Book Description
A world that exists in the shadows of our own.
A conflict we will never see.
One woman stands between those determined to control history and those who will risk their lives for freedom.
Maya is hiding in plain sight in London. The twenty-six-year-old has abandoned the dangerous obligations pressed upon her by her father, and chosen instead to live a normal life. But Maya comes from a long line of people who call themselves Harlequins—a fierce group of warriors willing to sacrifice their lives to protect a select few known as Travelers.
Gabriel and Michael Corrigan are brothers living in Los Angeles. Since childhood, the young men have been shaped by stories that their late father was a Traveler, one of a small band of prophets who have vastly influenced the course of history. Travelers are able to attain pure enlightenment, and have for centuries ushered change into the world. Gabriel and Michael, who may have inherited their father’s gifts, have always protected themselves by living “off the Grid”—that is, invisible to the real-life surveillance networks that monitor people in our modern society.
Summoned by her ailing father, Maya is told of the existence of the brothers. The Corrigans are in severe danger, stalked by powerful men known as the Tabula—ruthless mercenaries who have hunted Travelers for generations. This group is determined to inflict order on the world by controlling it, and they view Travelers as an intolerable threat. As Maya races to California to protect the brothers, she is reluctantly pulled back into the cold and solitary Harlequin existence. A colossal battle looms—one that will reveal not only the identities of Gabriel and Michael Corrigan but also a secret history of our time.
Moving from the back alleys of Prague to the heart of Los Angeles, from the high deserts of Arizona to a guarded research facility in New York, The Traveler explores a parallel world that exists alongside our own. John Twelve Hawks’s stunningly suspenseful debut is an international publishing sensation that marks the arrival of a major new talent.

Fun not literature.......2007-10-04
I never saw the hype on this book. I found it by surfing Amazon. An earlier reviewer who compared it to Matrix meets Jason Bourne had it right. This is certainly not literature but it's a fast past blast of a read. The plot has already been summarized by others so I won't do it again. My addition would be that the premise is worth thinking about given the state we are in today. It's an e-ticket ride but a thoughtful one in between the mayhem.
Quick read.......2007-09-26
Quick, unchallenging, fun, entertaining read.
Does not make you think to much, if you need a fast read for a long weekend, then The Traveler will work.
Enjoy!
The Traveler by John Twelve Hawks.......2007-09-19
This book actually generated quite a bit of buzz before it was released last June and I had it recommended to me by a few people saying that it was in the vein of Stephen King, and since I'm a fan I would probably enjoy this. I managed to get an ARC through the bookstore I used to work at and then it sat on my shelf for about six months until I picked it up and decided to start reading it last week. I finished it about four days later after pretty much eating it up. I would describe it as very akin to a Michael Crichton techno-thriller with some plenty of sci-fi mixed in. After getting about a hundred pages into it I was even wondering if Crichton much just be working on this same book currently because of its similarities with his story lines, the main difference being that this was a little slower and the characters had more depth to them. After finished this book I realize that this has certain elements that Crichton would never put in his book make this an enjoyable original piece of fiction. If the Matrix trilogy had originally been made into a book trilogy and done by a good writer, it would've been something like The Traveler.
The book is set near to the present day or perhaps twenty or thirty years into the future. The world is pretty much like it is now, except for being a little more high-tech and with better gadgets. There is a group of people known as Travelers who have the unique ability of being able to leave their bodies and travel to other worlds or realms. They have existed for many thousands of years, Jesus and Mohammed are though to have been travelers. There is a group of people known as the Tabula whose job it is to eradicate these travelers by whatever means necessary. They have also been in existence for a long time. Then there is a group called the Harlequins whose job it is to project the Travelers by whatever means necessary; again they have been around for a very long time.
In the present it is thought that no travelers are in existence anymore, having been wiped out by the Tabula, while the Harlequins have been reduced to very small numbers. Our main character is the daughter of a Harlequin whose father is soon killed in the book and while she had renounced her duty as a Harlequin, due to the lack of these people remaining, she has been summoned to become a Harlequin once more, because two offspring of a traveler have been found alive in California. The traveler's gift is usually passed down through genes, though this is not certain. It is her job to find those two brothers and keep them safe. The Tabula also know of the existence of these two brothers, but their modus operandi has changed dramatically. They no longer wish to kill the Travelers, but to harness their powers. The reason being that using past Travelers they have been in contact with another race living in one of the other realms that the Travelers go to, and this race is vastly superior and more intelligent and has been sending them new inventions and technology such as creating quantum computers that can measure how Travelers pass into these other realms as well as being able to send additional matter into these realms. So they want to use the Travelers as guinea pigs to work with this new race.
This the setting of the book with a lot more details than I have given and features great chase scenes and amazing fights. The Harlequins are taught from when they are children how to fight with different weapons. At the same time the Tabula basically have the Internet, all technology, the government, police, etc. under their control. So their world has its similarities to that of The Matrix, as well as to Stephenson's Snow Crash and Gibson's Neuromancer; and I also saw a lot of Blade Runner in the book too. With the world in its current state, it's not surprising that a book like this has been written. The good thing is that apart from being a really great read, it is the first book in a trilogy and hopefully unlike the Matrix trilogy, it will not doom itself to an ugly death before one is half way through the second book.
Interestingly, the author John Twelve Hawks is very much a recluse who apparently has never met with his agent, has been working on the book for a long time, and has never owned nor has he ever watched any TV. So there are some thought-provoking parallels to keep in mind, along with some strange websites that have been created for the book, though it almost seems as if some of them were created before the book came out, which is just plain weird.

