of the Holocaust. The poems in this short biography are so inspiring. I read this as part of a unit study for the Holocaust and we enjoyed the message the author brought through her life experience and poems.

5 out of 5 stars Survival of a little star.......2007-05-31

Inge Auerbacher was only three years old,in 1938, when the massive pogrom called Kristallnacht, or the Night of the Broken Glass took place.

At the age of seven she was sent to Terezin concentration camp in Czechoslovakia.

In this incredible little book, Auerbacher tells of her experiences of being a little girl in Terezin concentration camp, one of the few young children who survived the death camps.

As she recounts:

"Of fifteen thousand children imprisoned in the Terezin concentration camps in Czechoslovakia, between 1941 and 1945, about one hundred survived. I am one of them. At least one and a half children were killed in the Nazi Holocaust. The reason most of these children died is that they were Jewish".

Auerbacher takes the horror of these years, and imparts a message of hope. She has created an account for young readers of her experiences, in a book filled with moving poetry and with the aid of haunting illustrations by Israel Bernbaum. There are also several photographs of her home town and of Inge as a child and her family life.

Auerbacher explains that the silent voices of the innocent children who died in the holocaust must be heard, and that is why felt compelled to trace the historical events that made this great evil possible and to tell her own story.

The author talks about her home town, Kippenheim, a village in southern Germany, where she was born in 1934.

She recounts the iddylic existance of her family and community in Kippenheim, until the horrific events of Kristallnacht.

She traces the roots of anti-Semitism for young readers, and summarizes the rise of Hitler, and the holocaust, before talking about her own story.

"We still feel the pain and we weep.

This nightmare will not let us sleep.

A page in history; one must learn.

Yesterday us, and tommorow your turn?"

She talks of her experiences of being forced to wear the yellow star at the age of six years old, the harsh circumstances of deportation, and the horrific conditions for children in Terezin in crowded and filthy cells infested with rats, mice, fleas and bedbugs, and of the other children who she befriended in the camp, such as Ada, a German Jewish child who longed to go to the Land of Israel, as did so many hundreds of thousands of Jews trapped in the Nazi inferno.

Ada taught her a song about the Holy Land, and promised Inge that they would soon go to there, "Just hold on a little longer" she used to say.

Ada's dream never came true-she died at the age of nine in Auschwitz.

Another friend was Ruth, a beautiful blond little girl of mixed Jewish and Gentile blood, who was brought up as a Christian, and who loved to draw. Ruth died in Terezin because her Jewish heritage, even though she never considered herself Jewish.

The final two chapters are about Inge's liberation from Auschwitz, and her hopes and afterthoughts:

She closes with a wonderful poem about the horrors and deaths and the hopes and dreams of those who survived and their descendants entitled NEVER AGAIN:

"Minds were dulled by bombs of hate,

Only the hero cared about our fate,

We saw the truth, it began to unfold,

You may kill the body but never the soul.

Here we are with honour and pride,

a new generation at our side,

the silent voices join us today,

Never, never again we hope and pray".

4 out of 5 stars Child Survives the Holocaust.......2007-03-22

Inge is just a child living in a small village in Germany when Hitler rises to power. Like so many other Jewish families, her family did not escape from Germany soon enough to be safe. By the time they think to get out, it is too late. They are sent from place to place until they are finally deported to Terezin, a concentration camp in Czechoslovakia. Conditions there are horrible, and people live in constant fear of being shipped off to Auschwitz, where the gas chambers are.

Because Inge's father is a disabled war veteran, shot in the shoulder in World War I while fighting for Germany, the family has special priveleges in Terezin. Inge is able to stay with her mother and father, instead of being separated. However, the family is still fighting for survival, just like every other family in the camp.

Miraculously, Inge and her parents survive the Holocaust in Terezin. They live to be liberated and to start a new life in the United States after the war. This is one of few stories about the Holocaust with a relatively happy ending.

