Book Description

Over the past century, America's Eagle Scouts have earned a reputation for service, virtue, and leadership that is recognized throughout the world. But few people realize the full extent to which Eagle Scouts have made a mark on American history. They have served as astronauts, soldiers, politicians, and businessmen, but they have also been the fathers, brothers, Scoutmasters, coaches, and other role models who have played an integral part in American life.

Alvin Townley set out across the country to hear the stories of these Eagle Scouts. He spoke with individuals from every region, of every age and every background, some of whom have risen to fame as public figures while others have left a lasting impact outside of the spotlight.

The Eagle Scouts who share their experiences include Bill Gates, Sr., Bill Bradley, J. W. Marriott, Jr., Ross Perot, Michael Bloomberg, Richard Lugar, Michael Dukakis, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson, coach Chan Gailey, and Capt. Jim Lovell of Apollo 13. The book also explores the virtues of a Tuskegee Airman, a Vietnam War POW, a September 11 NYPD hero, a crew of Hurricane Katrina relief workers, and a host of others from every walk of life.

During his journey, Alvin discovered stories of character, courage, and inspiration that belong not only to Eagle Scouts but to all Americans. These stories form the heart of Legacy of Honor and offer us a chance to appreciate the profound impact that Eagle Scouts have had on American history and the lasting role they will play in our country's future.

This book is more than a collection of stories told by old men about their youth. Rather, it is a cry for America to wake up and see that its young men are confused and lost today amongst political correctness and gender neutrality. Listen carefully to what the Eagle Scouts are trying to say. The values of scouting and the friendships made during a young man's formative years remain with him forever. Scouting is the only place in most boys' lives where exposure to these values can be obtained and put into action while working with others. Parents are often too busy trying to make ends meet to spend time with their boys and besides that, boys listen to other adults before their parents anyway in most instances. As a scoutmaster who regrets he never made Eagle, I thank God for Scouting and Scouters and I thank Alvin, for this book.

5 out of 5 stars Legacy of Honor: The Values and Influence of America's Eagle Scouts.......2007-08-02

This book is filled with inspirational true stories. If you have a scout close to becoming Eagle, but has lost his desire to finish, reading this book could fill him with enough motivation to finish his Eagle work. I can tell you, anyone who had a chance to make the rank of Eagle and gave up -- regrets that decision for the rest of their lives. And for those few that do make it, they enjoy a special global recognition unique to the brotherhood the have joined, also for the rest of their lives.

5 out of 5 stars An Inspirational read !!!!.......2007-07-12

I bought these books for my two grandsons , who just earned the rank of Eagle. I flew from the East Coast to Hawaii for the Honor Court and presented the books to them. I had read some of it first and was quite impressed by the stories of other Eagle Scouts. I highly recommend the book to all young men pursuing the rank of Eagle Scout. It is a wonderful book.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Support of the Boy Scouts I EVER Read!!!.......2007-05-14

It is often that one wonders what makes true heroes. Are they made or born? Then you read a book like this. About Heroes and the common man, and how he started like the average boy in your neighborhood, and just 'went to Scouts every week', and 'had fun' But after six years of energy, leadership and being mentored, many become Eagle Scouts and then they pursue a measure of excellence that leads them to 'paths greater than any imagined' Astronauts, Political Leaders, Firemen, Rescuers, Saviors of Youth, and Military Escellence. 50 stories of folks just like us that become 'the top of the heap', and move others to join the heap, not to step on others less fortunate. Start anywhere, any part of this book, no plot, no difficult passages, just tear jerking reminders of men and boys who would strive to 'achieve' and did as youths and then as adults, with outstanding results. A must read for teachers, clergy, and psychologists who deal with youth who need role models.

5 out of 5 stars :Must Reading".......2007-05-08

This book should be requied reading for all Boy Scout leaders and all Scouts with a goal of attaining the Eagle rank. Both will get a valuable insight into what defines an Eagle Scout. Adults will find themselves more knowledgeable and better able to explain the value of earning the Eagle. Youth will better understand just what attaining the Eagle means and the legacy they are expected to continue once they have earned it.

