This book is part of a series of guides designed for adolescents interested in natural history and nature. The books are an excellent introduction to the Rocks and Minerals, Birds, Wildflowers, and Insects for children aged 8-18. Each guide is appropriately sized to fit in a field vest pocket. Readers who remember previous versions of these field guides from the 1970s that were dull and overly detailed will be pleasantly surprised. These books are arguably the most beautifully photographed and laid out field guides yet published for young people. Each book has an introductory section filled with interesting facts, descriptions of early naturalists, definitions of many of the terms used in the book, and a guide to using the field guide portion of the book. Best of all, the books also come equipped with laminated field "cheat sheet" cards, for quick identification while on the go, in any kind of weather. Each field guide features 50 common species with photos and brief descriptions of many more regionally occurring birds. Brief discussions of threatened and endangered species are particularly valuable. Great first guides for children and adults with limited natural history background.

The guide has excellent photographs and descriptions of common birds, and a few that are not so common. The photos have enough detail to distinguish tail patterns, eye patches and other features. Many national field guides are often East coast-centric, but this bird book would be very useful in all regions of the United States. An excellent beginning birder guidebook, for children and adults. --Merri Martz

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-10-13

I love this little book. It is so simple compared to the more extensive versions we have (where you can't find what you're looking for because of the sheer number of birds in the book). Some of the pics in this book are even better than our other bird field guides that cost way more money. It is simple yet provides several alternate photos to give enough info on similar species. I am very pleased with it and look forward to using with the kids for many years to come. Great price, too!

1 out of 5 stars Fell Apart the First Day!.......2005-08-09

The content of this book is great, but the binding is JUNK! The whole purpose of a field guide is for it to be a handy reference tool you can flip through frequently. Too bad we now have to shuffle through a pile of loose pages to get at the information. Big disappointment.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent guide despite areas for improvement........1999-07-11

This is, as the professional reviews profess, indeed a much more appropriate book for younger readers than the more encyclopedic, primarily textual guides on the market. The majority of hte book is devoted to a field guide of 50 different common North American birds organized by general shape and habitat (wading birds, ground birds, hawks & eagles, etc.). Each bird is shown in a large color photograph with two or three other similar species given smaller thumbnail photos and descriptions (adding another 125 birds). Although the guide does a good job of providing useful annotations by way or a map showing range and habitat by season, an identification capsul providing details useful in identifying the bird, and a bit about its behavior and diet, it misses two obvious points of interest, particularly to younger readers: a picture of a nest with eggs and a photo or graphic of a feather. Explorers coming across a nest or feathers and wondering what bird made it will find the guide of minimal assistance. Generally, a book well worth it. Hopefully, the next edition will be even better.

5 out of 5 stars My son reads it every night!.......2007-01-18

I looked around a lot for a bird book for my son/his dad who love to watch the birds together. I purchased this after reading another review so I felt that I should give my own. Considering how difficult this book was to find, it was definetly worth the wait. My son is 21 months and just loves reading the "Birdee Book". The pictures are beautiful and the written text is short and sweet which is perfect for young children. I also feel that it is doing a great job of teaching him the difference between birds in the sense that there are ducks, geese, birds, etc.. and prior to this book all of them were just "Birds". I would recommend this for any child above 18 months.

    3 out of 5 stars Little Information.......2007-01-11

The book is colorful. Names of birds are included for indentification. However, there is little information on each page which makes it less educational and more a picture book than some.

5 out of 5 stars A great first book about birds.......2006-04-03

This is such a pretty simple book. The pictures are lovely and the writing is perfect for the youngest children. This book is best for kids between 3 and 6 years old.

    5 out of 5 stars delightful book.......2006-03-11

I bought this book for my granddaughters. They have loved it from the 2 yr. old to the 8 year old. I enjoyed it,too. The sounds brought memories of birds I'm familiar with.

5 out of 5 stars Best Family Reference Ever.......2007-07-21

This book has become very popular with our friends and family because it gives accurate color drawings with an easy-to-read, informative text. It has been updated twice over the years. A great, compact gift for for both children (7+) and adults.

