Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

I don't care what other people say of this book. Those affirmig it's fake, they hadn't ever read it. Or have some special reasons to do so. "Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see..." This book won't make you feel comfortable. It'll make you feel free. It'll make you feel you're "not the only one" to feel you'd been lied to for centuries.

Here is a serie of books which turns "the whole world" upside down. I learned a lot of it and I hope that a new book from A.T. Fomenko will follow very quick. A absolute must for everybody who is interested in history or even a little bit from it.

Prescient St Augustine?.......2006-02-05

We can so far divide the New Chronology into the following three parts:

a) The verifiable theory that proves consensual chronology wrong with the aid of astronomy, statistics and mathematics;

b) The new chronology hypothesis based on a new understanding of known historical facts and the most likely logical explanation of the most obvious inconsistencies inherent in the official version of history;

c) The history conjectures, that is experimental historical reconstructions based on assumptions that the authors believe to make sense in the light of their research and linguistic parallels - void of ironclad factual support to date.

Fomenko's theory complies with the most rigid scientific standards as a whole:

It gives a coherent explanation of what we already know.

- It is consistent: independent lines of inquiry all lead to the same conclusion.

- The predictions it makes are confirmed empirically.

Fomenko goes by the following axioms:

- Chronology is the basis of history;

- Human evolution has always been linear, gradual and irreversible;

- The "cyclic" nature of human civilization is a myth, likewise all the gaps, duplicates, "dark ages" and "renaissances" that we know from consensual history;

- The accumulation of geographical knowledge as reflected in cartography is a gradual and irreversible process;

- The chronological distance between a given manuscript and the events described therein is proportional to the amount of distortions it contains;

- There is no "useless" information in authentic ancient sources.

Why the mainstream historians do not shower mathematician Academician Dr.Prof Fomenko with thanks and laurels?

The Russians:

Because Fomenko asserts that there was no such thing as the Tartar and Mongol invasion followed by three centuries of slavery, providing a formidable body of documental evidence to prove his assertion. The so-called "Tartars and Mongols" were the actual ancestors of the modern Russians, living in a bilingual state with Arabic spoken as freely as Russian. The ancient Russian state was governed by a double structure of civil and military authorities. The hordes were actually professional armies with a tradition of lifelong conscription (the recruitment being the so-called "blood tax"). Their "invasions" were punitive operations against the regions that attempted tax evasion. Fomenko proves that Russian history as we know it today is a blatant forgery concocted by a host of German scientists brought to Russia by the usurper dynasty of the Romanovs, whose ascension to the throne was the result of coup d'état, charged with the mission of making their reign look legitimate. Fomenko proves Ivan the Terrible to be a collation of four rulers, no less. They represented the two rival dynasties - the legitimate rulers and the ambitious upstarts. The winner took it all! Over some 30 years of controversy, Russian historians have made a most remarkable transition - they were initially accusing the young mathematician Fomenko of anticommunist dissident activity and attempts to deface the historical legacy of Soviet Russia; nowadays the middle-aged mathematician is accused of adhering to "pro-communist Russian nationalism" and defacing the proud historical legacy of Great Russia.

The Westerners:

Because Fomenko blows consensual Russian history to smithereens, successfully removing a crucial cornerstone from underneath the otherwise impeccable edifice of World History. Fomenko adds insult to injury, wiping out one by one the Ancient Rome (the foundation of Rome in Italy is dated to the XIV century A. D.), the Ancient Greece and its numerous poleis, which he identifies as the mediaeval crusader settlements on the territory of Greece, and the Ancient Egypt (the pyramids of Giza become dated to the XI-XV century A. D. and identified as the royal cemetery of the Global "Mongolian" Empire, no less). The civilization of the Ancient Egypt is irrefutably dated to the XII-XV century A. D. with the aid of the ancient Egyptian horoscopes cut in stone. He was the first one to decipher and date all such horoscopes, coming up with mediaeval dates in every case. English historians rage at the suggestion that the history of Ancient England was de facto a Byzantine import transplanted to the English soil by the fugitive Byzantine nobility. To reward the English historians who consider themselves the true scribes of World History, the cover of the present book portrays Tintoretto's Jesus Christ crucified on the Big Ben.

