Don't let this be the first book for a new mom!.......2007-09-27
When my son was born with DS, all I wanted to hear was that this was a good thing. This book was factual, yes, but it was somewhat depressing for a new mom. Reading the comments from parents was especially discouraging for my husband and me. I was searching for that joy and privilege that I had understood parents of DS kids to have... but couldn't find it. Eventually, I saw other books, calendars, videos, and talked to the self-proclaimed "lucky" parents whom I had sensed were out there. I just wish I had done things in the opposite order.
Informative.......2006-11-17
Absolutely amazing -- full of clear, well-outlined and detailed information, much of which I had previously not known or failed to appreciate its significance and relevance. Even a professional could benefit.
No other book like it on the market!.......2006-03-15
I wish someone could have given me this book when my daughter was born in June 2005. I had a hard time finding information that deals with specific issues relating to Babies with Down Syndrome.
Babies with DownSyndrome.......2005-09-12
I had recently found out that my future grandchild was diagnosed with Down Syndrome and was anzious to start educating myself. The book helped me understand the syndrome and realize that we need not be afraid of what the future holds. Since then I have found out that this baby will probably not go full term, but what I read made me realize that I should not be afraid of hearing Down Syndrome in the future.
Please don't buy this book first.......2005-09-12
I was given a copy of this book when my son, Zachary was born. As another reviewer mentioned, it was quite scary reading all the things that MIGHT be wrong with him medically, along with the quotes from parents the author included. I'm sure the quotes were a well-meaning inclusion from the author - but each and every one I would review to be extremely non-descript, even bordering negative. As a parent of a child with DS - I can tell you first-hand that my experience has been nothing but non-descript...but overwhelmingly positive. My son, at less than 2 years old, has already brought so much joy into our lives and countless others. A child with Down Syndrome is a blessing in disguise. He give to me so much more than I give to him as you wil hear from just about ANY parent with a DS child - but not from the author or the outdated quotes she chooses to include in her book.
Book Description
At Home with Art is about art lovers, their passion for art, and their seemingly unquenchable desire to bring home the works that have captured their hearts. Whether the artworks are Picassos or posters, these people want to acquire and live with the art they love. "I wake up in the morning and exercise where I can look at it," says John Robson about one of the paintings in his San Francisco townhouse. How these art lovers integrate their finds
into their living spaces, juxtaposing their paintings and sculpture with the artifacts of everyday life -- furniture, rugs, books, lamps, objets d'art -- is vividly illustrated here in more than fifty homes inhabited by people for whom living with art is as essential as breathing.
These homes are not mini-museums with art to be admired from a respectful distance. Nor have they been designed by interior decorators whose goal is to harmonize the upholstery with the pictures. Each home has been chosen for its very personal and inspired expression of art and decor, revealing a deep, even spiritual, relationship between the pictures on the walls and the people who place them there. From airy lofts and old farmhouses to sleek city apartments and cozy traditional houses, all are made special by the paintings and sculptures within.
A wide variety of people appear in these pages, from the president of MoMA to a young man in love with poster art, to the writer who has artist friends, to the young woman who inherited pieces from her mother, to the actress whose art travels with her wherever she goes. The kinds of art that speak to them and that they are impelled to acquire range from old masters to outsider art, from folk art to contemporary art, to prints, drawings, photographs, and sculpture. We learn about what sparked their interest in a particular genre, how they make their selections, how they meld them into their homes, and what living with their art means to them.
Though looking at these interiors proves there are no fixed rules about displaying a work of art, special sections on framing, hanging, lighting, and caring for art, from oil paintings to delicate works on paper, provide technical assistance. A directory includes framers, dealers, auction houses, and restorers in major American cities and in London.
Above all,
At Home with Art shows that there are all kinds of art to be loved and cherished, however grand or simple, and that living surrounded by art's beauty can bring boundless personal satisfaction.

