4 out of 5 stars White, middle-class Americans: for a challenge, read this........2007-10-13

Definitely challenging at times, as Sue contends that all whites have some form of embodied racism within (perhaps it is all Americans, although this has been debated in our class -- whether all whites do, whether one needs to be white to be racist, etc.). Definitely a good book to work through one's own culturally-bound views and perceptions that may or may not be conscious.

This is definitely an important concept for any practitioner, and especially any practitioner who is white and does not believe there is racism in the world any longer.

1 out of 5 stars Racist Text.......2007-10-10

I was shocked that educators are allowed to use this text, since it is blatantly RACIST. The logic of the authors for promoting racism and hatred against "whites" appears to be a poor understanding of history, and an unjustifiable excuse, similar to a wild west challenge: you're either with us or you're the enemy. If this is 'multicultural psychology,' no wonder this field has such trouble with credibility.

2 out of 5 stars Could Have Been Better.......2007-08-24

I was disappointed with this text. The authors repeat the same themes numerous times with little original insight. It seems to me that they are more interested in perpetuating stereotypes then providing students with any educating information.

1 out of 5 stars I would give it no stars but...........2007-07-15

This book is the worst textbook I have yet come across in my education as of yet. The authors repeat the same theme many times before they move on. Many of the chapters could have been shorter. I felt as if the authors had in mind to write a book for complete morons!
Besides for the idiotic writing, what's up with all of the racist rhetoric?!? The authors are clearly racist towards the "white folk", as they label white people. Every example of racism or underserved minorities, or anything of the like are overtly blamed on the "white folk". Just leave it out and teach us how to provide services for minorities! The authors make it sound as if every white male in this country is a racist and sexist bigot, who also hates disabled individuals. I can go on and on, but I will stop here.
Then finally, there is the very unprofessional bashing of other scholarly works, such as the Bell Curve, and others. Absolutely childish and uncalled for.
If you can get away without purchasing this textbook, do so! It is a waste of money.

5 out of 5 stars good overview of difficult subject.......2007-04-28

Many of the reviewers have found offense with this book. This, unfortunately, illustrates the difficulty that many people have with discussing issues of race in a way that forces them to examine their own biases and assumptions. The book, "Why Are All The Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?" : A Psychologist Explains the Development of Racial Identity" by Beverly Tatum, also gives a great introduction to the major difficulties that some people have in identifying the role of power and privilege in their lives, and how we are taught in this country to be hypersensitive of exploring issues of race and privilege to the point that many people avoid the subject altogether, assume a 'colorblind' ideology, or take it as a personal attack. It is important to keep in mind that these assumptions and biases (and we ALL have them, myself included!) are largely unconscious, have been demonstrated through LOTS and LOTS of social psychological research to be present, even though we don't mean them to be; and are no one's 'fault' but are a product both of our brain's tendency to use cognitive 'short-cuts' to classify people, and of our society and the existing power inequalities. As a researcher and educator in the field, I found this book to be helpful in that it touches up many of the issues and difficulties that both practitioners and researchers face in doing cross-cultural work, and it does so in a way that is reflective of the state of the science in the psychological reserach.

5 out of 5 stars Christianity for the rest of us.......2007-08-18

What a blessing to read a book that reveals a Christian faith based on Jesus' example of infinite love. In this day of many loud and forthright fundamentalist proclamations about who is going to be damned, who is not "right with the Lord", and who is just not as good as they should be, it is wonderful to read a clear and humble doctrine of love. None of us are as good as we should be, but the Reverend Schori seems to tell us some ways to try.

4 out of 5 stars Hopefilled wings and prayers.......2007-05-29

The sermon/ meditations are moving and inspiring. They give great hope not only for the Episcopal Church but also for Christians and other people of faith. It would have been helpful to have scripture references with the chapter titles.

