'Mind is the Master-Power that molds and makes,
And Man is Mind, and evermore he takes
The tool of Thought, and shaping what he wills,
Brings forth a thousand joys, a thousand ills:-
He thinks in secret, and it comes to pass:
Environment is but his looking glass.'
-From the book
This book was my introduction to 'Change your thoughts, change yourlife'. A friend gave me this book several years ago and it dramatically changed the way I began to think. It just made sense, it clicked with me. I was also very surprised to find out that all those years I was thinking that my thoughts were private, no one but me could know them. Then, I read this and realized that our thoughts do show in many ways: appearance, health, our circumstances, etc.
I have read many books on this subject and this is one that will ALWAYS remain in my collection. I still pull it off the shelf and read it occassionally. It's overflowing with valuable wisdom on how your thoughts create your world.
This volume has 5 books in one. It's a small but somewhat chunky book with 384 pages.
"Oh Be Wise", This helps!.......2007-04-10
Great book. His writings are inspiring. You will also note some interesting biographical info in the beginning.
Get All Three Volumes.......2007-03-16
This is the volume to start with, but I would recommend all three volumes in "The Wisdom of James Allen" series. These books are valuable to read in marathon sessions, yet they can be practically consumed in short sittings. A meal of just a few pages will give you sufficient spiritual energy for the day. I recommend reading and re-reading because the wisdom is timeless and the principles can be applied daily. This is important reading for clergy, counselors and anyone who wants to start the quest of being a guide by first learning to guide themselves.
Great Wisdom.......2007-01-10
As a Man Thinketh is a must read and has been for most of the 20th and now the 21st century. To get this companion piece with other great writings by James Allen is amazing. I would suggest it for anyone who is interested in finding the tools necessary to command their own lives.
Book review.......2007-01-04
A very enjoyable read. The simplicity of his ideas is refreshing. I do believe it really can be this simple. This small pocket size book is easy to fit into a bag/purse, or pocket and take with you wherever you go. I find spending a few minutes here and there reading it works well. Pleasant and easy to follow. Seems like a very sincere person.

A Revolutionary Theological Treatise.......2006-01-31
There has been no book written in the last 1900 years that better explains the human condition and the Christian response to it. Niebuhr draws from an extensive understanding of political science, psychology, history, and religion to explain the origin and nature of sin. He elaborates on the abortive efforts of the ego to overreach the human condition through partial and disingenuous strategies. He reflects on why collectives, lacking the constraints of individual conscience, so dramatically exceed the sinfulness of the individuals that constitute them.
Systems of human justice are always compromises between competing wills. Thus, perfect love that enters into history is destined to be sacrificed; a fact revealed most vividly in the tragedy of the Cross.
Absorbing and Rewarding.......2003-10-25
In the Nature and Destiny of Man, Reinhold Niebuhr, the influential "Christian realist" theologian, deals with big issues: the nature of man, history, and the end of the history. He offers deep - I would say profound - support for his views, but not proof. He offers one interpretation of the meaning of life's mysteries but not the only possible interpretation.
Niebuhr begins by arguing that the Christian view of man's nature, compared with alternative views, is more complete and offers more explanatory power. According to the Christian view, man is made in the image of God. Unlike alternative views that establish a good/bad duality between mind and body, in the Christian view, both mind and body are good because both are created by God. Man is made to live in harmony with others and God's will but violates this harmony when he - inevitably - makes himself the center and source of meaning for his life.
Man has tremendous creative and imaginative powers, and his mind can transcend both itself (since he can make his own thoughts the object of contemplation) and the natural world (since he can manipulate natural forces to create new possibilities and vitalities of nature). Because man cannot find ultimate meaning in what he can transcend, he cannot find ultimate meaning within himself or in the natural world. This is why we turn to religion.
