Thanks. Book arrived. Great condition, fast service. Am happy with it. But I was under the impression it was supposed to come with a cd... ?

I found this book very helpful in developing strategies and interpreting data from the WJ-III. It's a great tool for anyone who assesses children or adults.

This manual is extremely useful when preparing for PPTs and when you are writing reports. I have found the new forms very useful. I would recommend this manual for every special education teacher.

5 out of 5 stars A bargain at twice the price.......2005-01-04

This is a very powerful reference that can be a helpful tool for school psychologists and private practice clinicians. Mather and Jaffe divide this book into four helpful sections. The first has much to do with the Woodcock Johnson-III tests of cognitive abilities and academic achievement. They provide guidelines for assessment interpretation, including hypotheses of origins for varied subtest combinations. The second section of the book provides the reader with samples of varied examples of comprehensive psychological reports. These can help provide guidelines for report writing that includes (but is not limited to) the Woodcock Johnson-III.

The third and fourth sections are what make the book marketable to all practicing clinicians, not only those who use the WJ-III. The third section provides pages of recommendations for varied cognitive and academic weaknesses (such as problems with memory, auditory processing, reading, etc.) The fourth section provides practitioners with a series of strategies or programs that one can implement to help with documented referral concerns. Colleagues of mine who do not use the WJ-III have this book at the ready for the recommendatons and strategies alone.

As can be seen, Mather and Jaffe have created a comprehensive text that will undoubtedly be helpful to any practitioner in psychological assessment. I have not yet found someone who owns the book who has not found it to be extraordinarily helpful. Thank you Dr. Mather and Dr. Jaffe for creating a reference that will assuredly be indirectly helpful for our students.

5 out of 5 stars Woodcock-Johnson III: Reports, Recommendations, & Strategies.......2003-09-25

Woodcock-Johnson III: Reports, Recommendations, and Strategies (Nancy Mather & Lynne Jaffe, New York: Wiley, 2002) is an essential resource, not only for evaluators who use the Woodcock-Johnson III and teachers who use the results of Woodcock-Johnson III (WJ III) assessments, but also for anyone involved in educational evaluation or planning individual educational programs.
The first section of the book begins with a collection of extremely well-designed forms, worksheets, and tables that make it much easier to organize and report WJ III evaluation findings so the findings will be understandable and helpful to teachers and parents. It continues with the clearest explanations I have seen of scores and levels of interpretation, including "sample statements for reports scores and score discrepancies." The section ends with valuable information on interpretation of comparisons between tests and patterns of errors, including a tremendously helpful, three-page table of "task analysis and comparison of selected tests."
The 31 sample reports (27 for children of ages 4 through 17 and 4 for adults) in the second section provide a variety of instructive models, including the use of 41 other tests to supplement the WJ III. Many different report formats are offered with a mixture of disabilities (including none).
The 158 pages of specific, practical, clearly explained recommendations, organized by categories, are a treasure chest for any evaluator or teacher. They include suggestions for further evaluation, accommodations and modifications, and teaching methods. This section could stand alone as a special education textbook. Including appropriate recommendations from this section will tremendously enhance the value of an evaluation report.
Finally, there are 85 pages of specific instructional strategies, some self-contained with needed materials printed in the book and others clear summaries with references to published materials. This clear, detailed presentation will provide even the most experienced evaluator or teacher with valuable, new information and will allow the evaluator to show teachers precisely how to carry out recommended instructional strategies with which the teachers may not be familiar.
The myriad resources in Woodcock-Johnson III: Reports, Recommendations, and Strategies achieve the seemingly contradictory goals of making it easier to write evaluation reports and making the reports much more useful to parents, teachers, and administrators.
The breadth, depth, clarity, and overwhelming utility of Woodcock-Johnson III: Reports, Recommendations, and Strategies make it an essential resource for even the most experienced evaluator or special education teacher as well as an ideal textbook for assessment courses. I enthusiastically recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for 2nd-5th grade!.......2005-04-19

This is the best book I could find about making change and learning about money for elementary students. It worked perfectly for a lesson I did with second graders. I let them work with partners with fake coins learning to add and subtract money. Buy this book! It is impossible for find good books on money and this is a good one.