5 out of 5 stars A Wing and a Prayer: A Message of Faith and Hope.......2007-04-09

The author is authentic and inspiring with real life spiritual experiences. I can certainly see why she became a Bishop! Her "feel" for the downtrodden transforms her readers into not only people of faith, but people of action. Her communication skills help differing views to come together as the Lord would have us do. I liked the book a lot!

5 out of 5 stars True leadership for Episcopalians and other believers.......2007-04-07

Katherine Jefferts Schori has collected in this small volume an assortment of meditations, homilies, and thoughts challenging one to find ways be a Christian in today's world. Building on a person's Baptismal vows and our Lord's call to ministry, both lay and ordained, our Presiding Bishop reveals her deep faith and belief that the church is on the brink of many exciting new works, serving the world. Throughout the book is her belief in the total ministry of the whole church. Laced with illustrations from her personal experieces as an oceanographer, lay leader, priest, and bishop. she calls all Christians to roll up their sleeves and get involved serving the poor, needy, forgotten, and destitute. It is inspiring to find such down-to-earth love for the church and its Lord in a Presiding Bishop. I was reminded often of the passion and strength of John Hines while reading her call to faith and action. This little book deserves wide-spread study throughout the church by lay and clergy alike. It served me well as a Lenten book of meditation. My only suggestion would be to incorporate more Biblical chapter and verse where they are often missing.

In recent years, a revived and burgeoning interest in wholesome, locally baked bread has swept the country, with bakeries springing up in small towns and major urban areas alike, producing an astounding variety of interesting, crusty, tasty, handmade breads. The Bread Builders explains the grains and flours, leavens and doughs, the chemistry of bread, and the physics of baking in a big book filled with helpful drawings, photographs, recipes, and tips. In a unique angle for a book on baking bread, it also includes detailed diagrams and instructions for building your own masonry bread oven from scratch.

As Laurel Robertson, author of The New Laurel's Kitchen says, "This book is ice cream for a baker! We visit legendary bakeries, meet wonderful people, learn all sorts of fascinating scientific information with practical usefulness in bowl and oven, and best of all, get the skinny on masonry ovens, the cherished fantasy of us all." The enthusiasm of the authors in their search for the perfect loaf of bread permeates this detailed but lively and accessible book, and will offer much of use to both amateur and professional bread makers. --Mark A. Hetts

Book Description

Creating the perfect loaf of bread--a challenge that has captivated bakers for centuries--is now the rage in the hippees places, from Waitsfield, Vermont, to Point Reyes Station, California. Like the new generation of beer drinkers who consciously seek out distinctive craft-brewed beers, many people find that their palates have been reawakened and re-educated by the taste of locally baked, whole-grain breads. Today's village bakers are finding an important new role--linking tradition with a sophisticated new understanding of natural levens, baking science and oven construction.
Daniel Wing, a lover of all things artisinal, had long enjoyed baking his own sourdough bread. His quest for the perfect loaf began with serious study of the history and chemistry of bread baking, and eventually led to an apprenticeship with Alan Scott, the most influential builder of masonry ovens in America.
Alan and Daniel have teamed up to write this thoughtful, entertaining, and authoritative book that shows you how to bake superb healthful bread and build your own masonry oven. The authors profile more than a dozen small-scale bakers around the U.S. whose practices embody the holistic principles of community-oriented baking based on whole grains and natural leavens.
The Bread Builders will appeal to a broad range of readers, including:
  • Connoisseurs of good bread and good food.

  • Home bakers interested in taking their bread and pizza to the next level of excellence.

  • Passionate bakers who fantasize about making a living by starting their own small bakery.

  • Do-it-yourselfers looking for the next small construction project.

  • Small-scale commercial bakers seeking inspiration, the most up-to-date knowledge about the entire bread-baking process, and a marketing edge.

