Book Description
The natural world is a magical maze in the eyes of a child—everything appears bigger and more colorful, and nothing is ordinary. With this in mind, Chicago artist and photographer Robert Amft designed an alphabet book for his son Peter. The result, beautifully published here, is a wholly unique children’s book chronicling Peter’s encounters with the everyday environment.
Originally conceived in the 1940s as a piece of art that could be published and sold by Amft’s wife if he was killed fighting in World War II, Amft invested the book as much with artistic skill and imagination as with love for his son. Amft’s arresting collages uniquely convey the complex and unpredictable ways that Peter, like so many young children, interacts with his surroundings. Alternately charming, unexpected, and mysterious, the images juxtapose and meld the natural and unnatural.
A richly illustrated book holding as many treasures for the attentive adult as for the inquisitive child, Peter’s ABC Book is a rare gift from a pivotal figure in American art.

Peter's Alphabet.......2007-03-31
This book is a little treasure. It has the art work of a rather reknowned artist while integrating the art into the alphabet. The ideas are so clever -- not the usual A is for Apple. This book is something that should be in every child's library.
More than an ABC Book.......2007-01-15
What a unique alphabet book! The diversity of the creatures that Peter meets in what appears to be one day is amazing, and so well illustrated. A precursor to Photoshop.

Quick . . . can you think of a bird whose name begins with X? Jerry Pallotta found one, and also birds for Q and Z and all the other letters of the alphabet.Fill of facts and fun, this book is sure to intrigue children with its array of feathered friends, from the familiar to the exotic.
Customer Reviews:
We love Jerry Pallotta Alphabet books!.......2007-03-21
My son and I absolutely love Jerry Pallotta's Alphabet books. My son is only two-years-old, and I don't think he probably understands half of what I'm reading (and sometimes I'm not even sure if I'm pronouncing the animal, machine, etc. correctly), but he still can't get enough of these books. We own all of them and could never say which is our favorite. I have learned a lot from the books, and my son picks up something new every time we read them.
A is not for Apple anymore!.......2006-03-15
Jerry Pallotta books are an exciting and unique way to learn the alphabet. No more A is for Apple Z is for Zebra! Details are perfect for my 4 year old to understand and remember. We've read as many Jerry Pallotta books as I an find.
Beautiful Illustrations but for which age?.......2001-02-07
This is a wonderful book for its concept and illustrations. If it's meant to help teach the alphabet to young children (which I believe it was judging from the picture of the toddler on the last page), then some of the bird choices for letters are too complex. Examples: A is for Atlantic Puffin, N is for Northern Cardinal, W is for White-Faced Scops Owl. This is an ambitious attempt to be precise, but it is does not match the cognitive and linguistic stage of a very young child. Still, it's a nice book, especially if you want to inspire a child's curiosity about birds.
Awesome book for all ages.......1999-11-29
This was a great book. My 2 year old loves it. It is one of her most favorite books. We get it out of the library often and now I must buy it because she doesn't like taking it back.
I learned that Kiwi birds & penguins can not fly........1997-11-22
I liked about the story is when I got to j.The Jacana birds have tall feet- Brianne Wade. I like the story because the Atlantic Puffins have colorful beaks -Raven Smalls.