5 out of 5 stars Reading Practice while Learning to Count Coins!.......2000-04-22

This book was a great way to help children learn about different ways to make the same amount of money, in this case, the fifty cents needed to go to the face painting booth. The story offered several opportunities to practice counting coins, while using repeated, predictable text that is wonderful for early elementary readers.

Does this describe you? You don't know a darn thing about computers, you're doing just fine in your career without computer skills, and you really haven't cared about this so-called computer revolution at all. But now, you're beginning to think that you may want to jump on the bandwagon after all. This Internet thing sounds like fun, and you hear that it's easier to do your taxes with software than on paper.

Woodcock begins by telling you what a personal computer is and what it's good for. Next, she details the beginning steps of Windows 95. You'll find out how to manipulate windows (maximize them, minimize them, and double-click icons to create them). The content eventually guides you through more challenging tasks, such as customizing the appearance of Windows 95 and managing files.

At the end of this book, Woodcock includes a brief introduction to the Internet and explains, succinctly, how to connect to it using Windows 95's Dial-Up Networking feature. The author even shows how to send and receive electronic mail. While there is a limited amount of material here, it is accurate and easy to follow.

Overall, this book is perfect for the absolute PC novice. If you know nothing about Windows PCs, this book will get you on your feet. --David Wall

I am currently a Trainer/Computer Learning Center Coordinator with NationsBank.

I have incorporated this text into a curriculum that enhances and introduces PC technology to people that have never worked on a PC, or are new to the technology.

I especially enjoy the software/CD ROM that accompanies the manual. As it allows people to learn but also to have a reference text, after the tutorials are over.

A must have for any new PC owner!

The pink hearts and little girl on the cover attracted my 5 year old daughter to this book at the library. I was expecting an over the top, overly gushy book. However, the ending very pleasantly surprised me. It taught a valuable lesson about overcoming disappointment (as the girl sleeps thru Valentine's Day), about courage (celebrating the day late when she thinks others won't like it) and saying "I love you" all year round instead of reserving it only for Valentine's Day. With appealing artwork and reasonable rhyming, this was a pleasure to read and re-read to my kids. It's probably about a 4.5 but since I haven't found any other Valentine's Day books out there with this much class (usually just about giving Valentine's cards at school), I bumped it to 5 stars.

Book Description

This book gives a historical account of the chief Latin constructions, aiming to equip students to interpret texts as well as to write correct Latin. The index of passages quoted makes it useful as a reference work for teachers. This is a necessary reference and an indispensible vademecum for teachers and advanced students.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent coverage of Latin syntax.......2001-01-22

As the title suggests, this book discusses and explains Latin syntax, albeit in an advanced manner; it does not give a coverage of morphology and it is not a textbook that contains exercises. The strength of the book lies in its numerous examples of sentences, taken from a number of authors from Terence and Plautus up to Tacitus and Pliny the Younger, to explain the Latin syntax which are presented in an organised and elegant manner. In addition, the author provides an extensive bibliography to direct the reader to the various sources from which he obtained his example sentences. The author presents the grammar - Accusative and Infinitve, The use of the Ablative, Independent uses of the Subjunctive, Conditional Sentences, etc. - chapter by chapter, some being combined in a single chapter, and does so in a manner which is far advanced than an elementary latin grammar book. This book is clearly one of the best latin grammar books I have come across and I believe it will continue to be so for a very long time. If you are keen in furthering your comprehension of Latin and not hesitant to take that extra step, that extra stride from your elementary Latin textbook, then this is the book for you.

Microsoft seems to be indicating that Outlook will be more tightly integrated into future editions of Windows, and that it will become more of an all-purpose messaging and scheduling dashboard than a mere e-mail application. That makes the kind of knowledge that's presented in Introducing Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server all the more valuable. Like other books in the Introducing series, this one provides a fairly high-level overview of its eponymous technology. The emphasis is on getting technicians and managers to think in the right direction before they deploy Exchange 2000 Server, instead of providing them with specific how-to material.