The Chinese:

Because Fomenko wipes out the Ancient History of China outright. No such thing. Full point. The compilation of the so-called Ancient Chinese History is reliably datable to the XVII-XVIII century only. It is perfectly recognizable as the Ancient European history, reworked and transcribed in hieroglyphs as yet another historical transplantation, this time performed on the Chinese soil by the loving Jesuit hands. The Chinese are the next in line to go berserk. Chinese history is inevitably bound to get both more ancient and more eventful, proportionally to the growing involvement of China in the world affairs. Chinese historians will keep on finding valid proof of prehistoric Chinese spaceflights until the Politburo orders them to shut up.

The Arabs:

Too bad. Islam with all its key figures is datable to XV-XVI century A. D. Arabic historians may find consolation in the crucial historical role of the Ottoman Empire in the XVI-XVII century. The trouble is that this empire was initially a Christian state, with Hagia Sophia identifiable as Temple of Solomon, according to Fomenko! We can only guess if the acquisition of Alexander the Great (a Macedonian and a Christian) as the founder of the Muslim World Empire will make Fomenko's theories more acceptable to the Arabic mainstream. He certainly does not spare any holy cows at all, claiming The Stone of Qa'Aba in Mecca to contain the lost Arch of the Covenant.

The Divinity:

Despite of reiterated statement that his theory is all about chronology and not Religion, Fomenko stirs up a whole condominium of wasp nests. His collection of anathemas, fatwa, and other condemnations from all parties concerned is already considerable. Little wonder, considering that the history of religions à la Fomenko looks as follows: the pre-Christian period (before the XI century and JC), Bacchic Christianity (XI-XII century, before and after JC), JC Christianity (XII-XVI century) and its subsequent mutations into Orthodox Christianity, the Catholicism, Islam, Buddhism, and so on.

According to Fomenko we know strictly NOTHING about the events that predate the X century A. D.

St Augustin was prescient when he spoke unto us: "be wary of mathematicians, particularly when they speak the truth."

Something of a disappointment.......2005-09-09

After having read the first volume of this expected series of 7 volumes I was triggered by the thesis of these authors that ancient Greek and Roman history did in fact take place in the Middle Ages. So I started studying medieval history of the Middle East - also known as Islamic history - to find out if the opponents of the ancient Greeks and Romans - the Acheamenid Persians, Sassanids, Scythians, Egyptians, etc. - also have their duplicates in medieval history. My search was disappointing: none of the many medieval Islamic dynasties seemed to correspond to the ancient middle eastern rulers.

However, I did find a close correspondence between Herodotus' Persian kings and medieval events:

- the defeat and capture of an Anatolian king - the Lydian Croesus - by the Persian conqueror Cyrus is identical to the defeat and capture of another Anatolian king - sultan Bayezid - by the Asian/Mongol conqueror Tamerlane;
- the Persian conquest of Egypt by the cruel tyrant Cambyses reds almost exactly as the Ottoman conquest of Egypt by Selim the Grim (note the nickname!);
- Darius the Lawgiver of the Persian Empire looks very much alike to Sulayman the Magnificent, the Lawgiver in Islamic history;
- Xerxes, whose main claim to fame is to be defeated by the Greeks at the naval battle of Salamis, looks like Selim II (the Sot) whose main claim to fame is to be defeated by a Spanish-Italian alliance at the naval battle of Lepanto.

I should have expected Fomenko et al. to arrive at similar conclusions, however, they claim that the Persian kings are the alter egos of the Angevin kings of Sicily whose biographies do not contain the exploits of the Persian kings.

