5 out of 5 stars Got to love the Pigeon!.......2007-07-03

Totally love this book. My son gets such a kick out of the Pigeon. Great story to share with younger children!

5 out of 5 stars My second time buying this book.......2007-06-27

My daughter and I love the pigeon book collection. This one is just as entertaining as the others, but also, for younger kids, educational on "things that go". We had owned this book, but bought it again for a friend. Gotta love that pigeon!!

4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-02-15

My son really enjoys this book. He is a bit young to "get it" but he smiles when I read it to him.

2 out of 5 stars Board books are supposed to be for babies.......2007-01-12

I am a fan of the larger Pigeon books, so I bought this one for my 18 month old who loves books. This was a disappointment as the play on words at the end makes little sense to a baby. This is a waste of money. The longer books are much more enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Great books for children of all ages and grown men who love sarcasm.......2007-01-10

My children love this book. Mo Willems is a great writer of Children's books. "What?" has become my four year olds favorite word, and my husband enjoys reading "Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late" every night at bedtime. We as a family have enjoyed all of Willems children's books based on Pigeon. My two year old loves "The Pigeon Loves Things That Go" He makes the noises while I read.

Book Description

Like a lot of young people in the 1970s, Mark Bittner took the path of the “dharma bum.” When the counterculture faded, Mark held on, seeking shelter in the nooks and crannies of San Francisco’s fabled bohemian neighborhood, North Beach. While living on the eastern slope of Telegraph Hill, he made a magical discovery: a flock of wild parrots. In this unforgettable story, Bittner recounts how he became fascinated by the birds and patiently developed friendships with them that would last more than six years. When a documentary filmmaker comes along to capture the phenomenon on film, the story takes a surprising turn, and Bittner’s life truly takes flight.

“A fascinating love story with wings.” —Boston Herald

“[A] charming memoir. For devoted birders everywhere.” —Reader’s Digest, Editor’s Choice

“[An] inspirational saga of one man finding his life’s meaning in the most serendipitous way.” —San Jose Mercury News

“Instructive, surprising, sweet.” —Gary Snyder, author of Turtle Island and Mountains and Rivers Without End

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Really good book.......2007-07-20

This book was recommended to me by someone whose taste in books I questioned. However, I must say this is a well-written, fascinating book. For animals lovers, in particular, you will truly enjoy this story.

5 out of 5 stars Parrots for everyone!.......2007-07-12

What a thrill to learn about Mark Bittner's love and care of the flock of (mostly) cherryheads. I'm not even a bird person, but I was just mesmerized a couple of years ago by a story I heard on NPR about a flock of parrots. I'm still not sure it was the San Francisco flock, but imagine my surprise when I saw Mark's book on my emailed Page-A-Day calendar.

Reading the story was like being there. I learned to like Mark in spite of my reservations in the beginning; couldn't wait to watch the film.

Only a week after finishing the book, I was reading the intro to another book and the author (Jim Palmer) introduced himself as a lover of quirky films that no one else knows about, like "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill." I considered it a "God-sign."

Read this book; you'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars Love on Wings.......2007-06-27

I throughly enjoyed this true story with a happy ending.
It was written with heart and soul.
And touched mine.

5 out of 5 stars Even better than the movie.......2007-01-03

I watched the movie prior to reading the book.

I enjoyed both but in particular the book.

Mark is a very good writer, especially when you consider that he has no formal training, that I am aware of.

This is a book that you can read again a few months later and be entertained all over again.

5 out of 5 stars On the Wings of Love..........2006-12-26

They say he may have been a modern bohemian Saint Francis living in San Francisco and befriending wild parrots. Or maybe he was simply a man returning (for some time) to the original state of humankind living in harmony with the creatures. Yes, this is the story of wild parrots and a semi-wild man and how they danced, sang, ate seeds, and lived together for six years. Perched high upon a hill overlooking the San Francisco bay, the ancient story of human befriending wild beasts unfolded. The kind of tale that fascinates us today just as it would have fascinated our ancestors in ancient times. Such stories will always fascinate us humans, whenever a gentle, loving heart opens itself to the magic and mystery of creation and engages in a dance of truth with life.

Mark Bittner writes: "In 1988, I took a job as the caretaker of a house on the east side of Telegraph Hill. Two years later I spotted four parrots in the gardens outside my home. Within three years the flock had grown to twenty-six, and I was in love. I spent the next six years making friends with them and learning their ways... I watched them for several years with tremendous curiosity. What were wild parrots doing in San Francisco? Then one day a few of them flew to my fire escape, and my whole life changed..."