Appropriately, there's a lot of emphasis on the latest version of Exchange Server in comparison to its forebears. Changes in terminology are documented, and the operation of new features is explained with the assistance of copious hierarchy charts and conceptual diagrams. Some of the more informative and readable coverage in this book has to do with Exchange 2000 Server's relationship with the Active Directory features in Windows 2000, but information about the Web Store concept and alternative strategies for deploying the server and its clients also merits close study. Take a look at this one if you're thinking about deploying Exchange 2000 Server and want to know what to expect. --David Wall

Topics covered: A high-level look at Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server and its clients as a way to provide intra- and inter-organizational messaging solutions. Hardware and software requirements are documented, along with aspects of the software's architecture (including its integration with Active Directory, its message-routing mechanisms, its Web Store features, and its scalability features). There is also a section on implementation strategies for organizations of various sizes.

Book Description

Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server is a comprehensive messaging platform that enables the widest possible range of collaborative solutions. INTRODUCING MICROSOFT(r) EXCHANGE 2000 SERVER provides a broad overview of the new features of Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server to help IT professionals with their evaluation and planning while they as they consider rolling out this premier messaging and collaboration platform. This book discusses the major new changes to Exchange Server, including integration with Microsoft Windows(r) 2000 Active Directory(tm) services, the ability to handle larger messages and attachments, and new integration features with Microsoft Internet Information Server. Other topics covered include clustering, and fundamental changes to Exchange's functionality as a result of new scalability capabilities in Windows 2000.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not very useful..........2000-09-17

This book attempts to describes Exchange 2000 features at a high level but doesn't really succeed. What it really describes is the technology that makes up Exchange 2000 but not in a way that would satisfy a technical audience. In the end the reader is left with jumbled descriptions of Active Directory, the Web Store, and various Internet protocols without a clear vision of what Exchange 2000 is all about. What's really missing here are discussions and examples of how all of this technology can actually benifit organizations and the users that they employ. Otherwise, this book only helps the reader become a little more 'buzzword' compliant.

2 out of 5 stars Active Directory / Exchange 2000 Sales Pitch.......2000-08-06

The first half is on Active Directory (131 pages) and the second part on Exchange 2000 (117 pages). Be careful in understanding the title of this book, "Introducing Microsoft Exchange 2000 Exchange Server". The book says its for "Deployment Evaluation" not "Support and Maitenance or Skill Development", and is for the "IT Decision Maker", not the "Beginning IT Professional, IT Web Developer, Corporate IT Developer, or Senior IT Decision Maker."

This book is for someone in a sales / marketing / managerial position. It takes for granted that you know nothing taking time to explain facts such as HTML is a protocol. The first part is VERY repetitive being careful to force Active Directory facts into you 5 or 6 times. This was extremely unuseful to me as I am quite experienced with it.

If you dont need to know Windows 2000 on a technical level, but for decision making or sales, this book is for you. Since over half the book is on Active Directory dont bother if you are already farmiliar with Active Directory.

If you wish to find out something technical, refer to Microsoft's technical book on Exchange 2000, called "Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Administrators Companion" (ISBN: 0735609381). I have ordered it and yet to read it but I expect it will be the best on the market for at least a while.

Just wish I had read a review like this before ordering the book online!

1 out of 5 stars More Like A Marketing Document.......2000-07-19

I bought this book because I am responsible for helping my company design a management product for Exchange 2000. The book offers nothing technical for the reader at all. It is more like a commercial for Exchange 2000. I was able to get the same thing out of the documentation shipping on the Exchange 2000 RC2 CD. The book is only good if you are trying to decide whether to roll out Exchange 2000 or not. However, it offers ZERO assistance in installing, configuring, or maintaining Exchange 2000 at all.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2000-06-10

Like Windows 2000, Exchange 2000 is a whole new ball game. The knowledge printed by Microsoft covers the new integration functionality that you have to read about to learn. I highly recommend this book, plus, since there are no other books out about implementing Exchange 2000, this is surely your best bet!

