Another Work of Genius.......2007-09-26
Beautifully layed out, the book showcases the artwork by the Pixar guys and gals in a way that is a masterpiece in itself. Simply put.
Gorgeous conceptual art.......2007-09-01
Pixar Animation Studios are recognized the world over as leaders in the field of CG animated movies. The road from idea to movie release is a long one and before sets are modeled and textured and characters are modeled, rigged and animated, the concept work is done. This concept work is not seen in the final movie release but it is the guide for the look of the entire film. Design, color and lighting are all fleshed out in the concert art. "The Art of Ratatouille" showcases some spectacularly beautiful drawings, paintings and sculptures. It is interesting to see which concepts developed into the final movie and which fell by the wayside. And, or course, the art can also be appreciated simply for what it is. A stunningly, beautiful book.
Excellent artistic book.......2007-08-24
Very good book for people who are looking for tips in the hand draw cartoon character area. The different position of the mouse, the correct way you can draw a character make the book a very valuable tool. It is really bad that there is not much information in the 3d area and I myself bought this book much more to find 3d tips.

Pixar succeeds once again........2007-08-08
Ratatouille was one of Pixar's most finely made movies, and the art book showed the painstaking hard work that was put into it. Watch the development of the characters, lighting tests, Brad Bird's words reflecting the movie, and dozens of talented artists' sketches and paintings that made this movie what it is. The real treat for me was Dan Lee's art along with the few storyboards that really lifted my spirit.
Rest in Peace, Dan Lee.
Pixar lost a fantastic artist.

Enjoyed the broad range of life illustrated for this volume.......2007-10-12
Wow - the enormous numbers of animal life is astounding and the book clearly shows this. Unfortunately the images are quite dark and the book is very thick (you get your money's worth - image-wise), so scanning them for use in various artistic media is difficult. Therefore, I bought two of the books and plan to cut one of them up (that hurts to say for I treasure books of all types). This way I can control the scanning and modification using software to bring out details and highlight an image to my satisfaction. And finally, the classic images are impressive and I applaud the author for his selection of animals from all realms of life on earth.
Well worth it........2007-09-16
Used several of these drawings in projects. Books like this are great for those of us designers who aren't the best freehand drawers.

I was first introduced to the beautiful book a few months ago when I was looking for an illustration of an insect for a class. I knew the moment I saw it that I had to have this book for future projects. If you're looking for illustrations that will make the person looking at your work take a second look or remember what you turned in for your project... this is the book for you!

Book Description
With this lovely and informative volume, Alan Feduccia preserves the pathbreaking work of Mark Catesby, the English naturalist and illustrator who founded natural history and bird art in America. First published by UNC Press in 1985, the book features all 109 bird illustrations, 20 color plates, and the entire text from Catesby's pioneering Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahamas. Annotating Catesby's writings from a modern perspective, Feduccia discusses the perception of each species during the Colonial period, comments on its habits, and compares Catesby's observations with those of such other early naturalists as John White, John Lawson, Alexander Wilson, and John James Audubon.

An Aukful story of extinction.......2001-03-01
Ask anyone you know with even a cursory knowledge of birds and animals to name you an extinct species. After the Dodo, the Great Auk will probably be the most frequently mentioned name. The reason the story of the Auk's extinction has remained in our brains, in the recesses yes, but remembered nevertheless, is because of the sheer size and horrific destruction associated with the hunting to extinction of the bird.
The book deals not just with the hunting of these large flightless birds (think Penguin) for food but also looks at what their feathers, fat and oils were used for. Other subjects include the history of the trade, a full description of the birds appearance and it's behaviour. Although the last bird died in 1844 the story does not end with their demise. Fuller talks about the stuffed specimens and the eggs and how the greed associated with the Auk's extinction continued in the behavoir of collectors and museums.
Plenty of color illustrations. Gift for a bird lover.
The best book ever written on a single account of extinction.......2000-01-30
Fuller's book cannot possibly be surpassed on its subject, the extinction and remaining artifacts of the The Great Auk. A truly amazing book which details every stuffed auk from around the world, as well as all the egg specimens. Mostly with photographs, the history of how each specimen finally came to its current residence of display is a story in itself. Great detail is given to the obsessive collectors and dealers through the last 150 years also. Forget the price, just buy this book! Fuller's own Auk is photographed extensively in colour. Only question remaining on the subject is, What did Eric Fuller pay for his Greak Auk?"
stunning.......2000-01-27
a volume with meticulous research, and also a sad inventory of the last specimens of this extinct bird. Let us hope there won't be too many books in this serie.