I liked that there was so much history included in this story. It isn't only Inge's story, but the story of the Holocaust in general. She tells of Hitler's rise to power and the other things that were going on right before she was sent to the concentration camp. I didn't like the inclusion of the poetry in the book. I felt like it broke up the flow of the story, because it often was in the middle of a page where the narrative was.

This book is a neccesity if you would like to get background on the Holocaust while reading a young girl's journey through it.

5 out of 5 stars A absolute must have.......2007-09-12

I read "I am Spock" first. Then last year I found by incident the book "I am not Spock" and ordered it. I did read it in one go. My opinion about Leonard Nimoy was always a very high one. He is very intelligent, he has an absolutely gorgeous humour and he is a brilliant Actor, Author, Director and Photographer. I hope he stays with us still a long time. I adore him very much.

Everyone who is interested in his life and work and especially his life with that logical vulcan, should read this book ... and "I am Spock" (20 years later).

4 out of 5 stars Comparing the memoirs.......2006-05-09

If you are here, and not at his newer biography then your question must be, should I own this one, the other, or both.

This is a difficult choice. This book is worth it to Star Trek fans for the nostalgia factor, yet many parts of it are lifted directly into "I Am Spock".

A note on the library binding, for those curious. In this case it refers to a cardboard binding, like a school yearbook. Imagine if instead of having a lsipcover, the book itself is glossy perhaps. It's nice, so don't fret that part.

3 out of 5 stars Good Book but Expensive.......1999-01-17

This book was very good read but I felt it did not tell me enough about Leonard Nimoy. He basically mentions is work only. Nothing about his upbringing and childhood. Mind you the book and is thin i.e. only 130 odd pages. I greatly enjoyed the Dialogues between Nimoy and Spock and I liked the introspective thoughts of the first few chapters where Nimoy wonders who Spock is. It's a daft thing to complain about but I found it confusing that the anecdotes changed mid-chapter without a line break. I kept looking for some connection that was not there until I got used to it. It's great that I don't have to wait 20 years to read "I am Spock".

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable. Spock fans will love it........1998-10-01

This book is well-written and intelligent. Since I read Nimoy's later autobiography, "I Am Spock," first, that probably changed my perception of what might have been a 5-star review. Many anecdotes from this first book are incorporated into the second, but not all. Also, I find Nimoy's maturer style more insightful, as well it should be. (Some readers do prefer the young, "unjaded" personality that comes through in "I Am Not Spock," and that's understandable, too.) The second book came after the Star Trek movies, and is, therefore, a more complete life story. If you find this book expensive or can only afford one book, buy the second book. Die-hard Spock fans, however (of which I am one), will enjoy reading both books. Nimoy's voice in "I Am Not Spock" is clearly the voice of a youth of the 1960's, and in that respect, it does take one closer to the source, as this '60's cultural identity was influential in the formation of the "Spock" character. On the other hand, it takes the maturer voice of his second book to point out that fact. By the way, don't think he knocks the "Spock" character in this book. After reading "I Am Spock," I was curious to discover whether Nimoy had really loved Spock all along, as he insisted, or if he'd had an early disenchantment with the character, only to regret it later and try to backpedal in his second book to dispell the negative vibes that followed "I Am Not Spock." Not a chance: in "I Am Not Spock," it is immediately apparent that Nimoy loves Spock. And, although he would like for people to understand Nimoy as a well-rounded, human individual, (including the woman who insisted he stop trying to look like that Spock man on TV!) he never disavows the character, "Spock," to achieve his aim. Critics who claimed Nimoy hated "Spock" obviously didn't read past the title of this book.

4 out of 5 stars Spock, 70's-style..........1998-09-24

I read this book after reading Nimoy's later (1990's) book I AM SPOCK. The differences were interesting. This book is written by a man of the idealistic 60's who describes his struggle as a creative actor against the wallet-minded producers of his works (and so on) vs. the more jaded (or wiser, depending on how you look at it) Hollywood veteran of the second book. Still, this book gives a better insight into Nimoy the *person*, which is what I find most interesting. This is definitely of interest to anyone interested in a glimpse of the psychology of an actor 20 years ago.