The similiarities I indicate lead to the conclusion that Herodotus must have written his Histories at the close of the 16th century. But this is extremely late, given that Herodotus is "the Father of History", so therefore all other "ancient" histories must have been fabricated even later. Yet, the founders of modern chronology - Scaliger and Petavius - laid their foundations also at the close of the 16th century and had the full corpus of ancient histories already at their disposal.

It seems to me that Fomenko has to address these inconsistencies, maybe in the forthcoming 5 volumes?

Another critique of their book is that the correspondencies between different rulers are often based on a superficial comparison of the biographies; upon a more thorough comparison many details appear that do not correspond at all.

Finally, the authors rely heavily on the works of Gregorovius (1821-1891!!) - his medieval histories of Rome and Athens - as the source of medieval history; these works are - at least in the West - hoplessly outdated and have been superceded by more up-to-date works (for instance, Julius Norwich's trilogy on Byzantine history is not even cited).

If you agree with Fomenko that Roman chronology is basically the foundation of the entire edifice of global chronology; you would also certainly agree that despite its numerous gaps and inconsistencies, Roman history is the best-documented field of ancient history, and thus a reference scale. But how well is the actual date of the Eternal City's foundation known?

Firstly, Rome is supposed to have been founded by the Trojans who had to flee after the fall of Troy. Some claim Rome to have been founded by Aeneas and Ulysses shortly after Troy had fallen; others are of the opinion that there was an entire dynasty that ruled for 500 years between the fall of Troy and the foundation of Rome.

Well, that's just an innocent 500 years long misunderstanding compared with what heretic Fomenko says, asserts, proves in his second volume: Second Roman Empire, Third Roman Empire, Biblical Kingdom of Israel, Biblical Kingdom of Judah, Holy Roman Empire are stories about basically same events, written from different points of view at different times. The underlying events have actually taken place during xii-xv cy. These histories have been written and perfected by multitude of highly talented humanist and clerical writers of xiii-xvi cy disguised as "ancients" with glorious names like Homer, Pluto, Thucydides etc..Chronology 2.0 beta..

Great Book for City Dwelling Amatuer Astronomers!.......2007-02-16

Living in the South Florida Peninsula, you get used to light pollution. In 2005, I purchased my first "real" telescope and soon learned how badly light polluted South Florida really is. Although a trip to a dark sky site is only 60 miles away, I live in the suburbs outside of Miami and wanted to take advantage of my decent sized back yard. My sky's limiting magnitude is around 4, the sky towards the north is a grayish white haze where only Polaris is visible and the big dipper if high enough in the sky. The rest of the sky is a little better but after 2 years of limited success in searching for DSOs, I decided to look for help.
The Urban Astronomer's Guide may be the help I require. The book is well written and easy to follow. This book was written where beginners as well as intermediate amateur astronomers would find it interesting.
Part I of the book entitled: Telescopes and Techniques covers everything from the why one would want to observe from the city to the writers experience with types of telescopes and needed techniques to beat the light pollution blues. Mr. Mollise explains the advantages in large and short focal length telescopes and which objects benefit from either type. The author discusses in great detail the differences between the different types of Light-Pollution Reduction Filters, eyepieces, finders, computer software, print atlases, etc.
The book discuses techniques which experienced amateurs may be familiar with but beginners and intermediates may have heard have but not understand completely. Things like the use of averted vision, "jiggling" the telescope to tease out details in faint objects. Dark Adaptation is discussed and it's importance, all invaluable lessons that every amateur astronomer should learn.
Part II of the book entitled: A Walking Tour of the Cosmos is what makes this book a keeper. This section of the book goes over examples of objects that are perfect for city observation. The four chapters as you might imagine are broken up by season, Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. Each season gives 4 lists of objects that the Author feels are viewable for the given season and time. An example of such a tour is Spring's Tour 1. Objects included in this tour are M94, M51, M106, M63, M81, M82, M101, M97, M3 and the Double Star Cor Caroli.