I purchased this when my now 6 yr old was 3. In the 3 years that we have owned it, (and we have TONS of books), this is the most beat-up and dog-eared book. Both my children love it. It is very informative without being too overwhelming. The illustrations make it all very understandable. It's one of those books that you can sit down and just focus on one page..or thumb through the whole thing. Because of this book, both my kids have a much better understanding of the human body than most other children their age. (Their grandfather, a surgeon, loves this!). Book Description

This is a tightly structured personal narrative set in the grouse and woodcock covers surrounding the author’s home. In his articulate, flowing style, the author focuses his text around bird hunts behind his springer spaniels, including his quintessential hunting dog, now deceased, and his up-and-coming youngster, Caillie. This is far more than a hunting memoir, the author also deals with the demise of huntable land and the life-altering events that affect dogs, hunters and friendship.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Horrid Work.......2007-05-11

Avoid this book like the plague. It reeks of selfishness, elitism, and vanity. I tired to post a lengthier review, but Amazon did not post it. So I thought I would try to post another review. Simply stated, this book has a poor tone which leads one to conclude that hunters are simply interested in using our common resources for their enjoyment alone. This is not true. Most hunters recognize the role of progress in promoting the prosperity needed to protect hunting, but recognize the costs of this arrangement as well. Fergus does not. He takes an absolutist's view that denies individuals the right to develop their communities because this would deprive the enlightened of a favored pursuit. Additionally, he rails against a government that tries to maximize benefits for all, instead of protecting the interests of purists (i.e. his discussion of pheasant management in Pennsylvania). And he regularly divests "the average hunter," who does not have the leisure time needed to participate in the sport as he sees fit, of any dignity as a member of the hunting community. Overall, these deficiencies cause the book to become a poor rant. It simply becomes the tract of an angry whiner who could not deal with the fact that his desired lifestyle was harmed by the progress of others.

4 out of 5 stars A lament that enlightens.......2006-01-19

Fergus's book is ultimately a lament for the destruction of nature in the Bald Eagle Valley of central Pennsylvania. Yes, he does give information about grouse hunting and dogs, enough to satisfy the reader of any shooting book. It is also a song about the delights of hunting birds in the Valley and how that delight has eroded. It is both a happy and a sad song. It should enlighten each reader that every tiny scraping of our natural bounty is an eternal loss.

I recommend it to those thoughtful people who follow dogs into the field and shoot lovingly at grouse.

4 out of 5 stars A Realistic Snapshot of Pennsylvania Grouse Hunting in 2002.......2006-01-12

This 174-page book published in 2005 is the well-written product of a prolific outdoor writer. The author, Charles Fergus, is a long-time hunter who spent years writing for the Pennsylvania Game News and has completed several books about hunting and nature. The dust jacket has a very nice painting by Rod Crossman of a hunter walking along a snow-covered road through woods, accompanied by a dog and carrying a grouse. Inside the book are six small, simple sketches with similar themes: grouse, hunter, dog.

This is not a "how-to" book. It is a contribution to the classic hunting literature that revolves around upland birds, dogs and double guns. I have hunted grouse on Pennsylvania lands that have incuded abandoned strip mines, abandoned nineteenth-century railroads, along an abandoned segment of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, in forested oil fields and in seemingly trackless wild areas. To me, this book is more complex and realistic than any other grouse hunting book that I have read. I recommend this book to all hunters from the central Appalachians and to experienced grouse hunters anywhere. Because of it's complex nature, I would think twice before giving it as a gift and would not recommend it as someone's first grouse-hunting book. Fergus's 1991 book "A Rough Shooting Dog" might be a better introduction to the grouse hunting literature.

The focus of "A Hunter's Book of Days" is a series of grouse and woodcock hunts during Fergus's last hunting season living among the valleys and ridges of central Pennsylvania. It is also a story of Fergus's service on a zoning committee that tried to limit the impact of a new interstate highway. In his mid-40's, fed up with the loss of wild places to development and after the failure of his group's zoning proposals, Fergus and his family moved to Vermont in 2003.

Fergus hunts with classic British double-barreled shotguns, and a friend uses British double-barreled shotguns with damascus barrels and external hammers. The dog Fergus hunts with in the book is a Springer Spaniel.