Christianity is a religion of revelation, meaning that Christians believe that God must speak to us in order for us to arrive at a correct understanding of his nature and will. If the Bible is to be believed, God spoke to man throughout history but his message was not clearly understood. Because of our misunderstanding, and because God's law is so radically different from man's law, Jesus' message was highly offensive to his listeners. What Jesus told us is that God overcomes evil not by destroying evildoers but by taking their evil upon himself. God's love is suffering love.
To live in accordance with the law of love seems to require that we accept the reality of an existence beyond this life. If the reality of this other existence is denied, then Jesus' statement that "whoever loses his life for my sake will find it" makes no sense.
Yet, we are not to despise this life. To be righteous, to a Christian, means to serve others, and we need to strive after intermediate and partial arrangements that help point the way toward ultimate resolutions and revelations. God provides ultimate meaning. Just as the human mind can provide meaning to a sequence of chronological events by comprehending them all in an instant, so God provides meaning by comprehending all events both prospectively and retrospectively.
This poor summary of what Niebuhr has to say on the largest subjects makes it sound as if this is a very otherworldly book. It is not. The book contains a great deal of keen observation of human behavior and current events at the outset of World War II, and Niebuhr later became extremely influential in the U.S. State Department. Niebuhr's observations on politics and social justice still speak to us with great immediacy.
Best 20th Century Theological Work.......2000-09-24
This work is known to be a classic, and in my opinion, it is the best written last century. I even enjoyed R. Niebuhr better than Tillich and Barth. His erudition and conclusions are powerful and engaging. I recommend reading this for those familiar with political thought and philosophy of the modern era. By no means is this work parochial, it scope makes it a enthralling read even for those who find themselves outside to sprectrum of Christian belief.
The Nature and Destiny of Man : A Christian Interpretation.......2000-07-21
Niebuhr has developed the most balanced statement of our character, identity, and core behavior motivations. He references all major worldviews from Eastern Naturalisms to Western Rationalism to Bibilical Revelation. The Bibilical Worldview provides the most balanced perspective of our human nature, which is offensive to the contrasting perspectives. In Volume 1, he identifies our form and our vitality as essential components of our nature. He also identifies that our desire for freedom, our ability to transend our natural state, and our self interest leads to "Man's Problem." Volume 2 focuses on worldviews that have messianic expectations and resolutions of history through corporate indentities. One can understand Niebuhr's perspecive on the eve of WWII's Fascist nations. In summary, this is absolutely one of the best works I have read to help clarify our human nature. His perspective is pragmatic, but is still very focued on core christian doctrines. Buy it, read it, wait a year, read it again, and ponder the depth and breath of his insights!

Book Description
David, unlike any Bible character before him, had the charisma to inspire a great nation. Yet in other ways he was a most ordinary man-often gripped by destructive passion, rocked by personal tragedy, and motivated by political gain. Yet, he is the one character the Bible describes as a "man after God's own heart." In this first volume of the "Great Lives" series Charles Swindoll shows how David proved his love for God many times over in an extraordinary life that left an enduring legacy of faith.

WE ALL HAVE OUR LITTLE SAULS' OR SALIERI'S IN LIFE.......2007-02-23
What I do like about Chuck Swindoll's is that he brings that Old Testament to life for Born Again Christians and makes it relevant to adult lives and problems. This book on David as well as his study guide did give me much food for life when I was having non-legal problems with the government after I had applied for the Federal Civil Service in 1985. I heard on TV that Reagan had to approve in signature even applications for GS-9 position and I was on the list for considerations for such jobs when I was in grad school. I think they just wanted to teach young men like ma a lesson in life the hard way!
David had become a national hero by killing the Philistine Giant Goliath. Then the prophet Samuel had annointed David to be Israel's future king since Saul had committed an act of disobedience against him. Saul became paranoid how David become a military hero where "Saul has slain his thousands; David his ten thousands"! So, Saul in his madness set out to kill David.
