Book Description

The Second Edition of Florida's Birds is a major event for Florida birders, new and old. Each section of the book is updated, and 30 new species are added. Also added are range maps for certain species and color coded guides to months when the bird is present and/or breeding in Florida. Now with color throughout, each bird is illustrated three times: with the text about the bird, in the index listing, and on a plate with similar species for help in identification. Thus, Florida's Birds is now an even better field guide. Unlike the other books available on the birds of Florida, Florida's Birds is also a reference that goes beyond its usefulness in the field. Sections on bird study and bird feeding provide practical advice for enjoying Florida's birds; and sections on bird habitats, threatened and endangered species, exotic species, and bird conservation will assist the reader in understanding the ecological and cultural landscapes that have created one of the world's unique avifaunas.

5 out of 5 stars Great for photographers and casual observers.......2007-08-23

I got this book for the purpose of identifying species while reviewing photographs I've taken. I haven't used it in the field (yet) but it has become an excellent reference guide. There is a lot of information, the decriptions are well-written and the sections about Florida ecology and environments are also helpful. I'm a native Floridian and I found myself frequently learning new things while reading this book. I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Looks good so far.......2006-03-27

I got this book to take along on a trip to Florida planned for a couple of months from now, so at this point it's too early to say exactly how helpful it is. However, based upon previous trips to Florida, it seems to be pretty good so far (although there are two birds I've previously seen that I still couldn't find in this guide).

5 out of 5 stars 2nd edition updates everything!.......2006-03-19

Florida-bound or resident bird-watchers won't want to be without the second edition of a classic state- specific field guide, FLORIDA'S BIRDS: A FIELD GUIDE AND REFERENCE. This is no reprint edition: each section of FLORIDA'S BIRDS has been updated and thirty new species added, along with range maps for species and color-coded guides to month of presence. Each bird is illustrated not once but three times, text discusses habitats and habits, and sections on bird study and feeding provide in-depth detail. A 'must' handbook for any with Florida roots.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for Florida ornithologists and bird lovers.......2006-01-10

Now in a newly revised and expanded second edition, Florida's Birds: A Field Guide And Reference is a wonderful guide for Florida birdwatchers. Every section has been updated, and 30 new species added. A brief introduction and overview leads into the species-by-species listings that include the names, description, habitat, range, life cycle summary, and a color-coded at-a-glance list of the months each species can be found within Florida. Perhaps most captivating of all is illustrator Karl Karalus' full-color renditions of each bird species, in a meticulous and lifelike manner reminiscent of Audubon himself, making Florida's Birds a delight to simply page through. Highly recommended for Florida ornithologists and bird lovers.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed in information--returned book.......2005-12-14

Eventhough I may not have really saved any money, I did not see any point in keeping this book once I received and reviewed it. I ordered for my son in law who lives on Fl coast and loves to fish coastal waters. He wanted a book to give information about the birds he saw then. I was hoping the size and information in this one would make it good for his purpose. This was not the case, however.
More than half of the book is concerned with ecological and birdwatching information--that is just not what he was looking for. I was disappointed in the size of photographs of the birds, but when so much is given to other aspects not that much room for bird information is left.
The quality of construction seemed good, but the spine is fairly narrow and the book needs to be opened fully to read all the text. It is possible that repeated readings may cause some pages to come loose.

Roy Eberhardt is the new kid--again. This time around it's Trace Middle School in humid Coconut Grove, Florida. But it's still the same old routine: table by himself at lunch, no real friends, and thick-headed bullies like Dana Matherson pushing him around. But if it wasn't for Dana Matherson mashing his face against the school bus window that one day, he might never have seen the tow-headed running boy. And if he had never seen the running boy, he might never have met tall, tough, bully-beating Beatrice. And if he had never met Beatrice, he might never have discovered the burrowing owls living in the lot on the corner of East Oriole Avenue. And if he had never discovered the owls, he probably would have missed out on the adventure of a lifetime. Apparently, bullies do serve a greater purpose in the scope of the universe. Because if it wasn't for Dana Matherson...

In his first novel for a younger audience, Carl Hiaasen (Basket Case, etc.) plunges readers right into the middle of an ecological mystery, made up of endangered miniature owls, the Mother Paula's All-American Pancake House scheduled to be built over their burrows, and the owls' unlikely allies--three middle school kids determined to beat the screwed-up adult system. Hiaasen's tongue is firmly in cheek as he successfully cuts his slapstick sense of humor down to kid-size. Sure to be a hoot, er, hit with middle school mystery fans. (Ages 10 to 15) --Jennifer Hubert

Book Description

Unfortunately, Roy’s first acquaintance in Florida is Dana Matherson, a well-known bully. Then again, if Dana hadn’t been sinking his thumbs into Roy’s temples and mashing his face against the school-bus window, Roy might never have spotted the running boy. And the running boy is intriguing: he was running away from the school bus, carried no books, and–here’s the odd part–wore no shoes. Sensing a mystery, Roy sets himself on the boy’s trail. The chase introduces him to potty-trained alligators, a fake-fart champion, some burrowing owls, a renegade eco-avenger, and several extremely poisonous snakes with unnaturally sparkling tails.
Roy has most definitely arrived in Carl Hiaasen’s Florida.