Fergus demonstrates a deep appreciation for the natural environment. Thanks to a Botany Professor father, Fergus's descriptions of wild places are as complete with the names of the plants and trees as they are with artistic descriptions of the landscape's hues and textures. Some of the descriptions of hunting are as clear, compelling and artistic as any work by other outstanding classic or contemporary grouse hunting writers including Burton Spiller (Grouse Feathers, originally published in 1935) and Ted Nelson Lundrigan (Hunting the Sun, published 1997). Unfortunately for those who enjoy the purity and simplicity of hunting stories, in this book Fergus has commonly chosen to interrupt the flow of beautiful hunting scenes with mention of traffic noise or other irritations of modern life in a developed region. Another example of realism not often attempted by other authors is Fergus's cautionary tale of his own shooting-related hearing loss and how he has coped with it.

It occurs to the reader that this book may have been written primarily as therapy for the writer: an attempt to reconcile a desire by many for commercial development and material goods, Fergus's love for natural areas, the pain of being on the losing side of small-town politics, Fergus's respect for the people and history of the area, and a scarcity of game that can be temporary or permanent.

Game animals including grouse that have been hunted continuously in the northeastern United States for more than 200 years tend to be adaptable. Hunters are adaptable too. In the end, Fergus lets us know that he understands the priorities that his former neighbors have placed on conservation versus development. And grouse still fly in wild places, both in central Pennsylvania and Fergus's new home state of Vermont.

    Book Description

Aspiring cartoon artists, comic book collectors, and nostalgia buffs will discover a happy combination of cartoon history and practical instruction in this color-illustrated book. It teaches art students dozens of ways to simplify, exaggerate, and distort the people, animals, and objects in their illustrations to achieve hilarious effects. An overview of cartoon history showcases humorous characters as they appeared in nineteenth-century satire, in childrenÂ's books, in cartoons of the 1920s, in Hollywood animation of the 1940s, and in todayÂ's manga and anime cartoons. The author shows how to create cartoons using a wide range of media, from pen and ink to paint and pixels. Art students will get tips on making their cartoons interesting with funny props and laughter-evoking backgrounds. Most important are the comic character types that they place in their illustrationsÂ' foregrounds. HereÂ's how to create stock types—the idiot, the cutie-pie, the comic hero, the evil genius, the loyal sidekick, the straight man, and the heavy. Here, too, are imaginative ways to costume different characters, give them funny poses, and dramatize their emotions through facial expressions, such as fear, anger, boredom, amusement, or surprise. A final chapter advises beginning cartoonists on how to build a portfolio, present their work, create a web site, and find an agent and steady work. More than 300 illustrations.

    5 out of 5 stars Great message.......2007-07-05

As a father of a 3-year old girl and another on the way, I'm concerned that our culture "tells" young girls that their worth is dependent on what other people think about how sexually attractive you are. But sports seems to be one way that women can feel good about their bodies without having to worry about what others think about how they look.

At any rate, this book has become one of my favs because it helps my daughter learn about the "true" meaning of the term "Princess" apart from the Disney meaning of the word. That is, she can define herself according to her standards rather than someone else's.

    4 out of 5 stars Girl Power!.......2006-05-16

I love fairy tales, and "The Twelve Dancing Princesses" has always been one of my favorites. I read this book to my daughter and we both loved it. It's a twist on the traditional fairy tale; the princesses sneak away to play basketball, rather than to meet up with hunky princes. It's a major shot of girl power! They don't need to wait around for men to amuse them: they amuse themselves! Go, girls!

My daughter, however, was confused about the multicultural princesses. I explained about families being about love, not color of skin, and she seemed satisfied with that. Personally, I enjoyed the fact that the princesses were all drawn with their own "personalities" (if that can be shown in a picture) and weren't the cookie-cutter princess stereotype of blonde hair, blue eyes, size two...

The rhyme scheme has a few rhythmical flaws, but flows pretty well. The third time (!!) reading it, I did it as a rap, which my daughter really enjoyed.

All in all, a delightful read and a nice way to show girls that they can make their own destinies and enjoy whatever they want to enjoy.