An invitation into the homes of collectors........2000-12-31
This book is inspiring because it shows us the homes of many collectors of paintings. It is well written, but there are not enough new ideas that can be incorporated by the reader. Some of the collectors have little idea on how to display their paintings in a way that is pleasing and justifies the works. Many of the dispalys are cluttered and claustrophobic. Yet, there are some splendid homes that incorporate paintings spectacularly. The article on Dorothy and Herbert Vogel is very moving. These extra-ordinary people deserve a book just on them.
A unique and personal view of collecting.......2000-01-12
This is an extraordinary book. Clearly not intended as a scholarly exercise, the authors take us up close and personal with outstanding collectors and their art. These are people I would be unlikely ever to meet, and their personal views and how they are expressed through the works they surround themselves with provide a glimpse into the collecting mind. Many of the homes are wealthy, though some are artists who have accumulated works from their friends. The photos are spectacular, and give many ideas of how art can be integrated into one's home.
At Home With Art Not Your Home.......2000-01-06
Diving into this book, as an avid art collector, one might expect to learn how different people work with the art they possess. This book though is really for those who are stricly ardent and almost excessive collectors who like to jam pack their residences with works galore. What is missing from this text is a careful presentation of how many different types of people display their art. There is too much focus on furniture, collecting passions and interest, and not enough focus on ideas. Overall, I found this book to be somewhat mono-dimensional in the concepts portrayed of how others live with their art. More a picture of what the authors had preconceived than a search for the spectrum of ideas.
Book Description
Bestselling author and literacy expert Mem Fox reveals the incredible emotional and intellectual impact reading aloud to children has on their ability to learn to read.
All parents want and expect their children to learn to read, but few realize they can get their kids on the road to reading long before they start school simply by reading aloud to them every day. With passion and humor, acclaimed author and internationally respected literacy expert Mem Fox tells readers how she herself became aware of the astonishing effects that reading aloud and bonding through books have on very young children.
She speaks of when, where, and why to read aloud and demonstrates how to read aloud to best effect and how to get the most out of a read-aloud session. She walks readers through the three secrets of reading which together make reading possible. She gives guidance on defining, choosing, and finding good books and closes with tips on dealing effectively with the challenges that sometimes arise when children are learning to read.
Filled with practical advice, activities, and inspiring true read-aloud miracles, this book is a must for every parent-and for anyone interested in how children learn to read.
Customer Reviews:
A very irritating book.......2007-02-04
I read aloud to my kids all the time. I probably spend 30-60 mins a day on average doing so. I agree that reading aloud to kids is very important. I still cannot recommend this book to anyone. I find it difficult to accept the opinions of someone who bases most of her theory on having taught her ONE child to read. Yes, that's correct, she only had one child and this child learnt to read almost by osmosis. She must have been very lucky and had an awful lot of time on her hands. If you want to read a whole book on how reading enormous amounts to children will seemingly teach them to read without phonics then this is the book for you, and you probably believed it anyway. If you want some practical advice backed up by evidence then I suggest Jim Trelease's book "The Read Aloud Handbook". I gave this book 2 stars, because I also think that reading aloud to children is fantastic and has many benefits.
Good Starter Book on Encouraging Reading.......2007-01-08
Mem Fox explains the benefits of reading aloud to children - not only does this help teach children to read, but more importantly the time spent creates a bond between child, book, and parent. The author talks about the three secrets of reading: print (making sense of symbols on a page), language (understanding words), and general knowledge (experiences of the world around us). Majority of the children's book examples given are those by the author herself and this book does not give a list of resources or age-appropriate book lists. I consider this book more of a fun and easy to read introduction for parents or would-be parents.
Reading Magic.......2006-02-27
This is one of the best books I have read. It not only provides a useful guide of how to practice reading aloud to children it shatters many old ideas about teaching children to read. As a senior teacher at my school I will certainly recommend this for every teacher on staff, both young and old.
Helpful information for parents willing to develop their childen readership.......2005-09-26
In general the book provides some simple tips of how to help your children to learn reading by having fun and develop a taste for reading. It worked for me, and I would recommend it for parents that are eager to provide their children with a push for developing this important skill.
Brilliant Book by a Beloved Children's Author.......2004-01-30
As a Speech Language Pathologist and Children's Literacy Coach I can attest to the fact that reading to children is a critical element in literacy acquisition. Children must learn the flow of language and the variance and flexibility of words in order to appreciate literature and write well. Reading to children of ALL ages ( yes even middle and high school!) is critical for the development of advanced reading, writing and listening skills. What can be better than creativity and imagination being fostered during a warm, entertaining storytelling session.....with the stories coming from brilliant authors ( like Mem Fox)? I recommend this book to all my parents, my fellow teachers and to my friends. It makes a great book for new parents. It makes a great addition to any one's library who has an interest in children's literature, literacy or storytelling. Thank you Mem Fox for writing such a great book!

