Book Description
This concise yet comprehensive text provides practical information on the common cardiovascular problems that clinicians encounter daily. Using the current American Heart Association guidelines as a framework, the book leads the clinician through the diagnostic workup and treatment/management decisions and provides cost-effective, evidence-based recommendations. The first six chapters focus on evaluation of common symptoms; subsequent chapters cover evaluation and management of common diseases. Also included are chapters on perioperative cardiovascular care. Chapters follow a consistent structure covering differential diagnosis; general considerations; clinical, laboratory, and imaging findings; and treatment/management. Numerous tables and algorithms help readers find information quickly and aid in clinical decision-making.

disappointed.......2007-03-29
The book, though could be identified & related by some children with this disorder, mentions very little about the symptoms of ADHD, minimizes the realistic aspects of having this disorder, is ambiguous about the treatment processes details. As a therapist who sometimes uses books with children in treatment, this book has not been effective as I had hoped.
My son hated it........2005-09-14
It's just not that great. Borrow it at a library and see what you think before purchasing.
Until there is a better term, it's a great book anyway.......2004-05-03
Until there is a better term for Attention Deficit, that's the name kids have to deal with. This is a great book anyway because the child uses his "problem of paying too close attention to minute details" to find his way out of the woods in order to rescue his dad. He is the hero and not a problem child as such. We learn some about his problems and some solutions but this well written story puts us in his shoes in a very understanding and kind way. This reminds me of a new book, Whoa Wiggle-worm by Betsy B. Lee. It discusses kind and unkind nicknames in an entertaining story showing a child learning self-control. A diagnosis is not given. The child might not be ADD or ADHD. The label is beside the point. I hope both books are in print for a very long time.
AD/HD from a kids point of view.......2004-04-21
I am outnumbered by ADD/HD family members & this kid sounds just like one of them! While I would prefere that doctors quite calling it a deficit, like there is something "wrong" with this personality type, I am NOT against medication. Most ADD people are VERY lovable & so smart, great problem solvers too. They have a lot going for them, but I have seen the use of drugs DRAMATICALLY improve their lives! When they can focus watch out! To see their self esteem soar because they CAN excell is a real blessing. So I'm glad the author included getting medication in the story. Some kids have diabetes & require medication, they are not looked down upon as inferior, nor should the child taking medication for ADD. Overall, it was a good story, opening up the world of ADD from a child's standpoint.
Just right.......2002-01-03
I can't believe the hardcover edition is out of print! This is one of the best books I've read to help the self-esteem of children with Add or LD or any other kind of learning problem.
It doesn't dumb down the criteria. It shows the child being the hero of the story using some of his natural abilities. It also shows some of the techniques he develops for learning. It is a wonderful story for any child with or without a disability.

In Blind Fury, Wakara is starting to come to terms with the death of her mother, but she misses her presence every day, especially when it comes to getting maternal wisdom on the topic of boys and dating. When a severe mountain snowstorm blankets Eagle Lodge with its blind fury, Wakara rides Lily into the storm to try and save some lost elk hunters.
Book Description
Both a blessing to a child and a tribute to parenthood, this superb keepsake book by renowned Chicana poet and author Ana Castillo was inspired by ancient Aztec chants. It's the ideal gift to commemorate any of various momentous events in an older child's life--such as graduation, an important birthday, a quincea-era, or a family occasion. In words and pictures, the book's two sections--one for a daughter and one for a son--trace the milestones of growing up and reflect parental joy and pride in the process. Like an illuminated manuscript in a new-world context, the illustrations by S. Guevara stylistically combine Aztec elements with strong contemporary images on bark. This wholly original creation has a multicultural appeal and a radiance that makes it a book everyone will want to give or receive.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful!.......2000-06-01
I have long been a fan of Ana Castillo's work; this venture into the world of younger readers is powerful and haunting. A wonderful addition to anyone's library.

Excellent Book.......2004-08-13
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As a professional working with children and adolescents, I think that Dr. Eagle paints a very rich landscape to better understand the emotional development of adolescent girls. This book helped me to better understand this emotional journey as well as the needs of adolescents as they grow to become young women. An unusually thoughtful and insightful book.

I was very disappointed with this book. I had read the great reviews, and it was a basic book that I didn't learn anything new that I didn't know before reading this book.

What a fabulous book!.......1999-04-21
I started this book hoping for some ideas to help me deal with my 2 stepdaughters' venture into adolescence. I love it! The authors' experience, insight into girls' feelings and actions and realistic advice on how parents can help their daughters through this difficult time in their lives are invaluable. It is a definite keeper. (I'm also making my husband read it!)
Essential reading for all parents of pre-teen girls........1998-01-05
This book is easy to read and understand. While on the one hand it made me sad to realize my 8 year old is truly poised on the threshold of a new and difficult phase of life, it gave me insight, as well as some tools to use, to make this next journey easier on both of us. It emphasized how critical the pre-teen years are in establishing a relationship that can not only survive the turbulence of the junior and senior high years, but keep the fires of self-esteem and confidence burning in the face of "growing up." Useful, relevant and comforting, this is perfect reading for parents who worry that their daughters will be anything like they were as pre-teens!

