Book Description

Bird watching is America's second most popular hobby after gardening. According to a recent survey, approximately 63 million Americans report that they watch and feed birds at home. With its beautiful four-color layout, The Backyard Bird Feeder's Bible is the ideal guide for beginning to intermediate bird watchers. And author Sally Roth's reassuring and friendly voice make this book a standout among the many more academic-style bird books currently on the market. Each colorful section is arranged alphabetically and addresses birds from each region of the country-even explaining the different food requirements for birds in different regions. Roth helps readers cut the costs of their favorite activity with economical tips throughout, from buying less expensive seed like cracked corn to using food leftovers as winter treats. Readers will delight in the color photos of the most popular feeder birds and will enjoy projects for making feeders, food mixtures, and 'food crafts,' such as birdseed wreaths.

5 out of 5 stars Help! He Won't Give Back My Book!.......2006-08-15

I barely got to look at the thing!

I made the mistake of allowing my young nephew to glance through it a few days ago. The next thing I know he takes it home with him and won't bring it back to me. (Well, he 'would' because he's that kind of guy... but I think I am going to allow him to keep it.)

Apparently this book had the remarkable effect of sparking in him a sudden interest in the hobby of attracting and feeding birds.

Actually, all summer long we have been visited at our little place in the country by birds of all sorts and we have been feeding them everyday so they wouldn't get bored and go away, but my nephew didn't have any interest in them... that is, not until I let him look at this book.

As I said, I did not really get to look at this book, but let's base my 5 star review on the enthusiasm it sparked in him. He says it is a great book because the information within is very interesting and very in-depth. He also loves the plentiful beautiful pictures which helps keep him attracted all the more to the subject matter.

I am very pleased that a child growing up in today's sterile electronically-obsessed society can still find something very natural and positive to invest his time and interest in. Aren't you?

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT ADDITION TO YOUR BIRD LIBRARY.......2006-06-29

This one is just filled with excellent ideas. After years of birding you would think there would be no new ideas...wrong! I picked up quite a lot from this book. It is well organized, easy to use and easy to read and understand. I am glad I received it as a gift and recommend you get a copy if this is where your interests are. Overall, recommend this one highly.

3 out of 5 stars Great Book cheaply made.......2005-12-18

The information contained in the book is great, one of the best bird books I own. To bad the publisher went the cheap way and produced a book using the hot glue binding process as opposed to a stitched binding. My copy has fallen apart!

1 out of 5 stars Not well organized.......2005-12-07

I found this book to be very confusing. It is organized alphabetically... which makes no sense. There is no way to know what you need to know until you know what you need to know. It should be called the Bird book encyclopedia. A much much better book is the Audobon Backyard Birdwatcher. This book is not very colorful or engaging. I returned it.

5 out of 5 stars Full of information.......2005-09-14

This book has answered so many questions for me. Reading this book is like talking with a friend who knows everything about birds and wants me to know it all too! The way it is set up alphabetically makes for an easy search and the pictures and diagrams are excellent. I will now have a more organized yard and happier birds.

5 out of 5 stars Definately a must for bird lovers........2007-08-25

This book taught me a lot about bird nutrition. I own three different parrots with three different nutritional needs and this book described each and helped me pick those recipes that will take care of them. I learned which fruits and veggies have the proper vitamins needed for each.

I have tried several recipes at the time of this review and they did not fail to please at least one of my birds. I plan on trying many more and then I plan on foing back and altering some of the others to please the tastes of my clan.

This book is a must if you want your bird to have a great and healthy life.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for all bird owners!.......2007-07-05

We raise and sell parrots and every baby goes home with this book. I think it is a wonderful book and very educational with lots of great recipes. I have had the opportunity to meet Robin and she is a great lady that has done a wonderful thing with this book! Thanks Robin!!! From the birdies at Jolley Feathers.

5 out of 5 stars My birdy thanks you.......2007-05-15

My Senegal has enjoyed the foods made from this book. I feel I'm finally giving him the nutrition he needs to stay healthy.
We've been having problems with feather picking and when we ruled out exercise, toys, humidity and attention deficits one of the last things we could attribute it to was diet. Since I've started to make him varied foods from this book I've noticed a distinct change in his attitude and energy level...he just seems happier. Guess I would be too if I didn't have to eat the same thing everyday.