5 out of 5 stars Owls Rock!.......2007-07-23

I loved this book! It was about kids saving endangered owls and I love wildlife and nature. The characters were interesting and funny; sometimes sarcastic, except for Roy. The plot was interesting and well-developed. I learned a little bit about Florida which I did not know before. This book made me want to visit Florida and it made me want to save endangered animals. It made me realize that kids can save endangered animals and make a difference in the world. I highly recommend this book; I think most kids would love this book.

3 out of 5 stars so far.......2007-07-14

I've read three books this summer. My grandmother is paying me a dollar for every book I read so I'm not bragging. The first two weren't like work at all, but this one almost is. I thought it would be more adventerous. That's the kind of book I really like. For everybody who likes more adventer, adventuer / \ excitment, I think they should read The Misadventures of Maude March, and if they are a boy, they will like The Voyage of the Frog.

4 out of 5 stars An Inspiring Book.......2007-06-04

I have recently read the book Hoot by Carl Hiaasen. Have you ever felt left out, or have you felt like your not where you're supposed to be? This is how Roy Eberhardt, a teenage boy from Montana, feels after moving to Florida. Roy investigates a mystery of the boy running with no shoes on, while he tries to save an owl species. Will life in Florida be looking up for Roy?
The theme or lesson of this book I think was to not let things get in your way. Hoot was very inspiring and it makes you want to help animals in your community. Also, you can literally feel yourself as if you were a character in the setting. I'd advise you to read Hoot because I know you'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars A great book but I liked the Tommytown series better.......2007-06-01

I thought this was a great book, but not as good as the Tommytown series. In Tommytown the boys 11 -14 and the girl, Karen 14 years old acted more like their age and the scenes where funny and exciting. But both writers are super! Take a look at Tommytown and The Boys From Tommytown , (I actually did it. I inserted the titles) Anyway you won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars give a Hoot about this book:0.......2007-05-22

I thought that this book by Carl Hiaasen was great! This was a very inspirational book about a boy named Roy who moves to Coconut Cove, Florida. He faces many problems like a bully named Dana Matherson, and he meets a girl Beatrice, and her mal treated step- brother. Together the kids try to save mini owls who were going to get hurt, or killed by a building company that was building a new Mother Paula's Pancake House. I would reccomend this book to any one, but especially animal lovers. It is a great novel just like Carl Hiaasens other novels.

Book Description

Everyone says they would like to retire early, but Rodney Rothman actually did it -- forty years early. Burnt out, he decides at the age of twenty-eight to get an early start on his golden years. He travels to Boca Raton, Florida, where he moves in with an elderly piano teacher at Century Village, a retirement community that is home to thousands of senior citizens.

Early Bird is an irreverent, hilarious, and ultimately warmhearted account of Rodney's journey deep into the heart of retirement. Rodney struggles for acceptance from the senior citizens he shares a swimming pool with and battles with cranky octogenarians who want him off their turf. Before long he observes, "I don't think Tuesdays with Morrie would have been quite so uplifting if that guy had to spend more than one day a week with Morrie."

In the spirit of retirement, Rodney fashions a busy schedule of suntanning, shuffleboard, and gambling cruises. As the months pass, his neighbors seem to forget that he is fifty years younger than they are. He finds himself the potential romantic interest of an aging femme fatale. He joins a senior softball club and is disturbed to learn that he is the worst player on the team.

Early Bird is a funny, insightful, and moving look at what happens to us when we retire, viewed from a remarkably premature perspective. Any reader who plans on becoming an old person will enjoy joining Rodney on his strange journey, as he reconsiders his notions of romance, family, friendship, and ultimately, whether he's ever going back to work.

as a potiential early retiree, I found this book a great, comical, guide to follow my dream.

4 out of 5 stars Early Contender for For Memoir of the Year.......2007-04-06

As a male around the age of the author, I found this book to be a holiday treat, and found myself vicariously living the "easy" life through the humorous and witty prose encompassed in each chapter. Interesting enough, the author often paints how the life of a retiree can be equally difficult as that of a man entering the competitive business world. Full of villians, cliques and quarrels, Early Bird will have people second guessing taking the route of a retirement center in their geriatric years.

