Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Introductory Book.......2007-02-10

Covers basketball fundamentals and team coaching. Many great drills. Best suited for the younger teams - but a wonderful starting place for coaching youth basketball.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book for a beginner coach.......2007-01-16

It was my first time coaching basketball. I coached 1st graders. I coached because nobody else volunteered to do it. With that in mind this book was perfect. It has all the basics you need to understand the game and it provides planned practices according to players age.
If you are ever in my situation with little knowledge of the game and forced to coach a kids team, I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good for beginning coaches of young children.......2006-12-15

I bought 4 basketball coaching books for my husband when he signed up to coach our son's Kindergarten basketball team. He has never coached basketball before. This is the only book he wanted to keep. He uses it to come up with basic drills and general coaching tips. It's good. If you buy only one, I'd recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars A PRACTICAL AND QUICK STUDY GUIDE.......2005-01-26

I played a lot of basketball before taking on coaching my 6 year olds' team, but I had never coached. I digested the basics of this book in about an hour and it was a roadmap to get me started. I keep reading and using it as the season progresses. Very very good for first-time coaches for kids leagues of about 5-13 years old.

5 out of 5 stars Only One Book Needed.......2004-12-31

I struggled looking for a book written for the experienced youth coach who doesn't know much about basketball. I coach four youth sports, but I never played organized basketball. I was at a loss for drills, plays and defensive philosophies. This book gave me a huge head start and Coach Faucher's style is easy and right for the kids. I enjoy planning and running my basketball practices far more than any other sport now. Thanks Coach Faucher. Do you have one for football, . . baseball, . . soccer??????

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for True Game Hunters.......2007-01-09

Very well written recipes and the stories are awesome - both Ted and Shemane's. This is a must have for the sportsman who enjoys the "spoils of his kill"

5 out of 5 stars Kill It & Grill it .......2006-11-03

Book in excellent condition. Fast delivery. My son, the hunter, loved it.

4 out of 5 stars More than just a cookbook.......2006-03-23

I bought this book mostly for the recipes. It is full of the "philosophy according to Ted" (which I love by the way). The book may leave you wanting more if all you want is a wild game cookbook. I do have to say that the recipes are excellent. My kids beg for the Deer Stroganoff. It is also one of my all-time favorite dishes to eat with the deer that I harvest. I have tried several recipes from the book and all were accurate and very tasty. Thanks to Uncle Ted for creating more than a cookbook - I read from it while I am cooking.

5 out of 5 stars Reading This Book is a Meal in Itself.......2005-12-28

I don't hunt and haven't yet prepared big game dishes, but I'm always on the lookout for new recipes with which to expand my repertoire. This book made me resolve to take up cooking big game.

But I don't know if that's necessary. Ted's descriptions of preparing and eating big game are so savory, eating this book is like enjoying a multi-course big game meal!

A superbly-written cookbook. Ted Nugent is a very gifted writer; perhaps that is his true gift.

5 out of 5 stars A one-of-a-kind cookbook.......2005-06-27

Love him or hate him, the rock & roll legend Ted Nugent is probably the most outspoken advocate for "blood sports" today. And when he turns to the domestic side of hunting -- the preparation and cooking of wild game meat -- you'll find it a lot harder to hate him because you'll love the dishes he prepares and the way he talks about them.

The attitude of this book is "Life is a BBQ" (a direct Nugent quote), and most of the 22 chapters are followed by one or more recipes. Underlying the cooking theme is Nugent's reverence for wildlife and his unapologetic explanation of what it takes for wildlife to thrive in the modern world. Nugent argues that habitat destruction, not the hunter, poses the greatest threat to wildlife; that the cruelty of nature offers no reason for man not to participate; that hunters are the greatest conservationists; and that wildlife is a renewable resource. These are truths that hunters should shout from the mountaintops.

Kill It & Grill It is worth having in your kitchen. It's a unique cookbook for sure.