Anyway, thanks to the author for thinking these recipes up.

I thought this was going to be a good recipe book but it is actually one of the best recipe books I have ever owned. It is a must have for anyone that owns birds and would like to provide them with a healthy varied diet.
I am extremely happy with this book. I highly recommend it.

This is by far the best book for children and families on attracting birds to your yard. Chock-full of information that is presented in an appealing manner, this book covers a wide range of material to help children and families get started with backyard bird watching. Some of the more unique sections are a directory of plants providing food for birds, a table showing the types of seeds and food eaten by various bird species. There are lots of good color photos, and a variety of projects for children.

5 out of 5 stars -Mourning Doves mate for life-.......2002-03-28

This is one of those books that you pick up intending to find a quick answer to a specific question and, before you know what's happened, you've become wrapped up in reading several pages. The book is beautifully done, useful, and very pleasant to read.

The first section provides general information about feeding, housing and gardening for the birds. In the second section, we learn about courtship, baby birds, territory, and migration. The third section gives specific data on individual bird species, and finally, a small appendix provides lists of favorite foods, egg identification, and habitat requirements.

Here are a few bird facts that I thought were particularly interesting: Mourning Doves mate for life and are excellent parents. - The Kildeer is very unusual because they often make their nests on unpaved driveways which is confusing because the eggs look like small pieces of gravel. - The beautiful Indigo Bunting frequently uses the same nest by just making yearly repairs. - One very unpopular bird is the Brown-Headed Cowbird. They like to lay their eggs in the nests of other birds and leave all of the work and rearing to another mother. - The Winter Wren builds several nests which he shows to a possible mate for approval. The female then picks her favorite nest. Unwilling to let the other nests go to waste, he shows the remaining nests to a second female and ends up with two families.

If you enjoy feeding the birds, you'll love this book.

4 out of 5 stars Makes Bringing Birds to YOU Easy.......2000-08-10

This book is a great guide to backyard birding. It's 320 pages long and the last 100 or so pages is an extensive identification chapter featuring full color drawings of each bird, a description of its range and a lengthy description of its eating habits, courtship, housing and habitat preferences. The Appendix is one of the most useful parts of the book - it includes charts listing each bird's egg color and size, housing each bird will accept, migration patterns and food preferences for the birds. This book ensures you will get the birds you want, when you want - it even tells which birds may interbreed and how to avoid quarreling among feisty songbirds. It includes low-budget solutions to most of the "high-cost" bird expenses, and explains in great detail the proper storage of food. This book is undoubtedly the best resource birders have for attracting yard birds. Although the females in each species could be shown in better detail - only in the cases in which the sexes are drastically different are the females shown, - it is still an excellent resource from experienced "backyard birders". If you plan on attracting, feeding and nesting birds, get this book. Your success is assured.

4 out of 5 stars Backyard Bird-Lover's Guide.......2000-05-05

Fun and exciting - this book will show you the 3 essentials your yard needs to become a favorite with as wide a variety of birds that is possible for your area. I especially liked it's format, simple and easy to follow, it takes you through planning/planting, feeding stations, the best food for each bird - and you're ready to sit back and enjoy your backyard habitat! An updated replacement for my old standby book, The Backyard Bird Watcher by George Harrison.

4 out of 5 stars Useful guide...........2003-10-26

Oh what is a parrot owner to do? One book says holly berries are unsafe while another says they are not. While I am not about to feed my parrots Ilex in any form, I have noted that the Mockingbirds and others fight over the holly berries out back, and the pokeberry bushes across the street are stripped clean (and their offspring come up in my yard). Petra Burgmann subscribes to idea that holly plants are unsafe and that birds will eat unsafe things. (How do they survive in the wild?).