Each object is discussed in detail with the author's notes from his personal journal. Mr. Mollise discusses the use of filters that can enhance a particular object, magnification that should be used to view certain objects, and what you should expect to see at the eyepiece. The author also includes his personal illustrations of objects he's included in his journals, which gives you a good idea of what you should be able to see in the eyepiece. The illustrations are very good and to me are much more useful than the Hubble type images commonly seen in astronomy books.
The only thing I found a little odd about this book would be the inclusion of such difficult to see objects as M1 and M51. The author even writes: "Sadly, I have to admit that in the city it (M51) is something of a dud." He also writes: "you have to be satisfied just to say you've seen it (M1)." These are just two of several objects the author himself confesses are extremely challenging, if not impossible to view from a light-polluted location. Why not focus on objects that are less challenging? Maybe have one object at the end of each tour that might be a challenge.
This is not to say the book does not reward the reader with some surprisingly easy to see objects. I was recently treated to a "hidden treasure" in the open cluster M46. As it turns out there is a small planetary nebulae (NGC2438) within this semi-impressive cluster that makes M46 a showpiece object in my opinion. If not for this book, I may not have spent much more than 10 minutes viewing M46. I now find myself going back to it time after time just as I do with M42 and M45.
Overall the book is a good read. This book in written for beginner's with some experience and can be useful to intermediate amateurs who might not be getting the most from their telescopes due to light pollution issues within the Urban setting. Part II in particular I've found invaluable and it will definitely keep me coming back for more.

Indispenisble definitive guide for citybound deep-sky enthusiasts!.......2006-09-02

This is a work that has been long overdue. A book on urban astronomy that focuses soley on deep-sky objects, and practical recommendations for how to view them, equipment and techniques. A most comprehensive list, more than any other book of its kind. But by no means the only things that can be seen, there are more than in this book (as I have discovered). But by showing what you can see, you can try for more.

Rod writes with an authority about many subjects at hand, but his style is very approachable and appreciated by us amateurs. His subject matter is applicable to my Miami (Florida) skies and I am proud to display this book among the many astronomy books that I own.

Outstanding Repeat read value.......2006-07-04

This is an excellent book for anyone who lives in light polluted skies (OK, this includes EVERYONE EAST of the Mississippi river, and a good part of the rest of the civilized world).

Rod's approach and writing style, make this a good book for amateur astronomer's of all levels.

The first half of the book is filled with tips, and ideas, and how-to's that are worth the price of the book alone, all designed to help everyone get the most out of their skies no matter how much light pollution they have. Nothing will make the light pollution go away, so Rod's book is the perfect inspiration for those of us who feel like giving up when we look up and see so few stars from our urban or suburban locations.

The second half holds the key to making this an outstanding book for generations to come, because Rod goes into detail with personal observation's and descriptions about a large number of objects that those of us with "darkness-challenged" skies will still be able to enjoy. All of this gives Rod's book a very high repeat read value, since Rod covers objects for all seasons, and his Southern wit, charm, and humor combine to make this a 5 stars book.

A Detailed Interpretation of Angkor Wat.......2003-06-15

Eleanor Mannikka's grand idea is that the symbolism of Angkor Wat can be understood by interpreting the most significant measurements on the temple as references to Cambodian astronomical, calendrical, and religious concepts. Thus, for example, she identifies some distances, on the entrance bridge and outer enclosure, as referring to the Four Ages (yugas) of Hindu cosmology. The Churning of the Sea of Milk, at the Western Entrance, symbolizes the annual orbital oscillations of the sun and moon between summer and winter solstices. The third enclosure records, in its dimensions, some important events of Suryavarman's reign, and indicates that the king was symbolically bringing a new "golden age" to mankind. The upper levels of the temple represent Mt. Meru, the home of the gods and especially of Vishnu, who is the supreme deity in this temple. The measurements in this part of the temple include a mandala of the gods with lunar and solar astronomical cycles.

In addition to its architectural symbolism, the temple's measurements also provide a great deal of information about the third gallery reliefs, and even help identify which gods would be represented by the (now absent!) statues that were set up in various locations in the temple.