My Favorite Gift for New Moms.......2007-01-03
I love giving books as gifts and The Little Big Book for Moms is my hands down favorite for baby showers. It also brings back childhood memories with it's games, poems, songs from the "old days". It's a great help for new moms who may not know or remember these tried and true ways to entertain children. There is also The Little Big Book for Dads and also for Grandmothers.
This little book is a great treasure.......2006-11-12
This is a wonderful colllection of timeless childrens' tales adn activities. We received one as a gift and now give one to the new mothers that we know.
How can one go wrong with such great authors such as: Angelou, Caroll, Driscoll and kipling among others.
LOVE IT!!!.......2006-09-27
I received this book from my friend when my daughter was first born and started reading to her early on. She is now 22 months and loves this book. Every night she wants me to read her a story from this book. She carries this book everywhere with her. She loves the illustrations and when we go out to dinner this book does the trick to entertain her while we wait. The book is now falling apart so I'll soon have to replace with a new one. I strongly recommend it.
Excellent!.......2006-01-16
Product was in excellent condition when it arrived.
The Little Big Book for Moms review.......2005-09-08
This is an excellent source of information for new moms. I have given this as a gift at many baby showers and the response from all is very positive. It's just a wonderful book that I recommend for all...even not so new moms.

Solid release.......2007-03-10
If you like the magazine you'll enjoy this collection. The pictures are well done, not great and not bad. Just a good collection with celebrities. I too think the cover was the best photo.
Fluff.......2007-03-02
Possibly the best picture is the cover. Inside, the photo quality is pretty damn poor and some of the subjects not very attractive to the camera. All in all, a disappointment. I have thrown this in the trash like the bad magazine the pictures come from.
Beautiful, just beautiful........2007-01-06
I know what you're thinking... Anyone reviewing this is just a pervert who wants to gawk at scantilly clad women. I beg to differ. I purchased this book as a reference for figure drawing and I'm very pleased with it. The photographers are very skilled at creating a beautiful setting, creative lighting, and solid composition.

Customer Reviews:
Maybe I'm just too uptight??.......2004-01-06
I ordered this book (two of them) as Christmas gifts for family members. After looking through it, which is basically a collection of naked baby pictures, I realized I couldn't give this book to anyone and I didn't even want people to see it at my house, so I hope to return it. I hate to offend the author, knowing he will probably read this. Maybe he is from Europe or something, where pictures of naked children are more acceptable and not considered perverse. It wouldn't have been quite as bad, except that there is at least one picture of JUST the genital area - no face, no legs, just torso and genitals. Close up. The babies faces are adorable, and clothed babies are great (which there are none of in this book), but this book just seems like a legal dream come true for pedophiles. Why the picture of JUST the genitals? Many of the pictures are of the entire naked baby. At least then you can pretend you're looking at the baby's face. I don't see any point in having so many pictures of naked babies unless you want to come across as a weirdo. Yeah, I realize it's "art". Whatever. It's not the kind of art that's going to be in my house. If you are as embarrassed as me by this sort of thing, don't bother buying this book. I hope I didn't just convince a bunch of pedophiles to purchase this book. Even my husband agreed it was over the top and there was no reason why we couldn't just look at babies' faces or clothed babies. If you want a coffee-table book, get something with travel pictures in it. Or, I hear Al Gore has a new book with family pictures in it (wearing clothes.) Yeah, I'm uptight about this type of thing, but I think most people are just like me, so I wanted to warn you what is actually in there before you buy the book in case you would be as embarrassed as me by having a book like that in your home. I hope Amazon will take this back and issue me a credit.
Coffee Table Book.......2004-01-05
This book has many good examples of pictures of newborn babies but does not have any details on how to take pictures or what techniques to use other than the picture examples. If you are looking for a coffee table book this is the book for you. If you want a book to show you how to .. this is not for you.
Wonderful gift for new parents........1999-01-09
This book captures the unique qualities of a newborn baby. A fleeting moment that most new parents don't appreciate because they are too exhausted! It makes me want to have another baby just to experience those first few days and have a chance to take some pictures of my own.
Fantastic and tastefully documented newborn infant photos.......1997-04-23
Fantastic black and white photography of
newborn infants ranging from 1 to 22 days old.
The photographs are tastefully done and
show the beauty of a newborn. Rather than
bore the reader with words, Schatz allows
the story to be told in photos. I highly
recommend it to anyone interested in
newborns and to all expecting or new
parents.