With a whetted apetite I jumped into the second book. (The second book is book one of three ).
The author has cast a wide net and brought us into a fast paced and facinating world.
I am ready to strap on my seatbelt and start Book two (3)!!!!!!!!
5 stars?! What are you people smoking?.......2007-09-07
Just finished The Traveler. I don't think I'll be reading the sequels. Very unfulfilling. Not trash, but having just graduated with a creative writing degree I have to say that it seems like the book went to print without an editor. It's rife with cliches. The phrasing is awkward at times. The similes feel forced. The action is minimal and poorly rendered (When you're doing a "spinning back-kick" steel-toed boots don't help much since you're mking contact with the sole of your foot.) The secret history aspect of the book leaves much to be desired. (The Illuminatus Trilogy blows the doors off this lightweight if you're looking for age-old conspiracies.) Honestly, there were so many instances where I wished that I could have given some feedback to this inept writer before the book went to print. I'm not saying he's terrible, but for the amount of hype that this book have been getting...let's save our genuine praise for books of more merit. There is a huge void in this genre, and I think that this book is doing so well due to a lack of competition; it is filling that void in a way that Clancy and Brown aren't really capable of. I can't think of any books published in the last year that are along the same lines. People want this kind of a story, but they want it done well, with characters that have depth and action that matches the story's ambition. For sci-fi I think I'm going to stick with Asimov, Simmons, Card, and Bradbury for a while. The Traveler was enough junk food to last me a few years. If anything, though, it is a nice example of what not to do, or at least what can be done with minimal effort. I would say that it shows promise. Maybe in a few years Mr. Twelve Hawks will have organized his philosophy and weaved it into something that sounds more like storytelling and less like preaching.

