Book Description

Long considered creatures of myth and mystery, owls actually are commonplace if one knows how and where to look--often no further than one's own backyard. The Suttons--husband and wife naturalist team--have created a lavish, full-color spotter's guide, with a thorough description of owls, their habitat, range, diet, breeding and nesting habits.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars How to Spot an Owl.......2005-03-15

Owls are unique and fascinating, but, unfortunately, also quite elusive, which makes their observation quite frustrating for the beginning birder. This guide was written--reluctantly--to lessen some of that frustration. Reluctantly, because, while the authors wish to indroduce the owl to new generations of birders, at the same time they are very concerned about adverse influence that birders can have on owls. The book consists of two parts: an introduction to birding for owls, and the owls of North America. In the latter, each species that is found in North America is discussed to some degree. While the Whiskered Screech Owl, which only occurs near the Mexican-American border in southern Arizon, only has two paragraphs devoted to it, other species are covered by a number of pages. Information is largely anecdotal and easy to read. At least one photograph of most species is included, the quality of which is usually excellent.

If I had only one book to buy about owls, this one is it. It is a howling success!

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful to new "owlers".......1998-12-08

I originally got this book when I found a trio of young screech owls in my favorite river area. It gives a lot of information that is USEFUL to people who really want to see owls. Kinds of owls, signs of owls to look for, crisp b/w photos, and some common sense ettiquette. Good book!

Birds of prey can be particularly difficult to track for a variety of reasons: - Nocturnal behavior - Remote habitats - Migratory patterns - Swift flight speeds

Hawks and Owls depicts both the subtle differences and rich diversity among these awe-inspiring birds. With crisp, clean photographs and precise identification notes, this guide makes quick and accurate classifications easier.

The families of birds includes:

The information on each species is concisely organized and includes the differences between male and female, seasonal and immature plumage, morphs and distinctive markings. Color pictures and range maps accompany the text. The 180 photographs from award-winning photographers show these birds in their natural environments through the seasons. Comparison pages group similar-looking birds on a single page for quick reference.

Hawks and Owls is a sturdy, pocket-sized field guide that will be indispensable to naturalists, students and birders at all levels of experience, from Florida to Ontario.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Not only for beginners........2005-09-18

The excellent quality of this field guide matches others by Chris Earley. Being able to study the large, clear, color closeups of these species will enhance your identification skills. Seasonal range maps, special notations, calls and sounds made, plus additional comparison charts in the back make this another must have. It's lightweight, easy to carry and worth adding to your collection of field guides!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide for the Beginner.......2005-03-15

Birds of prey are regarded with particular fascination by many birders, but their identification presents a number of problems that can daunt the beginner. Hawks & Owls of the Great Lakes Region and Eastern North America, therefore, is an excellent introductory guide.

Each species has between two to four pages devotes to it. The majority of this space consists of photographs, depicting the species in flight and perched; save for a few, the photographs are crisp and clear. Aside from the brief introductory note and the more brief "nature notes," text is devoted to pointing out key features of the given species. Size, characteristics while perched and in flight, differences between males, females and juveniles, flight traits, and distinguishing calls are dealt with for each species, while relevant information concerning morphs and second year plummage, etc. is included when applicable.

Overall, I'm very impressed by this guide and highly recommend it to the beginning birder.

4 out of 5 stars A Welcome Addition to a Crowded Field.......2004-07-09

A lingering perk: Some publishers still have my name listed as editor of the NAFA Hawk Chalk. Evidently Firefly Books is one, and I'm thankful for that. Some very good natural history and reference titles are available from this company, and they recently sent me one for review.

Chris G. Earley (the Canadian biologist who produced similar regional guides to sparrows & finches, and warblers; both titles with Firefly) makes an excellent addition to the growing list of photographic guides to North American raptors. There are some heavy hitters in this field already (e.g., Clark and Wheeler's 1995 guide and subsequent editions), which raise the bar for any newcomers. But Earley's concise volume is well constructed and worth adding to any falconer or birder's library.