Book Description
From Pixar Animation Studios, the Academy Award winning studio that brought us such blockbusters as Toy Story, Monsters, Inc., and Finding Nemo, comes The Incredibles, a hilarious, action-packed story of a family of superheroes living an underground suburban existence. The sleekly designed settings and characters were conceptualized and developed by writer/director Brad Bird and Pixar's creative team of artists, illustrators, and designers, resulting in a celluloid sensation rich with detail. The Art of The Incredibles celebrates their talent, featuring concept and character sketches, storyboards, and lighting studies, and invites readers into the elaborate creative process of animation through interviews with all the key players at Pixar. With an 8-page gatefold and fabulous color art, this stunning book the only movie tie-in book for adults will delight film-goers, artists, and animation fans alike.
Customer Reviews:
A stunning book.......2007-04-21
I saw _The Incredibles_ in the theatre, & was blown away. When it came out on DVD, I bought it immediately, & have since watched it three more times, something I've done with only a few other films of any sort.
After sitting through that delightful & well-crafted rollercoaster, what stood out most in memory was the artwork in the closing credits. And when I watched the Features & noted the artwork tacked to the walls in the studio, I needed to find out more.
The heroes of this film, for me, are the artists who created apparently most of those angular saturated-color "sketches," Lou Romano (primarily responsible for the closing-credits illustrations) & Teddy Newton (whose techniques of creating "sketches" & panels from cut-out bits of photographs). Between them, they seem to have provided half of what's in the book.
The book looks pricey until you realize that it's entirely on heavy gloss paper. I entirely recommend this to artists of any stripe (advertising, fine arts, computer rendering) & to digital renderers from programmers to detailers -- this shows you what you start with & some tantalizing little bits of evolution. And, it's simply a great bit of fun & visually amazing.
Lot's of fun!.......2007-03-20
This is a coffee-table collection of pre-production art work for "The Incredibles." If you're a big fan of the movie (like me), it's indispensible for your collection...especially if the price is right, like it was when I bought it. You won't get much in the way of the movie-type stills, so it's not for the casual fan or the kids.
Great gift!.......2007-01-10
I gave this as a present, and the gift reciever loved it so much he read it within a week of the gift-giving.
A Masterpiece In Itself.......2005-09-29
The Art of the Incredibles is an epic journey in its own right beyond the smash motion picture release from Disney and Pixar. Reading the interviews from Pixar giants like Brad Bird and John Lasseter on the impetus that began the In-cred-uh-ble (never mind) journey for the movie feels like you're sitting in a conference room at Pixar headquarters being debriefed on the joy and pain that brought an age-old story about fathers that want to be the super-heroes of their kids' dreams into a CGI medium that made its expression all the more enjoyable. The term "eye candy" doesn't even begin to talk about the content of this book, as collage after collage and drawing after drawing illustrative the evolutionary process employed by Pixar and other bleeding-edge animation studios to breath life into characters that in turn produce a realistic, enjoyable, and profitable film. I purchased this book for my brother, as he wants to be a storyboard artist for Pixar or ILM (Lucas' Industrial Light and Magic) one day. It really serves it's purpose to help him think about the creative process and realize his true potential in this field. As a CGI fan, I'm impressed by the ability of Pixar's technical team to innovate new technology (such as sub-surface light scattering that removes the "plastic look" of Toy Story and gives the human characters more human appearance) for their projects. If you're a fan of Pixar, CGI, or good art in general, this book will serve you well on a coffee table or near an artist's drawing table.
Wonderfully interesting.......2005-09-28
As Brad Bird and his team worked on creating the story and look of his proposed movie, The Incredibles, they created a wealth of different concept and character sketches, and illustrations which helped to plan and define the movie. This book combines many of those fascinating images, plus reminisces from various team members which explain how the movie came to be, and came to be as it finally appeared.
Overall, I found this to be a wonderfully interesting book. I loved the images that the various artists created, such as concept drawings of the various characters, Bob's office, the Parr's house, and so much more. But, I must say that I even more enjoyed the insights into the movie which the creative team provides in this book. If you are a fan of The Incredibles, then you really must consider getting this book, it's a wonderful resource for us fans!
By the way, a nice addition to the book is the "centerfold," a color script of the movie provided by artist Lou Romano. Looking at it, you can see the whole movie in just a couple of pages!
Book Description
Inciting Americans at home to do their part in producing for the war effort, the poster-inexpensive, accessible, and ever-present-was an ideal agent for making war aims the personal mission of every citizen. From 1941 to 1945, government agencies, businesses, and private organizations issued an array of poster images linking the military front with the home front, calling upon all Americans to boost production at work and at home. The U.S. Office of War Information created the "Poster Pledge," urging volunteers to "avoid poster waste," "treat posters as real war ammunition," and "never let a poster lie idle."