    5 out of 5 stars Bread minutia.......2007-07-20

I was looking for a book that would help me understand how to build a masonry oven. This book provides that along with much much more. The detail in the book regarding bread making is excellent and I am certain I will read this book many times as my experience grows. I consider it an excellent book for anyone interested in breadmaking.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh Bread and the oven to bake them in.......2007-02-13

This is a fantastic book for anyone who really enjoys fresh bread. I wore out a bread machine and learned to knead all my favorites by hand. This not only explains every part and ingredient's role in making bread, it also has all the description and scientific explanation to build an outdoor bread oven. We're planning on building an outdoor kitchen and the bread oven in this book will be a part of it.

I purchased 5 of these books one for me and four for friends. I was phoned and thanked for such an "interesting and illuminating gift". This book is honest, sensible, healthy and really useful. I am so glad I was advised to get it from a sourdough baker in Australia!! Yes it is better than Good.

5 out of 5 stars Art and science of artisanal baking.......2007-01-09

The only thing I would add to all these other laudatory reviews is this:

Be careful before you order this book. There is a good chance you will be overtaken with equipment lust and just HAVE to have a masonry oven in your backyard!!!

Seriously, it's a great book. If you're at all curious about old-fashioned leavened bread as opposed to the baloony-yeasty variety, check this out.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book on Everything About Baking Bread.......2006-11-05

This books is excellent...gives detail, explicit descriptions about the entire science and process of bread building!! I have read this book over and over and each time I learn more than I did before. It is an easy to read book, there is just so much detail on everything. The recipe testers for "Cooks Illustrated" (a fabulous magazine for very serious cooks) used this book to help refine their bread recipes!! A must have for bakers!!! Also a good book for recipes is "The Laurel's Kitchen Bread Book."

Since receiving this book, I have read, studied, and put to use the reasonings contained within it's covers. (I have to say, some of the readings that I have gotten are totally mind boggling.) The charts, descriptions, and explanations are fascinating and uncannily accurate. I have only begun to appreciate this ages old method of divination. This book is written so anyone can understand the mechanics and the possibilities of I Ching. It is an intense writing that lends itself well to any reader's ability.

I don't believe that all of these people giving such rave reviews of this book have really used it for long. I also would tend to rate it very highly, except that there is a glaring typo, like the entire description, of hexagram #15. I used to have a copy of this book, and used it, and for the most part loved it, but I find it difficult to believe that an author of any integrity would not have done a revision by now, and corrected the error. If that was done, I would happily buy and use another copy of this book

When I was 19 I was introduced to the I ching. It came in the form of this workbook and almost 10 years later I now still use it as my primary tool and reference.I have since become a follower of Lao Tzu and his teachings. Having read countless interpretations of the actual book of changes when it comes down to actually using the oracle this is the best one.I've also tried 6 other "oracle" books but none come close to this.If u never thought of doing anything close to the I ching then this book is suitable. If you haven't already used this book as a Lao Tzu reader then whereve u been?

    Book Description

In his first novel since Corelli’s Mandolin, Louis de Bernières creates a world, populates it with characters as real as our best friends, and launches it into the maelstrom of twentieth-century history. The setting is a small village in southwestern Anatolia in the waning years of the Ottoman Empire. Everyone there speaks Turkish, though they write it in Greek letters. It’s a place that has room for a professional blasphemer; where a brokenhearted aga finds solace in the arms of a Circassian courtesan who isn’t Circassian at all; where a beautiful Christian girl named Philothei is engaged to a Muslim boy named Ibrahim. But all of this will change when Turkey enters the modern world. Epic in sweep, intoxicating in its sensual detail, Birds Without Wings is an enchantment.

An excellent book, but hard to stay with at times. I would recommend reading it though.

5 out of 5 stars A new Top ten Author For Me.......2007-09-07

From page one the reader feels an Arabian Nights sort of storytelling is coming on, and is not disappointed. I picked this book up on a lark after reading the first few pages and being dazzled by the author's style; this is the first book I've read by him. There are tinges of magical realism and heapings of superstitions from Muslim and Christian tradition. This is a great story of people, their frailties, and their strengths.

