Book Description

Bird watching is America's second most popular hobby after gardening. According to a recent survey, approximately 63 million Americans report that they watch and feed birds at home. With its beautiful four-color layout, The Backyard Bird Feeder's Bible is the ideal guide for beginning to intermediate bird watchers. And author Sally Roth's reassuring and friendly voice make this book a standout among the many more academic-style bird books currently on the market. Each colorful section is arranged alphabetically and addresses birds from each region of the country-even explaining the different food requirements for birds in different regions. Roth helps readers cut the costs of their favorite activity with economical tips throughout, from buying less expensive seed like cracked corn to using food leftovers as winter treats. Readers will delight in the color photos of the most popular feeder birds and will enjoy projects for making feeders, food mixtures, and 'food crafts,' such as birdseed wreaths.

5 out of 5 stars Help! He Won't Give Back My Book!.......2006-08-15

I barely got to look at the thing!

I made the mistake of allowing my young nephew to glance through it a few days ago. The next thing I know he takes it home with him and won't bring it back to me. (Well, he 'would' because he's that kind of guy... but I think I am going to allow him to keep it.)

Apparently this book had the remarkable effect of sparking in him a sudden interest in the hobby of attracting and feeding birds.

Actually, all summer long we have been visited at our little place in the country by birds of all sorts and we have been feeding them everyday so they wouldn't get bored and go away, but my nephew didn't have any interest in them... that is, not until I let him look at this book.

As I said, I did not really get to look at this book, but let's base my 5 star review on the enthusiasm it sparked in him. He says it is a great book because the information within is very interesting and very in-depth. He also loves the plentiful beautiful pictures which helps keep him attracted all the more to the subject matter.

I am very pleased that a child growing up in today's sterile electronically-obsessed society can still find something very natural and positive to invest his time and interest in. Aren't you?

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT ADDITION TO YOUR BIRD LIBRARY.......2006-06-29

This one is just filled with excellent ideas. After years of birding you would think there would be no new ideas...wrong! I picked up quite a lot from this book. It is well organized, easy to use and easy to read and understand. I am glad I received it as a gift and recommend you get a copy if this is where your interests are. Overall, recommend this one highly.

3 out of 5 stars Great Book cheaply made.......2005-12-18

The information contained in the book is great, one of the best bird books I own. To bad the publisher went the cheap way and produced a book using the hot glue binding process as opposed to a stitched binding. My copy has fallen apart!

1 out of 5 stars Not well organized.......2005-12-07

I found this book to be very confusing. It is organized alphabetically... which makes no sense. There is no way to know what you need to know until you know what you need to know. It should be called the Bird book encyclopedia. A much much better book is the Audobon Backyard Birdwatcher. This book is not very colorful or engaging. I returned it.

5 out of 5 stars Full of information.......2005-09-14

This book has answered so many questions for me. Reading this book is like talking with a friend who knows everything about birds and wants me to know it all too! The way it is set up alphabetically makes for an easy search and the pictures and diagrams are excellent. I will now have a more organized yard and happier birds.

5 out of 5 stars -Mourning Doves mate for life-.......2002-03-28

This is one of those books that you pick up intending to find a quick answer to a specific question and, before you know what's happened, you've become wrapped up in reading several pages. The book is beautifully done, useful, and very pleasant to read.

The first section provides general information about feeding, housing and gardening for the birds. In the second section, we learn about courtship, baby birds, territory, and migration. The third section gives specific data on individual bird species, and finally, a small appendix provides lists of favorite foods, egg identification, and habitat requirements.

Here are a few bird facts that I thought were particularly interesting: Mourning Doves mate for life and are excellent parents. - The Kildeer is very unusual because they often make their nests on unpaved driveways which is confusing because the eggs look like small pieces of gravel. - The beautiful Indigo Bunting frequently uses the same nest by just making yearly repairs. - One very unpopular bird is the Brown-Headed Cowbird. They like to lay their eggs in the nests of other birds and leave all of the work and rearing to another mother. - The Winter Wren builds several nests which he shows to a possible mate for approval. The female then picks her favorite nest. Unwilling to let the other nests go to waste, he shows the remaining nests to a second female and ends up with two families.

If you enjoy feeding the birds, you'll love this book.

4 out of 5 stars Makes Bringing Birds to YOU Easy.......2000-08-10

This book is a great guide to backyard birding. It's 320 pages long and the last 100 or so pages is an extensive identification chapter featuring full color drawings of each bird, a description of its range and a lengthy description of its eating habits, courtship, housing and habitat preferences. The Appendix is one of the most useful parts of the book - it includes charts listing each bird's egg color and size, housing each bird will accept, migration patterns and food preferences for the birds. This book ensures you will get the birds you want, when you want - it even tells which birds may interbreed and how to avoid quarreling among feisty songbirds. It includes low-budget solutions to most of the "high-cost" bird expenses, and explains in great detail the proper storage of food. This book is undoubtedly the best resource birders have for attracting yard birds. Although the females in each species could be shown in better detail - only in the cases in which the sexes are drastically different are the females shown, - it is still an excellent resource from experienced "backyard birders". If you plan on attracting, feeding and nesting birds, get this book. Your success is assured.

4 out of 5 stars Backyard Bird-Lover's Guide.......2000-05-05

Fun and exciting - this book will show you the 3 essentials your yard needs to become a favorite with as wide a variety of birds that is possible for your area. I especially liked it's format, simple and easy to follow, it takes you through planning/planting, feeding stations, the best food for each bird - and you're ready to sit back and enjoy your backyard habitat! An updated replacement for my old standby book, The Backyard Bird Watcher by George Harrison.