    3 out of 5 stars Disappointment.......2007-02-26

The original of this book, in hardcover, is fabulous. Unfortunately, this edition is not true to the colors of the birds. Compare for instance the Indigo Bunting in this updated edition with the Indigo Bunting in the original Hardcover Version (not the original paperback version which is just as bad as this). We have Indigo Buntings at our feeders every year. Their color is so vivid, it's breathtaking. But you wouldn't know it by looking at this poor substitute for the original book.

5 out of 5 stars Golden Guide to Birds.......2007-01-10

I already have this book and use it often. The information is written understandingly and the pictures are very good. When my son requested a bird book, I immediately went for this one.

4 out of 5 stars Guides for the Rest of Us.......2007-01-10

I don't suppose dedicated birders would have much use for this guide, but for those of us who think it would be fun to be able to name the birds that live in or migrate through our neighborhoods, this is a wonderful resource. For the parent with curious children, Herbert S. Zim's guides are indispensable.

These hip-pocket sized books are nicely designed and simple enough so that children can use them on their own after just a little guidance. At the same time, though, they offer plenty of solid information. The illustrations are clear, copious, and attractive.

If you are looking for a basic guide to common birds, this is a perfect choice. Also, be sure to see the other Golden Guides by Herbert S. Zim.

4 out of 5 stars Still a Solid Beginning Guide for Young Birders.......2006-04-03

Zim's Golden Guide series was my standard back when I was very young. I eagerly awaited the next title and one of the earliest books was the "Golden Guide to Birds." While in no way a definitive field guide it did (and does) introduce a young birder to the most common birds found in the United States. The illustrations are charming and are among those I remember with fondness from my early days of interest in natural history.
The paintings of the common loon, the black and turkey vultures, the red-tailed hawk and others, were especially memorable and I now realize that they set the tone for my later ability to identify most common birds without a guide. I certainly looked at them enough when I was around twelve years old!

In the current edition there have been some minor changes, such as adding the cattle egret, but it is essentially the same book that I used in the 1950s.

If you are thinking of giving a young naturalist a good beginning bird guide, this would be it. For the price this is the best beginners book going.

Birds, Nest ,and Eggs Mel Boring Reading Level 4.8

Birds, Nests, and Eggs is an excellent book. It is great for a book report or just to read for fun. It is about birds and what kind of tree they nest in. It also tells you what kind of calls they make. It shows you how long it takes for the eggs to hatch and when they learn how to fly. They show you how the birds trick you. They show you how to do some experiments. Again I strongly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent learning tool!.......2001-01-23

I purchased 5 books of this series for my five year old daughter for Christmas, as she wanted a "field guide" like her older sisters when exploring our 45 acres of woods. After reviewing these books before giving them, we decided to use them as part of our science program for our home school. These books have bright and colorful pictures, short accurate explanations of the animal, their habitat, eating habits, and even some of the popular anecdotes that go along with the animal. (For example, the myth about the stripes on the wooly bear caterpillar in relation to the length of winter) It has the appropriate warning for studying certain animals and tips on studying nature in general. What we enjoy most is that many of these animals can be found in our back yard to furthur study. Each book deals with three types of animal, such as Caterpillars,Bugs, and Butterflies. They are separated into sections dealing with each type. At the end of the section is a wonderful hands-on project the child can basically do on their own within the recommended age group (9-12) or with some assistance for a younger age group like my daughter. This particular one is a little different in that instead of having three sections, it is one section dealing with each type of bird, incorporating their nests and eggs, with the projects interspersed throughout. My 5 year old begs us to read these books to her and loves the projects. I highly recommend this book and others in the series for those who want their children to learn about nature and how to respect it.

5 out of 5 stars Me and my 3 year old love it.......2000-11-03

I was so glad I bought this book for my kids. My 3 year old and I look at it nearly every night (it's his first choice). After only a few times, he was able to help me name all of the birds. He has even recognized one or two in our yard. It's an easy read, with great illustrations, a great book for beginning bird watchers!

5 out of 5 stars Understanding the Bird.......2003-02-01

I've read all of Murakami's fiction that has been released in english, so i am interested in anything that analyzes his fiction. This little 96 page book does quite a good job. It starts off with a short itroduction about Murakami himself. It is pretty short, and many fans would probably like to know more about Murakami, but it does help the reader to understand better from where Murakami is coming from and how his own personality is put into his characters. The second part of the book takes up many themes such as sexuality and violence. It gives the reader a higher understanding of Murakami's characters, and gives the reader an insight of what aspects that each character represents. The third part of the book is about the reception of the book in japan and in the rest of the world. This is a nice little book for a Murakami fan to read after he or she has finished reading _the wind-up bird chronicle_

    4 out of 5 stars a great companion piece..........2002-02-26

This series of books are not intended to be definitive guides (at under 100 pages how could they be) but are put together nicely as further reading for fans of the works they cover.