I've seen some readers call this book anti-this group or pro-that group and it seems to me they just don't get it. This book is an extensive parable using a handful of real life personalities and some amazing embellishments. A parable of.... well, people can live together hether in a great city or a small town with a mixture of beliefs or national origins as long as they have respect for one another. Life may not be perfect, but it will be managable. Make no mistake; this is no simple-minded utopian novel. The book stresses that, no matter how stressed cross cultural ties may be, these ties are severed forever by the Three horned Beast of Nationalism, Fundamentalism, and Greed.

But I digress. I never read a story for its meaning. I look for talent of prose and inventive storytelling: It has not been since i first read Italo Calvino that i was so impressed. That's really all I have to say. An amazing, highly crafted prize.

    5 out of 5 stars A Book That Lingers.......2007-08-22

This is certainly one of the saddest books I've ever read. I mean sad in that it depicts all the barbarity, kindness, love, hate, absurdity and compassion of which humans are capable and leaves one with the still, sad music of humanity tolling in one's ears. It is a haunting read, if one perseveres to the end.

I add this conditional because I can easily see why a reader may want to give up, say, two hundred or so pages into it. Though De Bernieres is a masterful narrator, particularly at descriptive passages of everything from rolling landscapes to the details of almost unimaginable brutality, the writing itself is not particularly poetic or stylistic. And when one finishes reading a very detailed introduction and description of the manners and affect of a (supposedly) Circassian odalisque, it might not seem worth the effort

But please go on: Because, immediately after these languorous passages comes the most riveting writing of the book in the form of Karatavuk's accounts of Gallipoli. That this is the most captivating part of the book is hardly surprising. The Dedication mentions De Bernieres' maternal grandfather who was wounded at Gallipoli while serving with the Royal Naval Division (a detachment of Navy foot-soldiers created by Churchill because, at the time, there were simply more sailors than ships which they could man). I don't quite how to describe these passages except by saying that you won't be able to put the book down when reading them, and that they contain everything a soldier won't talk about when he comes home from a war.

The rest of the novel, to put it pointedly, becomes increasingly more dismal. If there is a music to this novel, it is akin to the long howl of a wolf in a desolate place. Loved ones become sundered, minds become deranged, peoples dislocated. Some find their quietus suddenly. Others linger sorrowfully.

I can't quite make out the historical accuracy fuss. De Bernieres repeatedly declaims the evils of nationalism from first to last here, and there is enough brutality and bloodshed for all. Those quibbling in the other reviews about this sort of thing remind one of some of the more petty characters described herein.

In the end, one is left with "that weariness of someone who knows that they have lived too long, and which can come upon a person at any age." For, "The present is confounded by the future, the future is confounded by the future beyond it, and the memories bubble up in disorder, and the heart is unpredictable."

5 out of 5 stars Birds without Wings.......2007-08-09

Beautiful writing style and wonderful story. Set in the early 1900's in Turkey, De Bernieres describes the Fall of the Ottoman Empire. He has a wonderful way of making the characters come alive--you almost feel like you are there. Very descriptive.

5 out of 5 stars Book of folly and sorrows . . ........2007-08-08

This book should come with a warning. It will sadden you beyond measure. Set in a coastal village at the end of the Ottoman empire in what is now Turkey, it follows the fortunes and misfortunes of a large cast of characters. As Christians and Muslims, they have lived together peaceably for generations, and would continue to have done so without the virulent rise of nationalism in the "great world" around them. So the author argues, as the entire village is swept up in the wars and civil wars erupting at the start of the last century, and the lawlessness and ethnic cleansing that accompanied them.

At 550+ pages, it is a long novel, its many stories told in a variety of voices and at a leisurely pace. Richly detailed, it also fills a broad canvas as the specifics of village life alternate with accounts of political movements abroad, following in particular the career and ambitions of the man who became Atatürk, first leader of modern-day Turkey. Readers may contest de Bernière's accounts of historical events - for example, the Armenian genocide - but his overall argument remains consistent, that nationalism has been a scourge that brought misery and suffering to millions and continues to do so. While life for his Ottoman villagers is not without its cruelties and injustices, it was edenic by comparison with the horrors that befall them as the nation-state of Turkey is born - including the agonies of trench warfare, forced marches of whole populations, and unspeakable brutalities suffered by noncombatants caught in the firestorm of military conquest.