What I found so some food for thought was that when David was losing heart about Saul persuing him to kill him and he had to live underground and off the land, that David decided to defect to the pagan Phillistine army-kind of like seeking Political Assylum with the Soviets or the North Koreans! When I was being persecuted on Park Street in North Toledo, I did seek assylum with several foreing nations. But nothing happened. I told myself who is "America's Philistines"-Russia, China, North Korea and Iran. I even sent them all resumes through my shortwave radio hobby. I had a big foreign address book called THE WORLD RADIO TV HANDBOOK! Plenty of people to complain to there!
Other things I liked about David was that he had a thing for the ladies; and I also like pretty girls, but never seem to make it with any of them. David had an entire Harem of seven wives. You cannot find the definition of the word "Harem" in my Bible Dictionary; so sexless and loveless is America's Christianity! He was such an opportunist that he picked up the wife Abagial from a dead enemy Nabal who denied him and his men food when they were on the run from Saul. God stuck Nabal dead with a heart attack for his stinginess. I used to say that my former father in law was liewise a hard man like Nabal-yet God did not strike him dead. And of course David was a Prophet and a Man of God. He wrote about 50 of the Old Testament Psalms, some of which prophesy of Christ;s crucifion on the cross and the coming Millennial Kingdom of God. God had taken David from tending the sheep to becoming Sheperd of Israel! David was a man after God's heart as David did what God had wanted him to do during his reign as King. I found that defining verse in Acts.
I liked the folk guitar in high school and in the Army. I read that David played the small harp, which was a forerunner of the modern folk guitar. Me and David liked music and pretty ladies. I was just thinking the other day that when I die and go to Heaven I will really like to meet this man, as though he was my friend!
Well worth the reading.......2007-01-11
Yet another great book in the series. Well worth the reading and study. I have ordered additional copies to give as gifts.
Great As A Teaching Manual!.......2006-07-27
This is a well written, thought provoking book. I am currently using it as a manual for a Bible study class. It's not one of those "deep theological" biographies, but it speaks to the layman, in a very easy-to-understand style. Recommended for study groups, or anyone, who wants to know more about the "man after God's own heart".
best of the Swindoll series?.......2006-02-24
All the books are good ... this one was great. It hit home for me.
For the most part Swindoll misses the point.......2006-02-19
We used this book for an adult Sunday School class that I taught. I was extremely disappointed by the superficial treatment of the text. I found myself using the Biblical text and other sources. For the most part Dr. Swindoll's book was a distraction rather than a help. For example, 2 Samuel 7 descibes
God's covenant with David that Christ, the True King, would be David's descendant. Swindoll uses this text as to how to react when God says no to our plans. (In this case, it is God's rejection of David as the builder the temple that Solomon eventually built) The covenant IS the point and Dr. Swindoll completely misses it.
If your looking for moralisms that you really already knew this is your book. If you want a serious study of the life of David
you would do well to look elsewhere or try something bold-- a careful reading of the Biblical text.

Edward and Helene. When they met it was more than coincidence. When they fell in love it was more than passion. When they thought they'd lost it all, they should have known they were wrong--they should have known it was Destiny.

Nasty, trashy book.......2006-10-12
Ordinarily, I like a big, romantic saga that spans generations. When they are good, they are very good. Edna Ferber, Belva Plain, James Mitchner, even Fred Mustard Stewart to name a few...I love multilayered characters and family-related story lines that go on for a few years. And I love a good romance.
But I don't love this book. This is just a nasty kind of so-called romantic saga, with a bunch of unrealistic characters you can't care about -- an old, titled French family with loads of money, and everyone's so unhappy with life, boo hoo. Big deal. An American family consisting of a fatherless daughter growing up in the deep South with her British war bride mother. In the hands of an author less concerned with writing about sex, this part could have been very interesting, but in this author's hands -- no. Even for very rich people, (and very poor people) these characters made NO SENSE. On occasion, there are some interesting or descriptive tidbits (I couldn't have kept reading otherwise), but at the point where Helene and Edouard separate (at her instigation) the book just falls apart. Helene takes up with some independent movie makers and acheives fame, and the book just goes off into a la-la land of truly boring weirdness. When Helene and Edouard finally reunite, it's like, so what? Why'd she leave him in the first place, anyway? Oh, and by the way, the fact that Edouard and Helene are really...(well, I've been called out for giving away the plot twist that makes the romance between them pretty gross, so I'm deleting that portion of my review, but believe me, it's a gross plot twist.)