Earley presents the raptors (diurnals first, then the owls) in their basic taxonomic groups or genera. He opens with a brief discussion of the guide's conventions (size comparisons, the standard icons he uses for quick reference, etc.) and good, basic advice for hawk watchers (to wit: watch the hawk first, as long as you can, then look it up). He completes his introduction with diagrams of avian anatomy as they relate to field identification, adding notes on common "hawk look-alikes" and a chart for best raptor viewing by season and species.

The following species accounts are brief, each covering two to four pages with large, well-composed color photos illustrating. A short note on natural history is typically accompanied by viewing and ID tips (some include literary quotes), and capped with the book's standardized set of icons and field notes. The author's selection of images is especially helpful, with color morphs and age-appropriate plumages displayed in easy-to-compare views. It is noteworthy that unlike some of the less qualified sources of raptor photo ID (especially those on the Web), the Cooper's hawks shown herein are actually Cooper's hawks; the Sharp-shins actually Sharp-shins. One particularly fine image (by Brian Wheeler) shows an adult male and female Cooper's standing together and dramatically captures their size dimorphism.

Earley closes this small volume with notes on how the public may help and observe raptors in their area, some suggested reading and a very helpful photographic "summing up" of included species that allows, via a series of charts, direct comparisons of similar species: the accipiters to each other, buteos to other buteos, and so on, which saves the reader the task of flipping pages to note the differences. Of course, I happily flipped between the pages anyway.

Book Description

From the USA Today bestselling authors of People of the Masks he oldest city in America is not St. Augustine, Florida (1565 AD) or even Old Aralbi of the Hopi Mesas (1240 AD), but the vast 400-acre earthen mound of Poverty Point, Louisiana, dating back some 3500 years. A booming commercial center, its thousands of inhabitants traded as far north as Wisconsin and Ohio. People of the Owl tells the story of this vast trading empire and its people-their war stories and songs, and their fiery loves. Most of all, this is the story of the noble warrior and shaman, Sala-mander. An im-passioned messiah, his stirring vision would shape the People of the Owl, inspire their dreams, fire their faith, and lead them into truth-and sometimes into slaughter.

5 out of 5 stars People of the Owl (The First North Americans Series).......2007-06-11

I've loved everything I've read by the Gears and I've read just about everything they have published. Wonderful interposing of fiction onto the facts! They use their expertise as anthropologists and as story tellers to combine what really has been found about North American Indians and interpose a very believable story onto it. They really make the past come alive! The inclusion of what has really been found by anthropologists adds tremendously to the books!

5 out of 5 stars a great read!!.......2006-03-15

I loved this book. I was transported back in time. I could picure my self in the village. my only down side with it was thw ending but it was sill a great read!!

5 out of 5 stars Fab...........2005-10-31

Another engrosing book from the Gear duo. However, it took quite awhile for me to get pulled in. About twelve chapters or so. When I finally did get sucked in I stayed up until the wee hours of the morning to finish the story. I do wish I could have found out a completion for the Anhinga character, I felt we were left hanging there for some reason. The other thing I wish would be completed would be the lead-in story lines. otherwise, I love the Pre-historic America series.

5 out of 5 stars excellent and would read again!!!.......2005-10-16

I like some of the others thought there was a lot of characters. However, I thought this book was EXCELLENT, and would read it again in a heartbeat!!! A lot of intrigue, no swearing and not big with the sex!!! Very refreshing not to have that.

5 out of 5 stars And yet again.......2005-10-12

Another great read in a continuing series. "Owl" was hard to put down, as usual with this couple's writing.

    Book Description

Grey Owl was born Archibald Stansfeld Belaney, the son of an aristocrat in Hastings, England, in 1888. Raised by his two aunts, he led a lonely childhood in England until 1906, when, at the tender age of seventeen, he emigrated to North America to live among the Native people. He returned to England a few years later to serve in the First World War, was wounded, and returned to live with the Ojibway in northern Canada.