Mannika's book will be accessible to most interested readers, especially now that it has been issued in softcover. While the book does contain (necessarily!) a lot of long and involved calculations, it is possible for the reader to skip over the numerical details and still get a good sense of the author's interpretations and conclusions.

Narrowly focused but compelling analysis of the great temple.......2001-10-18

Based on a University of Michigan doctoral dissertation, this book provides an astonomical/numerological interpretation of the awe-inspiring temple of Angkor Wat. I would love to have it with me at the temple on an equinox or solstice (though it is a little heavy to carry, and Cambodia is always hot). It has splendid photographs and architectural drawings and makes a convincing case that components of the temple were aligned with the sun and based on measurements and iterations of the sacred numbers of 32 and 12.

Mannikka has interesting things to say about the cult of the devarâja (usually translated as god-king), Sûryavarman II in particular (she believes that the unit of measurement for the temple was the distance between his elbow and outstretched fingertip: 43545 m.

The book is essential for those interested in the architecture. Although well-written, it is dauntingly technical.

Not Recommended for the Traveler.......2001-03-31

Although the book is well written and shows detailed academic insight into Angkor, it offers little for those interested in a general overview of the temples and their history.

I have also purchased Angkor by Claude Jacques. In terms of preparing for my upcoming trip, I've found this book to be far more beneficial.

Great book if you ALREADY know a lot about the Angkor Wat........1999-09-06

This is a great book if you've already studied the Angkor Wat. If you haven't, there's too much detail to absorb. I think the book is brilliant, but it's not the appropriate guide for the first-time student of Angkor.

Picture book of CGI spacecraft exteriors.......2007-07-20

The book's subtitle is "The Work of John Frassanito & Associates for NASA". While it is certainly true that this firm worked on the interior for Skylab, there is only a single image related to Skylab's interior space, and only a few other interior concept drawings.

The book primarily consists of one to two (large-format) pages of text for each chapter, and then a series of images. A few pages contain thumbnails (i.e., the assembly sequence for the International Space Station), but most contain one or two high-resolution images, with a hand-full of two-page spreads.

I gave this book two stars (and returned my copy to Amazon) because it was not at all what I'd hoped for. I took "Architecture" in the title (and the one-sentence description) as an indication that the book would address aspects of the interiors and habitable spaces of manned spacecraft, and hoped it would show alternative concepts and address the evolution of designs for those of its topics that have actually been realized. It does not. It appears that most of the work that this architectural firm has done for NASA is the preparation of concept/visualization artwork (stills and animations) for the presentation of established spacecraft designs, rather than interior work or design-evolution work.

Based on the Preface by Buzz Aldrin and the Introduction (both too long to retype here), it seems that the goal of the book was to be a modern equivalent of Bonestell's illustrations of proposed space projects from the '50s and '60s. In this, it may well succeed. The illustrations are certainly beautiful and include some spacecraft concepts I hadn't seen before.

Read this book with a very healthy level of skeptisim!

The claims put forth in this work has been debunked by many high level science experts, such as Phil Plait ( Author of Bad Astronomy ) and Seth Shostak ( SETI Institute) - among others.

But don't take my word for it. Go do the research yourself!

In the words of the late/great Carl Sagan, "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof!"

Far out? Yes. But..........2007-09-24

Funny thing, the internet. You start out going one place and end up somewhere else altogether. While looking for information about Jack Parsons (founder of Jet Propulsion Laboratories) I eventually, somehow, ended up here at The Monuments of Mars. That's okay. I happen to have a copy of Monuments (4th edition) so I decided I might as well post a review. Then I read about half of the 70-something reviews already posted and wondered what else was there to be said?

Clearly, Hoagland's massive work engenders its own weight in controversy. But, having followed Hoagland's work for many years, I'm inclined to think perhaps that is one of Hoagland's greatest contributions and perhaps one of the most valuable aspects of what he does.