WUBC is one of my favourite books and this guide contains a great deal of interesting information and analysis on the novel. There are some fascinating quotes from Murakami himself and a number of interesting angles on the reading of the text.

It took just one train journey to read and I enjoyed it a great deal. Highly recommended for fans of Murakami.

5 out of 5 stars perfect for fans.......2002-02-05

OK, I should admit straight up that I'm biased - The Wind-up Bird is my favourite novel. So I'm hardly able to give this guidebook a neutral, detached review. In fact, I'm amazed that someone has published this - are there enough of us fanatics to make this kind of thing profitable?? I hope so, as I see that Mr Strecher has another book coming out shortly! Anyhow, this is a great place to start. It was good to read about Murakami's views on other Japanese writers, his student days, and his falling into a ditch at the age of three. If you've read the novel, that explains a lot! I thought that Strecher's analysis of the novel was wonderfully accurate, although as he admits himself, he has only scratched the surface of it. Especially fascinating was the section about the reviews the novel received - astonishing how many of these missed the point. In short, if you love this novel then I think you'll like this book. And if you haven't read this novel, please go and read it. Now.

5 out of 5 stars In-depth coverage of raptors for young readers -- The best book on raptors for this age group I've seen..........2006-08-17

...and I've seen a lot of them! (maybe 30 or more different children's books on raptors and birds)

Many bird and raptor books for this age group are very basic and fairly sparse in detail, probably because they're written based on the assumption that most young readers would be overwhelmed by too much information. But my raptor-loving 7-year-old son poured over the library copy of Raptor! for many weeks, checking it out several times.

After spotting a bird of prey in the sky a few times, he grew interested in raptors. Within a month, he had checked out every book on raptors in the children and juvenile section of our local library. Most of the other raptor library books were read only once and put aside. Not so with Raptor! -- there were plenty of interesting details for my son to soak up.

We eventually invested in his own copy, which he still enjoys re-reading 2 years later. All in all, an excellent book for this topic and age group.

5 out of 5 stars Suitable for both reports and leisure browsing.......2005-03-04

Here young readers will be vry nicely introduced to raptors: the hawks, eagles, turkey vultures and more who keep our word clean by hunting and scavenging. Raptor! presents a lovely "kid friendly view" guidebook to raptors by the team of Christyna M. Laubach, Rene Laubach, Charles W.G. Smith to birds of prey which packs in activities, observation tips, sidebars of facts, and plenty of color photos to encourage young naturalists in grades 4-6. Suitable for both reports and leisure browsing, Raptors! is very highly recommended for school and community library shelves.

5 out of 5 stars for raptor-lovers of all ages.......2002-12-12

I've been teaching raptor biology for two decades to all ages of humans, and this is the most thorough, attractively designed, and accurate kids-oriented book on birds of prey I've seen. Kudos to the Laubachs, who obviously did their homework, and produced both an activity guide and a reference book on all the diurnal and nocturnal birds of prey of the US and Canada. If you have a young raptor watcher in your life, Raptor! would be outstanding for ages 7 to 17, however, the photos and excellent natural history would render it enjoyable for all ages.

5 out of 5 stars My neighborhood birds.......2002-08-27

This book is a fun way to learn about birds. My neighbor has a bird feeder and now I can name all of the different kinds of birds I see. I especially liked writing down my notes and learning about how the different bills tell you what a bird eats! This book will help me out a lot in my outdoor education class this year...

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Learning Experience and never Boring.......2001-08-11

As a 40 year old adult, I purchased this book because of my interest in birds and to review the content for my two nieces. This book turned out to be an exciting learning tool that completely held my interest. The reader is drawn into the content of the book as you go outside into the fresh air and interact with nature. What a wonderful job the author has done with the photos and the outlined activities. You can use this book over and over again, as each time you go outside, something is always different.

I am looking forward to reading further works from this author. I am sure my nieces will find this book as enjoyable as I have.