Since sexual encounters take up at least 80% of this book, it's interesting to note that not one character has a normal experience. It's either purple-prose sublime, or it's painful/degenerate.
I was sorry I wasted my time on this trash. Because it really, truly is, a trashy novel.
Couldn't put it down.......2005-07-29
From the first page you are drawn into the story and I couldn't wait to find out how the story would end. It was the first book I have read for a long time where I just couldn't put it down. I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes a good read.
A 2 1/2 STAR REVIEW.......2005-04-18
Supposedly, with DESTINY Sally Beauman became famous for receiving the biggest advance for a first novel yet paid. One has to wonder why. Not that the novel is a goner. Beauman clearly knows how to write. Her prose is as eloquent as her setting and characterization. A lot had been invested in this novel, and kudos for that since the woman definitely has all the makings of a best-selling author. But despite DESTINY's many powerful moments told with warmth and flair (like the outcome of the heroine's childhood friend, for instance), the novel lacks strength. Predictability wins over substance. Beauman's destined to be together characters Hlne and Edouard are a likeable duo, and karma sure does wonders for both of them, yet without much of originality to boost up its sagging plot, Sally Beauman's first major outer since penning a few Harlequins (as Vanessa James) leaves much to be desired.-----Martin Boucher
VERY GOOD INDEED.......2003-08-15
I read this book while in last year and eventhough I'm not a bibliophile--I liked this book. It had an interesting plot and good characterization. I didn't finish it because the ending was kind of whack.
Wonderful, Sweeping Love Story.......2001-08-20
Edouard and Helene are an unforgettable couple.
Edouard de Chavigny comes from a dynastic family of French jewelers. Helene Craig comes from the wrong side of the tracks in rural Alabama. They see each other on the streets of Paris and they have that prescient recognition, "love at first sight"-- and their story begins. Edouard and Helene, seemingly worlds apart, come together with a sense of inevitability.
This book is not a romance, though a love story is one of the novel's central features. The plot takes place in Europe and America with events transpiring from 1959 to 1975. The plot lags when Edouard and Helene are separated and there is a certain "ick" factor to the plot-- which is there for I don't know what reason. But the love story is like no other.
Ms. Beauman is often compared to Sidney Sheldon, with her glittering world of jetsetting characters, rightly so. But Destiny has a better love story than ones you find in Sheldon's novels.
Customer Reviews:
Islam as it realy is........2007-04-17
Well written and well structured this is probably the best introduction to the Muslim religion you can find. Ignore any previous condencending reviews such as "Are Muslims realy like this?" etc.... It realy is beyond me why some think they are qualified to have an opinion so narrow on a religion followed by millions of people as diverse as Chinese, Europeans, Arabs, Africans etc or even on a people. Imagine if someone put up a review making the same comments about Black people or Asian people, they would immediately be condemned as an ignorant bigot but here we are, Islam is in the news, it sells newspapers and we can use it for and against to get the mob and rabble roused.
Concerning the book, it is basically an introduction to the Muslim religion. It covers all aspects of the faith and how it is understood by Muslims, its impact on the world and the impact that the world outside of Islam had upon it.
There are many other books of a similar style such as Roger Du Pasquier's Unveiling Islam and William Chitticks Vision of Islam but this is by far the best. Recomended to Muslim and non Muslim alike.
Read it and see for yourself.