Book Description

"What does Paul Long say about it?" is the question often asked by most serious trainers. Recently revised with new photographs and format, Training Pointing Dogs highlights the sage guidance of this master dog trainer. In simple question-and-answer format, Long answers the questions most asked by trainers, professional and amateur alike.

Should I try to train my dog myself? Do I need to use a whistle? How do I deal with a dog who sulks after correction? When should I breed my male dog? How do I stop my dog from barking at night without cause? What should I do if my dog will point a dead bird but not pick up and retrieve it?

Paul Long's answers to these questions are practical and filled with a good sense and subtle, wry humor of a wily veteran. His answer to the last question above is a delightful example: "Retrieving is a pretty sight and desirable. Elsewhere in the book you will find suggestions for encouraging your dog to retrieve. But if you have no success, remember that it is a rare sight to see a man point a bird. However, many men have a back strong enough to lean down and pick up a bird that a dog has located and pointed dead." (6 X 9, 112 pages, b&w photos)

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Cigars to the nose.......2007-06-12

This book is the worst training guide I have ever read. Suggested training techniques, such as applying burning cigars and cigarette lighters to a dogs nostril, are unnecessary, cruel, and illegal in most countries. I am a South African field trialist and have acted as field steward and learner judge, and can confidently state that if even the more reasonable of the techniques advocated in this book were applied at any Field Trial club or trial (or organized hunt) in South Africa the handler would be summarily expelled, his dogs confiscated, and he would be reported to the police. Ironically, most of the techniques suggested are sure to be counterproductive and break the dogs spirit. Pointers and setters do require a certain amount of discipline, but respond far better to positive reinforcement.

There are a number of far better training guides, which will provide you with a wide ranging yet responsive dog. Probably the best of these is a book entitled "Dog Breaking", written by a General W.N Hutchinson in 1850. Despite the title, the General advocates what later came to be termed positive reinforement and writes that "(The) brutal usage of a fine high couraged dog (by) Men who had a strong arm and a hard heart to punish - but no temper and no head to instruct (has) made my blood boil." He would probably have used a horsewhip on Paul Long.

5 out of 5 stars Good fundamentals for training .......2006-12-29

I bought this book on Amazon and literally read the whole text in about an hour.
It offers solid advice that is based on fundamental techniques to training a
pointer. I have applied SOME of the techniques to the training of my new Vizsla
puppy with solid results. He is coming along very well. If you notice....I used
the word SOME. Readers don't have to do everything Long writes about. The author
writes about what has worked for him in the past and works the majority of time.
What works for Long may or may not work with your dog. With this book, a few
DVD's on training, hours of time and patience working with your dog, you should
be successful. Just remember, Rome wasn't built in a day..training your dog should be approached the exact same way.

2 out of 5 stars There are better birddog books available........2001-03-27

This book is an o.k. read and offers some good information if you don't mind sifting through the outdated advice. (First Copyright in 1974).

2 out of 5 stars Buy only if you plan to Hunt birds.......2001-02-18

Had I known that the book was written for bird hunters I would have saved myself the trouble.

5 out of 5 stars a book on dogs that makes perfect sense to dog owners.......1999-11-23

Paul Long has hit a home run, hole in one, he has put all the confusing professional dog training instructions in plain language and condenced form. It is written in easy to understand, interesting and logical steps for amateur trainers and dog owners to follow. I really got excited and took my pup thru this and have made her into a really good, trained dog. Other books left me wondering about their methods and I just couldnt commit to those training methods. Paul Long has connected with me, if youve never found the right training book, try this one.

Book Description

Nothing is more evocative of the Texas outdoors than the whistled call of the bobwhite. While the familiar two-note greeting is now just a memory for most of us who live in the state's growing urban sprawl, this bird is an economic commodity on par with crops and livestock in some regions of Texas.

Three other native species of quail also inhabit Texas. Like the northern bobwhite, the scaled quail is significant as a game bird. The other two species, Gambel's quail and Montezuma quail, are found in limited areas of southwestern Texas and represent an important indicator of forest, rangeland, and habitat conditions.