Oh, and trekkies. ;)

A great book for a 5-8 year old who loves Star Wars. Buy it new or in excellent condition to get the stickers.

5 out of 5 stars an essential read for the young fan.......2007-01-26

"I am a Droid" takes the reader through a tour of the Star Wars galaxy's mechanized characters. As would be expected, everybody's favorite protocol droid is the narrator. C-3PO talks about both the benevolent robots (astromech droids, protocol droids, worker droids, etc.) and the nefarious ones (battle droids, destroyers, etc.). Some illustrations are from stills, but most images draw from "The Phantom Menace." The pages are very creatively designed with respect to the way the images interact with the text. The reading level is good for most second graders. Considering that the book initially retailed for $3.99, the accompanying stickers were by themselves worth the cost. "I am a Droid" is an essential book in any young Padawan's library.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for young readers!.......2002-10-29

For those of you with young children, my son will be four in a couple months, this book is awesome! He hasn't put it down since we gave it to him a week ago.

This is a short picture book, which is narrated by C3-P0. The pictures are vivid and colorful. Most of them look as if they were taken straight from the Phantom Menace film footage, giving them an 'in the action' feel.

As an added bonus, this book also contains foil stickers of various droids/robots. My son loved pulling them off and sticking them to his clothes and bed posts. Reminds me of when I was four playing with my Star Wars figures and the likes. I will definitely be getting the remainder of the books in this series.

Excellent for kids and parents too!

My son enjoyed this book. It was an easy read for a 7 year old, with nice pictures and interesting facts. Probably perfect for a 5 or 6 year old.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, intelligent book for the very young andall others.......2000-08-20

This is just a terrific storybook. After a year, it is still one of my 3 year old niece's favorites.

The graphic design is sophisticated and elegant, and the book introduces young children to the Star Wars universe with great style. It's intelligent, a quality missing in so many children's movie tie-in books. The presentation of the Jedi is age-appropriate but will also appeal to much older readers.

Three cheers for Random House and Lucas Books!

4 out of 5 stars Cute as a bug!.......1999-12-08

Got a grown-up Qui-Gon fan with a sense of humor who needs a stocking stuffer? This'll do nicely. It's got pretty pictures and stickers. And as every thinking being knows, stickers make *everything* better! ^_^

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for young children.......1999-07-21

As a special education teacher working to stimulate children with reading differences/difficulties, I am always looking for highly motivating, well-illustrated, well-written books. This book is all three, plus it has the advantage of appealing, in its subject material, not just to the younger readers (grades 1-4), but to those in grades 5-12 (yes, 12!) as well. I was able to do many interesting activities for boys and girls with learning differences, using materials based on Episodes 4, 5, and 6. So far, the story/activity books from Episode I, including this one and the three others in the four-book series, are just as carefully done, with the same potential for entrancing and motivating the low-level reader. (And I, a high-level reader, also think they are simply super for reading to great-grandchildren or to myself.) The Star Wars materials, this story in particular, offer many opportunities to develop high-level critical thinking skills, which these students usually have in abundance, and to stimulate writing and vocabulary skills. Even a short book like this one offers the opportunity to discuss acceptable behaviors, to improve choice-making, and to define personal goals. Thank you, George Lucas, Marc Cerasini and Random House, for making solid-gold books like this available!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-01-04

I was looking for books to use with my first grade leveled reading groups, especially for my lower ones. This would be too difficult for them, even though it's Level 1. I was able to use Monkey See, Monkey Do (also Level 1) with one of my groups, but maybe the science books are more difficult. This would be ok as a read aloud or for more advanced readers. Some of the words in the story include cloudy, pictures, constellations, handle, Polaris, except, reflects and sailors.

I was also surprised to see this is actually a Scholastic Reader. I didn't realize that was synonymous with Hello Reader.

I have been more pleased with Green Light Readers and School Zone: Start to Read.