Great book, easy to read. Lots of information about different hair types and braiding tips. Step-by-step instruction on braiding techniques and braiding styles for all age groups and ethnic backgrounds. If you're into hair cosmetology this is a must have.
This book is ok.......2001-12-18
This book is ok. It has pretty good diagrams. The downfall of this book is that the African American section is the last 20 pages of the book. I thought this book could have been 50/50.

A collection of stories, poems, legends, and myths for parents to read aloud to children aged five to twelve.

A must-have volume!.......2005-01-25
It's been years since I've read aloud from this wonderful anthology to my twin sons who are now 16. But they still remember vibrant, lively selections like "Half a league, half a league, half a league onward ... " (The Charge of the Light Brigade) and "The Ransom of Red Chief" (which they loved but didn't really "get" until they were about 13). I credit this wonderful book with providing truly excellent literature to feed their hungry young brains. This book is part of their current success in school and life! BUY IT for your child or grandchild - or donate it to your local school library!
Awesome book! Highly recommended!.......2002-05-24
This is a keeper! Your kids will love to have you read aloud from this book. It is a compilation of stories arranged according to age-appropriate listening levels. All are well-known stories from well-known authors. Many stories, particularly the longer ones, are only excerpts; the editor has deliberately done this to whet the listeners' appetite.
If you like this book, you will like its companions: More Classics to Read Aloud to Your Children, and Classic Myths to Read Aloud.
Wonderful book for grandparents to give to grandchildren!.......1998-01-29
My father gave this book to me to read aloud while we traveled in the car. I have 4 children -with different attention spans -from teenagers to a Kindergartener- they all listened!! I loved that at the beginning of the books it would give us words thay might not understand and definitions. I loved the idea of knowing how long it would take to read a particular story. Classics that I have not read in years and classics that I have never read were included. If you are going on a car trip this book is a must! Great idea for grandparents to give or have around to read when grandchildren come to visit.

Professional Help for the Private Collector.......2000-01-24
This book was assigned reading in the Museum Studies program I completed several years ago. I found it to be very readable and useful. It is geared to the person who is serious about preserving the treasures he or she has collected or inherited. Among its lessons is the fact that virtually everything we do to maintain our everyday household objects is not appropriate for objects that we would like to see survive for the long term. This book provides valuable guidance on what can be done to preserve the objects we value most. Today, I am a curator of a diverse museum collection, and still find this book helpful and a good refresher.
Excellent for museum professionals without experience.......1998-10-21
I'm purchasing my second copy of Caring for Your Collections. I am the curator of a house museum with a very diverse collection and I have found this to be a handy reference guide with easy to follow instructions for dealing with a wide variety of materials.
Book Description
Here is a family guide to classic novels, contemporary fiction, myths and legends, science fiction and fantasy, folktales, Bible stories, picture books, biographies, holiday stories, and many other books that celebrate virtues and values.
There are more than 300 titles to choose from, each featuring a dramatic story and memorable characters who explore moral ground and the difference between what is right and what is wrong. These books will capture your child's imagination, and conscience as well-whether it is Beauty pondering her promise to Beast, mischievous Max in Where the Wild Things Are, the troubled boys of Lord of the Flies, generous Mr. Badger in The Wind in the Willows, or the courageous struggles of such real-life characters as Frederick Douglass and Anne Frank.
With entries arranged by category and reading level, there is something here for all readers-from preschoolers to teenagers-whatever their tastes may be. Each entry features a complete plot summary and publisher information so that you can find the book with ease in your local library or bookstore. It's not always easy to teach a child the difference between right and wrong, but stories-whether they are based on fantasy or rooted in real life-can speak to children more eloquently than any list of dos or don'ts and can impart moral values as they nurture a child's imagination.