Texas Quails presents the first complete assessment of the four species of quail found in this vast state. Experts describe each of them and examine all geographic regions of the state for historical and current population trends, habitat status, and research needs. These experts also discuss management practices, hunting issues, economics, and diseases.

With the recent creation of the Texas Quail Conservation Initiative, this volume provides a timely and comprehensive view of quail science and stewardship.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Texas quails: Ecology and Management .......2007-09-13

This is an excellent book on all Texas quails (bobwhites, scaled quail, Gambel's quail and the little-known Montezuma/Mearn's/harlequin quail). The ecoregional approach is detailed and informative. Species accounts are also detailed, referring not just to the Texas aspects but also other regional studies where relevant. The endemic Mearn's quail is especially interesting since this species is little studied. I rate this book as necessary to any quail enthusiast.

5 out of 5 stars WOW! .......2007-04-13

This encyclopedic, thoroughly referenced, well-organized, well-written compendium is the best single resource for quail hunters, wildlife and range managers, with appeal and utility for those beyond Texas who care about these fascinating species. Incredibly low-cost to boot. Highly recommended.

Defence is the hardest part of the wonderful world of bridge. As in all their books, these writers offer tips that are not only first rate but understandable for the accomplished player as well as someone trying to learn the game and everyone in between.

4 out of 5 stars Bridge Defender.......2007-03-19

It is an excellent book. The subject is difficult to define a set
of rules. However, this book tries perhaps too hard to force a variety of conventions which leads to some confusion. Nevertheless, the book is very useful and should be on the bookself with other bridge books.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Guide to Bird Dog Training.......2002-03-06

This book is GREAT! My husband got me interested in training bird dogs after going on a quail hunt recently. I reviewed the books on Amazon that were available on the subject and chose this one to get an idea of what bird dog training would entail. I was skeptical that I could actually do this. I am hooked. This book made so much since to me! I am ready to get started with a puppy today. It is a lot of work I know but this book is an excellent way to get started. I know it will be an excellent resource after I get my pup. I have talked with a few folks that actually raise and train pointing dogs and they say I'm on the right track. I highly recommend this book.

2 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Guide to Bird Dog Training.......2002-02-28

I ordered this book in hopes of receiving an up to date training book. I was somewhat disappointed. The book looks like it is a new updated training book; and even states inside that it contains the authors older material with new updated training methods, but I found it to be only dated marerial. The pictures are from the 70's, and not good ones at that. I do feel like the methods would work for a person training a pointer; I was trying to obtain information in the training of a lab for upland game, and this book was lacking in that reguards. If you are looking for a newer material, you may want to check other sources. I am trying The Labrador Shooting Dog next.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Bird Dog Book.......2002-02-27

An excellent oveview for starting a pointing dog puppy. Uses techniques from various trainers. Highly recommend.. It works too!

      Book Description

American bird hunting throughout the 20th century is interwoven in the fabric of a developing nation, with a rich heritage and colorful traditions. And celebrated outdoor writer, dog trainer and naturalist Ben Williams has been in the thick of it. American Wingshooting is an elegant and beautifully photographed celebration of upland bird hunting now and as it once existed, with an emphasis on contemporary conditions and techniques for what many consider "The Second Golden Age" of bird hunting in America. Little escapes the author's sharp eye for detail with pen or camera as he discusses eighteen species of American game birds, their habits and habitat, the dogs that hunt them, and the guns best suited for each species. With introductory essays by the venerable Charlie Waterman, American Wingshooting is the new textbook for the growing legion of American wingshooters. 180 color photographs.

I first happened upon this book while engaged in my day-to-day duties in the shelves of the Augsburg College Library in Minneapolis where I worked as a student library assistant in the mid-70's. As I began paging through it, I began to realize that I had never seen a "nature" book like this before. The book and the characters in it were at once bold, daring, mesmerizing and weird. You just have to read it.