    5 out of 5 stars A bird-lovers must have!.......2004-01-21

Jan Mahnken has put together a book that will be of great help to anyone who would like to have a backyard full of birds. Whether you are new to the hobby of feeding and watching birds or are an old pro this book will be of great help. If you are a new birder this book is a must for it is well written and easy to understand. In the long run will save you a lot of money as it will help you decide on the kinds of feed you need and what will just be wasted. For the old pro, the clear division of subjects and easy to read writing style will help you add to the knowledge you already have.

The chapter on nest boxes is one of the best in the book and includes plans for building almost any type of birdhouse that you choose. There are also sections on bird behavior, nesting, and identifying different kinds of birds. The last section of the book provides little biographies of various kinds of birds you may be able to attract to your backyard. The only negative I found in this book was that the author tried to describe the ranges of the birds profiled instead of providing a map. Living in the mid-south I am relatively close to several ranges and sometimes found Ms. Mahnken's descriptions of range limits somewhat hard to follow. Finally, there is an index that will help you immensely in trying to attract certain kinds of birds and in identifying their nests.

I am extremely glad I bought this book, as it has already been a big help to me. It will hold a prominent place in my library.

This is a necessary book if you desire to handfeed wild birds. It is extremely hard to find this book, anywhere.Inside is a step by step guide to handfeeding your backyard birds,it is very useful and in a way, somewhat easy to do by following this book. This was one of the books I have looked most forward too in a long time, and I'm glad I now have it.If handfeeding your wild backyard birds is one of your things to do, I highly recommend this book as almost a necessity.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and practical.......2004-11-17

I recently ordered this book and was inspired to try it for myself. I enjoyed the photography and the author's anecdotes about his own experiences feeding birds. The book offers practical information and put together with a little patience on my part, I was able to get some chickadees into my hand within 2 1/2 weeks.

    5 out of 5 stars A beautiful book.......2002-02-01

If you are looking for a book that will teach you how to hand-feed back yard birds and if you would enjoy poignant anecdotes about birds that have come to the author's hand to feed year after year, you will love this book!
The photographs are gorgeous, the text is clear, organized and interesting, and you can't help love the gentle, friendly, kind man who writes about his love of birds and hand-feeding them.
Another good point about this book is ...it works! I followed Hugh Wiberg's suggestions and with patience and practise, won the trust of a dear little nuthatch. He comes to my hand every time I go the park.
The book, Hand-feeding Backyard Birds, started me on this hobby and taught me how to be successful. It is a wonderful book!

5 out of 5 stars Great Present for You or your Favorite Birder!.......2001-11-12

There are some things that make you just stop and stare in amazement. Seeing someone in the middle of a park calmly hand-feeding chickadees is one of those things. Chickadees aren't tame - they fly away from feeders when you approach! And yet, ANYBODY can learn how to hand-feed these and other birds.

If you're interested, definitely grab this book. It has gorgeous photos, and simple, step-by-step instructions. It tells you when to try this for best results, how go to about it, which sorts of birds respond best, how they tend to act, what they like to eat, and much, much more.

Definitely a great gift for any birder, and once your birder (or you!) learns the technique, it'll be a present that lasts them a lifetime!

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book!.......2001-08-06

This book is a lot of fun - while also being realistic. The author tells you up front that you need to be patient, because it takes time to build the trust of birds. But once they do its such a joy! Reading through the book was inspiring and then in the winter I just bundled up and got out there. It was calming while at the same time exciting as the birds came closer and closer. Bundle up though - the best time to do this with the birds is winter since they're a bit short on food and it gets chilly out there.

It is estimated that more than 63 million Americans feed wild birds and spend more than 2 billion dollars a year on birdseed, feeders, and other equipment. Habitat loss is a critical issue for wildlife everywhere, and for birds in particular human help may become (or already be) critical to the survival of some species. Mathew Tekulsky provides information on bird biology, calls, and geographic ranges to help identify birds in your area. He explains how to plan and plant a bird-friendly garden, recipes for birdseed mixtures and nectars, ways to provide year-round water for birds, placement of bird houses, and even advice on photographing birds that visit your birdfeeder.

Tekulsky writes of his delight and awe of birds, "All these experiences connect me with the rhythms of the natural world, and if you start a backyard bird garden of your own, you, too, will enjoy all the benefits of having the birds around you." This is a charming small book for bird lovers with lovely drawings and a useful index. --Mark A. Hetts

      Book Description

In this fun, informative book, Mathew Tekulsky shows you how to turn your backyard into a bird-friendly garden environment. With charming black and white illustrations throughout, this gift volume explains what plants will attract birds, how to identify the birds that appear, what they like to eat, and how to provide them food and water year-round. Backyard birdfeeding is a hobby that millions of people feel both gives back to the world, and feeds the heart and spirit. Once the backyard space is bird friendly, the atmosphere exists to sit back, relax and enjoy the company of nature's enchanting and entertaining friends.

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to "bird fostering".......2000-05-30

The book was a good introduction to birdhouses and bird feeders for someone who is a novice. It covered the different types of feeders, houses and seed and tips on how to keep snakes and even worse squirrels out of your bird feeders. It described which birds are likely to appear during certain months. One thing that it did not cover was how to identify the different types of birds by their appearance or song. But it has definitely sparked my interest in fostering wild birds and I plan to learn the different types on my own! This book is worth your time and money.