5 out of 5 stars Read Rodney before it's too late..........2006-11-29

When Rodney Rothman lost his job, he could have taken the path of least resistance, the path most frequently trod upon: he could have simply found another job. But not Rodney. Instead, he opted to retire to Florida amid people usually twice his age. Florida, he says, is where you go when you want to fall off the face of the earth. Don't for a minute think that Florida is a dull place. Rodney joins the volunteer police department where he patrols the mean streets, culminating in witnessing a Toyota taking up two spaces at a neighborhood mall. And, gambling -- witness his efforts to break into the pool side card games monopolized by the women in his complex. Yes, in addition to the violence, there's sex. Read the chapter on that siren Vivian, who really does appeal to Rodney, though she will later deny having any intention of seducing him. And, of course, on a more poignant note: there's religion. Rodney, though Jewish, rents a room with a wall-size picture of Jesus over his bed. Later, when Christians implore him to take Jesus into his heart, Rodney takes comfort in the fact that he and Jesus are roomates. This is an important book which manages, despite his very objective reporting, to shed more light on Rodney than it does on retirement in Florida. Rodney, you're in our prayers!

5 out of 5 stars A great, just for fun, read..........2006-09-13

I found this book as an unemployed college graduate. I was trying to figure out my "career" options in life. This book didn't help me find that, but made me feel like there were others out there who wander, searching for their calling. It was entertaining and humorous, just a really fun book, written by a great author. A definite must read!

4 out of 5 stars Funny, fast read.......2006-08-31

I picked up this book Friday night, began reading it on Sunday night and finished it by Tuesday afternoon. Rodney Rothman does a great job of capturing the humor of his experience living in a Florida retirement community. The characters he writes about come alive on the pages and I often found myself laughing out loud at the obsurdity of it all. I found the first two chapters a bit akward, but by chapter 3, Rodney hits his stride and doesn't turn back. Surprisingly, this crazy recount of retirement living at 28 is hilarious, heart-warming and poignant all at the same time.

    Book Description

With this lovely and informative volume, Alan Feduccia preserves the pathbreaking work of Mark Catesby, the English naturalist and illustrator who founded natural history and bird art in America. First published by UNC Press in 1985, the book features all 109 bird illustrations, 20 color plates, and the entire text from Catesby's pioneering Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahamas. Annotating Catesby's writings from a modern perspective, Feduccia discusses the perception of each species during the Colonial period, comments on its habits, and compares Catesby's observations with those of such other early naturalists as John White, John Lawson, Alexander Wilson, and John James Audubon.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointment.......2007-02-09

Having seen the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds I was interested in the Florida version. However after receiving the book and looking through it I was greatly disappointed. The illustrations (photographs?) are very poor as far as identifying many of the birds. The drawings of the full version are much superior. It is also very incomplete in its coverage of the birds present. Upon receiving it I tried looking up birds I had recently identified and found a surprising number missing from the book although I could see some of them in my yard trees. Florida's Birds from Pineapple Press is much better although the first edition of it is also incomplete. I kept the NG book in my library but for now I will continue to use Sibley (Eastern Birds) and Stokes (Eastern Birds) as my field guides. One thing in favor of the NG Florida book is that it is small enough to actually be carried into the field easily.

NOT the book for experienced birders. Absolutely perfect for the dabbler as you will always be able to easily and quickly find your bird in this book. Though the book does provide a limited number of facts and descriptions of each bird, it should be used more as a visual guide to help you learn the name of each bird species.

This gives you tips for differentiating between an anhinga and a cormorant (pointed or hooked beak) or snowy egret vs American egret (black vs yellow beak). Also shows chicks, immature birds, breeding plumage and females that vary in coloration.
The photos are large (some even full page), colorful and a real help in identifying the birds. It is a good browsing book as well, to just enjoy the birds flying, eating, swimming, etc.
Only 60+ pages, but the oversize format makes it a great souvenir of a trip to Florida or a resource for bird lovers or Florida residents. Actually it is useful to anyone living in the South or the Gulf coast states where these birds can be seen.
It includes coots, ducks, egrets, flamingos, frigatebirds, gallinules, gulls, herons, ibis, kingfisher, limpkins, osprey, pelicans, sandpipers, skimmers, spoonbills, storks and terns.

This was a wonderful book. I had to buy it for an ecology class on the Everglades, but it was well worth it. It has beautiful large color illustrations, and descriptions of the various water birds of Florida. A great investment whether you plan to visit, like I did, or just to enjoy the book by itself. Really useful in identifying birds, especially wading, in the cypress swamps, as well as the entire Everglades water shed. A must buy.