As grippingly as any novelist, preeminent World War II historian Stephen Ambrose tells the horrifying, hallucinatory saga of Easy Company, whose 147 members he calls the nonpareil combat paratroopers on earth circa 1941-45. Ambrose takes us along on Easy Company's trip from grueling basic training to Utah Beach on D-day, where a dozen of them turned German cannons into dynamited ruins resembling "half-peeled bananas," on to the Battle of the Bulge, the liberation of part of the Dachau concentration camp, and a large party at Hitler's "Eagle's Nest," where they drank the madman's (surprisingly inferior) champagne. Of Ambrose's main sources, three soldiers became rich civilians; at least eight became teachers; one became Albert Speer's jailer; one prosecuted Bobby Kennedy's assassin; another became a mountain recluse; the despised, sadistic C.O. who first trained Easy Company (and to whose strictness many soldiers attributed their survival of the war) wound up a suicidal loner whose own sons skipped his funeral.

The Easy Company survivors describe the hell and confusion of any war: the senseless death of the nicest kid in the company when a souvenir Luger goes off in his pocket; the execution of a G.I. by his C.O. for disobeying an order not to get drunk. Despite the gratuitous horrors it relates, Band of Brothers illustrates what one of Ambrose's sources calls "the secret attractions of war ... the delight in comradeship, the delight in destruction ... war as spectacle." --Tim Appelo

Amazon.com Audibook Review

The men of E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne, volunteered for this elite fighting force because they wanted to be the best in the army--and avoid fighting alongside unmotivated, out-of-shape draftees. The price they paid for that desire was long, arduous, and sometimes sadistic training, followed by some of the most horrific battles of World War II. Actor Cotter Smith--a veteran of numerous TV movies and Broadway plays--spins Stephen Ambrose's tale with almost laconic ease. Anecdote by anecdote, he lets the power of the story build. By the time the company has gotten through D-day and seized Hitler's Eagle's Nest in Bavaria, we feel we know as much about the men and their missions as we do about our own brothers. (Running time: 5 hours, 4 cassettes) --Lou Schuler

Book Description

As good a rifle company as any in the world, Easy Company, 506th Airborne Division, U.S. Army, kept getting the tough assignments -- responsible for everything from parachuting into France early D-Day morning to the capture of Hitler's Eagle's Nest at Berchtesgaden. In Band of Brothers, Ambrose tells of the men in this brave unit who fought, went hungry, froze, and died, a company that took 150 percent casualties and considered the Purple Heart a badge of office. Drawing on hours of interviews with survivors as well as the soldiers' journals and letters, Stephen Ambrose recounts the stories, often in the men's own words, of these American heroes.

Stephen E. Ambrose tells the stories of Easy Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, US Army, from Normandy to Hitler's Eagle's nest and up to now (for some members of Easy Company). The company was established in the summer of 1942. The men came from different backgrounds, different parts of the United States. By the last evening of 1944, the company became an elite unit of airborne infantry. They parachuted into France early D-Day morning, captured Carentan, fought in Holland, held the perimeter at Bastogne, fought in Rhineland campaigne, and took Hitler's Eagle's Nest at Berchtesgaden. The company took almost 150 percent casualties.

This is a terrific read for World War II buffs.

It is an awesome book! It makes me so proud of what every soldier does for our country and so thankful for what they give up for our freedom.

4 out of 5 stars Review of BAND OF BROTHERS.......2007-07-23

The strength of this book is the knowledge and expertise of Stephen Ambrose regarding the history of WWII. Through countless interviews, vistits, letters, books and his travels, Ambrose writes the story of a close knit group of ordinary men who accomplished extraordinary things in the face of fear, cold, starvation and of course, death. By reading this book you will learn what an incredible group of men these guys were and it will make you proud to be an American. For me, this book really reinforced the fact that the freedoms that myself, along with my wife and kids enjoy did not come for free. It was paid for by the sacrifices of brave men like these.