I've lived with companion birds for about nine months, and thankfully not killed any of them in spite of the fact Burgman and other authors I've read offer conflicting advice. I guess the rule of thumb is if in doubt, don't do it. I thought I was doing a pretty good job of balancing the nutritional needs of my birds, but on reading Burgmann's book I find there is more I can do. The baby Senegal and Lutino Cockatiel parrots who live with me seem to be more willing to try a variety of foods than do the pair of five-year old Cockatiels I obtained from the shelter last January who are interested in little other than seed. (Burgmann has much to say about seed!)

Following Burgman's advice, I am persisting in morning and afternoon offerings of non-seed items to the reluctant duo. This morning, the female "shelter" Cockatiel (Keena) actually dragged a piece of broccoli from her food dish and pecked at it a few times. This is progress as she generally shuns anything that smacks of plant life with the exception of Cilantro. According to Burgman, she and the other parrots need to eat broccoli or something with Vitamin A on a regular basis.

Burgman points out that birds do not have a very well developed sense of smell, so yesterday I tried a Jalapeño pepper with Bertie the Senegal, and he attacked it madly. Of course the dog was shocked when he tossed the leftovers on the floor for her. This morning, the crew had Pomegranate seeds in honor of Persephone who disappears at this time of the year. Burgmann says birds like texture in their food, so the Pomegranate seeds are a good bet though she does not list them as a nutritious item in her food list. (At least they don't appear on the toxic list!)

Burgman's book includes a somewhat technical discussion of nutrition and bird physiology, but she writes in a clear and concise style that makes it relatively painless to read. I took the book to work and read it while I ate my own lunch. She explains bird food processing relative to human food processing so I could imagine what was happening to my lunch. I had no idea the liver performed so many critical tasks.

Although she provides a good bit of text about bird droppings, I found no pictures. A recent article in BIRD TALK demonstrated droppings can indicated problems. Keena's droppings are colored green (and not from the food she ate), which may indicate fatty liver disease...what birds get if they eat only seed. Uh oh, she just pecked at the broccoli.

Need some creative ideas to get your psittacines on a healthy diet? This book will give you the information to help you plan a more beneficial diet for your feathered loved ones.

I would have liked to have gotten more information on presentation; as we know, food is not just sustenance for parrots, it's entertainment as well. Still, this book was invaluable in understanding the intricacies of developing meals which optimize nutritional value.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT! For General and Concise, Quick Reference........2000-05-11

This book is great for learning about nutrition, as well as a quick reference. Whether learning about avian nutrition in general or just needing to apply particular supplementation to the avian diet; it's appropriate in every sense. Moreover this book reflects on Human nutrition too.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST have book!.......2000-03-06

A MUST for those unsure of the best avian diet, or those with finicky eaters. The section on quantity of vitamins etc per item of food was invaluable in creating a balanced diet for my birds, although I did have to look on the Internet for the ideal quantities for a companion bird. Even better, it has a whole section on how to transfer your bird to a new diet without stress. It's so good I carry it around in my handbag for reference!

George is the irrepressibly curious chimp who has delighted children for more than 50 years with his inadvertent antics. Young readers know better than to trust George on his own, but somehow the man with the yellow hat never seems to learn. Although George's intentions are always good, trouble follows this affable ape like a mischievous little shadow. This time the misadventures take place at the zoo, where George and his friend have gone to see the new rain forest exhibit. Despite the "Do not feed the animals" signs, generous George wants to share his peanuts with the cute koalas; the poor, ravenous alligators; and the friendly giraffes. Pandemonium ensues, but George manages to turn things around--and even save the day!

Although there's something ever so slightly odd about Curious George visiting a zoo, neither he nor the other visitors seem to be bothered by the incongruity, so why should we? Based on the original Curious George character, and written and illustrated in the style of George's creators, this new episode in everybody's favorite impish chimp's life will delight one and all. Featuring the art of Vipah Interactive, the animators of Curious George CD-ROMs, this book will impress even the hardcore traditionalist. Curious about George's other escapades? Try The Complete Adventures of Curious George. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