Great Resource for Choosing Books.......2007-10-04
This is an excellent book. It has chapters on various aspects of reasing as well as an annotated list of recommended books. The emphasis on the role of stories in building character is so true and valuable. This is a great resource for any family.
Where Have We Seen This Before?.......2002-09-19
This book is OK, but I think it is merely a rerun of William Bennett's "Book of Virtues", sans William Bennett. And maybe it's just me, but I think the most important and fascinating book to have come along in a long time, if not ever, and is not even included in this book's list, is Norman Thomas Remick's rising star, "West Point: Character Leadership Education, A Book Developed from The Readings And Writings Of Thomas Jefferson".
excellent resource for finding worthwhile books for kids.......2001-11-25
The title of this resource sounds stuffier than it is. The authors' philosophy seems to be one of "less is more" -- making the case, in an interesting and literate foreword and five introductory chapters, that books can be useful and even important resources for trying to help your child figure out what makes life interesting. These books can help provide role models, teach empathy, and transport the reader to a different world or state of mind. The authors de-emphasize problem novels for young adults, which they feel teach self-acceptance rather than improvement and whose authors often sacrifice story for message, opting instead for the mythic, transportive style. I've read a lot of children's literature and still found a number of new and interesting titles here.
Books are divided into genre and then age group (4-8, 8-12, 12+). There is a good science fiction/fantasy section. Other chapters include: picture books; fables and fairy tales; myths, legends and folktales; sacred texts; books for holidays and holy days; historical fiction; contemporary fiction (post WWII); and biography.
The book list contains about 300 books and includes title, author, illustrator, publisher, year of publication and number of pages, as well as a one-page summary of the plot and brief discussion of issues or virtues covered in the selection. Also included: a list of the books, in the order they appear, sans commentary; a short chapter about the Book List; a list of twenty videos deemed worthwhile viewing; a notes section in case you want to delve deeper; and an index. The index is the weak link here. For example, on page 35, one sentence ends " ... just as most good parents, whatever their views on censorship, tend to buy their children books by A. A. Milne and Mark Twain rather than books by the Marquis de Sade." Then the Marquis de Sade is in the index (!) while useful subject terms, like 'loneliness' and 'friendship', are not. Later editions should include a thorough subject index.
A good companion book to Jim Trelease's The Read-Aloud Handbook, and a valuable resource for anyone mentoring children. The commentaries are thoughtful and well written.
A Great Guide to Books Worth Reading.......2001-11-10
As another reviewer pointed out, the title and subtitle of this book may put people off. But this isn't a book that applies a preachy sort of moralism to the task of building a child's character through literature. Far from it. It's a very valuable guide to books that have, and will, stand the test of time as classics. I discovered many wonderful books through this guide and had a great time reading them to my children. The best children's literature is as satisfying on an adult level as it is for the child.
This book is valuable not only for the lists and summaries of good books for children (grouped by age level and category) that takes up most of its pages. The first 60 pages contain five short chapters on the importance of reading for children and of selecting the sort of books that will build their character and intellect. It explains why it does matter what your child reads (not just that they read). Don't skip this reading. No matter how convinced you are of the importance of good literature for a child's development, your conviction and understanding will deepen by reading what the authors have to say in this introductory material.
The fifth chapter has some especially useful guidelines on selecting and sharing good books. Distinguish between issues and virtues: "Having enlightened opinions is no substitute for having character". "Good books are people centered, not problem centered." Context of behavior portrayed in a book is crucial. "Character building books are not simply about good people doing good things. ... The question is not whether unethical behavior is present, but how it is presented". Look for stories that "open up new possibilities and stretch the imagination. ... be wary of stories that focus exclusively on narrow teen or preteen preoccupations, or those that offer nothing more than the therapeutic reassurance that everything is okay". "Look for books in which the main character grows". There is an education here to help you discern for yourself the quality of children's literature. There is also some good advice on how to read to your children; a good list of "do's and don't's" that make reading aloud more productive an fun. It won't be long before your kids are turning off the TV and asking you to read to them. You will have plenty of good material to draw from with this book as your guide.
Character Building.......2001-10-01
It's important for people of all ages to be concerned about character and moral values, especially in these modern days. Themes of classic stories have not really been improved upon over the years; wisdom is timeless. I also recommend Storybook Mentors, Grown-up Wisdom From Children's Classics.