I must say that I thought the effort involving the research in this book certainly deserved five stars. Unfortunatly the actual writing of the book was far less than that, perhaps three stars at most. I found myself having to reread things more than once trying to figure things out. I think this book may have been written for people with military experience, not the average citizen like myself. He uses a lot of abbreviations which were confusing, he never really explained the different companies, platoons, divisions, regiments, etc. so I never quite figured out who was where and why. Also the maps at the front of the book were far from adequate, which has been pointed out in previous reviews.

I still believe this is a definite four star book worth reading. It certainly could have been better if there had been more and better maps and if Ambrose would have taken his time and explained things better. He even admits in the acknowledgements at the end of the book that he had a deadline for when he wanted this book to be completed. I hope this helps you decide whether or not to read this book.

One final note: check the book for blank pages before you buy it especially the pages that come right after the pictures. I had three sections of four pages each that were left blank which resulted in missing about 12 pages of text.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful.......2007-07-21

I have nothing negative to say about this book. It's very easy to read and I would recommend it to anyone who is just starting their journey to be a history buff as well as those already well read on the subject. I also own the mini series on DVD (probably the best WWII "film" that I have EVER seen) and have found that the two really work well together. I would read a chapter and then watch the corresponding episode. By the end you feel really close to these extraordinary men to sacrificed so much for the betterment of our country and the world. They are the definition of heroes and because they refuse to call themselves heroes makes them even more so. They, and all of our soliders, make me extrememly proud to be an American.

5 out of 5 stars Salute to a great author!.......2007-07-09

Stephen E. Ambrose is probably the best history writer of our time. His documentation of Easy Company men and their extraordinary leader, Major Dick Winters is a fascinating read. Reading through the pages, is as reading ones diary. You believe you've come to know these men and a part of their experience and you become changed with the realization of what they lived through for the cause of freedom in WWII. Thank you, Mr. Ambrose for following your instincts on doing this remarkable story so that Easy and the 506th PIR, 101st Airborne will never be forgotten. Mr. Ambrose and his passion getting history down in books will be truly missed. This book is a must in any personal library collection.

1 out of 5 stars this book is a waste of good paper.......2007-09-13

I have been condicting ethical hacking for 3 years and this book was such a let down, it falls well short in providing and good detailed content. Basically its the kind of stuff you learn on day 1 and shows no evidence of experience from an author who can hack into systems. My advise is save your money as this book covers nothing you wouldnt find on Google in 5 minutes. You know it is so bad I think I will write my own book.

My advise google, wireshark, nmap and netcat the content you get it 5 minutes will be as good as this book.

Now Listen...

I know some of you look at these books as if it's a world of training people to be hackers. Now, maybe these books might create a few bad seeds, but they usually create a lot of good ones..

This book is astounding, I bought this book because I love researching all about hacking, security, and protection. My major is computer science and I am hoping to be a professional white hat security professional, a hacker that is hired to show the flaws in sites.

Now,when people see these books and say...this is madness!! books about hacking?!

I think these books are great. They help you protect yourself, your computer, your company, your website, your server.

This book shows a lot what hackers use...and the more you know about it, the better you can protect yourself. If you think that this trains bad hackers, well we cant change how some people use information. What I can tell you is that a lot of people will be better off with the information in this book for the companies and servers.

This author is excellent!
Great book!

4 out of 5 stars A good guide for the beginner ethical hacker........2006-11-30

There is alot of good knowledge to be learned in this book, but it is very cutthroat and dry. There are almost no "real world" examples of what they talk about, and alot of it talks about using programs that were created for linux.. Otherwise it is a good book, but I have read better.