In 1996 Mark began writing a book about his experiences with these colorful, fascinating birds. He came to know each parrot individually and personally. Each one has its unique personality, quirks, friendships, courtships, and life pathways. Mark wrote his observations in a journal of the lives of Mingus, Connor, Picasso, Sophie, Olive, Pushkin, Tupelo, and many other parrots whom he named, fed, observed, cared for, and befriended. He also photographed the birds, with stunning results. The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill: A Love Story... With Wings is the highly acclaimed, charming, and best-selling result of Mark's six years with the birds.

Judy Irving, a filmmaker, began creating a documentary of Mark's work with the parrots in 1998. This resulted in her extraordinary documentary, also called The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill. Although the title is the same as the book, the book and film focus on somewhat different aspects of the story. The film (available on DVD) is as much a study of Mark as it is of the parrots. While working on the film, Judy and Mark fell in love. They are now married and living in the gardens of Telegraph Hill. Mark is currently working on a book about his years of living on the street prior to his encounter with the parrots. Judy continues making her high quality films on the environment.

If you read the book or watch the film, you will find that Mark's bird-friends become your friends. James D. Gilardi, Ph.D., Director of the World Parrot Trust, writes: "By falling in with a flock of wild parrots, Bittner has learned more about a real parrot society than those of us studying wild or captive parrots could ever hope to learn." But of course, the book isn't just about parrots. As one reviewer of Mark's book wrote: "By the end of his tale, you will no longer see humans as the center of the universe, if you ever did." And by the time the screen credits are rolling at the end of the film, you will find yourself transformed by this beautifully touching and compelling story.

What I loved especially about both the film and the book is experiencing how Mark himself evolves and transforms through his relationship with the parrots and eventually through his relationship with Judy. He was a lost musician, a street person, a post-beatnik, searching for truth and "right living" as taught by Buddhism. He took odd jobs, tried this and that, but never quite found his path. Until he met the parrots. And then Judy. We sense that the story is far from over, and we yearn to know more of its unfolding... I wish that Judy and Mark would write, or document in film or photographs, more about their personal lives since the publication and dissemination of their book and film. The film opens you up to the delight of these two people, and one yearns to know more. Like the parrots, Judy and Mark have become our friends through the magic of the book and film.

To experience the magic yourself, view the film or DVD, read the book, view Mark's photos, and check out Mark's and Judy's websites. You'll be glad that you did! Beautiful story, beautiful people, beautiful birds.

Yes, if you are a lover of nature, both human and animal, I highly recommend this book and the film/DVD.

Book Description

Choco wishes he had a mother, but who could she be? He sets off to find her, asking all kinds of animals, but he doesn't meet anyone who looks just like him. He doesn't even think of asking Mrs. Bear if she's his mother-but then she starts to do just the things a mommy might do. And when she brings him home, he meets her other children-a piglet, a hippo, and an alligator-and learns that families can come in all shapes and sizes and still fit together.

Keiko Kasza's twist on the "Are you my mother?" theme has become one of the most highly recommended stories about adoption for children.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!.......2007-09-08

I got this book for my daughter who was adopted.
She is almost 8 years old and still loves it.
It's a simple read but makes the point you don't have to look like your family to be a family.
Wish parents would read this to thier non-adopted children.

5 out of 5 stars A much loved classic.......2007-09-02

This book is a great way to gently introduce the concept of adoption. The book reinforces that what matters is not whether family members look alike, but how they treat and love each other. The only thing I am not crazy about is that Choco seems to start out with no caregiver at all. The illustrations are beautiful, and both my kids enjoyed this book.

Christine Mitchell, author and illustrator of Welcome Home, Forever Child: A Celebration of Children Adopted as Toddlers, Preschoolers, and Beyond

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book about adoption.......2007-08-23

This books helps adopted children understand why they look different. My three year olds request this book every night.

5 out of 5 stars Choco story.......2007-07-21

I think this is a simple and lovely story. My daughter is 4 years old and adopted from China. She liked it a lot. It gets the message across that it's love and relationships that make a family and not necessarily looks, but without being in your face about it. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars We Love This Book!.......2007-07-20

Another great book to help explain adoption, particularly transracial adoption, to very young children.