Finally, by the end of the novel, the reader is left with an almost unutterable sense of sadness, loss and waste. Its saving grace is surely de Bernière's rapturous use of language, a gift for storytelling, and an attitude toward his characters that envelops them with both a loving and ironic embrace. He gives them what the "great world" has been unable to - a respectful concern for their welfare and a wish that they be remembered and not utterly forgotten. Readers may also find Orhan Pamuk's novel "Snow" illuminating.

    Book Description

In the early 1940's, Wolfgang Langewiesche wrote a series of articles in Air Facts analyzing the various aspects of piloting techniques. Based on these articles, Langewiesche's classic work on the art of flying was published in 1944. This book explains precisely what pilots do when they fly, just how they do it, and why. These basics are largely unchanging. The book applies to large airplanes and small, old airplanes and new, and is of interest not only to the learner but also to the accomplished pilot and instructor. Today, several excellent manuals offer the pilot accurate and valuable technical information. But Stick and Rudder remains the leading think-book on the art of flying.

    4 out of 5 stars Stick and Rudder - what we've forgotten.......2007-07-19

Well, I got my Private Pilots license a couple of months ago and want to improve my Stick and Rudder skills so I bought... "Stick and Rudder". It's interesting to me how much has not changed in all the years since this book was written, but also there were a couple of sections near the end of the book that covered material in a simpler fashion than Rod Machado's book, which I used during my primary training and really enjoyed. I think this book is worth buying if you are training or just interested in blowing out the cobwebs.

5 out of 5 stars !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!A must read for any pilot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-27

It is utterly amazing that Wolfgang Langewieshe could understand the behavior of aircraft so well after they had been flying for only 41 years. You've learned what you need to know for the written exam and maybe even your checkride. Now its time for "flying 102". Read this and you will understand flying better than many 40-500 hour pilots(An unfortunate fact given accident statistics in this experience range). After reading this, you will understand how seemingly competent pilots can easily get into trouble for a lack of "true" understanding. At least, it will make you a better pilot.....At best, it may save your life....

5 out of 5 stars If you fly, buy........2007-04-19

I can't add much to the superlatives written before, so I'll just say this:

Absolutely the best "book money" I have ever spent...on any topic.

5 out of 5 stars There's a Reason This Book Is Still Popular.......2007-03-24

This book has been around longer than most of the population of the planet. There's a reason: it explains flying without all the technical mumbo-jumbo that engineers like to use. Especially if you want to learn to fly a taildragger, but no matter what you want to fly, just buy this book. You'll read a unique yet very valuable explanation of what makes planes fly, and how pilots should fly them.

5 out of 5 stars Angle of Attack.......2007-03-22

Def a must read for the student pilot. Especially if your part 61, but the book takes you through part by part what the private pilot manual throws at you in a few paragraphs. Sure you can pass the written with the private manual, but this book really helps explained what I was doing in the air. The book is old though and the language is a little dated.

Lois Ehlert, beloved illustrator of Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and many other bold, beautiful picture books has outdone herself with this gorgeous (seriously breathtaking) celebration of butterfly metamorphosis. "Out in the fields, eggs are hidden from view, / clinging to leaves with butterfly glue. / Soon caterpillars hatch. They creep and chew. / Each one knows what it must do." As the gentle rhyme unfolds, we turn the small, partial pages that form the larger spread of fabulous foliage in this lush, oversized book. Before our eyes, the eggs turn to caterpillars, the caterpillars to cases, the cases to lovely butterflies. "They pump their wings, get ready to fly, then hungry butterflies head for the sky." The colors become increasingly dazzling, each butterfly springing to life with Ehlert's color-soaked cut-paper magic. Several pages of background material conclude the book, labeling different kinds of butterflies at different stages of development, from the buckeye butterfly to the painted lady to the monarch. A "Butterfly Information" page clearly labels butterfly anatomy and answers basic question about these fascinating fluttery insects, a "Flower Identification" page showcases butterfly-attracting flowers such as the purple coneflower (echinacea), phlox, and lantana, and the last page offers a few pointers on growing a butterfly garden. (Ages 3 to 6) --Karin Snelson