5 out of 5 stars i love GHH.......2006-04-14

i have read tonnes of books on this subject.starting from secrets of a super hacker by knightmare(published way back in 94, trust me dat was a great read n even 2day i find myself glued to da back as the first time i read it.now coming back 2 gray hat hacking.this is wat i would like 2 call the hacking reference book for the next generation.every one concerned about security should consider picking up this book.u might as well save some money n picking up more knowledge than any of the hacking exposed books in the market.no this book is not for button clicking script kiddies who play around wid trojans n claim to be hackers or web defacers(lamers).if u belong to da breed of script kiddies pick up this disgustin book by ankit fadia (oh by the way ive reviewed it).i wouuld liek to congradulate the authors for the outstanding work put into this book.howeever it would be great to see expanded materials on various topics and a little more detail in tool description.its not bad but it could still be better.so as i said before get dis book u wont regret it.so kiddies grow up keep those hacking exposed n ankit fadias books apart throw em in da firplace burn em do anythin .but go get dis one
laterzzzzzz

4 out of 5 stars Covers more than the typical hacking book.......2006-02-12

"Gray Hat Hacking - The Ethical Hacker's Handbook" is not your normal hacking book. This book should not be lumped in with the "Hacking Exposed" series nor the likes of "Counter Hack". What differentiates Gray Hat Hacking (GHH) from other books is the amount of code the book offers. This book is not for script kiddies, but instead shows how to advance to the next level of hacking (and, more importantly, prevention) by devoting over 100 pages to developing programming skills for both Linux and Window exploits. I had not encountered a book that dedicated this much space to scripting.

The authors take a delicate balance at discussing tools that are well documented in other publications (ettercap, xploit2 & p0f), and mentioning some lesser known tools (sharefuzz, RATS and valgrind). While I believe there is no doubt that the authors know their material, I do agree with other reviewers in wishing GHH was simply expanded. I also like that GHH offers many referrences. Page for page, this book probably received more highlights than any other hacking book I own.

I give this book 4 pings out of 5:

Book Description

Talons of the Eagle offers a vivid portrayal of the last two hundred years of U.S.-Latin American relations, casting new light on issues such as economic integration, environmental protection, drug trafficking, and undocumented migration. Rather than concentrating only on US policy, as many texts do, it addresses the structural relationships of both regions. Focusing on international systems, the distribution of power, and the perception and pursuit of national interests, Smith uncovers recurrent regularities in the interaction between the U.S. and Latin America and offers a compelling analysis of the continuity and change in their relations, as well as provocative insights into the possible future of these relations. With an entirely new introduction and thorough revisions of the last four chapters and conclusion, as well as completely updated bibliography, this continues to be the ideal text for students in general courses on Latin American history and politics as well as courses on U.S. and inter-American foreign relations.

Very good analysis. Well written. An excellent read whether you are a beginner or somewhat versed in LatAm and US relations. It serves as a great review of history as well.

5 out of 5 stars First rate interdisciplinary approach to history........1998-09-15

In this very readable historiacl survey of U.S.-Latin American realations, Smith develops a template which demonstrates the logic of U.S. policy and Latin American response within the context of the global situation. To accomplish this, he breaks history into three general time periods: 1790s-Cold War, The Cold War, and the post-Cold War. In each of these periods, Smith develops the global context or "rules of the game", then moves on to the resulting U.S. policy. He finishes each historical era with an incisive analysis of Latin American options for response. This book is a must for students of Latin America and certainly for those individuals whose activities, whether they be commercial or official in nature, are shaping the book's next chapter.

Anthony Horowitz's enormously popular series about the world's premier teenage spy, returns for another round with secret agent Alex Rider fighting ingenious villains and charming every girl he meets. Eagle Strike, Horowitz's fourth fictional foray into the world of British spy agency MI6, starts out calmly enough as Alex and his lovely companion, Miss Sabina Pleasure, vacation with her family in the south of France. But before you can say Goldfinger, Alex spots his old nemesis, renowned assassin Yassen Gregorovich, on the beach. What Alex discovers is a plan so diabolical that it makes all of his previous adventures seem like a stroll in the Queen Mum's garden. Alex must fight to keep Gregorovich from executing the plans of a mysterious and murderous madman--an operation code named "Eagle Strike." He will just have to face down a few minor complications first: a virtual reality game that inflicts real pain; a fleet of Porche 911 GT3-driving hit men; and even a near fatal brush with death aboard the most famous aircraft in the world, Air Force One. But he'll persevere, or his name isn't Rider: Alex Rider. Eagle Strike, like all of the ridiculously fun Alex Rider adventures, is a pure guilty pleasure from start to finish. Even the most reluctant of readers won't be able to resist Alex's Bond-like ingenuity and charisma. Anthony Horowitz is a master of pacing, and as Alex swings from one cliff-hanging chapter to the next, Horowitz proves that you don't have to be Shakespeare to pen a crackerjack plot! --Jennifer Hubert