Noncutesy Wildlife.......2007-03-13
This book was one of my alltime favorites as a child (in the late 60's). I grew up on the prairies, so badger holes and fields of waving grasses, as well as neighbors with rifles, were part of everyday life to me. I loved the quiet child who fit in with animals more than humans, and the relationship with the wild mother badger. The world created was more realistic and naturalistic than that portrayed by cheery kids books like the Berensteins and Dr. Seuss. There was tragedy as well as compassion: the mother badger has been caught in a trap, her babies have died of hunger, she is hurting and in pain. These are realistic concerns in nature. Not all is cute fuzzy puppies and loving understanding adults. In the end, the misunderstanding between the child who has been cared for by the badger, and the adults who only see a dangerous wild beast, very much touched my child mind and reflected my experience with adults. I saw injustice in the real world left right and center and it was seldom reflected in children's books. This is one of the deeper children's books I have read, that doesn't shy away from the complexities of life, difficult emotions and depth of feeling. I have reread it recently as an adult, and it still touched me. I highly recommend it.
Great Book!.......2007-01-28
Incident At Hawks Hill is a great book! It may start out a little on the slow side but once you get into the story, it's great! Here is a book report type thing on the book. Ben Macdonald is a shy boy who took a liking to imatating animals' body language. No one believes he has much value exept for his mother, Esther. But not even she can get him to talk and be a normal boy of his age. He is small and light in his weight. Well at least for his age. On one of his jouneys on the prairie he finds a mouse that had just been killed with younglings alive. He knows the baby mice will not survive, so when a badger comes close to him he feeds her the mice, being careful to put them out of their misery quickly. One day he wanders out on the prairie following a praire chicken. By the time he tries to come home for lunch he has found himself lost in the prairie. When he seeks shelter he finds the same badger that he fed wild mice to. Will he make it back to his family. To find out what happens next read the book. Also the other reviews have a very good description. If you read this book I hope you enjoy it. The sequel is also good. Thank You for reading my review.
Encore.......2005-12-20
This little boy was stranded all alone out on the prairie, and the only other helpful being there was a badger. Ben, a 6 year old boy can act like animals as if he was their brother. He picks an animal, then can follow it for hours acting like it, and making noises like it. But one day, when he was mocking a chicken he wandered too far. When he noticed it was about lunch time he turned back to go home, but there wasn't a house in sight. Clouds rolled over and a thunderstorm broke out. Ben raced around for cover. He tripped in a large tunnelish hole in his scurry. Without further ado he wrenched himself in. The next morning, he dug himself through the rest of the tunnel, to find himself in a huge chamber, and to his surprise there was a badger there. Throughout the next two months Ben lived with this badger, acting like it and becoming more like it everyday. When his brother finally found him though, he was reluctant to go home. Later after he realized where he was, (home) his badger came back, who he saved by throwing himself over her before she was shot by his father. The next day while the badger was chilling in the sun by the house, the mean neighbor arrived, thinking that the badger was trespassing, he shot her. When he was about to burry her, he realized that she was still breathing, taking her back in the house, Ben could only hope that she would live. This book was filled with action, fun times, and sad events.
There was for sure a ton of action. Ben was here, Ben was there, where wasn't he? His badger would be trapped, she would escape, and then Ben would get lost. Later Ben would be found, but his badger pops in, what doesn't happen to Ben anyway?
This book had many, many fun times in it. Ben would dance around after discovering that she's breathing (the badger). And then Ben would jump for joy that he lived, because of the wonderful badger.
Even though this book was good, it was very sad. The badger's pups died. Ben almost died from starvation before the badger helped him. The badger's mate dies, and then the badger almost dies herself.
I really enjoyed reading this book, and I think anyone could too, for it was sad, yet happy, and filled with action!

Strange book........2005-12-02
I too was required to read this book in the 6th grade. I couldn't understand how this book could be an award then or now. I'm a huge Eckert fan, but this story just doesn't cut the mustard. For a better Eckert book, check out Johnny Logan
Utterly ridiculous - even for fiction.......2005-08-12
When yours truly was eleven and in Reading class, "Incident" was required reading. This had to be the most ridiculous book that I ever had the displeasure of reading. I mean, the boy is cared for by a badger! Badgers are mean and ornery critters that don't much like people or even their own kind. I did not believe it at eleven, nor do I now.
Also, Eckert certainly didn't need to include some of those descriptions. Was it really necessary to describe a mother badger eating her offspring's excrement? What eleven-year-old wants to read about that?
So, for kids who like to read long descriptive passages about things they really didn't want to know about in the first place: this book's for you.