If only..........2005-01-26
Does Islam make men good or do men make Islam good? I love this book. I wish, in my heart, that Islam was truly as described here. But there are as many Islams as there are Muslims.
Mr. Eaton's Islam is one of them. And I wish it were so. His description of Islam radiates beauty, wisdom and power and a genuine and true longing for Truth. It is as poetic as it is spiritually nourishing. As such I can recommend this book to anyone.
My issue, however, is twofold:
1) why do we not see Muslims acting like this? Granted, living in the West we'd probably never see it anyhow as it doesn't make news. However, a good friend of mine is a Muslim and he lives the spirit of the Islam Mr. Eaton presents. Yet ask him to define his stand on whether he is a Sunni, Sufi or Shi'ite you'd probably find he's a bit of all of them and avoids being boxed in.
2) most Americans/Westerners embrace a 'Sufi', i.e. mystical, type of Islam. In other words, they fall outside of the pale of the stricter doctrinal aspects of Islam such as those practiced in Saudi Arabia, Iran and even Egypt. Being Western and free of the cultural impact of being Arab, it provides a freedom of interpretation that would probably be frowned upon by many in the Muslim world. My question is this: is the Islam presented here genuinely Islamic?
This is a great book and a great introduction to Islam. In fact, for an introductory text, it is best to start here and see the best Islam has to offer as the polemical books about Islam are far too common.
Thank you Charles.......2003-09-03
Charles inspired me to pray again, alhamdulAllah.
Excellence in faith and expression.......2003-08-05
I have little to add to the other reviews lauding the brilliance with which this book is written, the excellence of its philosophy, and the sympathetic exegesis of Islam: indeed all of the Abrahamic religions. The one sour review you will read says it all about the excellence of this work.
I am a born-again, Bible believing Christian. It is a pleasure to read such a surrender to the wisdom of God, the Author of history, even if the true nature of Christ isn't, sadly, acknowledged.
I discovered this book entirely by accident, and cannot understand why it is not vastly better known. Do not let this gem of a book escape your careful attention!
MONUMENTAL!!.......2003-06-15
This is a truly majestic book and is, without doubt, one of the most powerful works available on Islam in the English language. Intended primarily for the non-Muslim, or specifically for Westerners with little or no prior knowledge of Islam, I would say that this book is equally accessible and helpful to those who are either practising believers or who have a good working knowledge of the Faith, in the way it goes so far beyond ordinary introductory texts in dealing with and answering the vital questions of human existence. A comprehensive coverage of specifically the Islamic ethos is included, with regards to formation, beliefs, sources, history and crystallization, yet this representation always remains couched in an acute understanding of other major religious forces and (contemporary) intellectual contexts. This work is scholarly and encyclopaedic in content and scope, yet is saved from becoming abstruse or inaccessible by the author's pronounced gift of articulation, where with an almost effortless ease complex issues and matters are expressed in beautiful and poetical style. In fact, certain passages of this book are simply spellbinding, and there is a definite spiritual dimension to the text where the reader can tangibly feel the calm serenity of the author being transmitted through the words. I really cannot recommend this book enough; for those interested in furthering their knowledge of specifically Islam and the Muslim faith it is an excellent place to start or continue your research, for those who have any type of interest in religion in general or who are simply concerned with the deeper questions of life, meaning, purpose and existence then reading this book will prove to be an intriguing experience and for those who are simply looking for an interesting read then I am sure that this book will not disappoint you. Unreservedly, I recommend this book to as many people as possible.

Destiny's Forge.......2007-10-16
I was halfway through this novel before I realized that it was a retelling of Dune set in the Man-Kzin Wars universe. Despite that, it was an excellent read. The story is epic and fits in well with other M-K stories. The Kzin can be one-dimensional in many M-K stories, but here they are more realistically portrayed as a varied civilization with well defined rules.