Ask anybody, old, young, family, friend...if he knows about Mr. Spock: the answer will always be yes. Not anybody has seen a Star Trek TV show or movie but anybody knows about Spock the alien. Why?
Why is star Trek the only serie that has become a legend and has been played for more than 40 years, hundreds of episodes with different casts ?
Because of their creator Gene Rodenberry, because its vison of the future and better world was loved by millions of people, because of the unicity of their actors, especially the first ones, responsible of the creation of this worldwide cultural phenomenon.
So it makes sense to read this actor and art director Leonard Nimoy: Mr Spock has a lot to say here and made a great book, with fun, emotion, philosophy and a mine of information about the creator of the serie, the directors, other actors, etc - must read !

1 out of 5 stars Which is it???.......2006-10-14

Mr. Nimoy, are you Spock, or are you not Spock? You wrote this book and also wrote another book saying the exact opposite. To write a book saying one thing and to write a book that says the exact opposite is NOT LOGICAL!!! Logic, logic, logic. Fascinating. No, how about stupid. Vulcans don't show emotion, so you should not feel insulted by this review, or will you? Since you can't decide if you are Spock or not hahahaha.

4 out of 5 stars Fine Career Biography........2006-04-15

Star Trek fans will love this book, and non-fans should like it as well. Many celebrity bio's are so Narcissistic you can't finish. Although there was some ego present here it was not overbearing. The first chapter was slow, but it picked up after that. The conversations between Spock and Nimoy are worth the price even to a modest fan of the original series. There were moments when you felt like you were on the set with him. Which made me feel like going back and re-reading all of the Star Trek novels. He also was kind to others in his industry who at times were rather nasty to him. I feel he is an underated actor. His two seasons on Mission Impossible and his episode on Columbo are worth viewing. I give it four stars.

5 out of 5 stars Well done.......2005-09-08

Well written. Mr. Nimoy remains humble and grateful for the success of the show. I am impressed; the book was an easy and yet extremely interesting read. Coming from the perspective of someone who grew up with the show - I enjoyed the details I never knew. Also, growing up without much financial resources (money) Star Trek -for some reason- gave me hope. May you (Mr. Nimoy) and the rest of the crew - live a long and prosperous live. Thank you for the years. May God bless Scotty.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Star Trek fans!.......2005-03-21

This is a really enthralling book, I read it in a week! I literally could not put it down. It is a history of how Spock came to exist and how he affected the actor's life. Nimoy has done an exellent job showing how Spock was not just a character on tv and movies, but a part of himself. Get it now!!

My 4 year old loves this book. It's very cute and he loves to learn new words so he can color in a star in the back of the book. I am going to order more Fisher Price All-Star Readers.

The wall chart system is wonderful. Made one myself but no where near as nice as this chart, which also has reusable stickers.

The purpose of this book is to encourage good behavior & reward it.

We added stickers daily to the wall chart for each category of good behavior my son achieved.

At the end of the week total behavior was assessed & one of the certificated was awarded if the weeks behavior warranted it.

All the stickers are fully reusable and at the end of each week can be removed and stored in the empty panel on the wallchart for reuse the next week.

5 out of 5 stars A book to cuddle up with........2006-08-20

"Up in the clouds and way past the trees, Little Star bounced across a Breeze..."

The opening lines of this book tell us how Little Star began his adventure as he set out to discover his purpose in life.

This delightful book follows Little Star's quest for his special identity. As luck would have it, the answer he seeks comes from some unique friends he meets along the way. These friends include Breeze, Morning Dew, RainDrop, Mr. Puddle, Suzie the bee, Mrs. Buttercup and even Larry the rat. Each of these friends has his own special reason for being, and, through their wisdom, Little Star soon finds his own place.

The rhythm of the verses in this story is contagious and the illustrations are brilliantly created with characters that are especially whimsical and enchanting. As an added plus, children cannot help but notice the different expressions that flit across Little Star's face as his new friends counsel him. These range from fear and annoyance to wonder, acceptance, and finally to joy as he finds his true place in the universe.

***** Cuddle up with your child and begin a conversation with them about their own special place as you read Little Star's question - Why Am I?! *****