Some issues..........2007-09-08
I wasn't thrilled with this book. I found it a little didactic (albeit in an overly breezy style)--not the book for people who aren't sure about natural birth; it'll make middle-of-the-road moms feel inadequate.
The style is blog-like and too personal to the author at times for an instructive book, in my opinion. The section that's nothing more than quoted emails is interesting for a couple of pages, then becomes overkill; I felt like I was reading a message board.
I noted numerous typographical errors (including a major one in statistics that was corrected with an errata sticker), which detracted from the professionalism of the book.
The section on Cytotec is excellent, with an appropriately firm stance, and the facts and documents to back that up.
Be sure to buy a "new" version of this book from Square One.......2006-12-14
Please be aware that this book is now published by Square One Publishers and has been since earlier this year. To get brand-new copies of this book, you need to go to the "other" product page for the book HEY! WHO'S HAVING THIS BABY ANYWAY? as listed on this website. It doesn't presently have the "Search Inside the Book" feature at that product page, but the book is immediately available to be ordered over at that other product page. So to paraphrase Dylan (a.k.a. Zimmerman), "This ain't the book you want, babe / Go to the other page." Now go have those babies over at the "other" product page . . .
Great Preparing For The Birth YOU want!.......2006-06-14
I have the pleasure of teaching this course to my clients during their childbirth education class, all are finding this book to be a very easy read with clear to the point FACTUAL information! This is a must have and every one of my Doula clients get it for FREE and must read it by their 37th week of pregnancy!
Thank You Breck Hawk!.......2005-11-01
I had the pleasure of attending one of Ms. Hawk's workshops recently and found it so informative. The information in this book is not new - it's just written in a way that the layperson can understand. Ina May Gaskin and Henci Goer have lots of great information about the unfortunate state of childbirth in the US, but Breck Hawk has "broken it down" for the average expectant mom without condescending. I highly recommend it!
One of the BEST books ever written for pregnant women!!.......2005-10-31
As both a childbirth educator and a labor doula, I find this book has great (and accurate) information, with worksheets that are perfect for discovering what you want as a pregnant woman, good research to help backup all the claims, PLUS it's written by a midwife! I could go on and on, so just put away that copy of "What to Expect When You're Expecting" and get this one instead! Inform yourself and respect your baby!

Heart of a Hawk Review.......2007-03-26
Deborah, I read the entire book. It fits my situation with my family really close. It was like you were looking into our living room the morning of November 10. Your book has given me insight into some of what is coming next in our life. As hard as it will be, at least I can prepare myself for the next few months. The book let us into your home, your sorrow, hurt, anger, grief. It puts your whole life in print. I hope others gain as much as I did.
A journey of healing.......2007-02-07
Amazing healing powers. I lost my nephew in July,2006. It was comforting to know how other people greve the loss of our brave soldiers. I too have seen a Red tailed hawk in the garden behind my sister's house. I, too hope it was Tom telling us he was near us. This book is a powerful story of one family search for healing. I recommend this book to any one who has lost a child, or to anyone who wants to read about the power of love in healing our hearts.
Heart of a Hawk.......2007-01-11
I haven't received it yet. I just realized that this is the book that I ordered in October and I have not gotten it yet. I have been billed and paid for it but did not get it. The five star rating is an anticipated rating if and when I get it.
Very moving.......2006-10-13
Heart of a Hawk is a great read, very moving. There is some food for thought in this book. It is indeed about a journey for one brave American family, their challenges and struggle to get through the most trying and difficult times that life has brought them. I cried as the words conveyed the pain, frustration, and confusion over the loss of their son and his seemingly untimely death. I appreciated the subject matter on how spirituality can and does play a role and what happens when beliefs are not shared or honored. The book has a roller coaster of emotion covering all aspects of a family suffering, everything from step-relations, religion, marital issues, military life, human bonding and connection. I felt by the time I was done reading it I knew Patrick and somehow I miss him even though I never met him. He is a lost soul that found his way and in the end did some amazing things that can make all who love him very proud. He did not die in vain. It took courage for Ms. Tainsh to write this book about her personal feelings revolving around her family to make her life truly an open book. My heart goes out to the Tainsh family as well as to Kacee.
From a technical side I did not like the 3rd person writing style, I question the editor, where were you? It's a great story but the format could have been done differently in a far more powerful way. I had issues w/some of the redundancy, but then I realized these thoughts are indeed repeated thoughts that one experiences during the grieving process. It is like I was able to get inside the author's head, it got to me, knowing and feeling what was so real for her. On a humorous note, they are a family that loves their coffee! I appreciate Mrs. Tainsh sharing her story and her son's service to our country. I found it very meaningful and it helped me to understand what some of my friends go through that have lost a loved one in Iraq.