Hoagland's motto (a rephrased version of the Star Trek motto) is "To boldly go where someone has gone before." Obviously that's a reference to his whole underlying assumption that some intelligent species had been on Mars and on our Moon centuries ago. But I'm inclined to think perhaps the original Star Trek motto more accurately fits Hoagland himself: "To boldly go where no one has gone before." (Yes, I know, I know. That's not the ORIGINAL original. It's the "other" original.) Hoagland has consistently proposed ideas that were/are pretty far out. But he also provides the data to back up his ideas. True, not everyone supports his claims or the data he uses to back up those claims but, man, he sure does make you think. And not just think in conventional terms but think outside the box. After all, isn't that where some of the greatest discoveries are made? Einstein anyone? The Wright Brothers? Tesla? Who am I missing?

The Face on Mars. The pyramids on Mars. The strange objects on the Moon. Are these all really artificial constructions created by alien beings from another planet? Another dimension? I don't know. But having read Monuments and after listening to Hoagland's arguments I can say I'm open to the possibility that he may be right.

And let us not overlook the fact that Hoagland isn't just some "nobody" who somehow sneaked his way into the limelight. Back in the 1960s he was the NBC consultant for the moon landing of Surveyor 1. A couple years later he became the director of a major science museum and planetarium in Connecticut. Then he became a science advisor to Walter Cronkite during the Apollo missions. I could go on but I think the point is made.

I would recommend The Monuments of Mars if for no other reason than to give your critical thinking skills a workout and decide for yourself whether or not someone has gone there before. Are Hoagland's ideas far out? Yes. But... isn't that where we want to go?

absolutly amazing.......2007-09-22

I only recently learned of Richard C. Hoagland when I stumbled upon his website. I was intrigued by some of the things written on there so I decided to buy this book.

At first I was cautious at believing what he had to say, but everything he says is very-well documented and not only that, it is backed by many different scientists from many different fields.
While he is very eager to claim life on Mars, he does indeed back all of his claims with evidence(all backed by legitmate scientists) and outright says when he is speculating.

Those that say this is psuedo-science, obviously do not beleive in any of this to begin with, meaning they could not possibly give a fair review. In other words, they had probably made up their mind before reading the book. Also, the argument that you can not go by fuzzy pictures, does not work, as updated pictures from the more recent Mars mission continues to prove him right.

One thing I did not like was the fact that there were not more recent pictures and more pictures overall.

Overall this was a very good book and if you are open minded you should find this book very persuading, otherwise don't bother reading it.

Tabloid Science.......2007-04-13

This book was a disappointment. I have never dreaded reading such a large book as this one. Not that I don't agree that there appears to be Martian Architecture on Mars or I wouldn't have spent so much $ or time on this rediculous book. Hoagland writes a 700 page tabloid book on Mars. Incredible! Too much "old" Hoagland history and too many disjointed pictures/images. He spends way too much time on the rediculous "face". One photo or the first Viking photo makes it look like a face and THAT IS IT. Period!!!! He must have at least fifty pages just on the face alone! Reading this book was more like experiencing a freak show at the county fair. I recommend that you not waste your time on this book. The guy is definitely correct that there appears to be "life on Mars" but take my word for it, you'd be better off buying a science fiction book.....it would be more convincing. I haven't read it but a better book would be The Martian Enigmas: A Closer Look: The Face, Pyramids, and Other Unusual Objects on Mars Second Edition by Mark J. Carlotto and it is not so long......Scotty beam this guy up to the Enterprise and KEEP HIM THERE! I want my money back!

Good Explanation of One Point of View.......2007-02-28

Mr. Hoadland certainly has better eyes than I do. I look at the pictures he has included in this book and read his descriptions and just don't see what he sees. Yes, I see some vague resemblence to a face in the original pictures taken by the Viking orbiter in 1976. Then I look at the newer pictures taken at higher resolution and different lighting and if I wasn't deliberately looking for a face I'd just see some mountains.

Now once you have a fact, then it isn't a big step to go find other thing with which we humans can identify, e.g. a city, a fortress, a pyramid. It's not unlike laying on the grass in the summer time with a pretty girl and seeing figures in the clouds. (I don't know why the girl has to be pretty, but it fits with the story.)