    Book Description

Every spring, butterflies emerge and dazzle the world with their vibrant beauty. But where do butterflies come from? How are they born? What do they eat--and how?
With a simple, rhyming text and glorious color-drenched collage, Lois Ehlert provides clear answers to these and other questions as she follows the life cycle of four common butterflies, from their beginnings as tiny hidden eggs and hungry caterpillars to their transformation into full-grown butterflies. Complete with butterfly and flower facts and identification tips, as well as a guide to planting a butterfly garden, this butterfly book is like no other.

Lois Ehlert takes you on a colorful, intriguing story about the life cycle of a butterfly. Excellent for art students at any level! Text is simple enough for preschoolers and can be enjoyed through the elementary grades. Enjoy this exciting trip through nature and its wonders!

5 out of 5 stars But Where do Caterpillars Come From?.......2006-09-12

This is a beautiful and very clever book. Pages are cocooned within larger pages, with individual illustrations blending seamlessly into the background illustrations. Like the natural world itself, this book rewards the patient observer, with rich details on the surface and others folded in more subtly. Your kids will be focused in on a little book within the big book, as the caterpillar goes on its journey. It makes the launch to the story within the bigger background pages all the more dynamic, striking as the shift from Kansas to Oz.

It starts with the eggs "hidden from view,/ clinging to leaves with butterfly glue." As we turn the pages of a little book enshrouded in the bigger book, we see the caterpillars hatch, "each one knows what it must do," and we follow the path to metamorphosis. Ultimately, the reader will be rewarded with multiple beautiful butterflies launching up towards the sky, a nice Lepidopterian metaphor for the developmental adventures in store for our little ones. It's a good job of story-telling when we know exactly where the story is going but still find ourselves awestruck.

Finally, as if Ms. Ehlert hadn't done enough, we get several pages at the end on butterfly identification, with information on colors, wingspans shown in actual size, the corresponding caterpillars that precede the butterflies, and the like. We get flower information, and then tips on growing your own butterfly garden. Nice stuff.

Get this book, drill it for a few night-night times, and then take your toddlers to a butterfly pavilion to see the real deal. Good times.

    5 out of 5 stars Color,color,color!.......2006-03-20

As usual, Lois Ehlert stimulates and educates the young reader about the mysteries of caterpillars to butterflies. Not only are the colors absolutely stunning, she provides factual information about different species. This book was a fabulous preparation for my classroom of small children as they watched their own caterpillars prepare for their magical transformation!

    5 out of 5 stars A Life's Journey.......2005-07-27

Waiting for Wings is a picture book showing the life cycle of a butterfly. The story uses tantalizing pictures and simple words to explain how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. The book takes the reader through the stages of the caterpillar's life. Once the caterpillar has become a butterfly the story changes to how a butterfly lives its life. The illustrations pull the reader into this book. The print is large and easy to read for young reader. The text also rhymes for two pages at a time. As the caterpillar grows the pages become larger, until the butterfly hatches. As the butterfly begins its flight the pages are full size. The illustrations and page sizes are wonderful for young readers. This book also contains identification pages on butterflies and the flowers they eat.

5 out of 5 stars Toddlers and Babies, too!.......2004-05-24

I have a three year old daughter who must be read to before sleeping. I also have a three month old baby girl who is often in the bed with us while we read. Often, the baby is restless and cries before we finish our books. Waiting for Wings is a fabulous solution. I find this interesting AND educational for my toddler. In addition, the colors are bright and contrasting, allowing my baby to be entertained while the book is read.