This colorful collection of over 150 World War II-era posters focuses on the theme of wartime production on the home front. The range of designs and images will inspire graphic designers, while the descriptive captions and informative text will interest history and military buffs. Some of the famous slogans these posters introduced include "When you ride alone you ride with Hitler," "She won't talk-will you? The enemy has ears," "This is America... Keep it Free," and "Remember Pearl Harbor-purl harder!"
Customer Reviews:
Excellent with over 150 Colorful Poster Pics..............2005-02-02
This beautifully designed small coffee table paperback is the perfect guide thru US WW2 patriotic industrial and gov't posters. Yes, sometimes one may have felt "Big Brother" is watching, since these artistic posters decorated the walls of factories, building sides, and seemingly near everywhere during the war years. The message invariably was "Be A Nurse", "Help the Troops", "Contribute to the effort", and most important "Don'T SHIRK ON THE JOB..MAKE EVERY MOMENT COUNT FOR THE BOYS OVERSEAS!" Of course similar posters were designed and displayed by all combatants, and their messages were all near identical. The postwar industrial posters are also noted, and they were definitely childish at worst, compared with the noble and heroic aspirations sought in the best of the War Posters!
Delving Beneath the Surface of WWII Posters.......2003-02-25
"Are you doing all that you can?"
That simple question, asked in a popular WWII, finger-pointing poster, captures the patriotic spirit that pervaded America.
Posters, according to the authors, deserve credit as "the ideal agent for making war aims the personal mission of every citizen." Further, "Poster campaigns aimed not only to increase productivity in factories, but to enlarge people's views of their wartime responsibilities." Rockwell's enduring classic images, The Four Freedoms, illuminate this ideological trend.
How did wartime posters inspire military recruits, help increase domestic production, and sell war bonds during WWII? What were the different strategies used by government agencies to promote American ideals, self sacrifice, and gas rationing to a scared and confused public? Which advertising methods and artistic techniques worked best? Why?
This concise, colorful guide examines the power, poetry, and politics of American WWII posters in five thematic chapters. Delving beneath the surface of over 150 colorful posters, the authors showcase and analysis the zig-zag evolution of wartime posters.
Personally, I found chapter three (Art, Advertising, and Audience) to be a fascinating summary of vigorous debate among message makers. How should the war effort be framed? Is it a struggle for truth and democracy against terror and fascism? Is it a battle for survival? Should the focus be on personal fears, national achievements, or heroic freedom fighting?
George Gallup, later of pollster fame, urged posters be designed to appeal to "the lower third" of the population. Other analysts warned that the Office Of Facts and Figures early communication efforts were too abstract and contained too much information. "It would be wonderful indeed if the psychological war could be fought on an intellectual basis," warned two critics "if the American people who will win or lose this war were so educated and conditioned that we could bring them understanding on the terms we all prefer. But, through no fault of ours, they unfortunately are so educated. And in pitting the strategy of truth against the strategy of terror, we cannot stop to educate - we must win a war. We must state the truth in terms that will be understood by all levels of intelligence. Further, we must dramatize the truth." Powerful images soon replaced statistics in posters.
The considerable efforts to coordinate wartime messages across departments also generated vigorous debate. Eventually, the newly formed Office of Wartime Information identified six basic propaganda themes for general information programs: The nature of the Enemy; the nature of our Allies; the need to work; the need to fight; the need to sacrifice; and Americans and our ideals.
This visually appealing book also carefully examines the proliferation of wartime posters, full of patriotic messages, created by non-profit organizations, unions, and corporations. The last chapter, Postwar Aims and Private Aspirations, focuses on the impact of Sheldon-Claire company posters celebrating the middle class home, the traditional nuclear family, consumerism, and free enterprise. It also features a haunting gas mask poster produced and distributed by Kroger Grocery store chain.
The epilogue, the weakest section by far, argues that the change in postwar workplace posters reflected a more condescending air toward workers, explicit anti-union messages, and the renewnal of industrial conflict between management and labor. This thin section seems both out-of-place and a disjointed conclusion.
Design for Victory, despite this somewhat weak ending, should satisfy the curiousities of graphic designers, artists, historians, and scholars interested in advertising methods and persuasive communication.
A graphically interesting work not bogged down in history........1999-02-18
Anyone intersted in the graphic stylism, the stark imagery, the sometimes disturbing and sometimes hilarious generalizations made in American Propaganda during World War Two should check out this book. It contains many posters that I've not seen in print before, but unfortunately leaves many others out. From an academic, historical perspective the documentation and historical explanations for the U.S. propaganda machine are too brief. Still, the poster reproductions are fantastic, mostly in color. I would also reccomend Anthony Rhodes "Propaganda: The Art of Persuasion" for a look at other countries' propaganda from the same time period.