Sure, it lacks a bit of detail that I would like about the birds. Sure some of the pictures do not seem to be that clear but shesh, this is field guide. This is small enough to carry with you and the color coding is awesome! If you are new to birding, like me, then get the book.

You can always buy books that have every little detail about the bird. Use those books to study the bird before you go out. This is for when you are out and go "What bird was that?". It was almost all brown... so go to the brown section.

I now have two of his books. Will get more as I go to that state.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best field guides for the Florida bird watcher!.......2006-09-02

Mr. Stan Tekiela has established a reputation for his series of bird watching field guides. What's most unique about his approach is the fact he divides the guide by feather coloration rather than by species or groups of species. The sound recordings are of great quality and a must to have with the field guide. I highly recommend this book for those individuals who, like me, are just barely beginning to get their feet wet in this fantastic hobby of bird watching.

4 out of 5 stars These are great for beginners and experienced birders.......2006-01-14

I have used a copy of Birds of Michigan for several years. I'll be in Orlando and Jacksonville this year and so got this for my trip. Many birds that occur in Florida are, no doubt, not included butwith several hundred documented species, it would be impossible to make a pocket guide like this with every potentially present bird.

My ONLY complaint about this series is that some birds are hard to find because they have several dominant colors and you might have to look in two or three sections to find it. But that's easier than scanning through 200-300 pages in my Peterson guide.

1 out of 5 stars Where are the birds?.......2003-06-27

Many of Florida's most interesting or unusual birds are missing from this book. Whooping cranes, Limpkin, Red cockaded woodpeckers, all of special interest and missing.
Aracaras and Snail Kites are also missing. This is a potboiler.

4 out of 5 stars Easy Identification for Beginners.......2003-04-17

I have this wonderful little book, and it has stimulated my bird watching immensly. The birds are seperated by color, so if you see a black bird, go to the black section. I recommend this book highly for children, beginners, the just curious. It is small, but the pictures will help alot. Love this book!!! Buy it I think it is worth every penny

Beautiful true to life photos of common Florida birds in their natural habitat. Very factual and informative.

This is an excellent book for the Florida bird watcher. It has large color photographs of the birds in their natural habitats. Often with more than one picture of the species! There is just enough information included to answer common questions. I use this book in my classroom and the elementary aged students find it useful and easy to use.

I have also used Florida's Fabulous Butterflies. Same excellent quaility!

I bought this for my husband, who uses it all the time. Whenever we have a new bird come to the yard he gets the book out to see what it is. It is very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Useful Guide for Florida.......2004-11-18

Identifies the major habitats in Florida such as sand pine scrub, mesic hammocks, salt marshes, etc. Features include about 50 pages with color artwork showing the birds (grouped by type). The adjacent page gives a brief description plus notes on preferred habitat, then refers the reader to another page for more detail on the bird.
Pluses: charts the months the bird is in Florida and also the breeding season, makes an effort to explain key differences in similar looking birds, the index is set up with little boxes so it can be used as a checklist also.
Minuses: pictures somewhat small and at times overcrowded (ducks), it's a nuisance to flip back and forth from the pictures to the detailed write ups.

4 out of 5 stars Great for specificaly Florida birds.......2004-03-10

This is a great reference book for anyone who is interested just in birds that can be found in Florida. The drawings have enough detail that most birders from beginner to advanced intermediate should find them useful. I used this book for the first few years of birding and found it to be of great value. Many people may attempt to compare this to Sibley's Guides but I would have to say that each has its advantages. Sibley's often has too much detail and does not show just the birds that you may see in one specific area. This book show only Florida birds and groups them in a logic fashion that allows for fast reference. If you are in Florida bird watching (I strongly suggest it!) then you should find this book useful. This is not a replacement for the Sibley Guide but more of a quick reference book that can be used as the primary source. Go to Sibley's Guides for fine details when in doubt but unless you know exactly where to find each bird, this guide will be less frustrating.

    2 out of 5 stars My opinion.......2003-01-02

This field guide handy bird book to have around the house, but not so great in the field. The color illustrations offer limited variations for seasonal plumage and the color is very inaccurate. Most importantly the information and illustrations are in separate sections of the book making identification cumbersome. I recommend sticking to Sibley's or the National Geographic field guide.

Excellent color depictions, good cross referencing to information pages vs. habitat and picture pages. It is exactly as represented - a good reference guide.

A well illustrated book but not as complete as Peterson's Birds of Eastern and Central North America. Would make an interesting addition as a reference book but would not recommend it as one's only book on Florida birds.