Little Choco is all alone in the world. God only knows what happened to his first mother. In any event, he's looking for a mother who looks just like him, but alas, cannot find one. Mrs. Giraffe doesn't have wings, Mrs. Penguin doesn't have plump cheeks, Mrs. Walrus doesn't have striped blue feet. He sees Mrs. Bear picking apples and he KNOWS she can't be his mother because she looks nothing like him. He starts to cry and lo and behold, Mrs. Bear mothers him. She kisses him just like a mother would, she hugs him just like a mother would, she cheers him up by singing and dancing with him, just like a mother would. Eventually, she invites him home for some apple pie. Turns out, she has some other children, a baby hippo ("hippy") and a baby alligator ("allie"). Choco decides to stay for apple pie and more, happy that his new mother looks just the way she is.

It's always hard for Baby Bird and his mama to say good-bye on their way to school and work in the morning. But Mama finds a lilting, lyrical way of showing how her love is with her child all the time--and his love is with her, too.
But even when I'm far away,
this love I have will stay.
and wrap itself around you
every minute of the day.
Warm, reassuring feelings emanate from this lovely picture book. Mama Bird tells her child how her love slips inside his lunch box, sits upon his shoulder when he sings a happy song, and snuggles on his pillow while he naps. Jane Dyer, illustrator of the bestselling Time for Bed, creates positively touchable watercolors of a pudgy-cheeked preschooler bird and his working mom. Hints of hearts nestle playfully on the pages: on the blackboard under the letter H, and sewn onto his pillowcase. Oh My Baby, Little One will resonate deeply for moms and kids alike, and may make daily separations just a little bit easier.
So blow a kiss and wave good-bye--
my baby, don't you cry.
This love is always with you,
like the sun is with the sky.
(Ages 3 to 6) --Emilie Coulter

5 out of 5 stars You miss me, and I miss you, and I must leave you for awhile........2007-08-10

Mama bird explains to baby bird, who misses her, how her love is with him throughout the day while she is at work. She tells him that she also misses him and finds his love with her. She also tells him that her greatest joy is when she comes home to him.

This is a good book for a working mother to read to her child (starting as young as possible) to reassure him/her and open up a conversation about the topic whenever needed. The pictures look just like my grandson when I babysit and he misses mommy.

Gift Of The Tortoise: A Musical Journey Through Southern Africa by Ladysmith Black Mambazo includes a song that the children sing when their mothers return from trading in the city (which may take days). It also has a song by a girl when she receives a gift from her father who works at a distance from the family and only sees them a few weeks a year.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful message!.......2007-07-12

I bought this book for myself when my first child was still a baby. It helped me with the drop off at preschool when she was a baby to know that our love was with each other when we were apart! I bought them this year when my sister-in-laws had their first baby girls and were headed back to work and they found them just as moving and sweet. What a great gift for any mom at any stage!

5 out of 5 stars Childrens Books.......2007-05-13

This is one of the most beautiful and tender stories I've ever read about a working momy and the seperation she and her baby son must go through every day when she goes off to work and he goes to school. It helped me and my son a lot knowing that other families go through a similar process of separation anxiety. It also has beautiful pictures and eases the insecurities most little children go through when the aren't with their parents, I really recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Illustrations.......2006-02-28

Large, soft, colorful illustrations attracted me to this book that I found at a book fair several years ago. I purchased this book for my "when I have children" book collection, and now that I have a son to read it to, it is a favorite for both of us. The story is a sweet rhyme and not too "wordy" for my toddler who does not sit still for very long. The illustrations are so pleasing to me, that I just completed a search for other books illustrated by Jane Dyer, and am excited by my new finds.

5 out of 5 stars Finally I have made it through without tears..........2005-03-18

Stumbled across this in the library, (always scope out the books there first, in order to make sure "we" like them), the first oh, ten times, I read the book to my daughter I couldn't get through it without almost bawling. (And I only leave her twice a week, with her Grandma or Aunt). I don't think she understood (at 10 months) what was a matter with Mom. Now that I own it and have read it about 30 times, I can get through without tears and she really enjoys the story. It is told in a lovely rhyme, with beautiful illustrations.

If you are a working mom, or sending your child off to school, I highly recommend this book.