3 out of 5 stars The end of the big game - A book to protect today'swildlife.......2004-01-06

Published in 1965, the book is the most famous book of Peter Beard. The book is shoking as most photos are pictures of dead animals, it is definitely not a book to look at before your safari. Black and white pictures are excellent. Sadly, the last pages are only photos of elephant's carcasses (too much?). The Beard's touch is a book full of old illustration, tiny pics, small and odd drawings and detailed texts - most of them taken from the British Museum. The book is about the Old Africa and text about Mt Kenya, the Man-eaters of Tsavo, Nairobi and Karen Blixen are not easy and you must have a knowledge of Kenyan history to understand them fully. This book is essential for any African collection as it has shocked and marked history.

5 out of 5 stars Old Africa brought to life.......2001-11-11

An excellent book for those that can handle the truth. It shows what will happen when nature is left to manage itself and what happens when men don't control themselves. It's about hard times and history-a way of life long forgotten. If you are a product of the spoonfed Disney age, then you'll find this book shocking. It may well be your first taste of truth about wild animals, wild places, and the true spirit of man. This book is about Old Africa and should not be judged with today's politically correct eye. It is an account of things happened in a forgotten time, and a lost way of life.

      5 out of 5 stars Old Africa-brought to life.......2001-11-11

It's a very real look at Old Africa. It shows the truth of man's bad luck, bad descisions, greed, and life filled with hard times. It shows nature in it's true self, not some Disney version of happy animals dancing around. This is an excellent book and should serve as a wake up call for the multitudes of Americans who believe the garbage that is spoon fed to them on their televisions. It may be well more than most readers can handle, because the truth is not sugar coated here.

5 out of 5 stars A sad and compelling book.......2001-07-07

Having been introduced to his work at a gallery exhibit in New York, I bought this book which contains pretty much the same sad pictures. Really an amazing point of view of wildlife in Africa, might shock some with graphic pictures of carcasses, particularly one of a zebra with its hide stripped off. What I cannot figure out ultimately is where Peter Beard stands on the issue - although the big message appears to me that he opposes the killings, which is why he films the hideousness of it all, he seems to have personally participated in the hunts that he photographs, killing the same animals. He is very elusive about his personal viewpoint, seems kind of snobbish to me.

4 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings about it, overall a good book.......2005-06-18

I have mixed feelings about this book - it is a book packed with info & I imagine it would be very helpful to somebody who had never lived in Arizona & who wasn't already familiar with our native birds. So, if you don't know what the heck a Gambel's Quail is or what they look like, I'd imagine this would be the book for you. On the other hand, as someone who grew up in Tucson I can tell you that you'll still be a long way from finding any birds w/ this book in hand. It has general areas where birds can be found - but nothing that helped me find any more birds in the field than I found have found anyway...as a traveling wingshooter you'd still need another resource to help tell you exactly where to go (whether it be the guy at the gas station in Sonoita or a buddy who hunts doves near Picacho, etc)

I HAVE NEVER READ A BOOK WITH MORE FEELING, KNOWLEDGE, AND JUST PLAIN "SMARTS" AS THIS BOOK BY "WEB" PARTON. I"M A VERY EXPERIENCED HUNTER AND SHOTGUN PERSON AND COULD NOT BELEIVE I WAS READING A BOOK WITH THE REAL TRUTH ABOUT ALL ASPECTS OF THE HUNTING, GUNS, AND SHELLS REQUIRED. MOST BOOKS SHOW THEIR IGNORANCE IN A FEW PAGES, THIS BOOK I COULD NOT PUT DOWN, IT'S THE TRUTH--READ THIS BOOK. PARTON IS MY HERO.

      5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Read!.......1999-11-24

This book establishes Web as the authority on Arizona wingshooting. If you own a shotgun you need this book.

5 out of 5 stars Exellent guide for Arizona bird hunting.......1999-08-13

For anyone planning a trip for bird hunting in Arizona this book is the Bible. Up to date and precise on maps, roads, and habitat. I've hunted Arizona quail for 12 years and found his information to be right on the money. I've even picked up a few pointers from his book. Well worth having this book in your arsenal to hunt the very cagey desert quail.