In mid-life Archibald Belaney adopted the Ojibway name Wa-sha-quon-asin, or Grey Owl. He married three times and fathered three children. He also lived for many years with an Ojibway woman named Anahareo, moved to northern Quebec, where he began his writing career in earnest.

All of Grey Owl's stories are based on true-life experiences. As a canoeman, packer guide, fur trapper, naturalist, and storyteller, Grey Owl's nature writings have delighted readers worldwide since they first began to appear in 1929. That same year Grey Owl began to lecture as a conservationist.

During the course of his writing career, Grey Owl's deep love and respect for nature created a body of work devoted to promoting conservation awareness through true tales of life lived in the wilderness. Grey Owl: Three Complete and Unabridged Works contains three of his best-loved works.

The Men of the Last Frontier was Grey Owl's first book, published in 1931. In this collection of stories, Grey Owl, one of the early voices to sound an alarm for increased conservation, tells about his life on the trail, his Native friends, and their animal companions. In so doing, Grey Owl hoped to evoke sympathy and caring for the land that sustains us all.

Pilgrims of the Wild was published in 1934. Primarily an animal story, it also relates Grey Owl and Anahareo's struggle to emerge from the chaos that followed the failure of the fur trade and the breakdown of the old proprietary system of hunting grounds. This is a humble and moving collection that paints a beautiful picture of a quickly changing land.

Sajo and the Beaver People was published in 1935. The "beaver people" are two beaver kittens rescued and adopted by an Indian hunter. The kittens soon become the beloved pets of the entire village. Their adventures and eventual reunion with their parents make this one of the most touching and irresistible stories in Grey Owl's body of work.

Grey Owl will be fondly remembered as both a mystery and a legend. His love of nature and the wilderness and his stories of life as a guide have become part of the canon of nature writing.

    Book Description

There are 19 species of owls in North America and a spectacularly-illustrated chapter is devoted to each in this intriguing natural history narrative. Author Jim Burns takes the reader on a journey of discovering owls during his travels across the United States. His two rules of owling—that owls never appear when and where they are expected, and that owls always appear when and where they are least expected—set the tone for this informative and exciting excursion into the world of owls. The essays are combined with stunning full-color images of these elusive birds, and as these birds are so often heard and not seen, an audio CD is part of this complete owl package, showcasing the magnificent calls of these beautiful and mysterious birds. Jim Burns has been photographing birds for over 20 years. Widely known and appreciated in the birding world, he has been published in Birding, Birders World, and the Cactus Wrendition.

I've always been intrigued by owls. Jim Burns has as well. His knowledge and expertise are rivaled only by his sincerity and passion. His goal, via this book, is not so much that you come to understand owls...but that you come to appreciate owls. His goal is mightily accomplished.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, Great pictures.......2007-01-09

Wow, what great photography. Jim Burns without question knows how to use a camera as well as his pen. The stories make me want to plan my next trip out into the wilderness. I will use the photography as a refrence for years to come. nice work

    5 out of 5 stars Five-hooters, eight-hooters, great hooters.......2005-02-20

All of my favorite scenes in the Harry Potter movies involve owls. Now that I live in the woods, I can hear owls hooting almost every night, but how can I go about identifying them? Is there someone out there who is even nuttier about owls than I am? Someone who has actually spent nights out in the woods with a flashlight and camera, identifying these mysterious birds? The answer of course, is yes. Jim Burns, author of "North American Owls" doesn't write a 'mere' natural history text about these (mostly) nocturnal predators. He also narrates his journeys of discovery, from Alaska to southern Arizona, usually accompanied by Deva and the bumbles (his wife and two boys). His stories sing a mysterious, mythical, even mystical nocturne. He familiarizes us with "the more nebulous and mysterious aspects of [the owls'] darker side."

Owls are creatures of wisdom, harbingers of death. Even a naturalist of "reputed backcountry acumen and skill feels a little shaky thrashing around in the dead of night chasing ghosts." The chapter on Long-Eared Owls is written as a poem, and many of the narratives of other North American owls lapse into blank verse.