The literature of bird watching is full of memoirs set in out-of-the-way, rural locales, but few are set in the heart of big cities such as New York, where Wall Street Journal ornithology columnist Marie Winn hangs her hat. In this delightful account, Winn tells of birding in Central Park with an unlikely band of fellow enthusiasts (including Mary Tyler Moore and Woody Allen). Among her objects of study were a pair of increasingly uncommon wood thrushes who set up their nest in the park's Ramble, treating city dwellers to their "penetrating, flutelike, heart-stoppingly beautiful song: Ee-oh-lee, ee-oh-loo-ee-lee, ee-lay-loo," and a pair of red-tail hawks who courted, mated, and produced offspring, thus quickening the spirits of Manhattanites. Both urbanites and those inclined to country matters will enjoy Winn's gracefully written story of observation and discovery.

Book Description

Marie Winn is our guide into a secret world, a true wilderness in the heart of a city. The scene is New York's Central Park, but the rich natural history that emerges here--the loons, raccoons, woodpeckers, owls, and hundreds of visiting songbirds--will appeal to wildlife lovers everywhere. At its heart is the saga of the Fifth Avenue hawks, which begins as a love story and develops into a full-fledged mystery.

At the outset of our journey we meet the Regulars, a small band of nature lovers who devote themselves to the park and its wildlife. As they watch Pale Male, a remarkable young red-tailed hawk, woo and win his first mate, they are soon transformed into addicted hawk-watchers. From a bench at the park's model-boat pond they observe the hawks building a nest in an astonishing spot--a high ledge of a Fifth Avenue building three floors above Mary Tyler Moore's apartment and across the street from Woody Allen's.

The drama of the Fifth Avenue hawks--hunting, courting, mating, and striving against great odds to raise a family in their unprecedented nest site--is alternately hilarious and heartbreaking. Red-Tails in Love will delight and inspire readers for years to come.

I live in Portland Oregon, and have large populations of birds in my back yard, so this was a fun read. Perhaps i will visit NYC someday, and i will bring my glasses! What a nice book!

5 out of 5 stars Birding in central Park.......2007-01-06

Although the star of this book is Pale Male, there are also wonderful stories of encounters with other birds. Marie Winn is a good writer and this is a very entertaining book for anyone interested in Pale Male or birding in Central Park.

3 out of 5 stars SHOULD BE RE-NAMED.......2006-11-10

I was hoping for a more in depth article on Pale Male. This book had a more general theme to it pertaining to all the birds/wildlife in the park. It was okay, I am glad I didn't buy it, a friend let me read hers. I absolutely love, and purchased after watching it, Pale Male, the video produced by Nature, narrated by Joane Woodward.

5 out of 5 stars Repeated Enjoyment.......2005-11-10

Every year goes by and this simple tale becomes more treasured and heartwarming. I have given dozens of copies of this book to friends, birders and non interested alike. Everyone is grateful for the inspiration that this unusual piece of nature brings.

We watch eagles return to a nest along a stretch of the Llano River that falls in line with a highly traveled highway and the human reaction is just the same as the thousands of New Yorkers. Scores and scores of strangers with craned necks and binoculars in raised and ready position, standing in the back of their truck beds only to get a little closer to the marvel of the eagles on the the back side of our very own ranch and river.

From fall to spring each year my weekend exploration includes a trip to see the eagles and I am always thinking through whom else I could share Red Tails In Love with...it is not hard.

5 out of 5 stars Purchased this book in protest against Pale Male's eviction.......2004-12-16

As a New Yorker, I hadn't really paid much attention to Pale Male before this unfortunate state of affairs. There was something shockingly callous and arrogant in the way the board of 927 Fifth Avenue destroyed this magnificent bird's home. I hope the hawks will eventually get their nest back.

I would like to find out more about this star's history and family. My whole family is now crazy about him and Lola.

Hail Pale Male!

5 out of 5 stars A hit!.......2007-09-23

This series is wonderful! Our two-year-old absolutely loves the Baby Loves Jazz series. We bought a few to start out, then ended up buying the whole set. Two months after acquiring them, she is still enamored and requests to listen to them and read them every day. Her favorites? Well, these are the words we hear most often: "Mommy, read Duck and Miles?" or "Daddy, listen to Duck and Miles?" Philly Joe is also high on the list. I recommend them all. The books stand out on their own, but the music is what makes this series really shine. For example, on Duck Ellington's CD, he does a great Monk style on one track, then switches to great impression of Coltrane's classic quartet on the next track, with a very nice McCoy Tyner impression. Lots of variety and high quality make this series worthwhile (though I could have done without Louis Lion's potty tune). Don't forget the Go Baby Go CD as well (a stand-alone CD without a book), which is perhaps a notch above the music on the book CDs. The ABC tune is her favorite on that one.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent books!.......2007-04-06