Bought this for my very active 12 year old (kiteboarding, surfing, skateboard, video game enthusiast, and musician) who has not been particularly enamored with reading--considers it "not fun" --like going to the dentist. He says he couldn't put it down. Read it in 4 days during the school week. Claims it's the best book he has ever read. Granted, hasn't read many, but getting him to enjoy a book this much is a major victory. He wants me to get all the books in this series.

I've read all of the Alex Rider books and i think Eagle Strike is the best. This book starts out where Alex is with Sabina on vacation in France. but then, he sees Yassen gregorovitch and 2 other men on a boat, and sees he cant go on with the vacation after Sabina's house house blows up. the policeman say it was a leak, but Alex Knows that Yassen was behind it all. alex gets really mad, and goes to the boat that he saw Yassen on. and when he's in there, he sees Yassen has Sir Damien Cray's privet phone # on it. he also sees a gun there, so he grabs the gun and goes to where Yassen is sleeping and almost pulls the trigger, but one of his men catches him. they deside what to do with him, and the desicion was make him go as a bullfighter. its either that or they shoot him. so alex goes to the bullfighting arena with Yassen's men pointing a pistol at him the whole time to make sure he doesn't leave. but of course alex finds a way out of it. he flies back to london and tries to persued them that he saw Sir Damien Cray's privet # on yassen's phone, and that they're up to no good, but they dont belive him. so alex desides to go alone.
Damien cray is launching a new Video game called the GAMESLAYER thats supposed to be the world's greatest new VG system. and he's laaunching it at hyde park. Alex goes there andDamien Cray asks if there is any teens there and someone pches him up face-to-face with DC. In the book Eagle Strike the setting takes place in England, at Damian Cray's factory for the GAME SLAYER, a new video game system.
In this book Damian Cray, who is a multi-million dollar singer, made a new high-tech video game system. The M16, or British intelligence, doesn't trust him because everyone who questions him seems to be killed in an accident sooner or later. HMMM? So Alex Rider, a M16 agent, is at the grand presentation of the GAME SLAYER. He is the only teenager there, so Cray calls him on the stage and wants him to try it. It was amazing. Later Alex finds out Cray uses the game system & factory as a cover-up for another plan. The plan is to blow up all illegal drugs in the world, but to do that he must use the U.S.A.'s nuclear bombs. So he steals the president's airplane that has all access to the 12 bombs. They are launched to blow up different parts of the world that make drugs. But this tactic would also take millions of innocent lives. So after a fierce battle in the plane Cray is pushed out and sucked in the engine & killed, Alex then self destructs the bombs in space. So Alex saves the world again.
I recommend this book to people who like suspenseful, action packed books that you just can't put down!

3 out of 5 stars Few facts, mostly invented.......2004-04-13

In the 1970's, at the height of the Hitler boom, Glenn Infield had a cottage industry. He produced numerous books on Hitler and Eva Braun, made a ton of money and then thankfully, disappeared from the face of the earth. I say "thankfully" because Infield never was bothered to get his facts straight. He was (in)famous for making up interviews with long-lost Hitler associates, and even inventing people if it suited him. He even claimed to have interviewed Unity Mitford in 1976; the only problem was that she had been dead for 35 years. Oh well, Infield never was one to allow the facts to get in the way of telling a juicy story.