Book Description
Albert the school carpenter has been assigned a task that seems virtually impossible! He has to build an alphabet for the walking path on the school playground. All twenty-six letters! And by three o'clock! How is he ever going to finish on time? Does he even have enough materials?
Luckily, Albert is one clever carpenter. He not only finishes on time, he builds what could be the most ingenious alphabet ever!
Customer Reviews:
My children's favorite book.......2007-01-10
This was my children's favorite book when they were young. It's actually better because it's a story told in pictures - the reader/parent has to add the narrative. It gets both reader and child engaged in how school custodian/carpenter Albert is going to come up with a way to build the next letter of the alphabet. When my kids outgrew it I started giving it as a baby gift.
ABC.......2000-10-19
What a wonderful way to discover and learn the alphabet. This book is an excellent springboard for children to create their own alphabet book. Think of making the alphabet out of toothpicks and make a scene behind. Have fun building!
Book Description
Twenty-nine species of birds, each accompanying a different letter of the alphabet, appear in an appropriate setting. Bluebirds frame the letter "B," an ibis stands as high as the letter "I," and an "S" curves around the bodies of three mute swans. Identifying captions included.
Book Description
ELMO TRIES TO decide what his favorite letter of the alphabet might be. There are so many letters - so much to love! He takes readers on a tour of the ABCs, naming the things he loves that begin with each letter, and decides that they're all special in their own way.
Customer Reviews:
... and B is for Boring!.......2005-05-25
I am usually a big fan of books for children, and I bought this for my 2-year-old son because he is crazy about Elmo and is learning the alphabet. While the drawings in this book are cute (expect nothing less from Elmo!), the text is completely inane. I dread reading this book to my son because it is mind-numbingly dull and poorly written.
Elmo is searching for his favorite letter. Fine. It's cute that E is for Elmo and M is for Monster -- those things are directly relevant to Elmo and his little life. But then the book tosses in random items ("T is for turtles and turtles are terrific!") that just come out of nowhere and are not at all related to Sesame Street -- they just don't fit, and it makes it sound as if this book was thrown together. Basically, I think the problem is that there's no real overarching "theme" to the book (other than the fact that Elmo appears on every page) to make it hang together. Example: "Elmo can make lots of noisey noise. Wheeee! And so can an octopus!" (Used to illustrate N and O) It's just... well, boring, and it all seems forced.
I'm still searching for a good alphabet book that can help my son easily recognize letters and sounds. This one is definitely not it.
The Best Alphabet Book.......2001-08-05
This is one of my daughter's favorite books and it also the best ABC book that I've come across. Elmo tries to decide what his favorite letter is, from "D" is for dogs, "I" for imagination, and "Z" for Zoe. Each page has the letter highlighted and a reason why Elmo likes the letter. This books has a good pace and pleasing pictures. It's a great addition for anyone trying to teach the alphabet in a fun and exciting way.

Penguins ABC's.......2006-07-03
This is a wonderful book! I bought it so our 2 year old daughter could learn ABC's as well as something about Penguins. She loves the colorful pictures and runs around repeating the words now in addition to the letters.
Penguins! The ABC's. Need I say more?.......2005-10-03
Board Books are a gift from God; they're indestructable. All the kids I watch just love penguins. The photos are great; a great companion to "Penguins 1 2 3."
My toddler loves this book!.......2005-06-04
Madeline loves this book so much, I have it memorized! We have to read it every day and have specific actions we do for each letter. With "N for Nuzzle," we have to hug, we waddle for W, &c. It's a really fun book and a great introduction to the alphabet and different kinds of penguins.
A-is for Antartica........2003-11-18
This delightful book is filled with pictures of penguins. Not only that, but it uses the pictures to help teach children the alphabet with Penguin names and words associated with the life of a Penguin. For instance, E is for Emperor and F is for Family. The last two pages of the book contain descriptions of what each word means and how it relates to a penguin's life. The pictures are vivid and full of wonder. I picked this book up because I love penguins and would recommend it to any penguin lover. However, I also highly recommend it as a good alphabet book for younger children.

Ireverent humour of the best kind.......2006-11-10
Whilst this book is certainly not strictly educational, as a parent who has read thousands of books to my children I laughed and laughed. And so did they!
Highly recommended for those with a sense of humour.
not for us.......2006-09-12
i bought this for the sweet 16 month old i babysit, thinking educationally. i'm just not ready to teach him that "f" is for "ffftt" (fart), "s" is for splat, when the bird poops, and "x" is when the bird dies.
Giggles like you wouldn't believe!.......2005-10-22
Have to say this was 'the funniest book ever!' according to my 4-1/2 yr old daughter. Just read it to her tonight for the 1st time, and the genuine giggles just kept flowing page after page. Silly silly silly book that kept her laughing for an hour until she finally fell asleep. I'm now searching for more books by this author at my daughter's request!