When a cuddly koala takes an interest in George's snack at the zoo, George is happy to share. In fact, George is happy to share with ALL the animals! The adventures of Curious George continue in an all-new series beginning in fall 1998 with eight new stories. Written and illustrated in the style of Margret and H. A. Rey, the books will appear in paperback (8 x 8") and hardcover editions and will feature the art of Vipah Interactive, the animators of HMI's Curious George CD-ROMs.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best in the Curious George series........1999-08-22

In this story George and his friend visit the zoo to see a new exhibit. George witnesses a zoo keeper feeding the seals and decides it would be fun to share his snack with the other animals. Because George can't read the signs by the animal cages he doesn't know that you should not feed the animals. After giving the zoo keepers a merry chase he is caught and told that feeding the animals things they shouldn't eat can make them sick. George feels bad and makes up for it by helping the zoo keepers with the new exhibit. Excellent story and introduces a number of different animals for children to identify.

5 out of 5 stars hand feeding birds revealed.......2006-12-15

This is a necessary book if you desire to handfeed wild birds. It is extremely hard to find this book, anywhere.Inside is a step by step guide to handfeeding your backyard birds,it is very useful and in a way, somewhat easy to do by following this book. This was one of the books I have looked most forward too in a long time, and I'm glad I now have it.If handfeeding your wild backyard birds is one of your things to do, I highly recommend this book as almost a necessity.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and practical.......2004-11-17

I recently ordered this book and was inspired to try it for myself. I enjoyed the photography and the author's anecdotes about his own experiences feeding birds. The book offers practical information and put together with a little patience on my part, I was able to get some chickadees into my hand within 2 1/2 weeks.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful book.......2002-02-01

If you are looking for a book that will teach you how to hand-feed back yard birds and if you would enjoy poignant anecdotes about birds that have come to the author's hand to feed year after year, you will love this book!
The photographs are gorgeous, the text is clear, organized and interesting, and you can't help love the gentle, friendly, kind man who writes about his love of birds and hand-feeding them.
Another good point about this book is ...it works! I followed Hugh Wiberg's suggestions and with patience and practise, won the trust of a dear little nuthatch. He comes to my hand every time I go the park.
The book, Hand-feeding Backyard Birds, started me on this hobby and taught me how to be successful. It is a wonderful book!

5 out of 5 stars Great Present for You or your Favorite Birder!.......2001-11-12

There are some things that make you just stop and stare in amazement. Seeing someone in the middle of a park calmly hand-feeding chickadees is one of those things. Chickadees aren't tame - they fly away from feeders when you approach! And yet, ANYBODY can learn how to hand-feed these and other birds.

If you're interested, definitely grab this book. It has gorgeous photos, and simple, step-by-step instructions. It tells you when to try this for best results, how go to about it, which sorts of birds respond best, how they tend to act, what they like to eat, and much, much more.

Definitely a great gift for any birder, and once your birder (or you!) learns the technique, it'll be a present that lasts them a lifetime!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book!.......2001-08-06

This book is a lot of fun - while also being realistic. The author tells you up front that you need to be patient, because it takes time to build the trust of birds. But once they do its such a joy! Reading through the book was inspiring and then in the winter I just bundled up and got out there. It was calming while at the same time exciting as the birds came closer and closer. Bundle up though - the best time to do this with the birds is winter since they're a bit short on food and it gets chilly out there.

5 out of 5 stars good quick reference.......2006-06-27

I picked this little book up at a retail store while in the process of renewing my birding interests from years ago. Some things have changed over the years but it's mostly just new knowledge and expierience renewed from things learned over time. The book can be used as a guide also as it lists about 60 some pages of the common birds you would most likely see at the backyard feeder,it lists identification, feeding, landscaping, and breeding. The first half of the book goes into feeders, set ups for feeding, bird food, and suet, and a color coded range map that is used in the identification section of the book. There is also the necessary section on what to do about squirrels, and some commonly asked questions pertaining to commonly asked things about this pastime or hobby, whichever you prefer. There is a lot of easy to absorb information in this little book,a lot of info is packed into this little book, and if you are restarting you're interest or just starting out in this hobby, this is an excellant way to start.By the way, I got this book at Meijers, a chain store in Michigan.