A new look at Known Space.......2007-10-13
I have been reading Man-Kzin wars novels for years and thought I understood the way things worked. The Kzin were simple, cruel and lost. The Humans were heroes and won. But this changed everything. We get more info on Earth and Kzinhome than in most of the books combined. We also get treated to an eye opening view of the Kzin. The yare a lot more complicated than we think.
Red meat for Known Space/MKW fans.......2007-10-09
Paul Chafe provides red meat for Man-Kzin War fans, and for that matter, fans of Known Space. At 963 pages, this is clearly the longest of the series, but in my view the best. Chafe weaves all previous MKW stories with the Known Space history convincingly, while setting up the coming Man-Kzin peace and the Ringworld series. Chafe establishes himself as the premier writer of the MKW series.
Outstanding!.......2006-10-17
Larry Niven may have invented the Kzin, but Paul Chafe has revealed them. There is more brilliant imagination and invention in this novel than I have seen in almost any other story in the MKW series. The story starts fast, then picks up speed. I usually read novels in fits and starts, often taking weeks to finish them; this one I completed in less than a week, making preferential time for it over other reading and tasks. And I was sorry to see it end.
And Mr. Chafe, among other fine touches, draws in an element from the work of Cordwainer Smith. Bravo, Mr. Chafe! I am envious of your talent.
Highly recommended for any SF reader.
Great story, one BIG (har!) biology flaw.......2006-09-11
Funny how the previous reviewer mentioned Robert Saxtorph - Paul Anderson is my least favorite contributor to MKW series, and I find all of his MKW characters implausible in the context of when the stories take place (although Saxtroph is not the worst).
OTOH, Paul Chafe's characters and setting are superb, and his insights into Kzinti society are excellent. I am giving the book 4 stars because despite Chafe's attempts to justify it (see Prologue), Kzin ecology, and particularly tuskvors, are just plain impossible. No amount of photosynthesis will support herbivores THAT large and in THOSE numbers. In most books that would be a minor oversight, but in "Destiny's Forge" tuskvores are a large (pun intended) plot point, and spoil the book somewhat.
Customer Reviews:
This book made me change from atheism to agnosticism........1999-09-15
To understand Wilder-Smith's ability to produce such a profound spiritual change, it's necessary to understand my personal background. Although I was the grandson of a Protestant pastor, I decided (at the age of 9) that I was an atheist. Reading "Man's origin, man's destiny" helped me to change again from atheism to agnosticism.
In the first part of the book, (entitled "Man's Origin") Wilder-Smith uses powerful scientific arguments to show that the idea of a God makes sense. His use of the law of entropy (the second law of thermodynamics) made the most impression on me, even though I hadn't yet met this law in my educational studies. This was the part of the book that made me shift from atheism to agnosticism.
In the second half of the book (entitled "Man's Destiny"), Wilder-Smith tries to convince the reader that the ideas of Adam and Eve, the Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ and the whole of Christianity makes sense. He failed to make me see this, due to Christianity's many internal contradictions and its failure to correlate with scientifically observable reality. A worthwhile contribution to the debate on Christianity's relevance to the real world.

Seeking for Answers? Start Here!.......2006-05-31
If you've ever questioned the story of creation as given by organized religions and think it just make any sense and lacks logic, then read this book. It tells the true story of creation and ties it in with all the unanswered questions we've ever had, such as where prehistoric man and dinosaurs fit in, who Lilith was, who the sons of God were who married the daughters of men, as depicted in the first part of Genesis, and where all the ancient myths and legends of various creatues such as centaurs, etc., came from. Astonishing, intuitive perspective on human history!.......2000-12-22
I read this book several years ago and was absolutely enthralled by Edgar Cayce's vision of human "evolution." He speaks of the many epochs on earth from when human beings first incarnated on the planet, through the rise and fall of great civilizations and into the future of today's civilization. Cayce takes you on a journey of spiritual evolvement through the ages. Whether you lend credence to his vision or not (I do...) you will find Mr. Cayce's revelations to be simply remarkable. A wonderful book!