Midwestern Alphabet Book Collector Loves the Atlantic Ocean.......2005-02-19
I am an alphabet book collector who grew up in the midwest. But, twenty years ago I went on a tall mast ship cruise off the cost of Maine and fell in love with the eastern seaboard. This alphabet book captures the joy, pensiveness, intrigue, beauty, and attraction of the Atlantic Ocean and its "adventures." As Papa Gull said to his young offspring, "The Atlantic is mother to us all. . . . Appreciate who you are." And so begins a lyric tale about a gull family and its journey along a seaboard and through the alphabet.
As alphabet books go, this one is 3 standard deviations above the mean. It tells a story. It develops sophisticated vocabulary (with a glossary, I might add). And, it captures the joyful journeys of any family. In this case, it was gulls.
I might quibble with the letter "n" and its illustration of only Caucasian children. All children might love gulls and the shoreline. But, for the joy of a trek and story along the shore, this one is hard to beat.
Share it with your children, regardless of where you live.
Caryn and daughters Matty & Julia Recommend "A Gull's Story".......2003-02-09
Being a lifelong resident of the Jersey Shore, I couldnýt resist buying ýThe Gullýs Storyý for my two daughters, ages 4 and 7. My little one spotted this book first because of the beautiful illustrations of the various birds and animals, but I have to admit, I was curious myself as to how this book would read and represent the shore area to others. We loved it so much, I was forced to buy another so each of my daughters could keep one for their own. For anyone who hasnýt read this book with their children, its a beautifully written book about the life of a seagull and his creature friends who live on the Jersey Shore .. perfect book to read before bedtime. Another book we recommend (also illustrated by Margie Moore) is ýThe Little Brown Bear ý Count the Ways,ý a favorite especially for my 4 year old since she is still learning her numbers and letters. You will believe the animals in these stories are real by the way Ms. Moore brings out each of their little personalities. I believe this illustrator is a genius in her field of art and her talent of depicting the lives of the creatures in each story told. ýThe Gull Storyý is a ýmust haveý book for any child whether you live on the shore or not.

Customer Reviews:
Grover uses his body to teach the alphabet.......2006-10-16
This is a really cute book for young fans of Sesame Street. "Loveable, furry old Grover" uses his body and props to illustrate each letter of the alphabet. For example, he uses the reflection of himself in a mirror to create the letter M. He also uses words beginning with each letter in the text, e.g., for the letter A he uses four apples and says, "This is a little awkward, but is it not an absolutely adorable A?" It's a fun and creative book. I can imagine children tyring to use their own bodies to form the letters after reading this book. Excellent.
Great Fun for Grover-Heads.......2005-12-01
Great book! Especially fun for kids who are just getting the hang of the letters of the alphabet. And so nice to see Grover making a comeback. I for one have been saddened by the recent dominance of Elmo and the near disappearance of Grover. I don't know whether Rosie O'Donnell's histrionic shilling of Tickle-Me-Elmo was causitive or just another symptom of the craze, but I am not an Elmo-head. Elmo is too positive, too cute, too precious. When I watch Elmo doing his thing, I am forced to hold on to all my negativity and anxiety, it is very stressful. But Grover, he is much more human to me, even though I recognize they are technically both monsters. Grover struggles, he fails, he gets scared. I watch Grover and I can displace a wide range of emotions on him, it's far more freeing. And I never would have described Grover's voice as soothing before Elmo took over, Grover sounds like he could really use a mucolytic, but at least it is in a register that is not piercing.
So I highly endorse this book, not just from a pro-Grover stance but it also gives plenty of fodder for active reading with your children. You can focus on Grover trying to contort his body into all the letters and his eventually collapse into exhaustion, you can focus on the unnamed pictures on each page that start with the letter in question, or you can try and find how many words on each page start with the same letter.
A fantastic, lovable and furry alphabet book.......2001-07-02
Being a long-time Grover fan, I had high hopes for "Grover's Own Alphabet" (which I ordered shortly after my son was born). Thankfully, I got what I wished for -- and then some! The folks behind this kid-sized book have captured Grover's whimsical nature in both the text and the illustration. He huffs and puffs and contorts his furry old body into letter after letter, using props from the ordinairy to the unusual to make his starting-letter points clear. Grover is drawn as the fuzzy creature he is (with none of the smoothed out edges that some illustrators give him), and his heart is as big as his body is flexible. I give this book the highest grade possible: "G" for (what else?) Grover!
