illuminates these relationships without engaging in wishful thinking, irrational pessimism, or the tendency to oversimplify the dynamic, sometimes rapidly evolving relations between humans, their religions, and the natural world. Encyclopedia of Religion and Nature shows convincingly that religion has a great deal to do with nature, nature a great deal to do with religion, and both have everything to do with the planetary future.

A Fascinating Exploration.......2005-05-19
If you've ever wondered whether religion promotes or hinders environmental concern and action, or whether environments shape religion, or why in recent decades there has been such a fuss about such questions, you'll have difficulty putting down this remarkable encyclopedia. This work is global in scope, both geographically and chronologically, with 1000 entries, covering nearly every imaginable subject. It is a must-have resource for all College and University Libraries, and many environmental studies programs, and departments and scholars that attend to religion, culture, and the environment will want to have a copy of their own. But it written accessibly and would be a valuable resource for community and high school libraries, churches, synagogues, and other religious institutions, as well. But don't take my word for it. The introduction, sample entries, and entry and contributor lists, are provided at www.religionandnature.com, will make it easy to judge for yourself the value of this monumental work.
Book Description
From the first microscope sea creatures to the Tasmanian wolf, this book traces all of extinct life. Each chapter covers the animals themselves, the processes that brought them to extinction, and the modern scientific discoveries that reveal their lost words.
Customer Reviews:
Smarter than the average dinosaur book!.......2003-02-27
My first-grader brought this home from the school library and we both loved it. It's well organized, clearly written, and tells you stuff that's not in every dinosaur book you already own. And the illustrations are spectacular. A real find for fans of dinosaurs and other mysterious creatures.
Exhaustive Research.......1999-07-11
As a writer acquainted with the grueling research that went into the production of this book, I can tell you, Don Lessem has laid out a remarkable overview of prehistoria in DINOSAURS TO DODOS. As a fellow writer and dinosaur enthusiast, I wish him great success with the project. It's a must for any elementary school library.

Even those who strive toward a greener world get stymied by what to do next after composting their veggies and recycling their paper, glass, and tin. But Nikki and David Goldbeck have compiled a reference of more than 2,000 resources on more than 200 topics, providing information on how to reduce, reuse, recycle, repair, restore, reclaim, refill, recharge, and resell everything from air filters to zippers. The book itself is printed on recycled paper with vegetable oil-based ink, the ink-jet cartridges were refilled, the copier cartridges remanufactured, and the computer printer and monitor were borrowed.
Book Description
This revolutionary guide is the first to show the ingenious ways that individuals, businesses and charitable organizations can profit from reuse -- the second environmental "R." More than 200 topics and 2,000 resources, from Air Filters to Zippers. A Book-of-the-Month Club selection. 480 pages, recycled paper/vegetable ink, illustrated, paperback.

This is the Bible of Reuse, 2000 contacts and 200 subjects.......1998-07-19
The amazingly comprehensive encyclopedia "Choose to Reuse" has something for everyone, from a family trying to creatively reuse their household waste to businesses with 1000's of tons of materials to deal with. Every subject has an indepth choice story, lists of green products, non profit experts and organisations with comprehensive contact details. I don't know how they packed so much into a book for so little money. The research must have taken ages. Very amusing in places as well. A real must for anyone interested in the fast growing area of reuse.