My husband and I absolutely love this series. It was made with adults in mind. It's not too kidish. We have the Miles the Crocodile, Charlie Bird, Ella Elephant, & Duck Ellington so far. We also have the Baby Loves Jazz CD (go baby go). It's great too. My 1 year old loves them all. We've been listening to them since he was about 8 months old. He listens to them every morning and night before bedtime. He's even started dancing to them. Now that he's a little older. He brings me the books and we read the little stories. I also dubbed these for my nieces who are 3 & 6. They really like them too. You can't go wrong with these books that come with the cd's. They are an excellent teaching tool as well as entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining!.......2007-01-06

I had originally bought this and the Ella the Elephant for my almost 2 year old. It turns out that my almost 4 year old loves the accompanying CD and "reading" along with the book just as much. My husband and I are jazz lovers, and after seeing Baby Loves Jazz at the Monterey Jazz Festival 2006, knew this was an awsome way to introduce our sons to this wonderful music.

    5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2002-07-25

My high school did Love of the Nightingale my freshman year, and it's the most amazing play. I read it the first time and liked it, but when I read it again the play struck me as brilliant because I got lots of foreshadowing. Several years before they did Our Country's good, but I was littile (I went to see my sister), so I don't remember it. Amazing playwright alert here, people!

    5 out of 5 stars Love of a nightingale.......2002-01-05

I also have never read this book but my college is staging love of a nightingale i think that timberlake wertenbaker writes with such poise this book cant be missed.
The play love of a nightingale is in a greek style but the plot is so intriging that anyone who previously thought greek tragedies boring will be proved wrong this one keeps you reading. i should know as a college production being forced to pick a greek play we werent pleased we must have got the best one possible brilliant to stage brilliant to read this book is a must if u are considering staging a greek production dont send ur audience to sleep liven them up with philomele's urging desire to know about sex and when she wishes she didnt. If the rest of this book is as good as love of a nightingale its worth it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest playwrights, not to mention female........1998-06-18

This book of plays is one of the best and most interesting I have read. Wertenbaker tackles many subjects including female cross-dressing, female sexuality, and the plight of the criminal first sent to Australia. Very different topics and all well written.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2006-03-17

A refreshing treatise on letting God orchestrate circumstances affecting us. Although a senior who has read Christian books for decades, I found author Whitson in Red Bird uniqueing offering her readers valid outlooks on dealing with the unexpected, especially those things that we would not choose, but that refine our relationship with our Lord, if we choose to let them. My faith has actually increased through access to this book, among the best I've ever read...a book that I stumbled across in our local library. Now Mrs. Whitson ranks among my favorite authors. Her books will be added to my personal home library.

    5 out of 5 stars Must Have.......2006-02-15

Every book in this series is a must have and a keeper. You will
be moved to your very soul. I love the fact that a white women
and an Indian man with their love brought together such a
wonderful legacy. Don't miss a one.

5 out of 5 stars Whitson Saves the Best for Last!.......2001-03-06

If it were possible to give this one more than 5 stars, I would. This author actually gets BETTER with each sequel! Carrie Brown, affectionately called "Red Bird" by her old friend Soaring Eagle (that was the second book in the series -- read that one first, or "Red Bird" will lose you), has dreamed for years of marrying Soaring Eagle when she grows up. But is that GOD'S plan for her life? The reader asks that question over and over, as Carrie tries desperately to "maneuver herself" in a position to marry Soaring Eagle, all the while praying that he remains single until she's old enough. But what should she REALLY be praying for?

This one is truly the best in the series.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read! Gets Better With Every Book!.......2000-05-30

Number 3 in this series is the best yet... and I thought the other 2 were great! Don't read the end first, but it touches the soul. I have read it over and over. Godlyness (if there is such a word?) makes the romance even better than expected. Must Read!

5 out of 5 stars A deep, exciting conclusion to the series!.......2000-04-17

Little Carrie Brown is a young lady with plans of her own. Soaring Eagle is an educated, dedicated Christian Indian man without a wife. Life is hard, smallpox wipes out a town and a dream. In the end, many memories are revisited! This series is superb! Stephanie, you did a great job! Is there more coming?