Customer Reviews:
strong survivalist tale.......2002-07-21
In San Diego, thirteen-year-old Alexis Castille-Reed attends a pool party where the alcohol flows. An accident occurs, but fortunately no one dies. However, her upset mother "banishes" Alexis for the summer to live with her father in International Falls, Minnesota.
Alexis' dad is the authority on the bald eagles. Currently, he leads a study that is banding eaglets to gain research on their natural habitat. Alexis is put to work, but though she loves the birds, she remains angry with her father for deserting her. On a nearby island, Alexis climbs up a tree to remove a fish lure from an eagle's nest. However, when she lifts an eaglet out of the nest, she drops the bird. That error is compounded when she finds herself stranded on the island protecting the injured eaglet from nasty weather and a bear.
This is a wonderful preadolescent to young teen novel that focuses on Alexis, a person in trouble. She needs closure on her younger brother's death from cancer, but at first is not able to find a way to grieve without guilt for living and without alienating her parents also mourning in their own ways. Through the eaglet rescue, Alexis attains an understanding especially of her father whom she previously loathed as well as personal comfort. Though her parents talking with one another following their estrangement feels strained, WHEN EAGLES FALL is a strong survivalist tale that the young at heart will enjoy soaring with.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful book The Eagle Kite.......2006-12-20
The Eagle Kite is a book that is about a boy who is about 10 but by the time the book is finished is a teenage. He lives with his mom and dad and is an only child. One day he learns that his dad is diagnosed with Aids. His Mom told him that his dad received the disease from a blood transfusion but Liam knows the real truth. In the book, he flashes back to the time when he witnessed his dad embracing another man, Geoff.
Liam goes through years of keeping this a secret from everyone, even his own family. He doesn't want any of his friends to know about his dad.
His dad moves away and leaves his mom and Liam to deal with many emotions. His dad's "friend" dies and Liam goes to visit his dad over Thanksgiving break.
While he is visiting Liam realizes that his dad has put a lot of effort and research into planning a trip for them to Ireland. Liam knows that his dad is getting weaker and probably will never be able to make the trip. He finally opens up to his dad and tells him he knows the truth about his disease and how he got AIDS.
His dad's sister, Mary, has never come to terms with her brother's illness and when the phone call comes that his dad is close to death, she fails to tell them.
This book deals with a family relationship that has been pulled apart by secrets, mistrust and anger.
You'll need to read the book to see if Liam makes it to the hospital before his dad dies and if his Aunt Mary ever faces up to the fact that her brother is dying from AIDS.
I liked this book because it deals with a real life situation. I would probably feel the same way as Liam does about his dad having AIDS and not want my friends to know.
I give this book a 4 star rating.
Bad Times.......2002-03-02
A Review by Jon Clegg
The story begins with a young boy named Liam. He is currently in school and is living with his mother in a small apartment near a burned down church. One day he looks out his window to notice there is a bum outside with a sign saying he needs money he's got AIDS. The story goes into his father and how he's fighting Aids.
I didn't enjoy reading this story at all and its not common for me to say that because I am very picky when it comes to books I can not enjoy almost any of the books because they aren't on a topic I enjoy. It wasn't at anyway adventurous or outgoing it was extremely boring I caught myself sleeping while reading it at many points. The main character has some pretty dumb problems that everyone has but he can't deal with them. I think it was a waste of ink and paper! The first part of the book wasn't even necessary when he meets the homeless person with aids. It didn't really blend into the story that well.
I would not recommend this book to anyone it wasn't even fun to note read I should have never picked it up off the shelve it is a big waste of everything in the world that was put into it!
A Sensitive Story Told with Feeling.......2001-07-04
Paula Fox has tackled a sensitive topic in The Eagle Kite and has handled it with much feeling and warmth. It is the story of Liam and his father who had secrets and now has AIDS. It could be their last chance to repair any damage done to their relationship. It is a short little book for teenagers but it packs quite an emotional wallop but in a sweetly subtle and quiet manner. This book will be a nice revelation for any teenager dealing with relationship issues with their parents. It is a look at dealing honestly with one's parents and one's children and building a relationship through that honesty whatever it reveals. It is a sad, touching story.
Insightful and Amzing.......2001-04-11
The only problem with this book is that it is too short.
Paula Fox manages to paint a picture of our society within the microcosm of a family that reflects the good and bad attitudes many otherwise good people have regarding gays and AIDS. Don't be put off by any warnings. The people, both young and old, who have trouble with the book reflect more of their own personal problems in dealing with the subject matter. After speaking to several middle school students who found the book at a recent book fair, I discovered that they were able to empathize with Liam, the hero of the story. The only thing they couldn't understand is why Liam's mother and aunt behaved the way they did. They could see in the adults' attempts to protect the boy that they were hurting him more than helping him.
This is a book that should be a welcome addition to any classroom library. It would even make an excellant text on which to base a series of lessons on tolerance and acceptance.
"The Eagle Kite" soars.
Th Eagle Kite Is A True Work Of Beauty.......2000-03-13
When I first heard of this book I was sincerly interested. But when I read it- it was everything, even more than what I hoped for. It was desciptive, honest, and completly heart wrenching. Liam's father had AIDs. Liam was told it came from bad Blood Tranfusions. Liam didn't agree with this. Liam remembered the day he saw his father on the beach. He was not alone. In fact, he was embracing someone. But yet, not just any someone. Liams father was embracing a man. Liam could not forget about this. It stayed inside him, and in my opinion was eating him alive, just like AIDs was eating his father. Liam found the courage to forgive his father. That really touched me. Because, I know the exact feeling of having to have your family angry and hurt by you, but then to have them except and forgive you. The Eagle Kite was definetly a book all families should read. I also think it would be wonderful inspiration for families who are having poblems that include a gay person in the family. The ending was ironic, but I shouldn't give it away for the people who havent read it. Enjoy!