The book's photographs equal the beauty and strangeness of the text. One photograph of a Short-Eared Owl shows its head rotated so that its beak is pointed at 'two-o'clock.' I knew owls could swivel their heads around to look over their backs, but I had no idea they could rotate them like the hands of a clock. I laugh every time I come across this photo. The photos also capture the predatory nature of owls: bloody bits of rabbit and mouse dangling from their claws and beaks.

The author, Jim Burns, has been photographing birds for over 20 years and many of the pictures in this book are his. I am guessing from the text that his favorite photograph is one he took of a Northern Pygmy-Owl, silhouetted against a hazy solar disk, mouse clutched in talons--more art than identification photograph. My own favorite is of a soaring Snowy Owl, because that's the only owl I've ever seen, gliding down the road ahead of me on a cold December evening. I swear its wings spanned the entire width of the state highway. Big. Silent. Snow-colored. Eerie. A visitor from the Arctic that we Michiganders are rarely privileged to see.

This book also contains sidebars with identification features, habits, and range/habitat maps. A CD is included with the book that contains the vocalizations of all nineteen owls included in the text. My only complaint is that the author did not include his own vocalizations on each track in order to identify the owl that is hooting, screeching, or barking. You have to follow the track numbers in order to identify the owl--a small complaint indeed, concerning a very fine book.

Incidentally, one of the things I learned from this book is that Harry Potter's owl Hedwig is a MALE Snowy Owl.

    5 out of 5 stars Journey.......2004-06-17

Instead of creating another field guide, bird photographer Jim Burns has approached writing this book from a different angle. Covering 19 species of North American owls, he sets about describing his own personal observations and experiences with each species in a "journal of owling". His style of writing brings forth the mysterious and illusive side of owls and owling, creating in the reader a sense of desire to experience the owls as he did.
The writings for each species are accompanied by beautiful photographs, including wing detail from above and below. There is also a brief statistics table for each species covering description, size, vocalization, nesting, movements, habits, range and habitat.
Accompanying the Book is short audio CD containing the calls of each of the species in the book. Generally, it is the main call, but several tracks have alternative songs as well. For this reason, it would have been good to have a more detailed track listing than the one provided in the book.
Overall, "North American Owls, a Journey through a Shadowed World" is a splendid experience for any owl lover, and is likely to draw all readers to this unique bird family.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Photographs.......2004-05-17

Mr. Burns has done a wonderful job in putting together this book for use by either a layman or a serious birdwatcher. I had the fortune to meet Jim and his wife Deva and they are fascinating people. Jim came across as very knowledgeable not just about owls, but about North American birds in general. His photography is superb despite the inherent difficulty of photographing owls. And the accompanying narrative is a delight to follow. Kudos to Mr. Burns for succeeding admirably on a challenging topic!

Although it might seem dated, the information in this book is extraordinarily complete, with detailed descriptions of anatomy, behavior, and chapters devoted to specific species. You might consider a book like "Owls: The Silent Fliers" just for it's excellent photographs, but if you want detailed information, P. Johnsgard's book is unmatched. Note also, although it's fine photographs may be moderate in number, the technical illustrations far exceed all other books I've seen on owls.

I have many books on owls, and this is one of the most comprehesive books that I have seen on the natural history of owls. There are good drawings and photographs in the first 15 pages of the book. The classification and evolution section was of great interest to me and very useful. The natural histories of each species is very in-depth and thorough. There is also a glossary, which is very helpful in defining words which you may not know. Overall, the book is excellent, and I would highly recommend it to the beginner, novice, or expert birder.

      5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking artwork!.......2004-10-06

This is a marvelous book for anyone who in interested in knowing just about everything there is to know about owls. I found this book when I was given an injured owl and needed a quick course on owls. I found it at the library and found SO much good information, and I was absolutely amazed by the wonderful illustrations. I knew I would have to have a copy for myself. The detail about each owl is complete and even if you just look at the 'pictures', you will fall in love with this book, too!