    5 out of 5 stars Terrific Book.......2006-07-24

This text is great and the CD-ROM which lets u take and review practice tests may even better. I was surprised at the effectiveness of the text. All the material was presented in sufficient detail to answer your questions, but no not so detailed as to be burdensome as a college degree. The end result for me was a perfect score on all four sections of the test, but I took a LOT of practice tests. YOU NEED THIS BOOK & CD!

3 out of 5 stars Get Your Captain's License, Third Edition.......2005-10-09

This new 3rd edition is better than the fist two. It is not a complete guide to all you need to learn to test for a USCG License, but it is a good base. There are still a few corrections needed in the rules that should have been updated for this 3rd edition and not all the study text agrees with the USCG questions. The CD tests is okay for review and gives a good feel of what needs to be studiedfor the USCG exams. Over all makes a great referance and should help anyone looking for a lower level license.

5 out of 5 stars Get Your Captain's License Ed. 3.......2004-10-15

I received this volume in the mail about two weeks ago and have been hard at work using it to prepare for my exam. While not yet licensed, I have boated and sailed much of my life and am familiar with most of the material in it already.

The new edition is quite thorough. It not only presents all the questions, but has substantial guides preceding each section to help you understand the principles, which I find to be the most helpful feature of all. The volume's only weakness is it is written in a very dry, technical manner making it somewhat laborious to read. Also, if you are not already familiar with some of the concepts, you need to read more basic, outside resources to prepare you to study them in this book, otherwise it will leave you behind. However, if you are not familiar with the material in this text, you probably should not be applying for licensure yet either.

Finally, the new version of the software is very good. It still does not offer to test on the navigation problems. The author correctly states it cannot do this because one cannot plot with compass and parallel ruler from charts on a computer screen. However, I wish the software offered the tests anyway so that I could at least put my answers down and have it confirm them. It would just be more convenient for practicing.

1 out of 5 stars Don't be tempted by the included CD.......2003-04-07

The software not only is simplistic, but also is unstable.

    4 out of 5 stars A Good Start.......2003-01-08

No single text is going to allow you to ace the test, but this should be one of the ones you use. This is the second edition and supposedly updated as of 2000. While much of the information is available on the Coast Guard web site, Wing does a good job of "packaging it" to make it much more readable. I found the light and signal summaries worth the price of the book. Without these two summaries, memorization of the many, many lights and signals would be much harder. Another plus is a "plain english" version as well as the original rules - much more readable and easier to learn.

    5 out of 5 stars Perfection (With a Twist!).......2007-10-02

This will be a favorite storybook for younger children preparing for the first day at school! All over the town, there are children tossing and turning in their beds, worried about teachers, friends, leaving play and family behind, "while visions of school supplies danced in their heads."

Of course, all is well! The teacher is the best and it's the parents in the end who shed a tear or two as they leave their kindergarten scholars behind!

Kids will enjoy hearing this story over and over again! A really sweet read for parents and children!

5 out of 5 stars The Night Before Kindergarten.......2007-09-13

This was a GREAT book for children starting Kindergarten. My daughter was wondering why all the parents were crying at the end of the book. I guess you just have to be a parent to understand! :0)

2 out of 5 stars Portrays Kindergarten as a scary place.......2007-09-04

I do not recommend because it essentially presupposes that kindergarten is a scary place and that you only need to overcome your fears when entering this frightening place. That's how it seemed to me, at least.

Instead of describing kindergarten as a fun, happy, loving place, it talks about how children are at first afraid, but then learn to like it. Why even suggest that your child should be afraid?

Worse, in the book, all the parents stay in the classroom, outside the door watching. That's not how school works. The parents are not there, so why suggest that they are going to be at the door looking in during the day?

Not recommended. The other "night before" books I like, just not this one.

This was supposed to be a gift for a friend's birthday party which became a second gift and of course one for my very own little girl who will be entering kindergarten now in a matter of days!