Old Fish Hawk.......2007-07-09
I just finished probably the best audio book on cassette that I have ever heard. Though it didn't belong to our library's collection at the time it so intrigued me, it has now been generously donated to our branch for everyone to enjoy.
Read by the author, this tale of an old Osage Indian, known by all as Fish Hawk, is a dramatically moving story that will bring tears to the eyes of anyone who has a special place in his heart for the beauty/cruelty of nature and for the less advantaged living among us.
The last of a vanishing breed, Fish Hawk had lived on the fringe of the white man's world for many years but, weighed down by the burden of feeling useless, he was ready to return to the land of his ancestors to live out the last years of his life. Only with the help of a young white boy was he able to regain the sense of dignity and respect it took for him to complete his journey home.
"Old Fish Hawk", written and vividly narrated by native Ozarkian Mitch Jayne, was enhanced even more by the accompaniment of the flute, mandolin, fiddle, harmonica, banjo, accordion, and guitar.
It's an audio book that you'll not want to come to an end, and a story that you'll never forget.
Old Fish Hawk, Audio Abridged Edition.......2001-08-25
A very nice story, well told. True to the time period and location, the Missouri Ozarks in the mid 1800s. Read by the author with a pure, Southern Ozarks accent. This can take some getting used to, even for a Missouri native like myself, but don't give up on it, the story is worth the listening effort. My one criticism would be that Mr. Jaynes seems to be a little rushed in his reading, which makes interpretion of his accent that much more difficult.
A riveting, satisfying read.......2001-08-22
Clearing out my mother's house last month, I came across this old paperback. It had my sister's name in it, so I brought it home to mail to her, as she is out of state. I decided to go ahead and read it beforehand. From the first chapter, I was hooked. It is a story of redemption such as you rarely get to read. It had some truly admirable characters, and built up enough suspense that it was hard to put it down and sleep.

Addie's Bad Day (I Can Read Book 2)
ASIN: 1553371631 |
Book Description
Addie, a young girl growing up on a prairie farm in the 1930s, is scared of almost everything -- the big turkey gobbler in the yard, thunderstorms, rats and the big bull on the way to her grandmother's house. But things change one afternoon when a hawk swoops down, threatening her grandmother's chickens. In the face of real danger, Addie summons courage from deep within herself to scare the hawk away. When Addie Was Scared -- based on the real-life experience of the author and illustrator's mother -- is a dramatic and affirming story, lovingly told in spare and eloquent prose. Children will relate to Addie, and her experience will inspire them to find their own ways to be brave -- just when they need to be.

Attention mothers! This is a must!.......2000-05-22
Addie was afraid a lot... That's the beginning of this marvelous book. It goes on to explain all the things she is afraid of. Then, at a key moment in time, Addie "looks inside herself.." and finds that she is brave when she needs to be. I found this book in the library and brought it home to my very own "Addie" (not that's not her name, but boy did she fit the profile....). Now she tells me when she's scared that she is going to find the brave place inside herself, just like Addie. Now I'm buying her her own copy. The great thing about the book is that it doesn't have a magical ending. Addie doesn't suddenly stop being afraid of everything, she just learns that there is more inside her that she thought. A great book for everyone, and a must read for ALL the Addies of the world!