So the text is inaccurate, shoddy and unintentionally funny. He claims Hitler necked on the sofa with a British woman at Bayreuth in 1935, never mind that the woman herself later admitted she'd never even met the Fuehrer or Glenn Infield, for that matter, who claimed to have interviewed her. I could go on and on, but let's just say the book is mostly fiction. The photographs, however, are exceptional. There are actually some rare gems in here, though, as usual, Infiel misidentifies dozens of them. There are at least twenty photos of Gretl Braun (Eva's sister), that are identified as Eva. Infield even has a photo of Max Amann that he says is Heinrich Himmler. Sigh.

To sum up, if you want some unusual and rare photos of Hitler and Eva, there are in the book. Forget the accuracy of the words, however.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Historical Fiction.......2007-08-30

Under the Eagle is a great historical fiction read. The characters are well developed and the story pace is fast and engaging. There is never a dull moment in this story. I actually like Simon Scarrow's writing better than Bernard Cornwell in the historical fiction area!

2 out of 5 stars Weak.......2007-08-06

While some of the insights into Roman conquest were helpful, the plot line and characters were distracting at best.

The secondary plots of intrique and spies contributed little to the action.

I will not further read anything by Scarrow.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put this book down!.......2007-06-29

Simon Scarrow's book was awesome! His characters are a nitty-gritty, down in the trenches view on the Roman Legions in the early Roman Empire. Focusing on two main characters, there's enough to love and hate here for everyone. A great adventure, with some serious historical flavor!

5 out of 5 stars Change of Pace.......2007-02-25

I've just finished a book by Nicholas Nicastro and I loved the change of pace and exciting events in this book compared to nicholas's. This was definitly a page turner with multible events and storylines to keep the reader interested. I've already purchased the other books to this trilogy and can't wait to get them. This is fiction but also has historical facts within it.

3 out of 5 stars If you know Roman history....you'll hate it.......2007-02-15

This is much better written than the Steven Saylor FINDER series. The story of a Roman second-in-command on the verge of invading Britan is interesting. Emperor Claudius has selected our hero to deliver instructions to Vespacian on the Gaul-ish front. OK. But why do I feel the author wants this to be made into a movie? Ever feel like your being tricked? Well, this novel is gripping enough but it could have been set in the Civil War, WWII, or the Invasion of Grenada. The characters are slightly cartoonish, but if you want an action packed quasi-historical read, then by all means, buy the book, get on the plane, and finish it before you land at the coast. If you want adventure with sandals and swords....here 'tis. If you want history to wash it down with, then Robert Graves, Stephen Dando-Collins, or Adrian Goldsworthy is just the refreshing saloon you are looking for, pilgram.
It is a tricky balance keeping the interest of the masses looking-for adventure-stories weighted against the couch-historians like myself. I'll buy one more, because Scarrow is a good writer. But one more like this will throw me back in the (metaphorical) arms of Michael Curtis Ford.

Advance praise for Hotel California

"A British rock critic obsessed with America, Barney Hoskyns brings a genuine love as well as an outsider's keen eye to the rise and fall of the California scene in the sixties and seventies. This is a riveting story, sensitively told."
—Anthony DeCurtis, Contributing Editor, Rolling Stone

"Comprehensive and lively, Hotel California offers a front-row seat on the wild ride—fueled by drugs, sex, and lots of cash—that took Southern California singer-songwriters from hot tubs and local bars to sold-out stadiums, private jets, and the bestselling album of all time."
—Alan Light, author of The Skills to Pay the Bills: The Story of the Beastie Boys

"One of our finest pop historians reappraises a neglected and often maligned milieu. Barney Hoskyns deftly evokes not just the decadence but the sense of discovery rooted in 1960s idealism and fostered by a gaggle of record industry mavericks who, for a brief period, managed to make art and business coexist."
—Simon Reynolds, author of Rip It Up and Start Again

4 out of 5 stars A Thoroughly Enjoyable Summer Read.......2007-08-20

This is the definitive story of Laurel Canyon and the rise and fall of the singer-songwriters that defined an era. Fabulous backstage gossip, great interviews, and a long, revealing look at David Geffen and his role in shaping the sound and artistry of so many great musicians -- Joni, Laura, CSNY, Gene Clark, JT, you name it.