He also discusses the meteorites from Mars, but in much less detail. Presumably this was just coming to light as this book was going to press and will be treated more completely in the next edition.

Mr. Hoagland is clearly out on the edge of what scientists are believing about Mars. There is some evidence that yes there is or may have been some kind of life on mars. But there is also some evidence that contradicts the other findings. The majority of scientists do not believe that conclusive evidence has been found.

Tailored for City Observing.......2005-10-24

Written by a professional astronomer who headed the NYC Parks dept metro astronomy program, this book details the types of objects and techniques for viewing them not found in any general amateur astronomy text.

A text for the beginning city observer, Matloff's book concentrates on subjects such as how to find your way around the sky when there are only a few dozen or less stars visible; what objects are are visible under such conditions; and deals with the Moon Sun and bright planets at leagth as these objects are the meat on the urban observer's plate.

Altogether, this book is recommended to those city dwellers who have a hesitant interest in astronomy, wondering just what can be seen under severely light polluted skies. Turns out there is a great deal after all and Matloff makes for a good beginning guide.

If looking for a guide to urban observing, SKIP THIS ONE........2004-02-21

This book mostly consists of introductory general information about astronomy. The gimmick of this book that gives it its title is the automatic insertion of the word "urban" in front of the word "astronomer", "astronomy", or "observer". The star charts included in the book are among the worst ever printed and depict all the stars as the same brightness. Don't waste your money on this one (I bought mine used).

A Clear View of the City.......2000-08-09

I just recieved this text and am happy I did. Finally, a compact, easy to understand peace on the ancient city. This text brings clarity to our understanding of the text of Revelation and to the ancient understanding of cities in general. Using anthropology, Malina once again helps current readers come to a better and clearer understanding of ancient culture. I wish this was out earlier for my former students. A great tool for scholars and students alike and a more than affordable addition to any library.

A Great Guide for the Urban Astronomer.......2006-03-15

Having read this book through several times, I admit I am baffled by the disparaging reviews of this book by others here. I have a shelf full of books, and this book is one of two that I keep going back to again and again.

Most books start out with the "find dark skies" order, and assume you won't do any real observing from your light polluted yard. Mr. Scagell takes a different approach, essentially encouraging us to view the sky as "half full" rather than "half empty." By listing targets (and the methodology in selecting targets) and explaining the challenges and solutions to many of the problems we run into while in the city, this book shows that astronomy doesn't have to be done from remote locations, and that it is possible to enjoy this grand hobby from locations that are as far from ideal as we can imagine.

Needs a good editing job---.......2002-02-09

This is one of the poorest books I have read on the subject of amateur astronomy. In principal, the ideas behind this book are sound. I especially liked the instructions on how to build a 'barn door' mount for a camera. Unfortunately, these 2 pages were the exception to what should have been a much better book. There are quite a few editor's mistakes - including a picture of Orion that is printed backwards. I found some of the information helpful, but the errors and simple mistakes were so much of a distraction as to preclude my suggesting this book to anyone.

I HAVE READ ALOT OF ASTRONOMY BOOKS LATELY AND I WOULD LIKE TO SAY HOW MUCH I ENJOYED THIS BOOK. THIS BOOK COVERS ALOT FOR ASTRONMERS WHO CANNOT GET OUT OF THE CITY AND HAVE TO PUT UP ALOT WITH LOUSY SEEING CONDITIONS, THIS BOOK EXPLAINS HOW CERTAIN TELESCOPES WORK BETTER FOR SUBURBAN SITES VERSUS SCOPES FOR CITY FOLKS. THE BOOK ALSO GOES INTO DETAIL ABOUT HOW BY USING CERTAIN FILTERS WE CAN HOPE TO DO BETTER AT A CERTAIN SITE. A REALLY GOOD BOOK FOR THE AMATUER WHO WANTS TO GET THE MOST FROM HIS TELESCOPE.