I enjoyed this book so much I didn't want it to end. It also turned me on to some forgotten songwriters and albums that got lost in the shuffle -- Judee Sill being one amazing example.

An essential read for music fans.

3 out of 5 stars Hotel California: The True-Life Adventures of Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young, Mitchell, Taylor, Browne, Ronstadt, Geffen, the Eagle.......2007-08-04

No Pretender. Interesting insight into the genre of singer-songwriter and into the time period when music was becoming personal to a generation that would lay the groundwork music for future generations. Good background story on the artists and players, explaining with some detail the lyrics that still roll around in my head. Somewhat shallow story describing a shallow lifestyle that resulted in deep emotion. Too much repetition, would have been more interesting if more of the story was told with less dialogue. That said - it's worth the time, and the knowledge gain. Good to know who's behind Linda's "You're no good", and Joni's "Case of You" and why James went to "Mexico". Boomer fodder.

4 out of 5 stars A good read.......2007-08-03

An enjoyable book with a lot of insight into the rock stars of the era.

2 out of 5 stars poorly written,inaccurate.......2007-06-10

don't bother to buy this very poorly written book that has distorted facts. The author is basically repeating various quotes from many sources repeatedly.Boring...His facts are wrong. For example he states that Graham Nash was a very compromising person. In fact he was not and this has been verified with his past history with the Hollies.
I am not a critical person but this book was a real disappointment to me...

3 out of 5 stars Hotel California - the way to stardom.......2007-05-12

This books gives details of how various musical artist found their way to the big leagues; who was dating who; who was living with who; and all the secrets that you want to know about your idols.

4 out of 5 stars Good book on the unit, but Haney's is better..........2007-06-27

I really enjoyed this book. It gives a great history of the formation of Delta Force, but if you are only going to read one book on the subject; INSIDE DELTA FORCE by Eric Haney is much better. That said, this book is a page-turner and well written. There's a bit of self-congratulation; but Beckwith was an impressive individual.

4 out of 5 stars Not quite as good as Haney's book, but still good.......2007-05-19

If I had not read Eric Haney's book "Inside Delta Force" before I read this one, I probably would have loved it. The inherent problem is that both books cover roughly the same time frame, with Beckwith's book beginning earlier (going back to Vietnam inspirations) and ending while Haney was still in Delta. Both books provide detailed coverage of Operation Eagle Claw, which can be a little redundant, but that's no one's fault really. What I liked about Beckwith's book was the understanding it gave about where the idea for Delta came from, what his operational credibility was, and the intense opposition he faced in birthing this elite unit. Some folks will be bored with the various political machinations at work, but I found it interesting to see how something like this comes to be. Less interesting to me was Beckwith's account of Selection and the like because he didn't have to go through it like Haney did. I'd definitely recommend this book, but if you only want to read ONE book on Delta, I'd recommend Haney's first. And while there is certainly some overlap in information between the two works, I read them back to back and still enjoyed them.

5 out of 5 stars Delta Force: the Army's Elite Counterterrorist Unit.......2007-05-12

The book was in excellant condition, arrived on time.

4 out of 5 stars High Level Overview.......2007-03-10

A great story about the birth of Delta Force from the founder himself. Beckwith takes you from the original idea, based on his experience with the British Special Air Service (SAS), through their first mission (to free the hostages in Iran).

Because of his rank and the role he played in this story, you get a high level overview instead of the view from an operator on the ground (as in Eric Haney's book - Inside Delta Force). One item that was particularly interesting to me was the test (based on the SAS) they ran prior to their first real mission to determine if their operators would actually engage the terrorist. Although it was successful, they later decided to not use this test again and surmised that the British needed to determine if their operators would fire their weapons but the US needed to create rules on when to not fire their weapons. Not sure what that says about the two cultures, but it was interesting none the less.

Beckwith is definitely a strong personality who does not compromise. You learn much about the man and the government bureaucracy he fought for so many years. In the end, he was successful and we are a safer nation because of his efforts
